Disney’s The Lion King is finally available on DVD. Considered the cream of the crop of all the Disney animated features by many, it is definitely worth owning. I don’t think I’ll go into the story, which I’m sure most of you know. Chances are you’ve already seen the movie and are just waiting to own it on a piece of media that won’t rot like your VHS tape that probably fell apart by now. Even if Disney released a sub par release of this movie, you’d buy it.
Luckily, this is one of the best releases ever.

Video and Audio is supreme in this release. Especially vibrant is the 5.1 sound. Of all the older Disney releases, this one benefits the most I think, with the powerful music and sound effects present in this release. Hearing James Earl Jones as Mufasa blaring in thunderous 5.1 sound is quite amazing. Likewise the excellent music, such as the opening Circle of Life. Present in this release is the original theatrical version as well as a version with new music/song. I actually didn’t care for the new song, but some may. The extras are quite numerous, contained on a second DVD and are mentioned in Amazon’s product details…I haven’t had the time to go through them yet, so I cannot comment on the extras. I just watched the movie again. To be honest, the movie would be worth it as a single disc release so I’m happy as it is.

Some interesting trivia for some of the people who are not aware of it is that The Lion King seemed to be heavily “influenced” by an old Japanese anime, Kimba The White Lion. Those wishing to see the “similarities” would do well to check out that series as it has also been released on DVD. Carbon copying aside, I do love the Lion King. It still manages to grab you whether you are 4 years old or 40. Two thumbs up!!

After the movie Little Mermaid came out, Disney would make 3 other animated masterpieces: Beauty & the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King, that would change the way we looked at animated films, somthing new, something wonderful. But of all these 4 great animated films, in my opinion The Lion King was the greatest. The music was just, beautiful, and Scar was probably the most EVIL Disney villain the was ever drawn on a piece of paper. You hated him, but you almost liked him, because he was so great. But probably the best part of the movie was Simba’s pal’s Pumbaa and Timon, the BEST Disney characters EVER!!! The scene where Timon was doing the hula, I thought I was going to die from laughing. Anybody from toddler to 10 year old to 60 year from boy to old woman to teenager and so forth will, without a doubt, LOVE this movie, everyone.

It’s interesting another should mention his/her disappointment over the music included for the DVD release of Trouble Man (1972), composed by the legendary Marvin Gaye. The way I understand it Gaye wasn’t pleased with how the music came out for the movie when originally released back in the day, and went back and re-recorded it for the soundtrack album (I got this information from another website)…I’m unsure if this is true or not, but it might explain why the music for the film is different than the actual music on the soundtrack album. Written by John D.F. Black, who worked on a slew of television series (”The Fugitive”, “Hawaii Five-O”, “Mary Tyler Moore”), along with a film or two, most notably Shaft (1971), and directed by Ivan Dixon, who also worked on a great many television series like The Rockford Files” (1974), “Starsky and Hutch” (1975), and “Wonder Woman” (1976), to name a few, Trouble Man stars Robert Hooks (Airport ‘77, Fast-Walking). Also appearing is silky voiced actor Paul Winfield (Damnation Alley, Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan, The Terminator), William Smithers (Deathsport), Paula Kelly (Soylent Green, Uptown Saturday Night), blaxploitation veteran and one time Bond villain Julius Harris (Superfly, Black Caesar, Live and Let Die), Bill Henderson (Cornbread, Earl and Me), and Ralph Waite, whom many 1970s television viewers may recognize as patriarch John Walton Sr., from the series “The Waltons”.

Hooks plays T (Mr. T if you’re nasty), a licensed private investigator (which means he can carry a gun), among other things, who dresses sharply, maintains an office in a pool hall, drives a big, fancy car, and whom people turn to when they have no other recourse and need fast action. An example of this is seen early on when someone comes to T relating how a baby got hurt because of a negligent building owner, and T pays a visit to landlord, played by Gordon Jump (the hapless station manager from the TV show “WKRP in Cincinnati”), and lays it on the line. After their little talk, the hospital bills are taken care of, an apology is made, along with a promise to fix the problems with the building…street law in action…anyway, T is approached by two mid-level hustlers, Chalky Price (Winfield) and Pete Cockrell (Waite), who run various illegal gambling operations, with a problem. Seems some masked men are hitting their games, and they want T to find out whom. T’s price is steep (he seems to have little love for the men, but is willing to take a whole lot of their money), but the men agree, as they know he’ll get the job done. Turns out the hustlers have set up a somewhat elaborate scam, one where they’re going to try and pull a fast hustle on their main rival Big (Harris), setting up T as the fall guy which turns out to be one of those things that sounded good at the time, but now seems like a really bad idea as T is out to settle the score, his way (his way involves some serious beat downs and a whole lot of shooting).

A strong, proud, African American lead character, who is a private investigator type people turn to when they got nowhere else to go, plays both sides of the law, feared and respected by the criminal element, loved by the ladies, consistently hassled by The Man, dresses sharp, plays it cool, and sees things to the end…if this sounds familiar it is because we saw the same thing a year earlier in the film Shaft (1971) which writer John D.F. Black co-wrote with Ernest Tidyman, the latter being the actual author of the novel. In essence, Trouble Man is Shaft in California, substituting Robert Hooks for Richard Roundtree…not that that’s bad, but just not entirely original. While Trouble Man does exhibit many of the qualities of movies within the blaxploitation genre at the time, funky music, dated fashions, sleazy characters, a whole lot of violence, etc., it is missing one, common element in that of female nekidness, but that didn’t bother me as it made up for it in action, copious usage of profanity, and a whole lot of attitude. Actually, while watching the movie, I got the impression the absence of nudity may have been deliberate, a conscious, respectful choice by the filmmakers not to mire themselves in the sleazier aspects of the genre, but rather focus on the strengths, those being strong characters, a solid story, and a good deal of action. Hooks, not really a regular for these types of films, does very well, providing a tough, smart, infinitely cool no nonsense lead, one who uses his head, but isn’t afraid to mix it up when he has to…I thought one scene particularly interesting when T set up a meeting between Big, Chalky, and Pete in the pool hall (neutral ground), and Big’s men show up first to check things out. Big’s main thug, a large man named Preston, seemed fairly antagonistic on arrival, itching for a fight, but T manages to diffuse the situation, allowing for both men to save face, displaying a calm, cool, intelligent demeanor as T shows the other the lack of value in their getting into a brawl, which helped elevate Hooks’ character beyond that of what one would normally expect from a movie like this…I’d credit this to solid writing, but probably more so to Hooks himself, who seemed like a exceptionally good actor, and one with a strong screen presence. All in all I’ve seen better, more memorable blaxploitation films, but not a lot, as this is definitely above the average, and worthy of owning, especially if you’re a fan of the genre.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Trouble Man! Click Here

The film, presented in both fullscreen (1.33:1) and widescreen anamorphic (1.85:1), looks beautiful, blowing away whatever bootleg or copied from TV version you may own (I’m unsure the film has ever seen an official home video release up until now). The audio, presented in Dolby Digital stereo, comes through strong and clear. There aren’t really any extras except for an original theatrical trailer, and a few previews for other films including Man on Fire (2004), The French Connection (1971), and Sugar Hill (1994).

Cookieman108

This movie may not grab you at first, but it’s definitely a 5 star film for this genre. The confusion about the theme song from a previous review comes from the fact that a different mix of the song was used in the movie. There is no one else singing over Marvin Gaye, that’s him singing in his lower register. The version released on the soundtrack features his higher register throughout the song. Check out TrueKnowledgeNation.com for more info on this and other films from that era.

Abrazos, querido Perales. Buen artista y buen hombre!

Don’t let the colorized cover fool you; “Ghost Of Dragstrip Hollow” (1959) is filmed in black and white. The first half of the movie is a teen comedy about drag racing. The twist is that the only ones who race in the movie are two chicks! You know that the movie is set in squaresville when the rival drag-racing gang wears suits and ties. The second half of the movie is a real gas, daddio. The gang can’t raise the bread to keep their old clubhouse, so they’re given an old, haunted house to fix up. These rock and roll ghostbusters drive the ghost out of the house with their swinging costume party. And the lingo the teenagers use in the movie is a blast, man!

I’ve been waiting for “The Ghost In The Invisible Bikini” (1966) to be released on video for years. This is the final film in the Beach Party series. In fact, the only characters from the series to appear in this film were Harvey Lembeck (Eric Von Zipper) and his motorcycle gang, the Rat Pack. The roles intended for Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello were played by Tommy Kirk and Deborah Walley. In addition, instead of surfing and dancing on the beach, they had to settle for having a pool party next to the haunted house. Movie veterans Boris Karloff (Hiram Stokely) and Basil Rathbone (Reginald Ripper) hammed it up for all they were worth. Nancy Sinatra and the Bobby Fuller Four provide the music, while Bobbi Shaw and Quinn O’Hara provide the pulchritude. A gorilla named Monstro, rubber-suited monsters, and a ghost with an invisible bikini (the sexy Susan Hart) are more silly than scary, and keep this colorful motion picture moving at full speed!

The first film,”GHOST OF DRAGSTRIP HOLLOW” is a little slow and corny with square teens hanging out at there local malt shop.

The fun begins when they have a girls pajama party and then go to a spooky old house to have a costume party. And that parrot{the comedy relief} with the punch lines is funny and annoying at times.

The ,”GHOST IN THE INVISIBLE BIKINI” is the better of the 2 films!

Borris Karloff plays a small role but it’s fun seeing Borris in anything. The kids aren’t as square in this film and the Haunted House is kool!!

This film reminds me a lot of the tv show the MONKEES.It would also be fun to watch at your local Drive In theatre on a stormy summer night with the gang ,a few beers and your sweetie on your arm!

Luther Heggs is a mild mannered typesetter just waiting to break out and show the world that he can be a reporter. When the nervous, shy, and loveable bug-eyed reporter wanna be is dared to spend the night in the old haunted Simmons mansion, he feels this is his chance. There are a lot of strange things that happen in this old house. People recount of hearing creepy organ music wondering if the unsolved murder victim is haunting the old house. The newspaper editor thinks it is a wonderful idea, and decides to give Luther the chance he has been dreaming about since the anniversary of the murder/suicide is approaching. When Luther spends the fated night, he barely makes it past midnight tearing from the house spouting tales of a ghost playing the organ, shears embedded in a portrait, and secret passage ways. When Luther tries to prove the events he experienced in the house, he ends up looking like a fool when they cannot be recreated. As he solves the mystery, he takes the whole audience along for the ride.

Don Knotts is superb in this movie! His physical comedic skills could not be done any better. The supporting cast brought together for this film was very well cast. Some of the cast members will also be familiar to those that have followed Knotts career with Andy Griffith.

I first saw this Don Knotts comedy back in the late Sixties…and it stuck with me. (Especially the tune the organ plays.) The scenes of nervous, bungling, bug-eyed Don Knotts made me laugh out loud then — and they still do now. So I was really pleased when this movie was finally released on video a few years ago. My only gripe now is that I wish it were out on DVD because I’m sure I’ll wear out my video before too long!

Of course, I’m a big fan of the Andy Griffith Show. So that probably explains why I like this movie so much. Don Knotts was largely responsible for making that show the huge hit that it was. And, if you like his schtick on Griffith, you’ll like this movie.

In fact, there are about a half dozen or more actors who appear in the movie — most just briefly — who also worked with Knotts on the Andy Griffth Show. Hal Smith, Ellen Corby, Hope Summers, Burt Mustin and Rita Shaw to name just five. So it was fun to pick out the familiar faces. The movie was even written by two of the Andy Griffith Show’s most prolific writers!

Knotts has the nervous man character down so well that some scenes in the film are almost painful to watch (like when he’s giving his speech — “I’ve been called brave. What is brave? Let me clarify this” — before the picnic crowd gathered in his honor), but I can’t help myself. He’s funny.

I won’t go into the plot because so many others have already reviewed it. I just wanted to add my two cents (and Five Stars) to the other reviews.

The bottom line: this is a fun movie, great for the whole family. If you haven’t seen it, please do so. Sure it’s corny. Sure it looks dated. But it’s not supposed to be Citizen Kane. It’s just a great popcorn movie to share with friends and family.

Brilliantly directed by Christopher Nolan, who also wrote the screenplay based on a short story by his brother, Jonathan Nolan, this film had to be a huge challenge for all. The word “memento” means “remember” in Latin, and the story is about Leonard, so traumatized by a blow to the head after his wife’s rape and murder, that he has lost his short-term memory. He’s out for revenge and is looking for the killer, but, although he remembers his life with his wife and who he is, he cannot remember anything that has happened since. He therefore takes Polaroid shots of everyone he meets and writes notes on them. And he also tattoos things he wants to remember all over his body. The role calls out for an exceptional actor and Guy Pearce certainly does rise to the occasion. I found myself drawn to him, identifying with his condition, and joining him in his struggle to relate to the world.

The story unfolds backwards, an unusual narrative technique that is tricky to use. We see a scene and think we understand. And then there is another scene that has happened prior to it, and it totally changes our perception of what is going on. Purposely, it is confusing. And purposely, there are moments of clarity where it all fits together only to become even more confusing in the next scene. Carrie Ann Moss plays a femme fatal and, as we get to know her, we are not quite sure what her motives are. Joe Pantolino is cast as in the role of Leonard’s buddy, and we are constantly confused as to whether he is friend or foe.

I sat there fascinated as this complicated plot unfolded, enjoying the mastery in which the director led me down different avenues of thought and also introduced questions about the moral issues involved. By the end, I was absolutely sure of nothing at all, except that I had been traveling on a roller coaster of an experience that didn’t have any easy answers. While I tend to want films to have a beginning, middle and end, and a story line that is easy to follow, this an exception to the rule. I definitely recommend to those who are willing to explore this unique film, which is certainly one of a kind.

The only film that I can think of that comes even close to the ingenuity of Memento is The Usual Suspects. Like that way underappreciated classic, Memento gives you the ending immediately, and then spends the rest of its time showing you how it got there. Each scene offers clues and various revelations–Leonard’s tattoos, why he writes what he does on Natalie’s and Teddy’s pictures, what happened to his wife, Leonard’s job before “the incident”–each of which are thrilling mini-narratives in themselves.

The acting is first rate. Guy Pearce, best known as “the one who wasn’t Russell Crowe in L.A. Confidential”, is Leonard, a character who will intrigue you, engage your sympathy, and might even scare you by the end. Joe Pantoliano’s Teddy will have you debating his intentions towards Leonard for days afterwards. The real acting coup, however, is fellow Matrix alum Carrie Anne Moss–her performace as Natalie will make you love her, hate her, and make you fiercely protective of her.

The movie can only be watched on DVD. Keep the remote handy as you’ll want to pause every now and then, if only to read Leonard’s tattoos for various clues. After watching the movie, be sure to check out Otnemem in the Special Features section for newspaper articles, pictures, journal entries, and psychiatric reports on Mementos intriguing characters. They will help confirm what you think happened in the movie. DVD also offers the playful option of choosing to watch the movie backwards (or would it be watching the movie forward?). You will definitely consider the option after watching the movie. I haven’t done it yet, but I can’t wait to see the effect that it has on the movie.

This movie is worth the critical hype. If you enjoyed movies like The Sixth Sense, The Matrix, The Usual Suspects, Seven, Fight Club, and Dark City (some of my personal faves), then Memento will be the crown of your DVD collection!

I admire Crash for trying to tackle a tough issue like racism. I feel that more movies should try and take on such social issues. But Crash does so in such an unrealistic and untruthful way that it is impossible to take seriously or learn anything from.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Crash! Click Here

Below is part of Erik Lundegaard’s article for msnbc.com. I obviously did not write it, but I agree with it 100% and could not have said it better myself:

Buy,Download, Or Stream Crash! Click Here

This is the worst best picture winner since “The Greatest Show on Earth” in 1952. It may be worse than that. “Greatest Show” was a dull, bloated romance set against the backdrop of a three-ring circus but at least it didn’t pretend to be important. “Crash” thinks it’s important. “Crash” thinks it’s saying something bold about racism in America.

But what is it saying?

That we all bear some form of racism. That we all “stereotype” other races. That, when pressured, racist sentiments spill out of us as easily as escaped air.

Here’s my take. Yes, we all bear some form of racism – that’s obvious. Yes, we all “stereotype” other races in some fashion – that’s obvious. (Particularly obvious in the Los Angeles of “Crash,” where so many characters are stereotypes.) But, no, we don’t easily give voice to our racist sentiments. And that’s why “Crash” rings so false.

Last month I wrote an article on the best picture nominees (called “Anything But `Crash’”) in which I talked about how the most potent form of racism in this country is no longer overt but covert. Once upon a time, yes yes yes, it was overt, which is another reason why “Crash” sucks. It’s doing what simple-minded generals do: It’s fighting the last war.

The “Crash” quiz

Here, let’s take a little quiz. Say you’re an Asian woman who has just rear-ended the car in front of you. What do you do? Do you…

Wait in your car until a police officer arrives

Exchange licenses with the driver of the other car

Notice that the driver of the other car is someone who looks like Jennifer Esposito, immediately assume she’s Mexican-American (as opposed to, say, Italian-American), and then tell the African-American police officer that “Mexicans no know how to drive.”

How about this one? You’re talking to a bureaucrat on the phone about getting extra care for your father who is having trouble urinating, and she is not helpful. You ask for her name and she tells you: Shaniqua Johnson. You still need her help. What do you say?

“Shaniqua. That’s a beautiful name.”

“Shaniqua. You could do a better job of helping my father, who is in pain.

“Shaniqua. Big f—ing surprise that is.”

One last one. You’ve just been told by your hot, hot girlfriend, with whom you’re lucky to be sleeping in the first place, that she is not Mexican as you presumed; that her mother is from Puerto Rico and her father is from El Salvador. What do you say?

“I’m sorry, honey. I’m surprised I didn’t know that. Now come back to bed.”

“Really? How did they meet?”

“Who took [all Latinos] and taught them to park their cars on their lawns?”

And on and on and on. Every scene. Put a little pressure on somebody and they blurt simplistic racist sentiments. Right in the face of someone of that race.

Worse, none of it feels like sentiments these characters would actually say. It feels like sentiments writer/director Paul Haggis imposed upon them to make his grand, dull point about racism, when a more telling point about racism might have emerged if he’d just let them be. “Crash” is like a Creative Writing 101 demonstration of what not to do as a writer. To the Academy this meant two things: Best screenplay and best picture.

The Sandra Bullock/Ludacris scene

A few readers objected to my column last month – and will no doubt object to this one. They felt “Crash” taught them something important about race. More’s the pity. They said they learned that even good people do bad things, and even bad people have moments of compassion. Sorry they didn’t already know this. They felt like “Crash” was a movie the average person could support. “Average,” I guess, is the key word here.

Some agreed with me that the most potent form of racism today is covert rather than overt; but they added that this was a movie, after all, not a book, and in a movie you can’t show characters thinking.

Ah, but you can. Paul Haggis even did it in “Crash” – in the scene where Sandra Bullock’s character grabs her husband’s arm as two black men approach. Her move toward her husband is silent and instinctive, and Ludacris’ character suspects she does what she does because he’s black, and she’s scared of him, but he has no evidence. We only get the evidence later, from her, when she argues with her husband about the Latino locksmith. And even this scene is handled ineptly. She should have argued with her husband upstairs, away from the help. But Haggis wanted her to complain about the Latino locksmith within earshot of the Latino locksmith – because apparently that’s how we all do it. Lord knows if I don’t trust someone because of their race and/or class I raise my objection within earshot of them. Doesn’t everyone?

The main point is that you can dramatize our more covert forms of racism. But here’s how bad “Crash” is. Even though the Bullock/Ludacris scene is one of the more realistic scenes in the movie, it is still monumentally simplistic. I have a white female friend who lives close to the downtown area of her city. Usually she walks home from downtown. If she does this after dark, and two men are walking towards her, she’ll cross to the other side of the street to avoid them. But if the two men are black? She won’t do this, because she’s afraid of appearing racist. That’s how much of a conundrum race is in this country. “Crash” didn’t begin to scratch that surface.

Losing Jim

So why did it win?

There are rumors that older Academy members shied away from even viewing “Brokeback Mountain” for the usual homophobic reasons. Lionsgate also pushed “Crash” on Academy voters; it handed out a record number of DVDs and advertised heavily. I don’t know which explanation bothers me more. All I know is I feel sick. It feels like the ‘72 Olympic basketball finals, when the Russians cheated and won; it feels like the ‘85 World Series when a blown call in game six tilted the balance towards the Royals. It feels like the good guys wuz robbed.

My friend Jim is more interested in the Academy than anyone I know who isn’t involved in the industry. (He’s a chauffeur in Seattle.) By early summer he’s already talking up possible nominees. The discussion reaches a fever pitch in November and December when the prestige pictures are rolled out and critics make their “best of” announcements. He goes to see these films. He talks about them. He actually cares.

Not anymore.

“Crash’s” win did him in. The Academy, he said afterwards, “is not a serious body of voters who vote rationally. If they’re influenced by a DVD sales pitch, they’re not worth my time.”

Are they worth anyone’s time? Once again, they showed themselves susceptible to something other than a legitimate search for “the best.” Once again, marketing appears to have won. The Academy is 78 years old and acting every bit of it, and last night they took another doddering step towards irrelevancy.

This movie was an over acted melodramatic exercise in hollywood self stroking. plotlines were predictable, and all but one characters were lacking in humanity. By the middle of the movie I was praying for some on to nuke LA so I wouldn’t have to suffer through the rest of this pretentious piece of garbage. The only reason it won oscars was because it was the only nominee accually filmed in LA, and everyone knows hollywood love to stroke itself(SEE WE STILL MAKE THE BEST)even though most of the best movies of the past several years have been made elsewhere

Powerful

Amos Lassen

It is not very often that a movie is widely spoken about before it is seen by the general public. “Praying with Lior” (First Run Features) has been garnering praise for quite awhile now and if I had not heard about it around two months ago, I probably would not be aware as to what a powerful film it is. I received an email from Rabbi Eugene Levy of Temple Bnai Israel in Little Rock, Arkansas asking me if I had heard of the film. I had not but the very next day I got a pres release from Kelly Hargraves at First Run Films telling me that they had acquired the release rights. By this time I was really curious so I wrote Kelly and asked her to send me a screener. I received no reply so I waited a couple of weeks and wrote again. On January 1, 2008, Kelly wrote to me to tell me that the film was to be released for theatrical showings and the DVD release was some time in the future. She wanted to know if I had places to put my review and of course I did and the film was on its way to me. I am proud to say that all of the advance hype is honest and the movie is quite an experience, one that no one should miss. “Variety” hailed the film as “crowd pleasing…so interesting…so intimate and involving”. It is also engrossing,” wrenching and tender”.

“Praying with Lior” is a documentary that introduces Lior Leibling or as he is also called “the little rebbe”. Lior has Down syndrome and he has spent his whole life praying. Many feel he is a spiritual genius while others feel that he is a “vessel that contains everyone’s unfilled wishes and expectations”. Lior’s mother died when he was only six but her words still hover over him. The dichotomy we see here is that everyone who knows Lior knows that he is close to G-d but Lior is also a burden, an embarrassment, a best friend and an inspiration. Each of his family members has an opinion of him. When Lior begins to get close to Bar Mitzvah age, we hear from various people who provide us with some insight about him. It is at this point that the movie presents some difficult questions such as who really talks to G-d and what is a disability. The aim of the movie is to look at and change the way people with disabilities are regarded and received by communities of faith.

The society in which we live adores perfection. Individuals with cognitive and physical disabilities are dismissed and discriminated against almost everywhere. The faith communities should be the places where they should be most welcomed and from where the most comfort should be derived but they do not necessarily accept them with open arms. The film attempts to bring about change in the way the individual is valued by society and the story of Lior suits that purpose well because it shows that every person can make some kind of contribution regardless of how special he is. Lior shows us that his presence enhances everyone else’s religious experience and as wonderful as Lior’s Bar Mitzvah was for him, it was also wonderful for everyone else.

Everyone and every community has the right to grow and connect spiritually as well as to reach the highest level of potential and this will happen when faith communities are open to all individuals. The impact of Lior’s spirituality shows just this. “Praying with Lior” looks deeply at faith in the real world omitting the concepts of proselytization and condecesension. Lior, who is a rabbi’s son, is considered to be a spiritual genius, His prayer is powerful and he professes a close connection with G-d.

Ilana Trachtman, the director of this amazing film manages to capture the family dynamic of Lior’s family where he is not the only intriguing person. Lior’s mother, like his father was a rabbi but she died of cancer when Lior was 6. His father remarried and presented to Lior and his three siblings a new mother who was dedicated to the children. Lior’s older sister is in college, his brother, Yoni, who is in high school says he is Lior’s best friend. The youngest child, Ben, does not appear. Lior is very special, He may have Down syndrome but he functions at an exceptional level and seems very intelligent for his age. But he is also stubborn and has a speech defect. What really makes him special is his love “to daven”, to pray. He seems to feel G-d all around himself but will not answer questions about it. His brother states, “I don’t know if there is a G-d, but if there is, Lior is closer to Him than anyone I know”.

We witness Lior as he makes preparations for his Bar Mitzvah. Three hundred people attend the ceremony and Lior really gives them something to see. His name means “my light” and to those who know and love him, that is just what Lior is. It seems as if Lior has prepared for this day during all of his thirteen years. His dad, Mordechai, noticed that when Lior was only three that he had a special talent for prayer. He wanted every day to be Shabbat because he loved the Sabbath so much. His parents were surprised at their son’s spirituality.

Lior has Down syndrome but it is not what defines him. It is his special sense of faith that makes Lior so special. His life is the sum of the values of heart and soul in a culture where “accomplishments of the mind are usually valued above all else”.

We have a film which was inspired by the prayers of a disabled child and how his impact on the community, in turn, inspired a campaign for social justice. Lior is not a fully integrated member of his religious community but, rather, he is celebrated as a spiritual genius because of the way he prays.” Praying with Lior” is a unique experience–it breaks and warms the heart at the same time. In the film, Lior creates an answer to the wish of his late mother by making a place for himself in his community and thereby becomes an example for all of us. The movie challenges our beliefs about who speaks to G-d while it illuminates Lior’s beautiful spirituality, his place in the community and his family’s journey toward healing. What a beautiful and powerful film!

I wanted to see this movie because I have a child with Down Syndrome and I am Jewish. In the end it was a story of a family and of love. I strongly recommend it for all.

The original theatrical release of Sugar was rated R, as is the Blu-ray version. Sadly, the standard DVD version has been censored in order to get a PG-13 rating. It is not obvious in the Amazon listing that the standard version has been modified, so beware. Buy the Blu-ray version if you want to see the film as originally released.

Sugar was beautiful, heart-felt, and realistic. I loved the flow of the movie, showing Miguel “Sugar” Santos’ journey, from his days in Dominican Republic to the US. It felt I was watching an actual documentary. You’ll see him struggling with the language barrier, finding his own identity as a person while traveling in the U.S., being a “product” for the Minor Baseball League. Compelling and it’ll make you wonder how the Major/Minor Baseball Leagues recruit these players, understanding the process of choosing certain players AND the politics behind it.

Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are fantastic once again with the story-telling, dialogue and the care with research (back stories of real life ballplayers) to tell this story so perfectly. And the lead actor, Algenis Perez Soto was impressive, considering this was his 1st acting role. I highly recommended this movie!!

I loved being a dad back in the 1980s. Life after school was immensely pleasurable and easy to do. I got the kids home (I worked at home, and still do) so that was my job. Got the snacks ready. The turned on the television and took a little break with the kids. After all, we all deserved it.

The familiar music came on, we saw the duck tails wiggling as they strode along, and we were all off on our latest adventure with Uncle Scrooge and the boys. Man, those were the days. Back then there was nothing like DUCKTALES on television. It was Disney’s first foray into the animated television market with a series like that, and it became a model for a lot of other Disney products as well as other cartoon companies.

The show ran from 1987 to 1990 and lasted 100 episodes. Besides Uncle Scrooge, Donald Duck, and Huey, Dewey, and Louie, the series also gave us other stalwarts from Carl Barker’s iconic comics such as Gyro Gearloose, Goldie O’Gilt, Flintheart Glomgold, Ma Beagle and the Beagle Boys, Magica DeSpell, and Black Pete.

New characters were also added as the television series progressed. Uncle Scrooge’s adopted grandniece Webbigail “Webby” Vanderquack, Launchpad McQuack, Mrs. Beakley, and Duckworth.

There was magic in those shows. In one episode, Uncle Scrooge and the boys could be off on an Indiana Jones-style adventure and in a science fiction story in the next. The barometer for their adventures swung from mythology-based (”The Golden Fleecing”) to literature-based (”Duck In The Iron Mask”) to movie-based with a twist (”Duck to the Future”) to history-based (”The Uncrashable Hindentanic”).

For thirty minutes, the kids and I would sit totally mesmerized by the story and our favorite characters. There was real drama, suspense, and laughs to die for. And Huey, Dewey, and Louie always triumphed over the bad guys even though Uncle Scrooge didn’t always get the treasure.

The Season 3 DVD release is chockfull of goodness. Thankfully, I have a 10-year-old who hasn’t seen them and can sit down with him and enjoy the episodes all over again. He’s still living his childhood, but I use him as the excuse to relive mine.

There are 24 episodes in this latest release, but that includes two five-part serials that were originally broadcast over a week of showing to keep everybody in suspense. And, yes, it worked.

This series is absolutely one of the best Disney or anyone else has ever conceived of or produced. If this is your first time through the cartoons, my congratulations because you’ve got hours of entertainment ahead of you. And if you, like me, love this show, make excuses to put yourself back in front of the television and get ready for some real entertainment and a return to greatness.

I’m happy Disney has been releasing the old shows I used to watch as a kid. This review is for the DVD set and not the show. This set has three discs in slim cases with 8 episodes on each for a total of 24 episodes. There are no special features, just some sneak peaks of movies and the episodes have english and french subtitles.

The audio sounded great and the music is really good but the picture was somewhat deteriorated from what I’ve watched. There are noticeable white specks and lines that quickly appear and disappear through the course of an episode. I guess they didn’t keep the original copies in a safe place. It makes the show look older than it actually is.

Still overall it is a great show that I would rate five stars and if you have young kids in elementary school I would definitely recommend buying this show for them to watch. It is much better than most of the stuff on TV for kids today. I also recommend DuckTales The Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp.

Here’s a list of the episodes:
