This is Rhino’s second DVD collection of four episodes of “Mystery Science Theater 3000,” and it’s excellent. It has three great episodes from various seasons, and a fourth disc of hilarious short subjects. And it comes in a nifty package with moving parts!

In case you’re new to the world of “Mystery Science Theater 3000″ (MST3K for short, that’s what us fans — “Misties” — call it), this is the famous TV show where a silhouette of a man and two robots in theater seats provide running commentary for some of the worst movies ever made. The ninety-minute episodes are scattered with sketches and songs and amount to some of the smartest, most pop-culture savvy, side-splitting comedy ever made.

This DVD contains three episodes, plus a compilation of short subjects from different episodes. The episodes cover a wide spectrum: two are from early in season three, when Joel Hodgson was the host and the show was just kicking into high gear. The third is from late in the sixth season, when the show had developed a much more slick and sarcastic approach with host Mike Nelson. People new to the show will get a good chance to compare the styles of the show. Personally, I love both, but they are quite different. The Shorts are brief films that the host would sometimes make fun of before the movie. Originally, they watched episodes of old movie serials, but when those quickly became tiresome, they turned to educational, commercial, and industrial filmstrips (you know, those annoying things you had to watch at school assemblies in sixth grade?). They contain some of the funniest riffing in the series, and are favorites of the fans.

Here’s what’s on this collection:

ANGEL’S REVENGE. Episode #622. A 1978 film originally titled “Angel’s Brigade,” this is an hysterically awful rip-off of the TV show “Charlie’s Angels,” only it’s worse, if you can imagine that! A group of attractive and not-so-attractive women decide to wage war on L.A.’s drug dealers by dressing in white jump suits. The female leads (including Playboy Playmate Susan Lynn Kiger) are horrendous actresses, but what’s really embarrassing is the presence of well-known guest stars slumming at the pits of their careers: Jack Palance, Jim Backus, Pat Butrum, Alan Hale, and in a depressing performance, Peter Lawford. Poor Peter appears to have been drunk for the entire filming. Mike and the `Bots have an absolute field day making fun of the relentless 70s style (”Entertaining was a lot easier in the 70s!”) and the poor, unfortunate guest stars (”Do you think Peter knows where he is?”). This is one of my favorite Mike Nelson episodes, and it’s the best disc in this package.

CAVE DWELLERS. Episode #301. This film was originally released in 1984 as “Ator the Invincible” and then as “Blade Master” on video. It’s a sequel to “Ator the Fighting Eagle,” and is one of many cheap-o copycats of “Conan the Barbarian.” This stinker stars Miles O’Keefe as beefy warrior Ator, who also knows lots of sciencey stuff (like how to manufacture a hang-glider in two minutes with just sticks). Ator travels to the Ends of the Earth to stop some John Saxon-like villain from obtaining some vague object with a funny name that might do something really bad. Or whatever — the film is just fantasy of the worst kind. It’s so cheap there are no special effects, and the only monster is an immobile velour snake. This is first episode of season three, and this is really when the show entered its golden phase. Joel and the `Bots have some good times here, especially at the outlandish finale, and there’s a hilarious parody of the movie’s opening credits. A good episode, and the start of great things.

POD PEOPLE. Episode #303. The poor dubbing in this film automatically marks it as foreign, but since it’s obviously trying to pass itself off American, it’s tricky to figure out where it was really shot. Mystery over: this is a 1983 Spanish film called “Los Nuevos Extraterrestres,” released in America as “The Unearthling.” It’s an awful attempt to copy “E.T.” and combine it with a horror film. Aliens that resemble miniature two-legged versions of Snuffleupuggus from “Sesame Street” invade the mountains. A high-pitched little kid befriend one of the aliens, Trumpy, while the rest start killing people for no reason. There’s an awful pop band on a trip (their performance in a recording studio is one of the highlights of the episode), some poachers, and a dysfunctional family up in a cabin. None of it fits together, but Joel and `Bots create some classic running gags. It’s the perfect kind of film for the MST3K treatment. You’ll love their re-creation of the incomprehensible “song” performed by the band in the move. (”It stinks!”)

SHORTS, VOL. 1. These come from many seasons, and all are great. Tom Servo does a joking intro for each one. “The Home Economics Story” (from episode #317) is a 1950s film for high school girls that encourages them to study home economics in college, implying that they aren’t destined for anything other than being housewives. “Junior Rodeo Daredevils” (from episode #407) tells how a group of kids in a tiny town set up their own rodeo, and then broke all their limbs and snapped their spinal chords — all in good fun! “Body Care & Grooming” (from episode #510) informs college students how to spend all their time grooming their hair and skin, because people will only like them if they’re pretty! “Cheating” (from episode #515) tells the tragic story of Johnny, who cheated and rose to power, and then fell into the pits of despair not unlike a Kafka novel. “A Date with Your Family” (from episode #602) is the best of the bunch: a nightmare about the perfect 50s family having a perfectly repressed 50s dinner. The riffing here is as sharp and satiric as anything ever done on the show. “Why Study Industrial Arts” (from episode #609) is the reverse of “The Home Economics Story,” encouraging young men to risk sawing off their limbs in shop class. And finally, “The Chicken of Tomorrow” (from episode #702) explains breeding techniques to create meatier chickens. It’s very depressing.

(In a bit of a mistake, two of the shorts are already available on other DVDs: episode #609, “The Skydivers” is on the first Rhino DVD collection, and Episode #515, “The Wild World of Batwoman,” is available as a single DVD, so you might have already seen two of these shorts.)

This is another awesome collection from Rhino. There’s more laughs here than you’ll find in a year’s worth of Hollywood comedies. A must for MST3K fans and newcomers alike!

This four-disc set of MST3k episodes lacks a few of the extras available on the previous release, but that in no way makes this a lesser product. While I did miss having the trailers and the uncut versions of the film available on the disc, this is still a worthwhile product, combining three great episodes and one short-film collection. I love watching MST3k on these DVDs, as I can watch and rewatch, and catch gags and references on the second viewing that I missed the first time around.

Here are some quick comments on each of the discs:

ANGELS REVENGE: From the moment the disco music powers out of your speakers on the opening DVD menu, you should know exactly what to expect. This is the story of a cheap Charlie’s Angels rip-off that increases the number of angels, but decreases the number of coherent plot points. Yeah, ponder that for a moment. Anyway, this is a delightfully awful movie with a surprisingly high number of celebrity cameos, including Jack Palance (as a drug kingpin’s right-hand man), Alan “The Skipper” Hale (as a disco singer’s vaguely sleazy manager), and Jim “The Millionaire” Backus (as the head of a right-wing militia). One wonders what hideous bet was lost on the set of Gillian’s Island that forced two of its stars to appear. One wonders what on Earth the 70’s did to Jack Palance to make him decide to star in this. A multi-ethnic plethora of busty babes rounds out the cast. Despite the title of the film, none of the Angels get anywhere near top billing. A middle-aged, male Hollywood executive’s idea of what a feminist movie would look like.

CAVE DWELLERS: This is the sequel to some other lousy film, and the lengthy flashback to that picture in the beginning of this turkey makes it out to be just as painful and bizarre. The back cover of the DVD Boxed Set doesn’t even bother giving a plot summary, because there really isn’t one – just some muscled guy wandering through a forest for an hour and a half. This is a film that would be a really, really painful experience without those soothing fellows down in the corner of the screen.

POD PEOPLE: This ranks as one of my favorite MST3k episodes. A movie that’s unbelievable goofy combined with the hecklers at their wittiest. The host segments to this one are a riot, and all directly mock the main feature. I laughed, I cried, I rewound and laughed and cried some more. I really think this is one of the sharpest commentaries that the MST3k gang recorded, so this is something not to be missed.

SHORTS, Vol. 1: The short instructional films that the Satellite of Live crew occasionally tackled often resulted in some of their funniest material. These short features are hilarious enough in their own right, but when they get the MST3k treatment, they’re even more painfully funny. Tom Servo hosts: The Home Economics Story, Junior Rodeo Daredevils, Body Care & Grooming, Cheating, A Date With Your Family, Why Study Industrial Arts? and The Chicken of Tomorrow. Rest assured that they are indeed as frightening as their names would have you believe.

The small print on the back of the Boxed Set informs us that “the production elements required to include the films in their original format were not available”. A pity, since a lot of MST3k films make for hilarity even without the commentary. But still, this shouldn’t come as a major disappointment, since it’s Mike/Joel and the ‘bots rather than the dubious, cheesy films that make these Boxed Sets must-buys, although I must admit to a very sick desire to see the uncut version of POD PEOPLE.

“Tru Calling” was a television show that ran for 1 season on Fox before being abruptly canceled prior to the airing of the first six completed episodes of what was shaping up to be a phenomenal second season. Well, at least it fared better than Firefly. Sorry, it still hurts. The show starred girl-of-my-dreams Eliza Dushku (of Buffy/Angel fame) as a morgue attendant, Tru Davies, who gains a unique supernatural power. The dead bodies she attends occasionally ask her for help and she finds herself instantly transported back to the moment she awoke that morning and charged with saving the life of the corpse she just encountered. It’s a simple set-up for what proves to be a formulaic but very entertaining show that deserved much better than it got.

Honestly, Eliza Dushku herself is reason enough to go out and buy this. The girl is just a joy to watch onscreen. She has girl-next-door likability, great acting talent, plenty of attitude, and a damn sexy voice. Also: quite pretty, yes? But the writing for “Tru Calling” is also top-notch and manages to keep things interesting at all times in spite of the episodic nature of the stories. You’ll be surprised at how inventive and compelling some of the stories are. One finds Tru reliving the same day four separate times as every night after saving the life, another corpse turns up as a result and sends her back to the start. Others have her juggling her duty with finagling her ne’er-do-well of a brother out of whatever idiotic situation he’s gotten himself into or attempting to save people close to her. Yet another has her charged with saving two lives on the same day, a monumental task considering the amount of investigation, resourcefulness, and work it takes to save the life of one person you don’t know anything about aside from cause of death. The supporting cast is also outstanding including Tru’s boss (a The Lord of the Rings nerd), and her exceptionally dysfunctional family. Just how dysfunctional? I couldn’t possibly tell you without massive spoilers.

The real story for the show begins when Tru finds out that she has an opposite. Jason Priestly takes the show by storm as Jack, a man whose day rewinds every time our heroine’s does and is charged with making sure those on a collision course with death stay that way. Tru is then forced to examine her place in the world and wonder if she is, as Jack says, doing more harm than good by disrupting the natural order of things. The come the bombshells. The last part of Season 1 gathers massive momentum that carries over into Season 2 and you curse Fox’s stupidity for killing yet another great show at it’s creative peak when the last episode is done and you’re left pondering what could have been.

“Tru Calling” was an outstanding series for fans of supernatural television and I’m still ticked off that it’s gone. Instead we got endless “reality” shows -each more inane and derivative than the last-, more and more formulaic crime and medical dramas (House, M.D. rocks, though), and fluff like “Medium” and “Ghost Whisperer” (no links for you!). And when we do get real deal supernatural television it’s on-the-bubble shows like Reaper that are great and so you fear every week of hearing about their cancellation. This is no kind of life for a fan to live, man! Speak up about your favorite shows when those rumors start swirling. One email to the network can be a drop in an ocean of support that saves the shows you love. Check “Tru Calling” out if the notion of a macabre, heroic version of Groundhog Day starring Miss Dushku appeals to you in any way.

4 1/2 stars rounded up for old times sake.

I can’t wait for “Dollhouse”! Look out for it.

I never seen this show while it ran for a little over a season, but I caught a glimpse of a re-run and fell in love with it. I ordered the complete series on DVD here off of Amazon. I started watching the series, and could not get enough of it. The characters all blended well, and I have NO idea why this show was canceled. It should have ran for many more years. Eliza Dushku as Tru did an amazing heart felt job in every episode. I don’t think a better actress could be found for this part. Jason Priestley as Jack was simply amazing. I found myself agreeing with the character “Jack” in his outlook on what he did to preserve the laws of fate.

Shawn Reaves as Harrison, the half bad boy good guy of the show made for an entertaining watch. Shawn Reaves as Davis was outstanding in his performance, I always thought he had a “thing” for Tru, and I can’t blame him. I enjoyed the whole premise of this show. All in all a great show, and worth watching.

This is a very great movie. This two ladies proved that they can act by doing complete different charaters than they ususaly do. un like the Jonas brothers that cant do anything but the “rockstar” roll. If you buy this movie you will have a great time

If You saw the previous episode the first half of the dvd deals with Jane a computer hacker who’s hired by the Italian mob to make advanced money plates to make counterfeit U.S. money but goes past the dead line. Now the mobs after her and Jane’s only protection are the hire guns of Revys and Sister Eda. The other half has Rock going back to Japan with Balalaika to act as her interpreter to the Japanese Yakuza which she seems to want to try and make an alliance with. This series as always is fantastic both with the action and drama not for younger kids but if you like the hard-core animes like samurai champloo you’ll definitely like this. The one scene I liked the best is when Rock is talking to Revy while their in Japan at one of the festivals and Rock explains how it seems so tranquil there and how it seems he can’t go back to what he was before. I felt it showed how Rock seemed to cast away his innocence and naivety of the world around him but also seemed to somewhat regret that a little as well. Revy in this episode also shows her growing feelings for Rock and tries to help him out with understanding his feelings about whats going on as well. For me I just have to get the last dvd of this great show and my collection is complete so I say to anyone who’s looking for a excellent series get this one for your home you won’t be disappointed…

Lawrence of Arabia is available for streaming or downloading.

Apart from the slightly soft, washed-out picture quality during the opening credits of the movie, the DVD edition of LAWRENCE OF ARABIA is superb. The movie itself is spread onto 2 discs, with the disc break occurs just before Intermission. The Overture, Intermission, and the exit music are all played to a black screen, as per director David Lean’s original wish. The picture quality looks as fresh and clean as, quite frankly, any film made in the 90s. In the dramatic shot where Lawrence appears on the far horizon after he rescued his Arab companion, the higher picture resolution of DVD makes it possible for us to notice his tiny figure whereas on VHS tapes or laserdisc it is so small it is almost impossible to see. Anyone who is serious about watching this film should get this DVD instead of any other version in order to appreciate the opulent cinematography and majestic atmosphere of this epic.

The disc has over 100 minutes of old and new documentaries and news footage about the making of the film, plus two well-designed DVD-ROM features (for Windows PC only): a interactive map showing the various journeys undertaken by the real T.E. Lawrence, and a “split-screen” feature that simultaneously plays the movie and shows you text of behind-of-scene information of the particular chapter of the movie that is playing. Since the DVD lacks a second audio commentary, being able to watch the film while reading facts about it is not a bad substitute.

The included “booklet” is a reproduction of the 1961 program given to theater goers, we are told. A nice touch: the disc case resembles Lawrence’s diary in the movie.

It is unsurprising to me that some people find Lawrence of Arabia boring. If you have the attention span of a hummingbird, this is not a film you will enjoy. It has no car chases, no bikini-clad supermodels, and nary a kung-fu move to be seen. Instead, all it offers is tortured respect for everything it touches. Lawrence of Arabia is a film that elevated the art of cinematic storytelling to new heights, and it shows. It is the journey, not the destination, that the viewer should focus on. In order to enjoy this film, you must make a commitment to watch it. Get comfortable, have something to drink on hand (you’ll know why about halfway through), turn off the phone, and put the remote under a pillow. I’ve seen a lot of films, and some I’ve liked to varying degrees, and others I’ve simply been satisfied that Hollywood didn’t butcher the underlying work or premise too badly in pursuit of the lowest common denominator. Lawrence of Arabia is different. It is one of those truly rare films that makes you feel grateful for having seen it, for the efforts of all those involved to craft, create, and perserve over the years just so you might have the chance to see it. It is such a fine film that its merits are obvious, and negative statements about it tend to simply reflect back on the critic.

Why? Many reasons. The actors are likewise gifted with rare talent, and superbly cast. The settings and scenes are invariably breathtaking. The plot is engrossing and entertaining without ever becoming heavy-handed. Film students will while away hours discussing everything from the Christ imagery to the undercurrents of homoeroticism, but they do that with every film. I suggest you simply kick back and enjoy an excellent, time-honored epic about a stranger in a strange land. It is a harrowing, draining journey, but one you will not regret.

Ranme is kid animation well liked by teenage and Adult. It can be silly, funny;but it’s warm, caring and romanic. Many people would give this Japanese TV series a “R”rating because of the nudity,in the japanese culture this is anormal show being watch by kids all over japan. PG-13 is the correct rating for this show. You will enjoy it.

As long as you don’t expect plot and great story you will find yourself enjoying the Ranma 1/2 series. I find myself watching them when I just want to relax and smile. It is an easy series to sit down and watch an episode or two.

Movie Title: The Towering Inferno
Average customer review:

The Towering Inferno is available for streaming or downloading.

I remember when I first saw the 1974 disaster epic “The Towering Inferno” as a child. The movie was playing exclusively at one of those old-fashioned, huge theaters, complete with balcony and curtains which drew open as the film began. The screen was gigantic. There was not an empty seat in the house. Moviegoers applauded as the opening chords of John Williams’ tremendous score began thundering from the speakers during the opening credit sequence. And fans continued to applaud, most notably when Steven McQueen finally arrives on the scene, fire marshall red car skidding to a halt, helmet in hand. This film, one of the greatest blockbusters in cinema history, was a true event for 1970s audiences.

It has always been easy to dismiss this film, just as most critics dismiss many of the popular disaster films of this era (”Airport,” “Earthquake,” “The Poseidon Adventure”). When watching “The Towering Inferno” today (this film must be seen in the letterbox format, if only to truly appreciate the fantastic special effects), I feel a sad twinge of nostalgia. Steve McQueen’s presence alone is worth the price of admission, and this role would turn out to be one of his last in a major film. He steals just about every scene he’s in, simply because of his extraordinary screen presence. A few wrinkles crease his weathered face, he’s kind of chubby, but even with middle age slowly approaching, McQueen’s spark is undeniable. “The Towering Inerno” is a great example as to why McQueen was one of our greatest movie stars.

Sure, the enormous cast sleepwalks through most of this film in “I’m-just-collecting-a-paycheck” fashion, but has Paul Newman and Faye Dunaway ever been as attractive as they were in this flick? The Maureen McGovern song “We May Never Love Like This Again” (which won an Academy Award) is pure 70s schmaltz, the disco fashions relatively amusing (gotta love Richard Chamberlain’s suit) and you even have Fred Astaire doing a bit of soft shoe with Jennifer Jones. I’m not going to mention O.J. Simpson’s role, simply because he’s way too easy of a target these days.

Through it all, “The Towering Inferno” does have an important message, eventually becoming a tribute to the heroism of our nation’s firefighters. That’s good. I also love one of Newman’s final lines in the film, in which he says they should just leave the tower as is – “I think they should just leave it, kind of a monument to all the bull[stuff] in the world.” It’s also interesting to see two legends such as McQueen and Newman working together on screen. In fact, I can’t really recall a single film in history in which two acting legends the status of McQueen/Newman starred in the same film together such as this. In today’s Hollywood, they really don’t make movie stars like this anymore. And they really don’t make films like this anymore.

Going to the movie theater used to be an event. Huge screens, larger-than-life movie stars, movies playing at the same theater for months at a time. “The Towering Inferno” reminds me of that era, before cable TV, before video rental stores, before multiplex movie theaters. It’s corny, it’s funny, and it’s special effects-driven. But it’s a glamorous film, as old-fashioned as “Grand Hotel,” and a testament to a bygone era in Hollywood.

Irwin Allen decided to follow up his “The Poseidon Adventure” success with the 1974 suspense-thriller “The Towering Inferno,” a movie which also garnered an impressive 10 Oscar nominations and is released as a 2-disc DVD special edition this week.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Towering Inferno! Click Here

Whereas in “The Poseidon Adventure” the leads had to travel up, the only way is down for Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, William Holden, Fred Astaire, Richard Chamberlain, Robert Wagner and Faye Dunaway. Attending the opening night gala the guests are trapped on the 129th floor of the world’s tallest building which becomes an inferno thanks to the shoddy wiring system installed by chief builder James Duncan (Holden) and his electrician son Roger Simmons (Chamberlain).

Newman plays Doug Roberts, the proud architect behind the Glass Tower, a skyscraper, which dominates the San Francisco skyline at a height of 138-story’s. Returning from a long vacation Roberts immediately recognizes that something is wrong and he is proven correct when a circuit breaker burns out and ignites garbage on a lower floor.

While the script can be a tad melodramatic at times, the effort put into this movie is obvious. Nominated for Best Picture and winning for best cinematography, best special effects and best song, the movie was a smash hit and still holds up well today in this age of blockbuster special effects extravaganza’s.

As with “The Poseidon Adventure” the previous DVD release was sorely lacking in special features and has been replaced with three hours of extras. Joining the nine all-new featurettes which includes a retrospective, a look at the special effects and the art design is the AMC Backstory on the making of the movie, 32 deleted or extended scenes and an audio commentary by film historian F.X. Feeney.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Towering Inferno! Click Here

Feeney’s commentary is fascinating and comprehensive, covering all aspects of the production from the writing and dialogue all the way through to the sets and the sense of anticipation director John Guillerman builds up from the start. Feeney tells us that this movie was a milestone for Hollywood in that it was the first time two studios had co-produced a feature. Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox owned two separate books, “The Tower” by Richard Martin Stern and “The Glass Inferno” by Thomas N. Scortia and Frank M. Robinson, and both planned to make two competing movies on the same subject.

It was Allen who stepped in and proposed the historic deal and the two studios agreed, splitting first the cost and then the profit equally.

Though not for the full length of the feature special effects director Mike Venzina and stunt coordinator Branko Racki both individually comment on individual scenes. Verzina discusses eight scenes and Racki talks about nine separate scenes. Their observations are largely technical in nature and center on their selective specialties.

The longest of the documentaries is once again the AMC Backstory which runs 22:08. It is in this featurette that we learn that the model used for shots of the tower was itself seven stories high, that William Holden became aggravated with Faye Dunaway’s tardy-ness to the set and that despite the media attempting to portray conflict between the two stars Steve McQueen and Paul Newman, the two actually got along well together with a mutual respect and friendly competition (as evidenced by a funny blooper).

The other featurettes range from 4:28 in length (on the directing of the movie) to 9:15 on the writer Stirling Silliphant. But they cover a wide range of topics from a retrospective by the cast and crew “Inside the Tower: We Remember” (8:16) in which Richard Chamberlain likens the set to being at a really glamorous Hollywood party day after day with the standard six star dressing rooms being increased to 15 to the architecture of the tower in “Still the World’s Tallest Tower” (8:28) which compares The Glass Tower to other real-life skyscrapers and the impact these high-rise buildings have on the surrounding communities.

Other topics touched on include the safety aspects employed on the production in “Putting out fire” (4:58) in which Allen comments “You’d better have all the camera’s rolling because fire waits for no man,” and also reveals that firemen were on the set each day to “Running on fire” (5:52) which discusses the work of the stuntmen and includes the facts McQueen did not like anyone else doing his stunts and even Newman and Chamberlain did a number of their own stunts.

Also on this special collector’s edition are 32 deleted or extended scenes that range from the 40-second “Still Waiting for the Elevator” which featuresshots of crowds of people pushing and shoving each other at the elevator and Holden’s character assessing the situation on the telephone to the 2:55 clip “Four Alarm Fire” which covers the spreading of the fire through the building, the call from security requesting a four-alarm fire and shots of fire engines screaming through the streets of San Francisco.

All of the deleted or extended scenes were originally part of a longer television broadcast. Unfortunately their condition has deteriorated and they were deemed of too poor quality for Fox to include them through the popular DVD technique of seamless branching alongside the theatrical cut on the first disc.

Rounding out the special features on this release are three 1975 articles from “American Cinematographer” which run for a combined 83 pages and which, like those on “The Poseidon Adventure” DVD release, include selectable images which take the viewer to image galleries. These articles are all technical in nature and include discussion on how the movie was photographed and the work of the action unit. There are also six storyboard comparisons and five image galleries that range from shot compositions and costumes through to publicity and conceptual sketches.

This set contains two episodes, Mrs. McGinty’s Dead and Cat Among the Pigeons. These are the two episodes airing on PBS’s Mystery! this summer. No one can sell a DVD set BEFORE the episodes air on television…you don’t see ABC selling DVDs of the current season of “LOST” do you? The UK has already aired all 4 episodes so the UK has released all 4 episodes on DVD. The US broadcasters (PBS) have their own broadcast schedule and therefore the DVD Sets must follow suit. The other 2 episodes (Third Girl & Appointment with Death) will be out on DVD AFTER they air, which is TBD. No one is trying to rob us fans; let’s just be patient.

Even though well into his 60’s, David Suchet continues to prove that he IS Hercule Poirot. Yes, the eyes look a little tired & the belly a little full, but even the great Hercule Poirot must age.

These 90 minute movies deserve multiple viewings as the mysteries are intricate and you could miss a clue if you turn your head. The stories, based on the full length novels MRS MCGINTY’S DEAD and CAT AMONG THE PIGEONS, are more flushed out than the older 60 minute episodes. One felt like clues were left out of those shorter episodes that prevented the viewer from solving the murder with Poirot. But here, all of the clues are there for you the viewer to pick up on, but are they what they seem?

I do miss the regular cast of characters in the old 60 minute series, Inspector Japp, Captain hastings & Miss Lemon are sadly missing from the 90 minute “Movie” versions of Poirot. However, they are present in the third disc which includes interviews with the actors who brought those characters to life. And you get to see David Suchet without his Poirot mustache.

While the production values are excellent, the wonderful ‘Art Deco’ style of the earlier shows is missing. I do wish they had kept that style going. ‘Art Deco’ buildings & objects do appear in these movies, but the style is gone from the production.

The bottom line is that I do like the more flushed out stories, but I miss some of the elements from the earlier productions. Still they are a ‘MUST-BUY”.

While I wish PBS would air all 4 new Poirot Movies this year (I don’t know if it is due to budget cuts or not), it is nice to get to see at least two of the new productions and look forward to two more later on. PBS is a co-producer of the series & they decide what Acorn Media can release in the U.S..

I have an early review copy & can say that the anamorphic 16:9 widescreen picture has some grain to it (it looked the same on the PBS-Hi Defenition broadcast). The sub-titles can help with unfamiliar British words. Bonus material is mostly limited to the 47 minute “Super Sleuths” special on disc #3. Discs 1 & 2 have very basic still frame biographies & filmographies. Quite honestly, the “Super Sleuths” special could have easily fit on a second layer of either disc 1 or 2, but it looks better to make it a 3-disc set. At least they are ’slim cases’ and do not take up too much space for the extra disc.

Not being one who seeks out the seemingly endless line of Harry Potter/Narnia/Lord of the Rings tropes (a little computer generated monster realm goes a long way), THE GOLDEN COMPASS came somewhat as a pleasant surprise. Yes, this is still a fantasy film, but the emphasis is more on stylish creation of various animals (in the forms of ‘daemons’ that accompany children as their souls, morphing into various animal life at will) than tiresome explosions and flying beasties.

Lyra (Dakota Blue Richards) is clearly the star of this adventure that explores the possibility of other, parallel worlds whose interaction with the world as we know it is controlled by various groups of good guys and bad guys, all seeking the source of secrecy contained in a Golden Compass that can only be read by a single girl – Lyra, a poor child living in the presence of scholars. Lyra’s uncle, Lord Asriel (Daniel Craig) places the Golden Compass in Lyra’s knowing hands and heads off to the far North to investigate the element that binds all life together – Dust. The tale is set in motion by the enigmatic Mrs. Coulter (Nicole Kidman) who gains Lyra’s confidence and offers to take her to the great North. All manner of adventures occur on the journey – friends of Lyra’s are threatened to be separated from their various daemons in the cruel hands of the bad guys, Lyra’s encounter with a witch Serafina Pekkala (Eva Green), her assistance from a friendly astronaut (Sam Elliott) and an armored bear – and with all fantasies, good prevails – or does it? Tune in for the very obvious next installment.

The pleasures are many, not the least of which are the voices and changing forms of the little animal daemons. The cast is excellent and the whole movie sails with yet another beautiful musical score by Alexandre Desplat. It is a nice diversion, but you have to love fantasy. Grady Harp, May 08

The special effects and the cinematography of “The Golden Compass” are wonderful, but it’s the subtext that really shines through, making for one of the most unique, fascinating, and entertaining fantasy films of recent memory. Just as it is in the film, the plot of Philip Pullman’s original novel suggested that free will was kept under strict control. The film brings this idea to the surface and allows the audience to analyze it; in a parallel universe–in which a person’s soul is separate and physically represented by an animal–a ruthless organization called the Magisterium tries to enforce rules against free will. Anyone who challenges its authority will be condemned as a heretic. Because they wanted to ensure total compliance, the Magisterium sought to destroy every last alethiometer, or golden compass–a magical, watch-like mechanism that literally tells the truth by pointing at strange symbols.

The one alethiometer that survived is now in the possession of Lord Asriel (Daniel Craig), a college professor who defies the Magisterium by confirming the existence of dust. I’m not referring to the allergy-inducing particles that settle on ordinary surfaces; I’m referring to the magical substance that’s somehow related to a rift between their universe and ours. Because this has put him at odds with the Magisterium, he gives the alethiometer to his orphaned niece, Lyra (Dakota Blue Richards), a young girl raised by the professors at a university. Lyra, who absolutely hates being called a lady, is clever, bold, and incredibly headstrong, with an adventurous spirit that occasionally gets her into trouble. Her spirit–or daemon, as referred to by the characters–is Pan (voiced by Freddie Highmore), who hasn’t quite decided which animal form to take. He spends most of his time as a ferret, but he also turns into a cat, a bird, and a mouse.

When Lyra hears that her uncle is traveling to the snowy north to find the dust and open this cross-dimensional rift, she wishes to join him. Asriel refuses to let her, and he warns her against speaking of dust to anyone. Here enters Mrs. Coulter (Nicole Kidman), the wicked, controlling head of the Magisterium; she quickly learns that the alethiometer is in Lyra’s possession and vows to reclaim it by tricking Lyra onto her good side. Mrs. Coulter’s true nature is soon revealed, and upon escaping, Lyra is put under the protection of the Gyptians, a band of rebels who were once aided by Lord Asriel. As they journey north with Lyra, she also meets: Serafina (Eva Green), an elegant, almost ethereal witch; Lee Scoresby (Sam Elliott), a grizzled pilot who speaks like a Texan from the Old West; and Iorek Byrnison (voiced by Ian McKellen), a disgraced polar bear who was once a great warrior among an entire clan of polar bears. To rid himself of his shame, he decides to reclaim his stolen armor and protect Lyra at whatever cost.

This is pretty much the foundation for the adventure that follows, an adventure so big that it isn’t over even when the movie ends. But in the grand scheme of things, the adventure is fairly superficial and only part of what makes it so wonderful; “The Golden Compass” is just as thought provoking as it is enjoyable, filled to the brim with intelligent, meaningful undertones. This isn’t to say that the film exists entirely as one big commentary–a good portion of it functions at a level of pure entertainment, from the convincing special effects to the stunning set designs to the fantastic mechanical creations. The story is not one of the future, the past, or even the present; its unique setting has essentially made any sense of time meaningless. And let’s not forget a number of lighthearted moments between Lyra and her best friend, Roger (Ben Walker), both of whom are more like bonded siblings.

But there is a dark side to this story. For one thing, the Magisterium is involved in a sinister plot to kidnap children and sever the connections between them and their daemons. The sooner they lose their spirits (pun definitely intended), the quicker they can be controlled. There’s also a general sense of foreboding that runs through the entire film, as if to say that certain things are not as simple as they may first appear. Consider the fact that a person’s physical pain is also felt by his or her daemon, and vice versa: What exactly will happen if one of them dies? Can one exist without the other? And how exactly are daemons a threat to free will?

The fact that I’m asking these questions is a good thing, because it proves that “The Golden Compass” is a stimulating film. Rarely is a fantasy story allowed to transcend the limiting clichés of princesses, castles, dragons, swords, and predictable Hero’s Journeys. Here’s a film that actually brings something new to the genre, something fresh, exciting, daring, and determined. This is not a mind-numbing rehash; it’s a thoroughly original experience, highlighted by delightful performances, a solid structure, and a well-rounded social commentary. I suppose I should make a note about the Catholic Church’s poor reception of this film, but why bother? Religion–or lack thereof–has nothing to do with it. It has everything to do with being engaging, smart, and imaginative.

This is one of the most thought provoking films I have seen in a very long time. We Feed the World actually presents a fairly balanced view of the food situation in the world. The balance comes in the last 15 minutes with a very frank direct interview with the former CEO of Nestle, Peter Brabeck. I actually haven’t felt compelled to take notes during a film in a very long time. The film is very very European, taking a stong EU view of the world; the US is mostly left out of the conversation.

The DVD menu is perfectly organized – each menu selection could be a good solid one hour discussion about the pros and cons of what was presented. Whether in a classroom or home, this is a film to discuss.

The film tours through wheat farming in Switzerland, a small fisherman in Brittany France, greenhouse tomatoes in Spain, hybrid seeds in Romania, soybeans in Brazil, chickens in Austria, and finally Nestle. Each topic is discussed in around 15 minute segments. There is an interview with a UN reporter on World Hunger that anchors each segment. A lot of statistics or facts are stated. It seems the desired effect is, oh my that is horrible, we should do something about that. However, there is usually a counterpoint when I considered these facts in more depth.

The film is beautifully shot, with excellent pacing. The dialog is well recorded, and there are some really wonderful background outdoor sounds – bugs, birds, and wind blowing through a wheat field. They all lead to an easy to watch film.

The film is not rated, just be warned that at 1:20, there is some pretty graphic views of chickens going to slaughter and just after their throats are cut – it is pretty graphic making you feel like becoming a vegetarian. Sadly, its just a fact of life if we are to eat meat. There is also a double f bomb tossed out by the Pioneer Seed person. The words are said without emotion or emphasis, and said by somebody with a very strong accent – my point, most people won’t even hear the words. Otherwise, this is an important film the whole family should view.

I really loved the debate this film set up in my mind. On the one hand, we would all love organically grown heirloom vegetables to go with our free range chicken. But on the other, the world has to be fed, and there just isn’t enough space, money or time to feed everyone in exactly that manner. At some point we have to realize, industrial food manufacture is one way huge masses of people can eat. It is better though, to eat what is grown locally whenever possible. Its so worth listening to this debate, discuss the ideas presented in the film. They are not simple black and white issues.

View the film. Ponder the information, do a little research. Discuss what it means. And draw your own conclusions.

We Feed The World is an excellent documentary that shows us the current state of food production from the points of view of the farmers (in both industrialized countries and developing countries), small scale fishermen, the food distributors, the consumers, farm animals, and the multinational food production corporations. The current situation is insane.

We currently have some very undesirable situations with people starving all over the world and GM (genetically modified) crops quickly replacing natural ones on farms the world over. We are eliminating natural crops that taste better and may be better for us than the GM ones. One of the film’s speakers, a representative from a multinational seed company, says that future generations of people may not ever know what a real tomato tastes like. Why on earth do food distributors find it necessary to truck tomatoes some 2,500 km across Europe? Why do we punish farmers in developing countries by dumping our excess produce on their markets cheaper than they can produce it themselves?

It seems like the only winners are the big multinational food corporations like Nestle Foods, whose president makes a speech at the end of the film saying that times have never been better. People have never had so much money. This is a great dvd to add to your collection if you would like a good overview about where we are and where we’re going with regards to food production, distribution and consumption.
