When I first heard about this film, I was less than impressed and had no intentions of seeing it. Once, however, I saw the preview at another film, I decided to give it a try and I’m glad I did.

“The House Bunny” is a charming and funny little film starring Anna Faris as Shelly, a playboy bunny who lives a carefree life in Hugh Hefner’s mansion. After her 27th birthday, she finds herself suddenly evicted from her perfect life, unaware of how she can make a living. When she stumbles onto a college campus and discovers that sororities slightly resemble her former playful lifestyle, she becomes determined to be the house mother of a failing sorority full of misfits and unpopular girls. Through her determined spirit, willingness to encourage others and using her sexuality in a positive way, Shelley works her magic and helps her girls to become of the belles of sorority row. And in the process, the young women teach Shelly some valuable lessons as well.

Faris gives a good comedic performance, giving the character a sweet, likeable naivety. I liked that the character wasn’t bitchy or a diva, simply a kind girl who lived an exotic life but must now adjust to her new situation and envirnoment. The supporting cast is funny but the brunt of the film falls on Faris, who delivers and proves she can carry a film. Notable supporting characters include Rumor Willis (the daugther of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore)former American Idol alum, Kathernine McPhee and Colin Hanks, son of Tom Hanks.

This is a fun date movie and I recommend it as a perfect summer comedy movie. Worth a trip to the theater!

“I’m an expert in parties and boys. I’m a Bunny! Men write to me from prison.”

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Anna Faris (Smiley Face; Southern Belles) is the most underrated comic actress in film today. In a world of male-driven comedies, Anna Faris has become the Carole Lombard and Judy Holliday of our times. Her delightfully funny performance is reason enough to see The House Bunny, a 2008 romantic comedy film written by Legally Blonde screenwriters, Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah Lutz, and produced by Adam Sandler’s production company. Faris plays Shelley Darlington, a wide-eyed, clueless twenty-seven-year-old Playboy bunny, who gets banned from Hef’s Playboy mansion due to her age (she is “59 in bunny years”). She then becomes the house mother of the Zeta Alpha Zeta sorority, and sets out to help the Zetas discover their inner bunnies, much to the ire of rival sorority, Phi Iota Mu. (This movie should have been subtitled, “The Blonde Leading the Blondes.”) Ultimately, Shelly is forced to choose between a dream centerfold shoot and the family that needs her the most. Is this movie silly? No, it’s frickin’ hilarious. Is it predictable? Well, yes. Will it offend feminists? All of my feminist friends couldn’t believe that I would “waste” my time on such a movie. However, in response to the film’s feminist critics, it should be noted that after catching the eye of Oliver (Tom Hank’s son, Colin Hanks), Shelly not only realizes that it takes more than her sexy Bunny ways to succeed in life, but also that her Bunny lessons have transformed the Zetas into very superficial women. Highly recommended for anyone wanting a laugh. This was one of the funniest films of 2008.

Doris Day shines in this extravaganza, which was to be her last big musical; she is flawless vocally, and the melodic score contains some of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart’s most loved songs.

Her co-stars are equally strong, with the rambunctious pair of Jimmy Durante (as Doris’ father) and Martha Raye (as Durante’s ever-patient fiancée), and when either of them are on the screen, it is mega-kilowatt entertainment. Nearly 30 years before this film, Durante had been in cast of the original 1934 Broadway production, and it’s also wonderful to hear Martha Raye sing the “Why Can’t I ?” duet with Doris, as her great talents as a singer were rarely recognized.

Always a favorite of mine, Stephen Boyd is excellent as Doris’ love interest. His beautiful speaking voice, mellow with a slight tinge of Irish, does well with the spoken/sung intro to “Sawdust, Spangles, and Dreams”, but his two songs (the other being “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World”), are dubbed in by the rich voice of James Joyce.

Many genuine circus acts perform throughout the film, and the stunt work for the stars is seamlessly edited in. Jumbo the elephant of course, is the 5th star of the film, and he gives a “thumbs up” performance.

The lavish production has many magical moments, and though most of it is pure fantasy, it captures the feel of “on the road performers” that anyone who has done a lot of touring in any theatrical field will appreciate.

Kudos to director Charles Winters, and cinematographer William H. Daniels for their work in this film, which is superb family entertainment. Total running time is 123 minutes.

The song list is:

1: “Over and Over Again” ~ Day

2: “The Circus is on Parade” ~ Durante/Raye/Day

3: “Why Can’t I ?” ~ Day/Raye

4: “This Can’t be Love” ~ Day

5: “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World” ~ Boyd (Joyce) reprise: Durante

6: “My Romance” ~ Day

7: “Little Girl Blue” ~ Day

8: “Sawdust, Spangles, and Dreams” ~ Boyd (Joyce) and cast.

BILLY ROSE’S JUMBO makes it’s long-awaited DVD release. The movie was one of the last hig musical hurrah’s from MGM, and it was also Doris Day’s last movie musical role. She shines as Kitty Wonder, the bareback-riding queen of the Wonder Circus.

Based around the classic Rodgers and Hart musical (with a new storyline devised by Sidney Sheldon). Pop Wonder (Jimmy Durante, who also headlined the original 30s’ Hippodrome production) owns the magical Wonder Circus, famous for it’s star attraction, Jumbo the elephant. His daughter Kitty, and on-again off-again squeeze Lulu (Martha Raye) complete his family. When the mysterious Sam Rawlins (Stephen Boyd) arrives to become the new tightrope aerialist, Kitty instantly falls in love with him, but Sam hides the secret that he is the son of the Wonders’ main adversary, John Noble (Dean Jagger) owner of the Noble Circus.

Tempers and emotions run high as John Noble takes away Pop’s beloved circus..and even Jumbo. It’s up to Sam to unite the feuding clans and reclaim Kitty’s heart.

Lavish, tuneful entertainment. Doris Day suits the role of Kitty to a tee and looks lovely in her Morton Haack-designed costumes. Stephen Boyd aquits himself quite well in a rare musical role. Jimmy Durante and Martha Raye are wonderful as feuding `odd couple’ Pop and Lulu.

Several real circus acts and performers appear to add extra authenticity to the circus scenes; Doris Day performed many of her own stunts. Songs include “Over and Over Again” (Day performs most of her acrobatic tricks here), “Why Can’t I?” (beautifully staged with Day and Raye perched on the rear of a caravan traveling in the moonlight), “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World” (Day and Boyd waltz to the strains of the caliope), “Little Girl Blue” (Day soberly wanders the empty bigtop following the Noble takeover), “This Can’t Be Love” (which Day triumphantly sings while riding her white horse around the bigtop), “My Romance” (which Day sings after Boyd saves her from a near-fatal trapeze stunt) and “Sawdust, Spangles and Dreams” (the rousing finale).

In the 30+ years it took for Rodgers and Hart’s circus musical to get to Hollywood, the score drastically changed (the original Broadway score also included the numbers “The Song of the Roustabouts”, “Laugh”, “Women”, “Memories of Madison Square Garden” and “Diavolo”, all cut for various reasons) and the score was interpolated with “This Can’t Be Love” from Rodgers and Hart’s THE BOYS FROM SYRACUSE.

JUMBO originally opened on Broadway in 1935, lavishly-produced by Billy Rose (hence his tribute being added to the movie title). The musical made history being staged in the huge Hippodrome and featuring many circus acts. A real trapeze was used for some numbers. However the show was very costly to run and it closed after 233 performances. The original cast included famous clown `Poodles’ Hanneford, Gloria Grafton and Jimmy Durante.

As an added bonus for the movie’s DVD edition, the original Overture has been restored to the movie for the first time since the original theatrical engagements. A vintage short and the original trailer are also included. BILLY ROSE’S JUMBO is back and better than ever!

For years I had been vaguely aware of the existence of this film, but wrote it off as being a product of it’s time such as “Cheaper by the Dozen”, which by todays standard is SO DATED. Boy, was I wrong. Papa’s Delicate Condition was funny, witty, and refreshing. Jackie Gleason’s sly sarcasm is as hilarious as it is timeless. For those of you who only know Jackie Gleason from “The Honeymooners”, you will be delighted to see Gleason’s artistry go way beyond his character as Ralph Cramden. Though the movie is filled with great character actors, Gleason definitely carries the picture.

I found the relationship between the father and his youngest daughter to be particularly endearing. In one scene, he tells the older sister and the mother to stop ganging up on the little girl. It is at moments like that which cause the picture to break away from the mold and stereotypes of it’s era.

This is a great family picture. The storyline is simple enough for children to follow along, while the adults will enjoy the great writing, snappy comebacks, and saltiness of the dialogue.

I agree with the previous reviewer that said that the story was a little weak. It is for this reason that I am not giving the movie 5 stars. Do not confuse a weak storyline, however, with great dialogue and acting. Not only is it entertaining, the color and cinematography make this a visual stunner.

I am surprised that this movie has not made the crossover from VHS to DVD when so many less satisfying movies have. Perhaps, like myself, they judged the movie by it’s cover..and are only now just discovering what a gem it really is.

When Jackie Gleason passed some years ago I remember a couple of tidbits from his obituary. One relates a doctor telling him that he had lung cancer and suggesting that he cut back on his smoking. Heeding his doctor’s advice Gleason cut back from six packs a day to four packs. Gleason had his own little Algonquin Round Circle that consisted of Salvador Dali and Mickey Mantle among others. What did these seeming unlike public figures have in common? A love of the bottle. Gleason made something of a mark in films after his “Honeymooners” heyday. He was absolutely mesmerizing as Minnesota Fats in “The Hustler”. I’m still waiting for a DVD release of “Soldier in the Rain” with Steve McQueen. “Papa’s Delicate Condition” is an interesting film in that it was probably promoted as a comedy but dig a little deeper it’s a sober look at the scourge of alcoholism. Gleason’s Jack Griffiths is one of those larger-than-life gregarious personalities whose impulsive behaviour, usually when soused, that wins over some people particularly his impressionable six year old daughter. Not so his wife and older daughter. Why I don’t rate this film five stars is it’s not written explicitly that Griffiths is a self-destructive personality. Gleason, probably through personal experience, reads between the lines like he implicitly knows Jack Griffiths. This is not a slurring, stumbling, stereotypical drunk. Griffiths on the surface appears rather sober but underneath is destroying himself with liquor. This is an average film raised to the next level by a great performance. If your a fan of Gleason’s this film is essential.

Samurai Champloo has become one of the greatest anime series ever with this final volume. It ranks well beside Cowboy Bebop, Watanabe’s other masterpiece of anime, and in many ways surpasses it. Watanabe’s series, though based in fuedal Japan, does not limit itself to those restrictions, instead taking a surrealistic view of history, which allows for both minor and huge discrepancies, and the larger the lie, the funnier the episode. Along with the comedy, the story centers around great action and even greater music.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Samurai Champloo, Volume 7! Click Here

But in this volume, drama dominates. All of the characters meet the conclusion of their own personal stories, while wrapping up their story as a group. Jin faces a man directly linked to his past as a swordsman; Mugen faces a family bent on revenge for Mugen’s past life as a pirate; and Fuu finally meets the Sunflower Samurai. Though you may think I spoiled it, just watch and see, for none of these endings end exactly as you would expect.

Then, after all three of these linked episodes are finished, you are treated to a Reggae-style rap sung partly in English but mostly in Japanese. To me, this was the perfect ending theme to a series that relied heavily on its music.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Samurai Champloo, Volume 7! Click Here

So as not to spoil, I’ll finish my review saying this. The end of Samurai Champloo is both exciting and a bit sad. It’s a perfect conclusion to a perfect anime series, and sufficiently answers all the questions left behind in the previous volumes. If you have any anime sense, then you’ve already seen this anime and love it. If you don’t, then hurry and get this so that you can say you were one of the first to see one of the best. This anime was definitely worth me collecting every separate volume, and I’d recommend the same for anyone else out there. Right now, I’m hoping Watanabe takes the same direction he did with Cowboy Bebop and makes the Samurai Champloo movie.

The finale of this brilliant show surpasses all expectations by having an exciting nail-biting ending. Although there are only 3 episodes on this disc, the episodes form a long feature length ending. Our heroes finally arrive at their long-awaited destination only to find unwelcome people from their pasts waiting for them. The show clearly answers all the questions it has raised during previous episodes and ties up loose ends. We find out about Jin’s past and why he killed his Sensei. We also find out the reason behind the motivations of previous assassins. Does Fuu find her “samurai who smells of sunflowers?” – well that would be telling. However, be prepared for an emotional ending as it is never certain who will survive as Jin and Mugen finally meet their match. A great ending to a great series.

Unfortunately there is at this time no second season – only the 26 episodes already released. The mention of a second series is due to the move from Fuji TV to Broadcast Satellite Fuji in Japan. The move caused a three month stop gap in the airing of the programme, so the official designation of the First Season are episodes 1 to 17 and of the Second Season 18-26. This can be seen by the preview advertisement contained in the extras in the DVD Volume 5 for “Season Two.” However, I am still praying that another second series will be made!

If a flying fortress, technology from the past, a hero with possessed powers, and a moral struggle with nature and humankind sound familiar, it’s because they’ve all been done before. Origin doesn’t add much to the pot in these areas, featuring rather depthless characters and a plot with less twists than Interstate 40. It borrows heavily from Ghibli greats (Nausicaa, Castle in the Sky, Mononoke), but lacks the charm and conviction of these films. Still, Origin will likely win its share of fans thanks to the visual adventure and immersive backgrounds. If characters and plot aren’t an issue, and you just want to be entertained, the eye candy that is Origin may be for you.

reading the mediocre reviews here at amazon for this anime really had me questioning my purchase, but i am glad to say i really enjoyed my ‘origin’ experience. i just didn’t watch it thinking “well…this has all been done before”….it was more like “ahhh that’s really cool and a creative way at looking at the future”, and the ‘feel’ of the film is very nice. sorta laid back with no outragous child-tantrum moments most anime’s seem to be plagued with. english voice acting was great, music was great, the whole thing was just great and really really well drawn. very vibrant and clean colors, textures were excellent. i don’t regret this purchase at all.

Movie Title: Zulu
Average customer review:

Zulu is available for streaming or downloading.

Click Here to Stream or Download Zulu

Zulu is one of the greatest historical action movies ever made, and one of the great war movies. It is based on what historian Michael Glover terms “the most highly decorated battle in British history”, the defence of Rorke’s Drift during the Zulu War of 1879. Eleven of the defenders received Britain’s highest award for military valor, the Victoria Cross–the rarely awarded counterpart of the US Congressional Medal of Honor. The movie is a landmark in the art of cinema for its extraordinary combination of location, cross-cultural engagement, a real story, good script and fine cast. This 1964 film never looks tired, despite my many years of rerunning it in 16mm, the Criterion laserdisc, and now the Front Row Entertainment Inc. DVD. Anecdotally, military colleges have used Zulu to show the power of directed massed musketry, and leadership and teamwork in combat.

Zulu is the greatest achievement of the career of British actor Stanley Baker, who co-produced with US-born, formerly blacklisted director Cy Endfield. Nothing else in the genre really measures up, including Endfield’s so-called “prequel”, Zulu Dawn, or other epics based on British colonial wars, such as Khartoum. It was filmed on location in the grandeur of Natal, South Africa, with descendants of the Zulu warriors who took part in the original action portraying their forebears. The prominent Zulu politician and traditional chief, Mangosuthu Buthelezi, plays the Zulu leader, his distant relative Cetewayo. Mass Zulu participation in the project guaranteed the uplifting dignity and authenticity of cross-cultural characterisations of the film. Early magnificent scenes with masses of Zulu extras show the Zulu royal kraal, with a mass wedding of warriors in progress as news arrives of the annihilation of a strong British force at Isandhlwana. These unique scenes probably never could be filmed again because of social and cultural change. The nearest conceptual comparison in the war genre that comes to mind is the cross-cultural aspect of Tora! Tora! Tora!

Stanley Baker believed so strongly in Zulu, despite difficulties in raising finance, that he sank much of his own money into it. Playing a British Army engineer officer thrust by events into leading a desperate defensive action following the disaster of Isandhlwana, he heads a strong cast, including a young Michael Caine as an upper crust infantry officer. There are wonderful cameo roles by Jack Hawkins as an alcoholic missionary; Nigel Green as the imperturbable Colour Sergeant Bourne, always ready with a calming order or a bayonet; James Booth as Private Hook, portrayed as a malingerer who is perhaps the least likely Victoria Cross winner; Patrick Magee as Surgeon-Major Reynolds, continuing up to his elbows in surgery even as Zulus try to break in. The narration by Richard Burton is very fine, and in character with the Welsh origin of the British soldiers. Welsh and Zulu singing on the cinematic battlefield is spine-tingling.

This film deserves the very best frame-by-frame and soundtrack digital restoration and DVD transfer that technology can provide, working from an original 70mm print. Meanwhile, the Front Row Entertainment Inc DVD, about the equal of the Criterion laserdisc, will have to do. The image quality is much less sharp than we now expect of new DVD releases. The color and audio are just passable. It is in widescreen format.

Stanley Baker died in 1976. Cy Endfield died in 1995. Other players who have passed on include Jack Hawkins in 1973; Nigel Green in 1972; and Patrick Magee in 1982. Before all key players in this project die, a retrospective on the making of the film–interviews, at least, with participants like Michael Caine and Mangosuthu Buthelezi–should be compiled for a new collector’s edition DVD. At the time of writing, Sir Michael Caine (age 69) seems to be enjoying the afterglow of his prolific career in cinema and dabbles in restaurants, and Dr Buthelezi (age 74) is Minister for Home Affairs in the Government of South Africa. James Booth (age 69) continues on stage and screen.

Michael Glover’s book, “Rorke’s Drift” (Wordsworth Editions 1997) is recommended reading for anyone with a detailed interest in the historical background.

In January, 1879, a column of British soldiers comprised primarily of the 24th Regiment of Foot, South Wales Borderers, was wiped out at the base of the mountain, Isandhlwana, in Natal, South Africa. A large contingent of 4,000 Zulu warriors then moved on to the undermanned expedition base at Rorke’s Drift. This movie tells the incredible true story of the subsequent battle, and of the victory of the 90 some British soldiers, many of them sick, who held their post in the face of overwhelming odds. See Donald Morris’ definitive book, _The Washing of the Spears_, against which this film account compares most favorably.

This neglected classic was filmed at a time when it was still just possible to associate the word “glory” with military victory– without a sneer. The makers of the film avoid preaching and just let the battle tell the tale of the men of both sides. The British soldiers are not the “good guys” nor are the Zulus “bad guys,” and the lone derogatory comment about the fighting ability of the Zulus is instantly rebuffed by a tough Boer cavalryman who says, “And just who do you think is coming to wipe out your little garrison, the Grenadier Guards?” This is a soldier’s story about a soldier’s fight.

Did the Welsh really sing “Men of Harlach” as they manned their mealie-bag barricades?

Did the Zulus really render a warrior’s salute as they broke off the action on the second day of the battle?

It doesn’t matter. The film is accurate in the historical basics that really count.

Beautifully filmed on location, with an outstanding, stirring score by John Barry, this film features solid but appropriately understated performances by Stanley Baker, Michael Caine, and Jack Hawkins.

I hesitate to mention the hideous, politically correct pre-quel, _Zulu Dawn_ which was released almost 25 years after _Zulu_, but any viewer who has the unhappy experience of seeing _Zulu Dawn_ should not be put off from seeing _Zulu_, which shines in comparison.

Whether one is interested in military history or a “movie for men who like movies,” _Zulu_ is a worthy addition to a film library. From first to last, it is a compelling, superior film.

60. Take Me Out to the Ball Game: Fred becomes umpire for the little-league baseball game between coach Barney’s Bedrock Giants and the Grittsburg Pyrites, but his calls produce unsportsmanlike behavior in the Giants’ fathers.

While I am not yet aware of the extra’s on this DVD set, I can tell you this about the 2nd season (1961-62). The 2nd season helped better establish the modern Stone-age family. In at least 6 of the episodes, Mel Blanc was absent due to illness so Daws Butler had to supply Barney Rubble’s voice (thus making Barney sound more like Yogi Bear). New characters introduced are Mr. Slate, Fred’s no-nonsense boss (voiced by John Stephenson; Mr. Slate had one cameo in the 1st season, but didn’t look or talk at all like the Mr. Slate you probably remember), Arnold the smart allecky paperboy (voiced by Don Messick), Joe Rockhead, an alternative buddy of Fred’s and Mrs. Slaghoople, Wilma’s “battleaxe” mother (actually, Wilma’s maiden name started out as Pebble but that name probably went out the window when their child Pebbles was born).

Highlights include a voice cameo from Hoaggy Carmichael (Fred warbles a cheezy rendition of “Stardust”), Fred and Barney not speaking to each other after Fred insults Barney (”Did you get the lisence of that truck, Betty?”), Barney gets a job working for Fred’s company since Mr. Slate finds out he’s his nephew, Wilma gets a job as emcee of the TV series The Happy Housewife Show leaving one not-so-happy husband to get his own dinner (”Make your hubby happy, keep your hubby happy… with Rockenspiel!”), Fred and Barney are judges of a beauty contest and women across town are trying to get their attention (leaving 2 understandably jealous wives), Fred goes on a gambling streak which winds up owing paperboy Arnold lots of money (”BET! Bet, bet bet….”), Dino gets a part on the Adventures of Sassie show with fred as Dino’s agent (”At the end of the show, even the villains smile!”), Barney coaches a Little League baseball team and Fred volunteers as umpire (”I call ‘em as I see ‘em”), Barney and Betty stay at the Flintstones’ house after plumbing problems but it isn’t long before their welcome is worn (”Shhh, the girls’ll think we’re fightin’, Fred”), Wilma and Betty get invited to the Ambassadors’ Reception but neither they nor Fred and Barney are well received since they’re not rich snobs (that is, until Fred and Barney unwittingly prevent a burglary), Fred writes a vitriolic protest letter to his boss when he doesn’t get the raise he expected (Wilma saves the day here) and Barney plays a practical joke on Fred (”You, Barney Rubble, are a counterfietter!”).

The 1st season helped get the Flintstones started and the 2nd season had the characters better established for Fred (Allan Reed), Wilma(Jean VanderPyl), Barney (Blanc) and Betty (Bea Benederet).

The writing behind the film is excellent, the idea of teens imitating the movies with more twists than twister. An action packed slasher movie with mystery behind it all no imortal killer just messed up teenagers. It was impossible to guess who done the murders from the begining, you may think you know who is doing the killings then somthing happens and turns your eye to someone else. Overall a fantastic beginning to the best horror trilogy around. The DVD has a few interesting special features, go for this special edition rather than the standard DVD.

This movie fits the mold of a romantic comedy perfectly. Stiller does well and has some hilarious moments. Jennifer Anniston supports his purpose and does well on her own, also.

For me, the standout role was played by Phillip Seymour Hoffman. From the equivocal sex and relationship advice he gives to Stiller’s character – to his commentary on the basketball court (screaming out “Let It Rain”, “Iceman” and “Raindrops” while his gut comes flying out of his shirt, for example), he is hilarious. Hoffman also gets to speak the most memorable line of the movie when he tells Stiller’s character that he just sharted and that it is indeed time to leave the party.

I recommend this movie if you’re a fan of most Ben Stiller movies. It’s a movie that will remind you of a dozen other romantic comedies, but it is worth the viewing.

If one is a fan of Ben Siller and one enjoyed him in the films, “Zoolander”, “Meet the Parents” and “Something About Mary”, then one will enjoy this light, fun filled comedy that does not take itself too seriously. It revolves around insurance risk-assessment analyst, Reuben Feffer (Ben Siller), who marries the woman of his dreams, Lisa Kramer (Debra Messing), only to lose her on their honeymoon, when she betrays him with the very buff Claude (Hank Azaria), the scuba diving instructor with a seriously deranged French accent.

Returning home from the honeymoon, alone and forlorn, he runs into an old childhood friend of his, Polly Prince (Jennifer Aniston), who has gone from being a math geek to being a totally free spirit. They begin dating, even though they appear to be total opposites. Let the games begin! There are a lot of jokes in the film, often scatological, and sight gags. The path of true love certainly does not seem to run smoothly when one is plagued with irritable bowel syndrome and one’s girl-friend is fond of hot, spicy food.

Ben Siller is funny in a hapless, hang dog sort of way. Phillip Seymour Hoffman, as his best friend, Sandy Lyle, also adds to the humor, lowbrow though it be. Hank Azaria is very buff and over the top in the role of the sexy, scuba diving Frenchman, Claude, with the laughable accent. Jennifer Aniston is a terrific in the role of Polly, a total natural, playing it straight and always charming. The rest of the stellar supporting cast, Alec Baldwin, Debra Messing, Bryan Brown, Michelle Lee, and Bob Dishy, all contribute to the success of this comedic effort by writer-director Jerry Hamburg.

The third installment of the Harry Potter films was ready for a new director, and Alfonso Cuaron seemed a likely choice. Chris Columbus was admirable in his fidelity to the plot of the first two books, but as Harry becomes a teenager and faces a more complex life, Columbus’s candy-coated style is no longer appropriate. So it was with great anticipation that I looked forward to the “darker” style that Cuaron promised.

In some respects I was not disappointed. Cuaron’s interpretation of Harry’s world is defined by inscrutable shadows and colored in misty greens and greys, rather than red-and-gold tapestry of movies one and two. This new palette is more natural, and in keeping with that, far more of the movie takes place out of doors. Cuaron gives Hogwarts a greater sense of age as well, making a crumbling courtyard and rickety bridge over a gorge central to many scenes. These locations, as well as the huge pendulum in the entry hall and clock face that Harry sits inside at one point, are a nicely subtle way to weave in the movie’s (and book’s) theme of time and how the past can’t ever be completely undone.

Cuaron handles some scenes very well, especially brief, telling gestures or moments that provide character definition, such as the bit where Hermione grabs Ron’s hand which made it into the trailer, and another where the two of them have an awkward conversation outside the Shrieking Shack. Other highlights include Harry and his dorm-mates up late eating candy that makes them impersonate animals (touchingly shows how very teenage they are); and a moment when Sirius, trying desperately to hold Lupin back from his change to werewolf, places his hand over Lupin’s chest and says “You live in this heart!” – which is made all the more poignant because we know he can’t stop the transformation.

Some plot points have been sacrificed in order to keep the film to a manageable length. Most of the time this works, as when Harry meets with Snape and Lupin in a beautifully lit nighttime corridor, precipitating the handover of the Marauder’s Map and Lupin’s realization that Peter Pettigrew lives; or when Harry receives the Firebolt from Sirius at a different point in the movie than in the book. There were, however, two changes which seemed inexplicable to me. First, the patronus charm is made into a shield of light rather than an animal which charges down the dementors. This eliminates Harry’s discovery of his father within himself through his stag patronus (he does see a stag of light when he rescues himself at the lakeside, but when we see him from the perspective of rescuer there is no stag, and this is never explained). Similarly, even though Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs are named on the Marauder’s Map, the nicknames and their relationship to Lupin, Pettigrew, Sirius, and James Potter is never explained. It would have taken only a few more minutes to add that explosition, which would have strengthened Harry’s cinematic connections to his father tremendously.

All in all, I think it’s possible that the viewers who enjoy this film the most will be those who haven’t read the book. As someone who is very familiar with the Harry Potter book series, I kept finding myself hung up on the changes to the story (and just how much depth was lost) even as I enjoyed the beautiful cinemetography and deft handling of characters’ relationships. My hope is that whoever directs film four is able to take some of Cuaron’s artistic sensibilities and combine them with Columbus’s sense of wonder and attention to plot detail. That would truly do Harry justice.

I loved this particular movie when compared to the series as a whole, but this is not why i’m writing this review.

This review concerns the “bonus” content for people who pre-order the dvd here on amazon. The “screensaver” is not an animated screensaver of the marauders map as you might think, which actually would have been quite nice if it had been done in the style of the map in the movie. You will be instructed to download a seperate application which will take over your windows screensaver functionality. The application is not very intuitive to use and I’ve since deactivated it. The “Marauders Map Screensaver” itself is nothing more then 3 random images of indistinct parts of the in-movie Marauder’s Map with giant “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” logos that splashed everywhere. Its not very visually appealing as a screensaver and the images in opinion aren’t very well done.

Just want to make sure that other people are aware of what exactly this bonus content is, and aren’t buying the dvd here purely because of this. There is no marauders map style animation occuring here, and all that will be displayed are static images. I pre-ordered it here purely based on getting this bonus content, and I was rather disapointed with what i received.
