Being an avid movie and music fan, I’m always happy to find hidden gems in either artform that can take me by surprise. I will also say that on most occasions I usually tend to agree with the critics in their attitudes and assertions. However, this was not such a case. When I recently stumbled upon this movie, I had never heard of it; the cast immediately intrigued me, especially Ingrid Bergman (in a 60’s comedy?!) I did a little research and was dissappointed to see that most of the reviews of this film were either lukewarm or negative, with most of the complaints being made about the “miscasting of Ingrid Bergman”. Interesting enough, Goldie Hawn managed to win an Academy Award for her role…(was 1969 that bad a year for actresses?).

Anyway, I wasn’t expecting much when I finally watched it, especially after reading Leonard Maltin’s review. However, I quickly found myself thouroughly enjoying the scenarios unfolding. Lighthearted, yes…but very fun. It is very much in line with the Neil Simon plays/film of the era, having also been derived from a Broadway play. I have to say that good old Leonard is wrong on this one, as are many other critcs. The most astonishing error is the claim that Ingrid Bergman was miscast and has no comedic timing. She was a riot to watch in a role like this; I’ll say the best moments in the film are hers. To my eyes, Bergman appears to be having a blast with this role and it is quite apparent. At this point in her career, her mid 50’s, it is wholly enjoyable to see the still beautiful Bergman having some lighthearted, carefree fun.
I am surprised that the Academy chose to honor Goldie Hawn for her performance. I found her to be a tad too cooky, even for a ’60’s go-go girl. Walter Matthau, however, plays the role of a sneaky dentist quite well and is fully enjoyable.
Apart from the actors’ performances, I did also enjoy the look and feel of the film. While many films from the 60’s and 70’s appear, to me, to be hopelessly dated in both of these aspects, I found that the “1969″ in this film looked great. It was actually very appealing…oranges, browns, flowers, and miniskirts, et.al.
All in all, a very satisfying, simple little romp. Look folks, I’m not saying this is a masterpiece by any stretch, but I definately found this worthy seeing. The DVD has no extras to speak of…just a trailer of the film, as well as trailers for two other completely unrelated film (?) However, the transfer of the film to DVD is surprisingly satisfying…colors are rich and vibrant, with minimal artifacts, film dirt/damage. Also, and thankfully, the Widescreen is anamorphic. Of course, there is the obligatory inclusion of the Standard (aka butchered)Version on the flipside of the disk, for those who haven’t made the transition to the CORRECT way that is widescreen. (ok…so maybe that was a little unnecessary)
So if you’ve possibly not seen or heard of this film and are interested, don’t listen to the critics on this one. Give it a try, it’s a good time.

This comedy is not thin. It has absolutely no sag, a good and actually believable storyline, likable and believable characters, great acting, and it’s very funny. This is what they mean when they say they don’t make comedies like this anymore. Written at a time when Hollywood did not presume that the audience only needed a display of bodily fluids and lame story lines to be satisfied.

The film demonstrates another point: the great comedic actors don’t try to be funny. They just act. I don’t know if Walter Mathau ever won an Oscar, but if he didn’t he would be, like Cary Grant, one of the greatest actors never to have done so. He was not only a great comedy actor (”Cactus Flower”, “Odd Couple” and “A New Leaf”), but could quite convincingly play a thug (”Strangers When We Meet”) and a tough, no-nonsense cop (”The Laughing Policeman”).

In this film, he’s brilliant as always. With all respect to the new 20 million dollar a film generation, could Adam Sandler play the role of Julian Winston without simply playing, oh, Adam Sandler?

Ingrid Bergman is incredible. And by that, I mean incredibly sexy. You have no difficulty whatsoever seeing why Walter Mathau eventually picks her over a 21 year old Goldie Hawn. And you fully understand why the much younger man nuzzles her neck while dancing with her. While watching the film, I kept reminding myself that it had been made 25 years after “Casablanca” and yet there she was, still looking smashing.

So yeah, it’s “dated”. Were that more contemporary Hollywood comedies, maybe even one, were so dated.

The content of this video is a bit slow, which is probably more by intent than anything – I’m good with boring for bedtime preparation. My issue with this video is more the commercial at the beginning and the end of the video for the new Einstein Pals product line. They placed the commercial inside the “Play Once” and “Repeat Play” parameters, so once he’s worn down from the ‘boring’ video, the stupid upbeat commercial comes on with louder tone and awakening pictures to ruin the “mood”. Disney has plenty of other opportunites to market their materials without inserting a contradictive ad to what should be a mellow video.

We love the baby Einstein videos and have many of them. As adults watching these, we were looking forward to this one because we both love lullabies. We were sorely disappointed that it is basically all classical music (Brahms) with only a tease of “Hush Little Baby” and a short “Lullaby, Say Goodnight” finale in there.

The sleeping lamb blowing the feather was cute.

This has got to be the best pokèmon video ever. First of all, all 3 shows have a different personality then all the other pokèmon shows, especially island of the giant pokèmon. I recommend this video to everybody!

This video is about how our heroes and Team R. on the submerged S.S Anne. They must escape before the ship falls into a deep canyon. They encounter giant pokemon and giant Tentacruel.

The story was exciting and funny. But it was a little sad. I would recommend this video to pokemon fans.

Like one review has already stated maybe one reason this movie didnt recieve all the glory it deserved is maybe american movie audience wasnt ready to see Mel Gibson in such a dark roll, thats my take on it to.Now with this unrated directors version its even better, gone is blue filter over the picture replaced with a remasterd version which colors are vibrant, crisp, its really has a great picture quality, its more vilolent and to the point, gone is Mel’s voice over(which also makes it better),its got a completely new musical score, basicly the story is the same but its told diffrent with a completly new ending. There’s also really great special features that includes a 30min piece on why and how this directors cut was made.I’m glad the director finally got his movie and way to go paramount this is not some hoax special edition like so many others its a diffrent kind of film a special edition worth picking up for sure…way to go Paramount

The best action movie I’ve seen this year isn’t in theaters. You may think you’ve seen it, but probably haven’t. “Payback” is back, this time the way the director envisioned the film, not the suits. “You don’t make pictures for the elite,” producer/star Mel Gibson says today, explaining why Paramount and Warner Bros. took the noirish gangland movie away from freshman director Brian Helgeland. After 10 days of reshoots, a new final (third) act was tacked on, voiceover was added a la “Blade Runner” and Kris Kristofferson walked on as a new major character. Audiences still were amazed how brutal the Gibson character was when they had to “Get ready to root for the bad guy,” as the marketing had it.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Payback – The Director’s Cut! Click Here

Same old story about artists and Hollywood, but this time came a happier ending. In 2005, Paramount and Gibson gave Helgeland another shot at the film, eight years after its release. The tapes turned up missing, so Helgeland and his editor recut the film using film. And so we have “Payback: Straight Up — the Director’s Cut.”

Now, this is one hard-boiled movie. Gibson plays a criminal who comes back to town looking for the partner who stole half his loot, and his wife, following a heist. Along the way he single-handedly takes on both the syndicate and Asian drug dealers, slugs a woman (a scene the studios cut), and stirs up a John Woo-like shootout as the bloody finale. Supporting actors Lucy Liu, Gregg Henry and Maria Bello all do fine work.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Payback – The Director’s Cut! Click Here

There are multiple DVD extras, including a director’s commentary, but the one to catch is the half-hour “Same Story — Different Movie,” all about the film’s resurrection. Audio and video are sharp on the DVD — and better on high definition discs, although in places the colors seem a bit too jacked up for a gritty, bleach-bypass film. “Payback” comes from the same book as “Point Blank” with Lee Marvin, an even better film from 1969.

I must admit, that as of recent I have enjoyed current mainstream movies regardless if they are released to the theater or directly to video so I can abase them. In other words, I truly find pleasure in ripping movies apart. It has been my perception, my perception, that about 70% of movies made in the past 5 to 6 years are horrid.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Rambo! Click Here

One might ask why I feel this way, well it is rather simple. Most movies are a plug in for a new phone, car or maybe to promote a soundtrack. These movies also rely more on special effects and visual stimulation, where acting, directing and story take the backseat. Therefore, movies (for the most part) in modern times are nothing more than a 90 to 100 minute commercial.

Then of course there are the movies that are so over the top they are just down right silly. This is the perception I had when I saw the trailer for “Rambo” (it was titled “John Rambo” when I first viewed it on the internet). I thought, “What the hell is Stallone thinking”? I didn’t see the most recent “Rocky”, but I heard it wasn’t any good. I didn’t really care too much about the quality of a new “Rocky” movie, but I felt like there was nothing else to do and all doors were closed when “Rocky 5″ was made. Why was Stallone going back to Rocky? Was there a point to it? Now he is going to make another Rambo movie, why? Both these characters whose names start with “R” make a return after not being seen for almost 20 years?

Buy,Download, Or Stream Rambo! Click Here

I digress to the trailer for Rambo I saw on the internet. I was laughing so hard I couldn’t take it. The way this movie was presented was comical. I had said to my brother and some friends, “I can’t wait to see this movie, I need a good laugh”. Then the day came, it was a work night (the same as a school night, but you go to work early the next day instead of school) and I went to a 9:40pm showing with my brother and two of our friends. I was so pumped and all four of us were ready to laugh very hard. As a side note, this is the first time I had been in a movie theater to watch a new release in a very long time.

We watched and we absorbed this movie and when the end credits rolled and the lights came back on in the theater we were speechless. I thought this was the first wonderful and moving film I had seen in a long time. (So did everyone else in my view party.) I couldn’t believe it. I have seen all the other Rambo films and yes they were entertaining, but I wouldn’t say they were deep or compelling pieces of cinema. This new Rambo movie had something to say.

It followed a different format, it seemed more dramatic and the violence (there was plenty of it) was brutal and candid. When I say candid, I mean that many of things that happened in this movie, happens in the real world.

The plot of this film is rather simple, Rambo now lives in Southeastern Asia near Burma and some American humanitarians need a guide and ride by boat to provide health care, food and education to the poor people in the area. They find John Rambo and after some persuasions from a female team member (Julie Benz) Rambo signs on.

Consequently, there is a large militant and fundamental group that has nothing better to do than torture and massacre the less fortunate people in their country. It doesn’t take a wizard to figure out what happens next, Rambo, guns, violence, death, and blah, blah, blah. However, the violence doesn’t seem to be moot or without justification if that makes sense. The best comparison I can make is to “Saving Private Ryan”, the violence in that film was graphic and at times over the top, but made a point to portray the reality that was World War 2. “Rambo” has the exact type of feel to it with respect to violence being graphic, over the top and making a point. Mind you I am not saying that “Rambo is a better film or as good as “Saving Private Ryan”, but it was used more as a frame of reference. Oddly enough, “Saving Private Ryan” came out in 1998 and “Rambo” came out ten years later (2008), perhaps in 2018 there will be another violent film with a message.

Stallone did a good job too in this film he gave a rather minimal performance, not much dialogue but did display a level of dichotomy towards his emotions to events in the plot. I felt the story was also simplistic, but it worked, the movie didn’t need a multi-leveled storyline. I also felt the direction of the film was very good too; by the way Sly wrote and directed this movie.

“Rambo” was a motion picture that stirred myriad thoughts in my head when it was over. It made me think how revolting and disgusting it is that there are still countries in the world that can’t get health care or are being “controlled” and/or restricted to certain living conditions by a dictatorship or totalitarian government that results to violence or casualties of human lives. It also made me think how insane it is that U.S. presidential candidates are able to raise thousands, if not millions, of dollars for their campaigns, but when they get into office, it then becomes difficult to “raise” money for the things they promised before they were the incumbent. Then I thought about how everyone wants to go “green” and save the environment, yet it costs more money and there is less tax breaks to “go green”. Not to mention Earth Day is only one day a year, rather than year long recognition. What about relying on fossil fuel when there are other forms of fuel for our cars/machines? Or that many people are more up to date with Reality Television than what is going on in the world.

In conclusion, I am not sure this was Sylvester Stallone’s intention to stir the pot of modern social sciences or in my case promote schizophrenia when making this movie. However, I felt this film didn’t pull any punches and says a lot about the world we live in, on many levels. I recommend this film to anyone who wants an eye opening experience. This is a lot coming from a person who thought this movie was going to be the number one unintentional comedy of 2008 and now believes it was one of the best movies made in a very long time.

Sly, I commend you.

Of all the Rambo movies this one is the best. The most violent, brutal stunning movie I have ever seen. Emotionally draining story of some do gooders that want to take medicine and help to a group of poor opressed people in Burma. They are under control of the brutal military that wants no one to hear this story let alone help these people. The do gooders talk Rambo into taking them up river to the settlement. He is reluctant to take them but the woman with the group talks him into taking them. Of course they are taken by the military and most everyone in the village is slaughtered. Someone from back home comes looking for them when they never return home. Rambo takes a band of merceneries to the settlement to bring them back. The do-gooders are held captive and tortured. It’s nonstop heartpounding action after Rambo gets there.

Iv’e never seen anything like the violence in this movie. It’s incredible.

It’s filmed in Burma and the cinemaphotography is outstanding. Beautiful scenery. Good use of light and dark and camera angles. Very well done.

Be prepared for the violence because it is extreme. What’s shown in this movie is going on there as I speak. We don’t hear the story in the media. Stallone made this movie with Burmese people as actors and they were all at risk making this movie. Stallone still has it at 61 years.

If you don’t like Rambo then don’t bother. Otherwise it’s highly entertaining!

Slickly made and featuring a terrifically involving performance from its lead man Kuno Becker, Goal is the epitome of a your rags-to-riches fairy tale, a truly romanticized ode to improbable dreams. Thankfully, the direction and performances are good enough to get us through the progressively hackneyed storyline and a screenplay that seems intent to offer up almost every single cliché in the book.

Illegally crossing into America as a child, Santiago Muñez, grows up in the barrio of East Los Angeles, sure of only one thing – his indelible love of soccer and that one day he wants to do something with his talent. He supports himself by working as a kitchen hand in a Chinese restaurant and as a gardener for his blue-collar dad, Hernan (Tony Plana) who tells him to stop dreaming and focus on supporting his family.

Glen Foy (Stephen Dillane) – a part-time talent scout and a former championship footballer with contacts in U.K. soccer world – spots Santiago playing and manages to persuade Erik Dornhelm (Marcel Iures), the German manager of Newcastle United, to give Santiago a tryout if he comes to the U.K.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Goal! – The Dream Begins! Click Here

With the help of his kindly grandmother (Miriam Colon), who tells him “to follow his dream,” Santiago arrives in London, takes the train north and turns up unannounced on Glen’s doorstep. Now in the cold and rainy Northeast England, Santiago has a month to prove himself worthy of playing alongside the cocky playboy David Beckham-like star Gavin Harris (Alessandro Nivola).

Apart from the obviously clichéd look of the film – Los Angeles is filmed in shades of burnt out orange and the UK is constantly awash in rainy washed-out blue – the poor Santiago is faced with many hurdles and indeed looks like an exotic looking fish out of water as he fights to stay on the reserve soccer team and achieve his inevitable path towards football glory.

The drama comes from the fact that he keeps mucking up. He’s not used to playing in the rain and mud and there’s the problem with his asthma that he keeps secret from Dornhelm and the attractive team nurse (Anna Friel) whom he has a crush on. He’s on the team and then he’s off the team, then there’s a tragedy at home which forces him to rethink his priorities, and then he’s faced with the inevitable moral choice of being an upright young man rather than party with the irresponsible Gavin.

The stereotypical characters are all here – the conceited and uncaring agent, the kindly grandma, the love-interest nurse, the cheering coach, the nasty team member, the truculent father, the quietly supportive kid brother. The film starts off very strong – the best scenes are those set in Los Angeles – but the story steadily begins to hinge on contrived coincidences and eventually starts to look like one long training session.

Becker is the main reason to see this film – he’s an actor with a big future, a charming, ruggedly fine-looking presence, and even though his playing scenes are clearly doubled, we get a strong feel for the character both on and off the pitch.

Of course, we do get caught up in it all as the film surges to its astonishingly predicable conclusion, which mainly tugs at the heartstrings because this fine cast has managed to earn our sympathy. Perhaps the next two installments of this story – yes, there’s a Goal 2 and 3 soon to be released! – will generate a bit more invention and creativity and finally make this franchise of Santiago’s journey, a story that we can truly root for. Mike Leonard October 06.

Yes, this is another sports biography that offers a stage on which to play out the drama of the possibilities of dreams of the disenfranchised to become a reality. There are many, many films like this one and will doubtless be more: something there is about the ‘team spirit’ in the identity crisis of whether or not the poor (financially) new guy will be able to make the physical grade that draws large audiences. It is a formula and it often works despite weak structure and production values.

In the case of GOAL! THE DREAM BEGINS the viewer can put aside the doubts as to whether the film can make it on its own: this little low profile movie is well written (Mike Jefferies’s story adapted for the screen by Adrian Butchart), well directed by Danny Cannon who knows well how to integrate live sports scenes into the drama, and consistently well acted by a troop of excellent actors, beginning with the very vibrant, handsome, and charismatic Kuno Becker (’Lucia, Lucia’, ‘Imagining Argentina’, ‘Once Upon a Wedding’, ‘English as a Second Language’), a 28 year old Mexican actor with an assured future in the lead role of Santiago. The supporting roles are classy contributions by the gifted Alessandro Nivola (’The Sisters’, ‘Junebug’, ‘The Clearing’, ‘Laurel Canyon’, ‘Love’s Labour’s Lost’, ‘Mansfield Park’ etc), the very beautiful Anna Friel, Stephen Dillane, Marcel Iures, Tony Plana, Miriam Colon to mention only a few.

The story is secondary: as a child devotee of soccer Santiago immigrates illegally into the US with his family, grows up in Los Angeles working as a gardener, a dishwasher and other menial tasks while he consumes his spare time with developing his unique talents for soccer. Despite his father’s insistence that he remain with the family business of gardening, Santiago is discovered by a scout on vacation from England, a bond develops and soon Santiago is off to Newcastle to pursue his dream of being a professional soccer player. The rest is pretty obvious – the ups and downs of an asthmatic kid competing in the wild world of sports. The star of the moment is Alessandro Nivola and despite the differences in their goals and social life they become friends who help each other in tender ways. There is of course a love interest, telephone calls and encouragement form Santiago’s grandmother, adjustments to life in the UK -all altering the road toward Santiago’s eventually attained goal.

The film is a bit lengthy (two hours) for the content, but then we understand this is the first of a trilogy, so get used to the story and the characters as they all remain constant for the next two installments. Whatever reservations you may have about sitting through another predictable sports movie just relax them: Kuno Becker alone is worth the time invested in this very fine little film. Grady Harp, September 06

Movie Title: Blue
Average customer review:

Blue is available for streaming or downloading.

Click Here to Stream or Download Blue

“Blue” is the first film in Krzysztof Kieslowski’s “Three Colors” trilogy that examines life in contemporary European society. Each of the three films corresponds to a color in the French flag and a segment of the French national motto. They are “Blue” (liberté), “White” (egalité) and “Red” (fraternité).

The theme of liberty runs throughout “Blue,” but it is a cruel, unwelcome liberty. The husband and daughter of Julie (Juliet Binoche), a young French woman, are killed in a car accident at the beginning of the film. She, of course, is devastated. She briefly considers suicide, but is unable to go through with it. That would take an intensity of emotion-grief, loss, despair, something-that she simply does not have. She is so cold inside that she can feel nothing at all, not even sadness. (Blue, after all, is the coldest color of the spectrum.) In one telling scene, Julie comes upon her housekeeper who is weeping profusely. “Why are you crying?,” she asks her. “I am crying,” the maid replies, “because you are not.”

Julie decides that her only course of action is to free herself completely from her past. She sells her house and all of her possessions and moves to an apartment in Paris where she knows no one and no one knows her. The only thing she keeps is her daughter’s blue bead lamp, a colorful focal point in her drab, spartan quarters, and the only reminder of her lost life.

Before she can leave, though, Julie must give herself one final test. She seduces Olivier (Benoit Regent), a rather dull former colleague of her husband’s who, not incidentally, is in love with her. They make love on a solitary mattress in her empty house, but she feels nothing. Perhaps she really is incapable of love. Having confirmed her suspicion, she walks away without even a backward glance.

Julie’s disappearance, however, is difficult. Her late husband was a famous composer and they both remain the subject of media interest and gossip. It is rumored that Julie actually wrote his music herself, and it is true that the sounds of his last, unfinished work haunt her throughout the film. No matter where she goes, she cannot escape his (or is it her?) music because it lives within her mind and her soul. Occasionally the action is stopped completely and the screen fades to black, accompanied by the fortissimo sounds of his last, farewell concerto. It is an interesting, risky device, but it works well in conveying the dislocation, the sense of forever being apart from others, that Julie feels.

In the most interesting twist in the film, Julie meets her late husband’s mistress, Sandrine, (Florence Pernel), a woman she did not even know existed. Sandrine is pregnant with his baby, a shocking revelation, but Julie does not hate her for it. Rather, she is remarkably generous and kind, just as he had always promised Sandrine she was. All Julie wants to know is, “Did he love you?” She answers her own question, though, when she spots the cross hanging from Sandrine’s neck, the same beloved gift her husband gave to her.

Kieslowski takes his time in telling his story. Things do not happen quickly, nor are events momentous when they occur. The pacing is slow and languorous, but certainly never boring. Unlike most movies made today, this is a quiet, subtle film. Kieslowski and his cinematographer do a lot with the lighting, particularly in the scenes in the swimming pool. Those shots are awash in soft, evocative blue hues that give the scenes an exquisite, dream-like feel.

The performances by all of the leads are splendid. Juliette Binoche is truly a marvelous actress. She was so good in Godard’s “Hail Mary” and Malle’s “Damage,” and she is even better here. Her character does not say much, nor does she take much dramatic action. Most of what we learn about her comes from staring into her sad eyes and regarding her troubled face. She is able to convey so much, not with broad strokes or grand gestures, but with intricate nuances and careful expressions. It is a performance to treasure.

As I watched “Blue,” I was reminded of another excellent French production, “Un Coeur en Hiver,” that also dealt with painful music and the tragedy of a cold, unfeeling heart. The similarities are subtle, but I think both of these films demonstrate one quality sorely lacking in most Hollywood pictures: maturity. The average major studio release is targeted at the core demographic of 14 to 24 year old males, not exactly the most discerning audience around. This strategy results in a lot of dreadful films being made. Fortunately for those of us with a more highly developed aesthetic sense, there are films like “Blue” around to satisfy our longings.

Director Krzysztof Kieslowski’s “Blue” is the first of a trilogy of films which take their title from the colors of the french flag (blue, white, and red) and their theme from the French motto of “liberty, equality, fraternity.” In this achingly beautiful interpretation, liberty comes as the result of loss.

The film opens in a shroud of bluish fog, as Julie (Juliette Binoche), her husband Patrice and their young daughter are on a car trip. Because of the fog, the Alfa Romeo continues to go straight when the road curves, and the car collides with a tree. Only Julie survives.

Although her bandages and bruises disappear rather quickly, Julie’s emotions take much longer to heal. The rest of the movie is an eloquent, moving look at how she deals with the aftermath of her loss, from the seemingly trivial annoyance of finding mice in her new apartment to the discovery that her husband had kept a mistress for years.

She tries to repress her emotions by freeing herself from her past: she sells the contents of her country estate and moves to a small apartment in a section of Paris where no one knows her, signing the lease with her maiden name. All she brings with her, besides books and clothes, is a chandelier of dripping blue crystals, a prism which refracts the past.

As one would guess from the title, the color blue washes over this movie, tinting it with melancholy. But more striking than the film’s use of color is its music. Patrice was a famous composer who was writing a concerto to celebrate the unification of Europe at the time of his death. Although Julie destroys his notes after his death, his secretary had made a copy and sent it to his partner, Olivier (Benoit Regent), who is now working to complete the unfinished symphony.

Throughout the movie, whenever Julie’s emotions well up within her, strains of the concerto flood the movie — the screen goes black so the viewer, too, focuses only on the music, which seems to express at once both the anguish and release that Julie feels.

Through Kieslowski’s cinematography and Binoche’s subtle facial expressions, the viewer is immersed in the understated emotion of the film — an immersion that does not end when the credits roll, for the film leaves a few issues unresolved that make it, like its main character, such a captivating enigma. Purhaps my love for this movie is because the first time I watched it, I was with a bunch of slap-happy children. We laughed and laughed and it instantly won a place in my heart. It’s now one of my family’s comedy classics. We return to it whenever we just need to laugh and slapstick silliness and lighten our mood. It’s too bad it seemed to commercially flop and has become a somewhat difficult-to-find cult film. I always recommend it to friends who enjoy watching movies with their kids, and nobody has been disappointed. They know they’re getting into a “stupid” movie, and they love it!

It’s a great movie and we’ve waited quite a few years to get it on DVD. But, your prices are ridiculous — It’s cheaper to join the Disney Movie Club and by it from them (plus get more movies for your money.

When the Carol Burnett show was on television, she had a skit about foreign films where the stories were mistranslated. When she did the take off on NEVER ON SUNDAY, Burnett’s Illia did all that Mercouri’s Illia did in the movie, but the lines matched those of a young school teacher collecting money for supplies rather than those of a prostitute. The skit piqued my interest in this film and could hardly wait a while until I saw it on video, since I was probably only ten when the Carol Burnett skit first aired.

Perhaps what gives the movie its appeal is the fact that Illia, a gorgeous Greek prostitute is not the stereotype of a prostitute. She is not a miserable waif in need of salvation. She is a free spirit who cannot, or perhaps better stated, will not be tamed. The role is played masterfully by Melina Mercouri who won an award at Cannes for her performance. Homer, the American writer who wants her for himself is played by Jules Dassin. The film is set in a small Greek fishing village after World War II amend the locals give the film a great deal of flavor. There is plenty of Bouzouki music and Illia sings a rather seductive version of the well known theme song.

The DVD has a trailer for the original film. In some ways the commercial for this film is humorous since it has very little to do with the actual plot, but I suppose since this film was so risqué in its day, the trailer had to be vague.

Since the film is in black and white, it has a historic flair, but the tale itself is timeless, which makes this a true all time classic.

Hard to believe (but maybe not after perusing this site) that I am only the second person to comment on this movie. Melina Mercouri was one of the most vibrant actresses of her era. a Greek treasure along the lines of Helen. She was the essnce of Greek spirit. I don’t know if her politics has hindered her legacy in America: if that’s the case it’s not fair. This is a marvellous paean to life, to exuberance, to transcendent spirit. By all means, buy it or rent it or at the least make yourself acqauinted with it in whatever manner you can. I’m amazed it’s not shown on American television. But then again, The Trojan Women isn’t shown here either , nor is Medea, both of them powerful films dealing with powerful ladies.

A great look into the mind of Rob Thomas and he describes some of the inspirations behind many of his hit songs. Thomas gets very personal even revealing the fact that he doens’t like the sound of his own voice! This DVD features a great mix of songs from their initial album “Yourself or Someone Like you” and the follow up “Mad Season”.

The only downside to Matchbox Twenty’s storytelling session is the lack of acoustic versions of hit songs; a favorite aspect of mine that blends in nicely with the intimate feel of the show. This is more than made up for with the a country version of push, and nice variations for fans wanting a twist in their favorite CD versions.

The highlight of the show is a piano version of 3AM that will leave you speechless. Seeing Rob alone on the piano after hearing his meaning behind the song brings the audience to tears, and a new appreciation of the song to all who listen.

Overall a great performance by a great band that is sure to please all who watch. VH1’s storytellers is always a great show and Matchbox Twenty’s episode is no exception so enjoy!

It’s called Storytellers for a reason! This DVD is Matchbox Twenty and specifically Rob Thomas telling the stories behind some of their greatest hits up through their Mad Season album. This is a wonderful music DVD plus you get the added benefit of hearing the inside stories on some of your favorite songs. And Rob Thomas is just so endearing and cool. You just can’t help loving this band. The highlights for me were Push and Rest Stop. And a cover of Lonely Weekend and a country version of Push are great fun. I highly recommend it.
