In 480BCE 300 Spartan Hoplites held a pass for the better part of 3 days against a Persian force that may have numbered over 200,000 men. The Spartans were aided by around 7,000 coalition troops during the first 2 days. However, they were dismissed on the 3rd day. The Spartans, their Helots and the Thespians allies died to a last man. It was one of the most gallant stands in all of military history.

To this day there is an inscription on the funeral mound @ Thermopylae that serves as a memorial to their sacrifice. An English translation is as follows:

GO TELL THE SPARTANS, STRANGER PASSING BY
THAT HERE OBEDIENT TO THEIR LAWS WE LIE.

The title of this movie is an allusion to Thermopylae. However, the film itself is about the earliest days of Vietnam. It recounts a time not long after the fall of Dien Bien Pu; an epoch when the U.S. did not have a commitment of a significant number of troops. During the period covered in this movie all that we had over there were a handful of military advisors.

The film details an obscure event at a Vietnam village known as Muc Wa. Although the battle itself will not likely even find its way into the footnotes of history, it nevertheless serves as an excellent “premonition” of what was to come. It narrates how much the U.S. underestimated the fighting prowess and resolve of the Viet Cong. In fact, Muc Wa can be said to be a microcosm of how the entire Vietnam War went for the United States.

The cast of the film is fairly impressive. The lead is taken by Burt Lancaster who portrays a Major who is asked to do the impossible with almost no resources at all. A very young Marc Singer plays his XO. Craig Wasson (best known for his leading role in Brian Depalma’s BODY DOUBLE) plays a shy young corporal.

This is a terrific Vietnam movie that encapsulates just about everything that went wrong for the U.S. in the ill-fated conflict. It’s a must see for all who seek to learn and understand the facts of the early stages and how it all went downhill from there.

This is one of the best war movies ever made, even though there are few battle scenes and the focus is on circumstances and personalities. The setting is southern Vietnam in 1964, before large numbers of American ground troops were committed. The Americans were still in an “advisory” and support role, although they were already fighting and dying.
Burt Lancaster is superb as a hardened major trying to keep a handle on a senseless situation. His explanation of why he is still a major after so many years is one of the classic scenes in all of film. He deadpans a hilarious scene very well as he describes an incident with the wife of a superior.
All of the absurdity of the American involvement in Vietnam appears in the movie. Ordered to garrison a useless post against his wishes, Lancaster complies and then the post is abandoned, leaving the troops to fight their way out and back to base. An extended family of Viet Cong sympathizers are found and befriended, over the objections of the experienced American and Vietnamese troops. The naïve Americans talk about “winning the hearts and minds” only to be proven wrong.
This is very likely the most historically accurate movie about the Vietnam war ever made. “Civilian” VietCong soldiers fighting and dying, the bribing of opulent Vietnamese officers to get them to fight what is their war and frustration at the pointless policies combine with superb performances to make it one of the best “historical” movies ever made.

The worldwide success of Christopher Nolan’s “Batman Begins” has prompted Warner Bros. to finally release Tim Burton’s 1989 “Batman” with an extra disc of special features…and this is an event worth cheering about!

Buy,Download, Or Stream Batman! Click Here

A groundbreaking cinematic achievement (and one of the most expensive films ever produced, to that time), “Batman” was a tremendous gamble, and the story behind the ten-year struggle to bring it to the screen is fascinating! It is a tale of visionaries, beginning with Michael Uslan, a young student/Batman fan, who not only convinced his university to include comics in their curriculum, but, fired up by Richard Donner’s “Superman”, knew a Batman film could be just as powerful, and took the idea, with Batman creator Bob Kane’s blessing, to Hollywood; of Peter Gruber and Jon Peters, who listened to Uslan, after every studio had passed on it, saw the potential, and decided to gamble; of Sam Hamm, who had a “Batman” script in his head, praying to get the chance to write it; and, most importantly, of Tim Burton, whose dark, quirky sensibilities made him THE director to film it, despite only two feature films to his credit.

This remarkable story, with archival footage and new interviews, is the highlight of disc two, but there is much, much more! Did you know that Robin was scripted to make an appearance in the first film? That Sean Young, not Kim Basinger, had been cast as Vicki Vale? That the Batmobile, designed by Oscar-winner Anton Furst, could actually do 95 mph (and that Tim Burton drove it, once?) That the room where disfigured Jack Nicholson received his unsuccessful plastic surgery was actually a studio prop room? Each chapter is a revelation!

Buy,Download, Or Stream Batman! Click Here

Not that there aren’t a few disappointments in the presentation; there is no chapter with deleted scenes (although a few moments are shown that never made it into the finished film…a little girl, seeing Batman, asks, in all seriousness, “Is it Halloween?”, which causes him to pause, and grin); the ‘History’ of Batman, despite a wealth of photos and clips from the comics, serials, and graphic novels, does not offer a single visual from the campy 60s TV series (whether this was a refusal by 20th Century Fox, who produced the series, to permit their use, or an attempt to distance the movie from the “ZAP! BAM! POW!” silliness is not explained). Also, the brief appearance of screen legend Jack Palance, as ‘Boss Grissom’, is largely ignored, other than in Tim Burton’s audio commentary, which is surprising. Still, many of the cast share their memories (Billy Dee Williams still expresses disappointment that he didn’t get to play ‘Two-Face’; Robert Wuhl, regret that after they rewrote his death scene to allow his character to survive, he never appeared in another film in the franchise).

I guess what I’m saying, is…chuck your old copy of “Batman”, and replace it with THIS one!

You’ll be glad you did!

This film proved to the world that comic book films could be much more than action-packed carnage festivals. This film (and the first sequel “Batman Returns”) have so much more to it than that. “Batman” is a gripping and very moving exploration of the psyche; it peers into the souls of not only the Dark Knight, but also those of the people whose lives he changes with his presence. The film is brilliantly acted by its perfectly-chosen cast, which includes Jack Nicholson (the Joker), Michael Keaton (the Batman), Kim Basinger (Vicki Vale), Micheal Gough (Alfred Pennyworth), and Robert Wuhl (Alexander Knox). Tim Burton makes perfect use of his wonderful directorial talents, Anton Furst designs a gothic, beautiful Gotham City, and Danny Elfman’s classic musical score further help make this a unique, thought-provoking, and very powerful modern classic, a masterpiece of film noir and grand opera. “Batman Returns shares these wonderful qualities, but, sadly, Joel Schumacher’s “Batman Forever” and “Batman and Robin” lose all of that depth and meaning, and become little more than standard mindless action. But, we’ll always have Burton’s dark vision of a haunted and brooding Batman.

The adventures of Mini Goddess has got to be the cutest piece of anime out. Basically, the episodes are approx. 5 minutes each allowing our cute little Goddesses to go on all kinds of adventures. The Urd files is the 3rd DVD in the series and contains episodes 25-36. A Better description of this wonderful anime show would probably be it’s like the Muppet Babies only 1000 times better. So do yourself a favor and purchase all three, currently available, DVD’s of this fantastically cute Anime series. You won’t regret it:) You can also be like me and pace back & forth, while waiting patiently for the release of The Adventures of Mini Goddess-The Skuld Files:)

Those who’ve seen the first two mini goddess DVDs will enjoy this, however you’ll notice a few changes. During the opening narration that begins each episode, the narration is the same, but what goes on is different. Through out this 20 second scene we see them posing in front of a camera in different outfits, including bathing suits (and Urd in lingerie).

The end credit sequence is also different. The first four episodes have their own unique credit scens, and from episode five and on we come to a new end video with a new song, where we see the goddess doing different activities like playing cards and board games with pieces that look just like them.

And, finally, the episodes themselves are different. Part four is a mood piece completely free of dialoge and humor, with somber music, where Urd spends a rainy traveling to different parts of Tokyo, and then back home where she finds her younger sisters waiting with Gan. Those who are impatiant for laughs will want to fast forward through this one.

The biggest change is the introduction of Marla, a sorcoress with a first class licence and no restrictions. Sometimes backed up by a gang of rat thugs, she acts as the villan here, her goal to make the three goddess’ lives a living hell. She does often become the sorce of comedy relief herself, though, and I think she makes the series much more interesting. This I reccomend.

I own the other SATC collections, so I’m not about to leave my collection unfinished. Particularly with the BEST episode of the entire series ever (beating My Motherboard, Myself from season 4, which, believe me, was no small feat in the excellent series), in American Girl in Paris Part Deux. That episode alone makes this a worthwhile purchase.

The Series wrapped up with many nice surprises. Charlotte’s new passion was not only fitting, but really suited the ‘new’ Charlotte. Miranda’s acceptance of the consequences of her new life were masterfully played by Cynthia Nixon. Catrall…Dear LORD how talented is this woman? Her protrayal of Samantha in the most serious stages of her illness was classic Samantha, but with a vulnerability never seen in this character. (Particularly the Samantha/Smith relationship and it’s very natural development.) And, of course, SJP wraps up the chapter of Carries life in a very acceptable fashion.

The series’ end was handled wonderfully and respectably for all involved (no miracle pregnancy for charlotte, no Carrie’s Wedding). This is fine television at it’s best, and any series fan will have to own this, just on principle alone.

That being said, I agree with the earlier review who said HBO isn’t real ‘user friendly’ when it comes to programming their DVD’s. I’d like to be able to watch one episode after another, but ya gotta keep running back and forth between menus. And, as I said in this episode’s predecessor review…Why only half a season? What???? But, now that you have both parts, it makes it a whole. A pricey whole in relation to the other, full-season-in-one-package wholes, but at least complete.

Now, one gripe I have moreso with this portion of the series was Mikhail Barishnikov’s character. I could never warm up to him, and aside from providing some kinda father figure ‘thing’, I couldn’t see why in the world Carrie would have ever been attracted to him, much less moved to Paris with him! That was the only part I found slightly ‘off’ in an otherwise perfect season.

But, the best twenty minutes of writing happen in the last section of the last episode, and I cannot fathom how any fan of this series or these characters doesn’t require at least 5 hankies to make it through. It’s a wonderful end to a wonderful series.

With the closing of Friends, Frasier and now Sex and the City – we truly are seeing an end to an era.

This last set of episodes seemed a little less on the edge and more like a setup to the last episode. That having been said, I would not have missed them for the world. The creators still did a great job in providing a nice ending to each of the characters’ stories.

I agree with many of the people who posted reviews for Season 5 and Season 6 Parts 1 and 2 – HBO treats the SATC followers very shabby in (1) charging so much for virtually half seasons (2) releasing Season 6 as two separate FULL PRICE sets and (3) providing very little extras in Season 6 Part 1 to compensate for the price.

I must say, I totally enjoy all of the episodes with Michael Patrick King’s commentaries and I wish that he did that for EVERY episode. I also HOPE that they include the special SATC Overview show(s) (2 half hour shows that were really one show) in the Part 2 DVD set. It would also be nice to see the Oprah show with all the girls – but I am sure that will not be on there.

All in all – it was a great 6 years and I will enjoy watching them (uncut – unlike the TBS/TNT versions) forever. It is too bad that broadcast networks cannot take the lead from HBO and BBC and make LIMITED RUN series that have high quality and great stars that know they are only committed for a few years. Imagine the quality that we would enjoy. I strongly urge everyone to purchase every season from 1-6 (Parts 1 AND 2) to complete your collection of one of TV’s best groundbreaking classics (cliche, I know, but true).

The Vengeance of She is a disappointing waste of 90 mins. She starts promising, with the beautiful Carol (Olinka Berova) walking aimlessly, drawn by torturous voices in her head. She meets a phsychiatrist, Dr. Phillip Smith, who for some reason (probably to reach boyfriend status) decides to join the young woman in her quest to nowhere. These two find a lost city where live the immortal ones. Here in the “lost city” King Killikrates is having Carol lured to them to assume the identity of Ayesha. Carol is not SHE or her or Ayesha…whatever. The King and his mystic are just making her or She…….Carol just think that she is SHE. That’s the plot! This happens to be the most convoluded mess to come out of Hammer studios. I usually adore Hammer Productions but this is like a slow death. I’m not really sure I understand why SHE seeks vengeance. If you want to see an interesting tale of beautiful women weilding weapons watch The Viking Queen. Lots more action, and less identity crisis

Look at the rating and that explains it all. I’ve read some reviews where the reviewers went over the relative breast attractions of the starlets, and recommended a different flick because the main gal bared it all (and only because she did) – this is a “G” rated movie.

“Vengence of She” is safe and sanitary, with some fights, a little mature hint of marital dissatisfaction, a woman in her undies swimming, but overall this is a film fit for Disney. Compared to some realistic Disney evening shows of late, it is even a little tame. Fit for Disney means it isn’t going to shock jock, skin flick the audience, and that the acting isn’t going to be too far off base – quiet staid, actually. This movie almost tries to reduce or exclude wild action or hot romance. It’s one of those old movies where nudity was perverse but killing someone in hot blood is okay – although I’d personally watch a naked woman rather than a killing any day.

You have to watch it either because you like the general genre of “She” or you want a fairly sanitary flick to watch when your sanity is pressed by the continuos outrageousness of some more modern shows. I myself have seen some old black and whites which were more interesting, if nothing else because the G-rated acting was more lively. But, since I have a passing interest in the Haggard books made to film, I bought it and watched it. Okay for a casual view and pretty good quality recording.

Fans of Highlander will not be disappointed in this DVD. Here we have the two MacLeods, Duncan and Connor together, sharing so many aspects of their long lives with us. We watch, in superbly done flashbacks, their early years together, the humor, intense and passionate love, loyalty, passion, ethical conundrums, betrayal and tragedy. There is something for everyone – even humour, amidst the heart-breaking angst. And the music is to die for. It is particularly pleasing to see another incredible MacLeod woman – Connor’s Mother.

I found myself laughing and crying at various times throughout the movie. There is no doubt that fans who have a deep knowledge of the Series will particularly enjoy this DVD. But even new viewers will not be disappointed.

This DVD will incorporate a number of scenes from the Workprint and this will flesh out the too short movie release. It is a must for those who have not been able to find another TV show or movie with the high production values, fascinating story concept, rounded characters, history, outstanding musical accompaniment, set design. clothes quality, sword and martial arts skill, tragedy, humor, farce, ethics, full-blooded eroticism, strong female and male characters – in short, Highlander: EndGamecontinues to deliver.

As an actor, Adrian Paul has always had a way of bringing out the best in those around him. This certainly seems to be the case here, with Christophe Lambert turning in an outstanding performance as Connor – a man wracked with guilt and pain. Some of the most intense moments in the film are scenes where Connor says little, but his expression says it all and we feel our hearts breaking. His love for his bonny Heather is one of the great love stories and spans centuries. His recounting of how he once saw his Heather, cutting her hair in order to preserve a part of her for Connor that would never age was heart-wrenching. It is the film’s ability to keep posing these types of questions that delights. What *would* it be like to have a gorgeous lover who never ages – who cannot die…and who loves you so intensely that he promises to watching you age and wither, to care for you and to love you until his own dying day?

Lisa Babuscia is another real find for me. Her story was so tragic – so wasteful. Indeed, there is so much that speaks of wasted opportunities, immature judgments that come back to haunt and to ultimately kill.

Adrian himself turns in an outstanding performance as the ravaged and distraught Duncan. His continuing ability to work through the pain and the constant tragedy that surrounds him continues to inspire. Duncan’s message is one of eternal hope for something better, that evil must be fought no matter the cost, and it is one that he never deviates from. There are a number of scenes in particular where his performance is excellent – in particular, the rooftop scene with Connor, and a harrowing scene with Kate.

Whilst there was a little too much in the way of gore for my taste, I always enjoy a good sword fight and outstanding martial arts – and yes, the martial arts sequence with Donnie Yen, I am reliably informed,is shown at actual speed! It is no technical trick – it really was that fast. Again, full credit to Adrian and Donnie – and F. Braun Ashe who admits that he knew enough to simply get out of the way of these two and let them choreograph and do what they do so well.

‘There can be only one!” New viewers and long time fans will not be disappointed with this welcome addition to the Highlander universe. We have followed the journey of Duncan MacLeod for over six years – this film offers further insights into how painful that continuing journey is, for Duncan himself and those who love him and those who aspire to capture his spirit and his soul.

“Highlander – The Final Dimension” (aka Highlander 3) for all practical purposes should have been the direct follow-up to the original 1986 movie. It practically followed right after the first left off with a relentless New York cop in pursuit of “Russel Nash” (aka Connor MacLeod). In Highlander 3, Connor is also being pursued by a group of ancient [immortal] Mongal warriors led by Mario van Peebles. His band of merry warriors is taken down one by one by our hero Connor, well except one in which Mario dispatches himself for failure. But of course, the van Peebles character kidnaps Connor’s son to use as bait for the final showdown.

For 1994, the special effects in this movie were pretty good. However, there’s never really been a good DVD release of this movie. The OOP version was non-anamorphic with just 2.0 sound. There’s another version coming out on 4.5.05 with no specs listed, let’s hope that this is a brand new disc.

Now this leads me to the eye-rolling, hilarious review by ty7777 below. When ty7777 gives the disc a 1-star review because it’s in widescreen instead of FOOLSCREEN. But then I guess some people are just too ignorant and ill-informed to enjoy film as an art form.

On June 9, 2009, “Shout! Factory” released the third season of one of the best sitcoms ever to come down South Maple Street in Springfield (or any other street in America) — “Father Knows Best”.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Father Knows Best: Season Three! Click Here

After watching the first three discs of this 5-Disc DVD set, I’d have to say that Season 3 is even better than the first two seasons of FKB. But Season 1 and Season 2 are darn good too (even if some of the first-year shows aren’t “uncut”).

I’m not an expert, but it seems to me as though the writing for the third year is a certain degree above the earlier seasons. I haven’t noticed a misfire yet (through Disc 3, that is). These episodes are simply outstanding–every one of them–and I just felt like writing this review to say that.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Father Knows Best: Season Three! Click Here

But the thing that really prompted me to dash to the computer today to write these comments is one particular scene in the episode called “Swiss Family Anderson” (on Disc 3). That episode originally aired on network television over 50 years ago (on January 9, 1957), but it still seems fresh and relevant even today.

The scene in question occurs six minutes into the “Swiss” episode, just as the Anderson family is sitting down to dinner. Jim (Robert Young) begins to tell the rest of the family about how a work colleague of his wants him to take a look at an “island” property and size it up for a possible purchase (at the pretty good price of only $1,500).

What impressed me most about that dining-room scene is the way it was filmed and how it was “choreographed” (so to speak). The first 90 seconds of the scene were shot in one long, continuous take, without the camera moving one inch.

During that long, continuous shot, the family members are talking and filling their dinner plates by passing them around the table until everybody’s got everything they need. It’s like a ballet with the ham and potatoes.

After the camera cuts away from that long take, we get another fairly-lengthy unbroken take from the other side of the dining table, with Betty (Elinor Donahue) providing a very funny moment as she tries to convince “father” to add some more shower heads to the upstairs bathroom — “Nowadays, everyone has two heads! Lots of people have THREE!” [LOL.]

(BTW, I guess perhaps I’m just old-fashioned or out of touch, but I have never seen a shower or bathtub that has had more than one shower head in it. And why in the world would anyone need two or three shower heads anyway? Does Betty plan on taking a shower with two additional people at the same time or something?) ~shrug~

Anyway, I suppose that scene really isn’t anything super-special or unusual (there are probably similar scenes in other FKB episodes, and in other TV series too), but for some reason that scene I just described stood out for me when I watched it (and then rewatched it again right away, because I thought it was very good).

I think it’s a good example of the high quality of this television series. The actors never miss a beat, the dialogue seems natural at all times (and the “shower head” banter was a truly hilarious moment), and the “plate dance” was a nice touch too. I just wonder if the aired version of that scene was Take #1? Or Take #21? :)

As for the other Season-Three episodes I’ve watched thus far, as I mentioned, I haven’t seen a dud in the bunch yet, and this includes “Never In Twain”, “Margaret Hires A Gardener”, “The Great Guy”, “The Family Goes To New York”, and the very touching episode entitled “The Homing Pigeon”.

In addition to the above episodes, this set also contains one of the very best (and surprisingly-exciting) episodes of any TV series I have ever seen. It’s entitled “Short Wave”, and after watching it for the first time, I found myself wanting to immediately watch this excellent, well-acted, and unusual episode again — and I did.

I won’t spoil the plot of “Short Wave”, but if you’ve got this DVD collection and haven’t yet watched that episode — go watch it now. It’s a winner.

The third-season DVD set also has several bonus features (some on each disc), including three complete episodes of the radio version of “Father Knows Best?” (yes, with a question mark at the end of the title).

Plus, there are two full episodes of Robert Young’s short-lived series “Window On Main Street”, which premiered in 1961, shortly after FKB left the air.

These third-season episodes of “Father Knows Best” seem to be complete and unedited too (25+ minutes per show), with the word “uncut” appearing on the back cover of the DVD’s outer slipcase, which is always a nice word to see in print on a TV/DVD package.

I don’t recall having ever seen any of these Season-Three episodes in the past, except for a few minutes of “Man About Town”, which just happened to be the episode that was airing on many ABC-TV affiliates between 1:30 and 2:00 PM on the afternoon of November 22, 1963, when news first broke about President Kennedy being shot by an assassin in Dallas, Texas.

Therefore, almost all of these episodes are brand-new to me. And I can hardly believe how really, really good these shows are. I’ve watched some of them two or three times already….and I haven’t even gotten to Disc 4 yet. :)

But even without having seen the last two discs, I want to stamp the “Father Knows Best: Season Three” DVD set with the following two words:

Positively Recommended!

David Von Pein

June 2009

I’m very glad to see that Season 3 of Father Knows Best will be coming fairly soon. Like the Donna Reed Show, Father Knows Best is a very entertaining family comedy, and I hope they continue with the remaining seasons in short order!

The folks at PBS deserve the gratitude of photography teachers and students everywhere. Taking on subject matter as impossibly broad as photography in 20th Century America? This documentary covers– sometimes comprehensively, sometimes briefly– virtually every important topic germane to the field of study, from Pictorialism to Straight Photography, from fashion to the scientific. Along the way, we are introduced (or reintroduced) to what has been the medium’s most important uses: journalism and documentary. “A Century of Images” is as instructive for the novice as it may be reaffirming to those already familiar with much of the material. Underlying a wealth of historical examples and anecdotes are the two twin themes that raise this effort above the mundane: concern over the ethical issues photographs present, and the effects of mechanically produced images in the post-industrial age on the psyche of our nation. These themes manifest themselves in ways that are often revelatory and moving. One memorable example: the way Edward Curtis’s images of Native Americans are placed into context by a woman who appreciates them, yet yearns for more images that show her people the way they “really were.” Sections on war photography cover WWI, WWII, Vietnam and the Gulf War with compassion, and work as excellent visual aids to discussions on todays situation in Iraq. Another bonus: the section on the transition to a digital age has not yet outlived its usefulness.

Until I was able to buy this fabulous history on DVD, my biggest complaint was that while using the VHS version, I had all kinds of problems locating the various scenes I wanted to pull out to show my photography and visual communication courses at the university where I teach. Now that I can happily locate scenes at will using the DVD menu, I can direct my ire at its few but significant omissions and shortcomings. More on Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Diane Arbus please . . . . they were pretty damned influential.

In no other aspect has the photograph been so impressive as in the documentation of events and in the immortilization of history. To prove a point: the documentary’s first video is of a 1999 display of photographs lost in a massive hurricane. Photos were lined up in a hall and residents had to sort through them to find their lost treasures. Nothing is more lost in a disaster as the loss of old photographs. It is the one connection we have with the past.

I had the opportunity to play this video for a high school photography class one day, watching several chapters twice to allow it to sink in. There were few aspects let out.

Buy,Download, Or Stream American Photography! Click Here

This 160-minute video is divided into three parts: Photography from 1900-1934 (with a lot of pre-1900 history of photography; 1935-1959; and 1960-1999. The last part also discusses photographic alterations and the legal aspect of that trickery.

One realizes after watching this documentary how effective still photographs have been in influencing people and governmental policies, both good and bad. Photographs of murder victims as well as criminals, crime scenes, battle scenes, disaster scenes, historical events such as World War I, the Great Depression, Big City crimes with the mafia, World War II, the Civil Rights Era, Vietnam and anti-war protests, the first photographs of the moon, the Gulf War, and even presidential candidates are featured here. What the viewer gets in this documentary is not just remembering some of these haunting photographs, but also the background story to these photographs. Photographers, former news reporters and editors, even some artists are featured in this work.

Some current students may say this documentary is already ten years outmoded, which it is. Digital photography first became marketable in the late 1990s, and 35mm film was sold profitably until 2004. No mention of Thomas Franklin, the Newark photographer who took the photograph of the firefighters hoisting a dusty, torn flag after the New York Trade Center terrorist act of 2001. But, this is one topic educators could use to continue to theory of still photography.

This documentary should be required viewing for all photography students, but social historians will also find this work quite impressive.

However, the dvd sucks. sucks alot.

Dreamworks put no effort at all into this. let me list the cons

Buy,Download, Or Stream Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence! Click Here

-bland, boring artwork

-no real special features, simply imported from the jap. dvd release

-no english track (how stupid can you be?)

-the subtitle option is quite annoying, implying that the audience must all be deaf because they feel the need to subtitle every little sound you hear… we’re not deaf we just can’t understand japanese!!

its clear that dreamworks simply wanted to put this out as fast as they possiby could to cash in on the hype. it shows simply from the fact that the japanese got their dvd in november.. now how often does an anime come out here 1 month after the japanese release? usually it takes a year.

i bought this because i love the movie, but i wish someone else would have gotten the rights to it. if dreamworks acquires another good anime.. i will cry.

there is no doubt in my mind that within a year or two from now there will be a “special” version that will have REAL special features, better artwork and packaging, and OH MY GOD an english track.

Basically it will be the version that should have been from the get-go.

Screw you dreamworks, you don’t know what the fans want. you’re anime distrubiting ways sicken me. why couldn’t you just let bandai/manga get the rights to this seeing how THEY HAVE THE REST OF THE FRANCHISE UNDER THEIR BELT. bandai would have made this the way it should have been.

I do not know who at Dreamworks was responsible for this travesty of a DVD, but I would like to meet them so that I could tell them in person what a total hash they have made of the best anime (and one of the best films PERIOD) of the year. Never mind the imbecilic cover art (which in no way reflects the breath-taking art in the film) – WHAT is the rationale for HEARING IMPAIRED subtitles?? I always use subtitles – but as so many other people have written, I don’t need to be informed of the sounds in the background. The theatrical release didn’t have such intrusive subtitles – why are they here?!?! And let’s face it – dubbing is not exactly a novelty on ANY foreign DVD: why not make it available here? I can only assume that, as usual, the corporate honchos at Dreamworks didn’t actually SEE this, and handed it off to some hack who got their job because of knowing someBODY, not because they were competant. I will be waiting for Dreamworks (or maybe someone else with more intelligence) to re-release this. In the meantime – DON’T waste your money on THIS DVD – rent it if you want to see it, but DENY Dreamworks any more dough until they get their act together and put out a quality DVD that this film so richly deserves.

The story begins at the end, where we are shown a roadblock of monstrous proportions, and a white 1970 Dodge Challenger rocketing toward it. From there the tale begins, backing up two days to give the rest of the story. An interstate chase is on for the driver of the Challenger, whom we know nothing at all about. As the story unfolds, the identity of the driver is rationed out in flashbacks and news reports, slowly bringing into focus the nature of the character. At first, we naturally assume the driver to be a simple car thief, as does law enforcement. Gradually, we learn that the driver is not a thief at all, he is simply delivering the car. He is a decorated Vietnam veteran who joined the police department after his honorable discharge, married a beautiful girl, and then lost her in a surfing accident. Not long after, he stopped a senior officer from beating and raping a young hippie girl, and was dishonorably discharged from the force. We also learn that his high-octane burn across the desert is to satisfy a simple wager: if he makes it from Denver to San Francisco in less than 15 hours, he doesn’t have to pay for the amphetamines he bought to keep him awake for the trip. He is guided along the way by blind disc jockey “Supersoul” (Cleavon Little), who speaks to the driver (whose name is we learn is Kowalski (no last name given, via the AM radio in the Challenger. Supersoul is Kowalski’s invisible guardian angel, advising him of the cop’s attempts to stop him, at least until some local rednecks bust into the radio station with a storm of rocks and racial epithets and beat Super Soul and his engineer into submission. As Kowalski rockets across the blasted desert landscape, he encounters numerous crackpots and visionaries, all of whom seem to offer another piece to the puzzle that Kowalski’s life has become. From prospectors to faith healers, outlaws to newlywed hijackers, we are given a glimpse into a world that exists far from the beaten track we all travel each day. As Kowalski hurtles toward his date with the destiny that was mapped out for us at the very beginning of the film, each rumor and news report seems to contradict the image of him that is being played out by the police of several states, elevating him to something of a folk hero among a growing legion of fans and supporters.

This movie knocked me out from the very beginning. For those die-hards, yes, there are plenty of car chases and stunts to satisfy most fans of car/action films. But that’s not the whole story, by any measure. For this is the story of one man, not a mythic legend, or even a regional folk hero. Why does he do what he does? He simply has nothing left to lose or gain. How many men returned from Vietnam at least a little disillusioned by the world they came home to? How many have had their lives mapped out neat and pretty, only to have the blind monkey wrench of fate turn their worlds upside down? Here is a man who is perfectly willing to sacrifice his freedom, his safety, and possibly even his life to win what amounts to a ten-dollar bet, at best. When Kowalski finally arrives at the roadblock, the inevitable conclusion to his odyssey, he takes the only road he knows, a path which had been set for him ever since the beginning.

On a cinematic level, the influence of Vanishing Point is far reaching, indeed. The story of a jaded ex-cop who has lost his wife, his hope and, to a degree, his humanity, was taken and nitro-injected in George Miller’s Mad Max (1979) and the Road Warrior (1982), as Max Rockatansky (not too far a reach from Kowalski) has his life violently ripped out from under him, and thus turns to the open road. At first for revenge, but then because it is the only world he can exist in, a place where jungle law prevails. By then, Max is nothing more than a shell, a ghost of a human who haunts the blighted landscape propelled by a hunger not even he can understand. One of the most effective plot devices is that of not giving the protagonist a name until well into the film. Joel Schumaker used this technique very well in his good movie Falling Down (1993), not giving Michael Douglas’ character a name until the final act of the film’s story. By doing this, we are allowed to see the character as a sort of everyman, someone whom we may know, or may even be. We are then free to observe the goings-on at a much more personal level, knowing all too well that the story being played out upon the screen could, given the right circumstances, be any of us, and to that end, possibly even all of us. By the time we learn that the character is someone, it’s too late. They are already a part of us, bound by destiny and experience. Also of note is the using of a disc jockey to provide a running commentary on the nature and exploits of the protagonist (as well as provide a reasonable source for the music in the film), a device used, to lesser effect, in Walter Hill’s The Warriors (1979). Lastly, although film characters have been bumping into oddballs in the desert for years, Abbe Wool’s wonderful Roadside Prophets (1992) stands out as the protagonists wander through the desert, encountering numerous wisdom-dispensing desert dwellers, each contributing their ideas, ideals, and experiences in a way that lends toward a larger collective ideology wherein a greater truth resides.

This is a masterpiece of filmmaking. Do yourself a huge favor and check it out.

After seeing this movie in ‘71, a year before obtaining my driver’s licence, it truly influenced my driving skills and my love for high performance American horse power. Seeing the movie now almost a hundred times over, I know the dialog word for word. This is a cult classic to be shared with those 70’s era Mopar fanatics who too have seen this movie in it’s various cuts at the local driveins. (And attemped to drive just as fast as Kowalski did after they left the drivein). Having the sound track on LP(vinyl) and the movie on VHS, I can revisit my obsession with this film and sound track when ever I feel the need to reassure myself for need of controlled speed. Remember, they used several Challengers during the filming and you can see some of the different cars throughout the film if you have a sharp eye. For those who can fix the frame of the movie just after Kowalski makes impact and someone is spraying water on the wreckage, they can see the the car is a white Camaro. Look at the vent windows on the door frame. Challengers did not have these! For those with a really sharp eye and a large screen can see the Camaro script on the truck lid also. For those newer viewers, sit back and enjoy a pre Dukes of Hazzards true car chase. It doesn’t get any better than this. (Unless we can get it on DVD along with a CD version of the excellant music sound track! Hint, Hint!)
