Throughout the 1950s, a group of young British writers were referred to as “angry young men” because, in their novels and plays, they excoriated what they perceived to be the dominant materialistic values of their society following World War Two. They included playwrights John Osborne and Kingsley Amis and novelists John Braine, John Wain, and Alan Silitoe. This film is based on Silitoe’s novel (same title) in which he focuses on Arthur Seaton (brilliantly portrayed by Albert Finney) who endures working in a factory all week so that he can afford to drink and chase women on Saturday evening. He lives (if that’s the word) day-to-day, insisting “All I want is a good time. The rest is propaganda.” Arthur is intelligent enough to know how to indulge his vices but lacks the wisdom to understand that he is drinking and wenching away what few prospects he has to improve his situation. It is unclear (at least to me) whether or not Arthur really wishes to do so. While continuing an affair with Brenda (Rachel Roberts), the bored and restless wife of his foreman/supervisor Jack (Bryan Pringle), Albert also becomes involved with Doreen Gretton (Shirley Ann Field) whose own ambitions seem limited to getting married and starting a family. Revealing to me is the fact that neither Arthur nor Brenda seems especially concerned about, much less rebellious against the limits imposed on them within their class-based industrial society.

Suffocation is one of the recurring themes in James Joyce’s novels and short stories. I was reminded of that recently as I again observed Arthur’s self-indulgent hedonism, indifference to the feelings of others, and callous betrayal of what little he has going for him. Sooner than he realizes, there will be only quiet evenings at home on Saturday. As for his Sundays, perhaps (just perhaps) they will include a moment when he wonders where his youth went as he wearily looks ahead to another dreary week in the local factory. Yes, “the sun also rises….” And then, what will its harsh light reveal?

Saturday Night and Sunday Morning is one of a group of so called ‘kitchen sink dramas’ which dominated British cinema in the early sixties. What these films brought to the screen for the first time were realistic portrails of British and in particular English working class life. This to my mind was the golden age of British film making with pictures like, This Sporting Life, Billy Liar, A Kind of Loving, Alfie, Up the Junction and Kess showing ordinary people struggling to make the best of their lot. This mood was also reflected on British TV with shows like Z Cars, Play for Today and even the early Coronation Street.

The best of this genre is Saturday Night and Sunday Morning. One thing most of these films have in common is that the hero trys to escape the limitation of his working class background. In A Kind of Loving the hero escapes into music and the middle class, In Kes, Billy Kasper escapes his hopeless situation by training and flying his hawk. In this film however Arthur Seaton (Albert Finney) sees no point in getting out. All he wants from life is to earn enough money to spend his weekends drinking and chasing women. Not that Arthur is unintelligent he just sees everything in life, politics, ambition and married life as phoney. Arthur wants to remain free of society’s demand to comform either to marriage or to moving on and ‘bettering himself’

Rachel Roberts and Shirley Ann Fields give great performances as Arthur’s love or rather sex interest and Albert Finney is perfect as the cynical Arthur Seaton. The film ends with Arthur accepting marriage to Doreen (Fields) but telling her not to expect him to confirm all the time ( It will not be the last stone I will throw.)

Saturday Night and Sunday Morning captures a certain time and place and for any American viewers who want to know, is it an accurate a portrail of working class sixties England? I can assure them that it is.

Apart from those films about Britain’s Asian communities, no British film today shows the British working class with making out that all it contains are thieves, druggies and gangsters.

The only exception being Mike Leigh’s work.

Saturday Night and Sunday Morning is a gem. A product of it’s time and a piece of social history on a par with Dickens.

Right from the start of this film, Director Edward Zwick and Cinematographer John Toll, take us on a magnificent journey through some of the most breathtaking vistas, shot mostly on the Stoney Indian Reserve near Calgary.Viewed throughout with James Horner’s score is a beautiful experience right in your own living room.

Three brother’s, their love for each other, their father, and for one woman is the main focus of the story. Tristan is the middle son, his father’s favorite, he is as wild as the Montana country where they live in the early 1900’s. It is he who we follow on a journey of darkness, enlightenment and finally self-discovery.It is an epic story, that follows the lives of the Ludlow family for many years, through WWI,passion, secrets, tragedies, and bonds.

The tale is narrated by Gordon Tootoosis, a Chief of the Cree nation, who was mentor to Tristan and taught him well the ways of becoming one with nature.

Starring in this Cinematic treat are Brad Pitt(Tristan), Aidan Quinn,Henry Thomas, Sir Anthony Hopkins(Col. Ludlow), and as the woman they all love Julia Ormand(Suzanne). All turning in superb performances.

The DVD is as much of a treat as the film itself. The film won an Academy Award for Best Cinematoghraphy in 1994 and it really shows on this edition. Colors are perfect, picture immaculate, and the sound(in 5.1 Dolby Digital)completes the total home theatre package.

It is in widescreen. There’s a ton of special features, including the making of featurette, some great commentary by Zwick and Pitt, and more. The movie can be played in several languages or with subtitles.

If you’ve never seen it,this film has something for everyone, war, romance, western adventure, action, drama It will sweep you off your feet, and you will want to watch it again. If youve already seen it you will not be dissapointed with the transfer to this DVD

Hopkins and Pitt also team up again in:Meet Joe Blacksee my review for film details

Family saga is usually the domain of female audiences but while there is no denying that “Legends of the Fall” is a family saga, it has the power to keep any demographic, over the age of ten, spellbound. Love and jealousy are still the central themes and yet the characters are so large that I doubt many people would not envy them, in some way at least.

The Ludlows are almost mythical Americans. They live a tough but free existence in the North Country. Ruled by Colonel William Ludlow, (Anthony Hopkins), a Father carved from granite, the family’s three sons grow up to be almost as tough. And for a man who spent his last professional years fighting for the rights of the native American’s, a son who has absorbed native culture, along with the best of western values, has to hold a special place in his heart.

Tristan Ludlow, (Brad Pitt), is the focus of our attention from the start. His wild and fearless spirit is guided by One Stab, the colonel’s loyal Indian companion. It is One Stab that narrates Tristan’s story and from him we learn that Tristan’s destiny is entwined with his animal spirit, the Grizzly Bear. As a boy he dares an enormous sleeping grizzly and they take some of each other’s blood. Interpreting his later choices through the moods of the bear is a fascinating idea.

The pace of events pick up the moment the youngest son, Samuel, brings home his bride to be. The beautiful Susannah, (Julia Ormond), manages to steal the hearts of all three brothers and the father as well, although he has the wisdom to act correctly. Samuel arrives with more concern for the growing war in Europe than for his new love. His desire to play his part in the fight is opposed by the Colonel, jaded by the Government’s past immoral acts. But nothing can stop a young man with a cause. Despite his brother’s protection he manages to fulfill his destiny, opening the door to further possibilities for his brothers, with Susannah.

She manages to set the brothers against each other and forces the eldest, Alfred, (Aidan Quinn), on a new path entirely; one that takes him to the U.S. congress, supported by less than honorable men. All of this makes for a heady brew, plenty of drama, powerful performances and broken hearts. For my money, the film wouldn’t have been the same without Isabel Two, played by both Karina Lombard and Sekwan Auger. She waits patiently for her chance with Tristan to come. She and One Stab, form the calm center to the hurricane that is the Ludlow family. And like a hurricane, one you’ve been touched, you’ll never forget “Legends of the Fall”.

Watching this recently, it amazed me how little action there is in this movie, and yet it remains as captivating and enthralling as ever. There are none of the set pieces we have come to expect in modern genre films: no explosions, no gory deaths, one small chase scene. Tension is developed through character development and the wonderful performances of Patricia Neal and Michael Rennie, with some wonderful supporting work from Sam Jaffe and Frances Bavier (Mayberry’s Aunt Bea!)

There are very few special effects: the odd tank disappears in a glow of light, but other than that, this is a film driven by character development. Taut direction by Robert Wise, straightforward writing from Edmund North and impressive cinematography by Leo Tower create an intelligent, literate, adult science fiction film that appeals to all ages.

Special mention must be made of Bernard Herrmann’s haunting score. One of the first film scores to use Leon Theremin’s eerie and eponymous electronic instrument, which unfortunately became a genre cliché, the music adds immeasurably to the tense and unsettling atmosphere.

Modern audiences may find the film’s message heavy handed and obvious, relying on 1950’s atomic paranoia and the absolute power it brought. In fact, Klaatu’s proffered peaceful solution borders on totalianarianism. But these are minor considerations considering this is a simple story stunningly told.

The DVD contains many interesting extras of interest to film buffs and collectors, including a shooting script, extended discussions on the evolution of the film from idea to release, and an odd look at the people fascinated with collecting 1950’s sci-fi film props and paraphernalia.

First and foremost, this is a review for the 1951, black and white, 1.33:1 aspect ratio, 2-disc, special edition DVD and NOT for the remake (Gort! Keanu barada nikto :)

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Day the Earth Stood Still! Click Here

Okay so here’s the lowdown; as I now have both this new edition and the original single, flipper disc, version, and having watched all of the bonus features on the new 2-disc set, I can tell you this: keep the old disc!

Why, because the 73 plus minute, making of, on the original disc is gone, replaced with a new 23 minute fluff piece that only skims the surface of the story, of the making of this film.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Day the Earth Stood Still! Click Here

Gone are the lengthy on camera interviews with the producer, director and female lead, replaced instead with film historian’s inane babble, with the odd snippet of voice recordings of the director and producer, taken from the 73 plus minutes, making of, from the original disc (without the on camera picture).

Also gone, is the very interesting, “Collectors”, segment, tacked onto the end of the original making of, which had several prominent collectors showing off such treasures as the original flying saucer model and Gort statue, used in the actual film, with anecdotes about the film, and where the props they now owned, had ended up after the filming.

As for the extra stuff added to the 2-disc set, nothing is worth the non-inclusion of the original making of from the first disc (most of the new stuff has nothing to do with the film, but instead conveys the political tensions of the world at that time, which, although slightly of interest, is not worth upgrading for).

And on a new extra note for the new 2-disc set, the reading of, Farewell To The Master, is poorly executed, with a static picture with simple playing instructions, present throughout the entire reading (where as they could of has stills from the film playing throughout the reading, while the soundtrack played quietly in the background) and trying to maneuver through the reading is a nightmare, as there are three chapter stops, which are about 10 plus minutes each, with no way of fast searching through the 10 plus minute segments, so if you stop playing the reading at 9 minutes, you can’t start the playback where you left off but instead have to listen to the whole thing from the start of the chapter (I know this because I stopped the playback for a minute, and when I hit the play button on the remote, the film started to play, so I had to go back to the menu and start the reading again, and listen to the stuff I had already heard. I would have preferred that an onscreen text version of the short (45 pages – not so short in my books) story be included instead).

So unless you are a completes, then this 2-disc version isn’t worth the money, and even if you are looking to buy this for the first time, I’d HIGHLY recommend that you pick up the original DVD release, as the picture quality is the same, and you get the far superior 73 plus minute, making of, along with the director’s commentary, picture galleries and original trailer.

This is truly the funniest movie I have ever seen in my life! Robin Williams is hilarious as Daniel Hillard and Mrs. Doubtfire. His saucy performance makes this a classic that many people will watch again and again. Sally Field is also terrific, and the children (Lisa Jakub, Matthew Lawrence, and Mara Wilson) are all fantastic as well. This movie is constantly played over and over at my house.

Mrs. Doubtfire is a comical film following the life of an actor, named Daniel, played by

Robin Williams. The audience enjoys in watching Daniel’s quite amusing attempts at

getting his life back in order after loosing both his job and his marriage in the same day.

Excellently directed, Mrs. Doubtfire is the perfect combination of both humor and

heartache. Dealing with issues of a broken home, the movie allows many Americans to

relate to the lives of the characters.

The viewer watches as a father is torn away from his kids, whom he loves dearly. One can

not help but feel compassion for him as he struggles to find a way back into his children’s

lives. Viewers will feel like they really know Daniel after watching him grow as both a

person and a father.

In desperation, Daniel takes on another identity in effort to spend more time with his

beloved children. One’s stomach will split with laughter watching him jump from one

identity to the other in attempt to remain unidentified. The humor involved is clean, yet

hilarious. Something both kids and their parents can enjoy together.

Mrs. Doubtfire will grip one’s heart and hold on tight, until the very end when tears of joy

will slowly well up in every eye. A perfect film for the whole family, Mrs. Doubtfire is

definitely worth one’s time.

Parn is a young warrior living in a small village whose father was a holy knight, who was eventually forced to leave in disgrace. Parn is determined to salvage his family’s name. Then one day Parn saves a young woman who is attacked by a gang of goblins in the woods. That goblins should be out in broad daylight is very strange, since they normally only come out at night. Later the other villagers berate him for killing a goblin, since they’re certain more will come and retaliate by attacking the village. This does happen, and it’s up to Parn and his old friend Etoh, a cleric, (a priest who specializes in healing spells,) as well as two other warriors, Ghim, a dwarf warrior who has embarked on a quest to find and bring back home Karla, a young priestess, and his sorceror friend Slayn, to defend the village. After the battle with the goblins is over, the mayor sends Parn and Etoh out to find out the cause of the goblins strange behavior, like going out in daylight. Ghim and Slayn go with them. Soon the four are joined by Deedlit, a high elf maiden. It isn’t long before they are captured by guards of the kingdom of Mice (yes, that’s what it’s called,) who suspect them of being enemy spies, and taken prisoner. While in prison they meet Woodchuck, a thief. They learn of the evil kingdom of Marmo, which is going out on a journey of conquest. Soon the captain of the guards meets them and realizes what a mistake has been made, and he orders the five released. Parn wants to join the guard ranks, but then Marmo attacks. The heros are unable to stop the oncoming army, and barely make it out with Woodchuck in tow. Now they must embark on a quest to save Loduss from evil.

Just about everything is great about this show, including the voice acting in both lanuges, but there’s one serious problem in the continueity that might have some people confused. Episode 1 actually takes place AFTER episodes 2-5. Why they did this, I have no idea. Anyway, if you want the watch the episodes in their proper order, watch them like this:

#2:Blazing Departure

Buy,Download, Or Stream Record of Lodoss War – The Complete Series! Click Here

#3:The Black Knight

#4:The Grey Witch

#5:The Desert King

#1:Prologue To The Legend

After this, go to episode 6,”The Sword Of The Dark Emperor:, and watch the rest of the series in order.

Alrighty, what can I say that hasn’t really been said? I disagree with some of the reviews. I’ve seen both sets, and this one by far is better. I don’t understand where one reviewer got the “Grainy” viewing on DVD, mine doesn’t have that. Yes, the English dubs aren’t as good as the origional voices, but that’s a given in almost any anime.

The first episode is a catcher episode, but takes place later in the plot. Aside from that, I found nothing confusing about it, even when the people split up and it skipped back and forth. The only annoying thing about it is the little commercial break thingy in the middle of the episode. If you sit down and watch all 13 in a row, you’ll know what I mean.

I enjoyed this anime more than the others of it’s type because it has character. You see progress with each character, as they become more proficient in their abilities. Another plus is that even though Good triumphs over evil, good isn’t the unstoppable force that only takes a few scratches. Some major setbacks occur, and I almost had to watch a couple scenes twice to make sure that really happened, my mind woulnd’t believe it. The storyline also includes several plot twists, that will make you actually reconsider who is good and who is bad.

The full VHS cost me almost twice the DVD cost. When I saw it for DVD for only 50 bucks, I ran out and bought it. This is most definately worth every penny I’ve spent, and I’ve seen the entire series 3 times and am still not tired of it. I highly recommend this not just for any anime fan, but for any fantasy fan as well.

It is incomprehensible to me why this movie has not yet made it to DVD. I think it is easily Visconti’s greatest work, and one of the masterpieces of Italian film from a great era in general; and it is also a flawless adaptation of one of the finest Italian novels of the twentieth century. The film is a close study of a noble Sicilian family, and especially of its Prince (played by Burt Lancaster in what I think is also his best role), as they interact with the new middle-class parvenus of revolutionary Italy. The cinematic values of the film itself are stunning, from the vast panoramas of the desolate Sicilian countryside, to the stifling intimacy of the final ball (which lasts nearly an hour on film without once being boring). What is most amazing is the depth of the film. Even small gestures are carefully observed and capture the nuances of an aristocracy in decline. I loved “Death in Venice” as well, but this film should justly be considered Visconti’s most tightly controlled and haunting.

criterion gives a real royal treatment to this movie and it is higly earned by it…in some reviews people say that the movie is cut and italian version is better blah blah…what they dont know is this 3 disc set has all two of them…check that out yourself:

I tell you what…get this if you’re a fan of the Hulk alone. That in itself is reason enough to see this movie. I have forever loved all that the Hulk represents and how he rolls. But he about lost his mind in this movie! I loved it!!! Beyond that, good plot, beautiful fantasy cartoon babes abound, and as a Marine, I appreciated how Captain America and the military were portrayed as they went into battle against Nazis and space aliens in WWII. C,mon…space aliens, dream babes, Nazis, and the Hulk…what’re you waiting for? Relax the literary critic inside you and have some fun. Go. Rent.

Most agree that the story was bad for this animated release. I personally think part 1 was bearable, but 2 was close to unwatchable. What I DO however like about this release, is the quality Bluray brings. Those who tell you animation wont be enhanced by hi def? Show them this. Crisp lines, and solid colors all around. Very impressive to watch visually. And the sound was incredible. I only use the two speakers on my TV, but the sound that came out of this release was still pretty amazing, leaps and bounds over my regular DVDs.

If you or your friends have active children, they will love the way this series teaches. My friends children are mimicking and repeating the songs and dances and the letters perfectly and with understanding of the visual meanings, as well as some of the words. Very well produced product.

I purchased one of these at a store for our daughter, just to see what it was. She enjoyed watching it. The great thing about it was that it came with a paper fold out map, which went along with the DVD, so in that way, it was interactive, she could follow what the dog (and other) animals were doing, and what letter they were searching for. This set does not contain the maps, but at this low price for all of them, they will still teach your kids / toddlers some great lessons.

Rating for this movie — 5 Stars.

Rating for the 2004 DVD version of the film — 1 Star.

“Pillow Talk” stars Doris Day, Rock Hudson, Tony Randall, and Thelma Ritter. It remains today what it was when released in October of 1959, and that is — a highly-entertaining and well-acted romantic comedy.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Pillow Talk! Click Here

The film was re-released on DVD-Video by Universal Studios on April 6th, 2004. This newer version has been enhanced for 16×9 widescreen TVs, and the anamorphic enhancement has helped in many places. However, the picture quality here does seem to be a bit of a “hit and miss” proposition. Several portions of the movie still look rather crummy (artifact-wise), exhibiting obvious dirt speckles and “noise”. The opening titles sequence is peppered with dirt and artifacts galore, as are a few other parts of the film, particularly ALL of the “split screen” scenes. For some reason, it seems that these “split screen” shots could not be cleaned-up nearly as much as the other portions of the movie.

But by far the biggest atrocity is the fact that this 2004 DVD print has been mis-framed! In some places pretty badly, too. Head room is way too tight here, with the tops of many character’s heads being cut off. This was NOT the case with the previous 1999 DVD print of this movie.

When you compare the ‘99 print with this 2004 one, the mis-framing is obvious in many places. It appears that this new print has been “zoomed in” quite a bit, creating the tight head room. Some of the most blatant examples of this “zooming in” occur in Chapter 10, where the piano player’s head is severely cropped. Whereas, on the ‘99 DVD, her entire head is visible in the frame. Plus, a few seconds later in that “Roly Poly” scene, we see a shot of several people singing along to the music and clapping their hands. In this shot, TWO ENTIRE PEOPLE (one on the left and one on the right side of the frame) are totally cut out of the shot! Plus, part of another man is cut out of the frame on the left! These “missing” people are all visible on the 1999 disc.

And check out Chapter 14! This scene is simply horrifying from a framing standpoint! Literally half of Rock Hudson’s head is missing here! When we KNOW it should be in the frame (based on the 1999 disc, which is perfectly framed for the 2.35:1 aspect ratio of the movie). Yikes!

This is ridiculous carelessness on the part of Universal’s quality control department! Many scenes are totally botched with this zoomed-in mis-framing of the print!

Looks like yet another case of a Universal product being mishandled in the DVD transfer department. A pity! For “Pillow Talk” is one of the best romantic comedies you’re likely to see this year, or any other year. And it deserves better treatment than this. It’s just plain stupid to let an obviously-botched DVD video transfer like this one get into any consumer’s hands! Doesn’t ANYONE check these framing issues before finalizing the product? Mind-boggling indeed!

This newer DVD version of the film contains the exact same Menu design and Special Features as the previous non-anamorphic variant (minus a text info page about Universal “Web Links”). The bonus features aren’t very plentiful, being limited to the original theatrical trailer and some very extensive and informative text notes on the film and its cast members. (FYI — These text-based items are verbatim to the older “Pillow Talk” DVD release; but definitely worth a read. Until reading these Production Notes, I never knew a sequel to the film was being planned in 1980. But, unfortunately, the project never got beyond the initial planning stages, and the film was never made. Too bad. I’d have liked to have seen that sequel.)

I’m severely disappointed with this DVD. I looked forward very much to having this film in an enhanced anamorphic state. But in this butchered, mis-framed version, it’s nearly impossible to fully enjoy the film. Because the FULL film is not here!

If you’ve already got the older non-anamorphic DVD of “Pillow Talk”, you’d be better advised to just hang onto it, and skip this version entirely. Upon looking over both versions side-by-side, the older one really isn’t very much worse (fuzziness-wise) than this new one. And when factoring in the mis-framing problem of the new one, the old DVD displays the WHOLE picture; while this new one definitely does not.*

* EDIT/FOOTNOTE (OCTOBER 2005) — Universal has supposedly fixed the mis-framing problem with this 2004 DVD release — although I’ve ordered multiple copies of the “new” disc (from different e-tailers) and still haven’t seen a properly-framed copy. I’ve had to return each one thus far (and they were ordered more than a year apart). Very discouraging. So, you’re taking your chances when you order this ‘04 version of the film.

Doris Day and Rock Hudson are perhaps the best duo in movie history. Pillow Talk is one of the most clever comedies ever made. This film is about a painful reality in the 50’s- party lines. When Jan Morrow wants to use her phone, she must first listen to her other “party” Brad Allen romance the women. She finally works out a deal with him to each have a thirty minute slot where they can make calls, but selfish Brad doesn’t adhere to the rules at all! Brad accidentally meets the other end of his party line at a restaurant, and makes a quick decision to become someone else. He ultimately romances Jan, while she has no idea that he is her arch enemy. For it’s time, Pillow Talk was one of the more risque films, but yet one of the funniest and most romantic ever made.

On that note, I have to say I was so disappointed with this DVD. There are no extras to speak of other than the trailer and some production notes. As successful as the stars of this movie were, you think Universal could have put a little more punch into this DVD. The quality of the DVD is also quite poor. There was no digital remastering, only a direct copy from vhs to dvd. If you are a person who only has dvd’s, I would still get this because this is such a classic, you have to have it around. If you still have your vhs machine, get it on vhs, it’s cheaper and not any less quality than the dvd.
