Spun-off from Animaniacs, ‘Pinky and the Brain’ has a fantastic concept that constantly bears fruit – Two lab mice (”One is a genius, the other insane” in the words of the theme tune) are constantly thwarted in their attempts to take over the world. Like Wile E. Coyote before them, they seem to eventually lose sight of what they are trying to do and why, and just use more and more outlandish ruses to reach their target (Brain as the Country and Western singer is my favourite).

The concept itself may not have worked if the characters weren’t so well written and performed. To my memory there was only ever three continuous characters in the show – Pinky, Brain and occasionally Snowball, a genius hamster and rival to Brain voiced by the late, great Roddy McDowell. With such reliance on a small cast (the rest of the characters featured – the humans – were different every week), the creators worked hard to get them to be well-rounded and likable (although they are essentially villains – at least Brain is anyway). That they came fully formed from Animaniacs is an even higher praise. The use of catchphrases helped make this show highly accessable (”Poit” and “Narf” from Pinky and “Yes!” from Brain as well as the opening exchange.

Elsewhere on this page, the show is described as “mindless fun” – not so. Fun, yes. Mindless, never. This was a show that had Looney Tunes sensibilites but with a brain (literally). Although the writing was hit and miss at times, it was never short of brilliant and the animation was much more consistant than its parent show which sometimes veered into amateurish. The theme tune is one that gets in the head and refuses to budge, and watch out for the definition of a new word in the end credits of every show.

If there is anyone in Hollywood reading this, I suggest a live-action movie version of this – its rife with possibilities! In the meantime, buy this and make the most of a largely forgotten gem of ’90s TV.

As a long time P&B fan I was thrilled to see the series finally coming to DVD. Many fans and would be purchasers have been concerned that this set is labeled as a “collection” of episodes instead of one or more complete “seasons”. Don’t worry! As has been noted in other reviews this set (Vol I) contains ALL of season 1 and most of season 2 (the last three episodes are missing) for a total of 22 episodes. Why did they do this?? I don’t “know” for a fact but I’m sure it is so that they can release 3 volumes of approxiamtely equal size. The show had 65 episodes total. That means 3 volumes each with 22 episodes (OK, so one of the volumes will have 21 episodes – nitpick, why dontcha!). So if you are a fan of the show, cast away your concerns and pick up this first volume ASAP!

For those of you who have never seen the show, expect to be pleasently surprised. This is one of those rare animated shows that appeals to adults and children equally (well maybe not equally, I’m sure I enjoyed watching it on TV more than my kids). The Brain is a super intelligent, meglamaniacal lab mouse intent on taking over the world with schemes that would make Rube Goldberg proud. His sidekick Pinky is affable and kind hearted but somewhat dim wited. Think of them as the animated versions of Laurel & Hardy or Abbott & Costello.

It is so gratifying to finally see a major motion picture made about the WWII Russian Front. After all, it was the Red Army that inflicted 80% of Germany’s total casualties in the war, a fact that many Americans remain sadly ignorant of. It is high time we get past Cold War attitudes and pay tribute to the heroism of the Soviet Union in its bitter but ultimately triumphant struggle against Nazism. _Enemy at the Gates_ is a movie of epic proportions, featuring good overall performances by a solid cast as well as a spectacular cinematic recreation of the bombed-out city of Stalingrad.

Still, the movie tends to drag at times, and could have been much better. The love triangle subplot was more of a distraction than anything else, taking up time that could have been better used to tell more of the awesome story of the battle of Stalingrad as a whole. Rather than simply having the German commander state, “These snipers are demoralizing my people,” it would have been nice to have actually “seen” a little bit more of how the actions of Zaitsev and the Soviet snipers wore down the vaunted German infantry. Regrettably, the duel between Zaitsev and Koenig seemed to be taking place in a separate reality than the war itself, almost giving the impression that both sides had an unwritten agreement to let the two rivals shoot it out without interference. Also, the abrupt ending gave no explanation as to how the Red Army, seemingly on the ropes throughout the movie, suddenly emerged victorious. It would not have taken much film time to explain how this came about: the tenacity of Stalingrads defenders drew the mechanized German forces into costly city fighting, allowing the Red Armys powerful reserves massed to the north and south to punch through the weak Axis flanks and encircle the Germans. Saving Private Ryan succeeded in telling much of the story of the Normandy invasion in a way that neatly complimented the movies plot. I wish that Enemy at the Gates had made more of a similar effort.

I know that dramatic license is a fact of life with historical movies, but it is way overdone in this one. The opening sequence of the Volga crossing is powerful filmmaking and is mostly accurate up until Zaitsev and his fellow soldiers enter the city. The following part about only every other man receiving a weapon and being sent of in a suicide charge is purely the stuff of legend, though, more fitting of the WWI Russian Army or a Soviet punishment battalion. The reality was that the Red Army in Stalingrad fought mostly in small detachments armed with submachine guns rather than rifles, moving stealthily amongst the rubble and ambushing the Germans in brutal house-to-house fighting. This sort of close-quarter combat, where the front lines were often separated by less than 20 yards (or even a mere hallway or staircase), would have played out on screen just as well (better, in fact) as the charge of the Red horde that is the stuff of popular imagination rather than true history. The conclusion of this scene is misleading, as well. The Soviets did shoot many deserters who attempted to flee the front lines, but this degree of harshness did not apply to survivors of a failed attack as shown in the film. The commanders of the Red Army were often brutal towards their men, but not quite that brutal. As for the way the sniper duel is finally brought to a close, with Koenig walking upright in plain view towards what he suspects is the spot where he has just shot Zaitsev dead, it is just ridiculous. Not even a rookie sniper would have made such a fatal error, much less an instructor.

The Soviet characters all share the names of actual people, but none are true to their real-world counterparts. Vassili Zaitsev was more of a natural leader than the movie gives him credit for, not just a shy boy from the Urals reluctantly pushed into the limelight. Danilov, the political officer, appears to have been crafted by the screenwriters almost solely in order to make a faddish intellectual statement about the pitfalls of Communist idealism. The real Danilov was shot (though not fatally) when he foolishly stood up to point out Major Koenigs location to Zaitsev, not in an act of suicide. Tania Chernovas on-screen character was the furthest from reality, though. She was actually a short, temperamental blonde who had previously fought as a partisan in Byelorussia and the Ukraine. A veteran killer by the time she arrived in Stalingrad and possessing a single-minded hatred of the Germans, the real-life Tania could hardly have been more different from the sensitive student/soldier who never actually fires her rifle once throughout the whole film. Also, Chernova was likely Ukrainian, not Jewish (only worth noting because of the widespread myth that most Ukrainians welcomed the Nazis as liberators from Soviet rule). Ironically, the character that seemed truest to reality was Major Koenig, a shadowy figure who some historians claim might never have existed.

Though I used most of the space here to criticize this movie, I guess the fact that I bought the DVD means that I nonetheless enjoyed it. I probably would have rated it better were I not such a Russian history buff. Do yourself a favor and take the time to read both _Enemy at the Gates_, by William Craig (a very readable non-fiction account of the whole Stalingrad campaign) and _War of the Rats_, by David Robbins (a novelized version of the sniper duel that is both a better story and closer to historical fact than this movie was). My main regret is that the films potential was largely squandered to make room for unneeded political rhetoric and melodrama. I only hope that its mediocre performance will not discourage film producers from backing other Russian Front projects in the future.

After many major Hollywood epics about the war on the Western Front (THE LONGEST DAY, PATTON, A BRIDGE TOO FAR, BATTLE OF THE BULGE, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN), it is long overdue that ENEMY AT THE GATES, centered on the pivotal battle for Stalingrad, should play to audiences … particularly American audiences.

The core of the plot is the personal duel between two expert snipers, the Red Army’s Vasily Zaitsev (Jude Law) and the German Wehrmacht major, Koenig (Ed Harris), the latter brought into the Stalingrad cauldron to kill the former before he totally destroys the morale of the German troops trying to capture the city. It’s a cat and mouse confrontation depicted with startling realism, though, in this case, the mouse is just as deadly as the cat. The rest of the film is just window dressing, especially the sappy love triangle between Zaitsev, political commissar Danilov (Joseph Fiennes), and a female Red Army sniper, Tania, played by Rachel Weisz.

The film, set among the rubble and destroyed factories of Stalin’s city, is visually stunning. The performances of Law, Harris and Fiennes are excellent, as is that by Bob Hoskins, who plays Joe Stalin’s political representative on the scene, Nikita Krushchev. My complaints center on the accents of the main characters, which don’t sound Russian by any stretch of the imagination, the previously-mentioned and totally superfluous love story, and the fact that the Krushchev is given way too much screen time at the expense of the Russian general, Chuikov, who doesn’t even appear, even though he was the Red Army’s military commander whose gritty defense of the city ultimately prevailed.

This story of the duel between Zaitsev and his German nemesis is based in fact, though a better telling of the tale is the work of book fiction, WAR OF THE RATS, by David Robbins. If you’re interested in this footnote to the Stalingrad struggle, the book is a “must”, and the film will serve as excellent visual reinforcement.

The story opens with a written disclaimer explaining why the famous Victorian-era detective is living and working in London of the 1940s. Sherlock Holmes’ appeal is timeless, the producers claim, and he is quite capable of entertaining audiences in stories set during the then-present day. They are, of course, correct, although the real reason for updating him was that it allowed the filmmakers to produce a series of propaganda films wherein the greatest British detective of all time goes head to head with German spies. When the sleuth emerges victorious (as he must always), he can make a patriotic oration that parallels the real world situation (the “there’s an East wind coming” speech from “His Last Bow” given here neatly ties in with the WWII theme). The format is a complete success. I love these films, as far removed from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original stories as they are. They may get many of the details wrong, but they get the heart right, and they have exactly the correct atmosphere.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Sherlock Holmes: The Voice of Terror! Click Here

The beginning film in this Sherlock Holmes series as produced by Universal jumps right into its Sherlock Holmes vs. the Axis Powers motif. The British government is stumped. At regular intervals, a radio signal is beamed into England from somewhere in Germany. A pompous voice (of terror) gloats about terrible acts of sabotage that then simultaneously occur. The British Intelligence agency, unable to locate the source of the broadcasts or prevent the acts of terrorism is forced to call for Sherlock Holmes.

Many of the films in this series were less mysteries, and more straightforward thrillers. This is no exception. In fact, this is one of the weaker entries in the series as far as its plot is concerned. The storyline relies a bit too strongly on leaps of logic and sheer coincidences; the climax is just a bit too silly. If you’re looking for a mystery in the style of the original Doyle stories, you’ll be disappointed. There’s too much that is held away from the audience, meaning that there’s not much left for the viewer to figure out before the detective does.

But where this film succeeds is in its style, regardless of its actual substance. A lot of the story takes place in dark rooms, smoky bars and other sinister locales. The direction, lighting and cinematography are great. The scene in the saloon where Holmes (via a widow) turns a den of criminal elements into a force fighting for the Allies is particularly strong. The director plays the visuals for all they’re worth; the craggy faces of the outlaws peering out of the dark, raising drinks to their lips, while Basil Rathbone’s sharp features gaze out into the light. Scenes like this are what raise the film above the limitations of its plot.

The acting also serves to this film’s advantage. Honestly, I could watch Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce reading the phone book. Yes, I realize that Bruce’s interpretation of Dr. Watson is totally at odds with the original (in Doyle’s stories, Watson, while not the equal of Holmes, is an intelligent and insightful character, capable of logic and independent thought; on the other hand, one wonders how Nigel Bruce’s Watson manages to feed himself every day). But I don’t care; I think the two of them are great fun and play off each other well. Henry Daniell makes the first of several appearances in the Sherlock Holmes movies here, playing a member of the intelligence council.

The DVD features are rather light (there aren’t any), but the restoration that’s been done to the print is astounding. The picture couldn’t be any sharper and the sound is very crisp.

As the film reaches its conclusion, the plot holes become harder to ignore. It’s a pity because the movie has so much going for it. It is worth watching though, just because it is so successfully stylish. The propaganda elements aren’t at all distracting and in fact have become rather endearing as time has passed. This probably isn’t the place for a newcomer to the series, as there are better films to choose from. But fans of these Sherlock Holmes films will almost certainly enjoy it as much as I did.

This entertaining little melodrama does a decent job of moving Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson from the Victorian comforts of Baker Street into the WWII London of blitzes and blackouts. I have been watching this movie off and on for over 30 years, and it has never looked as crystal clear as it does in UCLA’s stunning print. Sound is sharp and clear, too, with some lines of dialogue understandable to my ears for the very first time. Speaking of dialogue, it’s quite an indictment of today’s Idiots-R-Us culture that a cheap B-movie from 60 years ago sounds like Shakespeare now. For example, when Basil Rathbone’s Holmes reminds Thomas Gomez that the English believe every life has value, the sweaty little Nazi sneers “A quaint notion of an even quainter nation.” Not bad. The plot purports to be based on Sir Arthur’s wonderful endpaper Holmes story “His Last Bow,” but it uses nothing beyond the villain’s last name and the great closing lines. In its day, the British were outraged at this movie, with its suggestion of treachery and treason at the highest levels of government, and the country owing its salvation to the noble bravery of a prostitute. Doesn’t sound so shocking now, does it?

A genuine pity that this delightful animated version of Jonathan Swift’s classic has been so abused in this purported “restoration.” Aside from the excessive clean-up which wipes away the details along with the scratches and leaves a very flat look (albeit with bright colors), the movie has been cropped and geometrically distorted to an aspect ratio of approximately 1.66×1. Virtually all Hollywood films made prior to 1953 were shot and composed for the much more square 1.37×1 screen (just about identical to the older 4×3 TV sets). For years movie fans have badgered TV stations and video companies to letterbox post-1953 widescreen films so as to avoid cropping important information out of the image. Now that we have widescreen TVs the opposite problem exists and it’s the movies made prior to 1953 that will suffer as the tops and bottoms of the image will be removed (or the image geometrically “squished”). If you care about movies please don’t support this practice, and avoid this product.

This is a terrible redo. They took a 4:3 frame and stretched it. Never do that. Leave it in its original format. E1 is not up to snuff to do this apparently.

This version of Ponyo is a bootleg from China… just so you know what you’re buying.

Hayao Miyazaki is one of those rare directors who can take the magic of nature and childhood, then somehow capture it for the screen.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Hayao Miyazaki’s Ponyo – w/English subtitles! Click Here

And his tenth Ghibli movie “Ponyo” is no exception — it’s a reimagined tale of a “little mermaid” who wants to become human so she can be with a little human boy she loves. It’s a simple story told in a simple manner (occasionally TOO simple), but it has a lush oceanic beauty and an innocent sweetness that really capture your heart and imagination.

A little boy named Sosuke finds a tiny “goldfish” with a human face on a beach, trapped in a bottle. He names her Ponyo, and goes to great lengths to care for his little fishy friend.

But then the sea wizard Fujimoto, Ponyo’s overprotective dad, appears and snatches Ponyo back into the sea — and she decides that she wants to become human so she can be with Sosuke. Having tasted a bit of Sosuke’s blood, she sprouts chickenleggy limbs and starts to change, but inadvertently disrupts a magical well that causes the moon to drop, the seas to rise over the land, and prehistoric magic to rise once more.

Sosuke and Ponyo are delighted to be reunited, despite the raging storm that is engulfing the city and causing ships to go missing. While the children go searching for Sosuke’s missing mother, Fujimoto struggles to fix the balance of nature before the entire world is destroyed, with the help of Ponyo’s sea goddess mother. The only hope of restoring balance lies in Ponyo and Sosuke — and if Sosuke’s love is not true, then Ponyo will be reduced to sea foam.

Compared to Miyazaki’s other movies, “Ponyo” is a very simple story — it’s basically a boy-meets-fishgirl story, with lots of children running around being adorable and exquisite looks at the sea. Even its theme is simple — the story is dependent on on true selfless love and how it knows no boundaries of age, experience or even species. Not to mention parents letting go of their children.

If there’s a downside to the story, it’s the lack of internal conflict. Example: the “test” that Fujimoto and the sea goddess use for Sosuke… well, it’s far less impressive than it seems.

And Miyazaki does not disappoint animationwise — he conjures a waterworld of luminous sea life, sparkling ships, prehistoric creatures, finned submarines and a town that has been swallowed by the sea (complete with boats floating over the rooftops). It’s an exquisite piece of work that turns the ocean into a magical, otherworldly realm where wizards work in coral-encrusted towers and shimmering jellyfish take little mermaids to the surface.

Ponyo herself provides a lot of the movie’s charm — she’s effusive, hyperactive, has a babylike fascination with the human world (”HAM!”), and an array of handy magical powers. Sosuke is a likable lad who is fascinated by Ponyo and her world, and Fujimoto makes a enjoyable anti-hero — spindly, gaunt and with a mane of messy red hair, he’s like a rock’n'roll embodiment of parental stress.

“Ponyo” is simpler and more childlike fare than most of Miyazaki’s past films, but it’s still a sweet and lushly-animated piece of work. At the very least, it will transport you to a magical childhood.

Please ignore the technology debates. This is one of the very best IMAX films ever produced, and one of the best documentaries- in ANY format- on the Amazon ecosystem in all its glory. It is simply unsurpassed in its depiction of the awe-inspiring variety and scale of these legendary forests; all that’s missing is the heat & humidity. Rather than the usual stupefying one-note narratives of conventional IMAX films, this one has real stories about fascinating people. The photography is stunning, the music is excellent, and the price is unbelievably fair. You can’t miss with this one.

This film is even better than the Coral Reef film I bought. It has much sharper and interesting imagery and the story is not dumbed down like in the reef film. This film is an excellent demo film for hdtv and it has some of the most fascinating images i have ever seen.

…I was quite disappointed w/this DVD.

First, the good stuff: The animation of the new scenes is lovely; the colors & design are brighter and crisper than in the original anime. It’s really the only reason I gave it 3 stars instead of 2. The extra scenes are interesting, but don’t add that much to the original series.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Death Note: Re-Light, Vol. 1 – Visions of a God! Click Here

OK, now the bad stuff: This is basically a clip show, following just over halfway thru the anime (where a particularly lovable character dies). It’s framed by Ryuk telling the story to another shinigami. But that’s about it.

I’d had high hopes for this DVD (given the description), but, alas, they were dashed [siiiiigh].

I’d recommend this for (a) Death Note completists, or (b) someone who doesn’t want to invest the time in watching the entire first half of the original anime.

The description of this DVD basically implies the “re-telling” of the Death Note series through the Shinigami’s, Ryuk, perspective. In actuality it is nothing more than a “movie version” of the first 20 episodes of this 37 episode anime. There are some brief original footage with Ryuk “conveying” the story to another seemingly disinterested shinigami, but the bulk of the footage comes directly from the episodes.

For people who have already seen this anime or have the full 37 episode anime series this DVD is simply a waste of money. I would only recommned this DVD and it’s sequel to those individuals who are interested in this anime, but do not have the time to invest into watching the complete anime series; roughly 13.5 hours.

While the basic premise is provided, a lot of the nuances of the anime have been stripped out of this version, thus rendering the end product to be a sterile rendition of the original. In the end, this is a falsely advertised product since the story is not really retold from Ryuk’s perspective (Product description: “See through the eyes of a shinigami…”).

Once again Universal is short-changing their classics by cramming them onto double-sided, dual layer DVDs in order offer them at sell-through prices.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Marlene Dietrich – The Glamour Collection! Click Here

What’s wrong with this? This format (called DVD 18s) are very susceptible to random playback defects because too much info is being compressed into too small of a space. Their recent Abbot & Costello, Hammer Horror, and Night Stalker, and Bela Lugosi sets were notorious for freezing up during playback.

I have no issue with streamlining packaging, but who cares if the disk won’t play through? Most other studios who released to this format have already abandoned the practice for this very reason. Come on Universal, stop releasing inferior mechandise.

When you are buying classic movies on DVD, your main concern probably is the quality of the film transfers. Who wants to watch grainy, unrestored black-and-white films when such beautiful transfers of other films have been released (Now Voyager or Mildred Pierce, for example)? My point is all classic films deserve first-rate dvd transfers.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Marlene Dietrich – The Glamour Collection! Click Here

I am happy to report that the films in Universal’s Marlene Dietrich collection all look very good. The transfers are not perfect, and quite possibly could have been restored to a greater extent. However, the transfers look just as good as anything WB has been releasing lately. The transfers are about on par with titles from the Greta Garbo or Joan Crawford collections from WB; not perfect, but very nice.

My main complaint is there were not more Dietrich films in this collection. I would love to also have Shanghai Express, The Scarlet Empress, Desire, Angel, Dishonored, and A Foreign Affair. Hopefully, Universal will release a second volume with these titles.

Athough the packaging is attractive, it is cheap. The movies are crammed on two-sided DVDs. It’s mystifying why Universal saw fit to cram four titles on one double-sided DVD and one title (Golden Earrings) on one side of the other double-sided DVD (leaving a complete side with nothing on it). It seems a waste of DVD space to me; why not put three more titles in the set with that extra space? Or, for better picture quality, put one title on three DVD sides, and two on one side? My guess is they were in a big, careless hurry.

Luckilly, this is not that big of a deal. The films are here, they look good, and the price is a bargain! In these days, who can afford to spend all their money on movies? WB may be charging the cost of this set for one movie alone, and with about the same transfer quality. At least Universal gives us five films for the cost of one WB title!

It is impossible to put fully into words what Pioneer has done with this unbelievable (and totally complete) box set. Basically, they have taken an all-time favorite anime .. given it a digital remastering, along with Dolby 5.1 Japanese tracks (subtitled wonderfully I might add), along with a great job on the English dubbing, all 13 OVA Episodes, an interactive encyclopedia for Tenchi Fanatics and an unbeatable price. The animation is beautiful in the DVD format and extremely clear, which brings vibrant new life into this anime classic. Pretty much I would recommend this to any anime fan who hasn’t seen the series yet (you really have no idea what you’re missing out on!) or any Tenchi fan who would like to see this series in its ideal format. If you are new to the anime DVD scene like I am, make sure you put this set on your list of “to buy” collections ^_^ You won’t be disapointed!

I’ve watched only a few anime shows in my lifetime, traditionally sticking to the classics (e.g., Akira) at the recommendations of my friends. Tenchi showed up after I tried a few other recommendations such as Ghost in the Shell and Demon City Shinjuku (neither of which got me excited, except that Ghost in the Shell had nice visuals).

Suffice it to say that this anime has so won over my heart that, in a time when I’m trying to stay conservative financially, I have already bought the special edition OVA set and all three of the Tenchi movies and am committed to buying all of the TV series episodes to boot (for those like me who didn’t know, OVA stands for “original video animation”, and means it was a straight to video production).

You will feel the same after watching this series as you did when you finished reading the Lord of the Rings for the first time — you are entranced by the world…you will miss the characters like you do real people, because they are so expressive and genuine, and you’ll want to go back and visit them.

Tips:

1. You definitely want to watch with the original Japanese voice track. I have watched with both English and Japanese and though the English translation was faithful to the meaning, the emotion of the characters isn’t communicated like it is in the Japanese…also, the voice casting was just RIGHT. Can’t really explain it in words…

2. Watch on a high quality home theater system…this thing will stress every part of the system, every disk has very high quality soundtracks and incredible colors (both the wild and the mild — beautiful soft cherry blossoms in the foreground with a neon orange slashing death duel in the background…).

3. There is some mild nudity in this series – parts are not appropriate for kids (or at least they’ll be somewhat confused) which is a real shame because some of the characters (Ryo-ohki, Sasami, and Misaki) are soooo perfect for the little ones.

Now if I could only figure out who is more alluring…Ryoko or Washu?

I’m happy to report that Joy Ride is NOT just another teen slasher movie, nor is it a Scream clone, instead, it is one of the better thriller/horror film that came out of Hollywood recently. The Thomas brothers while traveling towards New Jersey decided to pull a prank on a stranger by using a CB radio, posing as a female they agreed to a midnight rendezvous with a trucker who calls himself ‘Rusty Nail.’ Hoping to get a good laugh, the brothers found instead that the joke is on them as they flees from the psychotic stranger out for revenge.

What makes Joy Ride scary is its believability, this kind of thing can actually happen, probably not to the extreme as portrayed in the film, but people do play jokes on each other constantly, and some do get carried away. Composed of a relatively young cast, Steve Zahn (Fuller Thomas,) Paul Walker (Lewis Thomas) and Leelee Sobieski (Venna) did a good job keeping the audiences attention glued to the screen, the pacing was actually well done because there was not a dull moment on this road trip. Unfortunately, with this genre there is usually little character development, which is true for Joy Ride, but it isn’t necessarily a bad thing here.

Joy Ride was an entertaining and short movie that doesn’t take itself too seriously, the direction was tight and the script was decent, it’s a great film for adults and teenager alike. Just remember, it’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt, and do unto others as you would have them done to you.

In “Joy Ride”, the Director John Dahl (Last Seduction, Red Rock West, Rounders)pounds you right from the beginning and never lets up.

It’s “Duel” updated for the millenium and for a contemporary audience.

Two brothers, Paul Walker (Fast and The Furious) and Steve Zahn (Shattered Glass) take a road trip to pick up Walker’s college girlfriend (Leelee Sobieski).

Using a CB radio, they play a practical joke on a trucker who turns out to be the biggest movie big rig psycho since Rutger Hauer planted a finger in C.Thomas Howell’s french fries.

What the trucker, whose CB handle is “Rusty Nail” does to exact revenge keeps the audience on edge for the film’s 97 minutes.

(Note: one of the sequences in the chillingly directed and edited climax cribs gleefully from “Silence of the Lambs”)

Dahl pulls of the the difficult challenge of blending scares with a few laughs with little effort..he’s a wildly talented director with a taste for hip, off beat material.

Dahl directs from a script by JJ Abrams (”Lost”) and Clay Tarver

The voice of “Rusty Nail” is supplied by the great Ted Levine.

Note: not long before “Joy Ride” began shooting, the studio decided it wanted a different ending, supposedly a few alternate endings were shot, one of which, running 29 minutes, is included on the DVD which also includes Eric Roberts vocal audition as Rusty Nail…Roberts obviously lost the gig to Levine.
