I heard the story of these ronins before. Watching it was a lovely experience. They show how dedicated and persistence they are regardless of how people who wanted them to avenge their master and leader were harsh on them. The mother was upset that her son didn’t avenge his master, the father in-law and other close people all were rejecting that these ronins weren’t moving towards vengeance. But, these ronins were discreet and careful in their planning and finally succeeded. This is a lovely movie, it has nice setting, slow paste though, and marvelous story.

My daughter advertised to me this less known piece of cine-art. I was intrigued and ordered a DVD for myself. It should be shown to every civilized person! The film is not just well-designed and beautiful (and it is indeed!!!) – it shows special Japanese mentality concerned with sometimes very vague notions (for Europeans, alas) like nobility, trison, responsibility, good and evil, word of honor, and lot of other “nonsenses”. Although the plot is not very complicated, the film could- and must be viewed many times!

This collection is the DVD debut for all ten of these films, and I don’t even know if any of them are available on VHS. I’ve only seen them thanks to Turner Classic Movies playing them at odd hours, along with other cable channels presenting them over the years. They are excellent but not well remembered film noirs. I would rate them all between 4 and 5 stars. I thought I would list their descriptions, stars, and special features below, not in any particular order:

Buy,Download, Or Stream Film Noir Classic Collection, Vol. 4! Click Here

Crime Wave: (1954) Starring Sterling Hayden and Gene Nelson. An ex-con is trying to go straight, but circumstances force him into crime one more time. Gene Nelson plays a hard-nosed cop. Note a young Charles Bronson playing a minor role.

Commentary by James Ellroy and Eddie Muller

Crime Wave: The City is Dark

Buy,Download, Or Stream Film Noir Classic Collection, Vol. 4! Click Here

Theatrical trailer

Decoy: (1946) Starring Gene Gillie and Edward Norris. Sci-Fi meets Film Noir in this story of a woman who will stop at nothing to retrieve 400K stolen in a robbery. Gillie would make Barbara Stanwyck proud as she chews up man after man in her quest.

Commentary by Stanley Rubin and Glenn Erickson

Decoy: A Map to Nowhere

Theatrical trailer

Illegal: (1955) Starring Edward G. Robinson and Nina Foch. Robinson plays a D.A. whose upwardly mobile career faces a train wreck when a man he convicted is executed and then found to be innocent. After he hits bottom he resurrects his legal career, this time as a criminal attorney. The plot can be hard to follow, but Robinson’s performance is great.

Commentary by Nina Foch and Patricia King Hanson

Illegal: Marked for Life

Behind the Cameras: Edward G. Robinson

Theatrical trailer

The Big Steal: (1949) Starring Robert Mitchum and Jane Greer. The lead duo from “Out of the Past” trade wisecracks and insults in a cross-country chase over a suitcase full of stolen money. For once, Mitchum is actually not the bad guy. Almost too much fun to be considered Film Noir.

Commentary by Richard B. Jewell

The Big Steal: Look Behind You

They Live By Night: (1948) Starring Cathy O’Donnell and Farley Granger. The story of an escaped convict trying to live a normal life with the help of his girlfriend. Granger plays the convict who isn’t entirely bad, but not entirely reformed either.

Commentary by Farley Granger and Eddie Muller

They Live By Night: The Twisted Road

Theatrical trailer

Side Street: (1950) Starring Cathy O’Donnell and Farley Granger. Granger plays a struggling husband trying to make ends meet when he spots some cash lying around in an office one day. He takes the money, but finds out it is much more than he thought. When he tries to return the money, he gets caught up in a murder mystery. Hitchcock-like in its twists and turns.

Commentary by Richard Schickel

Side Street: Where Temptation Lurks

Theatrical trailer

Where Danger Lives: (1950) Starring Robert Mitchum and Faith Domergue. The plot is somewhat unbelievable, even for Film Noir, but Mitchum gives a strong performance that makes it worthwhile. Mitchum plays a doctor who becomes taken with a patient. Due to a concussion, his judgement becomes clouded and he believes he has murdered the patient’s husband. He and the woman go on the run, have some strange adventures, and then Mitchum realizes what kind of illness his new girlfriend was being treated for in the first place.

Commentary by Alain Silver and James Ursini

Where Danger Lives: White Rose for Julie

Theatrical Trailer

Tension: (1950) Starring Richard Basehart and Audrey Trotter. Basehart plays a mild-mannered man whose salary and disposition are not enough for his wife. She leaves him for a tough and wealthy man. Why Basehart would want her back is anyone’s guess, but he does and plans to murder his wife’s new boyfriend. The tough guy is murdered, but not by Basehart’s character.

Commentary by Alain Silver and Elizabeth Ward with Audrey Trotter

Tension: Who’s Guilty Now?

Theatrical Trailer

Act of Violence: (1948) Starring Van Heflin and Robert Ryan. Van Heflin plays a family man trying to adapt to life after the war and internment in a prison camp. Enter Robert Ryan, who plays a man with Terminator-like determination in his quest to murder Heflin’s character for something that happened during their joint stay in the German prison camp.

Commentary by Dr. Drew Casper

Act of Violence: Dealing With the Devil

Theatrical Trailer

Mystery Street: (1950) Starring Ricardo Montalban and Sally Forrest. Montalban plays a detective who, working with a forensics expert, tries to solve a murder case and exonerate the lone circumstantial suspect. One of the first films I know of to use science to help solve a murder decades before DNA made this aspect of crime solving so interesting and important.

Commentary by Alain Silver and Elizabeth Ward

Mystery Street: Murder at Harvard

Theatrical Trailer

Okay…I’ll let others go into the actual films..

I enjoy them all for different reasons but am a noir fan and a big fan of Mitchum and Sterling Hayden who appear here so I didn’t need convincing to purchase. Lets not forget these are directed by Andre De Toth, Nicholas Ray,Don Siegel, Anthony Mann,John Sturges and Fred Zinnemann…legends all. Its also fun to see Charles Bronson as a bit player in “Crime Wave” along with Gene Nelson (not singing or dancing in this one) as well as a young Janet Leigh in “Act OF Violence”.

I’d like to review the DVDs themselves…(having just made my way through much of this).

first …the transfers are excellent (typical for WB’s older titles)

The extras…commentaries are by legit experts who know the films and add real value. The commentary by James Ellroy on Crime WAve is the most unbelievably NONPC and hysterically funny/interseting one I’ve ever heard PERIOD. The short featurettes are also enlightening and give extra value to the project as well as info on the films which added to my enjoymment. These featurettes which feature folks like Oliver Stone, show film clips and the interview subjects are shot/lit very noirish which ads to the flavor and class of this presentation.

I picked this up for $39…thats $4 per film!! If you are a noir fan its simply a no brainer and if you aren’t …why are you reading this(not being smart , sincere). If you have an interest you will not be dissapointed with the quality of the presentation on these films. I agree with the other reviewer..after a slight misstep on NOIR 3..WB is back on the ball…great job!

This 1962 film is set in Hawaii and, considering that it had just become a state a mere three years before, certainly captured the public’s imagination and interest. Charlton Heston is cast as a wealthy widower whose sister, Yvette Mimieux, is in love with a Polynesian, played by James Darren. He vehemently objects to the marriage on racial grounds, but has no problem having his own little inter-racial affair with France Nuyen. Complications arise, especially when Nuyen becomes pregnant. There is a violent incident when the future bridegroom is murdered, and his doctor brother, George Chakiris, gets into a romance with Yvette Mimieux. The whole film is about racial intolerance and it sends a strong message, which kept the story interesting. The acting was good and Yvette Mimieux, then 20 years old, was a pleasure to look at. The setting was beautiful too; I can never get tired of looking at films set in Hawaii.

However, there was just a bit too much melodrama for my taste and although the story moved fast and was well plotted, I never felt any real emotion for the characters. And, as in the 60s, most of the people who were supposed to be Polynesian were really Caucasian actors with darkened skin, thereby losing authenticity. Usually, this kind of casting makes me angry, but this time I just relaxed and enjoyed the video, which was pleasant, dealt with a controversial theme, and was easy to follow. But we can’t expect all movies to be works of art. Therefore, despite its faults, I give this film a lightweight recommendation.

Contemporary audiences may only know Charlton Heston from his vehement NRA sponsorship and his occasional cameo roles in big budget films and commmercials, but at one time, he was a BIG MAN in film. Fresh from his role in “Ben-Hur, the film has him playing a domineering and self-serving plantation owner who makes life “hell” for his young sister played by Yvette Mimieux. Filmed three years or so after the admission of Hawaii into the Union, the film carefully treads the tense waters that exist between haole and native Hawaiians. Mimieux’s character is romantically involved with James Darren’s Paul Kahanna, a “native” boy. The relationsip is frowned on by the hypocrital Heston who himself is having a “back street” affair with France Nuyen. George Chakiris, as Darren’s successful doctor brother, provides support for Mimieux after a fatal occurance.

As far as political correctness is concerned, the film is hopelessly flawed with the choice of actors playing the respective Hawaiians. Darren, an alumnus of so many teen movies, does a credible job, but, not once, is believed to be Hawaiian. Chakiris, who had previously won an Academy Award for playing a Puerto Rican in “West Side Story” fares even less. Mimieux is adequate in the typical 60’s sex kitten role. Heston is basically playing his typical larger than-life self as “King” Howland.

The film is entertaining and noteworthy as an early exercise in focusing on race relations. For that reason, it gets a recommendation. Heston fans, of which I am one, will probably like it.

One highlight is the powerful score done by a young John Williams. As Heston rides a horse over the opening credits, the music is majestic and worthy of the scope and expanse of the plantation, and hints at the story to follow.

Georgia Byrd (Queen Latifah) works in retail. On the side, she’s in the church choir, and afterwards goes home and cooks while watching Emeril on TV. One day at work, she bumps her head and needs a cat scan. From the results of the CAT scan, the doctor then tells Georgia that she has a brain tumor and has three weeks to live. Upset and distraught, she goes home to look through her “Book of Possibilities” book (a book with all the goals she wants to achieve). Thinking it’s all over, she takes a trip to Czechoslovakia. While there, Georgia has the time of her life. She bungee jumps, snowboards, and so much more. During her stay, people around her start wondering who exactly she is.

…a feel good movie, with a bit of a love story to it. Last Holiday is a smart comedy that will leave you thinking about life. Latifah is exquisite and also very funny. Two thumbs way up!

Queen Latifah stars in this endearing movie that forces the audience to question their own lives. Queen is told that she only has a few weeks to live, and she finds out that she has to learn a hard lesson about living life instead of waiting for the perfect time for things to happen. While this movie does force the viewer to think about life, there are some very funny moments. LL Cool J was surprisingly good in this film, and the rest of the supporting cast was wonderful.

I’ve been a big fan of the work of the late great blues historian/folklorist, Robert Palmer, for sometime now. His book, DEEP BLUES, is generally regarded as the definitive reference on the Delta tradition… and rightly so (needless to say, if you don’t have it… get it). What a treat to finally get a chance to meet the guy… albeit, on my TV screen.

In this eponymous documentary, Palmer assumes the role of the proverbial veteran “tour guide,” casually offering us expert commentary, laced with entertaining anecdotes and served up with dry Southern wit. While we do hear and see a great deal of Palmer, the film never loses its main focus– the blues and the musicians who keep this important element of American musical heritage alive and kicking. Each of the featured artists performs one or two songs in their entirety– in sharp contrast to so many other music documentaries, which par down their musical selections to excerpted sound bites to make room for talk, talk and more talk.

Here we find everything from down-home guitars and mouth harps being played on farm house porches to full bands–influnced by the modern Chicago-style, yet still distinctly “Pure Delta”–playing in dark, smoke-filled juke joints. True to the blues tradition, the music is hot and sweaty. You can’t watch this film and sit still–you gotta shake something. Highlights: cane fife player Napoleon Strickland (you can hear more of this wonderful pre-blues tradition on TRAVELING THROUGH THE JUNGLE: NEGRO FIFE AND DRUM MUSIC FROM THE DEEP SOUTH, an album on the TESTAMENT label, and several ARHOOLIE compilations); the totally stylin’ Jessie Mae Hemphill (granddaughter of Blind Sid Hemphill, the pre-blues style fiddler/quills [panpipes] player documented in the Lomax field recordings); harp player Bud Spires telling a folktale about the devil, accompanied by Jack Owen’s soulful guitar picking in the cranky, individualistic Bentonia style, popularized by the early bluesman, Skip James; and Lonnie Pitchford’s intense singing as he accompanies himself on the diddley bow (a raised metal string nailed to the side of a house, which you pluck with a plectrum and note with a slide).

The film covers some of the same territory as Alan Lomax’s excellent “The Land Where the Blues Began,” apparently a few years down the line. It offers so much–the leisurely, respectful cinematography of Robert Mugge; the enthusiastic, informed, perceptive commentary of the late, lamented Robert Palmer; the riveting performances of Jessie Mae Hemphill, Roosevelt “Booba” Barnes, Junior Kimbrough, and others. The sequence featuring Big Jack “The Oilman” Johnson, particularly on “Catfish Blues,” is worth the price of the ticket in itself. It’s one of the best juke joint performances ever captured on film. This film is essential, indispensable, and downright captivating.

Movie Title: Stand and Deliver
Average customer review:

Stand and Deliver is available for streaming or downloading.

Stand and Deliver, directed by Ramón Menéndez and starring Edward James Olmos, is an entertaining dramatic retelling of a true story about what one man can accomplish when he dedicates his life to serving others.

The film contrasts the results of an educational system where no one cares enough to do anything more than to emptily, heartlessly “go through the motions,” with what can be achieved through the labors of a single teacher who cares enough to demand more. The film argues for this more caring kind of educator. Each contrast suggests the inherent superiority of educators putting more than just their time into teaching their students; they must put in their hearts and souls as well.

The story is told from a several perspectives. The primary perspective is that of Jaime Escalante, a man who leaves the private sector to teach public High School in Eastern Los Angeles. There are a couple of secondary perspectives told concurrently with that of Escalante.

One is that of Angel, a troubled youth who is Escalante’s most challenging student. Another is the ongoing romance between two of Escalante’s other students: Lupe and Pedro. These differing perspectives serve as a narrative device in the film. The shifting back and forth between these story lines helps to break up the film into comprehensible segments within the linear whole. These alternate perspectives help build the viewer’s affection for and interest in the students portrayed; while at the same time building the dramatic tension of the plot.

All in all, Stand and Deliver is successful in its aims (namely advancing the argument that there are no “uneducatable” students) while remaining compellingly entertaining.

In the late twentieth century movies supplanted literature as catalysts for social change. I believe that Stand and Deliver, as well as several other movies like it, have successfully moved education to the forefront as a national issue. The film is in that respect (which may well be the most important respect) a monumental success.

I wholeheartedly recommend this movie.

Stand and deliver is one of my favorite movies. It’s the story of a man who begins teaching at a high school in the slums of Los Angeles, expecting to teach Computer Science. When he arrives what he instead finds is that there is not computer department, and he’s stuck teaching basic math to a bunch of social misfits. The beginning of this movie sets the stage wonderfully by showing us the kind of people who inhabit the city as he drives through it on the way to the first day of school. When he arrives at the school we see the students in their natural environment (and a rough one it is). What is a teacher to do?

Buy,Download, Or Stream Stand and Deliver! Click Here

The protagonist of this awe-inspiring story (Jaime Escalante) is a wonderful example of what can happen when a person chooses to adapt to certain environments and NOT adapt to others. When he’s given the task of educating a group of kids that includes some scary gang-member type looking kids, instead of acting like a teacher he acts tough right back (reminding them that they’re in HIS domain). Yet, when he’s brought into a room with the other teachers and school staff, he goes against the grain. When the school’s head advisor tells the principle that everyone is doing their best, he immediately says that he’s not. And when she tells the principle that Escalante is asking too much of his students, he boldly tells her that the students will rise to the expectations of their teacher.

This alone makes the movie interesting. But what adds even more drama to situation is the fact that each and every student in the class Escalante teaches has their own peer pressures to deal with. Some students have unsavory friends who would laugh at their taking a class seriously. Some of the students have boyfriends or girlfriends who don’t understand their sudden interest in school. And some of the students have to deal with parents who don’t understand why their education should come before taking care of their own family.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Stand and Deliver! Click Here

As the movie progresses Escalante announces to the board that he wants to teach Calculus to his best students, despite the fact that the students hadn’t studied any of the prerequisites for the course. Naturally this requires them to study through their summer break, and then six days a week with extra hours!

In any teen environment there is always peer pressure. But what happens when positive peer pressure conflicts with negative peer pressure? When our gang-member type Angel first starts the class he is hesitant to get involved because of his rough and tough friends. When Escalante singles him out however, the pressure of the teacher is greater than the pressure of his “friends”. Over time this has a tremendous effect on him. Towards the end of the movie, he’s riding with his friend and starts acting stupid, and gets his friend a traffic ticket. When the guy becomes angry with him and wants to fight, Angel just walks away. What does this say about him as a person? To me, it shows that whether he likes it or not, he no longer belongs with his old associates, he’s now turning into a responsible individual.

As I said before, at the outset of the movie Escalante is the one who is thrown into pressure groups. He could become just like the other teachers, or just become uncaring like the kids in his class were initially. What he does instead is nothing short of a miracle. He uses his understanding of human nature, and the natural tendency of people to work better when their thoughts are united to his advantage. His class becomes its own little world, a club for the elite, the strong and the brave. And early on, when one of the students refuses to take a test, the other students quickly turn against her and ridicule her. She then quickly becomes obedient and gets back to work (positive peer pressure was too much for her). The harder the students are pushed and the more is expected of them, the more they feel like a team (how can I forget the scene where a student says that the rest of the class will have a better chance of making it without him?).

The driving force of the scholastic miracle (and this movie) is Escalante. As he himself said, if the students don’t have the desire, he will give it to them. And that’s exactly what he did. He MADE them want to succeed. He MADE them have the motivation to keep pushing and striving for higher and higher goals. Basically, he educated them on how to be successful and hard-working individuals. People who normally wouldn’t have anything to do with each other (computer nerds, homeboys, and rockers) all were united by their desire to achieve and make themselves into something great. They pushed themselves harder than anyone had ever done in their lives, and when push came to shove, they were successful in every way. Every single student Escalante taught passed the exam for college credit. Every one. Motivation is a powerful thing, and sometimes if you don’t already have it an extraordinary person can give it too you.

Everyone should see this movie.

This collection of DVD’s (Meet the Letters, Meet the Numbers, Meet the Shapes, Meet the Colors) definitely skews to a slightly younger viewer than the Meet the Sight Words DVD’s. So if your child is already making progress in the Meet the Sight Words DVD’s, then I would not recommend this set since your child probably already knows most of this content by then.

I’ve also noticed that the narrator did not sound very enthusiastic in the Meet the Numbers DVD. I think that’s the creator of the series. Still, her delivery of some of the numbers (such as the number 7) is flat and unenthusiastic.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Preschool Prep Pack – 4 DVDs! Click Here

The Meet the Colors DVD is good if your child doesn’t know the colors yet. But if he or she already does, the DVD would be very repetitive in terms of the content it teaches. Though it does make a good effort in teaching the same colors in several different ways.

The Meet the Shapes DVD is a bit short on shapes. I noticed that there was “octagon” but not “pentagon” or “hexagon”.

This set makes a great gift. But get this set before your child goes through the Meet the Sight Words DVD’s.

This is a wonderful Preschool preparation and my grandson

and granddaughter love to watch it. Makes learning so much fun.

And they turly do learn from watching.

You know it’s a winner when you have folks of all ages roaring with laughter from the next room. I walked in just in time to see Jonothan Frid keeping a deadly serious face stating he had to kill Julia…with a meddlesome fly buzzing onto his forehead! He had to continue the monologue with the fly buzzing to and from his forehead, to his cheek, to his forehead…you get the idea. We had tears streaming down our face laughing so hard!

Buy,Download, Or Stream Dark Shadows – Bloopers and Treasures! Click Here

Another scene has Jonothon saying “she is innocent until proven innocent.” You get the idea. And just watch them trying to say “sentamentality.” I couldn’t believe the other actors keep perfectly straight faces through it all! And the crew members ducking and running for cover has to be seen to be believed, in addition to people bumping their heads on doors and trying to continue on like nothing happened.

Even if you have never seen Dark Shadows, you’ll be holding your sides before it’s even a quarter of the way through. It’s a must have, trust me! (I think I’ve rated two things in a year as a five star in all the reviews I’ve done on many sites. This is only the third one!)

I grew up watching Dark Shadows and as a kid I never noticed the Bloopers. When I got this DVD I watched it with my sister who also was a Dark Shadows fan and we laughed our heads off. If you love Dark Shadows or if you just like good bloopers you will love this dvd. My favorite part is where the character Barnabas Collins can’t get rid of a fly that is on his nose! Lots of fun and brings back lots of good memories.

I was one who hounded the powers-that-be that this movie (that pre-dates ME by a good 23 years!) be released on DVD. I was thrilled when I received notice that it was being released and I just received it today (funny since I just happened to catch it on TV two days ago!). It’s a timeless classic with a fantastic (and woman-empowering)plot based on a true story. I still can’t imagine how they managed with 12 children but it gives me the courage to deal with my two (who sometimes make the mess of 12!). A great story for homeschoolers too- the importance of education could not be more delightfully presented.

I was worried that the quality of the DVD might not be up-to-snuff but it was great (unlike the other classic-movie DVD I just purchased, Life with Father, another favorite movie but the quality is quite poor).

By the way, I haven’t seen the Steve Martin adaptation of Cheaper by the dozen but I’ve heard/ read that the storylines have close to nothing (other than 12 children) in common. Instead, invest in this classic and you’ll be very pleased.

If I could give it more stars, I would!!

Unlike the supposed remake put out at the end of 2003, this original movie adaptation of the book actually has heart, is entertaining without resorting to cheap shots or gross-out humour, and is overwhelmingly true to the spirit of the book. It might take awhile for the average modern viewer to get into it, though, since there really isn’t much of a plot, not the way we’ve come to expect in modern movies, just a narration of various adventures the family had. This is by far one of the best and most honest screen adaptations of a book I’ve yet seen, right up there with ‘Gone with the Wind’ and ‘Fiddler on the Roof.’ However, screen adaptations of books being what they have to be due to time and money constraints, they naturally couldn’t fit everything in, and so had to cut and paste some events from the book together so they wouldn’t completely overlook the important stuff (and unlike many cut and paste jobs in other book-based movies, here it was done very tastefully instead of randomly and carelessly), and they did leave out a number of the funniest stories in the book, like Bill pushing the Chinese cook into the oven and the so-called interviews which ran in the paper, much to the family’s horror that a lot of the things they supposedly said and did were made up to embarrass them. They also got the birth order of the last two mixed up; Jane was the last-born child in real life, and Bob was the penultimate. Still, given what passes for entertainment nowadays and how movies based on books usually bear little or no coherent resemblance to the story which the viewers know and love, this is a very clean and fun family movie.

Full Metal Panic Fumoffu, and Maburaho with the magical hi jinx. The series

follows mostly with Loki and the mystery of why he was banished to the human world by Odin and why the other norse gods are trying to kill him. Along the series Loki will get into his group a young female wannabe detective by the name of Mayura Daidoji and they are also helped by the god Thor(But known to the other humans he deals with as Narugami). The series is funny with a serious storyline built in to it but nothing to hardcore like Ghost in the Shell or Death Note. The series box is good and the extra are decent but little which I mean is that you have the standard trailers and text less intro/ending songs you do get some commentaries from the Japanese director/producers/and some of the actors.

The video is full screen with 5.1 English audio and 2.0 Japanese audio both the English and Japanese voice actors are superb for this series.

The price is a little step so all I can say is wait until either the price goes down, you are willing to pay the price,or you find it at a store near you but an any case a great series well worth it…
