One of the most fascinating areas of the classic animation genre lies within the short films which were produced during the World War II era. This was made plainly obvious with the huge success of Disney’s “On The Frontlines” DVD release of 2004. Extensive as this wonderful set was, the scope was somewhat limited, highlighting only the Disney studios productions of the era. Many other animation venues were utilized for the war efforts as well, and producer Steve Stanchfield of Thunderbean Animation has now produced a new DVD sampling, providing a wider range of war era films for us to explore. Specifically,” Cartoons For Victory” is a single disc compendium of animation offering a more global overview, even including rare materials offering the perspective of the Axis powers. Films produced in Britain, Czechoslovakia, Nazi Germany, Occupied France, and of course the USA , can be found here, and it makes for a most intriguing and interesting mix!

The cartoons are grouped in two separate categories, with a third devoted to the Bonus Features. The first grouping includes entertainment/propaganda films that are pretty effective at vilifying the enemy. Of particular note is “Bury The Axis” a first class stop motion piece that is not only comical, but very clever in the musical department as well. It’s very similar in appearance to the George Pal Puppetoons. For an Axis perspective there is the diabolical “Nimbus Libéré” which shows viewers how Mickey, Donald, Goofy, Felix and Popeye, are happily bombing French civilians in order to “Liberate” them. This has to be seen to be believed! Another wonderful film is “The Springman and the SS” a film produced in Czechoslovakia, that is a masterpiece of lampoon. The film is an excellent satire of the perceived extremisms of the Nazi Reich, and centers on the almost clownish antics of a Nazi leader who seems certain every home is a haven for Allied sympathizers. A chimney sweep decides enough is too much and dons sofa springs upon his feet, and a mask made of a sock, with a hole from the heel serving, as his eye portal. Suited up, he bounds to the roof top of the ministry, and catches the SS corps attention by giving out a long yodel and then blows his nose with their flag! He then leads them on a chase that exploits their single mindedness to the point of their own destruction. A very clever film! There are four other equally fascinating films to be explored here as well.

The second and larger grouping consists of educational/training films. Most notable are the “Private Snafu” and “Mr. Hook” cartoons. The infamous “Private Snafu” series was produced by Warner Brothers for the Army-Navy Screen Magazine presentations and were directed by legends such as Robert Clampett and Frank Tashlin. These films have developed an almost cult following, and for good reason. Because of the military’s willingness to allow a little more creativity along adult lines, the subject matter focused more on young enlisted men’s attitudes and interests, and censorship was relaxed accordingly. Two of titles which appear here, “Booby Traps” and “Censored”, are notorious for their “pinup girl” stylings. For instance in “Censored”, Snafu’s gal Sally Lou is portrayed in a sexy topless vignette, albeit demurely covered by an arm, while chatting on the telephone.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Golden Age of Cartoons: Cartoons for Victory!! Click Here

The Mr. Hook cartoon series is extremely rare to find, being produced for the United States Navy. Only four films are known to exist, and all are included here! The uniting theme within these cartoons was to encourage sailors to save their money for after the war, preferably in war bonds. Hook himself was more of an average Joe than Snafu, but soon exhibited all of the guile and resilience expected of an American soldier when challenged by an enemy. The character was actually created by Hank Ketchum, who is more widely known as the creator of the “Dennis the Menace” cartoon strip. The debut cartoon in the series was produced at the Walter Lantz studios, in Technicolor no less!, Titled Take Heed Mr. Tojo (1943) the film was, until this DVD release, obtainable only through “grapevine” trading ventures, and those almost always being of very marginal quality. Here we have the benefit of a gorgeous pristine print source, looking like it was made yesterday!

Another menu selection offers a grouping of films that concentrate on more generic approaches to instructional training for the armed forces. These are surprisingly entertaining, considering how dry the subject material is. In particular “Camouflage” demonstrates the why and how of the subject in an easily understood, but attention keeping manner. Filmed in Technicolor by the First Motion Picture Unit of the US Army Air Corps, it was directed by Disney veteran Frank Thomas, and boasts excellent production values. The instructional aspects of the film are explained by “Jehudi” a chameleon that is well versed in the applications of camouflage. (naturally!) Blending equal measures of humor and seriousness, this is another first rate inclusion in this DVD release.

This may well be the finest collection of films Thunderbean has put together since the “Popeye The Sailor-Original Classics” DVD release. Producer Steve Stanchfield has blended together an excellent variety of rare war-era cartoon films. To be honest the visual quality is a bit lower than usual, but it is more than made up for by the comparative rarity of the films found within. Most of this material has never seen the spotlight of a home video production, so there is a newness here that is rarely experienced in a classic animation genre DVD. And these films are still highly entertaining! I guess the best compliment I can pay this release is to say it belongs right along side my “On The Frontlines” set, and it wouldn’t surprise me at all if I viewed it more often than the Disney set!

Del Walker

thank you to the people who put this amazing collection of war time cartoons together! these “living history” cartoons are all from the war years and have cartoons from all over the world(includeing some german cartoons of the time that must be seen to be belived). this is really one collection that i hope they put out a part 2 and more of. the transfers look great and as history these are a great collection of cartoons!!!!! a must have!!!!!!!!!!

The ABC Family series “THE SECRET LIFE OF THE AMERICAN TEENAGER” received a lot of attention during its first season as the series was critically acclaimed and also how ABC Family didn’t sugarcoat the challenges of teenage pregnancy. Showing us the ramifications of being pregnant as a young teen but also the responsibilities and difficult choices one needs to make. The series was also popular for its portrayal of teenagers of today. Again, nothing sugarcoated and despite it being on ABC Family, the series shows us the real-life challenges that teenagers are facing. These characters are just regular people, not upper class and each of them have their own set of problems.

The series primarily focuses on the life of teenager Amy Juergens (Shailene Woodley). Your typical girl next door. A 15-year-old who plays the French Horn in a band and part of a typical American family ala dysfunctional. During a summer at band cap, Amy met her high school band’s “player” Rickey Underwood (Darren Kagasoff) and with one very quick one night stand, this teenager had her life change in ways she would never imagine. Amy has gotten pregnant and through each episode, we would see how Amy copes with her pregnancy, how she had to contend with morning sickness, becoming the talk of the school and even at one point, considering an abortion.

In the second season, Amy now must face the realization that she has responsibilities and that she can’t depend on her parents for everything. But also major changes for each character as the season progresses.

Here is what is included on “THE SECRET LIFE OF THE AMERICAN TEENAGER – SEASON TWO” DVD (summaries, no spoilers):

DISC 1:

* EPISODE 12 – The Secret Wedding of the American Teenager – Because Amy is not ready for the responsibility of being a mother (and thinking her mother and father will automatically take care of the baby), she wants Ben to consider marrying her immediately via eloping (using fake ID’s). Meanwhile, Amy’s mother Anne requests a divorce from George and that he should move out of the house.

* EPISODE 13 – Baked Nevada – Both Amy and Ben’s father are upset that their children tried to get married. Meanwhile, Adrian’s father (who is a cop) tries to find out where the fake ID’s came from.

* EPISODE 14 – The Father and the Son – Rickey’s father comes to town and tells Amy’s parents that his son can’t be trusted and the bad blood between Rickey and his father is reborn. Meanwhile, Adrian’s father tries to have his daughter keep away from Rickey.

* EPISODE 15 – That’s Enough of That – Rickey tries to cope with his father’s request to sell his and Amy’s baby for money. Meanwhile, Amy can now find out the sex of her unborn child. And Jack serves his community service and discovers something big.

DISC 2:

* EPISODE 16 – Chocolate Cake – Amy talks to Rickey about putting the baby up for adoption. Meanwhile, George’s co-worker (a gay couple) is interested in being adoptive parents. Meanwhile, Rickey upsets Ben and puts into his head that she wants the baby’s father in her life.

* EPISODE 17 – Unforgiven – Amy and Ben have difficulties in their relationship and now Ben needs some time away from Amy. Meanwhile, Anne and George try to help Amy by looking for adoptive parents. Jack finds a new girl that he is interested in.

* EPISODE 18 – Making Up Is Hard to Do – Ashley is trying to find a way to get Amy and Ben back together. Meanwhile, Rickey causes problems during the adoption interview process. Adrian meets a guy who likes her for her and not for sex.

* EPISODE 19 – Money for Nothing, Chicks For Free – Anne tries to look for a job and Ashley meets a guy who is interested in her. Meanwhile, Jack gets himself into a little trouble.

DISC 3:

* EPISODE 20 – Maybe Baby – Ben’s father wants Ben to know a big lesson about money and that if he wants to marry Amy and take care of a baby, he will need to make money on his own. Meanwhile, everyone comes to visit Amy and give her advice about the baby. And Amy makes a decision about her baby and if she’s read to put the baby up for adoption or to keep it.

* EPISODE 21 – Whoomp! (There It Is) – It’s Amy’s baby shower but the problem is that she may be going into labor. Meanwhile, Grace makes a big decision in her life.

* EPISODE 22 – One Night at Band Camp – While Amy is in labor, she remembers the day that she and Rickey met.

* EPISODE 23 – And Unto Us a Child Is Born – Amy gives birth to her baby and Rickey comes to the full realization that he has a child. Amy’s father moves out of the house and Ashley also makes a major decision with her life.

The main premise of “SEASON TWO” is Amy getting near the date she is to give birth but all the emotions she has to deal with. Having to take responsibilities as a mother, having to decide if she needs to give the baby up for adoption or keep the baby and how she will have two men in her life. Of course, each of the other characters have their own storylines and drama but every character is utilized well in this second season and I was quite impressed. The second season was just as touching, emotional and enjoyable as the first season.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

Fortunately, the series is in 16×9 widescreen and because it’s a newer series, the overall series looks good on DVD. Audio selection is regular stereo or Dolby Digital 5.1. Primary audio is mostly dialogue but you will have music segments which utilizes your speakers more than anything. But dialogue is clear. And for music, very cool to hear Molly Ringwald sing the opening theme.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

“THE SECRET LIFE OF THE AMERICAN TEENAGER” comes with a few special features. Included are:

* “Secret Life (You and Me) by the Strange Familiar Music Video – (3:55) A ballad sung by The Strange Familiar featuring clips from “THE SECRET LIFE OF THE AMERICAN TEENAGER” Season One.

JUDGMENT CALL:

“THE SECRET LIFE OF THE AMERICAN TEENAGER” was another enjoyable season that was just as solid as the first. Well-acted, awesome storyline and great how each character was utilized throughout the series and overall, a good balance of fun and teenage angst.

The characters are quite likable and pretty much what is happening with American teenagers today. These are characters and storylines that young people and parents can relate to.

The series does a great job at handling the character development of each character and of course, with topics focusing on sex and friendship but also ramifications that result from sex (one night stands, cheating, affairs, etc.). This second season goes further as Amy learns that having a baby is her responsibility and that her expectation of her parents taking care of the baby full time while she attends school goes out the window; Ben who is in love with Amy and ready to take care of the baby learns that his father won’t share the wealth with him and he has to make money on his own but also having to realize that Rickey will need to be part of Amy’s life whether he likes it or not; Grace who is the girl who practiced abstinence and wanted to wait for the right guy for marriage now contemplating sex; Adrian who always gets what she wants sexually now having to deal with meeting a guy who doesn’t want to have sex with her but he likes her for her and not her body; Jack exploring relationships with women of different ethnicities and bad boy Rickey having a life changing moment when his abusive father returns to his life and when his baby is born.

This second season continues where the last season had left off but presenting real problems for these characters. And each actor portrays their character role remarkably well.

For the parents or adults watching this series, you’ll recognize the parents of these teenagers. “THE SECRET LIFE OF THE AMERICAN TEENAGER” features quite a bit of talent with 80’s teen queen Molly Ringwald playing the character of Anne (Amy’s mother); “Life with Bonnie” actor Mark Derwin as Amy’s father George; “Melrose Place” actress Josie Bissett playing Grace’s mother; “Smallville” and “Dukes of Hazard” actor John Schneider as Grace’s father; “The Sopranos” actor Steve Schirripa as Ben’s father Leo; “Ghostbusters” Ernie Hudson playing the part of Dr. Ken Fields, Lauren’s father.

This second season featured more on Amy’s parents, Anne and George and their marital problems and pending divorce and having to start over especially now with their kids so vulnerable. Grace’s mother and father still have an important role but mainly dealing with her mentally disabled brother who plays a prominent role in the second season as he is making adult decisions (such as wanting to get married to his new girlfriend).

One major difference from this season and last season was that the first season featured a lot of discussion (and an emphasis on “a lot”) about sex and wanting to have sex. The second season actually tones the sexual theme down a bit in terms of all the characters thinking about it (mainly because the first season, a few characters have lost their virginity). This time around, the second season of the series puts more focus on Amy’s pregnancy as the countdown begins to her giving birth. But the overall theme of every character is that everyone is pretty much trying to find their own way with their lives and having to deal with real life situations.

If there was one storyline that I found absolutely ridiculous for season two was the character of Adrian Lee who meets her stepbrother and a guy who she thinks is hot and being the sexual driven girl that she is, now wanting to have sex with her stepbrother. We know that Adrian has this need for sex because of the lack of male involvement in her life growing up but this acting out was a bit out there for this character. You would expect that this headstrong girl knew her boundaries and the writers to further that. It was a bit too “daytime soap opera” for me.

All in all, the second season was just as entertaining as the first season and I look forward in seeing how Amy deals with motherhood on Season Three but most of all, if the father Rickey will take responsibility for his son and what role will Ben play as a father. Of course, the others are equally important in the series and have their own storylines but overall, the second season was quite entertaining, fun and I really enjoyed the types of challenges the characters had to face this season.

“THE SECRET LIFE OF THE AMERICAN TEENAGER” is a wonderful, heartwarming, fun and enjoyable series. Definitely one of the the most enjoyable teen dramas with characters and real life situations that people can relate to.

Overall, “THE SECRET LIFE OF THE AMERICAN TEENAGER – SEASON TWO” is definitely worth checking out on DVD!

I have not seen the show yet ( I saw some pictures and a promo a long time ago ), but I just want to say one thing. This dvd does not contain the second season, but contains the second part of the first season, dvd released a few months ago. So buyers are not confused.

Buena Vista (the company that releases Disney films on DVD) chose to not release anamorphic DVDs when they first came to DVD, so none of these films are anamorphically enhanced. This means, if you have a widescreen television, you will have black bars on all four sides of the picture. Also, these discs are absolutely barebones, only featuring a Dolby 2.0 soundtrack and a 1.85:1 widescreen presentation. Where are the extras?! I don’t know about you guys, but I am a Mighty Duck fan who is disappointed by the DVD releases of these films.

I think the best part about the Mighty Ducks is the way they stick with you. My sister and I have loved these movies since they first came out (and we were quite young at the time) until now and I’m sure the characters and thier stories will hold a special place for us always.

The Ducks teach you not only about hockey but lessons that are really important in life…like how sports are GAMES, and games are supposed to be fun. They teach you you need to work hard to get what you want and that being an individual is more important that following an certain image, but more importanly the Ducks teach you about teamwork.

The Mighty Ducks movies are basically fantastic. At times a bit corny, but always fun to watch. I gave this DVD and these films 5 stars because they deserve it.

Tim Burton’s mind must be a very strange place. Remember, it’s where if you commit suicide you have to work for social services in the afterlife (Ref: Beetlejuice). I’m a social worker, so I know what that means! Men with hands made of scissors, Jack Nicholson as Batman’s foil…this is one sick puppy of a director.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride! Click Here

So when you hear Mr. Burton is directing a film based on an Eastern European folktale in which one of the heroines-the heroines, mind you—is a corpse….well, family fare is not what comes to mind.

And, although it’s animated, Corpse Bride definitely is not for the younger set, 9 or so and below. These characters look creepy. The title character has a habit of losing her eye and talking to the maggot, Louie, who lives behind it. Skeletons of dogs and people walk and talk about in the “underworld”.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride! Click Here

However, like Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands, older children will find the animations amusing and fascinating; and parents will be pleased with the messages packaged in the film.

Briefly, “Corpse Bride” is an animated operetta in which Victor (voiced by Johnny Depp), son of fishmongers, is engaged to Victoria, (Emily Watson) the daughter of nobles who are now penniless. Neither know each other but meet accidentally and fall in love. When Victor stumbles over his complicated wedding vows at the rehearsal, he’s humiliated by a stranger at the wedding (Richard E. Grant) and walks in the woods to practice. When he says the vows, he places the ring on a “twig” that turns out to be the finger of Emily (Helena Bonham-Carter), the Corpse Bride, who of course jumps up and happily informs him they are married. (She’s very pretty, by the way, dead or not).

Much of the rest of the movie is taken up by Victor trying to figure out how to get out from the Underworld and by Emily trying to either deny he’s doing that or actively convince him to stay. Gradually, however, Victor finds, to his surprise, that he is falling in love with Emily.

In the end the viewers have heard some good lessons about love, and the main characters, primarily Emily and Victor, have each been willing to sacrifice greatly for the other, out of their love for each other. The importance of wedding vows is a central theme, and Victor especially gives long thought to whom his alliances lie, given what he’s promised, and to whom. And those motivated by greed, such as Richard Grant’s character, mostly come out empty handed.

The comedy is brilliant. In one scene, Emily’s friends in the “pub” do a number quite reminiscent of the Star Wars cantina scene, given the odd-looking musicians. I’m not sure how well the “operetta” mode works with animation; while claymation gives these characters terrific means of expression, they are still limited in their ability to emote, and musical theatre may be best left to human faces. Still, Danny Elfman’s score is beautiful as always.

Leave the wee ones with the other parent next door at “March of the Penguins” or “Wallace and Gromit: Search for the Were-Rabbit”, then huddle with the rest of the kids to see this wonderful film.

Corpse Bride was the first Blu-Ray movie I couldn’t wait to see. I had it on DVD and viewed it many times and as I knew the movie inside and out, along with the issues with displaying the SD DVD on my HD TV, I was excited to be able to make a side by side comparison between the 2 releases.

Corpse Bride on Blu-Ray completely blows the other Blu-Ray movies I own out of the water in terms of authoring. The clarity of the image is astounding and the difference between DVD and Blu-Ray is made overly apparent when you can do a comparison of the 2 directly.

In the Blu-Ray release of CB you can see the texture of the puppets’ faces, something certainly lacking in the DVD. You can also see in the skeleton dance scene some of the metal bits holding the puppets together. On the DVD you can see it but it is difficult or nearly impossible to tell what the shiny piece is.

As far as the movie, it’s a great love story in Tim Burton’s typical twisted fashion.

Definitely worth checking out as a movie but also worthy of checking out what Blu-Ray is capable of.

Saw 3 does what most third installments don’t do; it comes back at us with a tight script, super laden with mystery and yet despite all the loose ends that tighten, does not lose its power. Coupled with this are supreme images of ghastly terror within the modernized medieval type torture devices that we never get enough of.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Saw III! Click Here

Saw 3 picks up lightly where the 2nd one left off, but does not dwell there long. In this film, we’re reintroduced to jigsaw yet again, but more of the focus is on his apprentice this time. Meantime, several characters, some strangers, some not, come into play. One of the “key” (no pun intended) members of this cast is Jeff (played by Angus MacFadyen). Jeff is apprehended by someone and soon finds himself in quite a predicament. The key (again, no pun intended) here is that unlike other victims of the vigilante/vengeance psychopath known as “jigsaw”, Jeff is not shackled, bound or trapped. His quest is to take place throughout the industrial maze of brick, steel and cement landscape that has become a staple of “Jigsaw” hangouts. Jeff has not been paying attention to the family that needs him, but only because of hatred that has filled him over the loss of a loved one. Now he must play jigsaw’s final game, to see if he can overcome his problems and in the process, simply survive the carnage.

Jigsaw’s apprentice (Amanda, played by Shawnee Smith) has quite a past of her own as we soon discover. Despite the power you would think she would yield, we quickly learn how fragile all the seams of life really are. Saw 3 again shows great imagination and unique direction in the horror genre with such devices as the shotgun collar, attached body chains, ribcage reversal vest, the ice shower, pig guts vat, and another called “the rack”. Jigsaw (played brilliantly by veteran actor Tobin Bell) has more tricks up the sleeve than you can shake a blade at. The writing of Saw 3 is superb as it intertwines multiple characters on a destiny soaked with death. The key again, is also its ability to not make to much of a puzzle of it as much as intertwine past events of the first two movies to make it come together with one final showdown. What will become of Jeff? What happens at Jigsaw’s bed when the minute is up? Will the apprentice fulfill her mission or die trying?

Buy,Download, Or Stream Saw III! Click Here

Gore Factor of this movie is a 9 of 10. At times Saw 3 is able to freak you out with its nailed hands, ripped skin and breaking bones. The humanity and irony that surrounds some of its more special parts is often drowned out with glimpses of complete carnage so gory that you just better hope you saved Dinner for later.

I was so disappointed with ‘Saw 2′ that I almost skipped this film entirely…..I’m glad I didn’t. In this third installment they go back to the roots of the first film and come up with an entertaining sequel. The version I watched on cable was not extremely gory to me but, it had enough blood and aftermaths to make most gorehounds happy. This is definitely worth a look.

I am a fan of D’Onofrio and was hoping to see something different for Zegers than those last two dark outings in Gardens of the Night and Normal – and was pleasantly surprised by the time the credits rolled.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Narrows! Click Here

The story follows our twentysomething (Zegers) as he lives with his crippled dad (D’Onofrio) in Brooklyn while working for a car service run by a small-time mobster. The only significant difference between this and the Heart of the Old Country (The Narrows) would be he has the added aspiration of being a photographer, which in itself sets the style of film making. That being lots of picture work being still-shot into the storyline and multiple lens colorings/scene changes, including black & white, sepia, chroma, yellow and a few others. The line follows his struggles with his dad, being owned by the mob, finding love, finding his art in photography – and staying alive.

The BD quality is excellent at times, mediocre in other sequences, but that lens change and digital camera feel were on purpose so I do not fault it with a lower rating. The opening CGI sequence of shifting from a bullet to a football looked pristine – nice reference point right off. The DTS worked fine but gets used very little to the outer channels. The amount of clarity degradations would normally make me rate this Blu lower, but it all serves a purpose and the majority of sequences show NY in excellent 1080. The supplements are thorough for a character film and include:

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Narrows! Click Here

* 43 minute interview with the director and writer. Gives you some good insight into how this came to be – nice connection between the screenwriter and the book author (went to writing school together).

* 11 minute interview with Zegers. Seems like a good kid with a heart in this.

* 21 minute interview with Sophia Bush.

* 7 minute interview with D’Onofrio. Would have expected a longer cut but I realize he is all about the work speaking for itself.

* 7 minute interview with McGloughlin (author). Not his best location interview.

* Commentary with writer and director. ESL for Francois but he provides a decent narration.

All of the supplements are lodef and play individually (no play all).

Four stars for the film content and clarity, one for the supplements. Hope you enjoy a solid performance piece from everyone involved.

I recently purchased this DVD European War collection and I’m enjoying these wonderful war films at a price that’s so affordable it must be seen to believe. This World War II DVD Collection-European Warfare includes 5 outstanding War epics that were received by the movie-going public as fascinating with a great story line and many action-packed scenes that most critics moved to give these films a thumbs up. It’s difficult to point out which film ranks the best. You can choose any 5 exciting war epics, my favorites “The Dirty Dozen” and “Where Eagles Dare” were given 3-1/2 – 4 Stars. The picture transfer on all 5 are crisp and clear and the sound is remarkably full-bodied stereo. Five stars for a great collection of War films that can be watched over and over again.

This box is worth the money just for Where Eagles Dare and The Dirty Dozen. Being a WWII Tank fanatic spoilt the other movies for me, trying to pass off an Israeli tank as a Tiger, no no no. Other wise a good buy.

Like most baby boomers, I’ve watched this film dozens of times in the past on broadcast TV, then VHS tape, then LaserDisc … but I had never actually SEEN “The Wizard of Oz” until this newly restored DVD came out. It’s an amazing transfer. The sepia-tone Kansas sequences are startlingly sharp and clear, and the Technicolored world “Over the Rainbow” is truly dazzling. I found myself fascinated by details I had never noticed before: the glittering corn stalks in the Scarecrow’s field; the mirror-like floors of the Emerald City; the polished buttons on the guardsmen’s uniforms. Incredibly, even the individual grains of red sand in the Witch’s hourglass stood out and glistened! All these minor-but-sumptuous visual details served to heighten the magical spell that the film has always woven, enhancing the performances, the story, and the music.

The DVD extras are a mind-boggling embarrassment of riches. The “Making Of” documentary hosted by the incomparable Angela Lansbury is worth the price of the DVD alone, but there’s so much more: an international poster gallery, interviews with cast members, deleted scenes, production stills, radio clips, etc, etc. There’s enough material to keep even the most casual viewer fascinated for hours, and a true Oz buff will be occupied for days!

If you only bought a DVD player to watch this one disc, it would well be worth the expense. Treat yourself, and fall in love with this classic film again … for the first time.

I was just critized for foisting off the following review of the 3-disk DVD set as a review of the new Blu-ray. I didn’t; Amazon did. As anyone who’s been here for a while will notice, Amazon throws all DVD reviews into the same bucket, regardless of the edition. So don’t blame me.

There’s no need to discuss “The Wizard of Oz” itself, a classic among classics (though I’ll have something to say about its “philosophy” later on). You probably want to know whether the UltraResolution transfer justifies the purchase.

It does. Oh, yes it does.

“The Wizard of Oz” has always looked good, one of the better Technicolor films. Unlike “Gone With the Wind”, which was generally dark and desaturated, and which UltraResolution greatly improved, I didn’t expect much enhancement for “Oz”.

Was I ever wrong. I stared with my jaw hanging open. “Oz” is the best UltraResolution transfer by far — and the others were not exactly chopped liver.

The improvement in detail and sharpness is startling, especially as the original prints did not seem obviously lacking in either. Even more amazing is the expansion of the tonal scale. Dark scenes (particularly those in the forest and outside the “witches” castle) are now filled with rich detail. Have you ever noticed how beautiful the Winkies’ red, white, and gray uniforms are? I hadn’t — until now.

These enhancements combine produce the biggest improvement of all — a major revelation of _texture_. The “feltiness” of many costumes is obvious. The burlap of the Scarecrow’s face is now plainly visible, particularly in the close-up where he misstates the Pythagorean Theorem. And the Lion’s costume is a thick pile of fur you want to reach out and stroke. You can see every last strand of hair.

I’m exaggerating only slightly when I say the improvements of this UltraResolution transfer are not much less than those from cleaning the Sistine Chapel’s frescos. It’s as if layers of murk and grime — that you never even knew were there! — have been stripped away. Until you view it, you cannot imagine what this film (that is, the original camera negatives) _really_ looks like. It’s a shame the people who created “Oz” never got to see it this way.

The image quality is so high that I often felt as if I were looking through a window at live performers. (Well, almost.) No matter what versions you already have, you won’t be disappointed with this one. I watched it twice in two days, and I might even view it a third time tonight.

My only quibble is that several matte paintings do not blend properly, because the hues at the join lines do not match those of the scene. This could have been fixed; I suspect it seemed too much work for a small improvement. (A friend suggested that these sorts of things are left in because videophiles enjoy finding them.)

As to the differences between the two- and three-disk sets… The latter includes a packet of original programs and promotional material of the sort we haven’t seen in 40 years ago. (Remember the 50-cent deluxe programs for road-show films?) There’s also a set of 10 reproductions of Kodachrome publicity photographs. For this viewer, these extras alone justify the higher price.

The third disk will be of most interest to lovers of all things Oz. It includes a handsomely produced biography of L. Frank Baum (interesting enough that you might want to watch it more than once), plus all the silent Oz films and a Technicolor Oz cartoon. The existence of these is well-known to anyone familiar with the history of Oz productions, but they’ve never appeared (as far as I know) in any home-video format.

The films are problematic. The two from Baum’s production company are the best — they have style, charm, and imagination. The others are cheesy ripoffs that bear little relation to the original book. The Larry Semon — a once wildly-popular but now virtually forgotten cartoonist and comic * — version is especially obnoxious, as it is little more than a vehicle for Semon’s brand of physical comedy. The Baum estate is at least partly to blame — _any_ movie version must have seemed more attractive than none, especially as the technology to make a convincing version of “Oz” would not exist for another 15 years.

The film’s opening titles praise the book’s “kindly philosophy”, which seems to be either “You already have everything you need to be happy”, or “The answer to your problems lies within yourself”. These are not so much “kindly” as reflections of the hard-nosed “All your problems are your own fault” and “If you’re not a success, it’s because you’re lazy” homilies that grew out of the great opportunity for personal development and material success this country offered.

I believe L. Frank Baum had something a bit different in mind. “The Wizard of Oz” is a fairy tale in which magic has no bearing on the issues at the center of the story. I believe Baum wanted to discourage children from fantasizing that magic could be a solution to one’s problems.

So… he has the four principals make a grueling journey to the Emerald City, then find the wizard is a humbug. (What a shame the blander “fake”, “fraud”, or “phony” have replaced that delightful word.) He posesses no magic to supply wit, love, or grit, which the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and Cowardly Lion have demonstrated they already have.

Baum’s “moral” is simple — Love, wisdom, and courage are what we need to get through life. No one can _give_ them to us, because we _already_ possess them, and all we need to do is express them.

“Is that right?”

“That’s all it is.”

Now… the question you’ve been waiting for the answer to… Is the Blu-ray set worth the price?

I viewed the Blu-ray on a Pioneer 60″ Pro Kuro, fed from a Sony BDP-S550. I also watched the DVD on the Pioneer (fed from the same Blu-ray player), and on a 36″ Sony 400-series WEGA “improved definition” TV (fed from a Sony DVP-S7000).

The DVD remains a terrific DVD, and looks terrific on a high-quality 480i monitor. (See the preceding review.) It was, and still is, a demo-quality DVD.

When played on the BD player, and upconverted to 1080p, the DVD’s image on the Kuro is pretty darn good — the sharpness and detail are at least “acceptable”. But when you play the Blu-ray disk, the image goes from “acceptable” to almost-startling. Two examples… Note the enhanced detail and texture in the weather-beaten wood above the WWE’s lifeless legs. And in the crowd scenes, you can see (just about) every Munchkin face. There is virtually no smearing of detail.

So… should you rush right out in a buying frenzy and get the BD edition? It depends.

The DVD is good enough for an excellent picture on a high-quality SD monitor. But even upconverted, it isn’t good enough for a _large_ HD display. If you have, say, a 40″ display; your BD player has a good upconverter (not all do); and you don’t sit “on top of” the screen (as I do); you might see little difference between the DVD and the Blu-ray.

But if you’re a video fuss-budget (as I am) and sit closer than the “experts” recommend (why _shouldn’t_ you?), you will almost certainly prefer the Blu-ray. It’s your call.

A few remarks on the extras… The wristwatch, as the kid in the Ally bank commercial says, is a piece of junk. The design shows no particular style, wit, or imagination. And as others have said, “The Dreamer of OZ” is a wretched transfer, very badly unpconverted to 1080. It is not of acceptable quality, and should have been put on the DVD disk.

I will come back later (I hope) with some more comments on the sound and the other extras. Forcing yourself to repeatedly watch large chunks of a movie, regardless of its quality, is an ennervating experience.

A very unusual film for its time, Walkabout combines many themes in what is ostensibly a tale of survival in the Australian outback. I suppose it was a bit too racy for American audiences as Roeg focuses lovingly on a young nubile Jenny Augutter but that would be missing the point of this movie which contrasts the sterile life of a young British girl and boy with an Aborigine man-child.

The film depicts the initial bleakness of the Australian desert which the two children find themselves thrust into after the father mysteriously chooses to commit suicide, but eventually shows the immense diversity of the outback as the young Aborigine leads the lost children back to civilization. Roeg uses a variety of cinematic techniques to paste together his poetic vision, ultimately developing the sexual tension between Agutter and the Aborigine, culminating in a fateful courting ritual which Agutter appears oblivious too. However, the star of the movie is the little boy, Luc Roeg, who forms a very special bond with the Aborigine.

The film may be too much to handle for small children, but it is ideal for teenagers, as it will give them a very different experience from the run-of-the-mill teen movies that proliferate in the video stores. Don’t fret over the R rating, as the nudity is fleeting and treated in a very respectful way. In Britain, the rating is 12 for young teenagers.

In Gus Van Sant’s Elephant, we follow several teenagers around for half a day, with little or no dialogue, and with nothing to connect us to the characters. We watch a father drive his kid to school, drunk. We watch three girls vomit in the bathroom after eating lunch. We watch two teenagers shoot up the school, ala Columbine, all without any given reason. That film won the Golden Palm and Best Director awards at the Cannes Film Festival. Although I was not a fan of the film at all, in fact I was disgusted by it, I have learned to understand why Van Sant chose to shoot his film the way he did; little or not plot, and no back story for the characters, and little audience interaction with the characters.

Walkabout is somewhat similar to the style that Van Sant used in Elephant, and reportadley also in his films Gerry and Last Days, but it was done over 30 years prior. Its a beautiful film, told quite simply, over the course of an unkwown number of days. We get to know the characters, but not through back story, or by seeing them in their daily lives. The only thing we know about either one of them (the 14 year old girl and her six or seven year old brother) is that they are English living in Australia, and both attend prep-school…and even this is an assumption based on their language and uniforms, not on anything the film really tells us.

The story, as told in every review, is about how the two are mystreriously brought to the outback by their father, who then tries to kill them, and then kills himself. They are close to death as they wander through the desert, until a young Aborigine boy of 16 sees them and essentially rescues them.

One reviewer complains that nothing happens. I disagree, plenty happens. Its random, as is nature, and nature is where these characters exist in this film. Not alot is explained to us, nor do I think we are supposed to figure alot out. We are supposed to watch, and see things as the characters see them. I loved the way the film juxtapozed the Aborigine with the civilized world. There is a harsh, yet amazing scene, where the Aborigine has killed a kangaroo and is cutting it up. The scene is intercut with scenes of a butcher hacking up meat in his butcher shop. Although it seems random at first, when viewed in the rest of the film, it fits in perfectly in the movie’s method of comparing the similarites, despite the obvious differences, between the two cultures.

As Roger Ebert pointed out in his The Great Movies II, communication is also a major subject of study in this film–meaning, there hardly is any. The boy is somehow able to get through to the Aborigine, but the girl maintains her distance, probably by choice. She was brought up upper-class, and no doubt that is the lifestyle she enjoys. The Aborigine is no better. He speaks his language throughout the film, as if the two English could understand him. It doens’t matter to him that they can’t. Neither side is innocent of close-mindedness in this respect.

There is also a certain sexual under-tone in this film. Some reviewers regarded the nudity as non-sexual. For the most part, I’d agree. However, the scene that was orignally cut from this film and restored in the lated 90s, is highly sexual. While the Aborigine boy is out hunting, displaying his brutish masculinity, the girl is swimming naked in an oasis. The scene is not sexual as most American audiences know it. There is never a loving embrace between the two, and it hardly seems that she is at all attracted to him. Also, she does not watch him hunt. Yet to deny the sexual urges of either character throughout the film, displayed mostly in this scene (there is some evidence of it scattered througout, also) would mean that you’ve put up blinders. True, no sex occurs, but the girls beautiful body is fully displayed at the same time as the young-man’s raw masculitnity. This is contrast to the nudity at the films very end, which is playful, but not in the least bit sexual. Its a fine line, and the film’s director has walked in well, without losing his balance.

This was a beautiful film, and I’d love to see it again. I urge the viewer not to expect much on story. There is a plot–the white kids want to get home and the Aborigine helps them find it–but that is not the key focus. The plot is the means to an end. That end being a study of cultural differences, done in a very intellegent, patient, and much more interesting way than I’ve ever seen.

If you want a “good movie”–”good” as in “well written and well acted”–then take reviewer #1’s advice and press on. But if you’re in the mood for a funny as hell low-budget remake of CHILD’S PLAY with blackfolk, then RAGDOLL is a treat. Set in contemporary New Orleans, I picked up this film because of the concept and its cast. The concept isn’t original, but a horror film peopled almost entirely by blackfolk? That, at least, should get a screening. But, like the previous reviewer, I nearly ejected the joint with the quickness. No spoilers, but the opening scene was too laughable for words. Made to give the film some historical background, this scene is beyond belief. Think MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000. Problem is, MST is to be campy, while these folk look like they are really trying hard. Add this with the producers’ obvious attempts to pass a wanna-be hip hop video as a movie, then there is no surprise why reviewer #1 fell out. Fortunately I watched this with good company, who had a great sense of humor. After the slow set up, the film picks up pace when THE RAGDOLL starts whoopin’ folks’ *! Here’s a line from RAGDOLL that made the movie for me:

“Girl, pass the paprika! Can’t you see this man putting gris-gris on me?!”

The delivery is priceless. I’m giving RAGDOLL two stars for that alone.

Enjoy!

Ragdoll is one of the most chilling, exciting movies I’ve ever seen! The story is about a kid (Quama) who accidently “conjures up the magic of the killin’ kind” when, with the help of Shadow Man, he brings a (rag)doll to life. He summons the ragdoll to kill an evil music company boss who wants his music group to sign a contract. But, something goes wrong when Quama tells Shadow Man he can have anything he wants. . . .what Quama doesn’t know is that every person Ragdoll kills that Quama wants dead, it also kills one of his FRIENDS!! Watch and see what happens in this fun, amazing film. Well casted and well played, great peice of work!
