Although the movie’s sensuality wouldn’t raise an eyebrow nowadays, it’s easy to peek how audiences from the 50’s would have been affected by Brigitte Bardot’s sensuous construct and how this movie revolutionized the foreign film market. A dependable delight to ogle, wild-child Brigitte teases with her bouncy hurry and her tight sweaters. And, yes, she can even act! In the role of Juliette, an incredibly attractive orphaned young woman living in a seaside village, Brigitte keeps the blooming balance between the constant flirt (who’s misunderstood as being the loosest girl in town) and the woman who yearns to have a “normal” married life despite her attraction to her brother-in-law. Contrary to celebrated opinion and despite Juliette’s regrettable infidelity, there’s really no sex in this movie, unless you deem a one-time tush shot to be overly sexual. The DVD booklet mentions how some audiences originally misperceived this film’s sexuality to be so valiant that rampant gossip soon generated complaints about scenes that weren’t even in the movie! The cinematography is breathtaking, with the Riviera beckoning you to fade there…or at least visit for an extended period of time. The only aspect of the movie that is dated and very worthy out-of-sync with unique times is the attitude that men are proper to women and that, with apt discipline and control, women can be kept in line and “forced” to fancy their husbands.

The Criterion edition is, as always, incredible. With director Vadim’s approval prior to his passing away, the movie was restored to its current uncut version in a fair widescreen format. The digital tranfer is impressive and one of the extras on the disc illustrates the clean-up process and provides before-and-after comparisons. The colors are now mettlesome and vibrant, and the print is crisp and definite. Qualified restoration and clean-up! The current US theatrical trailer is included and is hilarious as it makes the movie seem so cheap, sleazy and lurid.

Now here comes the downer: this movie deserves better English subtitles and infinitely better English dubbing. If you’re trying to learn French, you don’t want to do it with these subtitles. I found them to be quite improper during a few scenes and, with no rapid-fire dialog in this film to define it, not as ample as they should have been. These inaccuracies don’t detract from the legend as a whole, but given that this is a Criterion release, I feel more attention should have been paid to this aspect of the film. As far as the dubbing is concerned, don’t even bother. After a slight or so of listening to the dubbed version, it’s apparent why the dubbed feature isn’t listed on the DVD case. The actors’ readings are flat and boring. Criterion has proved repeatedly they can do remarkable better than that, so what happened here?

I calm give the movie itself 5 stars for it is an enchanting time capsule into 50’s psychology, and it’s a favorable narrative as well. And how can you not give 5 stars to Brigitte Bardot! I did subtract one star for the quite foul subtitles. Calm, for around $20, you can regain a fun romp with Brigitte in the Riviera of the 1950’s. Sounds valid to me. Worth owning.

After having seen so many movies during the last 25 years, I’m beginning to understand two or three things about cinema. For example, it’s impossible to profess a passion for cinema if the movies you explore are only masterpieces. Have me or not, but I’m not able to witness three Fellini or Bergman’s movies in a row without feeling a bit bored. I MUST frigid down and refresh my neurones by watching a poor sci-fi movie or a John Wayne movie of the 50’s ( he starred in a lot of very cheap films…) .

Director Roger Vadim’s AND GOD CREATED WOMAN is, in my plan, one of these movies you cannot neglect if you truly care for cinema. Not because Roger Vadim is an unknown genius but because of the actress who plays the main character : Brigitte Bardot. You simply have to contain one of her movies in your library and since only three or four movies starring BB have passed with success the test of time, AND GOD CREATED WOMAN could be your first choice.

But remember that Roger Vadim was not Billy Wilder and that the french Marilyn Monroe had to count solely on her sex-appeal to attract the audience. And it serene works. Brigitte Bardot shot a lot of dreadful movies, she was not, in my belief, a satisfactory actress but she ignited the veil. She was a genuine Star. And I’m not ashamed to have this DVD in my library.

The copy presented by Criterion is simply perfect, a trailer and a restoration demonstration as bonus features, the choice between the standard and the widescreen version, and english subtitles.

NO SPOILERS IN ANY Map! (which would be easy to do by accident here)

I can’t even start to utter the excitement I’m feeling, sitting here honest now salivating over an Official DVD release of one of my accepted Genre pictures of all time!!! Juan Piquer Simon’s PIECES!!!! If you understand as well as have any appreciation for the “Golden age of Gore” films (raw fear movies made between 1981 to 1986) or as what they refer to them now as “Grindhouse Films” this is a MUST Occupy. The only print of this wonderfully itsy-bitsy sleazy gorefest that has EVER been available was a BADLY TRANFERRED, washed-out and badly side-cropped fullscreen print (Depending on which brand was on the VHS you could bid which “side” the film was centered towards in order to avoid showing the “decapitation in the grass” aftermath.BUT, I peaceful procure sizable joy out of even for all it flaws) that’s been on DVD for all these years in public domain. This is time to rejoice!!!!

THE FILM: PIECES

Opening in a flashback with what (at the time, and serene is) was one of the most taboo, brutalistic & disturbing axe murders ever shot, the movie swiftly leaps to the “point to” and follows a “typical” Italian (even though it’s Spanish) Giallo style near, with Sexy female college co-eds getting slaughtered on campus by a dim gloved killer who likes to withhold “trophies” from each girl (Chainsaws are the killer’s fave instrument of destruction) . Christopher George and wife Linda Day-George co-star as the stereotype, hardboiled gumshoe and the sexy, sweet undercover cop who starts teaching tennis on campus in order to investigate while remaining under the radar of the killer. (Hopefully…..)

The movie is FILLED with Titanic kills, shapely college girls in various states of undress, hystericaly campy one moment and then sucker punches you the next, Dubbing that’s so abominable at times it actually ADDS to the fun experience, some lines that you can’t assist but laugh hysterically at (”BAAAAASTARD!!! BAAAAASTARD!!!”LOL) and quote for days, a few superior red-herrings to try and maintain you on your toes and a assure and twist ending that most will have probably figured out by the halfway point, but it stays fun and keeps your attention very easily. There’s also the fabulous, surprise at the ending that will have men cringing and women laughing for hours, but will have you thinking “Friday the 13th pt 1″.

Not a broad budget movie. But not a stinker in the cinematography dpt either. The camera is musty effectively and the musical earn is at times quite creepy & unnerving and REALLY creates some tense moements, reminding you at times of Fabio Frizzi or Goblin with it’s 80’s synth pulsing rhythmic themes. The panic stabs sound need to be well-known as well. Ranking up there with the “ratchet noise” from the fresh Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Pieces! Click Here

Don’t inquire of 2008 expansive budget/studio quality here folks. Narrate yourself at the filthiest, darkest, scariest movie theater in Manhattan at midnight, with sticky floors and all strangers around you. THAT was the environment you had to go to in order to notion this prick of sleaze cinema. It’s execrable. It’s dim. It’s an unusual taboo breaker. It’s gore was not only realistic, but carried impact as well. It actually contains a well understanding out “who’s doing it?!” tear as the cops try to halt the killer from collecting another one of his “Pieces”. A wintry twist and completely amazing double-shock ending, in the vein of the 1st two Friday the 13th film’s cap it all off.

A tremendous intention to use a saturday evening if double billed with “The Burning”. Ahhhhh……My thought of a perfect night.

Back in the 40s, a woman scolds her son for putting together a jigsaw puzzle depicting a naked woman. Understandably the boy then hacks his mother into…pieces. Forty years later the killer is on a college campus, and he’s definite to enact that jigsaw puzzle, but he’s upped the ante and using true chicks. Why go on a killing spree forty years later when the puzzle could have easily been solved before then? Hell if I know, this is a slasher film. Maybe he’s honest sick of getting screwed on those jigsaw puzzles with the missing pieces they always seems to be selling at Goodwill. Using a chainsaw and clothed like a killer from an Italian giallo thriller, he goes about the campus collecting whatever body piece is needed for the next share. If you ask me, a chainsaw really isn’t the most efficient tool for a slasher movie killer to consume since there seem to be more cons than pros attached to them if you really believe about it. It does collect the job done and eliminates all that dumb hacking with an ax or machete. A detective played by Christopher George(who everyone should buy played the reporter in Fulci’s City of the Living Boring) is on the case and has worry piecing together the mystery. He enlists the abet of a womanizing student and a tennis pro(a nice looking fraction herself) to sift through the handful of suspects. One of them is the goofy maintenance man played by Paul Smith(the broad dude who played the scandalous warden in Midnight Suppose), but it’s certain he isn’t the killer considering how hard they try to accomplish him seek like the killer. The Dean and the anatomy professor are a puny fishy too. So who is it?? The hell if I’m gonna verbalize you.

Pieces is a film that has all those ingredients all of us lovers of trashy slasher cinema cherish. It’s got the nude chicks, the faceless killer, the snazzy soundtrack(which sounds quite a bit like Goblin at times) and gore. This is slasher movie that has a bit more gore in it than most of the other films of the time. That’s probably because this wasn’t done by a major studio like the Friday the 13th films, and probably wasn’t under the microscope of the MPAA. It is a slasher film, but it has that killer with the shadowy gloves and floppy hat that makes it also feel like a giallo. It also seems to have inspiration from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre(the chainsaw of course) and Blood Feast(the collecting of body parts from young women) . I guess you could say that it’s pieced together from other apprehension films. Grindhouse Releasing have establish together another blooming 2 disc package for this film, so it’s worth the cash if you’re thinking about buying it.

To anyone who hasn’t seen it and is a fan of the 80s slasher genre, I’d highly recommend it.

Piece out.

This DVD should never have been released like this. The characterize is really terrible and the sound, it sounds like a represent. Some places seem like the tracking is out of order and others you can’t earn out the pictures. It looks like the movie was taped off tv in wide camouflage format than it looks as though someone took a camera and set it in front of the tv hide and did a pan and scan version of it. There are lines (like that of a vcr recording) all the blueprint through the movie. The sound drove me up the wall it was so dreadful. The reason I say it was recorded off tv is because the beginning and the demolish are carve and before the waste theme is over there’s a warner television distribution logo. Apart from some though-provoking early 20th century footage, this video is unprejudiced a slay of time. Commentaries are superficial and definite, useless for those who know a tiny more than Mao existence. Producers lost the fantastic oportunity in the interviews with outstanding sinologist Roderick McFarquhar, and dissident journalist Liu Binyan, who were asked mostly for well known anecdotaries that cannot clarify the role Mao played in novel China.

The sage jumps suddenly from the Greart Leapt Forward to the Cultural revolution, and from here to the Nixon-Mao meeting in 1972 and then Mao dies. Nothing about the principal facts which ocurred from the restoration Deng Xaioping by Mao in 1975 and the death of the Sizable Helmsman. No reference of the strong relationship between Mao and Zhou Enlai, the Gang of Four role in Cultural Revolution, or to the Lin Biao set and his death, nothing about the Corean War, the diplomatic strategy for the recovery of the UN seat for C!hina. The sino soviet split is explained in a superficial and annecdotical manner. The role of US advisory of the communist in WW II is also exagerated. Data about deaths in the Mao regime is taken from unexplained sources that diverge from respected scholars, even the most distinguished of Mao and China. In conclusion, if you contemplate the lifes of political leaders is a capable contrivance to understand a society, is better to go to the China Box Sets produced by History Channel entitled China Rising or the China: A Century of Revolution by WindStar Home VIdeo. But if you impartial want three or four gossips about how Mao liked young girls and other sensasionalists stories, you can obtain some entertainment in this video.

Just as Red China’s history and culture remains a mystery to most in the West, so does Mao Tse-Tung stand as puny more than a footnote to world history – a colossal gigantic footnote, of course, but one tiny studied and even less understood than most by Westerners. Some may only know him as the grandfatherly fellow who met with President Nixon in 1972. Mao was and is one of the most important leaders in original world history, a monster and a genius who made China a world power while bringing about the deaths of more people (his hold people) than Hitler and Stalin combined.

Mao was born a peasant, and in many ways he ruled as a peasant; he was a man of “charming vulgarities” who almost single-handedly saved the Communist movement in China. As a youth, he was portion of the first wave of Communists working to bring about revolution in a country overseen by injurious and generally ineffectual leaders. As Chiang Kai-Shek sought to rid the country of this growing Communist menace in the early 1930s, Mao became an outlaw who led the remnants of the revolutionaries on “the long march” – which only 20,000 out of 100,000 survived; he then established a unique foul in the north and began mobilizing an army. Vastly outnumbered by Chiang Kai-Shek’s noble forces, Mao was able to avoid total defeat thanks to the Japanese invasion of mainland China – Mao joined the fight against the foreign aggressor. The U.S. inadvertently helped arm the man who would, in 1949, claim control of the entire country and attach the People’s Republic of China.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Biography – Mao Tse Tung: China’s Peasant Emperor! Click Here

This video draws a colossal disagreement between Mao the revolutionary and Chairman Mao. His strengths did not lie in managing a country, as was soon made positive by his radical changes to Chinese society. Rebuffed by Stalin, Mao region about forging his fill Communist reshaping of the country, asking more of his people than was possible. His massive farm collectivization efforts and zest for overnight industrialization rapid led to a horrendous famine; some 40 million Chinese died of hunger between 1959 and 1961. Mao did not notice the reality of the trouble at first because people were panicked to notify him the truth. His invitation to the intellectuals to drawl their mind in 1956 resulted in an “anti-rightist” purge that tore apart over one million families, leaving hundreds of thousands of people without a job and tens of thousands consigned to labor camps. The proper site of affairs soon became apparent, however, and Mao was forced to the sidelines.

After five years of careful planning and a calculated mobilization of China’s young people, Mao reclaimed ultimate power and disposed of the moderates he viewed as having rolled aid many of his reforms. This fresh Proletarian Cultural Revolution marked a return to Mao’s paranoid dictatorship. The moderates and intellectuals had again been purged, and over one million Chinese had been killed or imprisoned. Mao did manage to do some suitable, despite himself, in his frail age. The visit by President Nixon and the opening of Chinese-US dialogue after three decades of silence marked Mao’s turn to diplomacy and his hope of gaining China an well-known seat on the world stage. He would die four years after Nixon’s historic visit. The Chinese mourned the loss of their gigantic savior, and Mao’s influence has never abated in the country, even as the unusual generation of leaders seeks to arrive to terms with Mao’s just legacy.

I consider this video does a superior job of summarizing Mao’s and China’s history in the short time allotted. It also does a graceful job revealing Mao the man to viewers. He was a colossal mobilizer of men who never lost his peasant ways. He was also a well-known womanizer. Was he, like Stalin, scandalous, though? This video would seem to explain that he was not. He seemingly did try to do what he conception best for China; the pickle was that he became, after 1958, a paranoid tyrant divorced from the reality of his land and his people. He certainly had itsy-bitsy quandary justifying the destruction of his enemies, but he did not bring misery to his people intentionally. Mao was a simple yet highly complex man, and this video makes for an instructive introduction to the subject at hand.

personally I like alot of action in my anime with a decent narrative, for me the yarn dosn’t have to be all that big.Witchblade on the other hand has a superior myth but in this volume I feel the action is lacking. The writers chose to concentrate more on having the characters doing other thigs rather that have them fight and I was dissapointed because of that. and because of that I don’t contemplate I will survey this series again or at least not for a long time when I’m bored and I’ve forgotten what this anime is all about. I unprejudiced care for lots of violence in my anime thats all.

This is one of the best volumes yet in my thought. Now, with the Witchblade series come the ruin things heat up as Douji Group Industries comes under fire and a unique clone blade emerges. Masane finds out how distinguished the Witchblade truly is and an wonderful position twist takes residence at the NSWF. This is obvious to score the audiences attention as Masane now fights for her life, esteem, and freedom to live with her daughter in peace.

I unbiased finished watching the newly released Special Edition of Holiday Inn. I was AMAZED at the clarity of the relate. I’ve never seen a print of this film looking so pristine. Even on unprejudiced a regular, 20″ non-HDTV plot, the hairs askew on top of Bing’s toupee during the celebrated White Christmas scene are plainly visible. Now if you can gaze single hairs on a person’s head during a medium shot on a exiguous television status, that’s a stunningly distinct characterize!

Buy,Download, Or Stream Holiday Inn! Click Here

The audio as well is crisp and obvious with rich bass and treble tones. If you notice the film with the audio commentary on, you’ll hear the dulcet tones of Ken Barnes relating some titillating tidbits about the making of the film, the songs (one particularly curious fraction concerns the verse to White Christmas), the cast, etc. All is enhanced by sound bites from Bing and Fred Astaire themselves in archive audio material from the 1970’s. As an example, Bing speaks of the continuing sales of his recording of White Christmas as tedious as 1974, how he felt it was due in section to people giving the narrate as a Christmas gift.

The accurate gems are the bonus features, particularly the 45 dinky long mini feature A Couple of Song & Dance Men. Ken Barnes is joined by Fred Astaire’s beautiful daughter Ava sharing biographical memories of both Bing and Fred, along with trivia tidbits. Ava shows and reads some of the letters Fred Astaire wrote to his wife while on a USO tour in England with Bing in 1944, and telegrams to Fred from Bing, Cole Porter, and Irving Berlin are also shown on hide. All is pieced together nicely with song excerpts from Bing’s films, coming attractions trailers, and newsreel footage, including Bing opening the Stage Door Canteen in 1944.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Holiday Inn! Click Here

The other, shorter bonus feature runs 7 minutes and is titled All Singing – All Dancing. Ken shares some rare late the scenes photos and techniques of how musical numbers were filmed, beginning with the early talkies. He shows how the orchestra and singer were together on the position and recorded as one.

The recent theatrical trailer for Holiday Inn is also included.

All is wrapped up nicely with a slip-cover that goes over the DVD case. When compared with the two-on-one DVD of Holiday Inn and Going My Contrivance that’s been out for many years now, the inequity in quality is plainly visible. The Holiday Inn print looks somewhat fuzzy or “muddy” in quality when watched after seeing the brilliance of the newly restored print ragged on this Special Edition.

In short, this is a DVD that’s well worth having. If you want the definitive presentation of this classic Holiday film, this is it! Bravo Ken & co.

I always felt this movie deserved a restoration to sustain its 1942 style B&W richness. Unfortunately this movie has NOT been restored to its novel rich and pristine Dusky & White splendor! It HAS been remastered meaning no cuts or deletions and also includes an approximate 42 exiguous mini biography of both Fred Astaire and Bing Crosby and a short portion about the making of the song and dance numbers of Holiday Inn.

A holiday perennial along with Miracle on 34th St. and It’s A Extraordinary Life, this original release is truly a Special Edition!

If you’re a fan of Doctor Who, you know to survey past the often-times dodgy special effects and to see at the narrative within. It’s the writing that often times saves Who from being a typical run-of-the-mill sci-fi TV prove with abominable special effects. So it’s a shame really when not only the effects are terrible, but also the chronicle.

And Time-Flight is objective a lifeless terrible account.

Of course, it had some great shoes to fill–following up on the rather emotionally draining anecdote EarthShock that featured the first death of a companion since the leisurely 60s. EarthShock, while not classic Who by any stretch of the imagination, was very memorable Who and that made it a tough act to follow. Time-Flight failed on virutally every memoir. Portion of it is that the sage looks cheaper than usual. The memoir was filmed on a shoe-string budget when EarthShock ran over budget and it shows. There are some truly funny sequences. This is one of those stories where having a excellent quality print and the quality of a VHS release do not back in any plot.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Doctor Who – Time-Flight! Click Here

But as I’ve said before–good storytelling has more often than not rescued sub-part effects in Who. Not the case here. The chronicle is comical at best. The station is stout of gaping holes. At one point a character is killed only to explain up a few scenes later with no apparent explanation offered or attepted. In addition, the villain of the part is painfully transparent and badly done.

Add to this that the regular cast seem bored or embarassed to be working and it all adds up to one of the bottom of the barrel Who stories. If you’re a completist then go for it. But if you want to contemplate the fifth Doctor at his best, try something like Mawydrn Undead or Caves of Androzani. Both note the fifth Doctor and Who at it’s best….

Following Adric’s death from the previous epic, the Doctor decides to cheer Nyssa and Tegan by taking them to the Expansive London Exhibition of 1851, but something draws the TARDIS off course, forcing them to…of all places, Heathrow Airport in contemporary England, where Tegan wanted to return (q.v. The Visitation.) After using his UNIT credentials to derive them out of pain with airport security, he is then drawn into the queer disappearance of a Concorde Jet over the British Channel. To that destroy, he enlists the exhaust of another Concorde to retrace the path of its twin. “The put a question to is where but when” the plane has vanished, as he equates it with the TARDIS concern they had earlier. The pilot, Captain Stapley, turns out to be a qualified and solid fellow throughout the adventure.

They accept the reply in the Jurassic Period, which is where the time contour that hijacked them ends. The crew and passengers of the other flight are under some hypnotic influence, all that is except for a Professor Hayter, a university scientist specializing in hypnotism who was unaffected. He thinks that the plane was hijacked by the Soviets and that they are unhurried the iron curtain.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Doctor Who – Time-Flight! Click Here

The peer of a crashed spaceship, a citadel, and a grotesque-looking Oriental magician named Kalid, leads the travellers to gain there’s more to their plight.

Nyssa plays a larger role by acting as a medium for some aliens divided into friendly and unfriendly halves, and there’s a kind of sixth sense about her, which may arrive from her being from Traken. And at least Tegan finally gets to be a stewardess, having conventional her uniform all throughout the season.

I can’t insist more without spoiling the rest. Paleontology seems to be a frail case in Doctor Who (q.v. The Silurians, The Sea Devils) . 140 million years ago is indeed the halt of the Jurassic Period, but then the Doctor says they must be arrive the Pleistocene Era. Two goofs: he must have meant the Cretaceous Era, and second, it should be the Pleistocene Epoch, which wouldn’t occur for another 138 million years after.

Some credit should be given to British Airways giving producer John Nathan-Turner permission to feature the Concorde and airport authorities giving him the go-ahead to film at Heathrow.

Occasionally, the series has some stories that don’t gash the mustard, and sadly, Timeflight is one of them. The regulars advance out superb as usual, with fine performances from Richard Easton (Stapley) and Nigel Stock (Hayter) . The main plight, though, is the understanding of two Concordes being hijacked to the raze of the Jurassic Period and the poor anecdote notion and execution.

I have seen many, many classic movies. I have seen the best performances of the best movie stars and I have seen all of the most respected classic films. None approach conclude to Camille, the best movie ever made! I’m not kidding, either. This film is pure magic. The screenplay is quick-witted and flawless. The romantic lines will last in your memory unbiased as long as the pretty images. And there are many unforgettable scenes.. Garbo drops her fan as she walks down the staircase (in a attractive Adrian gown), as she sees the man she loves. The scene where Robert Taylor throws his money at the woman he can’t have. And the single best scene in motion report history..Garbo’s legendary and tearjerking death scene. The first time I saw this movie, the raze made me wail uncontrollably for half an hour. Objective as attractive are the heartfelt performances by Garbo and Robert Taylor, who is sensitive and tender, as his character should be. Garbo is breathtaking in her best role. Her lines are perfectly blended with her character, such as when she is on her deathbed and whispers, “If you can’t effect me, how can a doctor? ” or “My heart isn’t traditional to being elated.” As they are falling in cherish, the lines are absolutely incredible, such as when Taylor tells Garbo his parents were married 30 years and Garbo says, sadly, “Nobody could ever cherish me 30 years.” People could laugh at this movie and say it is sentimental, but that objective indicates lack of heart. I have never seen a movie without a sentimental script that ever inspired me to write. This movie inspired me in every map.. It inspires us to be more compassionate towards each other and live to treasure. This is the most effective like sage ever told, and this 63 year-old film mild breathes life into a 150 year-old yarn. Why? Because it is timeless. A memoir is only dilapidated if the artists contemplate so, but this film is a masterpiece. It will always be my celebrated movie.

Every actor or actress who has achieved success in Hollywood tends to have one film that is their “signature” allotment and in Greta Garbo’s instance that role would have to be her tragic heroine Marguerite Gautier in the MGM classic “Camille’.

This film was, and is one of the benchmarks for how a classic movie should be build together. Flawless attention to detail, a substantial romantic anecdote, attractive performances by all concerned, a sumptous production and a glowing literary source. All these elements successively combine here to compose a shroud masterpiece that has moved, charmed and entertained movie goers for generations. Indeed “Camille” is probably the best known and most often revived of all of Greta Garbo’s tall body of work which includes such masterpieces as, “Tall Hotel”, “Mata Hari”, “Queen Christina”, and “Ninotchka”.

Greta Garbo, the mysterious, and reclusive MGM star here proves yet again what a blooming actress she can be when given material superb of her talents. Based on the tragic memoir by Alexandre Dumas of “The Lady of the Camellias”, “Camille” tells the fable of Marguerite Gautier a illustrious 19th Century courtesan in Paris who lives by her beauty and the befriend of those men who can pay for it. The tragedy of her location is that when life means very itsy-bitsy to her and she finds herself slowly dying of consumption, she meets the admire of her life the young and penniless gentlemen Armand who loves her for herself and not because of the charms she can offer. Armand offers her a life of sterling savor and purpose which is missing in her gilded Parisian life among her superficial, pleasure loving friends and as the mistress of the grim and domineering Baron de Varville who views her as his personal plaything. Garbo instills in Marguerite unprejudiced the proper qualities of tragedy and humour to create her a well rounded believable character. Her scenes with the Baron have objective the legal elements of dismay and loathing of the area she finds herself in. Garbo, who earned yet another Oscar nomination for this role, reached original dramatic heights here and it was a performance which she was justifibly proud of.

“Camille” has a fantastic array of performers who surround Garbo with some graceful work. Robert Taylor was a rising MGM star only impartial beginning his incredibly long career with the studio when he was handed the plum role of Armand. Previously acted on hide by non other than Rudolph Valentino, Taylor has been accused of a positive stiffness in his playing. Reportedly he was skittish at the propect of working so closely with the legendary Garbo but it does not prove in his performance. Certainly his work in the second half of the film is a major improvement when he experiences the frustrations of loving a woman who is being kept by a wealthy older man. His is a pleasing performance given the limitations of the role . Henry Daniell, a broken-down character actor with many splendid performances to his credit does a satisfactory turn as the cross Baron de Varville. He is obliging in his scenes with Garbo and projects an image of a cruel, self centred individual who regards Marguerite as his personal possession and who believes that money can collect him everything he wants in life. The safe cast also contains some astounding work from Jessie Ralph another customary character actress. She takes the sympathetic role of Nanine, Marguerite’s devoted maid who stays with her devotedly through all the ups and downs of her life. Perhaps one of the most aesthetic performances is turned in by Laura Hope Crews as Marguerite’s superficial and self centred friend Prudence. Rarely has Crews, best known nowadays for playing Aunt Pittypat in “Gone With The Wind”, given a more fantastic performance, she is in turn selfish, funny, uncaring and infuriating and she dominates her scenes aided by her gaudy jewellery, over the top fashions and commanding presence . Lionel Barrymore also registers in the supporting role of Armand’s concerned father Monsieur Duval and his most memorable scene occurs when he confronts Garbo’s character with what she is potentially doing to Armand’s chances of ever succesively making his scheme in life. Garbo’s inconvenience at having to reject Armand for his have profitable despite the like she is feeling for him is heartrenching and gives Marguerite the mantle of a huge tragic character. The interplay between Garbo and Barrymore, who had worked together before very effectively in “Mata Hari”, is incandescent and goes a long procedure to explaining why these two performers are tranquil considered stars 70 years after this production.

Superbly directed by the legendary director George Cukor who worked so beautifully with Garbo on a number of occasions, “Camille” literally glows with the essence of a tragic romance in the making. Cukor was expert at extracting unprejudiced the upright amount of pathos and longing for other things from his players and here he excels in one of his finest films. The production also benefits from MGM’s substantial ability to bring the very best of talents to everything both in front of and slack the scenes. Adrian never surpassed himself than here in the gorgeous costumes he created for Garbo and the chief supporting players in this production. The film is so gorgeously costumed it makes viewing “Camille” a veritable gaze feast but they tie in very carefully with what courtesans of that time wore and shows MGM’s meticulous research into a time or period. Cedric Gibbon’s sets almost rival his gorgeous work for “Marie Antoniette” a year later and have that unmistakably no expense spared MGM leer about them.

“Camille” is the ultimate in romantic cloak entertainment of the first order. For people wanting to sample Garbo’s work for the first time this production is the best choice of all her films. I admire it as an example of traditional style movie making at its very best with all areas of the production given total care and attention. It is a timeless yarn and for all lovers of romance this film will never fail to fade you in its jam of searching for genuine admire at the expense of ones creature comforts. I never fail to be impressed by “Camille” and you wont regret this scamper into another time and state when care for and situation could mean everything in an individuals life.

Parents looking for a lustrous breeze on their accepted childhood stories need search no further than HBO’s multicultural exciting series “Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales for Every Child,” available in chunky on DVD or on ask from HBO Family. Designed for the 12-and-under-crowd, the award-winning series offers original reinterpretations of familiar classics, placing minority characters in the lead roles, and shifting the settings to believe a diversity of world cultures. Petite Red Riding Hood gets transported to frail China, The Emperor’s Recent Clothes is reimagined in feudal Japan, Rapunzel gets a Cajun makeover, and Snow White becomes a Native American princess named White Snow. Narrated by Robert Guillaume and boasting such A-list stammer talent such as Will Smith, Denzel Washington, Whoopi Goldberg, Rosie Perez, Chris Rock, and Samuel L. Jackson, among others, the present adds a current emphasis on tolerance, conception and cooperation to each story’s faded true lesson.

Deftly avoiding the twin pitfalls of racial caricature and bland political correctness, the note manages–at its best–to fuse the definite flavor of each culture into its storytelling, without sacrificing the timeless qualities that have kept these tales alive for generations. Of course, as with any series, some episodes succeed better than others, so here I will offer a more detailed critique of three in particular to back as a representative snapshot.

The first, entitled “The Princess and the Pauper,” takes Trace Twain’s sage of improper identity and gives it a feminist twist. Olivia is the pampered princess of Peachburg, a prosperous kingdom with a sad underbelly–the crime-infested slum known as the Peach Pits, home of the virtuous Zoe. Encouraged by her loving mother, Zoe dreams of a better life outside the ghetto, but her degenerate father keeps her down, telling her, “You’re impartial a broke nobody like the rest of us.” A chance encounter in the town square leads to a friendship between Zoe and Olivia, who realize that they are accurate doubles. Switching clothes on a lark, the girls waste up displaced from their respective homes, and during their adventures each learns principal lessons about equality and human dignity. Aside from the class issues explored in this episode, there is also a great range of ethnicities on point to, although accelerate relations are not addressed explicitly. Olivia and Zoe are both gloomy (and ostensibly “American,”) but Olivia has a Persian father and an African mother, and the townspeople pictured are white, dusky, Hispanic, Asian, and Arabic, all shown living harmoniously. The episode also delicately addresses the death of Olivia’s father, so parents of younger viewers should be prepared to discuss the subject further after the credits roll.

The second episode, called “The Steadfast Tin Soldier,” tells the myth of a young wheelchair-bound girl named Imani, who lives with her grandmother, and prefers the company of her believe imagination to that of other kids her age. One day, her grandmother gives her a box of toy soldiers made by her grandfather. One soldier in particular is missing a leg where her grandfather ran out of material–”That’s impartial the contrivance that one was made,” the grandmother says. Imani dubs the toy Goldie, and gives it a plot of honor among her other playthings. Once everyone is asleep, the toys advance to life and interact with one another, and Goldie finds herself ostracized by the group, except for a gorgeous African doll atop Imani’s bookcase. Certain to acquire his affections, Goldie begins her long climb upward, facing a series of obstacles along the scheme, including the scheming of a psychotic Jack-in-the-box, and the musical taunts of a mean-spirited trio of Barbie dolls, who insist her, “You don’t stand a chance.” Goldie perseveres, however, with the mantra, “Determination is all I need,” and eventually reaches her destination to become the hero of the toyroom. Imani wakes up to score Goldie locked in a dance with the African doll, decides to halt feeling sorry for herself, and is empowered to leave the house to obtain original friends.

The third episode is a resetting of the narrative of Robin Hood against a Mexican background. Entitled “Robinita Hood,” the episode incorporates a qualified deal of Spanish into the memoir of the brave heroine who “steals from los ricos and gives to los pobres.” Together with her band of Merry Chicas, Robinita Hood terrorizes the detestable sheriff and fights for the underprivileged, fostering ideas of charity as well as female empowerment. Parents may not like the spend of violence as a solution to conflict that is prevalent in this episode, and although no gets injure, plenty of money is stolen by the protagonist, albeit for a obliging cause. A discussion about injustice and what can be done about it would probably be useful after viewing this one with younger children.

All in all, this series does an admirable job of presenting an alternative to the typical Eurocentric heroes of the cartoon landscape. Keen and educational, with positive factual lessons imparted in each episode, “Happily Ever After” is a fun and effective procedure to launch children’s eyes to the diversity of fresh life, and to open them thinking early about respecting and appreciating other cultures. Unfortunately, HBO stopped producing current episodes of the series in the early 2000s, but families can calm salvage the present in various formats. I would give the series a solid A-minus, and recommend that parents or teachers ogle this with their children and wait on a dialogue about the issues explored.

This collection gives a fun and unusual wobble on classic fairy tales. I care for the fact that the characters describe a ample range of cultures and ethnicities.
