The Apartment is an insightful movie made by one of cinema’s most talented directors. The plot is fairly simple, but C.C. Baxter’s (Jack Lemmon) is anything but. By innocently lending out his apartment to a coworker, Baxter’s residence becomes the love nest for his philandering colleagues. Along the way, Baxter develops a friendship with Fran Kubelik (Shirley Maclaine), one of several attractive female elevator operators. Baxter is rewarded for his generosity by getting promoted by Jeff D. Sheldrake (Fred MacMurray). Little does he realize that Fran is Sheldrake’s latest plaything. The Apartment has all that you expect from the best of Wilder: great performances, witty dialogue, and a plot that holds to this day, even if most of the depiction of the corporate office environment has changed dramatically (When was the last time you saw an elevator operator?). The three stars provide great characterizations, with MacMurray the real surprise here playing against type. This film is also notable for solidifying the Wilder/Lemmon team. With The Apartment, Lemmon was no longer playing second male leads or supporting roles. A worthwhile film that is still enjoyable today, but the DVD version leaves much to be desired. The picture quality is good, but the looping (the sound synchronization) is off and very distracting. Don’t know the reason for this, but considering this film’s place in cinema history, I would have thought it would have gotten the A treatment. The DVD is a disappointment.

This 1960 winner of the Academy Award for Best Picture of 1960,touched our hearts and made us smile 43 years ago and still does today. It has not lost one bit of it’s charm and continues to add new fans all the time. It’s a treasure chest of great cinema moments, and a must own for collectors of classics, Billy Wilder or Jack Lemmon films.

Lemmon’s immense talent shines through as C.C. Baxter, one of thousands of office workers in a huge company who is quickly working his way to the top floor and the executive washroom. He’s got what it takes to get ahead…he’s a dedicated employee, and a hard worker, he’s got they key to success…and it opens the door to his apartment! It seems the powers that be on the upper floors have discovered this single guy’s bachelor pad and have badgered Baxter into letting them use it for their little extracurricular activities.

Things get complicated for C.C. though, when the big boss wants in on the action. He wants the apartment for his own use and now C.C. has a chance to go all the way to the top floor. But the rewards are bittersweet..Mr. Sheldrake’s girl turns out to be the very sweet elevator operator Miss Fran Kubelik. The very girl that C.C. adores himself.

The moments as we watch C.C. agonize over this dilemma are touchingly funny, and poignant. Lemmon is brillant in his portrayal as he is able to bring all these emotions to the screen. The rest of the cast is excellent as well. Shirley MacLaine(Fran) will touch your heart, Fred MacMurray(Sheldrake) is marvelous at his turn as the philandering exec(you’ll see him in a very different light from his “My Three Sons” role), and also look for such great notables as Ray Walston, Jack Kruschen, Joan Shawlee,Hope Holiday and the wonderful Edie Adams. Oscar also honored legendary director Billy Wlider for his work as director and another for screenplay along with I.A.L. Diamond. The music by Adolph Deutsch is as sweet as the story and will stay with you for quite some time after the view.

Overall the DVD was quite good. This 43 year old film looked pretty good. It could use a little improvement. There were times when it showed it’s age, but the black and white images were clear and bright for the most part. The sound is in Dolby Dig MONO!….”Some Like It Hot” made only 1 year prior to this one, has been enhanced with Dol Dig 5.1(on both DVD editions) and sounds great. The Special Edition of “SLIH”, even gives you the choice of watching it in the 5.1 or the original mono. This is a film that deserves at least the same attention. It may be veiwed in French and Spanish and has subtitles in those langauges as well. But..there are no subtitles or captions in English for hearing impaired viewers to enjoy this great classic and that is a shame. This is a film that should be enjoyed by all! MGM..maybe it’s time for a new edition of this treasure.

“That’s the way it crumbles….cookie-wise”(Shirley MacLaine to Fred MacMurray)…..enjoy…Laurie

This was the third Hartley film I saw & has remained my favourite. For me it holds all the quintessential characteristics of a Hartley film despite it not being feature length.Martin Donovan as usual gives a flawless performance as do the rest of the cast. Things to look out for……the bartender & the’dance routine’. GENIUS!

I first saw Surviving Desire when I was 15. It was on the local PBS and the whole world stopped. I called the TV station to see what it was that I has watched. When they told me, I immediately wanted to buy it. I searched for 6 years. No one new what I was talking about, much less who Michael Donovan was, and my searches always remained fruitless. Surviving Desire changed my views on movies as a whole. When I saw it, I realized there was no excuse for crappy movies. The relationships between characters was so intimate in a very sterile way. I suggest all persons interested in fine cinema, who have a love for indie films and can appreciate something non-mainstream NEED to see this movie!

—I first saw this movie at the theater my second year of college (1968-69) in Texas. At that time, it being the late 1960’s, it seemed perfectly normal to me that it was complex and confusing. It was psychedelic. How can anyone who enjoyed the Beatles “Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” “Magical Mystery Tour,” and the “White Album,” not to mention The Doors’ “Strange Days,” or Iron Butterfly’s “Inagodadavida” (sp?), complain about a movie that is confusing?

—Nicholas Urfe (Michael Caine) accepts a job as an English teacher at a private boys school on the idyllic Greek island of Phraxos. As he settles into his room, he finds a cryptic note left in a drawer by his predecessor who had committed suicide. The note reads “beware the waiting room.” On the weekends Urfe explores the far side of the island and discovers the villa of the mysterious Maurice Conchis (Anthony Quinn) who invites him for weekend visits where Conchis entertains Urfe with his life story. In these stories of his past, Conchis presents to Urfe major dilemmas where the choices are life-changing. Subsequently, in a series of “Twilight Zonesque” time shifts, Urfe finds himself trapped into reliving these same stories and being forced to make the same life-changing choices. The effect is, well, “mind-blowing,” both for the character Urfe, and for the viewer. Is Urfe hallucinating or dreaming, or is this a well-planned masque, directed by the “master-manipulator” Conchis, where Urfe is unwillingly cast as the central character?

—I guess my take on it is that the mind-blowing nature of the film fit very well with the zeitgeist of the late 1960’s. The film itself may be lacking, but the greater story, only partly told in an abbreviated version in this movie, is much, much better than could ever be captured on film. Instinctively, I knew this and sought out the book in the Fall of 1969. I found it at Doubleday Bookstore in New York City while visiting for the Texas A&M vs. Westpoint football game. The book helped me survive the long, cold, rainy winter of 1969-70, as I was manipulated into making life-changing decisions — school vs. Vietnam, girls vs. grades, polyester vs. cotton, Santana vs. Led Zeppelin, etc. etc. etc. As Nicholas Urfe rode the roller coaster of his life, so did we.

—I’m glad to see that the movie is in video.

One of the reviewers mentioned David Lynch. I recall waiting with anticipation for the film adaptation of _Dune_, hoping that the movie in my mind would be realized, and discovering through the film flaws in the book that my adolescent mind had not noticed when I fell in love with it. Something like that is true of _The Magus_ as well. It *is* fairly faithful to the book, and many of the more embarrassing scenes of dialogue are taken directly from it. So my first reaction to seeing this film is a troubled sense that I was wrong to love this book.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Magus! Click Here

What’s missing? Three things: time, the narrator, and a realist texture. For a sense of what I mean by the third, see Minghella’s _Talented Mr. Ripley_ to see how this film should look, should feel (indeed, how, if it were remade today, it could even be cast–all that’s missing is Ben Kingsley as Conchis). But what makes the book work is that the fascinating and bizarre events are made plausible by their embedding in a realistic frame: Nicholas’ life away from Conchis’ universe is utterly real by being largely veiled autobiography. He is the typical callow young man as would-be writer, struggling fitfully to overcome his narcissism and join the human race, while desperately clinging to that same narcissism in the knowledge that only this will allow him to become the artist he would betray himself by not becoming. The Conchis Masque is but the externalization of Nicholas’ “therapy” as he sorts through this paradox, grows up and becomes a Real Writer. For every Real Writer is perilously close to a merely Failed Human Being.

In the book, Nicholas experiences Bourani (the site of Conchis’ manipulations) the way people experience affairs: as what seems for a time an endlessly fascinating distraction from the intolerable experience of being who they are. On this level, the book is essentially the story of an affair, and Nicholas’ guilt is an essential part of him finding his way to resolution. But the film so compresses the events that we get only Conchis, only the affair, and almost none of the narcissism, tedium, failure and self-doubt of Nicholas, or the process by which he comes to terms with them through his guilt over how his self-importance and thirst for experience harm the women in his life. And yet it is this which makes the book seem real (especially to the many young Nicholases who read it) and thus confers reality on the otherwise incredible, and incredibly silly things that transpire on the island.

I remain convinced that this film could’ve been done, but there must be much much more of the ordinariness of Nicholas, so that the fantastic stands out that much more. _French Lieutenant’s Woman_ gives us some inkling of how a very free but literate adaptation can be penned, and _Talented Mr. Ripley_ gives us some notion of how it could be shot. But it must be *much* longer, and that length should be devoted to showing what the novel shows: how we grow through love.

The continuation of the first disc. Here they go to a different country where they battle new enemies and make new friends. It’s a must if you bought the first volume.

Here we have the conclusion of the first world they were in, retrieving Sakura’s feather from the kudan that absorbed it (you won’t believe who’s it was!). So of course, they go and jump to the next world. This has got to be one of my favorite set of episodes. This world, they land in a village where the town is being oppressed and controlled by an evil lord named Tombal and his son. Tombal has a power called hijutsu, and guess what’s amplifying it? That’s right, Sakura’s feather! This set of episodes has alot more action, and emotion, then the other set of episodes. It’s just totally breath-taking. Will they be able to storm the fortress and get Sakura’s feather back? Well, you’ll just have to watch and find out!

Nobody played the accused innocent any better than John Payne. Tall and good looking, Payne exuded a quiet moral strength combined with an ability and willingness to mess it up with the bad boys whenever the situation dictated. An Eagle Scout with a merit badge in bar brawling.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Kansas City Confidential! Click Here

KANSAS CITY CONFIDENTIAL is a smart little crime drama that features Payne as the unluckiest of flower delivery drivers in motion picture history. It seems that Mr. Big, bad guy Preston Foster, has been meticulously plotting a bank heist, and an integral part of his plan involves using an exact duplicate of Payne’s truck as the getaway vehicle. Nothing personal, John. The bad guys don’t even know you.

Mr. Big has recruited three thugs (Jack Elam, Lee van Cleef, and Neville Brand) to pull off the heist, taking the precaution of insisting they always wear masks while in each other’s presence. That way, if things go wrong, nobody will know who his accomplices are. For a good part of this movie the only one who has anything going wrong is poor John Payne, who is promptly fingered as one of the bank robbers. In this movie, Payne seemingly can’t walk into a room without getting pounded by some burly cop or surly con.

KANSAS CITY CONFIDENTIAL is briskly paced and offers enough small surprises to keep us on our toes. Phil Karlson was a great director, under-appreciated in his time and relegated almost exclusively to B-movie duties. KANSAS CITY CONFIDENTIAL is one of his best. Strongly recommended.

For years Kansas City Confidential has languished in the Public Domain Hell. Released in a woefully substandard version from Alpha (watch the video wiggle at the bottom of the screen every 10 seconds), and a much better, but still flawed version from Image (the picure is just a bit too dark and has some minor print damage), along with several “dollar” DVD versions that were even more flawed than the Alpha and Image releases, Kansas City Confidential was a movie that most Film Noir fans thought would never see an “official” DVD release by MGM (owner of the master print, and – presumably – the negatives).

Buy,Download, Or Stream Kansas City Confidential! Click Here

But here it is – MGM is actually releasing (or has released, depending on when you read this) the “official” DVD for this fantastic Film Noir. Based on their track record of releasing official versions of movies previously relegated to public domain releases (see He Walked By Night as an example – MGM’s DVD is flawless!), this should see a drastic improvement in both image and sound quality over all of the previous versions released to date.

The movie itself is a tightly written, well acted (John Payne is fantastic, and the supporting cast of Preson Foster, Lee Van Cleef, Neville Brand, Jack Elam, and Coleen Gray are all near perfect in their roles), and extremely well directed by Phil Karlson.

This is a classic crime/wrong man framed and sets out for revenge movie. For fans of Film Noir this is truly a, “Must Have,” DVD.

Update – The DVD is, as expected, a HUGE improvement over the Image release, which istself is much better than the Alpha version. MGM/Fox have done a very nice job on the quality of this release – the print used is excellent. Even if you already have a previous version of Kansas City Confidential you still may want to get this one for the much improved picture and sound.

Groundhog Day is available for streaming or downloading.

I’m going to forego a review of the movie. Let others do that. Here’s my input on the bonus stuff:

What’s good:
“The weight of time” documentary – What makes this documentary somewhat unique, is that it allows the screenwriter some screen time to convey what his vision of the movie would have been. It’s a gutsy move that Ramis allowed this on his film, since the original concept of Groundhog Day was far darker than the final product. It’s an interesting watch, although it would have been nicer if Bill Murray made an appearance in the documentary.
Director’s commentary: Ramis’ approach is to tell small anecdotes about minor characters, how people were cast, how the scenes were filmed, etc. It’s interesting and entertaining in its own right. He doesn’t just drone on and on like many directors do. I think his acting and comedy background helps make him be more interesting, personable, and accessable for viewers to listen to.

What’s lousy:
I’m probably alone on this, but the animated menus are annoying, silly, and slow. You have to wait for the animation to get going before you’re allowed to make your choice. It’d be forgivable if there were any easter eggs hidden, but I know of none. So, it’s just annoying.

I might be making a bold claim saying this is the best Bill Murray film of them all. Many people would call me on that with films that showcase his sophomoric hijinks like Stripes or Ghostbusters. Some may look at his more slightly more refined character works like What About Bob? and Scrooged as their hits. To me Groundhog Day tops them all. This is because not only do you have Bill Murray doing a perfect performance, but also because the content itself (and the writing behind it) takes this movie to the next level.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Groundhog Day! Click Here

Groundhog Day is a morality piece done in the vein of a classic Rod Serling’s Twilight Zone episode. I kind of “what if…?” sort of tale that puts a generally successful and selfish man (played by Murray) into a hopeless situation of never being able to escape a single day in a small town. On the surface the story it looks like a situation comedy with Murray’s character living the same Groundhog Day over and over. However the further you go into the movie you get some true and believable character development. The fact Bill pulls it off convincingly as well as with his classic entertaining wit is what makes the movie shine.

Don’t think of the movie as just some lesson to learn and take with you. While it does have that they don’t preach it to you. You figure the lessons out along with Phil (Murray), and that makes for a rather deep experience. The movie at its core is a comedy, and it’s such a good comedy it’s rating among the top comedies of all time by various film associations. It’s not just a comedy either as it also has a healthy dose of romance in it. So much romance that it can pass off as a “chick flick” for those who are into that. So I guess you can say Groundhog Day is a romantic comedy/Twilight-Zonesque/morality play.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Groundhog Day! Click Here

The other actors do great as well, including co-star Andie MacDowell, supporting actors Chris Elliot (as the cameraman), Brian Doyle-Murray (mayor of the city) Stephen Tobolowsky (old high school associate) and others. The movie was directed by Murray’s cohort in Ghostbusters and Stripes Harold Ramis, which makes me wonder if the role was made for Bill. Production itself is very solid. You won’t find it winning awards for costumes, sets or special effects. At the same time you won’t find any production values detracting from the story; they only serve to enhance it.

This 15th Anniversary Edition will be digitally remastered (overseen by Ramis himself) and will include a host of special features including:

- Commentary by director Harold Ramis (not sure if it’s a new commentary or if it will be the same commentary from the last Special Edition DVD)

- The Study of Groundhogs: A Real Life Look at Marmots

- A Different Day: An Interview with Harold Ramis

- Making of Documentary

- Weight of Time documentary

- Newly discovered deleted scenes

The Weight of Time documentary was in the Special Edition DVD, but aside from that and the commentary this DVD has all new special features. The fact there are deleted scenes on this edition is enough to make me very curious on what we missed.

This movie is a must have. Any Bill Murray fan should be required to see this movie. As far as which version to get I would say the 15th Anniversary Edition, at it is the best bang for your buck. If only they didn’t use such an overly airbrushed picture for the cover. That is about the only thing about this DVD that stinks.

This DVD consists of “The Golden Age of Comedy,” and “When Comedy Was King.” These two full-length documentaries about silent film comedy were created by Robert Youngson in 1957 and 1960, respectively. Some people even say that these movies were largely responsible for the revival of silent film comedy in the 1960’s. In any event, they were an eye-opener at the time of their release, and will still be an eye-opener to anyone not familiar with the Keystone Cops, Charlie Chase, Harry Langdon, Buster Keaton, and the silent films of Laurel & Hardy, particularly their wonderfully clever 1929 short, “Big Business,” which serves as the finale of “When Comedy Was King.”

Buy,Download, Or Stream First Kings of Comedy Collection! Click Here

Although “Golden Age of Comedy” won an Academy Award, ironically it is the sequel, “When Comedy Was King,” that probably is the better of the two. The comedy sequences in each film are all priceless, but the sequel is better arranged and paced, and the narration is quieter and better integrated into the action. Golden Age’s narration was done like the old-fashioned Fox newsreels — a little on the breathless side and a bit shrill to boot. That style is fine for a 5-minute newsreel, but after an hour or so in a feature-length film, it can become grating and annoying.

The print quality of “Golden Age” is flawless. This looks like a pristine new print and may even be from 35mm elements. Most of the comedy sequences are also in superb shape, even though they were already 30-40 years old at the time they were copied for this 1957 documentary. Unfortunately, the “Comedy Was King” transfer appears to have been taken from a 16mm reduction print which also suffers from a fair amount of wear in numerous places, particularly in some of the Keystone sequences. It’s still a very good transfer, especially in the opening Charlie Chase sequence, and it’s certainly an improvement over the various bootleg editions that have been available from time to time, but there’s just no comparison with the print quality of “Golden Age.” Since “Comedy Was King” is the better film, in my opinion, it’s a shame that Genius Entertainment couldn’t locate a better print for the DVD transfer. The audio is fine on both films, and the music soundtracks, particularly the one for “Comedy Was King,” are tremendous.

Buy,Download, Or Stream First Kings of Comedy Collection! Click Here

So for the amazing price of $14, you certainly would be well advised to snap up a copy of this DVD and enjoy every minute of it. Genius Entertainment is to be commended for picking up these two films, which undeservedly languished since their original release, and finally issuing them on DVD.

A trivia note: in 1957, producer Robert Youngson could not find a distributor for “The Golden Age of Comedy”. Every major studio thought he was crazy and no one would touch the film; “Who would want to see that old silent stuff?” was the usual response. So he finally distributed it through the Distributor’s Corporation of America, a bargain-basement indie outfit that also handled Ed Wood’s infamous “Plan 9 From Outer Space.” After the film won an Academy Award, it was picked up by 20th Century Fox, and Youngson was hailed as a genius. Go figure.

I was just a little bit afraid to watch “Golden Age of Comedy” and “When Comedy Was King” again, remembering the yackety, way-too-eager to please narrators and their all but non-stop patter. I also remembered the sometimes deceptive editing of the excerpts, turning slower, occasionally clumsy footage into snappy comedy (it’s probably safe to say that most of Mack Sennett’s comedies never looked as good on their own as they did in Youngson’s documentaries).

However, if there’s a lot of narration, at least it’s informed (William Everson apparently had a hand in “Golden Age”). Watching either or both of these anthologies is an excellent crash course in the history and vocabulary of silent film comedy. “Golden Age” launched the Youngson comedy documentaries and “rediscovered” (and preserved) the great pie fight from Laurel & Hardy’s “Battle of the Century.” The second movie, “When Comedy was King,” built upon the successful elements of the previous film and gave more time to material from the Hal Roach Studios. Both movies succeeded in reviving interest in silent-era comedy, and prompted a further string of documentaries from Youngson, as well as misfire ripoffs like “Fractured Flickers.”

Overall reproduction of both documentaries is pretty good, though “Comedy was King” could have been better. This is particularly galling since Youngson seldom used anything but first-generation source material, and the resulting quality, seen in a good reproduction (or ideally, in a movie theater), is breathtaking.

All griping aside, these movies are a great way to introduce kids to silent film comedy and its superstars. It might not hurt today’s comedy makers to have a look at ‘em too.

Movie Title: Caligula
Average customer review:

Caligula is available for streaming or downloading.

Click Here to Stream or Download Caligula

Caligula, one of the most controversial movies ever made, is now available on DVD. This film was a real eye-opener for me, and the DVD is far superior to the VHS that was floating around a bit in the ’80s (for all you people complaining about the quality, just shudder to think of how it used to be). The story of Rome’s infamous emperor was probably not this wild in real life, but this is Penthouse and as a result is chockablock with sexual scenes and graphic violence. Because Caligula is basically in every single scene, it’s hard for the other characters to develop, but there are some colorful supporting players, and McDowell really delivers. It’s hard to believe his next film was to play the reserved, scholarly H.G. Wells (”Time After Time.”) He is quite a talented actor. The movie drags on and on, and sometimes the cinematography is uncertain, but other times it is dead on the money. The film is a bit grainy on DVD, but as someone else once said, this really contributes to the “gritty” factor. As far as realism, many of the sex scenes look real, but I doubt the world has ever seen the likes of that purple-skinned four-eyed (or was it three-eyed?) woman, plus the guy with all those extra digits and the siamese twins joined at the head resting at Tiberius’ palace. And how about the scene where Caligula “consecrates” that marriage…if that’s how it was, I’d never get married.

The DVD has these things going for it: the creepy music added to the menu (the same as the opening title with the quote from Mark), the 30 chapters nicely divided up, the documentary about the making of featuring Gore Vidal and Bob Guccione (although in places everyone’s face looked way too pale, but it was an old ’70s film), and the sound is far superior to the VHS from what I can remember.

But this is Caligula and I would definitely not let anyone under 18 (or maybe even 21) watch it.

I will concentrate on the movie’s historical accuracy (or its lack of it), since the previous reviews seem to either have overlooked it, or claimed that it is “historically accurate”, or on the opposite extreme, that it totally ignored history.

“Caligula” does have some merit from the historical point of view, surely already present in Gore Vidal’s original script. It’s also very weak in many points.

The bare events of Caligula’s life and reign are actually quite accurate. It may surprise many viewers that most of the secondary characters – Emperor Tiberius, Senator Nerva, the praetorian prefect Macro, Tiberius’s grandson and Caligula’s rival for the succession Gemellus, Caesonia, Chaerea (who murdered Caligula), his sister Drusilla – were all historical and, as far as the facts have come down to us, their portrayal in “Caligula” was fairly accurate, at least according to some ancient authors.

Tiberius did retire to the island of Capri in his last years and did invite the elderly Nerva to join him there, and ancient authors do claim that he indulged in sexual perversions there. Nerva really committed suicide as shown in the movie.

The conversations between Caligula, Nerva and Tiberius, probably by Vidal, really reflect contemporary views and issues – for instance, the deification of Julius Caesar and Augustus, Tiberius’s predecessors: Tiberius was totally cynical about the whole thing, whereas Caligula firmly believed it. Throughout the movie, many of Caligula’s lines come straight from ancient authors.

On the other hand, Nerva’s comment on Caligula’s “gift for logic” seems to owe more to Camus than to ancient sources – still, a nice touch, I thought.

Tiberius’s murder by Caligula and Macro, Caligula’s removal of Macro and Gemellus, his incestuous relationship with Drusilla, her death, his marriage to Caesonia, her giving him a daughter, his increasing tyranny, his farcical invasion of Germany and attempted invasion of Britain, and his murder by his own guard – are all historical facts, and on the whole not too inaccurately shown in the movie.

On the other hand, the movie’s biggest weaknesses from the historical point of view are (1) the way it *looks* and (2) the suggestion that Caligula’s and Tiberius’s depravity were somehow “normal”, part of Rome’s “decadence”.

The sets and clothes all look more like something from a Fellini film than from ancient Rome. Tiberius’s palace on Capri is perhaps the most unrealistic, along with that ship, and the execution machine – and countless details.

The clothes aren’t very realistic, either. Romans were more casual about nudity than we are today, and I suppose that their clothes might reveal much some times. But I doubt that Roman ladies would be as casual about parading half-naked as portrayed in the movie (I mean in normal situations, not the sex scenes).

Moreover, it’s simply not true that “orgies” such as that portrayed in the movie were common among the Roman upper classes. Actually adultery – also on the part of males – was an offense punishable by death, at least for the upper classes (this didn’t cover prostitution). The vast majority of the Roman senatorial class would, and did, find behavior such as that of Tiberius and Caligula scandalous.

However, Caligula’s in cognito wanderings through Rome after Drusilla’s death give perhaps for the first time in a movie a good impression of what ancient Rome actually was at night – dangerous, dark, chaotic, where no person of means would venture without an armed escort.

I also enjoyed the glimpse of what an emperor’s routine largely consisted of, with Tiberius and Caligula stamping their seal onto endless piles of official documents.

“Caligula” was obviously intended to be mainly a pornographic movie – Bob Guccione made sure of that. But it also, at some point, was intended to have a core of historical accuracy, which is why Gore Vidal was asked to write the script.

This core is still present in the movie, and it’s not true that you don’t learn anything of Roman history by watching it.

But of course, I know that that’s not what most people will watch it for. So perhaps Guccione was right.

Spun-off from Animaniacs, ‘Pinky and the Brain’ has a fantastic concept that constantly bears fruit – Two lab mice (”One is a genius, the other insane” in the words of the theme tune) are constantly thwarted in their attempts to take over the world. Like Wile E. Coyote before them, they seem to eventually lose sight of what they are trying to do and why, and just use more and more outlandish ruses to reach their target (Brain as the Country and Western singer is my favourite).

The concept itself may not have worked if the characters weren’t so well written and performed. To my memory there was only ever three continuous characters in the show – Pinky, Brain and occasionally Snowball, a genius hamster and rival to Brain voiced by the late, great Roddy McDowell. With such reliance on a small cast (the rest of the characters featured – the humans – were different every week), the creators worked hard to get them to be well-rounded and likable (although they are essentially villains – at least Brain is anyway). That they came fully formed from Animaniacs is an even higher praise. The use of catchphrases helped make this show highly accessable (”Poit” and “Narf” from Pinky and “Yes!” from Brain as well as the opening exchange.

Elsewhere on this page, the show is described as “mindless fun” – not so. Fun, yes. Mindless, never. This was a show that had Looney Tunes sensibilites but with a brain (literally). Although the writing was hit and miss at times, it was never short of brilliant and the animation was much more consistant than its parent show which sometimes veered into amateurish. The theme tune is one that gets in the head and refuses to budge, and watch out for the definition of a new word in the end credits of every show.

If there is anyone in Hollywood reading this, I suggest a live-action movie version of this – its rife with possibilities! In the meantime, buy this and make the most of a largely forgotten gem of ’90s TV.

As a long time P&B fan I was thrilled to see the series finally coming to DVD. Many fans and would be purchasers have been concerned that this set is labeled as a “collection” of episodes instead of one or more complete “seasons”. Don’t worry! As has been noted in other reviews this set (Vol I) contains ALL of season 1 and most of season 2 (the last three episodes are missing) for a total of 22 episodes. Why did they do this?? I don’t “know” for a fact but I’m sure it is so that they can release 3 volumes of approxiamtely equal size. The show had 65 episodes total. That means 3 volumes each with 22 episodes (OK, so one of the volumes will have 21 episodes – nitpick, why dontcha!). So if you are a fan of the show, cast away your concerns and pick up this first volume ASAP!

For those of you who have never seen the show, expect to be pleasently surprised. This is one of those rare animated shows that appeals to adults and children equally (well maybe not equally, I’m sure I enjoyed watching it on TV more than my kids). The Brain is a super intelligent, meglamaniacal lab mouse intent on taking over the world with schemes that would make Rube Goldberg proud. His sidekick Pinky is affable and kind hearted but somewhat dim wited. Think of them as the animated versions of Laurel & Hardy or Abbott & Costello.

“Fireball 500/ Thunder Alley.” These two movies represent the final two features that Annette Funicello made for the legendary indie American International Pictures. But instead of ending her career kicking around the sand, she found herself covered in dust from NASCAR tracks.

“Fireball 500″ can be considered the last of the Beach Party films since it was directed by William Asher and features Frankie Avalon, Annette and Harvey Lembeck except they aren’t close to their normal surf and sand creations. Lembeck is no longer nutty biker Erik Von Zipper. He’s a Southern bootlegger who also deals in racing. Frankie plays a racecar driver working his way down to Daytona. These are the early days of NASCAR before sponsors made life so much easier for the drivers. So instead of getting cash from Budweiser like Dale Jr., Frankie scores extra bucks by hauling moonshine for Lembeck.

There is a different tone between these films and it’s not merely going from sand to asphalt. You can feel the dividing line between “Fireball 500″ and “How to Stuff A Wild Bikini” during a fight between Frankie and Harvey. Instead of the slapstick mayhem of those early films, “Fireball 500″ shows these two men are out to hurt each other. They’re not aiming at the funnybone. No longer is Lembeck frozen by a touch of the finger. Now there is blood on their lips. Annette doesn’t have too much of a role. This racing movie is not her vehicle.

The same can be said about “Thunder Alley.” Fabian (Frankie’s racing rival in Fireball 500) plays a racer who has a pesky blackout problem as he circles the hardtop. So he tries to make a comeback by being part of a stunt show that features Annette. There’s even a wild party that gets out of control – especially compared with those soda drinking kids on Bikini Beach. Richard Rush directed this final AIP – Annette feature. He’s the same guy who a decade later would give us “The Stunt Man” – one of the cinematic greats about the madness of a movie on location.

Both films come off as a little more hard-edged than an Elvis movie. (And both were made before Elvis roared into the NASCAR circuit with “Speedway.”) But neither is shocking in their portrayals – especially when you consider that a month after “Fireball 500,” AIP would put out Roger Corman’s “The Wild Angels” – a biker film that didn’t flinch in its debauchery and violence. While the films were released a year apart, it seems the films were shot close to each other since they involve the same track in Southern California and the same footage of NASCAR events at Daytona and Darlington.

If there is a major buying point for these films, it is this amazing footage of early NASCAR. Both films feature Richard Petty’s blue 43 as their racer’s car. During that period of time, Petty dominated so the filmmakers were guaranteed that their character’s car would be zipping underneath the checkered flag when they shot the actual race. However this footage also includes a tribute to Johnny Reb complete with his confederate battle flag. So this isn’t the new multi-racial Nextel NASCAR. This is not for the squeamish or those who want to think that this sport wasn’t from hardcore Southerners.

This review is only about “Fireball 500″ (1966), technically the best production to ever come out of “American International”. The cinematography looks as good as the best Hollywood productions from that period; with unexpectedly good shot selection and nice close-ups that you would expect to see now but were highly original back in 1966.

This is a film that should be shown to would-be film and video editors, as there are few finer examples of matching stock footage with first and second unit output; all done by linear editing (try it some time if you want a real challenge). When a low budget film tries to be high budget by inserting stock footage it is usually a disaster, but here there is a pretty good match of film stock and the track announcer’s audio makes the action sequences easy to follow. You might recognize Fred R. Feitshans Jr’s editing style from the old “Adventures in Paradise” television show.

The story is ordinary-straight action adventure and romance, no comedy like AIP’s beach movies even though it does feature alumni Frankie, Annette, and Harvey Lembeck. There are three good Hernrig and Styner songs: “Fireball 500″, “My Way”, and “Turn Around”; sung by Frankie with help on the last one from Julie Parrish. Annette sings “Step Right Up” which mostly leaves you amazed that anyone ever bought her records.

As usual Annette is very buttoned-up and chaste but Parrish is hot enough to carry the whole film. Interestingly Annette pairs up with Fabian and Frankie gets Julie. Fabian also has a group of racetrack groupies who follow him around, four of the them are mid-60’s Playboy centerfolds with one of those the Playmate of the year.

Frankie gets into a serious fight with both Fabian and Lembeck. These are decently staged and cut but unnecessary to the story and rather comical when you consider the participants. Casting these two singers was apparently an attempt to expand the target audience from teenage boys and stock car fans by including something for teenage girls. This was at best a lame idea since by 1966 those two were considered wimpy has-beens compared to “Herman’s Hermits”, let alone the “Beatles” and the “Stones”.

There is tons of interesting stock car footage, making “Fireball 500″ a nice historical archive. Overall it was a fun film to watch but nothing you would take very seriously.

Then again, what do I know? I’m only a child.
