In the final release of Warner’s Batman the Animated series we get another 28 episdoes of one of the finest animated shows ever created. I would heartily disagree with John Q. Public’s opinion of Anime-style animation and weak voice acting. True the animation was done by Studio Junio and has some Anime influence I would not consider this Anime style at all. John Q. evidently has never seen true Anime before or such a ridiculous statement would never have been made.

Batman was just a great series and far superior to the Batman Beyond and the New Batman series. This is the tough, gritty Batman of Bob Kane although updated for modern times but still great to look at for its art-deco stylings. My favorite episodes on this collection include:

“The Demon’s Quest parts 1 & 2″ Batman must agree to an uneasy alliance with arch-villian Ras Ah Ghul when his daughter Talia and Robin have been kidnapped under similar circumstances.

“Sideshow” Killer Croc escapes on the way to a prison and takes refuge with a circus band of sideshow freaks who aid Croc when Batman comes to find him.

“The Trial” Batman is capture and taken to Arkham Asylum where he is put on trial by most of his arch-foes including The Joker, Twoface, and Poison Ivy.

“Bane” Batman meets Bane, the chemically enhanced killer who would break Batman’s back in the comic book continutiy.

“Harley’s Holiday” harley Quinn is released from Arkham and wants to go straight but ends up stealing Bruce Wayne’s car resulting in a wild chase through Gotham.

“Deep Freeze” mr. Freeze escapes from Arkham with the help from an old billionaire, intent on bringing about a second ice age in the world.

“Showdown” featuring Ras Ah Ghul and a tale of this past where he encounterd the legendary Jonah Hex.

One note is that the series technically changed to the Adventures of Batman & Robin during the last season. No big deal. I wish there would have been a few more extra but this is still a must-have set for Batman fans.

“I Wake Up Screaming” was the first film noir made at 20th Century Fox. Its greatest distinction is its visual style whose low-key lighting and dark shadows would become archetypal of film noir after World War II. Cinematographer Edward Cronjager created a striking early example of “noir” lighting -what John Alton appropriately called “mystery lighting”- in this film made in 1941, before the United States entered the War. The story is based on the novel of the same name by Stephen Fisher, adapted for the screen by Dwight Taylor, who moved the action to New York, gave it a flashback structure, and turned it into one of those hybrids so common in pre-War Hollywood that combines multiple genres: Mystery, romance, musical (the singing scene was cut), comedy, suspense, and psychological drama. But the suspense does dominate.

When model and aspiring actress Vicky Lynn (Carole Landis) is murdered, the police are quick to blame Frankie Christopher (Victor Mature), a fight promoter who met Vicky when she was a waitress, introduced her to all the right people, and managed her ascent to glamour girl -until she left him for Hollywood. Vicky’s down-to-earth sister Jill (Betty Grable) disapproved of her career choice but doesn’t want to believe Frankie responsible for her death. The Assistant District Attorney thinks early on that the creepy switchboard operator (Elisha Cook, Jr.) at the Lynns’ apartment building is the killer, but sadistic police detective Ed Cornell (Laird Cregar) won’t let up on Frankie, constantly harassing and threatening him, leaving Frankie little choice but to find the killer himself.

“I Wake Up Screaming” opens with an eyecatching credit sequence of names in lights sprawled across a dark cityscape. That got my attention. Then we move on to an interrogation room at the police station. Frankie Christopher is harshly lit with one lamp, surrounded by police officers in the shadows. Gorgeous, dramatic, low-key lighting. The faces of some characters, even Frankie, are sometimes completely blacked out. I don’t know if that is due to a film with limited tonal range or if it’s deliberate. But it’s daring. Everywhere we go in the station house, there are bars and shadows. The implication that the characters are trapped as if in a cage is overwhelming. The police station is like a template for film noir aesthetic. This really surprised me in such an early film, but it’s fabulous.

This was Betty Grable’s first non-musical role. She’s all sweetness and goodness, but she is also level-headed, practical, and brave in the mold of a film noir helper-heroine. Unfortunately, every time she appears on screen we hear “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”, which eventually drove me a little nuts. Victor Mature makes a strong and appealing protagonist. But the stand-out performance comes from Laird Cregar as the very creepy, obsessed police detective Cornell. He’s truly unsettling and one of the most memorable noir villains. The dialogue isn’t hard-boiled except for a few lines delivered by Vicky. But “I Wake Up Screaming” is a superb example of the film noir style as it was entering Hollywood’s visual vocabulary.

The DVD (20th Century Fox 2006): A few scenes show some white specks and lines, but this print is generally good. Sound is good. Bonus features: A deleted scene called “Daddy” (4 min), in which Betty Grable sings. This doesn’t fit the tone of the movie well, so it was best left out. “Hot Spot” (text) is a brief account of the film’s title change from “I Wake Up Screaming” to “Hot Spot” and back again. We can watch the opening credits for the film with the “Hot Spot” title (1 min). There are 3 “Still Galleries”: A Poster Gallery (3 posters), a Production Stills Gallery of behind-the-scenes photos (8), and a Unit Photography Gallery of publicity stills (38 photos). It’s interesting to note that scenes are much more brightly lit in the publicity stills than in the movie itself. There is a theatrical trailer (2 min). Film noir historian Eddie Muller delivers a good, nearly constant audio commentary. He compares the screenplay to Steven Fisher’s novel, provides background information for many of the creative crew and actors, discusses the noir visual style and the juxtaposition of light and dark thematic elements in the film. Muller speaks a lot about the people involved in the film, as always. Subtitles for the film are available in English and Spanish.

I Wake Up Screaming (1941) is an excellent, atmospheric, pre – WWII Film Noir classic with Betty Grable, Victor Mature, Carole Landis, Laird Cregar and Elisha Cook, Jr. This under-rated film is a must for lover’s of the genre. The cast is excellent, including Betty Grable who is best known for her Fox musicals. Laird Cregar is memorable in one of his best rolls of his short career, giving a complex and disturbing performance. The ending is a real chiller. Check it out. You won’t be disappointed. I rate this film up there with my other Film Noir favorites: Laura, Gilda, Double Indemnity, Out Of The Past, Woman In The Window and Murder My Sweet…footnote: The original title was Hot Spot, but Zanuck had it changed because as the film was to be released, USA entered WWII and he feared audiences might think it was a war movie. Fox re-made this film in 1953 as Vicki with Jeanne Crain and Jean Peters in the lead roles. However, Richard Boone’s performance does not have the complexity and depth that Cregar brings to the role.

That’s the whole idea of “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian,” a superb sequel to “The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.” While it has a climax that goes on WAY too long, this movie shows us the darker side of C.S. Lewis’ fantastical world — with a heavy dose of Shakespearean villains, political intrigue, and some spectacularly epic battles.

It’s been 1,300 years in Narnia, and the human Telmarines have invaded and driven the native Narnians underground. Aslan hasn’t been seen in centuries.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian! Click Here

And when King Miraz’s (Sergio Castellitto) wife gives birth to a baby boy, his nephew — the rightful heir — becomes an obstacle. Young Prince Caspian (Ben Barnes) flees from his treacherous uncle, and is discovered by a band of Narnians. Along the way, he accidentally ends up summoning the ancient Kings and Queens of Narnia — also known as the Pevensie children, who were waiting at a train station when they were unexpectedly sucked trough a tunnel.

Though initially delighted to have returned to Narnia, the Pevensies are horrified when they find that their once-idyllic land has been nearly destroyed. Caspian has been organizing a ramshackle army of native Narnians, but Peter (William Moseley) finds that fighting an organized, armed force is very different from battling the White Witch. And after a disastrous attack, the Narnians are facing almost certain destruction — but Lucy (Georgie Henley) is convinced that Aslan can somehow save them, and restore the kingdom to Prince Caspian….

“Prince Caspian” is definitely a darker story than its predecessor — good guys die, coups fail, evil machinations succeed, the castles are grimy, some of the good guys turn bad for real, and a bleak, hopeless feeling suffuses much of the movie’s second half. Even our heroes have to deal with their doubts and anger, especially since Aslan is conspicuously absent for 95% of the entire film.

And if the first film was a colorful fantasy adventure, then this one is a military story with all the necessary action trappings — spectacular aerial drops, castle-wide massacres, and a spectacular finale involving a massive pit, tree roots, a river, and catapults. But Adamson also packs in as much violence as a PG-rated movie can contain — while there’s only a few drops of actual gore, there’s plenty of beheadings, shootings and stabbings.

But Narnia itself has lost none of its charm, and Adamson lingers lovingly on the sunlit forests and quiet rivers for as long as he can. And though the story is grim, he sprinkles it with plenty of humor (the bound-and-gagged cat) and fairly snappy dialogue. One of the most spectacular scenes involves a very familiar character speaking from inside a sheet of shimmering ice, as Caspian is dragged into a necromancer’s ritual. It’s really rather creepy.

Problems with the movie? Well, the climactic battle drags on for a LONG time, and every time you think it’ll end, it revs back up. And those masked soldiers are a wee bit too reminiscent of “300’s” Persians.

The four Pevensie actors all do solid jobs, although William Moseley is the standout — Peter is struggling with doubt and a bit of alpha rivalry, especially since he’s used to being Narnia’s top dog. Barnes starts off a little stiffly — come on, where’s the fear when you see your bed turned into a pincushion? — but soon grows into the difficult role of a Hamlet-like prince who is struggling to become both a Narnian friend and a Telmarine king.

But there’s a pretty brilliant supporting cast as well: Castellitto is simply outstanding as the ruthless, icy-cold Miraz, as are Damián Alcázar and Pierfrancesco Favino as his scheming advisors. Warwick Davis does a low-key, malevolent turn as Nikabrik, while Peter Dinklage is the likably brusque, cynical Trumpkin. And Eddie Izzard is top-notch as the mousy swashbuckler Reepicheep — this could have a silly, comic-relief character, but he does end up being both adorable and formidable.

There are going to be two versions of the “Prince Caspian” release in either blu ray or regular versions. The more embellish DVD version basically has the film, plus an extra bonus disc with the stuff you’d expect in such a movie: bloopers, deleted scenes, and a series of featurettes about the making of the movie — previsualization, fight choreography, sets, special effects, and the guys who play the dwarves Trumpkin and Nikabrik. As for the third disk, it’s going to be a downloadable digital version of the movie.

“Prince Caspian” drops the children’s fantasy feeling, in favor of a darker, more militaristic story — especially with all that father-murder stuff. But despite its darker overtones, it never forgets the light side.

In the very slim chance that Disney reads these reviews, I’d like to pile on to other criticisms in the hope that the Dawn Treader doesn’t make the same mistakes. As a huge C.S. Lewis and Narnia fan, I was so disappointed in Caspian. Same reasons as many other reviewers: too many unnecessary liberties taken; little dialogue, so very little way to connect with and enjoy the characters; too grim; etc. At the end of the movie, I felt like I didn’t get to spend any time with the characters b/c most of the movie was some sort of battle.

Sure, there were a few good things. Reepicheep was great; so was the DLF. The scenery and landscapes were beautiful. Some of the battles (or parts of battles) were enjoyable and had a sense of honor and bravery. But that’s about it. Caspian was okay, a little boring. The posturing between Peter and Caspian was silly, as was the flicker of romance between Caspian and Susan. Not enough of Aslan. Not enough of Lucy. No lessons. Nothing anywhere near the charm of Mr. Tumnus.

You know how at the end of some movies (good ones) you have that feeling like you want more of a good thing? You wish the movie would go on and on? (That’s why I ripped through all the Narnia books in the first place.) Well, after watching Caspian, I had a feeling of wanting more of what I knew existed in the book but didn’t come through in the movie…it was a yearning for what could have been instead of what was delivered. It was a huge disappointment and a real shame. And I truly hope the Dawn Treader can deliver what the first movie did, and what the books all do….a real connection to the characters and a reason to start thinking about what it means to believe in something and to stand up for your beliefs. I don’t think that notion is incompatible with making a block-buster of a movie.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film. I found the story chilling and original. It could happen to anybody. My mom was asking me, doesn’t this just encourage criminals/kidnappers to try this sort of thing? A kidnap-ransom that happens in a completely planned out environment and only lasts exactly 24 hours. No one gets hurt, the ransom is a reasonable ($50,000) amount (for a wealthy family). The child is abducted and taken to a faraway location. Joe (played by Kevin Bacon) stays with the mother and explains the house rules. Cheryl (Courtney Love) babysits the husband, and Marvin (Pruitt Vince) watches the child. The house rules are simple. Every 30-minutes the kidnappers contact each other via cellphone to let each other know things are going according to plan. The next morning, the wife is to make arrangements to transfer the money for the husband to pick up. The husband picks up the money and hands it to Cheryl. Marvin brings the child to a rendezvous point where Joe will leave the mother to reunite with her child. Kidnappers disappear. Crime over.

But what if things don’t go according to plan? What if there’s more to it than a simple kidnapping? What if the mother attacks, the father gets feisty and the child has asthma? Will the plan change? You betcha. That’s what makes this film so suspenseful, and I will guarantee that it leaves you on the edge of your seats. Wonderful performances by Charlize Theron, Kevin Bacon, and Dakota Fanning.

This movie left me feeling as if everyone is vulnerable and never truly safe, especially with the amount of information available out there on any individual. Fictional crimes such as the one described in this film become more and more plausible. Watch it as an eye opener.

LEAP rating (each out of 5):
============================
L (Language) – 3 (Chilling performances. Completely suspenseful that it leaves you at the edge of your seat.)
E (Erotica) – 2 (We see some of Theron’s behind. Kevin Bacon is naked in the film. Is there a film where he isn’t?)
A (Action) – 4 (Airplane landing on a highway, crazy doctor taking advantage of his knowledge on paralytic drugs, private parts almost getting cut off…)
P (Plot) – 4 (Highly believable, and well conceived kidnap-ransom plan.)

Recently, I bought Trapped on DVD and enjoyed it. The film featured some strong performances and intensity, but as some of you know did horribly in the box-office. I was really eager to see this film because I almost had a chance of seeing it in theatres, but you know there was a huge difficulty with that.
Anyway, Trapped is based on the novel: 24 Hours, by Greg Iles. To be honest, I didn’t read the book so I can’t give you a great comparison but from seeing the movie, which was good I can bet the book would be even better.
The plot of the film is excellent, with a well conceived/concocted plan, devised by Kevin Bacon and Courtney Love, who are the villans so to speak in the film. Charlize Theron and Stuart Townsend are a happily married couple and have a daughter. Soon, Kevin Bacon’s plan goes into action and he kidnaps her daughter but there’s much more to the kidnapping than you think, for it’s a kidnapping for ransom. Over a 24 hour
period the couple’s money is being extorted into Bacon’s and Love’s hands. After that period is over the child will be relinquished back into the family’s hands. So, the film had a great plot, just perhaps there needs to be a few more developments.
The press didn’t screen the movie for reviews, and the film duration in theatres was only for about two weeks, which is sorry
to say very pitiful, but all in all I liked this film and reading
the book would be something I’d like to try. Trapped is rated R for Violence, Language and Sexual Content. There is a thrilling action sequence at the end of the film, which I personally enjoyed. There is actually some excessive profanity, not throughout the film but at some certain parts, as for the sexuality it’s fairly brief and not explicit. There isn’t any nudity.
Trapped, an interesting thriller, with a plot but just didn’t do well enough to be a great film in the eyes of many. Own it today on Video and DVD.

Lea Salonga in my opinion has one of the most commanding voices on Broadway. She can give life to different types of songs. And in this particular concert, she gets to show the versatility of her voice as she tackled a varied selection of some of her favorite show tunes. Not to mention I have never heard anyone sings so perfectly in a LIVE performance.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Lea Salonga – The Broadway Concert! Click Here

I especially love her subdued, simple, and heartfelt version of I’ve Never Been in Love Before. She captured the essence of the song beautifully. She gets to sing two songs from Flower Drum Song. Her I Enjoy Being a Girl is a total treat as she sang it with such grinding, girlish, playful sassiness. Her Love Look Away is less emotional compared to the FDS cast recording, but this version is more polished and more precise.

One of the highlights of the concert was her rendition of Nothing from A Chorus Line. She dedicated the song to all her detractors early on her career when she was just starting. I love how she gave life and energy to the song, I have never heard that song sung with such vocal precision and vivacious spirit.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Lea Salonga – The Broadway Concert! Click Here

As a treat for Miss Saigon fans, she sang a song from the show that did not make it to the final cut. The song is called Two Much For One Heart. I wonder why the composer decided not to include the song. “I’d give my life my for you” was the emotional core of Kim, “Too much for one heart” could’ve been the vocal showcase core for Kim.

I also like Lea’s take on Where is Love and especially As Long as He Needs Me. Those were powerful renditions that show off her vocal range. She was intense and in command of the song especially the latter. Her Someone to watch over me was also another highlight. She was very effective in capturing the hopeful and romantic and melancholic mood of the song.

The show ended with two great songs, Something Wonderful and Being Alive. As she sung the final note of Being Alive, the light bubs in the stage all lit up to one glorious finale. You just have to see it, it was breathtaking!

Note: The DVD does not contain the entire concert some songs were cut (Another Hundred People, Wouldn’t it be Loverly, Children Will listen, Fallin, On My Own, I Still Believe in Love, and People) probably due to licensing issues or the fact that some of the songs were already released in her other albums. But this is a must buy. I highly recommend this to all her fans and fans of musicals.

Grade: A +

If you love Lea and broadway, you need to own this DVD. From start to finish she is breathtaking. Her phrasing is impeccable with a voice to match. Her version of “Someone To Watch Over Me” in my opinion has never been done so beautifully, and with just a guitar backing her. The San Miguel Philharmonic lead by her brother Gerard is equally wonderful. Bravo Lea!

Movie Title: Andrei Rublev
Average customer review:

Andrei Rublev is available for streaming or downloading.

Click Here to Stream or Download Andrei Rublev

Tarkovsky’s Andre Rublev plows the same ground as Scorsese’s Last Temptation of Christ, but with greater success. No, I haven’t been smoking anything; I’m serious. A collection of metaphorically related vignettes that loosely follows the life of Russia’s great medieval artist, Andrei Rublev is about nothing less than the struggle between mankind’s spiritual and carnal natures. It is also one of the rare films featuring Christianity that neither belittles the faithful nor condescends to them. I’ll take this film over The Robe, The Greatest Story Ever Told or even Ben Hur any day of the week.

All the same, this film is not typical wholesome family entertainment of the Disney variety. It’s more like the cinematic equivalent of broccoli – you may or may not like the flavor, but it’s good for you. There is nudity. There is violence. If you’re an animal lover, it may give you nightmares (at least two horses and one cow probably died in the process of filming). But you know, the Bible itself is full of plenty of that kind of stuff. What makes it palatable is the moral context – the material is in service of an authentically moving spiritual journey. The film may not shy away from the ugliness of medieval Russian peasant life, but it also does not shy away from the message of redemption through grace – and I’m not referring to “grace” in an exclusively Christian context.

While grace wears Russian Orthodox garb in this film, the concept expands to occupy a more universal definition through the use of strong metaphorical imagery. Grace, it seems to suggest, is a state of mind: if you believe it is a gift from God, this film will probably affirm your faith; if not, it will won’t offend you with overt evangelism.

The beauty of Andre Rublev is that, like life itself, it places its world before you in all its wonder and horror, and then lets you decide what to make of it. It strives to illuminate the human condition, rather than preach platitudes.

The best art has a way of doing that.

As for the DVD itself, Criterion has done a marvelous job of pulling together some rare documentary material, as well as enlisting the aid of Harvard film professor Vlada Petric in the creation of a somewhat dry, academic commentary track. My one complaint is that the transfer, while supposedly made digitally from a pristine 35mm print, lacks sharpness. It is also not anamorphic 16×9, which I consider an essential feature of any DVD of a film shot wider than 1.66:1.

All the same, Andre Rublev is an indispensable film for the serious cinephile’s collection.

Tarkovksy’s films are not for everyone. He is the Russian equivalent of Kubrick or Kurasawa or Welles, and he is as different from them as they are from each other. If you’re expecting a conventional structure and pacing, you’ll be dissapointed. Rublev requires patience.

Most people consider the film long and slow. The trick is to stop waiting for the narrative to develop and just experience the sequences as self-contained ideas. After a couple of hours you’ll see it working up to something you hadn’t thought possible at first. And by the two-hundred minute mark, it evolves into a complete emotional and cinematic experience.

I’m serious. It’s amazing. *This* is Tarkovsky’s gift.

By his own admission he was always more fascinated with the “poetry” of images than their immediate narrative value. As a result his films deliver an experience which is unique to every viewer. This is no mean feat; today directors strive to make the global audience feel “happy” or “sad” according to a pre-defined and market-oriented narrative structure. It’s a cheap manipulation (like “Titanic” and the damn theme music).

Tarkovksy doesn’t go there at all. He shows you something and lets you feel whatever you want. This isn’t a cheap cop-out from an inept director, it’s *your* experience. And a dangerous approach in a world where audiences expect to be cued when and how to react. Have you ever noticed how upset people get when left to their own emotional devices?

Tarkovsky has mastered the long-take, mise-en-scene, and the wide-screen (2.35) frame, and the Critereon transfer does it’s best to present this. There are technical problems with the transfer, but having seen Rublev on a pan-and-scan VHS, the extra bucks are still worth it. And the additional resolution of DVD gives the image more texture and detail.

Side Note:

One of the tragedies (now being slowly rectified thanks to DVD) of modern cinema is the pan-and-scan VHS. Many lesser works can survive it (”Titanic” again!), but it has ruined almost every one of Tarkovsky’s films. He composes very deliberate frames, balanced in a way that only wide-screen can accomodate (”The Sacrifice” was the exception, shot 1.66 I believe). The VHS transfers are claustrophobic and uncomfortable (showing only 60% of the image), but in their true aspect ratio his shots are spacious and carefully composed.

The accompanying materials (intervews and commentary) are interesting, but dryly presented by academics. A shame, since this is the type of film that Martin Scorcese could do a fantastic commentary for.

And be warned, there are moments of horrific violence and cruelty.

Since the Reagan administration came to power, the west has lost track of Eastern European cinema. It had (has) a style and direction as unique as the Japanese or British. Tarkovsky is one of it’s gems, and no one who considers themselves a conoseur of film can go without a Tarkorvsky viewing.

My personal favourites are “Stalker”, “My Name Is Ivan”, and “The Sacrifice”, and of course “Solaris” — unfortunately the only one I’ve seen in it’s Wide Aspect is “Sacrifice”. But Tarkovsky is one of the greatest directors in history, and “Andrei Rublev” is still an amazing film.

Bye the way,

If you’re not quite ready for the plunge into Tarkovsky, try the documentary “Andrei Tarkovsky Directs”, which is an action packed account of the making of “The Sacrifice”.

In the early 80’s Jim Henson created one of the most ambitious fantasy films ever: The Dark Crystal. It was a movie that had a completely realized world with its own creatures and flora… and it was performed entirely by puppets. Not the Muppet kind that Henson is famous for, mind you. These were serious creations that involved serious innovations in animatronics. While many loved the movie and it was critically acclaimed many others didn’t “get it”. There was no human interaction in the movie whatsoever and that put off people. Also the movie was serious with none of that Muppet mayhem Henson fans are so used to. That put off a few more people.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Labyrinth! Click Here

The next evolutionary step in Jim’s grand scheme of fantasy puppetry was Labyrinth, and they filled in the gaps that The Dark Crystal left for those who couldn’t (or wouldn’t) “get” the concept of a fully realized fantasy setting that is outside of our own. How does he do it? Let me tell you…

Step One – Human actors. Labyrinth included the young, yet already talented Jennifer Connelly as their heroine and well-established musician and actor David Bowie as her nemesis. Now you get the fun of a complete puppet world while at the same time you have human characters that interact in that same environment. Thus giving the viewer a better connection to the puppet characters.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Labyrinth! Click Here

Step Two – Better puppets. The Dark Crystal is a masterpiece in of itself, however the technology used to animate the puppets was in its infancy and if you had to be picky about it you can pick away at the limitations of the puppets in that movie. With Labyrinth you get updated technology, which gives you puppets who can show emotions better. Case in point is the goblin Hoggle, who is the starring puppet. So much attention to detail went into his facial expressions that you can actually see the fear, disgust, anger, and joy in his eyes. Add to that other puppetry innovations and you have a world of cool puppets.

Step Three – Keep it fun. The Dark Crystal was a grandiose and serious film that included some funny moments now and then. Labyrinth is the opposite. Is a fun film where the characters meet up with unexpected and often times crazy situations. Makes this fantasy adventure feel more comical in the same way it would reading a fun bedtime story.

Step Four – Keep the original concept. Jim Henson did The Dark Crystal with the thought that he wanted to create a whole different world inhabited by beings and creatures portrayed entirely by puppets. Labyrinth is essentially the same thing, but done in a different way. Walking through the movie’s namesake (the maze that leads to the goblin city) is definitely like being in another world that’s both fascinating and fun. Much of what you see is visually impressive and essentially relish in the fact your eyes can play tricks on you. Brian Froud is again signed on as the conceptual designer and his work shines just as well in this iteration as it did with Dark Crystal.

Labyrinth also has the destinction of having songs specially written for the movie by David Bowie. Keep in mind this movie was in the 80’s so what you get is 80’s Bowie, and there are a couple scenes that flow more like music videos (or musical numbers) than standard scenes.

You might get the impression I am dogging on Dark Crystal in order to lift up Labyrinth. Can’t be farther from the truth. However I do know the differences between the two films and how the other was made in response to the first. Labyrinth is the folk tale while Dark Crystal is the fantasy book. I believe both are fantastic movies.

The original DVD for Labyrinth was a good compilation right from the start, and is superceded only now with the Anniversary Edition. Here’s what you get:

Documentary Making of the Labyrinth – Has interviews with actors, puppet performers and production staff including Jim Henson, Brian Henson, David Bowie (who gives us some insight on his character) and Jennifer Connelly as well as lots of details on design and production of the movie. This documentary is a gem for those of you want solid behind-the-scenes details and was in the original DVD and is included on the Anniversary edition.

Journey Through the Labyrinth: Kingdom of Characters and The Quest for Golden City – These two all new featurettes include updated interviews with the cast and crew and never before seen footage from the Jim Henson archives. Kingdom of Characters focuses on… you guessed it… the main characters in the movie including conceptual design for the puppets (although Hoggle seems to be mostly left out, likely because there is so much of him in the original documentary) and background info on the actors. The Quest for the Golden City is mostly design details on the labyrinth, Goblin City and castle itself. These featurettes do well to fill in the gaps left by the original documentary. The extra footage is test footage of the puppets and such, with some production footage as well. I noticed some of the production footage was a rehash of what’s on Making of the Labyrinth, but the crosstalk is few and far between.

Commentary by Brian Froud

You also get DDS 5.1 Surround in English and Japanese along with a Portugese stereo track (how many movies have a Japanese and Portugese dub?), Subtitles (in English, Japanese, Portugese and French), remastered visuals from high definition masters, and it’s presented in anomorphic 2.35.1 widescreen. Believe me, the diffence in video quality between this and all of the previous DVD releases is significant. For no other reason this alone is worth getting.

This is what you would call the definitive edition to date, although that’s about to change. Labyrinth is slated for release on high definition Blu-Ray in late September! It will have all the same features as this edition and will also include an exclusive picture in picture extra titled The Storytellers. Which one do you get? Well until I hear more about the high definition transfer I won’t say for sure, but so far the track record on Blu-Ray editions has been good. My only concern is if the clean up for Blu-Ray took out too much of the original grain from the camera. Will update when I learn more.

Labyrinth is a wonderful movie for all ages. The visuals will impress and the hijinks will entertain. If you are a Muppet fan this movie will be much more accessable than the Dark Crystal, and if you like The Storyteller then you have abolustely no choice but to get this (it’s like a full length Storyteller movie sans John Hurt).

This is one of my favourite movies, because it truly understands the hearts of grown up girls, their love of fantasy and lure the dark & dangerous lad that leads us down the garden path. It’s a wonderful tale, with marvellous tunes that linger on and on. From “It’s Only Forever”, “Underground” and “Chilly Down” but most especially “As the World Falls Down”. Sigh, such a beautiful and deftly filmed Cinderella Ball for Adults. I don’t know a woman that loves this film who does not say “I want that dress!”.

Sarah is an easy to relate to teen. She is part child – part woman, one foot in each world and truly not belonging to either. Added to this, her father has remarried and has little time to spend on his growing daughter. We are not told, but it’s clear her mother is dead. Mom was an actress and lover of the magic and she passed this on to her lovely daughter. It’s very hard to believe Jennifer Connelly is only 12 years old here!!! She is the perfect Sarah, the beautiful woman-child that has no sense of her place in the world. Too grown for childish things, too young for boys and dating. Her cherished childhood toys are giving carelessly to her new baby stepbrother, again emphasizing her feelings of alienation. Her new mother has little patience, and even when she tries, she meets with a hostile resentful woman-child. Sarah pain at feeling as if she is not wanted anywhere is so heartbreaking.

Left with the crying baby, and feeling that her world is slowly crumbling around her (reflected in Bowie’s “As the World Falls Down”), the child side takes control and spitefully wishes the baby to be taken away from the Goblins. In true Muppet fashion, they promptly and cheerful comply. Sarah faces the Goblin King Jareth – perfectly brought to life by Bowie – and demands he return her brother. When Jareth says he will only return her brother if she finds her way to the Goblin City, Sarah sucks in her courage and goes after him.

Along the way she meets wonderful friends such as Hoggle and Sir Didymous, and finds out her own inner value and worth. Something we all have to do in growing up.

A true faerytale for the little girl in us, wonderfully realized through the magic of the Muppets, Connelly and Bowie. This set is laced with all the wonderful goodies that will thrill all the many lovers of the film.

Kudos for the super repackage.

This DVD is awesome. The great literacy lessons continue…and these are some of the cutest WW episodes we’ve ever seen. My kids love them, especially the “monster maker” music video at the end- so fun!

Highly recommended!!

WordWorld is great, and the DVDs for my two-year-old are awesome. She says “Woof” when she wants to watch this DVD because Dog is so cute, and she spells along with the animated Build-A-Word sequences. The content is top-notch!

What I do have a very big problem with is the “Hopla” trailers that run automatically at the end of the WordWorld disks. It’s pretty sneaky to piggy back another series for toddlers at the end of a series this good. It’s just an unwelcome commercial, which I shouldn’t have to deal with since I *bought* the DVD. I definitely DO NOT want my daughter to watch the inane Hopla series and would never buy it. Unfortunately, the jingle is permanently stuck in my head after hearing the first few seconds three or four times in the background before I could stop the DVD.

As with most “docunentaries” on the prehistoric world, this one is more than a little speculative.

But keeping that in mind, I do recomend it. It is interesting, entertaining, and filled with thought provoking (if unproven) ideas.

Clash of the Caveman was a B Grade Documentary, with a credible narrative that gives a simple case story of 65kya to 30kya when Neanderthals engaged with the new kids on the block, Homo sapiens. The producers could have done a better job with Neanderthal morphology, especially leg length, and facial features, especially the females (I am very sure both Neanderthal and Homo sapiens females would have been much hairier than the silk skin beauties presented). Overall I think the description of tool technology was well done, but no unique features of modern art was introduced, especially the possibility of the Neanderthal flute. Also, language was without doubt the defining skill which produced us (modern humans), but the subject is just skimmed over with little explanation of the relationship between the basal ganglia and hand use in technology construct, art, or even sign language. Also, use of fire is only touched on, and this would have been an interesting discussion, as there is no proof that Neanderthals actually cooked food. Overall the documentary is pleasant, but I am still waiting for a producer that can give a complete narrative with Neanderthals properly introduced as possibly the most successful hominids of all time.

I wasn’t entirely versed on the Charles Manson murders so this movie was, first of all, terrifyingly eye-opening for me. This is seriously one of the creepiest murders not only in Hollywood history but in American history, and the documentary retells the story in chilling detail with all the gruesome images to accompany it. Yes, the film is historically accurate and educational, but it is also surprisingly edge-of-your-seat and scary! If you’re waiting for a calm moment to take that next bite of popcorn, you’re going to be waiting a long time (like I was)! I watched this movie with friends for two different movie nights and everyone was successfully creeped out and impressed!! Buy this movie, you won’t be disappointed!
