First of all let me start off by saying that although Rock star didn’t do very well at the box office, I thought it was a lot of fun and it made for an enjoyable hour and three quarters viewing. Loosely based on the life of Tim `Ripper’ Owens, the office supplies salesman who replaced Rob Halford in Judas Priest, Rock Star combines satire, morality, romance and a good old fashioned rags to riches storyline.

So what’s the plot? Salesman and ordinary working stiff Chris Cole (Mark Wahlberg) and wannabe rock star has been obsessed for years in his devotion to British heavy metal band Steel Dragon. As part of a tribute band, he is derided by his older brother who feels he should get a real job and his devotion to mimicry is so much that even his fellow tribute band members are sick of him, and they eventually dump him. Comforted by his patient and devoted girlfriend (Jennifer Anniston) Chris swears that he will prove them all wrong but he even he is shocked when he is invited to audition as the replacement singer in the band he adores. Of course he wins the gig and so begins a journey through the world of a rock idol, full of drugs, groupies, drink and general excessive behaviour.

I’m not quite sure why this movie wasn’t that successful. Sure it’s not the greatest movie you will ever see and it offers no original insight but there’s also very little to dislike about it. Critics may complain that it’s neither full on satire such as `This Is Spinal Tap’ or that it is full of clichés but this is a movie that doesn’t take itself too seriously and does not try to portray reality. Mark Wahlberg is perfectly cast as Chris Cole and Jennifer Anniston gives a very pleasing and likeable performance as Chris’s loyal girlfriend, whilst some of the supporting turns (particularly from Timothy Spall as the seen it all before manager) are excellent too. Stephen Herek’s direction is perfectly paced and unlike most modern movies it is not overlong and it feels shorter than it actually is. It has some truly excellent moments and you could do much worse than to check this out on a Saturday night.

For what it’s worth, “Rock Star” is an enjoyable fantasy yarn about an aspiring musician who makes it to the big time, only to realize that it’s not all about sex, drugs, and rock-and-roll. Sure, the concept is surely not fresh, and the lack of purpose that plagues the movie keeps it from truly soaring. But despite its flaws, it manages to entertain through its bright cast, wonderful execution, and delightful sense of humor.

Carrying the lightweight story on his shoulders like a guitar case full of memories is young Chris Cole (Mark Wahlberg), a twenty-something grunge rocker who still lives with his parents, and gets his jollies by recreating the sense of excitement an audience gets from attending a Steel Dragon concert. Insisting that his band is a “tribute band” rather than a cover band, Chris idolizes the band, particularly the lead singer, Bobby Beers, whom he looks, sounds, and acts like on stage.

With the support of his mother and father, as well as his longtime girlfriend Emily (Jennifer Aniston), Chris finds comfort in his fanaticism, perhaps too much comfort. His drive to recreate each song specifically and correctly makes him overbearing in the eyes of his band members, who, after an on-stage brawl, decide it’s time for Chris to walk.

In any other movie, this would be the complete story, ending with reflections by each of the characters on how their experiences together shaped the rest of their lives. But in the world of “Rock Star,” this is only the beginning. Just when Chris begins to give up his dreams, he gets a call from none other than Kirk Cuddy, one of Steel Dragon’s guitarists, offering him a chance to audition as the new lead singer. He heartily accepts, flies out with Emily to meet the band and begins to get into the life of a rock star, all the while paying little notice to his past life, which slips away more and more each day.

This cautionary turn of events that begin to cloud the jubilance of Chris’s lifestyle is a well-known tactic used by many other films that bear the routine grass-isn’t-always-greener-on-the-other-side warning. The film shows us both the glamour and the depression of this lifestyle, from the excessive drinking and parties where Chris is surrounded by adoring female fans, to a scene in which Emily is told by the wife of another band member that since Chris is a rock star, “the normal rules don’t apply.” At times, however, I got the feeling that the movie is warning against the rock-and-roll way of life it has been embracing all along.

So what is the film’s position? Neither, really; its inability to take a stand for or against this lifestyle is bothersome only if you allow it to be. If you can put this inconsistency aside, you’ll find that there’s a whole lot of fun to be had with the movie. Some impressive work is done in creating a fictional 80’s rock band, complete with long, tossed hair and mascara during performances, screaming guitars and singing that resembles a screeching tire. It may not be as authentic a recreation as, say, the era of “Almost Famous,” but it gets the job done with fashionable results.

Mark Wahlberg has always been a versatile actor, and proves his worth with this role. As Chris, he manages to convincingly segue from a controlling perfectionist obsessed with precisely recreating Steel Dragon, to a legend at the top of his game and the bottom of his personal life. It’s nothing stellar, but he carries it so well, with all the brazen charm of an 80’s rock idol/sex symbol. Of the band members, Timothy Spall’s character is the most memorable, a humorous mix of wit and longing for the stability of his past. Jennifer Aniston practically steals every scene she walks through, crossing moments of real emotion with some of the film’s funniest one-liners. At one point, a groupie begins talking about G-strings gaining more respect for exotic dancers, to which Aniston replies, “Nothing says ‘respect’ like cramming a strip of Lycra right up your a–.”

There’s an air of familiarity that hangs over the movie that is hard to ignore, but what keeps it from becoming too formulaic are its wonderful cast, its comedic wit, and its interesting premise. There’s nothing totally hardcore about it, but it hardly matters, since we already know this is going to be an uplifting movie rather than a downbeat adventure of self-discovery. As a cautionary fantasy, “Rock Star” is too routine to remain with one for long, but while you’re there, it’s quite an experience.

No doubt at all that, ‘Coming to America,’ is one of Eddie Murphy’s finest movies of all. A true comedy classic, this film will have you rolling from start to finish at the zany characters and performance throughout.

The DVD itself, on the other hand, leaves much to be desired. As far as extras go the only ammenity offered is 1 lousy trailer. Also, the video transfer itself is far from pristine and the Dolby 5.1 audio track sounds like it could still be sweetend up. Sure, i suppose the fact that this DVD was authored back in 1999 may explain why the disc comes across as a bit primitive in terms of bells and whistles, but with that being said, it’s high time for a proper re-release to do this comedy classic some audio-visual justice!

This is one of my all time-favorite African-American movies. First of all, Eddie Murphy is hilarious (in all of his roles). Arsenio Hall is a perfect foil for Eddie’s hijinks. Eddie let his full range of talent show in this film; he played an innocent person who grows into a mature adult right in front of our eyes and realizes that there is a price to pay for love; whether or not you are born into royalty. This is one of those movies that a person watches over and over again and ends up reciting the lines as the movies is playing. James Earl Jones and Madge Sinclair are wonderful in this movie as well as the King and Queen. Madge Sinclair was one of the world’s best actresses and I miss her greatly. She tells James Earl Jones “put a sock in it, Geoffrey, the boy is in love.” Nobody can deliver that line to a black king, except a black queen. John Amos, (whom I have loved since Good Times), is a great actor as well. He plays the part of a black businessman so well, and as a father he takes no stuff off of the King. He tells James Earl Jones, “I will break my foot off in your royal _____); now that’s a ghetto father for you. James Earl Jones knew where to draw the line with Cleo McDowell.

I also like the fact that the Kingdom of Zamunda was filled with kindness, and the people were happy, the royal family was truly wealthy and had everything. You know, this movie is truly a fantasy and helps us escape from our everyday lives. Just to see the Queen and King eating breakfast and talking to their son on a “speaker phone” because the table is so long, is funny. The King and Queen taking their entourage to Queens when they received the telegram to send $1 million to Semmi who had spent up all his pocket change is one of my favorite scenes. That music that is playing during the sequence when the entourage arrives in Queens is so wonderful, moving and swirling, I am buying the soundtrack just to get that song. When I get married, I would like that song to play as my “court” walks down the aisle before me.

All the cameos in this movie are great as well. Nobody can play a doped-up thug like Samuel L. Jackson; Samuel is a natural at playing a killer. Also, Louie Anderson was funny, so was Eriq LaSalle, and Alison Dean.

Now the guys in the barbershop have to be taken from classic characters in the black community. In all the black neighborhoods I have been in during my whole life; there has got to be a black barbershop full of men eating, talking stuff, and cutting hair. When “Clarence” says that Martin Luther King, Jr. ran up to him and hit him in the chest, I just crack up, cause Martin Luther King, Jr. was a prophet of non-violence. And, Eddie Murphy playing a white man is too funny, and a Jewish white man on top of that. Now, that takes creativity; and comic genuis, and Eddie’s got it. And, Arsenio’s portrayal of Rev. Brown is right on target, there is always some country preacher in the neighborhood that comes to every event, eats up the food, and blesses the weddings, blesses the children, and buries the dead.

One of my favorite parts is when Lisa tells Prince Akeem, she cannot marry him; because he lied to her about his identity. That made Akeem grow up very fast, and learn that nobody; no matter who he is, can buy love.

The clothes in this movie are also wonderful. Deborah Nadoolman did a great job showing how royalty would dress in a foreign country where it is warm, Also, how they would dress in Queens during the winter; those fur coats Madge Sinclair had on were fantastic and so were the suits worn by the King himself. His coat of an entire lion’s skin was dramatic and the diamond eyes on that lion’s head were cool.

The ending this cinderella story was great, love did really win out in the end.

Well, I could go on and on about how much I liked this movie but, I am going to stop now. Get this movie and keep it in your video collection so you can watch it and laugh over and over.

One of Truffaut’s and Deneuve’s best pictures. It has warmth, history, a sense of the absurd, excellent pacing, and a bit of suspense. It’s also has more a linear storyline then many French films. All of the performances are excellent.
Two Warnings:
1. Avoid dubbed versions (Deneuve’s sense of humor is in her voice, not on her face, resulting in a mirthless character when dubbed).
2. The new Fox version changed the sub-titles and wrecked some of the best lines.

I was first drawn to this film when I read a news article that this film had been considered by many French critics to be the best French film of the 80’s. I couldn’t have agreed more with that judgment when I saw it. Truffaut goes beyond telling a story of love and tragedy in Nazi-occupied France, it shows how intensely he feels about art and theater and how inseparable they are from human life. Theater is a big part in the lives of the central characters and hence a key ingredient of this film as well. Truffaut uses that fictional theater and interweaves that with real lives so seamlessly that it sometimes blows your mind away. I think in many ways it is an extension of ‘Day for Night’. A terrific achievement, to say the least.

This is the last entry in a five volume set collecting all 52 episodes of the 1960s Speed Racer. This series has a very self-contained air, with a beginning, a middle and an end. It begins with Speed’s first professional race and ends when he becomes world champion. With all the episodes now available to fans on DVD, we can evaluate the series as a whole. And I am forced to the conclusion that while the beginning and the end rock, the middle fairly sucks.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Speed Racer, Vol. 5! Click Here

As the series progressed I suspect the creators began to run out of money because episode quality dropped immensely. Most of the truly excellent eps, “The Great Plan”, “Challenge of the Masked Racer”, “The Race Against the Mammoth Car”, “The Most Dangerous Race”, “The Fire Race” and “The Fastest Car on Earth” are two-parters (or in the case of “The Most Dangerous Race” the show’s only three-parter) clustered in the series’ early days; they’re all on Volumes 1 and 2 of the set. Toward the middle/end (the stuff on Volumes 3 and 4) we get a bunch of single ep stories with artwork, scripting, and even the amount of animation all noticably inferior to earlier efforts.

Which brings us to Volume 5 (the last eight eps). Episode quality on this DVD varies wildly, containing both Speed’s absolute worst adventure and one of his very best. Other eps range from mediocre to good, with, thankfully, rather more of the latter.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Speed Racer, Vol. 5! Click Here

I’ve always had a weak spot for “The Great Car Wrestling Match” (Episode #45). True, its animation is limited, but the artwork is good, and the storyline amazingly strong. If I may be allowed to seemingly digress for a moment: one reason so many fans love “The Race Against the Mammoth Car” I feel is that it’s one of the few times in the series Speed uses the Mach 5 offensively against another vehicle. When Speed breaks out the saw blades and starts slicing tires off the Mammoth Car that just flat DOES it for people. For “The Great Car Wrestling Match” they came up with the absolutely deranged idea of having Speed enter the Mach 5 in a demolition derby. This episode gives us what we love most about “Mammoth Car” – the Mach 5 in car-on-car battle – only instead of a few brief moments within a larger storyline, it’s the focus of the entire ep. Thus Speed uses every trick he can pull out of that fantastic car to trash about fifty-seven million other vehicles AND one of his opponents has a highly tricked-out car of his own with a built-in arsenal of weaponry specifically designed to kill the Mach 5.

Ah, good stuff.

I despise “Motorcycle Apaches” (#46). To my mind it’s the single worst ep. Speed and the gang look really, really stupid wearing cowboy hats. The characterization of the Apaches is more than a little racist. “Ugh!” indeed. Don’t all “Indians” talk that way? Then we have Speed’s comments, courtesy of Japanese writers, on what a horrible, selfish thing it is that the Apaches have a problem with their land being used, without their permission, for a facility to build better and more powerful nuclear bombs. This struck me, even as a kid, as self-righteous tripe propounded by outsiders who didn’t know what the hell they were talking about.

“Car With a Brain” and “Junk Car Grand Prix” (#s 47 & 48) are forgettable examples of the aforementioned inferior writing, artwork and animation.

“The Car in the Sky” (#49) is decent. “The Trick Race” (#50) features the return of the Car Acrobatic Team from “The Most Dangerous Race” and co-stars Racer X, always a good thing. “The Trick Race” relies heavily on footage from earlier episodes, chiefly “The Most Dangerous Race”. Even some of the events happening within the storyline use footage cribbed from other eps. Whenever new footage is intercut with old, the wide disparity in quality of animation (often none at all as characters talk without moving their mouths) and artwork is evident. “The Trick Race” is a pristine example of talented creators turning necessity into virtue; because they had very little money to produce the ep, about half of it is stitched together from previously existent footage. Amazingly, with an ingenious script, “The Trick Race” works, and works well. What happens between Racer X and Speed at the end of the ep has to be seen to be believed. It’s genuinely moving and was picked by TV Guide as one of the most memorable moments in television history.

Then there’s the series finale, the two-part “Race Around the World” (#s 51 & 52). Obviously the creators wanted to end the series on an up note. None of that weinie single episode stuff, Speed Racer needed to end with a two-parter, and it needed to be great! It was, due to an amazingly inventive script combined with some of the series’ best artwork and animation. Speed competes in the Around-the-World Grand Prix requiring him to pilot a Formula 1 car, rocket powered raceboat, airboat, biplane, raft, submarine, snow tractor, ice yacht, truck, motorcycle, kayak – and of course he finishes in the Mach 5 – all while nature and two other racing teams pull every dirty trick they can think of to knock him out of the running. In the final ep, Racer X shows up one last time. Really, they should have called this adventure “Everything But the Kitchen Sink”. For my money “The Most Dangerous Race” will always be the best Speed Racer, but “Race Around the World” is in a strong 2nd place, a fine and worthy send-off for our hero.

Looking over the entirety of this five-volume collection, here’s my advice to Speed Racer fans. If you want to enjoy the series’ worthwhile eps, you should buy Volumes 1 and 2. Volumes 3 and 4 are for completists only. However you NEED Volume 5 for “Race Around the World”. Speed Racer may have gotten a bit soft around the middle, but it ended rock hard.

Of all five DVD sets, this is the best set to own. No, I didn’t see any special features, but it’s well worth the price for the last three episodes in the series.

In “The Trick Race” Speed once again races the Car Acrobatic Team. But that’s not what made this cartoon episode one of TV Guide’s most memorable 50 programs. If you don’t know why, watch the episode and pay attention to the ending.

“Race Around the World” Parts I and II are the last of the original Speed Racer episodes. From the very beginning of the series Speed wanted to become the greatest racing car driver in the world. Find out if he can accomplish his goal while being an honorable man. Excellent way to wrap the series!

If you are new to the Speed Racer series, you will probably want to pick up the first DVD set too. “The Great Plan” and “Challenge of the Masked Racer” (the first four episodes, two parts each) pretty much set up the rest of the series and explain all the special features of the Mach 5.

This was my favorite cartoon series when I was growing up. I couldn’t wait to get home from school to watch the next thrilling episode of Speed Racer. I hope you enjoy it as well!

The heated debate surrounding any mention of 9/11 truth in the mainstream media will almost certainly prevent this documentary from getting the attention it deserves. LOOSE CHANGE 9/11: AN AMERICAN COUP is the fourth in the series, and related to the first three only through subject matter and the repetition of some very brief scenes featured in LOOSE CHANGE FINAL CUT.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Loose Change 9/11: An American Coup! Click Here

As most people should be aware by this point, the LOOSE CHANGE series focuses on inconsistencies in the official story of 9/11. The presence of such inconsistencies should be self-evident enough for anyone who cares to briefly look, but the reluctance of both government and mainstream media to `go there’ requires people outside those fields to present the evidence themselves. (Hence, books on 9/11 by David Ray Griffin, Peter Dale Scott, Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed and Webster Tarpley, and films such as TERRORSTORM, 9/11 PRESS FOR TRUTH and the LOOSE CHANGE movies.) Before covering this most recent installment, I’ll suggest up front that newcomers to these films, or to the notion of the official story of 9/11 not reflecting the full truth of the events of that day, should make a strong effort to catch the third (LOOSE CHANGE FINAL CUT) and fourth (AMERICAN COUP) entries. These are the most polished, well-researched, satisfying and useful films from the ongoing series.

AN AMERICAN COUP takes a broad view of the events of 9/11, and places them within a continuum of incidents from recent history that display the clever duplicity of governments – or determined elements within them – to get what they want politically, absent any notion of democratic approval from an openly informed general public. We see well-presented overviews of the Reichstag fire, Pearl Harbor, and other vital historical incidents, some presented in more detail than others. This entire section, as well done as it is, is nonetheless completed within the first dozen minutes of the movie. (The film even makes mention here of the Kennedy assassination, conveying a good deal in just a handful of shots, and ending with a particularly telling montage).

Buy,Download, Or Stream Loose Change 9/11: An American Coup! Click Here

The events of 9/11 make up the body of the movie, and LOOSE CHANGE: AN AMERICAN COUP enters the front rank of all films that honestly address the events of that day. I have now personally watched a dozen or so films investigating 9/11, and digested a greater number of lectures and presentations covering the same topic, while simultaneously plowing through something like 20 or more related books. (This is a mundane fact, as I suspect a majority of people involved in 9/11 truth have done exactly the same thing). AN AMERICAN COUP conveys the sensation of building on that entire body of investigative research, paying careful attention to all the disparate facts and the overall narrative conveyed, then assembling them judiciously to offer the clearest possible overview and message to viewers. Many of the above books and films on 9/11 have conveyed the gravity of the event, and the importance of sharing this information with others, with a tremendous emotional impact. This new LOOSE CHANGE film offers the same potent message, but with an increased strength and clarity that stand out from those that came before. It’s a blisteringly powerful movie. The previous LOOSE CHANGE FINAL CUT has remained a favorite of mine for its ability to convey useful information about 9/11 in an effective and energizing manner. LOOSE CHANGE 9/11: AN AMERICAN COUP is a more forceful experience that covers a similar breadth of material in a noticeably more polished way. It will evoke strong reactions from anyone who watches it.

The film provides an analysis of war-games taking place on the day, concurrent with the various attacks. This overview contains some extra details on the events that I hadn’t fully understood before, and the additional information makes a big difference, clarifying the apparent methods used by covert figures within the government to distort the American military response to the hijackings. (These details had appeared earlier in Michael Ruppert’s CROSSING THE RUBICON, but this is the first time I’ve seen them presented quite so clearly, with accompanying audio and video evidence).

The narrative of events shown post-9/11 includes the various contradictory appearances and messages made by Osama Bin Laden, who initially denied involvement in the 9/11 attacks, then (if the Bush administration and their fortuitously located, perfectly timed smoking-gun tapes could be believed), reversed his earlier comments and took credit for them after all. A thorough analysis of the overall unlikelihood of Bin Laden’s `confessions of guilt’ can be found in David Ray Griffin’s recent `OSAMA BIN LADEN: DEAD OR ALIVE?’. AN AMERICAN COUP makes the same points through the juxtaposition of different images featuring Bin Laden – and not the two or three pictures you’ve probably seen used to present this argument elsewhere. This sequence is quite well done.

The film covers the collapse of WTC7, and revisits important testimony made by witness Barry Jennings. Some of this has previously appeared in the excellent FABLED ENEMIES documentary, but we see here some extra moments, and then the upsetting epilogue to the story. The latter includes a full screen shot of an email sent to the filmmakers by a private detective, who suggests to them that some doors are best left unopened. Aspects of this story are left unspoken, others only hinted at, but viewers will have enough information at this point to reach some definite conclusions.

AN AMERICAN COUP benefits from having the production resources to do what it wants. At one point, the narration discusses events in New York, and we see perfectly realized CG recreations of the Manhattan landscape from the day of 9/11, carefully detailed down to hundreds of individual buildings. The sound design of the film is also superlative, with some explosive moments hitting home very hard, and appropriately so. There are numerous moments like this, not dwelt on in a showy manner, but all simply used to make a particular point with clarity before moving ahead.

The film is exceptionally well made, and strongly narrated by Daniel Sunjata. It’s an important movie, and one that I highly recommend people watch. For anyone with an even halfway open mind, it should prove to be an emotionally overwhelming experience. In the light of the decade of horror resulting from the disaster of 9/11, its existence provides evidence to me of two notions. First, that truth maintains its own energy, continually grows in force and effect, and cannot be easily extinguished. Secondly, that deception rests on flimsy foundations, is supported only through increasing amounts of desperation and bluster, and will ultimately wither away in full view. Don’t miss LOOSE CHANGE 9/11: AN AMERICAN COUP.

It has been nearly 50 yrs. since the first Kennedy assassination and we still don’t know the truth. There are people who do know the truth, but we little people don’t have that knowledge. In my lifetime the truth will not be revealed. 9-11 is just less than 10 yrs. old and the questions are as tall as Mt. Everest. No, we will never know the truth about that morning either. It’s the little things that confuse me. How was it possible that one of the tallest bldgs. in the world was reduced to dust and yet the passport of one of the ‘hijackers’ was found in the rubble intact? How was a special ring (very tiny) owned by Tony Perkin’s widow found when her body was not? She was on one of the planes that hit the WTC. Lights, plants, rugs, bathroom fixtures, furniture, computers, TVs, radios, heavy restaurant equipment, marble, staircases, elevators, and over 3,000 people all reduced to nothing, but items like this were spared.

They (and ‘they’know who they are), are never going to give us the information that will put them behind bars for the rest of their lives. This event was planned for years behind the backs of many world government officials, including many of our own. The thing about films like this (including Michael Moore’s films) is that they are well thought out, well produced, well presented, and quite believable. We leave the theatre in tears or in total frustration because we have the knowledge but can’t do a d— thing about it!

I have a theory about the puffs of smoke shown in the films as the buildings collapse onto the street. Could that come from the air that is rushing down from the above floors and blows out the windows with all its strength? It doesn’t have to be a bomb being detonated. It makes sense that with all of that tonage falling so quickly the air would be like a hurricane coming down floor-by-floor. Of course it is going to blow out windows and create dust that looks like smoke. Just my take on things. You probably don’t agree.

The fact that one of the two men who managed to escape Tower 7 just before it blew died within days of the ‘paper’ on the cause of the collapse strikes me very sad and very convenient. His commentary made me shiver. And that was before I learned he had died.

Someone could spend their entire life studying every frame of film footage available and not be able to solve this riddle. I am sure there are people who are currently doing this. No, those weren’t government planes. No, there weren’t missiles attached to the under carriage of the planes. If these flights (Shanksville) did not exist what happened to all the people on those flights? If a plane crashing into the Pentagon would have made a far bigger hole than it did, and it wasn’t a plane, then what happened to the people on that flight?

I would prefer people studying this event and documenting it choose things they can prove rather than speculate on. It just clouds the water. If I was somehow responsible for 9-11 I would make sure so many documentaries are made that everyone ends up more confused than the day it happened. I am sure there are people behind some of these ‘theories’ that are doing just that.

Why are we Americans afraid to know the truth about 9-11? Why do we buy or rent documentaries like Loose Change and then do nothing? I can’t get my Congressman’s office to discuss anything mundane, muchless something like 9-11 theories. I am sure all of you who are posting are as frustrated as I am. We have Michael Moore and Mr. Avery showing us the truth, and we cannot do anything about it. Talk about frustrating!

I still, to this day, want to know the truth about the two French brothers who caught the first plane crashing into the WTC. Why did they come to NYC to do a documentary about rookie Firemen!?! That seems absurd. Who were they going to sell the film to? Who gave them total access to the inside workings of the WTC on that fateful morning? They were allowed to follow everyone around and film when our own network and cable news photographers were held at bay blocks away. Who are these men, and what ties do they have to other countries besides France? And they both survived the collapse of both World Trade Center buildings! Amazing! If I have any real questions, my questions are about those two men and their real motives that day.

You can watch this DVD over and over and each time learn something new. What you can’t do is take this information and act on it. Too many people have made millions off the event and continue to make money from it. The list of names is too long to mention here. Just read NYC newspapers on a daily basis and the men are usually front page news.

As I said at the beginning, in my lifetime I will never know the truth about the assassinations of President John Kennedy, Senator Robert Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and the World Trade Center attacks. Maybe I shouldn’t watch theory films any more.

Shot in colour and released in 1957, “The Curse of Frankenstein” is, of course, the film that made Hammer Films a household name for horror/thriller movie fans all over the world. To fully appreciate the importance and impact of “Curse”, you have to look at it in the context of the time when it was made. By the mid-fifties, horror films had long passed their peak in Hollywood–certainly in terms of quality. Black and white “quickies”, with almost no budget, were being churned out for teenagers to watch at the drive-in ( at least, those who were watching the screen ! ) Shlock-masters like Roger Corman and Bert Gordon were turning out “masterpieces” like “The Wasp Woman” and “The Amazing Colossal Man”.

Suddenly, we have a small studio in England, making a horror film with excellent production values, gorgeously creepy sets, fine costumes, professional actors and a talented director, Terence Fisher. At the same time, along with a classy look, you add liberal amounts of gore ( certainly by 1950s standards ), and a couple of voluptuous “damsels in distress” who can scream lustily when they encounter the monster. It was a winning formula that Hammer would raise to an art form.

Peter Cushing plays Baron Von Frankenstein, and his terrific performance dominates the film. His character goes through quite a transformation from curious scientist to an obsessive fiend, determined to “create life” at, literally, any cost. His mentor/friend Paul Krempe ( Robert Urquhart )is an enthusiastic assistant at first, but soon becomes alienated by the Baron’s frantic and ultimately murderous behaviour. Sometimes body parts are easily available–sometimes you have to be “creative” in obtaining them !

Of course, this flesh and blood “jigsaw puzzle” comes to life in the form of a hideous, pathetic creature played by Christopher Lee, who soon breaks loose, displaying no appreciation whatsoever for being “born” ! As I mentioned earlier, two beautiful women “round out” the cast. Gorgeous Hazel Court is Elizabeth, the Baron’s betrothed, and Valerie Gaunt is Justine the maid. Justine is, as they say in England, the Baron’s “bit on the side”–when she threatens to spill all the Baron’s secrets unless he marries her, you just know that her future is “cloudy”.

“Curse” may not be Hammer’s best film, but it put the studio on the map and started an enduring partnership of two very fine actors–Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee.

The DVD exhibits good colour, with occasional haziness and mono sound. The extras are sparse–a few notes on other Hammer films, and a trailer. I would have loved some comments from Mr. Lee–sadly Peter Cushing passed away some time ago.

Still, if you like classic horror films, “Curse” has to be in your collection–its importance cannot be over-estimated. Recommended.

A very sad footnote, dated 30 April 2008. Ms. Hazel Court has passed away at age 82. She was most famous for her roles in horror/suspense films produced by the Hammer Studios and also Roger Corman. A talented actress, she always brought glamour and a touch of class to any production she was involved in.

I’ve got to thank Warner Bros. for finally coming out with “The Curse of Frankenstein” on DVD. And where as I was a bit suspect of the quality of the film element used for the “Horror of Dracula” DVD released on the same date as “Curse”, I have no complaints at all about the quality of this film’s presentation by Warner.

It is beautiful. And apparently Warner used a very fine quality source print for this release. The colors are lovely, and the widescreen presentation is satisfying. As a great admirer of Hammer films, it is exciting to finally see this beautifully photographed film as it was seen on the big screen in 1958.

The story is much closer to Mary Shelley’s original novel, though the creature, here played by Christopher Lee, is much like the one portrayed by Karloff; large, horrifying to look at, and almost an “idiot” in intellectual capacity, but somehow tugging at our sympathies. But he is more frightening to behold in this film, with his ghastly white complexion, and bizarre, searching eyes. As the film progresses, he becomes even harder to behold as he is ravaged by the terrifying encounters that make up his sad, short existence.

And Peter Cushing is astonishing in his portrayal of Baron Victor Frankenstein. He is a single-minded, driven scientist. Both brilliant intellectually, and uncompromising in vision. And yet, he is also not exactly evil, though his actions are, as is seen clearly by the murdering of his one-time lover and maid, Justine, as you see both determination and regret reflected in his expressions, while he listens to her screams.

It’s easy to see why, when viewing both “Horror of Dracula” and “Curse of Frankenstein”, these two films made Cushing and Lee international stars and horror icons. Both films have come to represent all that made Hammer Sudios great in their glory days, with lavish period sets, beautiful color photography, and music scores that rivalled bigger budget Hollywood films.

The DVD itself holds no extras of worthwhile mention. The facts presented in the small section called “The Making of a Monster” are nothing that any entry level Hammer film follower would not know already. It’s a shame that Christopher Lee couldn’t be encouraged into doing a commentary, or a short interview on the film’s history and its influence on modern horror. That may not be Warner Bros. fault, as we all know, Lee has been very busy of late on the big screen, and keeps very busy off of screen.

Both “Curse of Frankenstein” and “The Horror of Dracula” DVDs are a must for Hammer film lovers. Hopefully, if sales are good, Warner will release the other Hammer films they hold license to, such as “Taste the Blood of Dracula” and “Dracula Has Risen from the Grave”.

When a little orphan girl falls into the hands of Madame Medusa and sends a message in a bottle, the Rescue Aid Society answers in the form of Bernard (Bob Newhart) and Miss Bianca (Eva Gabor). What can two mice possible do to help the little girl? It turns out they can do a lot.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Rescuers! Click Here

The movie starts on a reasonably funny note, as the rodent duo hop aboard an albatross to head for the swamps. Albatrosses are incredibly aerodynamic, but they are less then stellar at takeoffs and landings, and Orville the Albatross (Jim Jordan) proves no more adept than his brethren. After a plummet off a building that thrills Miss Bianca and petrifies Bernard, the journey has begun.

In the swamps the duo marshals the other animals to take on Madame Medusa (Geraldine Page), who needs the little orphan Penny (Michelle Stacy) to fit into a hole that leads to a cave. In the cave is located a quantity of jewels, but Madame Medusa is interested only in a huge diamond called the Devil’s Eye. The Rescue Society mice and their swampland friends must overcome Madame Medusa and her aids Mr. Snoops (Joe Flynn) and a pair of alligators, who also frequently play babysitter to Penny.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Rescuers! Click Here

Madame Medusa never realizes that the mice and swamp animals are trying to rescue Penny, which makes this movie more interesting to watch. As happens with many such movies, Madame Medusa’s henchmen are cerebrally challenged and the animals are able to plan around them.

The ending of the movie contains a few surprises, and I found the end interesting. This movie also nicely sets up the excellent sequel “The Rescuers Down Under.”

The real star of this clever movie is Eva Gabor. Bob Newhart gets top billing, but Eva was perfect for her role and seems to get the best lines in the movie. She is clever, funny and fearless as compared to Bernard’s timid character. Only when Miss Bianca is in trouble does Bernard seem to rise to some measure of courage. There were a variety of other notable characters. Evinrude (James MacDonald) the dragonfly was cute and funny. George Lindsey was classic as Deadeye the Rabbit. Other supporting characters gave this movie depth and interest.

The art of this movie is also unusual in that the artist drew some of the characters in a rough style. I am unsure of the reason, but I found the art style to initially be distracting. I eventually became accustomed to the style and no longer noticed it as the movie went on. The music was also notable. A song from this movie was nominated for an Academy Award.

This movie is clever and funny. In places the movie is tense and suspenseful. There are a few places where the alligators are a little bit scary, but I believe this movie should be suitable for all family members in line with the movie’s G rating. I would recommend this movie for any collection of family-oriented movies and for those who collect animated movies. Most families will want to see this movie more than once.

The Rescuers is Disney’s most underrated work! It was the last great feature film before what became a strings of forgettable works like The Black Cauldron, The Great Detective, Oliver and Company in which the Disney studio was trying to break into new ground but somehow was unable to find the right formula. It wasn’t until The Little Mermaid that Disney Studio has reclaimed it’s number one position as the world’s greatest cartoon creator.Having said that, The Rescuers Down Under- produced after The Little Mermaid – is a thorough disappointment, both in its story and in its style of drawing. This always seems to be the curse of sequels! The Rescuers, however, has all of the Disney’s magic! Medusa is possibly one of the greatest of Disney’s villains, yet somehow she doesn’t catch on as did the others.T he only criticism I would make is the opening of The Rescuers. It seemed that the studio had run out of money when they were doing the opening scene, for all we have is a collage of storybook sketches from an artist’s impression.

Nana Suzuki is heading toward her final year of middle school. She has eyes for fellow student Yuichi, but can’t even muster up enough courage to walk up to him. Then, one of Nana’s grandfather’s inventions splits Nana into seven Nana’s. Now there’s Nana and six more who each represent one of Nana’s emotions outright. The Nana’s decide the only way for Nana to find happiness with Yuichi is to go to the same high school as he chooses, even though Yuichi is a top student and Nana is at the lower end of the ladder. With a happy Nana, a crybaby Nana, a smart Nana, an aggressive Nana, a slowpoke Nana, and a Nana who’s a bit weird, Nana’s study habits and love life get out of control!

“Seven of Seven” (so named because “Nana” in Japanese means “Seven”, and there are seven of Nana) spans 25 episodes (and one bonus episode). The plot holds well, but the focus of the story is on the characters. Each episode teaches valuable lessons, which the Nana’s themselves take to heart to improve who they are.

While Nana struggles with her feelings for Yuichi, there’s no over-sappy love drama overtaking each episode. Although the Nana’s in time don “Nana Ranger” super hero costumes, and gain marvelous abilities from prisms which split into seven with Nana, there are no grand battles going on for episode after episode. There may be strong emotions, there may be a couple of fights, but in the end it’s all about the development and growth of the characters, especially Nana and her studying. Episodes on the first DVD may be a bit slow to grab a viewer’s attention, but stick with it, and by the second DVD you’ll find the development of the characters and plot are well paced. With this steady pacing throughout the series, “Seven of Seven” leads up to two emotional climaxes in the plot: one mid-way through the series, and the other at the end.

There’s no unacceptable content for viewing by children* in “Seven of Seven”, outside of minor drinking by a couple of adults well over forty years old. On the other hand, the lessons learned about life and studying could surely rub off well on a child who’s in middle or high school, and will eventually face mid-terms and final tests. “Seven of Seven” won’t be a cure-all for a studying student, but it makes for something to watch while breaking from the books.

* The bonus episode does contain objectional visual content probably for viewers under 14. The series may be fully watched without viewing this mostly-nonsense episode which has no impact on the storyline.

The voice acting in the English dub is well done, on a level comparable with the original Japanese. Veronica Taylor did an outstanding job voicing distinct and proper voices for each of the seven Nana’s (whereas the Japanese version uses seven different voice actresses).

I have found only a few minor failings in the English version. At at least one point, the English version’s dialogue was changed from the original Japanese in a way which rendered it inaccurate for what was intended to be said, leading to it being contradicted later in the series. Other changes were introduced whenever there was English dialogue in the Japanese version. Such scenes are hard to translate into English, and I commend the dubbers for the job they did. Then there was episode six, which during a classroom scene almost halfway into the episode, it sounds as if the voice actors stood across the room, their voices distant and slightly echoing. This is unacceptable to me, and if it’s on all copies of the DVD, it should have been fixed before releasing the complete series DVD pack.

With emotion-provoking twists and turns in the plot, and a large cast of interesting and lovable characters, “Seven of Seven” stands out as a series for viewers looking for a character-based, no matter their age, and the bright colors and cheerful settings should hold the attention of the kids, as well.

I was initially unsure about the series, a little reluctant about purchasing it, but I’m glad I bought it. “Seven of Seven” is a more than welcome addition to my small-but-growing anime collection, and is certainly a five-star series.

First of all this is a great anime for those of you who want to take break from the very mature animes with all the cussing, gore, and other content. The story is great, very shocking and good morals to think about. My mom loved it and, she hardly ever sees any anime her type, and even my little sister, who is three. One of the reasons why I bought this was because of a preview I saw. I liked the fact that they could turn into super heroes some how and it looked kind of interesting. Oh and they were even nice enough to include a bonus show where everything goes crazy. This was most likly cut out from the rest of the episodes because of its fanservice ^-^’. Other than that bonus episode the whole series is pretty wholesome for even kids to watch. Over all its funny, has suprising action at times, and makes you want to cheer Nana on,the main character, with her mission to pass the exams and end up in the same high school as her crush, even if she gets distacted at times with her six other selves.

October 19 brings a promising release of Wacky Races, the series where many different characters compete in races in their custom cars. Sadly I dont think Cartoon Network plays these shows anymore so many kids may not know what this is. Adults will remember it though and it certainly is a show the entire family can enjoy. The characters:

Penelope Pitstop in the Compact Pussycat

The show follows a similar pattern: Dick Dastardly and Mutley cheat every way they can to win but never do, and Muttley always laughs about it. Different riders would win on each episode, often with dilemmas within the race (mostly caused by Dick Dastardly/Muttley). It is a simple but fun show that I loved watching and I am glad we are getting the complete series of 34 episodes on dvd. There look to be good extras included on here, and each episode has been remastered to look better than ever before. Amazon’s price of $[...] is a steal for what you get so I encourage fans of 60s/70s animation as well as first-time fans to pick this bargain up. It is fun for the whole family, old or young. Hope this convinces you to buy this set, it looks to be a great release of some classic animation from the 60’s and 70’s.

The Wacky Racers ride again on this 3-disc set, the first in a classic Hanna-Barbera triptych consisting of WACKY RACES, DASTARDLY AND MUTTLEY IN THEIR FLYING MACHINES and THE PERILS OF PENELOPE PITSTOP.

At the time of this show’s release upon the airwaves, Hanna-Barbera had come under fire from worried parents for the violence present in their adventure programs such as SPACE GHOST, BIRDMAN AND THE GALAXY TRIO, FRANKENSTEIN JR. AND THE IMPOSSIBLES, and THE HERCULOIDS. (Incidentally, we’re still waiting for proper releases of these on DVD, Warner Brothers. Ahem.) HB responded with this series, which not only returned them to wild slapstick comedy as featured in YOGI BEAR and HUCKLEBERRY HOUND, but gave them their first recurring cartoon villains: the ignoble, treacherous, completely inefficient Dick Dastardly and his wheezing, snickering canine sidekick Muttley.

The plot of each episode is simple: eleven cars, each one a distinctly and fantastically customized vehicle (see other reviews for the complete lineup) compete in car races throughout North America for the title of The World’s Wackiest Racer. The rules seem to be highly flexible: each car has certain attributes that allow its owner(s) to gain the advantage from time to time, often in ways that would be considered unsporting in a real-life car race. Despite this, Dick Dastardly and Muttley (voiced by Paul Winchell and Don Messick) still spend most of each race trying to win through extremely elaborate and badly-planned booby-traps (sometimes contributing heartily to their own demise: in the very first episode, D.D. has the race in the bag until the narrator (Dave Willock) mentions “photo finish” at which point Dastardly stops at mere INCHES from the finish line to pose for a photo).

Where the plot thickens is in the diverse range of cars and racers: though Dastardly, Muttley and Penelope Pitstop were the obvious breakout stars, this is Hanna-Barbera’s largest ensemble cast (23 characters!), scoping a wide range of personalities; nutty inventor Pat Pending; hyperenthusiastic Rufus Ruffcut and his pet beaver Sawtooth; the incoherent cavemen Slag Brothers (Rock and Gravel); laid-back hillbilly Lazy Luke and his fretful pet Blubber Bear, and the ubitiquous Ant-Hill Mob, to name but a few. The cars, all tailor-made to their racers, are excellently designed and the source of numerous gags: the Gruesome Twosome and their Creepy Coupe’s “dragon power” with real dragon; the Compact Pussycat, which dispenses full salon conveniences to its owner Penelope Pitstop; and the Red Max’s Crimson Haybailer, both car AND aeroplane in one. There’s even a bit of irony: bumbling Peter Perfect’s Turbo Terrific falls apart constantly, while Dick Dastardly, whose Mean Machine is perhaps the fastest car of the lot, could have won a race if he just didn’t stop to cheat.

The three-disc set is colorfully packaged with nice artwork featuring a group shot of all the Wacky Racers in the foldouts. The discs themselves contain commentary on four episodes from noted personnel at HB and two featurettes detailing the history of WACKY RACES and a look at its spinoffs DASTARDLY AND MUTTLEY IN THEIR FLYING MACHINES and THE PERILS OF PENELOPE PITSTOP.

This package is a nicely conceived set, and showcases one of Hanna-Barbera’s most fondly remembered series; its release can only mean that more of HB’s finest is soon to come. (Warner Brothers: please re-read the above. AHEM.)
