Uncounted: The New Math of American Elections focuses on both confirmed attempts to rig elections and suspected attempts to rig elections right up to the national level of president. Of course, this is a highly charged and controversial subject; and it’s primarily but not exclusively presented by Democrats who assert that elections were rigged using electronic voting machines, voter intimidation and other “techniques” to get a particular candidate to win a political election and thwart our cherished democracy. It is important to note that this film was made in 2007 before the recent presidential election. Therefore, this film does not criticize or praise the way the most recent presidential election was handled.

It is absolutely fascinating to see interviews with people who were victimized when they tried to blow the whistle on Diebold, a company that made electronic voting machines but then added extra computer code to “flip” votes. The idea of “flipping” votes is simple. If one candidate gets 51% of the vote and the other gets 48% of the vote, the machine automatically changes it so that the first candidate now has only 48% of the vote and the other now has 51%. We meet and see a computer programmer who testifies before a congressional hearing that he was required to write computer code to make that happen; and it was great to find out that he resigned and even rejected a million dollar bonus to stay with the company.

Another story that was particularly interesting was that of Scott Heller, a night shift word processor at a legal firm that represented Diebold. He discovered documents and information that proved Diebold was rigging votes using code in their computerized voting machines–and wow, how they punished him. At the time this was filmed he was a felon on parole for stealing evidence from the law firm; and of course he did make unauthorized copies of confidential information. On the other hand, however, his attorney points out that this sent a very negative message to anyone who wants to be a whistle blower out there. In addition, we get great interview footage with Bev Harris, founder of Black Box Voting, who campaigns tirelessly for fair vote counting if we use computerized voting machines.

We also meet Bruce Fink, a Republican in Utah who was an elected official–before he was kicked out of office. However, one flaw I found here was a lack of more detail about Bruce’s story. I would have preferred the documentary to explain more about how other people were able to get rid of Bruce Fink.

Finally, we see voter intimidation specifically in the national elections of 2000 and 2004. For example, many people in African-American and Latino communities were told that if they didn’t go away and park elsewhere they’d get a parking ticket; and in one predominantly African-American district there was no electricity in the building despite the fact that the building just across the street had electricity! Others had to wait up to fifteen hours just to vote when there weren’t enough voting machines.

This documentary is somewhat skewed; it usually shows Democrats being shut out by Republicans as a result of faulty voting machines. On the other hand, it does make its point very well and it uses hard facts to back up its assertions. This film should stimulate some lively conversation about a very relevant topic fundamental to our democracy.

A revolution is afoot in these United States. But unlike, say, the American Revolution, this one is not of the people. No, it’s anything but. This revolution has silenced the people, strangled our democracy and made a mockery of Constitution principles. The revolution? The privatization of the American electoral system.

How did this happen? How did the concept of one man, one vote get so skewed that partisans interests now design machines to register and count votes, in secrecy, with `proprietary’ equipment that can’t be independently reviewed and verified? How did so many of us become disenfranchised – without even knowing it? It’s mind boggling.

And it’s at the heart of UNCOUNTED. The film gives historical perspective on how our electoral system was slowly given over to those who do not have the good of the republic in their hearts, but rather see how our system can be manipulated toward their own aims; it lays bare the idea that our elections are fair and reflect the true will of the people; and it proves in all too painful detail how this electoral revolution led to the installation of the most corrupt administration in our nations’ history.

Buy it, watch it, show it to your family and friends and everyone you know who cares about our future. Because as UNCOUNTED shows, there is a tipping point, and we may have already passed it.

WRONG!

This guilty pleasure is one of my all-time favorite testosterone pumping 80’s Ahnuld action flicks chock full of some of the most memorable and hilariously over-the-top one-liners ever assembled in a single Schwarzenneger film with an exhaustive body count tally of 81 confirmed kills. Now it’s finally getting the UNRATED Director’s Cut treatment it deserves so we can see even more of the Governator at his macho 80’s Republican finest.

Don’t deprive yourself of some pleasure. Come on, Bennett… let’s party!

This is by far one of the greatest movies of the century. I can’t believe what an awesome movie it is. It has no morals, no lessons to teach, no political statements, no coherence, and no sense whatsoever. When Schwarzenegger’s beloved daughter is kidnapped by a psychotic dictator, he doesn’t try to reason with the bad guys or take precautions like most action heroes would. He just goes bonkers and starts killing everyone in sight. The movie is packed with fantastic scenes such as Arnie crashing a car at about 80 mph, without a seatbelt, and being perfectly fine, Arnie tearing a phone booth out of a wall, Arnie punching a guy through a wall, etc. It’s gloriously entertaining.

Also, despite his reputation for bad acting, he delivers all his lines with perfect comic timing (”Let off some steam, Bennett”). Bennett is also a great character, but no match for Arnold. You’d have to be completely devoid of personality to not find this at least slightly entertaining.

This is my favorite film of all time, hands down. Buy it, don’t think about it. It will be the greatest investment you ever make for an action flick of the 80’s.

10/10 stars. Seriously.

“AKIRA”, the 1988 anime film that became the masterpiece of mangaka and director Katsuhiro Otomo.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Akira! Click Here

My first viewing of “AKIRA” was back in 1993. I have to be truthful, it was one of those films that I had to watch several times because I felt I was missing something integral. Each time I watched the film, there was always something new that I picked up and for anyone who has seen this animated film, just how much was put into the animation, the detail for an animated film.

In 1988, Disney had “Oliver & Friends” and being touted as the first animation to utilize hand drawn art and computerized graphics and as the film incorporated some darkness that may scare the kiddies, in Japan, “AKIRA” was a film that would set records in the Summer and eventually get a limited release in theaters.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Akira! Click Here

The film would surprise and shock people because this was not a children’s animation, this was geared for adults. And did it look awesome at that time!

Flash forward over 20-years later for the Blu-ray release!

VIDEO & AUDIO:

For one, the film is now in 1080p and 16×9. Having seen this film evolve with each release from the VHS to LaserDisc and then DVD and now Blu-ray, for a film created back in 1988, “AKIRA” just looked amazing.

From the action scenes and just watching it on a large screen, I was amazed of how great it looked. Again, this is a 1988 release and I compared it to Disney’s “Oliver & Company” which was remastered and recently released on DVD

. But for an animation of that time, it looked like an animation of that time. “AKIRA” looked fantastic!

The colors were vibrant, I swear I was noticing background art from the film for the first time and that’s considering that I watched this film probably two dozen times already.

As for audio, this is where Bandai Entertainment has really gone out of their way to create a top-notch product. Being audiophiles themselves, the full capacity of the Blu-ray disc was used for the audio. “AKIRA” is the first film on Blu-ray that is released in 192 kHz/24-bit in Dolby TrueHD 5.1 sound. The highest level of sound quality attainable right now on contemporary media.

CD’s are sampled in 44.1 kHz and reproduces at 20 kHz. This Blu-ray is sampled in 192 kHz and reproduces at 96 kHz. CD’s are 16-bit, this Blu-ray Disc, the audio is 24-bit. The original soundtrack of “AKIRA” was originally recorded as a master tape that contained frequencies up to 100 kHz and so, with Blu-ray technology, this soundtrack on the Blu-ray is how the composer intended for people to listen to it.

With that being said, the audio of “AKIRA” is just phenomenal. From the music and the taiko drums, the the various sound effects of the motorcycles to the crowds that are protesting. The film just comes alive with this soundtrack on Blu-ray and really, was floored by the outstanding quality.

I watched both Japanese and audio soundtracks. A few things I need to let people know is when you see the menu being offered in Japanese or English, if you select Japanese, you get four choices of audio. If you select English, you get only three selections (Japanese Dolby Digital 5.1ch track is not on the English selection but the Japanese menu selection) of audio but I’m sure that most fans will be listening to the Dolby TrueHD tracks.

Also, another note is that this release features the Pioneer 2001 English audio dub and not the 1991 Streamline dub. Having been subjugated to the Streamline English dub which was terrible in my opinion, this Pioneer dub is more to my liking.

With that being said, with the Blu-ray disc focusing so much on audio quality and using the Blu-ray disc for that purpose, that would mean that special features that fans were accustomed to on the VHS or DVD release will not get on the Blu-ray disc, so don’t toss your DVD’s out just yet.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The Blu-ray disc was utilized completely for audio, thus there is not much room to put anything else. Included are the two teaser trailers, the TV commercial, two trailers, storyboards (Still images) and a 32-page color booklet.

The 32-page color booklet features 16-pages that go into the science behind the creation of the audio for “AKIRA” and “Hypersonic” which is “a medium that allows for the expression of something that was never possible for conventional sound limited to 20 kHz”. Also, an “Interview with Katsuhiro Otomo”, “The Effect Animation That Made AKIRA Shine” and more.

So, missing are the “Production Report (The Making of Akira)”, “Sound Clip (a documentary of the creation of the soundtrack), director’s interview and the documentary on the Akira restoration that were included on the DVD. So, don’t throw away your black tin DVD special edition just yet.

The Blu-ray case comes with a slipcase (front cover shown above and rear-side features the image below) and according to Bandai Entertainment, the slipcase and the 32-page booklet are part of the first press only.

JUDGMENT CALL:

“AKIRA” will always be regarded as one of the top animated films of all time. It set a precedence in animation quality in the late 80’s and the 90’s due to its detailed scenery, the vocal dub matching the lips (”AKIRA” was the first anime production featuring voice acting done before the animation was completed) and utilized over 160,000+ animated cels in order to achieve the fluid motion throughout the film. Again, this was animation geared for adults and has become a classic, must-own animated film.

I have to admit that having watched the film so many times, by the time the DVD came out, I think I was burned out on “AKIRA”. So, watching it nearly eight years later on Blu-ray and hearing the audio really bringing the film to life.

It’s hard to explain but having watched this film nearly two dozens times, this was the first time that I actually watched and thoroughly enjoyed the film. I was excited because of how much life the TrueHD audio brought into the animation. Just sitting down and hearing the taiko drums, the motorcycles revving, the people talking and to hear the overall soundtrack, it made a big difference for me watching it now than any of those times watching it before.

I was amazed by the vibrancy of the colors of the film, but I admit that I was waiting for the dust and the scratches and to my surprise, there were none. They cleaned this film up pretty good. So, aside from the much talked about audio, the video is no slouch either.

Last, I know that the direction of the Blu-ray in terms of going for superior audio quality is exciting for the audiophile but for those who want the special features that were featured on the DVD or fans of the original Streamline dub have a valid argument for them wanting inclusion of those features. Personally, I love releases that managed to include as many features as possible but in this case, having something unprecedented for a film and getting superior audio quality, it may not matter to casual viewers/listeners but I totally agree with the Japanese reviewers, this new audio makes a big difference when you view this film on Blu-ray.

So, superior audio quality versus older special features that probably would be in regular 480p anyway, personally I would rather go with the superior audio quality. Again, the production report has been offered on VHS and DVD already (and the DVD release of “AKIRA” was just too cool to own and by no means will I ever toss that release out).

What has made me even more excited is that the process invested in order to create this 192 kHZ process on “AKIRA” can hopefully now be used on other Blu-ray releases. “Mobile Suite Gundam” movies on Blu-ray anyone? How about those films in 192 kHZ, 24-bit ala Dolby TrueHD. That would be awesome!

So, “AKIRA” has opened up possibilities for Bandai Entertainment and overall, although not loaded with special features, the improved audio and video quality can’t be ignored. Again, “AKIRA” belonged on Blu-ray and it’s a solid release.

What can I say? “AKIRA” on Blu-ray has definitely made me excited for this film all over again. An incredible Blu-ray release that is simply a must-own!

Akira is one of those movies that you never forget. The images are extremely powerful and graphic, so that they stick with you long after the movie is over. Despite its sometimes-confusing plot line, this movie is a wonderfully written, chilling look into the future, and into humanity as a whole. The movie more or less centers around a teenage biker gang in Neo-Tokyo, thirty-years after World War III. The main characters, Kaneda and Tetsuo, are two childhood friends who are constantly in competition with each other (Tetsuo being the weaker, taunted one.) Regardless, Tetsuo still looks up to Kaneda. As the introduction moves out of the chase scene, an interesting encounter with an odd looking child (who awakens the physic abilities lying dormant within Tetsuo’s mind) truly begins the movie.

The animation quality in this movie is almost enough of a reason to buy it. The detail is incredible, umparalled even by Disney?s standards. No one background or setting is used twice, and the environment is in constant change, be it blinking lights or a person exiting a random building. Oddly enough, the Bladerunner-esque buildings throughout the movie also help to establish the feeling of urgency, and the sensation of teetering on the edge of something great, something that we cannot possibly understand. The characters also move in a realistic, smooth motion, something that is missing from many anime television shows, like Pokemon or Digimon.

The music in this movie is also an aspect that really stands out, with a sound all its own. With this new DVD cleanup, you can hear every bell, whistle and drum beat. It sounds more Japanese than most animes out there, and that is not a bad thing. Every single song fits the actions incredibly well, from the haunting Requiem at the end, to the oddly infectious Japanese drums in Kaneda, heard during the motorcycle chase scene and credits of the movie. Hats off to Shoji Yamashiro.

The voice acting is good, but not great. I feel that the original dubbing job used voice actors much better suited to their animated counterparts. For example, Kaneda’s original voice actor fit his attitude well, as his voice had the same inflection and as a teenage boy’s does. The new voice actor, however, sounds like an adult trying to speak like a teenager. Tetsuo?s voice sometimes sounds a little off too, as the inflection in his words do not always coincide with the action on screen There is no mention of the original script or dub however, but there is a small interview with the English voice actors of Kaneda, Tetsuo, and Kei.

The extras on this DVD are excellent, with detailed information on how the music was created, the voice actors of both the English and Japanese scripts, and it also holds about 4,500 stills from the movie and the entire movie’s storyboard. The menus are easy to follow and understand, and contain colorful backgrounds with music-sound bites from the movie.

Overall, this DVD is a must have for any Sci-fi or animation fan. It shows the best of what anime has to offer. You will never forget the magnificent story, or the unforgettable characters that make this movie a classic, inside and outside of anime.

Remember though, this movie is NOT for young children and the squeamish. If your child is under the age of fifteen, or if you do not like the sight of blood and body parts, the movie is probably not for you.

There is a group of people who love to feel superior by disdaining things that everyday people enjoy. One of those things is a John Wayne movie. I am one who really enjoys John Wayne movies. He had a great screen presence, even when he was older, as he was here, in the Rooster Cogburn movies, and especially in the great movie “The Shootist”.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Cahill – United States Marshal! Click Here

This movie is really about fathers and sons, and particularly absent fathers and sons who find the wrong path and try to get back to the right way. Wayne plays the title character, J. D. Cahill. The opening scene is him on the road taking on a band of five bad guys in a shootout that ends the way you would expect the hero to play in a John Wayne film.

Cahill is an older man and we learn that he has young sons, one, Danny, a young teen and the other, Budger, a young boy. Their mother died. In a touching conversation with Danny, regretting his not being around for them, he acknowledges that he has focused too much on his job. He does note that when Danny’s mother (Cahill’s dear wife) was dying her last words to Cahill were, “Go Get `Em!”. And so, he has been ever since.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Cahill – United States Marshal! Click Here

George Kennedy plays one of his best and menacing bad guys, Abe Fraser. I don’t want to get into the plot, but he does suck Danny and Budger into his plans. And it is the boys trying to extricate themselves without letting their father in on their problems that ends up causing most of the problems. The crisis comes when some innocent men are facing death for the crimes the boys know they and Abe’s gang committed and they have to get things right in time.

You expect things to turn out a certain way in a film like this. There aren’t any big surprises, but there are some funny and some touching moments along the way. And Wayne is still quite good as he holds the screen with his unique presence. And Neville Brand as Lightfoot provides some very fine moments in the film.

I don’t think it is one of the best things Wayne did, but it is still better then most films and suitable for families. It can provide some good discussion with your kids, as well.

And it is a John Wayne film.

I liked this story, and the way that it was acted out by John Wayne. A “Duke Turkey” it isn’t, as it shows the all-too-familiar results of what happens when Dad isn’t around to take care of the children – a sad case of fatherhood today. John Wayne Plays a U.S. Marshall who’s out after the bad guys…but ends up with a surprise when his two sons turn out to have helped out in a murder/robbery. Somehow (we aren’t told how), Cahill knows his young sons are in cahoots with George Kennedy’s bad guys, and they end up l;eading him right to the criminals and culprits, which ends in a wild shoot-out. It also shows that a father’s teachings, despite his absence, can be the deciding factor in children’s lives, as Cahill’s two sons actually do the right thing in the end.

Good Drama! Excellent storyline, though rather dark, and does have violence, but an all-around GOOD John Wayne movie!

It’s very good. My Granddaughter really loves this and all the others od Dora’s the Explorer.

My 2 year-old daughter and I couldn’t wait for this one to make it to TV, so we borrowed it from our library, and I’m sure glad we did! In the double-length title episode, Dora is once again on a storybook adventure, this time helping to preserve the Crystal Kingdom’s beautiful colors by retrieving its four magic crystals from a greedy king. This episode put a lot of emphasis on sharing, always a popular theme for the preschool crowd, and followed the usual format and the same old, beloved cast of characters. My daughter was really excited when the Snow Princess made a few brief appearances, while I greatly enjoyed Richard Kind (Paul from Spin City) doing the voice of the greedy king. I did have to roll my eyes when Dora and Boots got butterfly wings, envisioning the inevitable marketing of butterfly-winged Dora dolls for Christmas, but as my daughter thought that part was “awesome” I guess I can’t complain too much.

The other two adventures included on this DVD are both great episodes too – one about Boots and Tico’s first day of school, and the other a King Midas-like tale about a wish machine that makes bananas drop on Boots’ head every time he says “bananas.” Overall, a great, fun new Dora DVD!

All the people that say the plot makes no sense, and they didn’t know what was going on, need to read this review. To truly enjoy this movie, you have to be educated on black and white musicals, poetry, and greek mythology.
First of all I will explain the origins of the word “Xanadu”.
In 1797 there was a poet named Samuel Coleridge who lived by himself. He was asleep, after taking a dose of Opium and washing it down with alcohol. In his dreams appeared a beautiful woman, (he later called her a muse) reciting a beautiful poem. Alas, a knock at the door from a friend broke him out of his dream, and he rushed to his table to write down what he could remember. The result was a poem titled “Kubla Khan”
In the poem, there is a heavenly place called XANADU, where there is eternal love and happiness. The word has sense been adopted to mean “heaven”.
The movie is based on this poem. When Kira appears to a bewildered Gene Kelly, and tells him to call his new club XANADU, and together they recite the first lines of the poem KUBLA KHAN.
Now the reason Gene Kelly is in this film is because Kira has appeared in his life in the 1940’s. She returns to help him out again, to inspire his dying ambitions, by inspiring him to open another music club. However he will need someone young and hip to help him out. So Kira also inspires Sonny Malone to quit his bland painting job and use his talents towards his dream. Therefore Kira brings the 2 men together.
Xanadu is a remake of a film titled “Down To Earth” starring Rita Hayworth. Rita also appears as a muse to inspire people to follow their dreams.
Gene kelly’s character “Danny McGuire” was actually the name of Gene’s character in the 1944 film “Covergirl”.
If you are well read on Greek Mythology, you will know there are muses who represent the arts. They are called for in times of need to help inspire an artist’s dying ambitions. Therefore the opening scene where the muses are coming out of the wall serves as a window between their world and ours.
Another good tidbit to know about the film, Andy Gibb was suppose to be the male star, not Michael Beck. Andy apparently was in ill health at the time and couldn’t be insured by the company.
Xanadu was a film I saw as a 9 year old child. I had been severely injured and could not walk. I was hopeless and depressed. Then one night, Xanadu made its cable debut. I was carried into the living room to watch it (I couldn’t walk). I had never seen Olivia Newton-John before, and I was mesmerized by the most incredible woman I had ever seen, dancing and singing through this magical fairy tale. My life had been hum drum up to that point, and the magic, glitz, animation, and music from this film made me want to get up. I was so anxious to walk and rollerskate (LOL) that I was up in no time walking around. I will forever love this movie and how a “muse” called Olivia inspired me to live again.

I LOVE this movie. Why talk about how bad it is? Because it is VERY bad. It’s so bad it’s good! Whose idea was it to merge fading musical star Gene Kelly with 80’s pop sensation Olivia Newton John??? Throw in some ELO music and some neon special effects and you’ve got XANADU. Oh, it’s fabulous!! Roller skating, off-the-shoulder 80’s dresses, long hair, leg warmers…. This is XANADU. The storyline is negligable. You just wait till they get to the next song! The choreography is that Kenny Ortega 80’s stuff. Look for Matt Latanzi (Olivia’s ex) as a dancer in the background. By the time this movie gets to it’s roller-skating in the round finale, you will be rocking! (The dancers/rollers chant: “Xanadu! Xanadu!” and perform some sort of choreographed hand-jive movements! I want to learn those moves!) Enjoy it, y’all. Like the song says: “Now that you’re here, now that you’re near … Xanadu!”

This DVD starts with episode 8, and covers the Genki Tournament sequence. Great stuff, with more action and less exposition to get through than the first two DVDs. The last episode on this disc is a cliffhanger, so you may want to purchase Vol. 4 as well.

Quality anime with dubbed and subbed versions, and in the ‘extras’ they have all the on-screen kanji and names translated, which is nice. Plus it’s still early enough in the series that you could collect them all.

I am not going to talk about nothing and get annoying and sound obsessive in this review, I’m gonna get right down to the point. If you have seen te first 8 episodes than i suggest you read this otherwise dont and see those first 8 so what I am saying is not confusing you.

Episode 9: Yusuke had just finished his first case as spirit detective and of course he is in for another. Boton(Yusuke’s assistant and Grim Reaper) tells Yusuke of Genkai(a very powerful psychic) who fears her death is near, is holding a series of tests with the winner being taught her powers. It is thought that a demon, Rando, will enter the tournament in disguise. Rando is a very powerful demon who has taken the lives of 99 psychics for there techniques and if he inherets genkais powers he would be unstoppable. Yusuke shows up at Genkais where he finds Kuwabara. Kuwabara being Yusuke’s Rival being there for a different reason then everyone one else there, decides he will pass the tests hopping he can beat Yusuke in the end.

Episode 10: The tests are over and now it is down to 8 finalists including Yusuke and Kuwabara. Dragon Ball Z is the one greatest anime series ever created. With its action-packed universe and compelling storylines, Akira Toriyama’s magnum opus has never failed to please. This is the latest season set FUNimation has released of the series.

This set picks up where the last one left off. Goku has defeated Frieza, and the Z-Fighters have returned to Earth. Goku is alive, but has opted not to return to Earth, instead continuing personal training in the vastness of space.

An old foe, Garlic Jr., has escaped from his Dead Zone prison. Using a black mist, he turns all of mankind into vampiric zombies. It’s up to Gohan, Krillin, and Piccolo to work together to defeat this returned threat… but how will they contend with an IMMORTAL foe?

It doesn’t stop there. Frieza somehow SURVIVED his battle with Goku, and has come to Earth seeking revenge. But upon Frieza’s arrival, a mysterious youth comes to their aid. Will he be a match for the tyrant who has conquered numerous galaxies?

Three years later, following extensive training, the Z-Fighters find themselves face-to-face with the Android threats that were announced to them by the mysterious young man who helped them before. It isn’t long before our heroes, even with all their training, find themselves outnumbered – and Goku is bedridden with a heart virus! How will the Z-Fighters win against what could be their greatest challenge yet?

The DVD set is divided amongst six discs, and contains the Garlic Jr., Cyborg Frieza, Android Training, and Android Sagas. The picture has been subjected to digital noise reduction, and the set includes a booklet of character profiles and episode listings.

Obviously, if you’re new to the Dragon Ball franchise, you’ll want to start with the Season One box set, but if you’re already a fan, you’ll enjoy these episodes. I won’t lie, this is one of the weaker box sets, it’s basically everything that links the Frieza and Android/Cell Sagas. The Garlic Jr. Saga has some good moments, but it’s ultimately an anime-only filler that contributes nothing to the overall storyline. The Android Training episodes fare similarly (Chi-Chi wants Goku to get a drivers license despite the fact that she was seen driving in an early episode of the series?) Even the Android Saga itself gets off to a rough, slow start. But amongst the filler and obligatory slow-moving plot progression stuff, there is some great moments, namely the battle with Cyborg Frieza, and the introductions of Androids 16, 17, and 18 – and the battles with them that follow. These aren’t the best episodes of the series, but some of them ARE key moments in the series.

One of my personal favorite features of the set is the Marathon feature. FUNimation includes a feature in these sets that allows you to view all of the episodes on each disc from start to end with no interruptions from intros/outros/recaps/etc. This is an extremely handy feature I wish more TV shows on DVD had.

Like earlier Dragon Ball Z season sets, the picture has been cropped at the top and bottom (this was done due to excessive grain and damage to the original source), and it has been subjected to the digital noise reduction process. Obviously a lot of fans, myself included, were disappointed to see the picture get cropped. While the digital noise reduction doesn’t do as thorough a job cleaning up the image as you’d hope, it IS the best these episodes have ever looked. In other words, it’s a “give and take” scenario. You lose some of the picture you could see on earlier full-frame DVDs (and there ARE a few gaping moments that will really make you question FUNimation’s decision), but on the good side, you gain some picture on the sides, and the image quality is superior to all earlier DVD releases.

Sound quality is similar to the earlier sets. English audio quality is fantastic, but the dub is still translated poorly and the voice cast is hit and miss. On the other hand, the Japanese audio quality is poor, showing its age, but it does feature a well-translated subtitle track from Steven J. Simmons that lets you experience the series as originally intended. Is Dragon Ball Z EVER going to get its Japanese audio remastered?

Additionally, like the earlier sets, you have the option of watching the English voice cast played against the original Japanese audio.

Disappointingly, the next episode previews aren’t included. But they weren’t in any earlier season set, so it’s no big surprise.

No special features are included here unless you count the trailers and the same textless opening/closing sequence all other sets like this have had. On the good side, the set does include a booklet similar to the earlier sets, with character profiles and an episode guide, making it handy to go right where you need to go on the DVDs.

It’s another good set. If you’re a fan of the series and don’t already have these episodes, you can get them all here for one low price. Cropping issues aside, this is a great set, and a good value, especially compared to the older DVD releases.

Highly recommended to any fan of Dragon Ball Z.

This has not been released yet so my review will be based on previous viewings of the episodes.

This is when things start to get really powerfull! DBZ has been called “The greatest action cartoon ever made!” I agree 100%. That being said this was/is the greatest season ever made. It’s starts most likely with the Blackwater mist saga an auspicious begining. The only thing the B-W-M saga does is waste/fill time. Then we have the Trunks saga. This saga really shows how the power level has risen. With the eminant return of Frieza, Goku still missing, and a new frieghtfully powerfull young man, the drama is there. After everything settles down a bit The Z fighters find out about a new threat even greater than Frieza. Enter the Android saga. An enemy from Goku’s past comes back to haunt him and his friends. A really dramatic action packed saga where Krilin falls for an attractive but vollatile advesary.

I really hope the original score is available for this season. There were some fantastic techno beats in this saga that I would love to hear in Dolby 5.1. I do find the original score is kinda fitting for the action in the first 3 seasons. So I won’t be too disapointed if not.

If the first 3 realeses are any indication of quality expect a few chopped/cropped shots instead of actual widescreen. I know they had some real hard repair work to do on the original film, but don’t sell me a mule and call it horse.

All in all a fantastic purchase for the DBZ fan or any fan of anime. Of course you should start at season one, but if you want to jump in without seeing every episode from the begining this is the season to do it.

While it still looks good (much better than the highly compressed DVDs that have tons of blocking artifacts), this show was originally animated in SD resolution and was upscaled for Blu-ray (it’s still worth buying if you don’t already have the DVDs or are bothered by their compression artifacts).

What’s more, it was encoded at 1080p24 despite the opening animation being animated at 30 frames per second. This means that while the main show animation is fine, the opening appears choppy on Blu-ray compared to the DVDs. The movement is not as smooth since frames are missing.

Since 1080p30 is not supported by Blu-ray, the opening would need to be encoded at 1080i in order to show all 30 of the frames per second. Since it’s not possible to have the opening at 1080i and the rest of the show at 1080p, they could either encode all of the show at 1080i (like the Japanese Blu-ray release), or encode the show at 1080p while encoding the creditless opening in the extras at 1080i. I would personally prefer the latter, but I would be satisfied with either solution.

Since FMP! The Second Raid has been out for sometime now I am not going into the story in detail, but the Video/Audio transfer (Which is, for the most part why we invest in blu-ray). As some would note, this is one of the most cleanest and slickest looking animes to date. Coming from Kyoto Animation I would expect no less as this new addition to FMP! on Blu-ray was inevitable due to its slick visuals and fantastic designs. I should note that this is a triple dip for me. (Collected individually, then the Box Set, now this Blu-ray addition)

THE MOVIE ITSELF: (Maybe some spoilers)

If anyone has followed the first season to FMP! and even the addition FMP!Fumoffu you will know that this is the second season and a hell of a season it was. Unlike the last season, the 2nd Raid is really straight forward and it leaves out the random filler type episodes. This time around the story continues almost 3 months later and sorely focuses on Kaname and Sousuke’s relationship. To be short, in the amidst of all the craziness, they both realize how important they are to each other. As I said, I will not go into much detail, this was a great season you should check it out if you have not already.

VIDEO: (Presented in an AVC-MPEG4/1.78:1/1080p)

I will be up front and say; “You haven’t seen FMP! The Second Raid in all it’s glory, if you haven’t seen it in Blu-ray!”

I have watched the DVD additions time and time again and this one is an eye opener the first time viewing it. It is definitely more vibrant, sharp, and the lines are really clean; not just another plain upscale like some thought it would be. The studio actually went in and remastered it for HD release and more importantly they removed a lot color banding. Though I might add, it is present in some scenes but rarely apparent. Just to check if my eyes were not lying to me, I went back to the DVD addition (Upscaled 1080p), and yes this is definitely a step up from that.

AUDIO: (Presented in 5.1 ENG/JP Dolby TrueHD) ^^b

Unlike the video presentation; the audio has been beefed up enormously. Some of the key upgrades in audio are more rear surround use and a bombastic use of the LFE (sub). What I appreciated the most was the liveliness that they gave the Arm Slaves; whether they were just walking or in the amidst of action, they definitely rocked the LFE thundering the house. Good stuff, not audio demo worthy, but good stuff for an anime. It would remind you of the Cloverfield monster rampaging through the city.

EXTRAS:

Unfortunately they did not add anything that the DVD additions didn’t have already. All of the extras which included Episode 000 and the Bonus OVA (presented in HD as well) are all crammed into the second disk. I should note that you can view a short trailer of the Blu-ray addition of Burst Angel; if your are wondering how it would look that is.

In conclusion, if you are a video/audiophile like me and you love to watch your anime in a high fidelity or you just love FMP! that much; you definitely want to add this one to your collection. This one is a nice addition to the Funimation Blu-ray venture. Here’s hoping for Season 1 and maybe Fumoffu for Blu-ray!
