Said to provoke violence, this film about 1955’s brutal and vicious NYC school system remains taut and effective to this day. The direction by Richard Brooks is groundbreaking. Based on Evan Hunter’s novel, Brooks tackles the idea of contempt for authority within the school system as a problem with a distinct solution. That solution comes in the form of an idealistic new teacher played with effective restraint by Glenn Ford. Sidney Poitier and Vic Morrow portray the two major protagonists from the class of intimidating and delinquent juveniles. Sidney Poitier is the one weak link that Ford realizes he can reach. Poitier is antagonistic and disturbingly introverted but not truly dangerous. Vic Morrow is malicious and a real threat. Vic Morrow’s performance is intense, riveting and absolutely convincing. Vic Morrow’s talent as one of our finest actors seems long forgotten and certainly has gone unrecognized for too long now. His performance here is testament to that and adds to the shock value of this film. The very effective acting is convincing setting a benchmark for this genre on society’s problems in urban education. In all, that is the point of this film. It is all about the strong and the weak be they teacher or student trying to survive in this setting.

I saw this movie in 1955. It was one of the best in that age in the genre about alienated youth, dealing as it did with ghetto kids and minorities rather than the spoiled brats of “Rebel Without a Cause.”

Most of all, the movie introduced me and a million other kids to Rock and Roll. I remember listening spellbound to “Rock Around the Clock” by Bill Haley and the Comets at the end of the movie. Something, I perceived in my little noodle brain, had changed — and nothing would ever be the same again.

Okay…this is an improvement over the previous box set…as the films feature a greatly improved picture and sound options..BUT..the foreign sets available though amazon.co.uk have great packaging…very cool book and documentaries NOT included in this set…heck there are NONE on this set. I also note that while the menus look identical to the foreign set (I guess you can tell I own both?)…to watch it with the original language and English subtitles…on the foreign set they are below the picture on these…ON THE PICTURE? ..why? when you have a widescreen do you need to put the subtitles on the images? They didn’t on my import…

Buy,Download, Or Stream Bruce Lee Ultimate Collection! Click Here

this is a pretty half a…ed effort on 20th Century Fox. and I agree the last movie in particular is a joke and insult to Mr Lee. It doesn’t need inclusion.

I notice some folks take issue with “Imports” ..there is a difference between official licensed DVDs and “bootlegs” the items I am discussing are the DVDs available through Amazon.co.uk and are legit and its NOT just that there are extra DVDs for every movie but the picture is alarmingly BETTER (think BLURAY to VHS better) …the US set is worth the 10bucks you pay for it but if you are a real fan of Mr Lee and this series of movies you can own versions which run circles around what we are offered in the USA. This is not the only series of films which find better and more restored or better quality outside of the US…and this isn’t opinion but fact.

What can I say. I bought imports before and got burnt.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Bruce Lee Ultimate Collection! Click Here

Suffice it to say, this is possibly the next best thing to own. Here, you get to actually watch the movies in the original languages, with the exception of Game of Death and Game of Death II, but they were always done in English and is not a big loss.

Having the original Chinese language is great on many fronts. First off, the dubbing that was done before in English was horrendous as it always has been. Plus, some things are changed from the story line when they translate it as they try to match the lip movements to the English words.

Also, because of the translation, this sometimes causes other scenes to be thrown out. Case in point is in Way of the Dragon/Return of the Dragon. When Bruce’s character is standing outside the restaurant with his stomach growling, a man comes out and tells him to go on inside. In the American version, we see Bruce go in and then come out again, apparently after having eaten. Well, an entire scene was missed in where he goes into the restaurant to order food and can’t speak a word of English, but that’s what the waitress speaks in and what the menu is in. The entire exchange is hilarious. It also drives home the point that Bruce’s character is out of place in Rome which makes more sense with many of the scenes in the movie which seemed strange when spoken in the English language.

Now, it would have been nice to have more “extras” other than the filler stuff they have here, which is basically slide shows, trailers and interviews with people. I understand the import versions have much more, but for me, this coupled with the 2-disc Enter the Dragon DVD makes my Bruce Lee collection complete.

With the Ultimate Collection, you get a new 5.1 English soundtrack but at times, it sounds funny during the fight scenes. Specifically, it sounds like the fight is taking place in a tunnel with the reverberation turned on a little too much I guess. It can be kind of distracting and disorienting with the way it sounds, but it’s not a total loss. Still, the Chinese soundtrack is better. Different music and it just flows better.

The Chinese soundtracks are fine and make the movies much more enjoyable for me because you get to hear the true emotions of the actors. Some have complained about the subtitles being within the movie rather than in the black bars below. This is because these movies are in anamorphic wide screen, so on a HDTV, you’d have no black bars. To me, it’s not that bad. That’s how it would have been in the theaters to begin with anyways.

The picture for each of the movies are great, with the exception of Way of the Dragon. Early on, parts of it are fuzzy and out of focus. Now, this could be due to the camera shot itself because it’s not the entire shot that’s out of focus, but it’s not enough to be completely horrible or unwatchable. But, after you get past that point in Way of the Dragon, the picture is great just like in all the other movies.

The only unwatchable things are the Game of Death (minus the final fights with the REAL Bruce of course) and Game of Death II and we all know why that is. If you really want to see how the Game of Death fights were, get the 2-disc Enter the Dragon DVD which contains at least 30 minutes of the fights in the order they would have happened, including his side kicks that were supposed to come along with him but were left out of the GOD movie for obvious reasons. It’s a very interesting introspective on what Bruce was trying to envision with Game of Death and it’s a shame it was never completed the way he wanted it. Plus, all the interviews up to that point are great, with Chuck Norris, Kareem Abdul Jabar and so many other former students and martial artists that knew and worked with Bruce Lee.

To me, this set is worth 4 stars. It could have gotten 5 stars with some extra content and the strange 5.1 sounds hurt that as well, but overall, this is worth having. Couple this with the 2-disc DVD of Enter the Dragon and it’s completely worth 5 stars.

There is no better bargain in the states than this.

This big movie pack is just the combination of Western Legends 50 Movie Pack and the Cowboy Legends 50 Movie Pack. Both of these packs are very good public domain packs if you enjoy old Western movies and serials. The pace is good in nearly all of the films, and there are quite a few famous stars of the old western movies such as Hoot Gibson, Tex Ritter, Roy Rogers, and even four John Wayne movies from before his big break in “Stagecoach” in 1939. If you go to the parent products of this movie pack you can easily find the names and ratings of all of the movies, so I won’t repeat that information here. The breakdown of films by decade is as follows:

1930’s – 55

1940’s – 39

1950’s – 5

1960’s – 1

The best movies in the pack are:

Big Boy Rides Again (1935) – Guinn ‘Big Boy’ Williams

Call the Mesquiteers (1938) – (Three Mesquiteers)

Ghost Town (1936) – Harry Carey

Harmony Trail (1944) – Ken Maynard

One-Eyed Jacks (1961) – Marlon Brando/Karl Malden

The Ranger and the Lady (1940) – Roy Rogers

Riders of the West (1942) – (Rough Riders)

West of the Badlands (”The Border Legion”) (1940) – Roy Rogers

Below the Border (1942) – Buck Jones

Buckskin Frontier (1943) – Richard Dix

Forbidden Trails (1941) – Buck Jones

The Legend of the Lone Ranger (1952) – Clayton Moore

The Range Busters (1940) – Ray Corrigan

Red River Valley (1941) – Roy Rogers

Ridin’ Down the Canyon (1942) – Roy Rogers

The oldest films in the pack were made in 1930, and they can be hard to sit through due to the halting nature of dialogue and action in early talkies. However, watching the evolution of the sound western is part of the fun too. You’ll also see some unlikely stars for western films such as silent slapstick comedian Al St. John in “Billy the Kid’s Range War” from 1941 and Lou Gehrig in 1938’s Rawhide. If you’re a fan of the old western movies that used to be a staple of Saturday TV back in the 50’s and 60’s, I highly recommend this pack.

He’s back! Everyone’s favorite rumpled detective, Lt. Columbo (portrayed with iconic perfection by Peter Falk), returns in this boxed set of some of his more recent mystery investigations.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Columbo: Mystery Movie Collection 1990! Click Here

Universal has been releasing the Columbo – Mystery Movie Collection on DVD. This DVD boxed set continues where the last one left off with installments that were produced in the 1990s. When I initially posted this review, I made an error and listed the episodes expected in the NEXT DVD boxed set, not this one. Thanks to Mike, Tom and Michael Todd for correcting this information.

For some viewers, these latter installments of the dirty-trench-coat-wearing, cigar-smoking sleuth are less satisfying and well-crafted than the original series, but for me, ANY Columbo is better than 99 percent of the current TV roster.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Columbo: Mystery Movie Collection 1990! Click Here

The six mysteries in this boxed set were the last to be produced in the miniseries format, meaning the episodes each run about two hours, while the remaining Columbo mysteries produced were originally shown as one-shot 90-minute movie length specials and are yet to be released on DVD.

Collected here are:

Columbo Cries Wolf (which originally aired Jan. 20, 1990): Two true iconic soap opera actors, Ian Buchanan and Deidra Hall, star in this episode as feuding business partners. Hall ends up dead and Columbo has to use all of his skills to “uncover” the crime.

Agenda for Murder (which aired Feb. 10, 1990): Fabulous actor Patrick McGoohan who has wowed fans since the 1960s Danger Man, is also a close friend of Falk’s. That’s very lucky for Columbo fans, because he has graced the series with some of the most memorable episodes of the series. This time out, he directs AND stars as a powerful attorney who has political aspirations – and a big secret. Soon, a longtime blackmailer is dead and Columbo is matching wits with an attorney who has never lost – until now.

Rest in Peace, Mrs. Columbo (which aired March 31, 1990): In an unusual episode, Columbo is the target in this episode. A vengeful woman wants him to pay for the death of her husband, whom Columbo arrested for murder and whom has recently died in prison. Look out for a classic Columbo twist at the end.

Uneasy Lies the Crown (which aired April 28, 1990): Iconic TV writer-producer Steven Bochco (famed creator of Hill Street Blues) wrote this story about a dentist who does away with a patient – who just happens to be his wife’s lover – in a creative way. Look for a couple of fun cameos by Nancy Walker and Dick Sargent who play themselves.

Murder in Malibu (which aired May 14, 1990): A famed romance writer whose engaged to a much younger man (Andrew Stevens) learns that he is only after her money, so she calls off the wedding. Exit the author during an apparent burglary. Brenda Vaccaro guest stars.

Columbo Goes to College (which originally aired 12/09/1990): Columbo is on campus as a guest lecturer on criminology. His visit coincides with the machinations of two rich and arrogant frat boys (portrayed by Justin Rowe and Cooper Redman) who utilize “remote control” to kill the professor who’s threatened to expel them. The obnoxious killers flaunt their intellectual superiority before the seemingly dull Columbo, who they are stunned to learn is a lot smarter than he looks. Look for the brilliant actor Robert Culp (I Spy), who himself has portrayed a murder in three prior Columbos.

Some of the mysteries yet to be released on DVD include: Caution: Murder Can be Hazardous to Your Health (which originally aired 02/20/1991); The Murder of a Rock Star (which originally aired 04/29/1991); It’s All in the Game (which originally aired 10/31/1993); Butterfly in Shades of Grey (which originally aired 01/10/1994); and Undercover (which originally aired 05/02/1994).

Let’s hope that Universal continues to release these wonderful episodes, because there ALWAYS will be one more question!

Looking forward to the ‘class of 1990′ group. A couple of real classics!

Without a doubt, Shawn Spencer is the public’s favorite fake fictional psychic detective. Of course as far as I know, he’s also the only one.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Psych – The Complete Second Season! Click Here

But that doesn’t stop the second season of “Psych” from being a rollicking good time, full of crazy schemes and baffling murder mysteries. James Roday and Dulé Hill actually become even more entertaining, with less slapstick and more of a reliance on eccentric plot twists, pop culture references, and crimes that get ever weirder.

Shawn (Roday) and Gus (Hill) get swamped by reality pop culture when American Duos comes to Santa Barbara. The cruel British judge Nigel St. Nigel (Tim Curry) hires them to protect him, because he thinks that someone is trying to kill him.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Psych – The Complete Second Season! Click Here

A live wire and a poisoned sandwich later, Shawn agrees — especially when a drugged-out female judge almost dies. But out of all the people who loathe Nigel, which one tried to kill him? Then the police suspect that Shawn has lost his touch when he announces that someone was killed by a dinosaur, and is confronted by a sexy FTD psychic.

But that isn’t the last or least of Sean and Gus’s problems — a chop shop with secrets, bounty hunters, Gus’s parents accused of Yuletide murder, jockey deaths and fixed races, nanny-related robberies, electrocutions on the catwalk, and going undercover at a telenovela, a school for the gifted, and a retirement community. They even have a run-in with a wealthy, crazy woman that Gus drunkenly married on spring break years ago… and it turns out her new fiancee is a bit shady.

Finally, Shawn and Gus are pursuing one of their weirdest cases ever. First a security guard is suspected of stealing a 3000-year-old mummy — but then it appears that the mummy actually murdered the guard. Can Shawn figure out what is going on — with the mummy murder, the police chief, and his oddly-behaving father?

Although it didn’t break much new ground, the first season of “Psych” was very fresh and entertaining TV. Fortunately creator Steve Franks is sticking to the old adage: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” and the second season doesn’t deviate from what works — there’s still lots of comedy, spoofery, silly dialogue (”It’s spontaneous psychic krav maga!”) and enjoyable mysteries.

The first episode kicks things off a bit weakly, since the “American Idol” joke gets stretched out too far. Fortunately the mysteries after that get much more solid, deftly juggling even the funny-sounding plot twists (strangulation by mummy bandage? Refrigeration trucks?). You even get an endless parade of pop culture references, from Michael Jackson to “Shaun of the Dead,” James Bond to wikipedia.com. Gotta love that.

But the best aspect of “Psych” continues to be its kooky dialogue. Usually Shawn provides it (”I hunger for the meatballs the way a jackal salivates for an injured possum”), but other characters get to as well (”Hola. Me llamo Inspector Carlton Lassiter. Me gusta queso”).

Shawn and Gus remain an entertaining pair of twentysomething everymen, with Roday continuing to be eccentric, lovably charming and kooky — although Shawn gets quite a shock in the cliffhanger ending. And Hill gets more attention, with Gus pursuing models and faking psychic powers. We even discover a secret past involving sweater vests, spring break, and a drunken wedding — lots of fun.

And the supporting cast remains solid — Corbin Bernsen gets to participate in a couple of the cases as Shawn’s hard-nosed dad, sometimes in loud tropical shirts. Timothy Omundson continues to be entertaining as harder-nosed cop Lassiter. And Maggie Lawson rounds off the cast as the “enigma wrapped in a little blonde riddle” who is Shawn’s love interest, as well as a counterpoint to Lassiter.

The second season of “Psych” continues the eccentric crimes and equally odd crimesolvers, mingling comedy and mystery with only a couple weak spots. Sweet black licorice!

CAUTION: Watching Psych while enjoying milk may cause said milk to come out your nose. Please drink responsibly.

This show is freakin’ hilarious. There are a few sitcoms that have made me laugh, even one hour comedy/dramas that I have found amusing, but I have never watched a television show that has made me laugh as much or as consistently as Psych.

Shawn Spencer is a hyper-observant son of a police detective, who frequently calls in tips to the police hotline to solve crimes. After calling in one too many tips, the police bring him in for questioning. The head detective (”Lassiter a/k/a Lassie”) thinks that Shawn must be involved in the crimes to have given all the tips. To avoid arrest, Shawn tells the detective he is a psychic and the “spirits” give him the information about the crimes. Thus begins a beautiful relationship between the Chief, Lassie, Shawn and his best friend Gus. Shawn & Gus open “Psych”, their psychic detective agency which leads to all sorts of hijinx.

Thank you to everyone involved in making Psych and USA for airing it, because quite frankly it is the funniest show on tv, hands down. The cast is perfect, the premise interesting and the antics are hilarious! Just remember, avoid projectile milk. Now, who wants some pineapple? Are you a fan of delicious flavor?

The movie is without doubt a perfect union with mean streets and goodfellas. But let’s face it, why do we click into a certian HD DVD on amazon, we know whether or not we like the movie, right? We want the goods on the picture quality! Let me tell you something even if you can’t take the needed violence in this movie, get it. Even if you can’t stand all the foul language, get it. Even if you think Sharon Stone got her acting degree out of a cereal box, get it! Let me tell you something, this three hour epic looks mind numbingly stunning. I literally sat in awe at the sheer beauty of it, I mean what could possibly show of HD DVD picture quality than vegas’ bright lights and scorsese’ masterful direction? Casino, that’s what. Do yourself a favor and get this disc right now because if you don’t; Nicky will come back with a bat and if you beat him with a bat, he’ll come back with a knife and you beat him with a knife, he’ll come back with a gun and if you beat him with a gun, you better kill him because he’ll keep comin’ back, and back until one of you is dead.

I mean that statement in two ways. First, in my humble opinion, this is Martin Scorcese at his finest. This is better than Goodfellas by a wide margin. All of the regulars give awesome performances in this (even Sharon Stone, who I can’t stand!). If you like mafia pictures, this is the BEST one to own. I also mean that it’s a great picture due to the fact that it’s on HD-DVD. The picture is astonishingly vivid and clear and the lights of Las Vegas really jump out of the television. It’s almost 3-D ! The extras are ample, but I’d say adequate. That’s the reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5. There is the obligitory commentary, deleted scenes, and a couple featurettes. It’s all whipped cream and a cherry on top of an excellent sundae ! I do like that you can watch the extras and the movie at the same time with commentary running. This and Batman Begins are the reasons you should own an HD DVD player ! Note: I have the HD DVD drive attached to my Xbox 360 and it works brilliantly !

“Set Antics”: Outtakes And Other Absurdities

Subtitles: French, Spanish

Disc Two: Digital Copy of Feature Film

There are two deleted scenes with optional commentary by director Anne Fletcher and writer Peter Chiarelli. There is a nice scene with Andrew’s parents (Nelson and Steenburgen). We also see Margaret and Andrew getting a little more comfortable with each other. They are nice enough scenes but not essential and one can see why they were cut.

There is an alternate ending with optional commentary. Fletcher and Chiarelli talk about why they didn’t use this ending and another one that they didn’t use as well. The humour in this scene is much broader than the rest of the film and seems out of place.

“Set Antics: Outtakes and Other Absurdities from The Proposal” is a montage of the cast goofing around on set. It looks like they had a lot of fun making this film.

Finally, there is an audio commentary by Fletcher and Chiarelli. They start off explaining the dichotomy between the two main characters. Fletcher says that Bullock loved the screenplay and gave Chiarelli all kinds of notes to make her character nastier. He talks about the mechanics of the story while she talks about the challenge of working on location. This is a fairly decent track by two people clearly proud of their film.

Louis Malle’s controversial 1958 film, The Lovers (Les Amants), tells the not-so-scandalous-by-today’s-standards story of a middle-aged, French woman (Jeanne Moreau, Malle’s love interest at the time), who leaves both her boring husband, Henri (Alain Cuny), and her Paris lover, Raoul (José Villalonga), for a younger man, Bernard (Jean-Marc Bory) after a night of passion with the stranger. “There’s no resisting happiness,” she explains (which left me less than convinced). The sexually frank film resulted in a U.S. Supreme Court case defining “obscenity.” (”I know it when I see it,” Justice Stewart wrote in the Court’s landmark decision, Jacobellis v. Ohio, 378 U.S. 184 (1964).) This film not only established Moreau as a star in the ’60s, but permanently associated Brahms Sextet in B-flat Major with Moreau’s sexual abandon in the film. (While Brahms plays, Moreau appears in a half-naked tryst.) Moreau provides a voice-over narration for the film to reveal her character’s feelings. Henri Decaë’s crisp black and white cinematography is luminous. Although I have given this film a five-star rating, the story is conventional by today’s standards.

The Criterion edition features a newly restored transfer of the complete, uncensored film; a selection of archival interviews with Louis Malle, actors Jeanne Moreau and José Luis de Villalonga, and writer Louise de Vilmorin; promotional material from the U.S. theatrical release; and a new essay by film historian Ginette Vincendeau.

G. Merritt

I have seen this film when it first came out some 40 years ago and I will never forget it. It proves that a love making act can be presented with an autmost purity and sensitivity, and without the need for pornography.I cannot wait for it to be released again.

ALL I WANNA DO (which is also known as THE HAIRY BIRD) is a loving and hilarious look at the swinging 60’s, featuring an impressive script and direction by Sarah Kernochan and a capable, strong cast.

Odette (Gaby Hoffmann) has just been shipped to Conneticut and Miss Godard’s School for Girls. Run by the kindly Miss McVane (Lynn Redgrave – GODS AND MONSTERS) the school is a sanctuary for the girls who will have to take a second place to men when they eventually have to leave and go into the real world.

Odette falls into the outsiders group known as the Daughters of the American Ravioli – trouble-making Verena (Kirsten Dunst), brainy Momo (Merritt Wever), sex-hungry Tinka (Monica Keena) and the almost-pathelogical Tweety (Heather Matarazzo).

When Tweety accidentally discovers the plan to merge Miss Godard’s with a neighboring boy’s college, they put a huge and potentially dangerous plan into action to get rid of the “hairy bird”…

A clever and canny comedy filled with superb performances. Standouts in the cast include the wonderful Heather Matarazzo and the fantastic Monica Keena. The film also features Rachael Leigh Cook and Rosemary Dunsmore (ANNE OF AVONLEA).

Most teen comedies nowadays are so mindless, unfunny, and unrealistic that they aren’t even worth watching. Although this movie is pure “chick flick”, it’s nothing like today’s teen-sex comedies starring Chad Michael Murray, Lindsay Lohan, and Hilary Duff.

“All I Wanna Do”, set in the early sixties, tells the story of Odette Sinclair, who is sent to an all-girls boarding school after her parents discover her plans to have sex with her boyfriend. Though reluctant at first, Odette befriends the school’s biggest troublemakers, Verena, Tinka, Tweety, and Momo. They have their share of adventures with the boys, their classmates, and their teachers. But the girls aren’t prissy–they’re smart, sassy, funny, and ambitious, and when they find out that their school is merging with an all-boys academy, they pull off their biggest heist yet.

The acting in “All I Wanna Do” is brilliant; the writing is smart, funny, and filled with political humor of the 60s; the characters are real; and, the movie is funny, sexy, and memorable. It’s a level above the standard teen-sex romps, more mature but still fun for younger and older teens. You can watch it again and again over the years and find something new with each viewing–”All I Wanna Do” is definitely worth your time.

This is a very funny film with a strong cast of characters, lead by Terry Thomas and Tony Curtis and more than ably supported by Eric Sykes, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, Gert Frobe, Susan Hampshire, Walter Chiari and more.

Thomas is at his fiendish best, Curtis is charming, Hampshire gorgeous and Cook and Moore are hilarious.

This is real enjoyable romp…..much better than it’s predecessor “Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines” and almost as good as “the Great Race”

It was such a pleasant surprise to see this one released…FINALLY !!

Even my kids enjoy it, so the comedy has not lost any of its shine over the decades.

Recommended Highly, Have Fun.

This movie is a perfect companion to Tony Curtis’ other auto car race movie, The Great Race. The package shows the aspect ratio as 1.78 widescreen, which would fill the whole screen of a HDTV. The actual ratio shows as it should be having been filmed in Panavision as 2.35:1.
