When I saw a trailer for this film, I saw it compared with “Fargo,” the Coen brothers classic. My spouse and I were both in need of a laugh so we went to see it.

I must agree with at least one other review that it’s an absurdly predictable story. Boy meets girl, they despise each other, yet fall in love and they all live happily ever after. That element of the story was a letdown. But there were enough laughs to redeem the story.

I’ll paraphrase, and perhaps add a little to another review: Rene plays Lucy Hill, a rising Yuppie corporate exec based in Miami. The company decides to send someone to Minnesota to close one of their plants. None of the guys will do it so Lucy volunteers. She, in true, corporate tradition, has her eye on corporate VP, something she’s going to get when she faithfully fulfills the company’s goals, right?

Buy,Download, Or Stream New In Town! Click Here

Well, when she gets to MN, she has so little perception of the conditions–cold, slippery–that she is, alas, a fish out of water. She meets her assistant, masterfully performed by Siobhan Fallon, who is an exaggeration of Frances McDormand’s role in “Fargo.” Her one-liners had both my spouse and I “ROFL”ing. I do have a comment though on Fallon’s (Blanche Gunderson’s) monolog: She asked Lucy if she’s found Jesus, and that became the cause for a burst of laughter from both Lucy and presumably the audience. I thought that question to be slightly incongruous; it’s something one would have more likely experienced in, say, Mississippi or Georgia than in New Ulm, MN.

Well, then, Lucy, while secretly trying to close the plant, meets fireman Ted Mitchell (Harry Connick) when she flew off the icy road. They eventually fall in love… Well, the synopsis has already been written here so I won’t repeat it.

In the process, not only is love fallen into, but Lucy decides that, shucks, these are nice people. (The story reminded me of Michael J. Fox’s “Doc Hollywood” and countless other scripts.) She decides to keep the place open, and they come up with a new product, blah, blah, blah.

From an honest perspective, while I was laughing at the script, I found that portion of the story to be a complete fantasy. Most of us know how corporations work these days. First, the product they came up with (no, I won’t give it away here and spoil the story) wouldn’t compete with the corporate, pre-packaged and advertised product. Second, no, the corporation’s not going to say, “Aw, shucks, let’s be nice to these folks whom Lucy told us are are so quaint.”

Then, without giving any more away, Lucy and Ted fall in love, and they all lived happily ever after.

Hmmm. I’m quite critical of the story. So why do I give it four stars? Because of the laughs.

Again, I think the idea of the accent was a product of McDormand’s academy award winning role in “Fargo.” In this film, they may have made a little more of a caricature out of it. One of the Minnesotan characters, by the way, was played by one of my heroines, Frances Conroy (I’m a big “Six Feet Under” fan). But it was so well done, it had me laughing thoughout.

Then there’s the scene when Ted and Lucy try to disguise their indiscretion so that Ted’s daughter didn’t know what happened, another side-buster. But the choreography necessary of Lucy while Ted and Lucy were hunting and nature called was worth the price of the ticket.

No, I won’t give away any more than that, but it was hysterical.

Again, as others have already said and more will surely say, if you’re after a soul-enhancing, humanitarian, or realistic story, this one might not be for you. That ain’t the way life works except maybe in the movies. but if you’d like some hearty laughs–maybe a little to deliver you from what’s going on in today’s economy, this is a side breaker.

Although marketed as a comedy, this has little in common with the DRECK that Hollywood has been churning out under the “comedy” label (e.g. Bride Wars) because the point of this film is to progress to more sophisticated characterization and understanding as its main character finds herself in a “fish out of water” setting, transplanted from Miami to a small city in Minnesota.

This film contains aspects of mild drama that enhance its credibility and respectability greatly. Characters become fully humanized as the film progresses, even if they at first seem like caricatures or stereotypes. That’s a main theme of the film – that people mis-judge each other all the time in ways that turn out to be unfair.

This is a good-hearted, well-played film that, although not really new in theme or plot, carries a message that is well worth repeating, and does it very well through good performances and an enjoyable script. Critics really do not serve the public well when they presume that something that’s been “done before” is therefore inferior as a result, for films within the same subgenre are never truly identical, and it all boils down to the problem that “critics” are reviewing EVERYTHING, regardless of their own prior interest in the film, and “critics” often lack any clear training or expertise to inform their opinions, and “critics” are often left simply reacting to each other in weird contests about who can find the film that is the most “original” – which usually ends up meaning the most aberrant and demeaning and cynical.

By contrast, “New in Town” delivers an “old-fashioned” message that truly deserves to be a Hollywood tradition… a nicely American message of overcoming the various sociocultural divides that exist in our country, of cutting through the many stereotypes that downplay and dismiss other people (and categories and groups), and instead coming to appreciate the good aspects of different lifestyles and preferences that exist throughout the country.

In this film, some of the social divisions that are addressed and dealt with include the urban/rural (or “small town”) split, a blue-collar/white collar split, a college educated versus trades/crafts skill-based social class division, monetary wealth vs. budgeted fulfillments, religious/secular divides, and conflicting aspects of provincial/cosmopolitan perspectives. This is all enough to compose a very laudable, effective, engaging, entertaining, and yes, even thought-provoking film! Of the kind that can actually have people reflecting on and working on improving their own shortcomings and building bridges to get along with others or at least able to see their points-of-view.

Very well done!!!!

It’s from Common Sense Media:

“Created by Dino Stamatopoulos, a writer known for his regular contributions to adult comedy shows like Late Night with Conan O’Brien and TV Funhouse, this sinfully clever stop-motion series packs a wallop of a message in a short amount of time — and, in essence, that’s part of the problem. In fact, so much controversial humor peppers the show’s 15-minute run that the shock value of the humor could overshadow the program’s subtle message.

So while adults are more likely to see MORAL OREL for what it is — a biting social satire mocking religious fundamentalism and hypocrisy within the Christian church — kids (even some older teens) probably won’t be able to appreciate the true sophistication of the humor. (And in case you were wondering, young children definitely won’t get the joke.)

Borrowing its distinctive animation style from classic Rankin-Bass shows like Davey and Goliath, Moral Orel follows the often-shocking misadventures of 11-year-old Orel Puppington (voiced by Carolyn Lawrence), a devoutly Christian boy who tries his best to live life by “the book” but often misinterprets God’s teachings. Week after week, Orel’s good intentions lead to disaster.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Moral Orel, Vol. 1, The Unholy Edition! Click Here

But instead of learning from his mistakes, Orel is usually led astray by his pseudo-reflective father, Clay (Scott Adsit), whose advice is rarely helpful and always misses the mark. For example, at the end of an episode chronicling Orel’s brief addiction to crack cocaine, Mr. Puppington cautions Orel that crack “is a gateway to slang,” prompting the boy to solemnly vow: “When I do drugs, I’m going to speak properly.” Parents should be aware that those are the types of “lessons” kids could inadvertently learn from watching this show.

Fans of Moral Orel will undoubtedly enjoy South Park and will probably also get a kick out of revisiting old episodes of Davey and Goliath for some pointed comparisons. Other recommendations include Strangers with Candy, King of the Hill, and The Simpsons.”

And a Common Sense Note states:

Common Sense Note

Parents need to know that while this satirical Cartoon Network comedy is animated, it’s part of the Adult Swim line-up for a reason: It’s rife with graphic humor and isn’t appropriate for young children. (For example, when the 11-year-old Orel takes a drag from his very first crack pipe, he snaps at his talking Jesus figurine and tells him to shut up.) Troubling content aside, however, the show can serve as a way for parents and older teens to talk about the pitfalls of religious fanaticism — although families who are deeply religious may find the program offensive.

Families can discuss the ways in which religious dogma can be misinterpreted by those with good intentions. Does a person who is considered to be religious always act morally? What statement are the creators of this series making about the state of modern-day Christianity? How does this cartoon compare with Davey and Goliath, the early 1960s animated series it gently parodies?

Yes, there are jokes about crack addiction and zombies, but the real gems in this show are the clever wordplay, the well thought out characterizations, and hidden details. Moral Orel is not a show with pop-culture references, cheap cartoon violence, or stoner non-sequiters. It is a refreshingly honest and relevent satire – not to mention some incredible character animation!

Nope. Alien: Resurrection holds the title as thje worst Alien movie. This film simply should have been the END of the Alien series, or at least for Ripley. As far as I am concerned, this IS the last movie, because Resurrection is not a part of the Alien series, it is more of a ‘wacky spin-off adventure’.

In this violent, but sometimes poignant film, we see the survivors of the Sulaco, Ripley, Hicks, Newt and Bishop peacefully in hypersleep, drifting home. Unfortunately, they had failed to realize something very important. When the Queen managed to get on the dropship, she had also laid an egg where she hid on the ship. While drifting back to earth, the egg hatched. The facehugger tried to get into Newt’s capsule, and the shattering glass pierced the creatures, its acidic blood eating through the floor causing a fire. Then the terror begins yet again…

The Sulaco’s emergency prep drops the cryo tubes into an EEV(Emergency Escape Vehicle) and ejects it out into space, with the facehugger still on board. IT plummeted into the gravitational pull of Fiorina ‘Fury’ 161, a double-Y chromo prison facility. The EEV plummets into the ocean with disastrous results.

Be prepared to break any emotional attachments you made to the surviving characters. The landing was quite grisly. The inmates lift the tattered EEV out of the ocean and into the junk pile, bringing RIpley, the only survivor, to the medical facility. However, as the EEV is placed in the garbage heap, one of the in-mate’s Rottweiler is aroused by movement in the EEV…it is the facehugger.

Shortly thereafter, we see a brand new breed of alien. With the replicated genes of a dog, this alien runs on all fours, is incredibly fast, and is by far the meanest Alien we have ever seen in this movie series yet! When the Warden does not beleive Ripley’s story, even after some of the inmates are turning up murdered, it is up to her and her new found friend, Dr. Clemens, to try and convince them all what they are dealing with, but it may already be too late, as Ripley herself is carrying with her a horrible secret, that not even she knows about yet…

Although this movie got bad reviews, and is my least favorite among the trilogy(I do not consider Resurrection a part of the series), I definitely think that the Runner, or Dog Alien, is probably the best alien in all the movies. Unbeleivably vicious and just, to quote Superintendant Andrews, ‘Generally Unpleasant’, the beast has a mean streak and often toys with the prisoners, making this the darkest and most violent of the trilogy.

The bad parts about the movie are obvious. After seeing the Colonial marines in action, it is tough to see the events of this movie. You will miss the marines. Another very troubling aspect is the deahts of Hicks and Newt, whom Ripley had strived so very hard to rescue in the last movie, only to have their lives sorrowfully taken from them. Seeing Hicks die, as my favorite character from Aliens, was upsetting. The acting isn’t exactly top notch, but you will grow to like a few of the prisoners, namely Morse and Dillon. Not the best in the trilogy, but it definitely brings a good closure to the series. Unfortunately, Alien: Resurrection ruined this closure by bringing us a rather poor plot and extremely poor acting, not to mention a whole new take on the Aliens, which i felt was stupid and unnecessary. Keep Alien 3 as the final movie. Watch Alien: Resurrection if you are in the mood for a ‘wacky spin-off’, because that is all it is.

I remember the long wait between the release of this movie and “Aliens” and the great amount of anticipation that was built up around this movie considering how extraordinary the first two films were and just imagining how great this one was “going” to be. Then its release date came and it received generally bad reviews and collectively, the majority of the fans were highly disappointed by it, including myself. That being said, I was quite reluctant to spend the money on this DVD but after reading some of the other positive reviews I decided to give this film one more chance and now, after having watched it again I would have to say I’ve completely changed my mind.

Alien 3 just wasn’t as bad as I remembered it to be from that one time viewing in the theater so many years ago and in fact, stylistically, it’s a movie that was ahead of its time. Ultimately, I think what turned so many people off of this film when it was released is that it was so dramatically different from the first two that it initially just didn’t seem as though it belonged in the mythos that is the Alien legacy. The one thing about this film that does make it drag is its pacing. What the director appeared to be reaching for was the same feel that “Alien” engendered but in the end, in reaching for that intense atmosphere didn’t always work and only resulted in the pace slowing down and too little suspense. As stated above though, thematically it was just years ahead of its time and I believe, were it a movie that were originally released more recently, with some minor changes, it might’ve garnered much more success in the theaters.

Performance wise, Sigourney Weaver does just as wonderful a job with this film as she did with the first two and, not to mention, she co-produced the film, further showing her support for the script and this addition to the Alien mythos. Charles S. Dutton’s role in the film is “over the top,” as his acting usually is and it fits quite well with the character.

David Fincher, who took up the directing mantle for “Alien 3″ deserves a fair amount of credit for the thematic style of this film, bringing the original story and screenplay to fruition. Twelve years ago, I would’ve said don’t ever let the man direct again, but this second viewing of “Alien 3″ and after seeing some of the other films he’s directed since, I would definitely have to say that he is a very good director!

This Collector’s Edition release comes with two options, the original 1992 Theatrical version or a 2003 Special Edition. One note of caution, the Special Edition doesn’t really add too much to the film, but of the small portion that is added, it helps to set up the story that much better. The THX certification and 5.1 Dolby Surround is perfect for the film, bringing out the score beautifully!

The Premise:

As Ripley, Hicks, Newt and Bishop are slumbering away in hyper sleep, hoping to next wake up near Earth, the ship suddenly encounters problems of the alien kind. Being the good futuristic starship that it is, it kindly ejects Ripley and the bodies of her companions on a prison planet. Ripley awakens to find herself on this prison planet and not long thereafter, prisoners start showing up dead and Ripley herself finds that her worst nightmare has come true…

What follows from there, as stated above, is most certainly not the best of the Alien series but it is most definitely a lot better movie than my initial assessment of it had been. I would definitely recommend this film to any and all fans of the Alien series, as I believe it plays an integral part in the mythos. {ssintrepid}

Do not confuse this with Joan Crawford’s ‘47 classic, the Oscar nominated role that has became one of Joan’s defining pictures. Only an actress who’s career spanned 6 decades can play in two pictures, in two different decades with the same title. (BTW, in case you’re wondering “Possessed” from 1947 is much better with a totally different plot.) In 1931 Joan stared in 4 major motion pictures, (3 with Clark Gable) and “Possessed” was certainly the one that cemented them in history as one of the most beloved and intriguing movie couples. Because they each had such a genuine endearment and chemistry in this picture. “Possessed” follows the standard Joan Crawford/MGM story…Beautiful girl meets handsome boy, doesn’t know what to do about her past;in the end finds happiness… But this picture is especially memorable because MGM teams Joan with Clark Gable. They were always magical to watch together. They both always lit up the screen, because anyone could tell that when Joan looked into Clark Gable’s eyes she had fire in hers. Joan’s brief comments on the making of this film: Back with Clark, both of us in strong parts, great reviews. Clearance Brown again, thank God. The movie also reminds me of “The Bride Wore Red” (another of Joan’s classics) because Marian (Joan’s character) decides to reinvent herself as a woman of society to lure her man into her web; she doesn’t want anyone to find out her true identity because if they do they will see that she was just a shopgirl who had nothing but a pretty face and a kind heart. “Possessed” will teach you that Joan Crawford can never rape the willing.

I just had the opportunity to finally see “Pom Poko,” thanks to Disney’s stateside DVD release. Fortunately, the dub is fantastic — any qualms about “confusing” Japanese folktales and such seem to have been taken care of with the quality translation. The voice actors (only one “name” actor, a very fine/unrecognizable Jonathan Taylor Thomas) acquit themselves quite nicely, and it might be one of the best dubs I’ve ever heard.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Pom Poko! Click Here

The infamous enlarged scrotums, I’m happy to report, are such a small part of the entire experience that the fact that it was so dwelled on by dozens upon dozens of people for years prior to domestic DVD release is saddening. At first, yes, when a “pouch” is magically (and humorously) transformed into a red rug, it’s amusing and a bit shocking. But that feeling wears off almost instantly.

Even though they changed the references of “scrotum” to “pouch,” I’m still surprised Disney had the balls (pun intended) to release it, given their standards for “family”-esque (safe and arguably predictable) entertainment. There are a couple glimpses of actual nudity (breasts) and some humans die in rather morbid ways. I’m not inferring that I wish they hadn’t released it, for if they had not I would have never seen it. I’m just happy with their decision. For once, at least in recent times, I feel the need to thank Disney whole heartedly.

The film itself is such a pleasure. It moves briskly, contains *beautiful* images and is endlessly entertaining. A large part of it’s success is due to the constant narration; as others have noted, it almost seems like an exquisite documentary at times.

The story is simple yet effective: humans are destroying a community of tanukis, and the tanukis do everything they can to help preserve their home in way of transformation. It’s often funny and adorable, but what’s somewhat unexpected is the amount you’ll be moved by their struggle. The ending, criticized by some, almost moved me to tears. I won’t explain what happens, but some wise things are said.

As you probably know, the tanukis are somewhat distractingly called “raccoons” in the dub. I’m willing to forgive Disney for this obvious error, though, as they resemble the latter to a pretty high degree. And I’m sure it made it easier on the translators for lip synchronization (two syllables).

Not so surprising: “Pom Poko” was the top box office smash in Japan the year it came out (and Japan’s own submission for best foreign film Oscar). Regardless of the minor violence/nudity/inflated scrotums (ahem), this film will appeal to anyone with a heart and a brain. It’s not some minor little piece about tanukis humorously fending off humans, even if it sometimes appears to be. It’s a major statement about man vs. nature, and it’s often beautiful and witty and intelligent, the sort of thing most non-animated films aspire to be.

I know this might sound rash and pretentious, but I watched two films tonight: “Laputa” (Japanese with subtitles) and “Pom Poko” (English dub). Oddly, I liked this film more. Here’s hoping that master director Takahata’s underrated treasure will win over more viewers, thanks to Disney’s recent bare-bones DVD release and the eventual airing on Turner Classic Movies this January.

Fans who remember Isao Takahata best for his relentless tearjerker, GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES, could very well react with surprise and shock upon viewing POM POKO. This lavishly animated tale about raccoons battling for their homeland (which was the biggest hit of 1994 in Japan) isn’t so much a heartwrenching tragedy as it is an interesting amalgam of humor, drama, and action–all delivered in a way that is daringly original for animation. At times, the viewer gets treated to scenes which recall the one-two-three emotional punch of GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES, but even though the tone of the movie is somber, a handful of lighthearted moments elevate the overall production out of depression.

As this is a Studio Ghibli film, production values are spectacular. Backgrounds are painted with a tasteful mixture of simplicity and art, and the raccoons are as cuddlesome as you would expect–especially when they shape-shift from “ordinary” animals to Saturday-morning-cartoon style critters in the style of shows such as CARE BEARS. (If you’re scratching your head while reading this, don’t be alarmed–according to Japanese folklore, raccoons have the power to transform into anything–including human beings!) The actual animation is as colorful and imaginative as you might expect from a Ghibli movie–and there is one scene where we are treated to cameo appearances by Porco Rosso, Kiki, and Totoro.

While POM POKO has a story to tell and a meaningful message for one to think about, its character and plot aspects may come across as a bit off-putting to viewers expecting a typical animated feature. Indeed, while some raccoons identify themselves with distinguishable names and/or personalities (for example, Gonta is a burly, rough-and-ready raccoon who is always looking for a fight, while Oroku is the “wise woman” of the tribe), the story offers little in the way of character development. In fact, most of the action in the story is narrated (by Maurice LaMarche in English, Kokondei Shinchou in Japanese), which elevates the overall effect of the movie to that of a semi-documentary. For the most part, this approach works to a very interesting degree and is a refreshing change of pace. However, there were some scenes in the movie where I wished the narration could have been reduced a little bit, as it sometimes gets in the way of appreciating the beauty of the visuals onscreen.

Aside from this, the biggest controversy about POM POKO seems to be centered on several scenes where the raccoons can inflate and/or transform their testicles(!) for multiple purposes. One particular scene involves a raccoon flattening his testicles against a truck, causing its driver to crash. Such moments may be alarming to children, but it is important to remember that while we see the testicles at times, the movie is, after all, animated. Even still, while a Japanese audience may take such scenes naturally, squeamish viewers in America could react differently. In fact, as a solution to handling this kind of translation issue, the English language version (produced once again by Disney) refers to the testicles as “pouches”. That’s a somewhat awkward decision, but it sure beats digitally removing the testicles from the scenes they’re in.

POM POKO was obviously a nightmare for English dub writers Cindy and Donald Hewitt to translate (especially since much of the movie is rooted in Japanese culture), but I really have to commend them for their efforts. There is some Americanizing here and there, but there was little, if any, that I could find missing in their script. In fact, I was most impressed at how they handled the songs; while at least two of them come across as a little contrived and/or corny, others flow so naturally that you never would have sworn that these were originally Japanese folksongs.

Another interesting aspect of the dub is the voice acting. With the exception of Jonathan Taylor Thomas (star of TV’s HOME IMPROVEMENT), the cast consists of veteran performers who are known for cartoon voice work; Tress MacNeille, John DiMaggio, Russi Taylor, Andre Stojka, and Clancy Brown, to name a few. Whether this was done to cut down on costs for big-name stars or for avoiding aural distraction is unclear, but when listening to the spirit and energy that the aforementioned voice artists give their characters, it really doesn’t matter. For purists, though, the original Japanese language track IS included on the DVD, as is a gorgeous visual transfer (and a disappointingly skimpy supply of extras–the only low point of this otherwise top-notch presentation from Disney).

POM POKO may be an unusual entry from Isao Takahata, and its foreign aspects may not appeal to everyone, but if given a chance, the film offers a colorful display of imagination and pathos as well as an experience unlike many that one will find from ordinary cartoons.

I had the privilege of seeing this excellent film last week at the AFI Silver Theater, which recently ran a month-long tribute to the late, great director Elia Kazan. Kazan is notable for his collaborations with a young Marlon Brando, directing the rising star in three films during the early 50s: “A Streetcar Named Desire,” “Viva Zapata!” and the masterpiece “On the Waterfront.” Many film critics put “Baby Doll” right behind “On the Waterfront” when ranking Kazan’s filmography. Having seen it, I would likely do the same (though I haven’t seen all of Kazan’s films yet).

Eli Wallach, who plays Silva Vaccaro in “Baby Doll,” was on hand to introduce the film at the AFI Silver. He spoke for about 45 minutes and, though he’s in his 80s, had the audience (about 40 or 50 of us) roaring with laughter. I was amazed at how many top actors and directors he’s worked with. He spoke mainly about “Baby Doll,” which he says is his favorite film.

Here are a few things I learned from Eli Wallach about “Baby Doll”: His hands were NOT anywhere near Carroll Baker’s private parts during the notoriously erotic swing scene, as reported in many a film review at the time. Rather, they were resting on a space heater; though “Baby Doll” takes place in the heat of summer, the film was shot during winter. In fact, the actors had to suck on ice cubes before each take so their breath wouldn’t show. Wallach spent more time in the iconic baby crib than Baby Doll herself. This was Wallach’s first film.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Tennessee Williams Film Collection! Click Here

“Baby Doll” is based on two one-act plays by Tennessee Williams: “27 Wagons Full of Cotton” and “The Unsatisfactory Supper.” Anyone familiar with Tennessee Williams knows that his writing is very southern and very steamy. “Baby Doll” may be the steamiest, most erotic thing he ever wrote.

The owner of a private cotton gin, Archie Lee, has his hands full with “child bride” Baby Doll, who sleeps in a crib and won’t let her husband touch her until she turns 20. With her birthday in a few days, Baby Doll, played by the impossibly-cute Carroll Baker, is threatening to “withhold” unless her aging, doltish husband starts raking in the dough. After their furniture is hauled off, Lee, played by Karl Malden, sets fire to the new cotton gin that’s been taking away his business. Silva Vaccaro, a firey Sicilian businessman played by Eli Wallach, vows to exact revenge on the person who burned down his gin. Suspicions lead him directly to Lee’s doorstep where, over the course of an afternoon, he proceeds to destroy the man’s life.

The heart of the movie is Vaccaro’s seduction of Baby Doll. No flesh is ever shown, nothing explicit is ever uttered and I believe there’s only one kiss in the entire film. Regardless, this is some of the hottest, most erotic footage in American film. The dialogue, the acting, the way it’s directed: the overall effect is like watching passionate sex, yet it’s simply two people talking – and they’re not even talking about sex! To me, this type of filmmaking is magical, when the director conjures something out of thin air that isn’t even there.

“Baby Doll” was highly, highly controversial upon its release in 1956. It was condemned by The Legion of Decency, an organization of the Roman Catholic Church, who claimed that it was immoral. Because of the hype, it was withdrawn from over 70 percent of U.S. theaters before its premiere. Several film critics at the time called it the most pornographic film ever released by a film studio. Today however, very few would likely get in a fuss over it.

“Baby Doll” is a great film that now ranks among my favorites of all time. It’s not only sexy, but very funny, well-acted, well-written and expertly directed. It may seem a little dated to most modern viewers, but I personally think it holds up quite well (but then, I do watch a lot of old films.) If and when “Baby Doll” is produced for DVD, I hope the studio considers Eli Wallach for the audio commentary.

This review isn’t of the great movies contained but the DVD set and their respective presentations.

first..let me say the bonus DVD “Tennesse Williams South”…is exceptional..its a film made about and with him in 1974 and besides his own readings of his work , which are illuminating, it features legends like Burl Ives and Jessica Tandy re-creating his dialog..simply timeless!

now..onto the Discs/Movies

the bonus featurettes are all very well done however, seemingly shorter than they should/could be. By that I mean…they have current interviews with Karl Malden and Eli Wallach for BABYDOLL and Rip Torn for Sweet Bird of Youth and the ever beautiful Jill St John for The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone, and yet the amount of face time these actual stars of the films in question get is barely a line here or there? Not that the featurettes aren’t good…they are..it just seems they could be a could 10minutes longer each…

now…the opposite problem is in the second disc of Streetcar Named Desire….the feature length (90min) Elia Kazan: A directors Journey is wonderful..its a decade or so old but was done while he was still with us and his participation raised it above the level of talking heads documentaries of the day. The strange thing is that the new featurettes on this disc feature way too much culled from the aforementioned feature. I don’t understand….WB has wonderful featurettes on all the movies that seem truncated and then BLOATS out the Streetcar featurettes with duplicate material from itself? Only the current footage of Karl Malden saves the Streetcar featurettes from their own plagerism.

Now..the films themselves are all in very good shape considering they go back half a century. I wasn’t a particular fan of Tennesse Williams..but after viewing all these films and the bonus film…i most certainly put him in the genius category and am looking for more.

Also, the press is making a big deal about Marlon Brando’s screen test which is being included in the Streetcar DVD bonus features…its only a curiosity , not amazing by any stretch. What is far more interesting is Karl Malden’s lovely memories of his friendship and admiration for Mr Brando….truly touching and mezmorizing. Malden is a treasure of an actor who starred in more fine films than any but the most ardent fan would know as he was usually second billed…but he IS the star of this set.

Great American films and unlike Universals shameless packaging..WB continues to present these types of films lovingly with extras..oh yeah..and the commentaries aren’t bad either…much to enjoy in this set.

The actors especially Mario Maurer are so cute and loveable.

The story is a little long-winded but the acting is good, and the story line is very touching.

Must see, if you like gay teen love stories.

“Love of Siam”

Melancholy Hope

“Love of Siam” (Strand Releasing) which at first appears to be a gay themed movie is actually more than that. It looks at and deals with the different kinds of relationships and acts of love between people and love in all of its forms. Aside from that the movie is about coming of age as the characters deal with their pasts and overcome grief. Family problems as well as the story of two boys falling in love are what we see here. Tong and Mew are forced to confront loss–Tong lost his sister while Mew lost his grandmother. The center of the film is the gay love story about two schoolboys who just happen to be gay. But mixed in with this gay love story is the subplot of family grief.

When the movie begins both Tong and Mew have girlfriends that they have difficulty in relating to and the guys also have very strong feelings for each other The actors are admirable and this multi-layered family drama has something for everyone. Although the film comes in at over 2 hours, I was not bored for a minute but was certainly aware that a little cutting would make this a tighter and more enjoyable film.

A nice upgrade from the 4-disc Billy Jack Collection. The major improvement here is that all 4 films have been digitally remastered in their original widescreen aspect ratio from the original film negatives. The color and the clarity look superb with very little artifacts. Though I just got this set and haven’t watched each film in their entirety, I did sample the beginning of each disc and was amazed at how breathtaking and clear the opening scenes were for both “Billy Jack” and “Trial.” The transfers for “Born Losers” and “Washington” look just as fantastic. These really make the transfers on the last set look inferior, especially since I played them back to back and did a comparison.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Billy Jack! Click Here

The sound has also been digitally remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround. and each film includes both a newly recorded 2005 commentary track from the Laughlin family as well as the original 2000 filmmaker commetary from the last set. The discs come in a slipcase with digipak and each disc has it’s own tray with the original poster art for each film beneath the tray and printed on the actual disc. The running times for each are “Born Losers” (113 minutes); “Billy Jack” (118 minutes); “Trial…” (171 minutes); “Washington” (114 minutes).

The set also includes a 5th disc of bonus features. Unfortunately it’s not as good as I would’ve hoped, but I’m not complaining since I’m so impressed with the transfers of the actual films themselves. The bonus features included a very short documentary about the making of the films; Trivia Quiz; several original TV ad for ‘Billy Jack” only; Billy Jack Book Excerpt; Cut-Your-Own Fight contest info; Website info; and a photo gallery. Nothing too impressive.

Overall the transfers themselves are widescreens and look and sound amazing, enough for me to say that alone is worth the upgrade.

I have always been puzzled by the hostile reaction of critics to Billy Jack. The puzzling aspect is not the negativity itself, but rather the almost blanket misrepresentation or – to be charitable – misunderstanding, of what the movie is about. Thus potential buyers are disserviced by the prevailing conventional wisdom i.e. “Billy Jack preaches peace while practising violence”; “Billy Jack wants to have its cake and eat it with regard to pacifism”; “the film is hypocritical” etc. In reality, the character of Billy Jack NEVER preaches peace. The only hint of this being true comes when he REJECTS Delores Taylor’s view that violence in the face of violent bigotry won’t solve anything. Given his instincts as a Shoshone warrior and a Green Beret trained (ironically by the US government) for war – against the extent of brutality of the bigots he faces, there is clearly no room for touchy-feely encounter sessions. These morons are not merely exercising speech, thought or association, but systematic physical violence on the defenceless. So Billy Jack’s struggle to reconcile his violent rage with the principles of the Freedom School is a lost cause from the outset(which Billy himself admits when – referring to his efforts to embrace the pacifist influence of the Freedom School – he says to a racist bully, “I try, I really try … but when I see this girl of such a beautiful spirit suffer this indignity … I just go BERSERK! “) To critics safely weaned on the quiet, unthreatening dignity of Sidney Poitier, the Billy Jack character threatened equivalent response to oppression that cared neither for the approval, feelings or physical well-being of knowing oppressors. Revolutionary indeed! And while Virgil Tibbs would soak it up, confident his own intellectual superiority will bring justice in the end, Billy Jack will not give an inch of ground to people who had already stolen enough. Result: the bigots NEVER mess with HIM in the first instance – always someone weaker. Yet, it is precisely here that the movie parts company with the character in terms of point-of-view. For while Billy is clear in cause and action, the movie is purposefully less so. In the end, Billy’s actions result in his arrest. Whether the actual benefits of his actions (guarantee of the Freedom School’s existence; annual gubernatorial progress review of Indian affairs etc.) have been worth the cost or have, in reality, made any real difference to the overall mileu of oppression is left debatable. NOT because the movie “has its cake and eats it”, but because there are no glib, easy answers by which to provide neat resolutions. Should Billy be praised, condemned or something in-between? The movie honestly doesn’t know and sensibly leaves this to the viewer to decide. Coming from a society where the issue of defensive violence in the face of apartheid brutality was always an ongoing anxiety, the movie’s delineation of contradictory but related progressive tendencies did not ring false at all. In fact, its pioneering depiction (try and dispute that!) of race conflict from the point of view of the oppressed was deemed so incendiary by the apartheid government that it was banned (along with Soldier Blue and Jesus Christ Superstar). Yet, even here South of the equator, Billy Jack was a movie phenomenon in the 1970s, as we attended secret underground viewings with our parents – one eye on the lookout for security police raids. Check out the initial, aloof response of US critics at the time and you’ll also see life imitating art in ironic ways as critics retreated into their smug class and race cocoons in an effort to bury Billy Jack. Yet today, given its box office numbers and its massive international impact, Billy Jack ranks as the best example of the intermittent disjuncture between film critics and the movie-going public. Billy Jack may seem naive now – and the experimental theatre scenes now suggest Zanuck may have been right (for the wrong reasons) to want them excluded – but its nobility is untainted. Forget the sour mumblings of mainstream critics (the same people who proclaimed True Lies “a quality movie”)and make this great movie a part of your collection. As a straight action movie, you’d be hard-pressed to find better contemporaries (yes, Billy Jack may have dated somewhat but has anyone checked out Bullitt or The French Connection recently?). As an action movie with some things on its mind other than fast cars, big explosions and blonde babes, I defy anyone to find me an equal. In any case, the title song (”One Tin Soldier”) by Coven is in and of itself worth the unbelievable DVD purchase price. From its spectacular Mustang-rustling opening sequence to Billy’s final surrender, Billy Jack remains one of the best examples of independent movie-making at its most threatening to the Establishment. Today, only John Sayles and Ken Loach can still lay claim to that honor. I had been looking for copies of Billy Jack and Born Losers (the orginal Billy Jack movie) for almost 15 years before discovering it for sale on this site. Since receiving my shipment, I have watched them repeatedly and not been disappointed. Neither will you.

All I want in life is one simple thing:

Buy,Download, Or Stream Star Wars Trilogy! Click Here

The original Star Wars trilogy as seen in it’s original theatrical release, in the best possible format technology will allow: BLU-RAY.

That’s it.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Star Wars Trilogy! Click Here

That means:

1- Take the original three films (SW, Empire, Jedi), do NOT change the story at all…don’t add in new footage, cut old footage, change any story elements…don’t make Greedo shoot first, Luke scream, Yoda dress in drag, Threepio with a gold metal boner, Jawas dancing around a campfire as they cook s’mores, Wampa enhancements, CGI-ing a Colt-45 bottle into Lando’s hand, putting Jabba’s fat sister in the same sexy outfit as Slave Leia, or ANYTHING other than what folks actually saw in the theatres the first time the films were released…

2- Take as clean-image print of the original films you can find and transfer it over to 1080P.

3- Take the sound and adjust it over to as high-def a format as you can without adding anything new, altering anything, etc, just mix it to sound as good as your studios can possibly get it to sound in my home theatre…ah ah ah…George…I see you starting to add new Ewok songs…stop right there and just do as I say…

4- Now add an extra disk in each package for bonus features such as “making of” documentary, director and actor’s commentary, special effects features, and all the other material we buy on dvds from bootleggers at Comic-Con because you don’t release them officially…

5- Release them NOW…not when my great grandchildren are having great grandchildren…I know you plan to release a different variation of the original Star Wars trilogy every 2 years and STILL never want to give the fans what they actually want (see #1-4 above), and plan to use your special effects team to turn your aging human body into a cyborg-hybrid-clone so you can live for 200 years or more all while you pull the same cruel tease to your fans every 2 years…but just this once George…JUST…THIS…ONCE…remove your fist from my rectum (is my prostate okay?), and do the right thing…give the fans the ONE version of the trilogy that they want to buy…

…and if you do this for us, we’ll cancel our plans for the geek-raid on Skywalker Ranch in Star Wars costumes that we have planned…and we’re not going to bathe before the raid George…just imagine…500,000 pimple-faced-overweight-unbathed nerds walking around your property in stormtrooper armor and ewok suits…it’ll be just like Comic-Con…

So please do the right thing for us just this once George…the fans will thank you, Amazon will thank you, and in one fell swoop, you’ll be helping the nation’s sagging economy with a sudden massive influx of consumer cash that will suddenly be spent…Obama will thank you too…

thanks,

I want to warn others not to make the mistake I did. This is not that beautiful director’s cut which was issued on Laser and VHS. If that is what you are looking for, WAIT.

I am completely in awe why the studio would release the trimmed down version of this film on DVD!

Please please release the 202 minute version.

This review refers to the MGM DVD edtion(2000 release) of “The Alamo”(1960)…..

So many times in History, man has had to make the decision of whether to accept things the way they are and live in terror, or rise up against his oppressor no matter what the cost, to make life better for future generations. “The Alamo” is one story of the brave people in American History, who stood and fought for what they believed in, against overwhelming odds.John Wayne put his heart and soul into this epic story and breathes life into these dedicated and heroic Americans.

Col.Davey Crockett,Col.Jim Bowie and Col. William Travis are the driving force behind a group of less then 200 untrained men and their families, barracaded in an old Texas mission(”The Alamo”), being used as a fort to fend of the advances of the immense army being lead by Generalissimo Santa Anna. All knowing that they will probably lose their lives, and they could leave without shame at any time, they all stay to defend the right of freedom, and to give General Sam Houston the time he needs to prepare his army for battle. It is a touching and gripping account of the events, of the battles, and of the growing comraderie within the fort.

John Wayne produced, directed and stars as a very convincing Davey Crockett. Richard Widmark as Jim Bowie and Laurence Harvey as Col Travis are fabulous in the roles as the two Colonels at odds with each other but are united for the cause.

Also starring is Richard Boone(every time I see him I expect the old “Palidan” music to start playing), a very young Frankie Avalon and western legend Chill Wills, who recieved a nod from Oscar for his performance as “Beekeeper” in the supporting actor catagory. The music is hauntingly beautiful, and will stay with you long after the film is over. Dimitri Tiomkin won a Golden Globe for his scoring as did Paul Francis Weber for his equally beautiful lyrics of “The Green Leaves of Summer”.The cinematography, also garnering a nomination from Oscar, makes this film a joy to watch.

I had previously taped this film from a classic film channel, finally bought the DVD, and when I saw the brillance of this transfer and heard it in the enhanced 5.1 Surround I was in movie heaven. The picture in the original theatrical widescreen and the colors looked magnificent. Every sound from the galloping of the horses, to the cannons blasting, the dialouge and the music were crystal clear. There is also a great documentary included on the making of the film, where you will see the great John Ford making an appearance on the set and adding his expertise as well.It may also be viewed in French and Spanish and also has subtitles in those languages.

So why only 4 stars for my rave review of this film and the DVD?….As I mentioned I had this on tape and watched it many times. I noticed a couple of my favorite scenes are now missing and the film somewhat shorter in length. I especially missed the little birthday party scene(if you have seen it before, you know what I am talking about). This scene to me, depicted the growing closeness of the people inside the mission and the family like atmosphere.

This film is a sentimental favorite of mine, and I really hope someday MGM will release the entire film to DVD, until then I will certainly enjoy this terrific transfer. It’s absolutely worth the view.

“Remember the Alamo”…and enjoy…..Laurie
