I have a copy of the DVD they are selling above. It is definitely NOT Drunken Master II. This is the original Drunken Master, made in 1978 I think, and its really a good movie. The only problem is, the DVD is the absolute worst transfer of anything I have ever seen in my life. The picture is so ugly and blurry, and the sound is crap. It’s watchable, but I wouldn’t recommend it. I gave it 5 stars for the movie, 0 stars for the dvd, which averages out to 3.

Most of the reviews on this page seem to refer to the classic “Drunken Master”. “Drunken Fist Boxing” is not that movie and is nowhere near as good. The only scenes JC has are actually stolen from the first “Drunken Master”.

There have been a lot of movies recently about God (Bruce Almighty) and faith (Dancing at Lughnasa), but many of them have avoided mentioning one word: Christ. Luther breaks that trend by addressing the foundation figure of the Protestant Reformation, Martin Luther. This film unabashedly presents the man as both a fallible human being, with crushing fits of self-doubt, and a man in constant pursuit of the mind of God, a man who changed the face of Europe.

Luther was and is an ambiguous figure to many, and this movie doesn’t try to simplify anything. We see Luther (Joseph Fiennes) in the most productive and tumultuous years of his life, with the movie ending abruptly after the Augsburg Confession. The character of Luther’s sponsor, Philip the Wise (Sir Peter Ustinov), is cut down, making him a friendly figure where he was in fact a shrewd politician who tried to use Luther’s opinions as a way to enrich state coffers. The figure of Karlstadt (Jochen Horst) is real and receives comment, but the film doesn’t really permit Luther to endorse or condemn his rebellion. Luther’s wife and sometime foil, the sharp and witty Katerina von Borg (Claire Cox), doesn’t even appear until near the end of the film. And Johann Tetzel (Alfred Molina), whose abuses spurred Luther’s greatest accomplishments, is treated like a straw man.

This movie seems structured at times like a Cliffs Notes of Luther’s life and work. Perhaps it’s intended to encourage the viewing public to read the books themselves and find out who Luther was. It’s certainly not a technical tour-de-force. The opening is cut together with the same abruptness as a trailer, Luther’s conversions (he had three, each more profound than the last, like stairsteps) are compressed, the camera is usually unmoving, like a portable stage.

But the movie is strong, accurately reflecting who Luther was and what he did. Running just under two hours and allowing plenty of room for the circumstances of Luther’s day, it’s easy to watch. The environment, including land and cityscapes, are well rendered, the light and sound are clear, and the colors pop.

Plainly, this isn’t a general-interest film. People who watch it are at least curious about Luther’s work, if not already familiar with it. But for a theological art-house movie, it’s a cut above most of what’s been made in recent years, and eminently watchable. Highly recommended.

I have seen many Luther films over the years. They make him into a superhero. In many senses Luther was a superhero but he didn’t set out to be one. What I like about this movie is it brings in other aspects such as the Peasant Revolution and the ensuing slaughter. This is avoided in other movies about Luther. Such topics are risky fare for those hoping to make Martin Luther perfect. After all, Luther’s greatest supporters were directly connected to the carnage. The movie makes Luther human for once and this movie isn’t one of those boring theological dissertations. Sir Peter Ustinov turns out a magnificent performance as Duke Frederick in this, his final film before his death. I saw this 3 times in the movies and would have seen it more had the movie remained in local theaters longer.

This John Ford classic has all the requirements for a great film. While a bit sappy at times with the old army Irish types, Victor Mclaughlin got a second life with these films, there is still enough here to engage the intellect. Shirely Temple is interesting to see grown up. Her acting style certainly did not evolve much over the years.

What makes this film great are Fonda and Wayne, both playing roles opposite to their norm. Fonda is wonderfully arrogant and yet vulnerable at the same time. Wayne is humble and second fiddle for a change, he comes off well being the wiser, disgruntled subordinate. What really makes this film is the scenry an production quality. John Ford was painstakingly accurate with unifroms, equippment and gear. He provides a believeable image of army life, with all its pettiness and sense of honor. Everything is accurate down to the various bugle calls and the troop commands issued to the men. While there are obvious comparisons to Custer, what makes this film interesting is the sheer study of military incompetence. Fonda’s character is desperate to make a name for himself, and he sacrefices his command in order to do so. The battle scenes are exciting to watch, even the old fashion carriage chase with the Indians running about is well done. In the end what is the message of this film? There probably isn’t any exactly. Fonda’s character creates a military disaster, pure and simple, yet we see that Wayne is willing to carry on this legacy of heroism to inspire the regiment in its continued campaigns against the hostiles. Here we see how myths are made from the most unlikely sources. A fine film all around, and probably the best of Ford’s cavalry epics.

The first, and in my opinion, the best of John Ford’s so-called Cavarly Trilogy. “Fort Apache” is Ford’s thinly veiled re-telling of the Custer-Little Bighorn legend. A subject that fascinated Ford, but he didn’t want to be hemmed in by the history so he completely changed the names and locations so he could tell the story the way he wanted to tell it.

Henry Fonda plays a Custer-like Colonel who has seen his career’s meteoric rise during the Civil War end with peacetime and an assignment to a frontier outpost. He resents this, and looks for an opportunity to earn fame and glory. He finds this opportunity at the expense of the Apaches who have left their reservation for good reasons. If he can defeat the Apaches then his career will certainly be boosted. Fonda’s Colonel Thursday is a brave and competent officer, who does recognize some of the injustice and indignity that the reservation system has imposed upon the Apaches, but his lust for glory blinds him to everything in the end.

John Wayne plays the competent, experienced second in command who clashes repeatedly with his superior. The film also features a love interest between a grown-up Shirley Temple and her then real-life husband John Agar. Being a Ford movie there is plenty of comic relief from various Irish NCO’s, and romanticized vignettes of frontier cavalry life.

Just about anybody reading this review has probably seen “This is Spinal Tap” as many times as the band has changed drummers. What you really want to know is whether the DVD extras are worth the price. YES. Theatrical trailers about cheese rolling festivals, David St. Hubbins with strait hair in an early short that eventually evolved into the film, Rob Reiner begging people to show the movie in their theaters, deleted scenes that develop and explain the cold sores the band keeps ending up with, and the bloody demise of Janine (well, we can dream can’t we?) all this and more can be yours for the low low price of…whatever. Anyway, if you’re a Tap fan and you’ve got a DVD player, get this disc. If you’re a Tap fan and you’ve got this disc, get a DVD player. If you’re a Tap fan without the disc or a DVD player, talk your rich buddy with all the cool home theater equipment into buying this disc, then watch it at his place and eat all the potato chips in the house. If you’re not a Tap fan, you can get a copy of “The Sound of Music” around here somewhere, I’m pretty sure. I’ve always thought of Derrick Smalls as kind of a short hairy version of Julie Andrews anyway.

Superb (m/r)ockumentary of the semi-fictitious band “Spinal Tap”, made up of Michael McKean (”Lenny”, soul mate of Squigy, on the TV series “Laverne & Shirley”), Christopher Guest (actor/director of “Waiting for Guffman”), Harry Shearer (performs voices of 22 different characters on “The Simpsons”), and a random selection of ever-changing drummers. The movie is a tongue-in-cheek parody of washed-up hard rock bands that still think they are God’s gift to the universe. The inspired idiocy borders on genius at times, lending weight to Michael’s observation that there is a “fine line between stupid and clever”.

The DVD is simply amazing. For starters, everything is in character. From the style of the main menu title screen, to the menu voice-overs by the band, and extending through all of the extra material included on the DVD, the personas of the band (and the fictitious director as well) are maintained with perfect consistency.

What makes this all the more amazing is the shear quantity of extras on the disk. For starters, there is about an hour of “deleted” scenes provided. In addition, there are numerous music videos, TV commercials (fake I presume???), and trailers. And as if that weren’t enough, there is also a commentary track throughout the entire film with the band members, completely in character, being as hilariously idiotic as they are in the film. The Spinal Tap commentary track is easily the most entertaining commentary in my extensive DVD library.

The DVD medium is put to splendid use as well. Menu transitions are computer animations inspired by some of the film’s funniest moments. Each menu plays a different “Tap” song, giving you access to a decent percentage of the sound track. And, just as importantly, the animations are not overdone; the menus are still easy to use, and the transitions only take a few seconds.

Overall, this DVD is a great value, and provides a vast amount of material not available in the VHS version. If you are a Tap fan, or would like to be, you NEED this DVD!

The DVD treatment of this film is also the way a classic should be treated. Disney pulled out all the stops for the DVD’s in their new “Vault Disney Collection” which has 4 different releases as of 1/29/03. I have always loved this movie, and you can read all the great things about the film itslef from other reviewers and from the vhs reviews. I want to talk about the DVD treatment. First and most importantly it’s WIDESCREEN, maybe for the first time outside of a theatre. What a difference it makes, the film is beautiful in its scope as it was originally intended.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Old Yeller! Click Here

EXTRAS!! Read all about it!

There are about 3 hours worth of incredible extra material here. To find all of the extras is not easy, so make sure you poke around and push on every icon (especially arrows) you can and be sure to even pursue the items that do not sound interesting to you since they can in turn lead to yet another submenu of goodies.

The 2 disc set has much more than is listed here or even on the packaging itself. One of the best bonus features is a complete vintage episode of the Walt Disney television show from 1957, the episode called, “Best Doggone Dog in the West”. It has half the episode devoted to a behind the scenes promotion of the film, featuring Dorothy McGuire as our narrator. The other half had a great old featurette called “Arizona Sheepdog”, that ran in theatres in 1955 before a main feature. (TRIVIA not on this set – this episode was altered in 1961 for its rerun, and the Old Yeller segment was replaced with a 101 Dalmations segment.)

Buy,Download, Or Stream Old Yeller! Click Here

Several featurettes and archive Galleries with studio fan cards, costume design sketches, lobby cards, invitations, film production letterhead, posters, magazine ads, screenplay, and the complete exhibitors campaign book; Audio features with production photos and behind the scenes shots with the sounds of Radio Spots from the original release, two songs, a foley sound effects demonstration, and 2 interactive “Sound Studio” demonstrations. Also more production archives; included is the fan letters sent to Gibson the author; a news story from TV about the unveiling of the memorial to Old Yeller in Gibsons home town, which Disney studio participated in; a documeentary on the writer; a short new video called “Dogs” ; recent interviews with cast members;

My favorite, a nice featurette giving us a first ever rare glimpse of the famous “Golden Oak Movie Ranch” owned by Disney where this film and so many others were filmed. I had always wanted to see it and my wish finally came true. Another feature is the 1961 Disney Studio Album which is a photo album/video showcasing everything the Disney Studio created in 1957 from Parks, to TV, to film. A really neat extra is the actual complete recording of the original “Old Yeller” storybook LP album released as merchandising, narrated by Fess Parker. Next there is yet another documentary on the making of the film.

Also included here as a big bonus is the original theatrical Pluto cartoon “Bone Trouble” released along with the Old Yeller in 1957, so you can see it the way you did back when. Show the kids the way it used to be, when you went to the movies and you saw more fun stuff than just commercials before the main feature.

I challenge anyone to watch this without getting caught up in the story, or to keep from singing the great title song. All ages truly love this family film. The book that the story is based on by Gibson will long be remembered as a classic. Disney respected the book in their film, and made a movie that is many great things.

Thank you!, whoever at Disney pushed to treat this DVD like this. The extras have caused me to rave about the Vault Disney series to everyone I know and buy extra copies for my loved ones as Christmas presents. I hope all Disney fans buy tons of these so Disney understands it is worth putting the extra work into a DVD. If I could give it 10 stars I would, well worth the price!

I first saw this as a kid and nearly never saw another movie again. Especially one with an animal in it. For anyone who has ever bonded with an animal (especially a dog), “Old Yeller” strikes a nerve or two. The was also the first time I ever heard the phrase “It’s only a movie!” after I saw “Old Yeller” because I cried so hard. This is probably one of the finest family films ever made by the Walt Disney people. It’s a simple tale of a frontier boy who bonds with a stray dog (that more than proves it’s loyalty) and the boy’s final realization that he has to grow up. Dorothy McGuire is the steadfast mother and Tommy Kirk is the boy who must make a gut-wrenching decision that will start him on the road to maturity. I hated this movie for years but as an adult I more than see the beauty of it now and highly recommend it all round. But keep those kleenex handy because if you’re like me, you’ll need ‘em.

Julianna Margulies (of past ER fame) and Gabriel Byrne (Stigmata, The Usual Suspects) turn in respectable performances in the fairly average scary movie, Ghost Ship, directed by Steve Beck. It’s worth the price of a matinee if you can’t resist the seduction of shipwrecks, ghosts, and the sea.

Ghost Ship is about the Antonia Graza, an Italian luxury cruise ship that blipped off of radar in the 60s. An elegant ballroom scene aboard the doomed vessel opens the film. This scene has a perfect 60s look and feel to it, which initially made me wonder if I were in the wrong theatre. It was a far cry from what the previews led me to expect. But I was in the right place. Not very long into the movie, we see a gruesome piece of what happened to the crew and passengers. Beck does a respectable job holding viewer interest as the story progresses, inserting more pieces in the puzzle until everyone sees exactly what happened to the original passengers and what’s going on now.

As the intrigue begins, Gabriel Byrne (Murphy) is the captain of the Arctic Warrior, a salvage ship. His crew looks a bit young and not nearly alcoholic enough to be true sea dogs, but they have one thing in common with other salvage teams: the love of treasure. International maritime law states that it’s “finders, keepers” out there, so when Murphy’s crew is presented with a chance to make a big score, the tired but greedy crew decides to climb back aboard the Arctic Warrior and head off to the Bering Sea to find the Antonia Graza and return with her treasures.

Once aboard, the team splits up to explore the ship and sure enough, the fun and suspense begin in earnest. They discover her great treasure, but when they try to offload the booty from the Antonia Graza, it’s clear she has other plans. That’s when it gets ugly. There are a lot of dead things on this ship, and she desires that the living would soon join her other dead captives.

I loved the atmosphere of this flick, with its greenish hues and dark, creepy set. There’s night, rain, mystery, the sea, and a pretty tore up ship. Although the ship was never submerged, it looks as though it’s been through quite a battle, with its wiring pulled out and hanging from the ceiling in practically every shot. I know sea air is corrosive, but dang! There’s also a bit of gratuitous language, usually an early tip-off to a lack of purposeful dialogue. Fortunately, when things start happening, there’s less swearing and the dialogue moves the story forward.

The editor deserves a tip of the hat. Ghost Ship runs about 75 minutes, just the right amount of time to develop the story and lead to its conclusion without getting submerged in subplots that go nowhere. This movie sticks to the main theme of creepy ghost ship, how it got that way, and what the current captives must do to get out with their lives.

Ghost Ship has all the standard creepy special effects and a few stunts that rival those on Fear Factor. There are several very cool, original special effects as well, and the ending is a lot of fun. Like any scary movie, the plausibility gap is often wide, but the story moves along at a fair pace, keeping you interested to the end. I thoroughly recommend Ghost Ship if you’re in the mood for this sort of fare. Bon Voyage!

I decided to ignore most reviews of this film and check it out anyway. I am very glad I did. I don’t understand why people think its so bad. Ghost Ship is about a crew who aboard an abandoned ship that went missing in 1962, and was never heard of again. The crew finds it and strange things begin to happen. They start seeing Ghosts, hence the title. The ghosts are the passengers who were brutally killed on the ship, obviously.
The film has a few scary moments and it moves along quickly. There is a major plot twist at the end that I did not see coming at all and I thought it was brilliant. You can’t comment on the acting of a horror movie, it’s pointless, but luckily Ghost Ship has a cast of well known, and talented actors such as Gabriel Byrne, Julianne Marguiles, and Ron Eldard. If not for them, the film could have been a lot more cheesy, but I thought the film was intriguing, scary, and creepy. The opening scene by far one of the most gruesome scenes in film is worth seeing this film for.

This is the American version with Sigourney Weaver doing the narration. It was transfered to Blu-Ray with 1080 /60i resolution. Compared to 1080p disks this one is very soft and grainy. If you’re buying it for the great scenes and as an educational endeavor that’s fine, but if you’re expecting a reference quality disk with sharp /crystal clear 1080p images, I would suggest looking into the British version which I believe is full 1080p (narration is also British)

This DVD features so many places and pictures of things you just won’t be able to relate to they are so amazing and so hard to stop staring at. Get it, watch it, love it.

If you’re interested in the sociology and politics of life in Pueto Rico or the Nuyorican community, you may find this program interesting. If you’re looking for alot of concert footage or alot of musical information about Salsa, skip this DVD. There is minimal music and no MUSICAL discussion of Salsa in this 1-hour program.

I lived in the South Bronx and had the pleasure of seeing and dancing to the musicians on this DVD.
Mr. Luciano wants us to believe that the characters and music he has selected represent the Puerto Rican culture that I experienced in the clubs and streets of Manhattan and the Bronx and let us not forget Orchard Beach and City Island; he fails to do this.
The video is poorly made and the great Puerto Rican and Cuban musicians showcased seem to be on for 30 seconds or less.
Mr. Luciano takes us to Puerto Rico to reminds us of the heroes welcome given to the Puerto Ricans that attempted to assassinate President Truman. Thank you Felipe for that moment of Puerto Rican history.
There are other political comments made by Mr. Luciano throughout the video that tend to diminish the DVD even more. This is one video I would like to forget very fast.

I saw this movie on the Sci-Fi channel when it aired. Normally it isn’t my kind of genre to watch, but I am a fan of Joe Lando and the work of Matthew Hastings from the series they did together, Higher Ground. For a B-movie I thought it was credible. These are not your “usual” vampires. These vampires come in different species. Some like to eat you, not just suck your blood. This is where I found the movie to be gross. But for horror genre fanatics, this is right up your alley! I am purchasing this DVD because I found the movie to be entertaining for the most part. I agree that some of the acting was a bit over-the-top, but so what. I found Michael Ironside to be quite comical to tell you the truth. I thought Joe Lando and Dominic Z were very good with what they had to work with. It might not be a movie that would be nominated for any kind of award, but it is still entertaining.

Absolutely hilarious, gore filled vampire fest. For fans of Starship Troopers, Evil Dead, Slither, Undead, etc. Great gore effects, hilarious one liners, hot chicks… this movie has it all.
