First off, this is still a damn good anime. The four episodes are worth the price, new or used. But the plot has slowed down as they work on the character development. Out of all the girls I seem to find Rachel the most interesting. Kate seems out of it, like she is depressed, and decides that maybe GRACE is not for her. In fact she wonders if GRACE and her really fit together. To me this seems kind of petty when you think about the rest of the problems she has. She is, after all, DEAD. Yet she seems to come back to life, as it were, in the fourth episode of the DVD when she develops an interest in a certain boy.

Rose at least seems to have family issues bothering her and Claire is having a hard time just making ends meet. Both had a lot on their plate before the first episode on the first DVD and I think they are handling things the best way they can by trying to act normal – or as normal as they can be. The point is they have skills to deal with this kind of thing.

But Rachel, from my point of view, has had the filters taken from her eyes. Her life really had no meaning and now, after she is dead, she can see it for what it was. One big party, a social get together that never ended. And a boyfriend who seems to want to dump her only after a few days of trouble. At least the guy interested in Claire kind of hangs around her even when it pisses her off.

Which is funny because Rachel is the same type of girl who would have never talked to me in school. And I would not have talked to either. Hey, she would have been WAY out of my reach. Yet by unpeeling her like a onion and showing the insides they show human being within. And force me to see the human inside her also.

Why take a point away? Not because the plot slowed down and the action slowed. It isn’t that kind of series. I took it away because they took away the musical numbers that gave it that weird twist. Not one song in the whole DVD in any of the stories. Also it seems to be heading towards a romantic story, like Beauty and the Beast, and not really a horror story. In fact there seemed to be very little in the way of horror in the DVD – only two fight scenes that I remember.

Also they changed the ending song by episode 12 and I LIKED that song. Oh well, still good enough to watch and continue watching because of all the things they are starting to reveal. The story is being unpeeled also, not just Rachel.

Although I am writing from the UK, I have recorded a fair number of the season 5 episodes from TV transmission on VHS some years ago, and in any case remember much of the series from the original broadcasts in the 70s.

Season 5 is one of the three best seasons of Hawaii Five-O (the other two are to come, including the very best ever).

I understand viewer frustration when publishers needlessly edit these releases, but apart from the omission of the season 2 episode, I have personally not been aware of any such editing.

Season 4 was released with cheaper packaging and downbeat motifs on the discs themselves, and along with other comments here, I am scared silly that the publishers may not release all 12 seasons (I have the first four on DVD now and would buy the other 8 at the drop of a hat if given the chance). However the content and transfer is first rate at least for teh first 4 seasons.

Reasons why Hawaii Five-O is -great- on DVD:

Buy,Download, Or Stream Hawaii Five-O – The Fifth Season! Click Here

- The wonderful locations really come across like they never did on VHS or original broadcast – e.g. the background sounds of the waves breaking on the beach or the wind in the trees, or the bright vivid colours on a sun-soaked clear day. Some episodes make me feel a little bit like I’m on holiday/vacation.

- In today’s world of moral uncertainty, Jack Lord is a breath of fresh air with his clear values, integrity, and respect for the law. You may not agree with how he handles every situation – but he makes you think.

- As we advance through the seasons, the plots get quite sufficiently clever to make it worth watching for these alone.

- Good plots + strong characters + wonderful locations = a heady mix.

- The series is also respectful of cultures, and deals with many colourful issues.

So my suggestion is that you can’t make a mistake by buying this one (S5), and since there is so much great material yet to come, let’s keep the sales up, so we might have a chance at getting all 12 seasons?

. . . plus – when can we have this one in the UK please? . . the seasons are being released sooo slowly!

For all of the people who were flipping out ahead of the release of Hawaii Five-O season 5 based on what CBS did to The Fugitive – relax! I’ve watched most of my new season 5 episodes (thank God for DVD releases!) and all the original music seems to be intact.

Picture quality is great, as in each of the previous 4 seasons, and the show itself is better than ever – this is my favorite season so far. Great writing, interesting stories, top-notch acting from pretty much everyone, including most of the guest stars, and of course the beautiful scenery, funky ’70’s clothes, and the awesome, unflappable Steve McGarrett, which all combine to make this one of the most iconic cop shows in TV history.

I just hope CBS releases ALL 12 seasons! They’ve done a great job so far.

5 stars – book ‘em, Danno!

One of the great things about movies is that every once in awhile the unexpected happens, something comes along that you know immediately is just a bit different and special somehow. Usually it’s the film itself, but on occasion– and this is one of them– a character will emerge who is not just a character in a movie, but IS the movie. Here, it’s the title character of “Crocodile Dundee,” directed by Peter Faiman, and starring Paul Hogan as the inimitable Mick Dundee, a rather unique individual hailing from the small hamlet of Walkabout Creek, Australia. Mick hit the big screen in 1986, and from the first moment he appeared, right up through the end of the second sequel, it’s been a “G’day” for audiences around the world.

In Australia on assignment for her New York newspaper, journalist Sue Charlton (Linda Kozlowski) runs across a story she just has to pursue. It’s about a legendary “local” from one of the small towns on the cusp of the bush, a crocodile hunter who, the story goes, had his leg bitten off by a croc, then managed to survive by crawling, alone, for days on end across the outback. So it’s off to the town of Walkabout Creek in search of this larger-than-life character, who it turns out is quite a “character” to say the least. He is, in fact, one of a kind.

After a memorable meeting in the town’s only pub (one of about four buildings in the whole place), Michael J. “Mick” Dundee agrees to take her on a tour retracing his steps and reconstructing the famous event where it actually took place. He promises a hard journey through some rugged terrain– no place, in fact, for a “Sheila”– but, like any good reporter, she’s ready for anything; or so she thinks. And it’s the beginning of an adventure she, as well as the audience, will never forget.

Hogan concocted the story and created the character, then wrote the screenplay along with John Cornell and Ken Shadie, after which he turned it over to director Faiman, who did a worthy, if not exceptional, job of translating Hogan’s vision to the screen. Faiman, however, is destined to be the forgotten man with regards to this project, inasmuch as he was not only necessarily overshadowed by writer/star Hogan, but he presented the film in a fairly straightforward manner, without anything particularly noteworthy that “he” did that would put his “signature” on it. Add to that the fact that this was the first of only two films Faiman ever directed (his second was the lackluster “Dutch” in 1991); simply not enough to reference him, nothing added to his resume afterwards to make you take notice and say, “Oh, yes, he directed `Dundee,’ too.” Still, filmmaking is inherently a collaborative medium, and as they say, a film does not “direct” itself; so credit must be given where it is due, and considering how good this film is, and how well it did at the box office, it points up that whatever Faiman did, he did right. And he deserves to be acknowledged for it.

It’s no secret, of course, what really makes this film work. Aside from the engaging story with it’s romantic notions of adventure, from beginning to end it has the four “Big Cs” going for it: Character, Charisma, Chemistry and Charm. Let’s face it, Paul Hogan is “The Man” as Mick Dundee; he’s the guy other guys admire and want to be (whether or not they’ll admit to it), and he has the kind of natural good looks, charisma and charm that is irresistible to the ladies (whether or not they’ll admit to it). And the chemistry between Hogan and Kozlowski is irrefutable; it’s the kind that makes you want to put another shrimp on the barbie. Besides all of which there is an innate honesty about Hogan’s Mick that shines through like a 1st order Fresnel light in a London fog. He’s laid-back and grounded, with a refreshingly logical outlook on life– this guy’s never going to need a pill for hypertension– and what adds even more to his appeal is that there’s a touch of larceny in his make-up, hiding just beneath that twinkle in his eye and his obvious integrity. You also know instinctively that this is the guy you want in your corner when the chips are down. All of this and more is what Paul Hogan captures in his performance; this is the Mick “Crocodile” Dundee he brings to the screen.

In her motion picture debut, the lovely Linda Kozlowski brings some sizzle to the screen and proves to be the perfect counterpoint to co-star Hogan. Something of an “Ibsenesque” role model, she demonstrates that a woman can be strong and ultra feminine, capable yet vulnerable, and all at the same time. It makes her portrayal of Sue Charlton convincing, well rounded and real; much more than just a cardboard cutout kind of a character that could have been used as nothing more than a vehicle to move the story along. Instead, though this is without question Mick Dundee’s story, she makes it her story, too, and it gives the film an added perspective and considerably more depth than what is usually found in light comedy, which is essentially what this film is. And there’s a look in her eye and something in the way she smiles at Mick that has an absolute ring of truth to it. You could say, in fact, that Hogan and Kozlowski are the Bogie and Bacall of the outback.

Another invaluable asset to the film is the performance of the likable John Meillon as Mick’s friend, Walter Reilly. The part is a true character actor’s character, and Meillon does it beautifully. The supporting cast includes Mark Blum (Richard), Michael Lombard (Sam), Steve Rackman (Donk) and Reginald VelJohnson (Gus). A memorable film filled with unforgettable characters, “Crocodile Dundee” will take you to the top o’the world… “down under.”

‘Crocodile Dundee’ is a highly entertaining comedy romance released in ‘86 that implanted such delightful Aussie terms as; “G’day” and “out for a walkabout” into Amercian mainstream consciousness.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Crocodile Dundee! Click Here

Paul Hogan is absolutely perfect as the man from down under, Michael J. ‘Crocodile’ Dundee who is pursued by an American reporter (Linda Kozlowski) in search of a good newspaper story about the elusive crocodile hunter roaming the Australian Outback. When their brief but intense encounter blossoms into romance she invites Mic to return to New York with her and see the sights. Can a naive Aussie fresh from the bush cope with the perils that accompany life in the Big Apple? You Bet!!

Great family fun with good performances by Hogan and Kozlowski as well as John Meillon as Mic’s Outback partner, Walter and a brief but memorable cameo by David Gulpilil.

There are movies that haunt you and others that keep you guessing; there are horror flicks and daring mind-benders; there are suspense ridden narratives and atypical treaures: Hard candy is all of the above. The terrible intolerable need to continue watching absorbs and terrifies while you seem disturbed by a need to find a side to root for. The pedophile photographer who may have committed a homicide or the teenager who seems bent on revenge with such hatred you feel for her psychological statae of mind and her emotional integrity while admiring the psychological battle of wits that throws every trick in the book and seemingly confiscates the essence of every psychotic malady the rational rituals of desire have equipped human nature with. Ellen Page is too good to be true and so belligerent in her sympathetic role that you can’t stand her. She does what no one at her age has ever been able to do, namely reconcile the taboo of social mores with a nefarious bristling candor that thwarts the desire to continue to watch. She is placed aface Patrick Wilson who performs the role of a pedophile with impenetrable guile and belated predatory pride. He runs the gamut of psycho games and betrays psychobabble while his counterpart frustrates his strategic acumen by outsmarting him to such an extent you wonder as he does: Who is this girl? It gets terrifyiing and tense in a swell of emotional callousness that dumbs the pity elusively ambling in a dialogue that is always disquieted by minds that forage a loot in every chance digression. It is shot with bestirring incision and lavish in its climactic rush. I do not think a movie could be shot with more intensity. Here we see the madness of psychology at its tenderest and it sickens but always concentrates on a suspenseful emotional heap that litters the intelligence of the two parties. Poker face after poker face we experience the insistence of insanity at its most gripping hold, but not the newspaper brand, here we have a mixture of hatred and desire controlled and fashioned by a shooting that ends with the incredible after the impossibly disgusting has been shaved a few times. This movie is an absolutely astonding psychological maze and a social commentary that undoes the sutures of a world where reason is used to abuse and torture, and where justice is a questionable prospect of soulless proportions. Wow.

It’s safe to say that before the release of the film I was basically foaming at the mouth in anticipation. I don’t know what it was that drew me so strongly to it, but there was something about it that just wet my appetite for great cinema.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Hard Candy! Click Here

So, the week came when it was to be released, and Friday rolled around. I went to see it – and left utterly disappointed. I don’t know what I expected from the film, from all the press I read I expected simple torture then an end to the film, but what I got, I later realized, was so much more.

The story, although topical to some degree, is at first glance a story of one person wanting to teach another a lesson about the “naughty” things they do, ALA Seven and Saw. But as the film unfolds the true faces are shown, and they’re ugly. Ellen Page and Patrick Wilson turn in flawless performances, as they’re the only main actors in the film, Sandra Oh plays a small, yet somewhat vital role, and then there’s that one guy at the cafe.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Hard Candy! Click Here

The reason I detested this movie was for one simple reason – manipulation. NEVER in my life have I seen a film where my beliefs and feelings concerning the characters has shifted so furiously between one and the other. You sincerely believe that Jeff is an innocent man and that Haley is simply a sociopath. As the story unfolds, if you see the film in the same light as I did, by the end you’ll be completely worn out, and left with a feeling of bleakness.

With most recent horror films focusing mainly on the gore aspect, and very little story, albeit one as complex as this, it was incredibly refreshing to see a horror/suspense film that was something that could just possibly top Hitchcock in his finest hour.

A true masterpiece.

This DVD is a mishmash. A low-rent theatrical short here, a trip through a carnival haunted house there, some still shots of old spookshow posters in between. In fact, “Monsters Crash the Pajama Party” is nearly impossible to describe. It’s not a feature film, though there is a feature (”Tormented”) included somewhere on the disc. Nor is it primarily about the title segment, a short monster/comedy flick starring a bunch of college kids and a mad scientist. Instead, it’s almost as if the entire DVD is made up of extras. But what a great collection of extras it is! For one low price, you get monsters, happenin’ 60s co-eds, horrible narration, REALLY bad acting, a bit of 3-D, a guy in a bargain-basement gorilla outfit and a whole lot more! Watching this disc feels like channel surfing in a world in which the Cramps run all the TV stations. It’s like watching snippets of movies made by people who…well…wish they could make better movies. The result? It’s absolutely, over-the-top brilliant; a patchwork of lowbrow cinema that will leave you wondering, “Where the heck did this stuff ever play??”

Buy,Download, Or Stream Monsters Crash the Pajama Party! Click Here

My only complaint about this disc (and I’m docking it a whole star for this) is that it’s REALLY hard to navigate! The viewer is pretty much left to just stumble onto various scenes by trial and error. It’s an amazing collection of clips and snippets overall, but this thing should have come with a map.

DVDs with a lot of extras are great. But when one is almost entirely extras, it falls flat. So I feel the need to warn mal-informed b-movie fans as to what they are truly getting on this disc.

Now make no mistake, I like obscure sci-fi/horror as much as the next geek (I rate The Brain From Planet Arous 4 stars, for Pete’s Sake), but that’s not really what this dvd is about. While it may be fun once in a while for parties, avoid it if you are considering it on its own merits. To enjoy this disc, one must really really be on the lookout for regional rarities. If you like looking at other people’s home movies, that is a head start; and don’t think I am exaggerating because some home movies are in fact included on this disc. (Manos is an A-Picture epic compared to some of this stuff.)

First, the navigation of the dvd was admittedly great: sort of like a spectral treasure hunt. Some items are highlighted but not explained in text, while others are not shown at all, so you really have to search. Some people may find it annoying. I found it rather charming. With patience, you’ll locate them all.

BTW, this dvd is not really for kids, although there is not anything too objectionable. But most would probably not have the patience to sit through this. Much of the disc achieves a certain amount of nostalgic spookiness (as opposed to being frightening) by being the most hypnotically stupid things these eyes have ever seen.

A collection of trailers from midnight spook shows is fun for 15 minutes, but continues on for another 30, becoming very repetitive and dull and repetitive and dull and repetitive. Buffs will enjoy playing Spot the Art, as these stage shows often ripped off poster images from movies of the time, such as Beverly Garland screaming in Not Of This Earth. Some are amusing or cool, but they just go on forever. I didn’t even watch the still gallery of poster art; there were 300 items!

The 3-D Asylum of the Insane is a genuinely odd, headache-inducing affair even with the free glasses. At first it consists of happy suburban families throwing footballs at the camera. Then a yo-yo expert comes on. Finally, three costumed weirdos make stabbing motions at the lens for approximately 13 hours (actually it only seemed that long). This was disturbing in a Flying Monkey sort of way.

The title feature is terribly dumb but watchable hokum about portly and rather old sorority sisters spending the night in a creepy house. Then there is a short where a guy turns into a werewolf as he returns with snacks to his car at the Drive-In Theater: pretty lame, uncomfortably idiotic. Another is a ride through a carnival spook house: why, I must ask? Another is an educational short about a boy who is frightened, why that is fine and how he can combat his fears: it will likely have you wishing for Joel and the ‘Bots. Another follows a guy as he is menaced by grotesque women in gowns: like a low-rent Carnival of Souls and nowhere near as good.

There are other extras, too, which you can read about for yourself. I only mean to give my take on things without the bombastic ad-speak, and I thought most of the extras were blah. I am not criticizing the effort put out by the makers of this disc, only the flawed thinking behind it. To give you an idea, one of the “hidden gems” in the navigation is footage of a skull that turns to the camera and says “Stay cool,” and that’s it. Ho-hum.

I will say that some of the silent short movies included are not bad; one about a mummy and one in an operating room are of particular artistic merit. I wish I knew exactly what they were. But they are the exceptions and definitely not the rule.

The Bert I. Gordon film Tormented is the most enjoyable thing on the disc, but it seems like sort of a last-minute add-on, rather than one of the main attractions. A matter of perspective and (poor) taste, perhaps. If you grew up with these spook shows, maybe you’ll feel differently. But I feel that they easily could have chopped out some of the “junk” and added another full-length feature. The disc just needed less salad and more meat.

In summation: you get a lot, but what you get is not too good. Like a cheap all-you can-eat buffet where the food has been out under the heat lamps too long.

P.S. IMHO this all just goes to show how good William Castle really was at his showman shtick.

If you are reading this you probably already know that Willie is one of the most creative, powerful, and diverse performers of all time. In this review, I’m not going to rate the albums, just offer some insights into the CD’s and DVD’s that I have purchased – and I’m glad I’ve purchased them all.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Willie Nelson – My Life! Click Here

“The Essential Willie Nelson” is essential. Be that as it may, Willie’s individual CD’s are so strong and the songs are so interrelated, often in a story or a tight thematic format, that they almost make the “essential” Willie Nelson unessential – but it is such a great collection of songs, that you can’t get as easily any other way. Definitely worth the buy.

“The Red Headed Stranger” is one of the greatest albums of all time. It is pure genius. If you get the 70th birthday edition, you get a remastered track and extra songs. There are no less than six “A” level songs on this CD, nothing short of amazing. Plus, you get fourteen minutes of great story telling. As a story teller, Willie is only rivaled by Native American artist Robert Mirabal (”Indians Indians”, “Taos Tales”, “Music From A Painted Cave”, “Mirabal”, etc.).

Buy,Download, Or Stream Willie Nelson – My Life! Click Here

“Willie and Family Live”, done around 1975, is a great live album. It has lots of energy. A highlight for me was Willie Nelson, Emmy Lou Harris, and Johnny Paycheck singing “Amazing Grace” together. It also contains the fourteen minute story of the Red Headed Stranger, including “Blue Eyes Crying In the Rain”. This live performance of Willie’s first #1 hit is the best I have heard on any album. There is a little extra “oomph” on every song in the CD. Again, make sure you get the 70th birthday edition, it has extra goodies.

If you like the early super hits that Willie wrote for everyone else, like “Crazy”, “Night Life”, and “Funny How Time Slips Away”, then you need to also get the “Milk Cow Blues” CD. Willie performs these and more Blues standards, usually in a duet format, with outstanding artists such as B.B. King – Rolling Stone Magazine’s choice as the 3rd greatest guitarist of all time. Hearing BB and Willie strum and sing together on “Night Life” and “The Thrill is Gone” is indeed a thrill. Willie performs this album with a first class Blues band and it is a first class Blues album.

Willie’s latest album, “It Will Always Be” is once again a solid piece of work. Duets with Norah Jones and Lucinda Williams help make it special, but the best part of this album is the haunting duet of Willie and Paula Nelson on the song “It Will Always Be”. This is a song that hits you in the gut, and it rivals Bruce Springstein’s “Streets of Philadelphia” in terms of its raw emotion. A number of people, including me, cried the first time they heard it: “I’m tied of this and I’m running out of time; feels like dyin’, feels like cryin’; and I’m running out of time.” Say it ain’t so, Willie!! A second good song was written by another member of the Nelson clan. The title song is very beautiful. The tribute to the land Willie loves, “Texas”, is too short but very meaningful. If this was Willie’s last CD, he went out as “The Midnight Rider”, a great song for the leader of the outlaw movement: “They ain’t gonna catch me, I ain’t go let `em catch the Midnight Rider.”

“Spirit” and “Teatro” are brother/sister CDs. Both have a strong thematic core, although they are not stories. “Spirit” is one of those rare CD’s when every note seems important. For most, you’ll listen to it less than the other CD’s, but love it equally as much. For a few, you’ll play it by the hours. It is essentially a story of coping with lost love, redefining your relationship with yourself and with God, and finding love again. The music and the whole CD are moderately paced, with a strong, steady spiritual tone to it. It has a light Latin sound, essential to Willie’s roots. Pictures of Willie on this album look like he came from an ancient Holy Land.

“Teatro” is the mirror of “Spirit”. Again, it is a story of coping with lost love, but the story goes south, ending in murder and psychological ruin. Teatro means “theater” in Spanish and this is good to keep in mind in listening to the CD. It is just a play folks! The CD is very hard-hitting, because Willie’s music is very hard-hitting and very close to the heart. The music tends to have a lively beat, with strong Latin overtones. Its haunting nature is reinforced by Emmy Lou Harris, who accompanies Willie on most of the songs. The back picture on the back of the CD case is one of the best pictures of Willie ever taken.

The “My Life” DVD is well worth the buy. The story ends before the 90’s, but there is a brief update. I knew about Willie and Farm Aid, but I didn’t know about the scope of his philanthropy and the diversity of populations targeted in his giving until this DVD. I was also amazed to learn that he paid his $16 million IRS debt off in one year, selling $17 million worth of songs as info-mercials to radio stations. That’s a lot of love, translated into a lot of power.

A number of people criticize the “Live In Amsterdam” DVD and some of the criticisms are merited. But hey, the DVD has a large collection of great songs. Some criticisms are not fair. You perform differently and 70 than you do at 40, it is a biological rule. Willie’s shows have always moved quickly from one song to the other, so the pace of the concert is nothing new. The love from the audience is shown at the end when Willie is signing autograph after autograph. The bottom line is this, if you like Willie, if you would like to watch him live occasionally instead of just hearing him through the box, and if you want those images of him at 70, then you should buy this DVD. You’ll find it worthwhile.

In the final analysis, the raw power of Willie’s work, formed by singing in the cotton fields with Black and Mexican laborers, and his keen insight into what people really want in music, formed not through record company analysis but through live performances on the ground, make Willie Nelson one of the most creative, powerful, and loved performers of all time.

From the back:

Here’s Willie Nelson’s official, authorized video biography! “Willie Nelson: My Life” is the close-up portrait of America’s favorite singer/songwriter, from the days he sold one of his early hits, Family Bible, for $50 to buy milk for his children through his long struggle to superstardom. Included are frank and sometimes humorous interviews with Willie and his friends Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Ray Charles, Emmylou Harris, Sydney Pollack, Gary Busey, Mel Tillis, Ray Price, Jerry Jeff Walker and others.

The soundtrack features vintage live performances of over 20 of Willie’s biggest hits, including On the Road Again, Stardust, Whiskey River, Crazy, Nitelife, Funny How Time Slips Away, Red Headed Stranger, Shotgun Willie and Seven Spanish Angels (with Ray Charles).

“Everything in this video, both the good and the bad in my life, is the absolute truth.” – Willie Nelson

I have seen a lot of Dragonball, Dragonball Z, and now I have seen everything released (legally) of Dragonball GT. All three series have changed (Dragonball has Roshi being a pervert, Z has more blood, etc. etc.), but GT doesn’t really seem to be a big change from the other two. There aren’t really many perverted jokes (if any), and the violence isn’t worth putting the 13+ sticker on it.

What is this series worth, then? I think the plot as a whole is a little more mature than the other series have been, not just people running around and taking seven episodes to charge a spirit bomb. Baby is a worthy enemy, even though he is defeated the same as all of the other enemies in the past. The moustache episode is great, for those who know what I’m talking about. Basically, when the series is good, it’s great; and when it sucks, it sucks.

Back to things I have issues with about the series. The DVDs are overpriced for how many episodes are on a single DVD, and the episode titles and numbers are not listed on the front or back of the DVD cover, so if you didn’t know what you were doing, you wouldn’t know what you were getting. Perfect example would be myself: I have browsed through stores for the past year or so, and spotted DBGT DVDs, and havn’t bought any. Over the past couple of months, I decided to get one to start with. I was in the store and didn’t do my online research, so I didn’t know exactly what I was getting (episode wise). I made a prayer and bought the DVD (Annihalation), and came home to realize it had episodes 20-22. Attempting to jump into the episodes didn’t work, so I decided that in order to understand, a couple other DVDs would be needed. Personally, I didn’t feel the Affliction DVD was necessary and did a poor compilation of episodes 1-16 (Japanese) into episode 1 (English). It was almost a waste of time to see Goku battle Rilldo. Once Baby is brought into the series is when it is worth buying (Baby comes into play in episode 7). Rilldo and Dr. Myuu should have all been crammed onto one DVD, so fans wouldn’t have to suffer through it, or maybe just catch them on tv or rent them. All of this confusion was overwhelming, so I broke down and bought the other 7 DVDs, ranging in price. ($14.97 Salvation and Annihalation at Walmart…thank you Walmart, $19.97 for Ramifications and Preparation at some other department store, and $24.95 for Affliction, Incubation, Creation and Proliferation in the mall because no other store carried them.) As you can see, this was a costy affair, and also throwing a lot of money around. (Hell, I may just sell them to someplace for at least some of the money back.) It could all be put on 3 discs for at most $60 and I would have been much happier.

Also a big factor: Where is the gore??!! Five year old children could watch this and think it as the same stuff they show on Cartoon Network. My first DVD didn’t have the 13+ sticker on it, and after one episode, I immediately thought it to be edited. I guess the only parts that would be worht editing would be nudity, but kids think asses are funny! They always show asses in cartoons, so why would it be edit-worthy in this series? It’s not, to tell you the truth. There is other anime that doesn’t even have the sticker that actually should (i.e. Eva…bless you Evangelion). When you go in buying these things, you think you are going to get some great unedited stuff here. That’s what I find annoying about the whole affair.

So, after all my rambling, to sum up…
Baby, in itself, is a great saga. Gen. Rilldo and Dr. Myuu, however, were a waste of time and money. (Rilldo was uncannily similar to Cell.) The DVDs don’t show the episodes on it, and they are severely overpriced. Dragonball GT also follows the fighing “formula” as its predecessors:
Goku meets enemy + Goku punches enemy rashly and enemy lets it go by + enemy takes on a new form and beats the crap out of Goku + Kais and others watch and go “OH MY GOD, WILL GOKU LIVE?” + Goku goes to another Super Saiyan form + Enemy is surprised + the enemy and Goku are evenly matched and fight for a while = eventually Goku wins and there is a pointless episode or two following the defeat of the enemy.
That’s the formula. Repetitive, yet addicting.

Suggestion: Watch them on tv, rent them, or borrow them and watch the series. See which episodes you like, do your research, and buy the DVDs with the episodes you liked most on them (from a Used place hopefully). You will find more money in your pocket, and a bigger smile on your face knowing you saved a lot of money. OR, get hooked on another anime series…try Tenchi Universe, Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion, Trigun or Hellsing.

In this volume, Goku (super saiyan4) will get crushed by baby but then, luckilly Old Kai was able too cook up a plan to get Trunks, Goten, and Gohan from Baby’s controll, then goku will cut Baby’s tail off, then baby will leap from Vegeta’s body and escapes from a nearby space ship, later Goku will follow baby into outer-space and when baby crosses the suns path, Goku will use the Kamekameha technique and send baby crashing into the sun!!!!!!!!!!!

Like most baby boomers, I’ve watched this film dozens of times in the past on broadcast TV, then VHS tape, then LaserDisc … but I had never actually SEEN “The Wizard of Oz” until this newly restored DVD came out. It’s an amazing transfer. The sepia-tone Kansas sequences are startlingly sharp and clear, and the Technicolored world “Over the Rainbow” is truly dazzling. I found myself fascinated by details I had never noticed before: the glittering corn stalks in the Scarecrow’s field; the mirror-like floors of the Emerald City; the polished buttons on the guardsmen’s uniforms. Incredibly, even the individual grains of red sand in the Witch’s hourglass stood out and glistened! All these minor-but-sumptuous visual details served to heighten the magical spell that the film has always woven, enhancing the performances, the story, and the music.

The DVD extras are a mind-boggling embarrassment of riches. The “Making Of” documentary hosted by the incomparable Angela Lansbury is worth the price of the DVD alone, but there’s so much more: an international poster gallery, interviews with cast members, deleted scenes, production stills, radio clips, etc, etc. There’s enough material to keep even the most casual viewer fascinated for hours, and a true Oz buff will be occupied for days!

If you only bought a DVD player to watch this one disc, it would well be worth the expense. Treat yourself, and fall in love with this classic film again … for the first time.

I was just critized for foisting off the following review of the 3-disk DVD set as a review of the new Blu-ray. I didn’t; Amazon did. As anyone who’s been here for a while will notice, Amazon throws all DVD reviews into the same bucket, regardless of the edition. So don’t blame me.

I just got the Blu-ray, and will have some comments on it at the end.

There’s no need to discuss “The Wizard of Oz” itself, a classic among classics (though I’ll have something to say about its “philosophy” later on). You probably want to know whether the UltraResolution transfer justifies the purchase.

It does. Oh, yes it does.

“The Wizard of Oz” has always looked good, one of the better Technicolor films. Unlike “Gone With the Wind”, which was generally dark and desaturated, and which UltraResolution greatly improved, I didn’t expect much enhancement for “Oz”.

Was I ever wrong. I stared with my jaw hanging open. “Oz” is the best UltraResolution transfer by far — and the others were not exactly chopped liver.

The improvement in detail and sharpness is startling, especially as the original prints did not seem obviously lacking in either. Even more amazing is the expansion of the tonal scale. Dark scenes (particularly those in the forest and outside the “witches” castle) are now filled with rich detail. Have you ever noticed how beautiful the Winkies’ red, white, and gray uniforms are? I hadn’t — until now.

These enhancements combine produce the biggest improvement of all — a major revelation of _texture_. The “feltiness” of many costumes is obvious. The burlap of the Scarecrow’s face is now plainly visible, particularly in the close-up where he misstates the Pythagorean Theorem. And the Lion’s costume is a thick pile of fur you want to reach out and stroke. You can see every last strand of hair.

I’m exaggerating only slightly when I say the improvements of this UltraResolution transfer are not much less than those from cleaning the Sistine Chapel’s frescos. It’s as if layers of murk and grime — that you never even knew were there! — have been stripped away. Until you view it, you cannot imagine what this film (that is, the original camera negatives) _really_ looks like. It’s a shame the people who created “Oz” never got to see it this way.

The image quality is so high that I often felt as if I were looking through a window at live performers. (Well, almost.) No matter what versions you already have, you won’t be disappointed with this one. I watched it twice in two days, and I might even view it a third time tonight.

My only quibble is that several matte paintings do not blend properly, because the hues at the join lines do not match those of the scene. This could have been fixed; I suspect it seemed too much work for a small improvement. (A friend suggested that these sorts of things are left in because videophiles enjoy finding them.)

As to the differences between the two- and three-disk sets… The latter includes a packet of original programs and promotional material of the sort we haven’t seen in 40 years ago. (Remember the 50-cent deluxe programs for road-show films?) There’s also a set of 10 reproductions of Kodachrome publicity photographs. For this viewer, these extras alone justify the higher price.

The third disk will be of most interest to lovers of all things Oz. It includes a handsomely produced biography of L. Frank Baum (interesting enough that you might want to watch it more than once), plus all the silent Oz films and a Technicolor Oz cartoon. The existence of these is well-known to anyone familiar with the history of Oz productions, but they’ve never appeared (as far as I know) in any home-video format.

The films are problematic. The two from Baum’s production company are the best — they have style, charm, and imagination. The others are cheesy ripoffs that bear little relation to the original book. The Larry Semon — a once wildly-popular but now virtually forgotten cartoonist and comic * — version is especially obnoxious, as it is little more than a vehicle for Semon’s brand of physical comedy. The Baum estate is at least partly to blame — _any_ movie version must have seemed more attractive than none, especially as the technology to make a convincing version of “Oz” would not exist for another 15 years.

The film’s opening titles praise the book’s “kindly philosophy”, which seems to be either “You already have everything you need to be happy”, or “The answer to your problems lies within yourself”. These are not so much “kindly” as reflections of the hard-nosed “All your problems are your own fault” and “If you’re not a success, it’s because you’re lazy” homilies that grew out of the great opportunity for personal development and material success this country offered.

I believe L. Frank Baum had something a bit different in mind. “The Wizard of Oz” is a fairy tale in which magic has no bearing on the issues at the center of the story. I believe Baum wanted to discourage children from fantasizing that magic could be a solution to one’s problems.

So… he has the four principals make a grueling journey to the Emerald City, then find the wizard is a humbug. (What a shame the blander “fake”, “fraud”, or “phony” have replaced that delightful word.) He posesses no magic to supply wit, love, or grit, which the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and Cowardly Lion have demonstrated they already have.

Baum’s “moral” is simple — Love, wisdom, and courage are what we need to get through life. No one can _give_ them to us, because we _already_ possess them, and all we need to do is express them.

“Is that right?”

“That’s all it is.”

Now… the question you’ve been waiting for the answer to… Is the Blu-ray set worth the price?

I viewed the Blu-ray on a Pioneer 60″ Pro Kuro, fed from a Sony BDP-S550. I also watched the DVD on the Pioneer (fed from the same Blu-ray player), and on a 36″ Sony 400-series WEGA “improved definition” TV (fed from a Sony DVP-S7000).

The DVD remains a terrific DVD, and looks terrific on a high-quality 480i monitor. (See the preceding review.) It was, and still is, a demo-quality DVD.

When played on the BD player, and upconverted to 1080p, the DVD’s image on the Kuro is pretty darn good — the sharpness and detail are at least “acceptable”. But when you play the Blu-ray disk, the image goes from “acceptable” to almost-startling. Two examples… Note the enhanced detail and texture in the weather-beaten wood above the WWE’s lifeless legs. And in the crowd scenes, you can see (just about) every Munchkin face. There is virtually no smearing of detail.

So… should you rush right out in a buying frenzy and get the BD edition? It depends.

The DVD is good enough for an excellent picture on a high-quality SD monitor. But even upconverted, it isn’t good enough for a _large_ HD display. If you have, say, a 40″ display; your BD player has a good upconverter (not all do); and you don’t sit “on top of” the screen (as I do); you might see little difference between the DVD and the Blu-ray.

But if you’re a video fuss-budget (as I am) and sit closer than the “experts” recommend (why _shouldn’t_ you?), you will almost certainly prefer the Blu-ray. It’s your call.

A few remarks on the extras… The wristwatch, as the kid in the Ally bank commercial says, is a piece of junk. The design shows no particular style, wit, or imagination. And as others have said, “The Dreamer of OZ” is a wretched transfer, very badly unpconverted to 1080. It is not of acceptable quality, and should have been put on the DVD disk.

I will come back later (I hope) with some more comments on the sound and the other extras. Forcing yourself to repeatedly watch large chunks of a movie, regardless of its quality, is an ennervating experience.

They claim that warp engines are disrupting their space and it’s threatened to destroy everything.

12) The Pegasus – The Enterprise heads for an asteroid belt between Romulan and Federation space, with Admiral Pressman. It becomes clear that Pressman and Riker have some old business issues that need to be addressed.

13) Homeward – Dr. Nikolai Rozhenko, Worf’s human foster brother, sends a distress call from his hidden observation post on Boral II. Worf beams down, disguised as a Boralan, and discover that Nikolai has also been masquerading as a native and providing them technology from his observation post.

15) Lower Decks – A promotion is nearing for one of a group of four friends who are junior officers aboard the Enterprise. The Enterprise undertakes a top secret mission, the true purpose of which is unknown to the four friends – though each of them has a piece of the puzzle, and a part to play, in the “exercise”.

16) Thine Own Self – Troi returns from her Star Fleet Academy class reunion to find Dr. Crusher in charge of the bridge, and she begins thinking about her own position in the ship’s chain of command. Data is on a shuttle mission to retrieve radioactive material.

18) Eye of the Beholder – A young officer assigned to the Enterprise commits suicide by leaping into the ship’s warp core.

19) Genesis – Testing Worf’s new photon torpedo guidance system sends a hazardous torpedo off course into deep space, which Picard and Data set off to recover. When they return from their mission, they find that every inhabitant of the ship has somehow mutated into more primitive life form

20) Journey’s End – Wesley Crusher, on a sabbatical from Starfleet Academy, has returned to the Enterprise.

21) Firstborn – Alexander nears the age where he must decide whether or not to become a warrior; Worf grows worried that the boy will choose to discard his Klingon heritage ways.

22) Bloodlines – Picard receives a threat from his old Ferengi adversary DaiMon Bok, who still blames Picard for the death of his son.

23) Emergence – Picard and Data are rehearsing a scene from “The Tempest” in the holodeck, when they are nearly run over by the Orient Express.

24) Preemptive Strike – A reception for recent Starfleet Advanced Tactical Training graduate Ro Laren is cut short when the Enterprise responds to a Cardassian ship’s distress call. Ro has to face her loyalty to Star Fleet vs. her hatred for the Cardassian.

25/26) All Good Things (part 1&2) – In the past, the EXACT moment in which life is “started” a chemical event fails to happen. The human race does not come into existence.

The seventh season of TNG was a mixed bag; the show’s budget had been reduced and many on the writing staff moved over to the new hot property DS9 (in fact The Storyteller episode of DS9 was originally written for TNG). Nevertheless, there were a number of stand out episodes during the seventh season.

I’ve seen many fans complain about Masks. It’s an intriguing and well written episode that allows Brent Spiner shine. It’s a little unclear at the resolution what the artifact was attempting to do by transforming the Enterprise into a dead civilization but it still manages to work despite it’s shortcomings.

Although Genesis seems to rush to its conclusion (it could easily have been stretched to a two part episode), Gates McFadden’s sharp direction creates an errie mood. It’s one of the few episodes that recall Cat’s Paw from the original series. It’s definitely a Halloween type of episode and is filled with interesting make up designs. It’s also Reg Barclay’s swansong on the series. A pity he wasn’t used more during TNG films (although his brief appearance in First Contact was welcome).

Gambit parts 1 & 2 don’t quite live up to the potential of some of the previous two-parters. It’s a fun but awkward mix of swashbuckling space opera and Trek themes.

All Good Things brings the series to an artful and powerful conclusion. Well written and directed, AGT is what the first TNG film should have been. Patrick Stewart gives a powerful performance as Picard from the time he took command of the Enterprise to his retirement tending grapes in the family vineyard. The effects work is top notch and we get one last glimpse of Q in TNG. The ending suggested that there was (however loose)a 7 year story arc all along. There is a very clever hint during season 6 in a scene between Picard and Q (True Q)as to how the series would be resolved the following year.

While not the best season (season 6 following by 4, 5 & 3 wins that title), season 7 demonstrated that despite fatigue there was still considerable life in TNG. Contrary to other reviews here, season 7 isn’t the weakest season (that dubious honor still falls to season 1 closely followed by the improved season 2).

The picture quality is exceptional and the 5.1 remixed sound has details missing from the previous version on video. The extras are very good and show a huge improvement over the season 1 featurettes. The packaging like all the rest of the series is very good although, again, a brief synposis with credits of each episode for the booklet would have been nice.

With all the comments from the cast in the featurettes and the fact that they were together making Nemesis when this was put together, I’m surprised that Paramount doesn’t have any episodes with cast/director/writer/producer commentaries. It would have been particularly useful for the final two part episode. Maybe Paramount will get this part right with the DS9 release on DVD.

If you are considering the fourth season of King of the Hill for your DVD collection you are probably already a fan of the show. The fourth season has some of my favorite moments from KOTH. Cotton’s horror as he finds out that his newborn son is leaking milk, Connie having her period while staying with the Hills, Hank’s thanksgiving turkey being destroyed by a bomb squaud at the airport, Peggy’s feet being featured on a foot fetish website, Bobby seeing his female cousin naked for the first time, and the whodunnit murder of a very minor character voiced by Reese Witherspoon. These episodes are great without question but what is up with the special features department? The first two seasons had it all, comentaries, animatics, deleted scences, easter eggs, the whole shebang. But when I purchased the third season it was as if they put the release together the night before it came out. There were absolutley no special features, nada, zilch, zip. The discs were the double sided kind, and the artwork on the packaging sucked. It took only a few months between the first and second releases and we got two awesome sets, but it took another year before the third season was released and we got stiffed big time. But now it is time for season four to be released and I’m getting worried that it will be a repeat of the rush-job we got for season three. I already know it is going to be 3 double-sided discs and it is coming out only 4 months after the previous release. I just hope Fox doesn’t do this half-assed. I would be willing to wait a few extra months to get this DVD if it would mean getting it done right.

I love Khan.

As with anything that gets better with time, King of The Hill is possibly one of the best adult animated series out there. Surrounded by fellow alley-way bumpkins, Hank Hill’s life is far from the everyday, ordinary, Texas American. With Dale’s nuerotic antics, Bill’s lovable yet pathetic slothness, Playa’ pimp Boomhauer, know it all-know nothing wife Peggy, burst out into song, open minded son Bobby, this is a cast of characters which one doesn’t outshine the other. Truely a hilarious series and one worth collecting.
