Possibly the best pure action film ever made and certainly the inspiration for many that have followed. Inspired by, rather than based on, a poem by Rudyard Kipling (who briefly appears as a character in the uncut version of the film in the guise of a journalist traveling with the British army) this tale of adventure, comedy, and action in 19th-century India under the British Raj has it all. Superb b&w cinematography (nominated for an Academy Award in Hollywood’s greatest year). Perfect casting, with Cary “Archie” Grant as the cockney Sgt. Cutter, Victor McLaghlen as gruff Master Sgt. MacChesney, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. as the dashing Sgt. Ballantine, Sam Jaffee (in full body makeup) as the humble water carrier Gunga Din, and the scene-stealing Eduardo Cianelli as a ferociously intelligent villain who is far more frightening than any ’30’s movie monster.

The setting, outside the small town of Lone Pine, in California’s eastern Sierras, beautifully mirrors that of northwestern India. Filmed in 100 degree heat, the picture’s sets and backgrounds have a look of sere authenticity rarely achieved by location filming in the ’30’s. The superb score borders on the operatic, with leitmotifs for characters as well as scenes.

I vividly remember thinking as a child, when I first saw a grainy print on our b&w tv, that this was the first time I had seen a non-white person in a film who was obviously smarter than the Caucasian heroes. Yes, Cianelli’s guru is a fanatic at the head of a cult of ritual murderers, but his discourse on what makes a good officer (”Great generals, gentlemen, are not made of jeweled swords and mustache wax. They are made of what is here [touches hand to head] and here [touches hand to heart]!”) has stayed with me ever since. Not to mention, before throwing himself into the cobra pit so that his soldiers will move against the British, that “India is my country, and I can die for my country as well as you for yours”.

Of course, there is also his rousing speech in the temple to his devotees to “Kill for the love of Kali, kill as you yourselves would be killed, kill for the love of killing…kill, kill, kill!” that carries rather chilling relevance to all too many fanatical groups today (though not worshippers of poor slandered Kali, whose temple in Kolkata I have visited). And it’s the bravery of a mistreated Hindu, Gunga Din, who saves the day, and British behinds.

This is a film that functions on many levels and inspired far more than the forgettable remake (SOLDIERS THREE). Its lack of availability on DVD in a fully restored version, together with the accompanying George Stevens, Jr. documentary footage on its making (including color film shot on the location), makes it the number one omission in the current DVD catalog.

This 1939 adventure classic rivals the Swiss Army knife for sheer utility: under director George Stevens’ sure hand, “Gunga Din” spins a heady mix of adventure, comedy, and (dare I say) drama from the few strands of a Kipling poem, and establishes a hugely influential model in the process. It’s a movie that rewards both the serious cineaste and the Saturday matinee escapist, a prototype for the Lucas and Spielberg adventure epics of the ’70s, and an enduring model for the classic buddy picture. Why, then, does it remain in home video exile?

Having grown up watching this on New York’s “Million Dollar Movie,” then airing on an RKO-owned TV station and thus dominated by the erstwhile studio’s earlier hits, I was oblivious to the abrupt edits and grainy image quality already creeping into the televised prints. It was enough to savor Cary Grant’s loopy, comic performance (as Archibald Cutter, arguably the closest he ever got onscreen to his true working class identity as Archie Leach), Doug Fairbanks, Jr.’s virtuous elegance, Victor McLaglen’s signature bluster, and Sam Jaffe’s soulful valor. By the time the veddy British colonel (Montagu Love) recited Kipling’s title poem as an elegy for a fallen hero, you couldn’t be sure if the print really had gotten that murky, or if your vision was blurred by the tears unleashed by the shameless (and highly effective) sentiment of the scene.

Flash forward to the ’70s and Los Angeles, when the feisty Z Channel, a cable upstart actually programmed by movie buffs, wanted to air the movie. They approached the director’s son, George Stevens, Jr., about finding a better print, perhaps one closer to the original release. Stevens the younger reportedly gave them more than they could have dreamed for–access to the director’s own print, which included footage never theatrically exhibited. Turns out that Stevens had shot footage that violated a curious proviso, imposed by the Kipling estate, that no attempt be made to dramatically portray the writer himself.

What to do, then, with the several key shots, during the exposition and again during that final, tear-jerking scene, with the mustachioed, bespectacled ‘journalist’ who, while unnamed, was clearly intended to be ol’ Rudyard himself? Sadly, the only practical solution was the cutting room floor or, in the case of that final shot, which showed the Kipling figure shoulder to shoulder with the surviving principals, to blow up the negative and crop the offending character from the frame.

With the loan of the director’s print, however, the Z Channel and its subscribers got to see a version of “Gunga Din” that solved the narrative hiccups that had plagued the movie for 30 years. Stevens’ beautifully-shot, sun-drenched images of his reimagined sub-continent were immaculate, convincingly conjuring its desolate beauty in Southern Californian locations (largely in the Simi Valley, if memory serves). The fluid editing, terrific stuntwork, and, of course, rapid-fire wisecracks of Grant, Fairbanks, and McLaglen underline an early fight sequence (an ambush by Thugs while the soldiers are searching a seemingly abandoned village) as THE blueprint for Indiana Jones, Butch and Sundance, and the “Lethal Weapon” pictures. (As for racial stereotypes, script writers Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur weren’t reactionaries; their fanatical assasins, based on historical fact, seem less far-fetched in the context of recent fundamentalist radicalism than they may have 20 years ago, while the title character, as portrayed by Jaffe, anchors his comic naivete with the gravity of his devotion and glimmers of fatalism.)

I managed to tape an airing on my Beta machine, and subsequent viewings made clear to this older, presumably more film-savvy buff what had been intuitive to the wide-eyed eight-year-old. This was, and is, a wonderful movie. In a year famously regarded as the high water mark for Hollywood’s “golden age” of studio-produced magic, “Gunga Din” still stands as a worthy peer to the year’s better-served, more easily obtained classics. Whatever legal hurdles presently block its release, “Din” almost certainly survives in a superb print.

Now, who’s going to have the taste, not to mention commercial wisdom (and it would be that) to bring this back to life on DVD? You might even tempt no less a light than Spielberg to ‘fess up and salute the source, much as Lucas did for the Criterion edition of Kurosawa’s ‘The Seventh Samurai.’ Come to think of it, perhaps Criterion would be the logical candidate to restore a ’30s adventure masterpiece to vivid glory.

“The Prince, The Princess and the Bee” focuses largely on the character of Shimmer. Fans of the series know that Shimmer is a jewel beetle that was adopted by the Spider family along with Bounce and Dragon. All of these children have lost their original family, but in this one — Shimmer has a chance to find hers — and it may just turn out to be royal. Sunny Patch is having its own royal event, with the birthday of Princess Honey of the bees. And when the Beetle Brigade flies by and pays their respects while on their way back to Mushroom Glen, Shimmer hears the tale of the Glen’s lost jewel beetle princess. She also learns that there’s a big ball soon being held there and she resolves to get to Mushroom Glen to see if she can find out her true history. When travel becomes an issue, she gets some help from an old friend from the first “Miss Spider” film — Stinky the stinkbug!

TPTP&TB is filled with wonderful lessons about bravery, respect, true courage and apprecation for one what has. None of the lessons are overbearing and the plot is quite fun to follow and enjoy.

Everything about this production is top-notch. The CGI animation is very well-formed and they don’t skimp on the background artwork either — with wonderful color textures and scenes. The film features three songs and a great audio and instrumental track to match. The characters are all generally quite likeable, or at least amusing/interesting.

The DVD includes a nice set of bonus features —

Mission Mushroom Glen – Interactive Game — Okay, so this one is fairly simple. It’s really just a quick little maze with a couple of obstacles to avoid. Still, it does seem to change every time, adding a bit of variety.

Two Interactive Sing-Alongs — This is a nice one. This features sing-along songs with colorful, bouncy lyrics for the songs “If I Were a Princess” and “High-Ho Away We Go” from the film.

In the Studio with Margo Timmins – The Making of “You Are Much Richer Than You Know” Song — Viewers get to see Margo Timmins performing the song and the song being mixed/edited.

“A Sticky Situation” – Bonus Episode from the TV Series — The bonus feature on here. A complete story from the TV show in which the kids help Spiderus out of some sticky amber and learn once again about being kind to all bugs.

English and Spanish 2.0 Audio — A nice feature (all the songs are available in Spanish too) dampened only slightly by the fact that there’s no alternate credits track and no Spanish subtitles / captions. Also, there’s no subtitles / captions whatsoever for the special features, only close-captions for the film itself.

I purchased this DVD because my grandson loved the original Miss Spider movie. He loves this one as well. He is two and would watch it over and over if I let him. It makes him giggle and he ooohs and aaaaahs over this movie. I enjoy it too!

Little Joe (Larry the Cucumber), is his father’s favorite son. When his brothers (the French peas) sell him into slavery in Dodge Ball City, he goes to work for McPotiphar. But just when he’s made employee of the month, Miss Kitty (Madame Blueberry) frames him for stealing. Is God really still with him? What could God’s plan possibly be?

Of course, anyone familiar with the Bible will recognize this as the story of Joseph from the Old Testament. Told in a completely fresh way, the theme of God working all things for good for those who follow Him comes through as loud and clear as it does in the original. Of course, the guys at Big Idea have had their own fun with it along the way, and the result is another episode filled with humor for the entire family. We even go back to the kitchen sink and get to see Cordy the Computer again.

A special mention must be made of the new silly song. “Belly Button,” as sung by boy band “Boyz in the Sink” is one of the best they’ve come up with in a while. I dare you not to laugh (and have it stuck in your head for the next few days.)

Big Idea continues to fill their DVD releases with fun bonus activities for the kids and interesting behind the scenes stuff for adults. There’s nothing unusual here if you’ve seen their other releases, but that’s not a bad thing by any stretch.

This DVD is a return to the fun of some of the earlier Bible stories done Veggie style. I enjoyed every minute of it and bet any Veggie fan will, too.

THE BALLAD OF LITTLE JOE is the Veggie Tale version of the Biblical story of Joseph. Bob and Larry try to explain why so many bad things happen to good people. Bob wants a straight Bible story and Larry wants a western. They compromise and THE BALLAD OF LITTLE JOE is the result. The film contains all the great humor and heart that have made Veggie Tales so special and popular. This episode includes the Silly Song of “Belly Button” sung by the In the Sink Boys. The song is hilarious and reminds one of the famous “Hamburger” song from a few years ago. Perhaps Mr. Lunt should sing more love longs. This is a great Veggie Tale episode and the DVD is a welcome addition for any collection. Kids love the Veggie Tales and so do adults. The episodes are made for kids, but adults will perhaps enjoy them even more. The DVD includes a commetary, several previews, a few games, and a few other bonus items.

I had the opportunity to watch “Illicit” on our local PBS station last night. I found it a huge disappointment that was nothing more or less than a rehash of repeated information that the viewer could glean from other sources in the media.

Buy,Download, Or Stream National Geographic: Illicit – The Dark Trade! Click Here

I actually found the “finger pointing” at other countries in regards to drug production, money laundering, human smuggling, counterfeiting, etc. to be totally offensive. The real responsibility for many of these problems falls primarily on the United States and, to a lesser extent, Western Europe. The demand in the United States for illicit drugs, cheap labor, higher profits, monetary investments (regardless of source) and cheap goods all work in favor of these criminals, yet too much time is spent blaming the “usual suspects” like Mexico, Columbia and China for the world’s ills.

The segment on money laundering really misses the point by focusing on Naples, Italy, while the state where I reside (Texas) would be a more appropriate target. To fully understand this concept, you’ll need a lesson in money laundering 101 and something that this film did not even touch…

Buy,Download, Or Stream National Geographic: Illicit – The Dark Trade! Click Here

Amounts may vary based on the models that are out there, but anywhere from .25 to .33 cents of every dollar in your pocket may have its origins in illicit business; in some states in the United States identified as High Risk Money Laundering and Related Financial Crimes Areas (HIFCA’s) – like Texas the percent may be higher. Does this mean that you directly took a dime or a quarter directly from a drug dealer? Of course not! But what has happened and what continues to happen is that the flow of illicit money into our economy is invested into legitimate business that ends up into EVERYONE’S pocket, including money that is used to finance our government services through taxes. Money, even though it has illicit origins, grows and multiplies through investment and reinvestment and here lies the big problem: How do you stop it without destabilizing our economy or the world’s economy? Can you stop it? Should you stop it?

Just think… If all sources of laundered money were to vanish from Texas or the United States tomorrow, it would have the potential of collapsing our economic system. As any economist could tell you, this is not as far-fetched as it sounds. Pointing fingers at government leaders in the former Soviet Bloc or officials in Mexico avoids a critical point that it is impossible for key officials in our own government not to know what is going on and to some degree have complicity in allowing it to continue.

If you were the mayor of a small town would you question the origins of investment money that is being used to build a new development too much? If you are an official in Laredo, Texas are you going to ask a lot of questions about what supports the types of businesses at the local mall (the stores rival that in any world-class city)? If you could stop all illicit money flowing into Texas would you do it knowing that the economy here would collapse and the money would just be washed in another state?

One chilling moment was when a Chinese officer of a company stated that the government (of China) did not view loss of life too seriously unless it was the loss of Chinese life. Great! But again it is our government’s failure for allowing a policy to import cheap goods from a country with a poor human rights record and total disregard for food and consumer safety that causes these problems. How many babies does it take to become brain-damaged from lead paint, or how many pets (or people) will die from poisoned wheat gluten added to our foods until our government will act?

The lenses of the National Geographic should be pointed at us and our leaders, not those of the Developing “Third” World. Our attitudes, policies and leaders are our own worst enemies. The National Geographic should step aside and leave the reporting and commentary on serious social, political and economic issues to somebody else.

This documentary will change the way you think about the goods you buy and how close and dangerous illicit trade is. In a gripping and thought provoking way, this video tells the story of how ‘bargain’ shopping for knock-off brand name goods can have severe consequences as it provides revenue to criminals. In addition to hard hitting stories on human trafficking, counterfeit medicines, and counterfeit luxury items, this video provides an excellent telling of the recent Panamanian cough syrup tragedy where over 100 people died as a consequence of an ingredient in the medicine that was intentionally diluted with anti-freeze so that the perpetrators could make a greater profit. I have used this video in my company and at pharmaceutical industry conferences to help tell the story of how vulnerable the supply chain is. With each showing I have had a strong positive response from audience members. Kudos to National Geographic, the producers and directors for such a fine piece of work!

“Baron Blood” is a very solid effort from Italian horror master Mario Bava. The film has the added bonus that it was made some fifteen plus years into his career. As a result, all of the Bava stylistic standbys are here (countless dramatic camera zooms, atmospheric lighting, bizarre and imaginative sets, and imaginative direction) and are executed with a growing assurance by Bava. The film’s plot is rather standard fare (actually resembling the “Evil Dead” and “Equinox” storyline) about a bloodthirsty, long dead baron brought back to life by the living. When unleashed, he soon begins to take victims. The murders and scenes of suspense are all handled with proffesional ease by Bava, which makes for a fun and classy film. As always, Bava’s excentricies transcend the admittedly formulaic plot, and his themes (a cursed family heritage, the occult and how people are drawn to it) add to the story. The only reason the film doesn’t get five stars is it is not as accesible to non-Bava devotees as some of his other films. It helps immeasurably to already be well-versed in his style of filmmaking. Also, the pace of the film is rather uneven. Once again, this uneven pacing of Bava is typical, and it helps to know his style. Otherwise, this is a fine effort by one of the unsung masters of cinema.

The Baron Von Kleist is a vague cousin of Count Dracula, Baron von Frankenstein, Mr. Hyde and this old chap – the Phantom of the Opera-. Yes Sir ! Altogether. It’s really a pleasure to find them reunited in BARON BLOOD, directed by Mario Bava in 1972.

The action is set in a castle ( ghosh !) near Vienna, Austria. Nowadays. Elke Sommer – the girl with the mini-skirt – is in love with the american heir of Baron Blood. And, blinded by love and the fog, they set free the bloody Baron and lose the incantation to send him back to hell ( ghosh ! again ).

So the baron, who loves to torture people before killing them, is going to chase the couple but won’t bother at all Joseph Cotten, the new owner of the castle.

The copy presented in this DVD presentation is first-class with no white or black spots at all. So you will enjoy the long chase in the fog and the interesting special effects. Of course, you have to be, in the first place, a movie lover who is curious and who won’t be afraid of the numerous zooms (forwards and backwards) put in BARON BLOOD, a Mario Bava gimmick by excellence.

A DVD dedicated to the nostalgic ones.

As the mother of twins, one hearing and one deaf, I have had the opportunity to check out many programs for teaching ASL to small children. This is by far the best series out there. Most other products are so boring that parents must struggle to stay awake during the production, and there is no way a toddler would tolerate a viewing. My 2-year-old twins request Signing Time all of the time. At home they want the DVDs playing almost constantly. In the car my hearing daughter starts asking for the Signing Time CD before I even have her strapped into her carseat. My 2-year-old deaf daughter is using 5-sign sentences, which is almost unheard of for the deaf child of hearing parents. My extended family owns a total of 6 sets of Signing Time. Whenever my daughters’ cousins have a birthday they ask for the latest Signing Time DVDs. Children of all ages love this product.

One of my friends recently introduced me and my son to the Signing Time videos. Her daughter is 14 months and knows over 100 signs from watching these videos for the past few months. My 18 month old hearing son and I both love these videos too! We’ve been signing a bit with him since he was 8 months with signs I’d learned long ago. He was quickly outgrowing the signs that we knew so we were looking for something more so we could all learn more. We tried a couple of other signing videos and they were OK, but the Signing Time and Baby Signing Time videos are captivating and fun, for him AND for me! They are well organized with a great, quick paced mix of humans, animation, singing, speaking and signing. I like how each song at the end of a segment is like a review for the words learned in that segment. This video – My Day – is as good as all of the other Signing Time videos I’ve watched. My son is fascinated with the daily things they do on the video anyway, especially brushing teeth and hair! My son usually picks up a few signs from each video the first time watching them, and it’s been wonderful to be able to understand him when he wants something! I highly recommend these videos to everyone – they’re the best I’ve seen!

TOTALLY USELESS DVD

I’m rating this 3 stars because of the story not because of quality. I’ll explain later. The plot of this movie features 6 black bikers out to get revenge on a white biker gang. Starring Gene Washington(San Francisco 49ers) Carl Eller(Minnesota Vikings) Mercury Morris (Miami Dolphins) Lem Barney (Detroit Lions) Willie Lanier (Kansas City Chiefs & ”Mean” Joe Greene(Pittsburgh Steelers). Plus many other NFL football players from the 1970’s as the rival biker gang. Bubba & his 5 buddies have just been discharged from the army after serving in Vietnam. On the way back to their homes Bubba receives a general delivery letter giving him the tragic news his brother Eddie was murdered. The letter is from Bubba’s mama who begs him not to investigate just leave it alone. The movie begins with Eddie being killed on a football field at night. Seems he was dating Jenny King a white girl whose brother Moose is the leader of a huge & rough biker gang. These scenes are poorly lit & viewers can barely tell they’re seeing a football field never mind it’s supposed to be night. A few character parts are overplayed a bit as well. The guys stop at a beer & truck stop along the way. They are treated very rudely by white patrons & especially by Flora who owns the place. Why would anyone start trouble with these tough muscular dudes? No wonder they tore the place apart on their way out! Next Bubba goes to a hometown bar looking for info. The customer who gives him help is happy to oblige-after Bubba buys him a few beers! The actor playing this role is great but the role of the bartender doesn’t work as well. And when Bubba goes to the police station seeking help it only gets worse. The role of officer Bill is played by actor Sam Goodlue. He delivers his lines with almost no emotions at all. Simply awful acting. At the rumble at the end of the movie the 6 blacks have the upper hand-until Snake puts a lit flare in his gas tank & aims it straight for them! I wonder why they cut off the credits at the end? Also I feel the picture is fair because this movie was obviously very low budget not because of the dvd transfer. Anyway it’s great fun. Enjoy!

There is a scene in Sleepless in Seattle when Sam (Tom Hanks), Suzy (Rita Wilson), and Greg (Victor Garber) are discussing what are frequently referred to as “chick flicks.” Whatever the criteria for selection, there are many candidates for this category which usually include Steel Magnolias. After seeing it again recently, I decided that calling it a “chick flick” demeans what director Herbert Ross and his cast and crew achieved. This film really does have wide and deep appeal to both and men and women of all ages. Of greater significance, it seems even better each time it is seen again. The reverse is true of almost all other films which touch our hearts. As in Robert Harling’s play on which it is based, all of the main characters are women: Clairee Belcher (Olympia Dukakis), M’Lynn Eatenton (Sally Field), Truvy Jones (Dolly Parton), Annelle Depuy Desoto (Daryl Hannah), Ouiser Boudreaux (Shirley MacLaine), and Shelby Eatenton Latcherie (Julia Roberts). MacLaine and Roberts were later nominated for an Academy Award as best actress in a supporting role; a split vote probably cost both an Oscar. My own opinion is that Field, Dukakis, and Hannah were equally deserving of that nomination. In terms of plot, not a great deal happens. The film’s energy is established and then sustained by the interactions between and among the five older women. Keep in mind that this was originally a play whose plot focused almost entirely on the shared experiences of those women. Some of the scenes are hilarious, with MacLaine and Dukakis primarily responsible. However, the film also includes one extended situation which has a genuinely sad conclusion. (It would be a disservice to those who have not as yet seen the film to say any more about that.) I think the acting is first-rate throughout. Most of this film is highly entertaining but whenever necessary and appropriate, Ross examines serious issues with great skill. Two points need to be reiterated: Steel Magnolias can and will appeal to men as well as to women, and, it is more enjoyable each time it is seen again. Those who share my high regard for it are urged to check out Fried Green Tomatoes (1991).

With all the attention Julia Roberts is getting these days, it’s an excellent time to buy and watch the film that contains her best performance, Steel Magnolias.

As the doomed but optimistic daughter of Sally Field and Tom Skerrit, she holds her own in a cast of movie divas, including Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Dolly Parton, and (in her best film work, as well), Darryl Hannah.

The film is basically a warm, upbeat character study of a group of women friends, played out in a beautiful Louisiana bayou town. The story begins with Roberts’ wedding, then carries on through the ups and downs of the friends’ lives. The male characters in the story are barely seen, and occasionally come across as insensitive (Roberts’ husband), or buffoons (Hannah’s boyfriend), yet one of the joys of this movie is that you come to love the women so much, you don’t mind the men’s shortcomings, and start liking them, too!

The standout performances of the film are from Roberts, and MacLaine, as a spinster with a sarcastic tongue, and, ultimately, a heart of gold. Her scenes with Dukakis are hilarious, yet full of the warmth that makes this film so special!

A couple of things usually overlooked, but worth mentioning; the enchanting film score (I wish the soundtrack would be rereleased!), and a bit part by Janine Turner, before ‘Northern Exposure’ made her a star.

This is a very special film, for both Roberts’ fans, and anyone who wants to believe in the healing powers of friendship. Yes, this film can be defined as a ‘chick flick’, but guys, you’ll end up enjoying it, too!

I remember when I first saw this movie, around age 13, I had no idea who the Man in Black was through the entirety of the first act. Sure, it’s apparent now, given the benefit of hindsight, but because of the actor’s anonymity at the time I never made the obvious connection. On top of that, most of the rest of the cast was unknown to me as well (except for the one non-actor, Monsieur Roussimoff, a.k.a. Andre the Giant). The sweeping anonymity of the company allowed the film to do two things: first, the audience isn’t distracted by the presence of the Big Star; and second, unknown actors allow for no preconceived notions of their characters. Which in turn allows the filmmakers to subvert character types, and insert some true surprises into the story.

Which, to make a long point even longer, is the whole ethos of the film

William Goldman’s book “The Princess Bride”, on which this film is based, intended to tell only the ‘good parts’ version of the story of Westley and Buttercup. That is, it would leave in the high drama and action and romance, while curbing the back-stories and superfluous exposition. William Goldman, in his role as adaptor of the book into a screenplay, remains fiercely loyal to this proposition. He’s constructed a framing device, wherein a grandfather is reading to his sick grandson, which allows him to make meta-fictional comments on the seemingly typical fairy tale being told. In doing so, however, he subverts the fairy tale’s typicalness, making it much more surprising and revelatory. At one point the grandson worriedly asks about the fate of the villain: “Who kills Humperdinck?” The grandfather calmly answers, “No one. He lives.” Which is not only a true statement, for that is exactly what happens, but it doesn’t even come close to ruining the end of the story. On the contrary, it increases the suspense, and makes what does happen quite astonishing.

Rob Reiner, in only his third time out in the director’s chair, does a wonderful job of translating Goldman’s script to the screen. He utilizes elements, whether by choice or by budgetary restraints, that would at first appear incongruous, but work as a whole to keep the audience off-balance, and thus more receptive to the surprises the movie has in store for them.

The acting is, stylistically, all over the place. It ranges from the unabashed over-the-top passion of Mandy Patinkin (Inigo Montoya), to the bumbling buffoonery of Wallace Shawn (Vizzini), to the gentle anti-acting of Andre the Giant (Fezzik), to the unsubtle Snidely Whiplash villainy of Chris Sarandon (Prince Humperdinck), to the Borscht Belt mugging of Billy Crystal (Miracle Max), to the icy malice of Christopher Guest (Count Rugen), and the stark realism of Robin Wright (Buttercup, the title character). No two actors take the same road, but they all somehow arrive at the same location. Cary Elwes, playing the hero, is the only one who falls easily into all these styles, as the situation demands it. He is menacing, suave, cool, funny, athletic, simple, sweet, fierce, etc., etc., etc. Elwes and Patinkin are the standouts for me — their swordfight atop the Cliffs of Insanity is technically brilliant, literate, and extremely entertaining — but the entire cast effective. Even the smaller roles (British comedians Mel Smith and Peter Cook each have brief but memorable one-joke cameos) make their mark.

The film’s musical score, composed by ‘Dire Straits’ frontman Mark Knoplfer, swings and sways from moment to moment. In one, he uses stark, bouncy lines to underscore a simple scene of Fezzik and Inigo trading rhymes. In the next, he layers synthesized strings to call up the gravity of the Man in Black’s chase. My only problem with the music is the song written for the closing credits: it’s weepy and melodramatic, without the sense of subversive fun that had prevailed up until that point.

The sets and scenery switch back and forth between real and obviously fake. Filmed in and around the English countryside, most of the outdoor locations (the severe valley, the woods) breathe reality and beauty into the story. Others, such as the Fire Swamp, the Pit of Despair, and the plateau above the Cliffs of Insanity, have the phony feel of a Hollywood soundstage. Again, the film keeps the audience on their toes.

So now that I am 27 instead of 13, and know back-to-front the filmmographies of all the actors involved, and have seen the film more than a dozen times, and can quote lines from it at the drop of a hat, do I find it any less appealing than on that first viewing? Of course not. Goldman and Reiner’s film rewards multiple viewings, with its wit, its playfulness, and most importantly, its subversiveness. Will there ever be a time when I tire of watching it? A time like that is right now, as Vizzini might say, “inconceivable”.

The movie primarily takes a look at two Holllwood stunt woman: Jeannie Epper, who doubled for Lynda Carter during the Wonder Woman series run, has been working in the business for approx 30yrs and comes from a whole family of professional stunt men and women; and Zoe Bell, a New Zealand native & young up and comer who doubled for Xena during that shows six seasons who is now looking to make her mark here in L.A./Hollywood.

We get the background of each woman, a look at the difficulties that women face in the business, a lot of celebrity interviews, and some additional celebrity cameos that the filmakers shot while making the film.

What I particularly enjoyed was the immediate bond between Epper and Bell. Epper seems to take Bell under her wing rather quickly by helping with valuable training and allowing her to stay at her home while she struggles to get work and make her own name in the stunt woman profession. It’s a nice inside look that goes to show not everyone in “the business” is just out for themselves. Epper comes across with genuine eagerness, kindness, and integrity as she guides Bell through the Hollywood machine.

If the plot line so far interests you, or your a fan of shows like Wonder Woman and Xena, then this documentary should not disappoint.

Recommended.

This movie explores the lives of 2 incredible stuntwomen: Jeannie Epper (Wonder Woman, et. al.) and Zoe Bell (Xena). It provides an interesting look at the newcomer, Zoe, and her struggles in finding her way into this predominantly male profession. The profile of the legendary Jeannie Epper was very intriguing to me. At 60+ years of age, Jeannie is still going strong and still pursuing work. Amanda Micheli has done an incredible job putting this film together.

The DVD also contains some great interview footage with Lynda Carter and Lucy Lawless. The only disappointing aspect is the fact that more of Jeannie’s Wonder Woman footage was not included. As I understand it, Micheli wanted more footage, but Warner Brothers was not cooperative. Who knows why???!!!

I also had the privilege of seeing this film in the theatre, along with a live Q & A sessions with Lynda Carter, Jeannie Epper, and Amanda Micheli. What a thrill. It was so great to hear Lynda and Jeannie recount their days on the Wonder Woman set and give praise to each other for their respective performances. Amanda also gave great insight into the making of the film and what her vision had been for the project. She is a super lady herself and presents a terrific documentary that you will want to check out.
