Remember back when The X-Files was still fairly easy to understand?

Relive those magic (and sometimes goofy) moments with this new box set. Sure, half of it has already been released on VHS – but this set includes some gems that the first couple waves of home video ignored.

Remember the eternally creepy “Young At Heart”, or a few unintenionally silly episodes like “Space” or “Ghost in the Machine”? Or Nicholas Lea’s first X-Files appearance (although not as Krycek)? How about “Roland” or “Born Again”, which represent some of the finest moments from the first season? They’re all here, alongside other popular episodes like “The Erlenmeyer Flask”, “Deep Throat”, “E.B.E.”, “Darkness Falls” and “Ice” (which is essentially a remake of John Carpenter’s The Thing – but the X-Files does it better)!

For the first time in the U.S., you can finally buy a TV program season by season. And plus – these discs give you trailers, interviews and even some cool DVD-ROM content.

If only Paramount would do their Star Trek discs this way!

This set of 24 episodes from the third year of the X FILES represents what I think is the best overall season to date. Of course, when discussing a television show of the unprecedented high quality of the X FILES, “best” certainly is a qualified term. Every season, with the possible exception of the current one ( the jury is still out ) has maintained a high level of artistry and craftsmanship. In fact, I believe the X FILES is the single greatest show ever to be aired on television. In so many areas, whether it be writing, acting or the shear beauty of the production, this show is truly a miracle occurring in medium which, in truth, doesn’t often rise above mediocrity. The credit for this phenomenon is shared amongst many dedicated individuals, most working behind the scenes ( Chris Carter obviously deserves special mention, as the creator of the show).

For many seasons Carter maintained the integrity of an artistic vision that the Fox executives were smart enough to take a gamble on. Given the “franchise” nature of the X FILES, their gamble certainly paid off. And, if parts of the last 2 seasons have been rough ( a portent that the show will not necessarily fade gloriously into the sunset ) that does not take away from Carter and company’s magnificent achievement.

Although a casual awareness of the X FILES may bring to mind government conspiracy, aliens, “spooky” supernatural phenomenon, the core issues in the show are that of truth, faith, love, good and evil; those issues that have captivated mankind’s imagination for as long as it has had the capacity to record its artistic, philosophical and revelatory reactions.

Another very strong part of the X FILES’ appeal is obviously the complex relationship between Fox Mulder and Dana Scully; one needn’t be “married” ( pardon the pun ) to the notion that the show revolves COMPLETELY around some sort of nascent romantic relationship; it’s sufficient to acknowledge the respect, camaraderie and genuine love ( whether it’s romantic or platonic ) the two share. Mulder and Scully, two deeply serious ( however witty ) people help “ground” each other in their respective “quest” (s).

As good as the actors and production team are, the writers are the bedrock of the X FILES. And, if irony constitutes one of the primary elements in the work of great writers, the core writing staff can at least be described as striving for greatness. The self-reflexive humor constantly on display in the central characters of Mulder and Scully, superbly acted by Duchovny and Anderson, fleshes out the nuances appropriate to the background of these committed and eccentric personalities. Also, the 1013 team delights in a playful, “embedded” concepts that recur time and time again in the background of the show. Without going into ridiculous detail ( which others can document better than I can ) there is a certain archetypal X FILES “iconography”, which has developed more and more with each successive season. A fondness for neon lights or flashing sirens of ambulances and police cars; a humorously morbid fascination with the bathroom as a crime scene ( etc. ). One of the true beauties of the X FILES is that it so “layered” that one can appreciate it on any one of a number of levels. This is why it’s possible to watch these episodes over and over again and not be bored.

As far as this DVD box is concerned, the 3rd season’s consistency episode to episode is magnificent. The “mythology” two-parters are tightly written, beautifully produced ( amazing stunts and cinematography ). “NISEI / 731″ and “PIPER MARU/APOCRYPHA” are really “mini movies”. I’m still flabbergasted that these episodes could actually be prepared for television.

The “stand alone” ( or “monster of the week” ) episodes are equally well done. “OUBLIETTE” has a tremendously strong performance from David Duchovny and the guest actress; a real heartbreaker, this superior episode strikes me as a precursor to the more acclaimed 4th season “PAPER HEARTS”.

The ongoing exploration of Scully’s conflicted inner feelings ( manifested in her two “contesting” traits, scientific rationalism and religious faith )are nicely portrayed in “REVELATIONS”.

“PUSHER” deserves its reputation as one of the most popular “stand alone” episodes. Its famous villain, Robert Patrick Modell, has a favored place among the most memorable evil characters from the show ( Eugene Victor Tooms and Donnie Pfaster also come to mind ).

“QUAGMIRE” fits into a sort of outdoor or “forest” X FILES sub-genre ( first seen in Season 1’s “DARKNESS FALLS” and continuing in Season 5’s “DETOUR” ). All these “forest” episodes were hellishly difficult to film in Vancouver’s rainy woods but the results are yet another of the series’ delights; the location shooting is spectacular. In particular, the scene in “QUAGMIRE” with the “stranded” Mulder and Scully is priceless.

Then there are writer Darin Morgan’s three masterpieces, quirky and self-mocking yet at the same time strangely touching. In particular, “CLYDE BRUCKMAN’S FINAL REPOSE” and “JOSE CHUNG’S `FROM OUTER SPACE’ are two of the finest individual episodes in the entire history of the X FILES.

Inevitably, even in such a strong season, there are “clunkers”. To a certain degree, “DPO” and “2 SHY” fit this category but I consider “HELL MONEY and especially “TESO DOS BICHOS” as the worst of the 3rd season ( however, these two episodes, judged by the standards of other television programs, would be graded more leniently ).

The season closing cliffhanger,. “TALITHA CUMI”, displays the type of writing, acting and production strengths exhibited throughout most of the glorious third season. This was from a time when the myth arc was fresh and excitement among fans at a fever pitch waiting through the summer for the next developments.

Fnally, while it is legitimate to argue that Season 4 offered more opportunities for Gillian Anderson to develop the character of Dana Scully, Season 3 still ranks at the top for me. I’m partial to the variety and freshness of the stand alone episodes and the excitement of the mythology arc was never topped.

Well… Anchor Bay has done it again! This very cool box set of the cult classics – The Sleepaway Camp Trilogy has a cute “first aid” motif with bloody handprints on the slipcover. The red paint used on the slipcover for the blood actually FEELS STICKY, like real blood! Open the slipcover up and you have pictures of first aid items like band-aids, first aid cream, gauze, antiseptic wipes and the like with the DVD’s right inside. Utter PACKAGING GENIUS!

Also included is a “Sleepaway Camp Diary” that gives the history of all three films and includes addresses for cool Sleepaway Camp fan websites.

All three of the features are presented in widescreen with audio commentaries, still galleries, theatrical trailers, outtakes, behind the scenes, deleted scenes and MUCH, MUCH GORE!!!

You won’t believe the odd cast list in these fun movies! The first installment has a group of total unknowns with Felissa Rose as the shy, teenaged Angela. In the second and third installments Pam Springsteen (Bruce “The Boss” Springsteen’s little sis) takes over the challenging, over the top role of Angela. Also in the cast are Tracy Griffith (Melanie Griffith’s sister)who plays “Marcia”, Renee Estevez (sister of Emilio Estevez & Charlie Sheen)as “Molly” and even an Academy Award Nominee in Michael J. Pollard (Bonnie & Clyde, 1967)as a lusty “Herman”!!!

The names of the characters are references to the pop culture for the times, with names purposefully taken from “The Brady Bunch”, “The Munsters” and “West Side Story”.

The real star in these three pics, however, is the special effects! Great stuff, even compared to present day F/X. The soundtrack to Sleepaway Camp II, “Unhappy Campers” has the likes of Anvil, Obsession, and even the Dead Milkmen!

Sleepaway Camp III, “Teenage Wasteland” is a very bold and different teen slasher movie as most of the “slashing, hacking, stabbing and the like” is done in the middle of the afternoon with the bright sunshine of Camp Sleepaway making the blood run “redder than ever”!

If you enjoy The Friday The 13th series, “Slumber Party Massacre” films, “Halloween” movies, or other slasher movies in this genre, you will ABSOLUTELY LOVE Sleepaway Camp as it is really in a genre of it’s OWN (don’t wanna give away Angela’s REALLY BIG SECRET, you know)!

For goodness sake, don’t read the back of the box when you get this… it gives away the big secret of the first movie. I have no idea why they would do this. There ARE people who are interested in this, but never saw it, ya know?? I heard so many good things about this movie, especially about how there was a surprise ending, so I got the box set. Well, the first thing I did was read the back of the box… you wouldn’t think they would give away the MAIN secret on the back of the freaking box, but they did. This was a really good, cheesy, 80’s slasher film… with a surprise twist at the end… oh, did I mention though, that it is ruined by reading the back of the box??? I still really enjoyed the movie, even with the end being ruined for me, by the damn box it comes in. Soooo… take it from me… DO NOT read the back of this box before you watch the first movie. REALLY!!! It ruined what could have been such a freaking cool ending. In fact, during the whole movie, I felt I knew what was going on, but I thought, naaaa… surely that can’t be it… they wouldn’t say it on the back of the box… but yep… they sure did!! DON’T READ THE BACK OF THE BOX BEFORE YOU WATCH THIS MOVIE!!!! I really can’t stress that enough.

This quiet British film starring two of Britain’s most acclaimed actresses, Dames Maggie Smith and Judi Dench, is unabashedly a vehicle for these two leading ladies. Janet (Smith) and Ursula (Dench) are two unmarried sisters living on the coast. When one morning after a storm they discover an unconscious young man (Daniel Bruhl) on the rocky shore, their daily rhythms change as each woman develops a crush on the helpless man. Each vies for his complete attention. When Janet is able to finally communicate with Andrea in German (he is Polish), Ursula becomes consumed with jealousy and compensates by pampering him. Both, however, are pushed aside as it turns out that Andrea is a virtuoso violinist (music played by Joshua Bell), and the entire town in drawn to him. Even worse for the sisters, a beautiful visitor, Olga, discovers him as well, drawing him away from Janet and Ursula, into her own world.

Judi Dench is given more to work with than her co-star, and so comes across as the more complicated woman, but Maggie Smith turns in a fine, reserved performance as the more hard-edged sister. Daniel Bruhl is a little awkward in his role; while Natascha McElrone turn in a more memorable performance, though hardly as commanding as Dench and Smith. The cinematography lends affection to the English countryside and coast, and it highlights the isolation of the small town.

This film is slow-moving and carefully articulated, without much happening beyond what is revealed in the actresses’ faces. Without Dench and Smith, it would have no appeal, and so should be seen more for the two stars than for the film itself. 3+ stars.

English actor Charles Dance (’Last Action Hero’) made his debut as director in ‘Ladies in Lavender’ based on a short story by William J. Lock. The film features reliable veterans like Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Miriam Margolyes, David Warner, plus Natascha McElhone (’Ronin’), and Daniel Bruhl (’Goodbye Lenin”).

The story, set in 1936 in a seaside village in Cornwall, is a simple one. A young handsome man named Andrea (Bruhl) is found on the shore, uncounscious, with his ankle broken. Andrea, who cannot speak English, is nursed by two old ladies of the village, Ursula (Dench) and Janet (Smith), and soon he recovers his health, picking up some English words while in bed. Also, Andrea starts to live with the spinsters (and the housemaid Margolyes who teaches him how to peel the ‘potatoes’), and brightens the life of the ladies, especially that of Ursula, to whom Janet refers as very ‘naive.’

Later, Andrea turns out a gifted violinist, and Olga, young traveller from the city, also finds his talent (Olga speaks fluent German). And a bit incredibly, I think, but Olga happens to be a sister of one famous violist, who happens to be in London just for one day. And Olga says this is a great chance that he cannot lose.

The weak and implausible story is helped by the presence of the two great actors Dench and Smith. It is their acting, or subtle expressions of voice and face that really tell the story, and Charles Dance should be very thankful for their excellent jobs (I thought, actually, his direction is just so-so, with too many unnecessary slow motions and even an embarrasing ‘dream sequence’ of Ursula that had almost killed the film).

The film’s strength lies in the veterans’ acting, particularly that of Dench, whose character Ursula is the most memorable one. It is clear that she is in love, and equally clear that she knows she is not allowed to express her feelings even before Janet, who somehow senses the truths behind the embarrassed expressions of Ursula. At the same time, however, this could be the weakest (or most incredible) part of the film — of course, old ladies fall in love, and why not? — but Judi Dench and Daniel Bruhl? And in the original, Ursula is in her 40s while Judi Dench was born in 1934.

Another problem is (so I found), Daniel Bruhl, or his character Andrea, who lacks the mystery, or the dark side, which he should have, if he really comes from where he claims (remember, it’s 1936, only three years before WW2). Andrea’s character needs more complexity. After all, who is he? Why wants to go to America? He doesn’t talk about them — that’s fine — but no one asks (except David Warner’s doctor), which is too strange.

‘Ladies in Lavender’ is a good film about the two ladies in title, and the acting from the principal players is excellent. Watch for Judi Dench and Maggie Smith, and you will be greatly moved by them, or their characters.

This is not a new edition of the movie, the only difference is the case is a standard DVD case instead of the cardboard snap kind.

Before I had a DVD player, I heard about the release of this excellent film on DVD. I had to have it when I discovered it included a commentary featuring all of the Goonies with the director. I begged and pleaded with my parents to get a DVD player so I could see it, and finally, my wish was granted.

How could I be disappointed? The movie is fabulous. It is an adventure story and a teen movie mixed into one; it covers the coming of age theme and finding buried treasure at the same time. I know what you’re thinking: “Rubies, and emeralds… and diamonds?” Yes! A group of kids who call themselve “The Goonies” are facing their last days in Astoria, Oregon. Their homes are being taken from them by a rich family who wants to extend their country club over the properties. Mikey (Sean Astin) and Brandon Walsh (Josh Brolin) are brooding in their home when Mouth (Corey Feldman), Chunk (Jeff Cohen), and Data (Ke Huy Quan) drop by. In their boredom, they decide to explore Mikey’s dad’s attic where he keeps all of the rejected museum items. There, they find a map showing where the kids can find pirate One Eyed Willie’s buried treasure on the coast. Fueled by boredom and a need for money, the kids set out to find it. Brand tries to stop the boys, but consents to go along on the adventure when they meet up with Andie (Kerri Green) and Steph (Martha Plimpton). However, they run into trouble when they find that the place where the treasure is buried is also the hideout of the Fratellis, a group of murderous criminals. Filled with great scenes and great lines, (”I smell ice cream,” “That’s my mom’s most favorite piece,” “I’m setting booty traps!”) you’ll find yourself quoting this film and talking about it with everyone. It appeals to young and old alike.

The extra features are great. Besides the commentary which adds a lot of insight into the hijinx behind the scenes, there are both parts of the Cindi Lauper “Goonies R Good Enough” music video, a short featurette with behind the scenes information, and three deleted scenes including the famed octopus scene. Even the main menu is beautifully done.

I paid significantly more for this DVD than it is being listed for here, and it was worth what I paid for it and more. Why not take advantage of a great movie with great extras for a great price? You’d be dumb if you didn’t!

“Chicken Run” (the latest from Aardman Studios, the makers of the ‘Wallace and Gromit’ films) is simply the most delightful, visually amazing, and FUN animated movie since Disney’s “The Lion King.” Other studios (notably Warner Brothers) have tried to take a bite out of Disney’s pie-share of the kid-movie market, but Aardman and Dreamworks have done it best in this charming, hilarious, and edge-of-your-seat thrilling animated fantasy about a group of hens trying to break out of a chicken farm. Running the farm with an evil eye and an iron ax are the villainous Mrs. Tweedie and her henpecked (literally) husband, who’s sure those chickens are plotting escape. The voices are perfect, from Julia Sawalha and Joan Horrocks from “Absolutely Fabulous” as chickens to Mel Gibson as the “flying” rooster Rocky. I want to recommend that every parent take their kids to see this one: unlike many other recent cartoons, this one is completely suitable for all but the very youngest children (there’s some tense moments in a chase at the end, and a little threatening to the chickens with an ax), but even better, this will delight and amuse the adults with its clever animation, perfect voice-casting, witty visual allusions to famous movies like “The Great Escape,” “The Bridge over the River Kwai,” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” and Indiana Jones-type thrills that range from a chase inside an automatic chicken pie-making machine to a dramatic and climatic escape that is reminiscent of, but even improves on, the high-energy chase sequences of Aardman’s “Wallace and Gromit” films. The moral lessons (you can succeed better with teamwork; stand by your friends) are pointed but gentle, without hitting kids over the head. I can’t recommend this one highly enough, folks, whatever age you are. And if you head out of the theater and go eat a chicken pot pie, you have a much, much, harder heart than mine!

Well, what an absolute joy and surprise this movie turned out to be. I was dumb-founded from start to finish as to how the animators actually created this magical stop-motion picture. In the past three days I have watched this disc over and over again, not tiring of it at all. The story (ala “Stalag 17″ and “The Great Escape”) is simple yet effective. A group of English hens constantly plot and scheme to escape from their chicken farm, run by the tyrannical Mrs Tweedy (the voice of Miranda Richardson), before they are turned into chicken pies. Their only hope comes in the shape of a cocky, plucky American rooster named Rocky Roads (Mel Gibson in his best performance to date). “Chicken Run” is filled with great adult one-liners and jokes and is packed with every war/escape movie cliche know to this genre. It will also appeal to the little ones. The disc is great value. The DTS soundtrack is pretty awesome and really kicks into power when the chicken pie oven blasts into action….WOW! The video transfer is crystal clear, which adds an extra dimension to the clay models. The extras are fun also. The “Chicken Panic” button is very cute, “The Making Of” docos (there are two) are VERY interesting and informative, and there is great information about the movie hidden throughout the menus….you have to find them! The highlight of the disc is the voice of Jane Horrocks (”Little Voice” and Bubble from “Ab Fab”) who steals the show as Babs the dumb hen! She’s hysterical. Make sure you buy this disc for your DVD library. You won’t be disappointed! If this movie doesn’t win an Oscar at next year’s Academy Awards….I’ll give up poultry for life!

A very nice repackaging of the Flint movies, well worth purchasing by diehard fans. All the principles of the films are now unfortunately dead (including the late great James Coburn, who would’ve added immeasurably to any commentary tracks), but the commentary tracks included are definitely the highlight of this new edition. Two uber movie geeks (sorry, can’t remember their names) bring tons of charm, enthusiasm & wit to the commentaries which are chockablock with endless fun spy-movie/TV trivia. (They, along with the rest of us Flint fans, whine long & hard about the fact that Coburn chose not to continue the series after a mere 2 films—hell, he could’ve at least made it a trilogy.) Additional features on a 3rd disc are pretty lame (including the SUPREMELY lame 1977 made-for-TV movie—a Flint flick in name only with virtually no connection to the Coburn films). Again, the commentaries are what make this collection worthwhile. Highly recommended!!

What’s with these reviews that are simply parroting the DVD contents and Amazon’s own description? Nothing like trying to stuff your review numbers with garbage in an attempt to make the top 1000, 500 or whatever. Make it a real review or shut up!

That said, if you have not seen the Flint movies, do so! Envisioned as a competitor to the James Bond franchise, the Flint movies follow the adventures of secret-agent, super-playboy, part mad-scientist Derek Flint. Played by James Coburn (one of the last people to be personally trained by Bruce Lee), the movies are part tongue-in-cheek with plenty of action. Yes, the special effects are dated, but the plots are still pretty darn good. May people consider the movies to be a simple spoof on James Bond, kinda like the Dean Martin Matt Helm movies. The Austin Power’s telephone ring – taken right off the Flint movies. It’s the telephone ring on the Presidential Hotline to Lloyd Cramden’s. The soundtracks from both movies were recently released – by popular demand. Not bad for 30 year old movies!

In Like Flint: The last film that 20th Century Fox filmed in CinemeScope, this sets Flint against some of the world’s wealthiest women, bent on world domination. How? By brainwashing them with hair-dryers at the Fabulous Face salon, located on a private island…..

Our Man Flint: This sets Flint against some of the world’s brightest scientists, bent on world domination. How? By controlling the weather. The machine is located on a, well, a private island…..

OK, so the plots are similar, but come on. Flint making “bloooba, bloooba” sounds – communicating with dolphins. Moving around in space via his sonic belt buckle. Nailing a fly with his cigarette blow-gun. The gymnastic fight scene. The weightless battle in space. All priceless moments. Watch these two movies and you’ll be thinking “so that’s where (insert movie name here) got the idea!”

Any Rugrats lover is sure to love these movies! I rented them before because I think the show is just too cute and knew the kids would enjoy it. To my surprise, even my husband has become a fan of the Rugrats after viewing the first movie where little Dill arrives. We also enjoyed their trip to Paris! and we reciently bought Rugrats Go Wild! and are now adding the first movie and the trip to Paris to our DVD home library.
We feel that any parent who enjoys cartoons as much as their kids, will certinly enjoy watching these movies anytime with their childern.

Rugrats are so cute and sweet. Many hours of family fun. I watch it myself when I just want something to relax by and don’t feel like changing the DVD.

The first thing that surprised me about this flick is that it is in black and white. Obviously, I could have read that from the product description, but I just sort of passed over it and seeing that vivid color cover I was expecting something different. Not that this is anyway a bad thing. There is something unexpected about a sexual and violent black and white film that makes them all the more stunning, just because I am not used to seeing such extremes in the classic format.

“Female Demon Ohyaku” (”Yôen dokufuden hannya no ohyaku”) is just a fantastic flick. The first Pinky Violence film, and the one that would inspire many other rape/revenge flicks like Lady Snowblood and Kill Bill it has all the classic elements. Ohyaku Dayu (Miyazono Junko) is a beautiful acrobat/prostitute who is sold to the highest bidder following each show. Capturing the eye of a handsome thief, he rescues her from a bureaucratic rapist and claims her for his own. She is just the bad girl a guy like him needs as partner and wife. Ah, but a happy life was not meant for Ohyaku, and she soon finds her self without a lover, disgraced and exiled on a prison island. There is only one thing for a desperate gal in that situation….revenge.

Now, being an older flick “Female Demon Ohyaku” is not as extreme as some of the later Pinky Violence offerings. There is no real nudity to speak of, and the gore is limited. But they make do with what they have, as Ohyaku seduces and kills her way through a number of hapless men, and even one woman (very sexy scene!), working her way towards her target. Lead actress Miyazono Junko is quite the beauty, although believable tough and deadly as well. She doesn’t let anyone take the easy way out in her revenge, but gets creative with her cruelty. Wakayama Tomisaburo, of Lone Wolf and Cub fame, plays a supporting role but never really gets into the action.

The DVD has some great features as well, including an essay on the Sword and Girl genre, and a nice commentary. The cover is reversible so you can have the original Japanese artwork instead of the shown cover, which is really cool. This is followed by two other loosely-connected color films in the series Legends of the Poisonous Seductress #2: Quick Draw Okatsu. and Legends of the Poisonous Seductress #3: Okatsu the Fugitive. They don’t continue the story, but feature the same lead actress and themes. I am anxious to pick them up, and see if they are as magnificent as this gem.

Usually, I watch movies a month or two after I receive them, because I don’t have the time. I enjoyed watching this first series of Oyaku. The part I didn’t enjoy was having the disk stopping on me after a few minutes in the movie and I had to keep trying to get past the section it would stop on.

This is the best portrait of an artist I’ve ever seen. I was completely entralled by the film. Because Warhol was both tremendously inventive and horribly cruel, I alternately felt a sense of awe and disgust. Warhol’s genius and callousness are both fleshed out. Despite the turbulent content of the film, I was simply exhilerated throughout.

Having watched this excellent film, I feel a greatly enriched appreciation for Warhol’s art—a sense of what it said, how it worked, and how it became a cliche. (I was particularly ill-informed about Warhol’s films, which were discussed in great detail.)

The Factory–where Warhol worked (but seldom played) and where transvestites, drifters, and creative spirits intermingled–is featured in healthy portions. This locale comes across as one of those rare places in history where the geist of a era is spatially concentrated. Here, in this one extraordinary place of production, Warhol and others fomented art and a vision of a post-Fordist world. This film is essential viewing (like the Weather Underground or Berkeley in the Sixties) for those who want to ingest and comprehend the paradigm shift of the “1960s.”

Warhol’s cruel indifference to the self-destruction of those around him is critically revealed. While some in the Factory drank and drugged themselves to death, Warhol passively watches, always remaining cool, detached, and voyeuristic.

The attempted homicide on Warhol, his commercialism, and his later years are all mentioned. I would fault the film for not showing Warhol speak on film more often, for not really considering his cooptation by capitalism, and for skipping over his influence in art and in popular society.

I must admit though, that the film is brilliantly executed, and well worth your time and nickel.

I just received this in the mail and finally got to watch it. It is a very engaging and in-depth presentation of his life from early childhood to the late 60s. In fact it’s the most in-depth documentary in the respects of his early life, pre-pop success, that I’ve seen. There are lots of great images and archival footage that otherwise you may not have a chance to see, but…

This documentary seems to focus mostly on the silver factory years, which lasted only from the early 60s to 1968, yet takes up most of the 4 hours of this film. Granted, those were arguably some of the most influential and important years of his career, but I wish this film contained more on his later life. The last 2 decades of his career, the 70s and 80s, took up only the last 20 minutes (credits included) of the whole 4 hours, which is only a brief summary. This is the only reason I decked one star off my rating, as the 70s and 80s are my personal favorite times in his career. There’s always The Andy Warhol Diaries for that area though, which I would also recommend.

So, overall, I would recommend this to anyone interested in Andy, and to those who are already fans. Even though it’s lacking in it’s coverage of his later career, it excels in every other aspect, and I’m glad I got to see it.

This isn’t quite the story you remember. It’s been updated to add Monique (lovely Cécile De France) added as romantic interest and occasional damsel in distress, to include Jackie Chan as Fogg’s valet, and to give plenty of opportunity for Chan’s incredible clowning.

The plot winds its way around the world, one step ahead of the bad guys. It’s a basically light movie, and the light tone is reinforced by the amusing animated interludes that skip over the tedium of travel. Fogg is shown as an over-intellectual bumbler, saved (whether he knows it or not) by Passepartout (Chan). Mostly, though, the movie is a vehicle for Chan’s brilliant physical humor. If you’ve never seen him – well, you have no idea just how funny martial arts can be made.

It’s a safe kind of movie, with bloodless fights, chaste romance, and people keeping their clothes on. There’s no great purpose here, just good fun. Hey, it works for me.

Lau Xing (played by Jackie Chan) is on the run from the London police, and he finds a hiding place in the home of Phileas Fogg (Steve Coogan), an eccentric inventor whom he quickly convinces that he’s French! When Fogg accepts a challenge to prove that he can indeed go around the world in 80 days, he packs up Lau Xing and sets out. But, there’s schemes afoot, and schemes within schemes. Can Fogg and Lau Xing make it back to England within the 80 days? Overcoming many villains and obstacles, there’s nothing that can stop them!

OK, I must admit that I can easily see why this is such a controversial movie. The makers of this movie took the original Jules Verne story, and turned it every which way but loose! With wacky inventions, karate fight scenes, humorous chases, and goofy humor, this is not a movie to be taken seriously. Indeed, if you start out watching this movie by suspending your disbelief far away, you will come to enjoy its crazy, off-beat humor.

My children, who are not fans of serious drama, loved this movie, as did I. It’s a good, family-friendly movie that you can watch when you want to unwind and shift your brain into neutral. My family and I highly recommend this movie to you and your family!
