My boys (4.5 and 2 year old) absolutely love The Zula Patrol. In the past, they have learned about planetary orbits and rotation, simple machines, characteristics of the planets in the solar system and so much more about space and planets from watching The Zula Patrol. This video is fantastic in that it has expanded their knowledge of eco-systems and life cycles. They have really learned while watching this video…knowledge that they have be able to apply beyond this video.

…So Tom tells us about half way through “The Knack…and how to get it”. Whether he speaks for the other characters or for humanity as a whole the viewers have to decide for themselves but it is just the sort of thing that keeps you guessing in this amazing film.

When someone askes me to name my favourite film I usually say “The Knack…and how to get it” which is almost always met with a puzzled look in responce; so few people have seen this movie, even though it won the main prize at Cannes the year it was made and was a popular and commercial success across the world, that you might be forgiven for thinking that perhaps it had been surpressed or maybe overtaken by fashion that lumped all the “Swinging London” films together and forgot them. Either way I think it is a neglected clasic that deserves wider recognision.

Taken from a not very successful play by Ann Jellicoe, that ran at the Royal Court experimental theatre for six weeks about a year before it was filmed, Charles Wood’s screenplay expanded the action away from the run-down house, which is at the centre of the play, to use London as the backdrop for the film; not tourist London but the back streets and slightly run down areas of Shepherd’s Bush. The true masterstoke was to give the running commentary by the old people on what the four main (young) characters are up to. This babble is so typical of the British attitude to sex sensorious, but at the same time obsessed and slightly regretting that they haven’t done it themselves that it is hillarious. This aspect of the film is clearly influenced by Dylan Thomas’ “Under Milk Wood” but used here it takes on it’s own identity. Charles Wood also has a small part in the film himself; he is one of the Guardsmen that Nancy encounters in their “Bear Skins” (pun fully intended) while trying to find the YWCA.

The performances by the main actors are all superb. Michael Crawford as the accident prone, sex starved Colin, living in his run down Victorian house, who careers from one disaster to another is clearly the reletive of Frank Spencer the character Crawford played to such great effect in the 1970’s “Some Mother’s Do ‘ave ‘em” before he went on to even greater success in West End and Broadway musical theatre.

Ray Brooks delivers a totally beliveable Tolan, the superior, promiscous man living on the top floor of Colin’s house who’s self confidence eventually leads to his own downfall. A year after making this Brooks was the male lead in “Cathy Come Home”, one of the most famous British television plays of all time, which shocked a nation by graphically showing the full reality of the homeless in the UK. It is difficult to imagine two more contrasting rolls.

Donal Donelly as Tom the manic painter and decorator who acts as the catalyst bringing the other elements of the film together. He was in some other 1960 movies including “Waterloo” but I haven’t seen him in anything for a very long time now.

Rita Tushingham always has a vulnerability about her and never more so than in this film as Nancy. She arrives in London and wanders haplesly around costantly being mis directed to the YWCA until she comes across Colin and Tom in a junk yard. As she comes to know the other characters she comes under Tolan’s spell until she suddenly finds she is in love with Colin. Tushingham handles her part well as she develops from the innocent new girl in town to the more confident woman at the end of the picture via a sort of breakdown after which she accuses all and sundry of “rape”. It is this aspect of the film which has drawn most criticim bringing with it accusations of misogyny. I don’t think that it is justified after all nobody gets raped they just shout it a lot!

John Barry’s score brings the whole film together; He uses a choir of womens voices and the jazz organist Alan Haven, who had previously enlivened the opening titles of “From Russia With Love”, to a variety of moods with one basic theme in 3/4 time. It is one of the most creative uses of music I can think of.

Richard Lester directed this gem of a film on location at break neck speed just as he had some months earlier with “A Hard Day’s Night”. His surreal imagination, sense of humour and love of scilent movies all combine to make one of the most original films ever made. Using black and white stock allowed him greater freedom to film in awkward locations as well as to experiment with over exposure so what started out as a budget restriction became a creative tool. There are some wonderful individual shots; at one point, for instance, Colin, Tom and Nancy are seen throwing stones in the river and there is a shot of their reflection it is only there for a few seconds but it is the composition of the film for me. It is rare to find a film which has good dialoge and creative cinamatography.

On DVD the film looks great even with so few extra features. I was pleased that there were suptitles as some of the lines of dialoge are a bit indisdinct and even as a native English speaker I’ve often wondered what they were.

One final thing. Whenever I’m feeling a bit depressed I often look at this film and it never fails to make me feel better you never know perhaps it will do the same for you.

Since everybody and his brother is out reviewing the recent re-release of Hard Day’s Night (including people who cannot tell John from Paul!) I thought I’d review Richard Lester’s other great film instead.

Richard Lester obviously learned to tell a joke at the knee of Spike Milligan. It’s a shame that the television shows he directed for Milligan (and Peter Sellers) in the 1950s haven’t survived the BBC’s notorious indifference to posterity. This makes it even more important that MGM has again made available this film that is now so politically incorrect I long ago concluded it was being surpressed.

This film won the Palm d’Or (best picture) at Cannes in 1965. It has more brilliant silent sight gags than most any three Buster Keaton pictures combined yet has so much verbal wit that you’ll likely be back to watch the film at least three times, just to make sure you really got it all, which I’m not certain is really possible. The running commentary on youth by the older generation is one of the most hilarious things I’ve ever heard (and I am amazed I’ve never seen anyone steal the idea for a lesser picture.) Listen carefully to the broken dialog in the teacher’s lounge where a spinsterish teacher worries no one wants to rape her and a boorish old male teacher reminisces over once hitting an unruly student right up the nose with a piece of chalk. The sight gags are more obvious, usually broad though occasionally subtle, with large parts of the film having no dialog at all, such as the sequence pushing the old bed frame across London, the sequence with which the film is most frequently identified (note that the bed turns white when they get pulled through a car wash).

The film is politically incorrect from the first shots of all the identically dressed girls queued up the stairs waiting for their turn in Tolin’s (Ray Brooks) room. (Tolin has guestbook in his room and asks women to keep their comments to a single word). School teacher Colin (Michael Crawford) is obsessed that he will end up one of the dirty old men who hang around the school yard to watch the little girls play sports. Tolin offers to let frustrated Colin share his girls if Colin, who owns the house, will rent the empty room downstairs to Tolin’s ladykiller friend, Rory, with everyone sharing in all the girls (we never do see Rory in the film but his presence keeps popping up in important ways). Before Tolin can move in his friend, however, a stranger, Tom (Donal Donnelly), a painter who paints white everything he sees, moves into the room on his own initiative. Releaved at not being drawn into the sex deal, but still wanting the knack of getting girls, Colin decides that his real problem is the size of his bed. Meanwhile, in the other story line, innocent Nancy (Rita Tushingham) has just arrived in London, where, in one of the film’s best sight gags, she soon gets an educating eyeful from a prostitute working the photography booth trade. Nancy has further adventures trying to find the YWCA, including a very funny sequence in a dress shop where a salesman gives the same seductive spiel to each customer, various silent gags involving getting around the streets, and a very strange encounter in a phone booth with a man taking a call about Rory. Finally, she encounters Colin and Tom out acquiring a large old bed, that Colin likes because of the noise it makes. The three roll the bed back to the house across London. But back at the house Tolin quickly puts the moves on Nancy just to show Colin how its done. And then it all gets even more politically incorrect in a hurry so I’ll leave the rest for those who watch the film. Let’s just say it has a nicely moral ending even if the commentary from the older generation disagrees (there are things on their clothes line you wouldn’t expect from three young lads).

Another review on Amazon describes the film as anarchic but I think that misses it. The jokes do come very fast and there are some decidely surreal sequences, some very stylish editing, and the occasional interupting fantasy. Yet somehow nothing ever seems so silly or outrageous that you completely lose some sense of reality. In this sense it is more Hard Day’s Night than Holy Grail.

The picture and sound quality of the DVD are very good despite the picture’s age. There is obviously a small amount of cropping of the original picture taking place though the aspect ratio is said to be the original 1.66:1. The DVD provides no extras beyond it’s very entertaining trailer. Since the idiots at Mirimax didn’t include Lester’s Running, Jumping, Standing Still film on the new Hard Day’s Night double DVD set, when it was on the earlier cheapo DVD release, it would have been awfully nice for MGM to include it here.

If you thought Luke Skywalker going back to Yoda to complete his Jedi training was cool, keep your panties on! Because this part of the Rurouni Kenshin series has evolved to become maybe my favorite part! Yes even over Shadow of the Wolf, Blind Justice, Innocence and Experience, and Fire Requiem! This disc contains the return of Hiko, Sejuro, only the coolest character in this series!! Also in this disc you will learn what it takes to pass on the Hiten Mitsurugi Technique from master to apprentice, and why there can only be one successor! When are they going to release a series based on his Hiko’s past exploits?? CUMMON MANGA KA! YOU MUST CREATE SOMETHING ABOUT THE PAST OF HIKO SEJURO…and maybe the later adventures of SOJIRO (when he leaves shishio’s juppon gatana)!

This DVD features the ending of the battle against Chou, Kenshin gets a new sakubatou and proceedes to his master’s hut in the mountains, here he begs his master to train him in the final secrets, and reunites with Kaoru and Yahiko

Hiko finally agrees and Kenshin’s training completes after a few episodes of Hiko yelling at him, the last episode is a bit of a cliffhanger when Kenshin masters the final attack

Kenshin’s past is dug into a bit, but if you have watched the Rurouni Kenshin OVA (Samurai X Trust and Betrayal) you will notice ALOT of differences, personnaly I think that both stories are good(the OVA one was a bit short)

Overall if you’re this far, don’t stop, it gets better

Metal Fighter Miku begins from a ridiculous premise: assume that sometime in the future (one that looks rather like our own, yet has some amazingly advanced tech tucked away in odd corners) one of the most popular sports in the world is … female pro wrestling, with the females in question wearing powered armor to make the combats more interesting.

Add to this the standard stable of characters in fighting-anime — the plucky main hero/heroine, the “handsome/beautiful one”, the “tough one”, and the “cute one”, and a nemesis bent on forcing a final confrontation, and you seem set for some pretty stupid, and pedestrian, fare.

Somehow, with all this going against it, Miku (like its eponymous heroine) triumphs against the odds. There’s something endearing rather than cloying about the characters. Yes, we know their general type, but the writers manage to make them separate, if not tremendously original, characters. Miku keeps the spotlight most of the time, but the other characters — even adversaries — often get enough screen time to make us feel that they’re not just cardboard props for Miku’s journey. As time goes on, you get the feeling that “something else” — you can’t quite define what — is going ON in this series, and that feeling gets stronger. Eventually, you find out, and while the “something else” isn’t at all unheard-of in anime, in THIS anime it comes as quite a gratifying surprise.

I was stunned to enjoy this one — cynical as I was about it — and having come to appreciate it as the simple but worthy entertainment it is, am glad to recommend it to others here.

What do you get when you put four pretty girls in mech suits and send them into a glamorous world of tag team wrestling? A sport to gain a huge following in Earth’s fictional future; and some great fight scenes to mix in with the sweet story and spunky laughs. Not quite the caliber of Ranma 1/2, but if you like that series, you’ll probably enjoy this one, too.

The middle DVD of the three in Banner of the Stars II continues the increasingly personalized story in this character-driven, intelligent science fiction. The results are satisfying and enjoyable, but leave the viewer anxious for the next disc and the conclusion of the story. It’s been interesting to see how the anime has developed over the long arc since the beginning of Crest of the Stars. The drama has narrowed in scope and sweep but has increasingly focussed on characters. Faced with crisis on the prison planet, Lafiel, Jinto, and even Admiral Spoor, who gets some quality screen time, all wrestle with issues of Abh honor, duty, battles and personal feelings. DVD extras again include notes from the original novel’s author. This series seems more enjoyable as it goes on; one can only hope that we’ll someday see “Battle of the Stars III” or that the novels get translated into English.

Whoopee! Glad they’re coming out with Season 2 later this year. That means I have roughly 6 months to save for this set!

As one may gather, I’m obviously an x-phile – how else can one explain a five-star rating for a dvd boxed set which isn’t even available yet? Heck, I’m still waiting for my Season 1 gift set order from amazon to arrive.

Here’s a rundown of the second season episodes:

1) Takes off from the season one finale. After the X-Files have been shut down, Mulder & Scully journey to Puerto Rico. 2) Introduces fan-favorite The Flukeman, a genetic mutation living in the New Jersey sewer system. 3) Residents in a small community suddenly become violent, apparently urged on by digital readouts ordering them to kill. 4) Introduces Alex Krycek (Nicholas Lea). 5) Mulder is in the middle of a hostage negotiation involving alien-abductee Duane Barry. 6) Continues from the previous; Mulder pursues Barry who has kidnapped Scully. 7) My personal favorite! Vampire-themed episode featuring Duchovny’s then real-life girlfriend Perrey Reeves. 8) Scully is found, albeit in a coma. 9) Deadly lifeform living in a volcano. 10) Agents investigate a possible connection between several teenager disappearances and a religious cult. 11) Strange unseen attacks in a nursing home. 12) The personality of a serial killer is transferred to his granddaughter 13) An “escalating fetishist” episode, where one’s relatively harmless “hobby” turns homicidal. 14) Satan worshippers pay for their laxity! 15) Voodoo episode. 16) Features horror genre fan-fave Brian Thompson (Fright Night, Kindred) as the alien boutny hunter. Mulder meets long-lost sister Samantha (or does he?). 17) Continues from previous. 18) Animal abductions from a zoo near a major UFO hotspot. 19) Partly inspired by “The Philadelphia Experiment”. 20) Great episode featuring circus acts, Jim Rose, and the Conundrum! 21) Possession story featuring the Romanian holymen the Calusari. 22) Plague-like epidemic sweeps a prison facility. 23) Killer shadows. For Marvel comics fans this recalls powers of characters such as Cloak and The Shroud. 24) A town hides a terrible secret. Hint – read up on the New Guinea Jale tribe. 25) Cliffhanger episode. Hacker obtains all the Defense Department’s files on UFO’s – encrypted in Navajo!

NO BRAINER – Get this set of one of the most fascinating sci-fi TV series of all time!

How does one begin to describe the perfection that is this second season of “The X-Files?” Speaking from the perspective of having watched these shows as they aired, anxiety and anticipation doesn’t begin to describe the four month wait between seasons one and two. In season one’s finale “The Erlenmeyer Flask,” we see a mere glimpse of how this television series can go from greatness and kick it up even higher to absolutely stunning. The X-Files are closed and we also lose “Deep Throat” in this episode, played by Jerry Harden who is an excellent actor.

Season two picks up with “Little Green Men” and the introduction to “X,” “Deep Throat’s” protégé and his replacement and Special Agent Fox Mulder’s inside source. We also get to start seeing the “Mythology” of the series start to take some real form. To hide the fact that the ever beautiful Gillian Anderson is pregnant, the producers come up with some wonderful filming techniques. Then to top it off they come up with the plot line for “Duane Berry.”

Every episode of this season qualifies as amazing, enthralling, stunning and any number of ways to describe that which is great. Some notables: “The Host,” because it’s just creepy and kind of like an accident, you don’t want to look at it but you have to. “Sleepless” because it has Tony Todd who, when he chooses the right parts, is such a wonderful actor. “Duane Berry,” “Ascension,” “3,” and “One Breath” for the masterful way the writers and producers skillfully scripted out Gillian Anderson’s pregnancy in Dana Scully’s abduction. Not to mention the wonderful job that Steve Railsback did in the role of Duane Berry. “Firewalker” because of its simplicity and the scientific curiosity it created. “Aubrey” because of its ability to surprise and scare you. “Die Hand Die Verletzt” because it makes you wonder what your neighbors are up to. “Colony” and “Endgame” for their X-Files mythology aspect, plus the scenes with the submarine were stunning. “Humbug” was their first attempt at humor and they carried it off with perfection. “The Calusari,” shades of “The Exorcist.” “Soft Light” in which Tony Shaloub gives an excellent performance playing a scientist that found a little more than he was looking for. “Our Town” just gives you the idea you don’t want to stop in the wrong town. “Anasazi,” what a wonderful season ending cliffhanger with the mythology in full stride. The only bad thing about “Anasazi” is that it was prelude to a four month wait to find out what happen next. “Colony” is also David Duchovny’s debut as a writer for the show.

The seventh disk also contains some wonderful and enlightening special features. The only true minor complaint that I can think to register about this DVD set is the case in which it comes. The outside cover has interior flaps that seem to incessantly get caught on the case that holds the disks. Thanks for sticking it out and reading through this.

After the release of Volumes 1 & 2 most fans were ecstatic to be able to own the first three and a half seasons of this classic animated series on studio released DVD. 62 Family Ties

Really every episode from this series can be considered a fan favorite but more noticable in this collection is the four part Beyond Good and Evil saga as well as The Phalanx Covenant, Sanctuary and Family Ties.

The audio & video quality we can expect will be the same as that of the first two volumes. Episodes tended to be in the same quality they aired with minor compression issues that go unnoticed by most and didn’t impede on my personal viewing enjoyment. Also the further we go into the series we should notice a slow steady improvement on the actual animation quality of the show.

There are no special features on these volumes but given the fact we’re dealing with Disney that’s to be expected. Television was better in the nineties. Thanks for your time.

* Rather than clutter up the review page I have included a list of episode summaries in my comments section for those interested.

In my opinion, X-Men, Batman TAS, Spider-Man, Animaniacs, Power Rangers, Eek the Cat, Bobby’s World, Tiny Toons and all the other shows that were featured on Fox Kids were the very best shows. X-Men, in spite of being a Saturday morning cartoon gathered very high ratings. In fact, it was so successful that it ran for a whopping 76 episodes with a total of 5 seasons, all the way from 1992 to 1997. In fact, it is the longest running Marvel animated show with Spider-Man being the second longest. X-Men has often been compared to Batman the Animated Series in terms of quality.

We can now witness more adventure as episodes from season 3 and 4 are now being released. X-Men closely followed some storylines from the comics. In this one, we witness Magneto building Asteroid M, a sanctuary for mutants, Wolverine battle Silver Samurai and the X-Men even clash in an epic battle with the immortal god-like mutant Apocalypse as he plans to reshape the universe in his own evil ways. We’ll even encounter Mr.Sinister as he teams with Apocalypse and Magneto who reluctantly battle along side the X-Men to battle Apocalypse.

X-Men is something for all ages. Kid and teens will love the action and adventure, while adults will appreciate the well written episodes and how some of them follow the comics. And of course, everybody will appreciate the top-quality animation created by some of the greatest animation studios of the day and everyone will love the nicely drawn awesome looking characters who bear great resemblance to the X-Men of comic book artist Jim Lee and writer Chris Claremont.

In case you’re a fan of X-Men, Marvel, good action, emotional scenes or epic battles of good vs evil or if you even watched this on Fox Kids during the fantastic era of the 90s, don’t miss X-Men! If you got the first volume and volume 2, then I,m sure you’ll adore volume 3 and volume 4 and if you haven’t experienced X-Men, it might just be a good time to grab both new volumes and prepare for epic adventures featuring Marvel’s mutant team.

Here are the episodes in this volume.

Proteus Part 1: A deadly mutant foe named Proteus who can warp anything it touches has been unleashed at Muir Island. The X-Men head to Muir Island to battle him.

Proteus Part 2: Proteus searches for his the Father who abandoned him as a child whilst Moira and the X-Men continue to try and him.

Sanctuary Part 1: Magneto establishes a sanctuary in space known as Asteroid M. But when the mutant Fabian Cortez overthrows him and takes over, the X-Men are called for assistance.

Sanctuary Part 2: As the X-Men battle Cortez who temps to take over Asteroid M, Magneto returns to reclaim his place on the throne.

Beyond Good and Evil Part 1: As Cyclops and Jean prepare to wed, Mr.Sinister drops by and kidnaps Jean and takes her to an unknown world and learns that Apocalypse has plans for her.

Beyond Good and Evil Part 2: The X-Men figure out that Apocalypse is after Psylocke and other mutants who posses telepathic abilities. They even have a run in with Angel. The X-Men must figure out why Apocalypse is after psychics.

Beyond Good and Evil Part 3: Professor Xavier and the X-Men are taken to a place known as the Axis of Time and realizes that Apocalypse plans to use the psychics to recreate the universe in his own will. Cable heads to the Axis of Time to stop Apocalypse once and for all.

Beyond Good and Evil Part 4: In the final part of this episode, an epic battle between the X-Men, the psychics, Cable and Apocalypse will decide the fate of the immortal mutant once and for all.

Have Yourself a Morlock Little Christmas: It’s Christmas time at the X-Men’s mansion and Wolverine, Storm and Jubilee have a run in with The Morlocks who have an ill member of the family. Will everyone have a happy Christmas? Will Jean survive the wrath of Gambit’s competitive cooking?

The Lotus and the Steel: Finding himself continually losing control, Wolverine takes a sabbatical to Japan, in an effort to find inner peace in temple-building. Instead, he faces a village under siege by a group of bandits and Silver Samurai, and struggles to help them without compromising his search for his true nature.

Love in Vain: Rogue’s childhood sweetheart, the boy whom she put into a coma when her powers first manifested, returns to her life unexpectedly. But what strange connection does he have with the bug-like aliens Wolverine encounters in the desert?

Secrets Not Long Buried: Cyclops visits an old teacher only to discover strange things about the town he lives in.

Xavier Remembers: Xavier’s concussion leads to more problems than a simple headache.

Family Ties: Magneto is summoned by his dead wife to a reunion, but all is not as it seems.

This box set will have for the most part the more humorous Naruto episodes before we reach the Shippuden arc. Off the start we have Tsunade teaming Naruto and Ino with a mission to help a feudal lords daughter who usually is an exact double of Ino but because of her nervousness of her impending marriage to a nobles son she has only heard about but never seen has eaten more than she should and has gain a little bit of weight, so not to disappoint her betrothed she hired Ino to stand in her place to impress her fiancee but she maybe surprised at how her fiancee really is though. Also we have Rock Lee starting his own Dojo but because few have heard of it doesn’t get to many students to train and when Gai sensei hears this and enlists Naruto’s help you know calamity is sure to follow. Than another team up of Team Kiba, Hinata, and Naruto to find the feudal lords daughter of the land of candy whose disappeared near their borders and to Naruto’s regret find themselves trapped in a seemingly haunted castle. Than team Gai teams up with Naruto again as someone with a past with Gai seeks revenge on him and decides to trick him into a ambush and with Rock Lee hurt again it’s up to Naruto, Neji , and Tenten to save Gai sensei, but as you expect with Rock Lee hearing that his idol is in danger goes to help to no matter what. We than have two arc sagas the first is a long time enemy of the leaf village who seeks its destruction sneaks into the village to begin his plans, but as Naruto befriends this saboteur he feels there’s more to this would be avenger than what the rest of the village shinobi aren’t seeing. The final episodes deal with a dark time of Kurenai’s past with another genjutsu prodigy from the leaf village and the tragedy of that relationship may destroy both herself and her relationship with her current genin team. The episodes were very entertaining no matter what other reviewers keep saying about the filler episodes as they continue to give you time to connect with the characters of Naruto and see their teamwork and friendship throughout the series grow. The voice cast did as usual a great job both the English and Japanese cast. So for any completest Naruto fans like me here’s another great box set for you home and for new comers I say try out the first box set and see if this series is your cup of tea because I really think it will be…

The Product got here in good time. But the box was slightly coming apart and the third disc is so scratched i need to get it re-serviced because it wont play through.
