My 1 1/2 year old loves all of the Kidsongs dvds, but this is not one of her favorites. The main beef I have with this one is that just about all of the songs center around what people want/ are getting for Christmas. I don’t like all of the emphasis on getting presents, and think the true meaning of Christmas is completely ignored here. Even Silent Night is an instrumental (the rest are sung by the Kidsongs gang).

Songs Include:
Deck the Halls
All I Want For Christmas is my Two Front Teeth
Silent Night
Frosty the Snowman
Jingle Bells
Santa, Please Don’t Forget Me
If I had a Pony for Christmas
The Twelve Days of Christmas
Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer
Santa Claus is Coming to Town
We Wish You a Merry Christmas

My 3 year old daughter, Olivia, has several of the Kidsongs videos. I can let her watch them and not worry about the content or language (there aren’t many videos like that anymore). This one is like the rest; entertaining and fun. We both love it. I’m sure we’ll be singing Jingle Bells all year long. Thanks, Melissa L. Florence, South Carolina

I was unable to watch Amor Real (Real Love) while it aired on Univision, but I bought this DVD to get a gist of the story and thought that it is well edited considering that they reduced the 95 episodes into a 400-minute, film-like format full of highlights of the show. The love triangle between Manuel Fuentes-Guerra (Fernando Colunga), Matilde Peñalver (Adela Noriega) and Adolfo Solis (Mauricio Islas) is full of layers and intrigue that make this series far from the usual rosy and sweet love story that characterizes most Televisa productions. Mauricio Islas captivated me with his compelling portrayal of the very complex Adolfo Solis. I came to care about him more than the two leads. I also enjoyed the work of Ernesto Laguardia as the gambling addict, black sheep son (a nice departure from his usual good guy roles) and Kika Edgar as the sweet Catalina Heredia. Chantal Adere was great once again as the female antagonist and I enjoyed the addition of the beautiful Leticia Calderon as the tomboyish Jana De La Corcuera. And who could forget Mariana Levy? This is the last we’ll see of this talented actress after her tragic demise just a few days ago. Also, I loved the storyline and its backdrop of the Mexican Revolution. The costumes, historical setting and picturesque views of the Mexican countryside are breathtaking. I thought the English subtitles were great as well. All in all, this is one of the best stories and one of the most lavish productions Televisa (Mexican television network/production company) has created in a long time and I wish I had made the time to watch the whole thing. The DVD extras are a keeper — though I am not impressed with the fact that Mauricio Islas was not included in the Actors’ Trajectory menu (and all because he now works for the competitive US-based network Telemundo). If you loved Amor Real, then you should add this DVD to your collection.

I, like so many of you, adored Amor Real when it was on TV, and a part of me would love to own the whole thing. However, the part of me that lives in the real world doesn’t have the time or money to own a 120-hour soap on dvd. I have a friend who does dvd authoring for a living, and she said that the entire series would take up maybe 15-20 discs. If the 2-disc version costs $20 or $25, how much would a 20-disc version cost? Probably a lot more than anybody would want to spend, even if they could afford it. And it would take months to watch.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Amor Real! Click Here

Besides, this version has English subtitles, so my friends, the majority of whom don’t speak Spanish, can get in on the fun. Fabulous outfits aside, it’s just no good if they can’t follow the plot!

I personally would be thrilled to have a compact, affordable version of my favorite soap. Anything beyond this would be overkill.

Hated: G. G. Allin and the Murder Junkies (Todd Phillips, 1993)

Buy,Download, Or Stream Hated! Click Here

What on god’s green earth has happened to Todd Phillips in the ten years since he released Hated, the definitive G. G. Allin documentary? How, exactly, can one go from covering a dangerous, violent punk icon to doing a documentary about Phish and making really, really bad Tom Green/Wilson Brothers movies (Road Trip, Old School, Starsky and Hutch)? I don’t know, but if you find yourself crawling under the table every time someone even mentions the name Todd Phillips, taking a look at Hated may convince you that there really are the underpinnings of a good documentary filmmaker beneath the present idiocy. Or maybe not. Much of that may depend on your view of his subject, a man on whom no one who’s ever encountered his work can be without an opinion.

For the ten or twenty people who still haven’t heard of him, G. G. Allin was, as Murder Junkies drummer Dino says, “God, Jesus, and Satan all rolled into one,” perhaps the last American rock and roll singer who grasped what the spirit of rock was about, and aimed to bring that spirit back to music. To that effect, Allin would today be called a “performance artist” rather than a rock band frontman, probably. Allin and co.’s now-legendary gigs, three aborted tours’ worth (as brother Merle Allin says, “you never plan on finishing a tour– two reasons: the hospital or the law.”), usually started out looking like punk shows, but ended (long before they should have) in fights, riots, raids by the police, overdoses, what have you. Allin’s notoriety increased a thousandfold when the talk show circuit picked him up in the early nineties (some of the footage from his appearance on Geraldo is shown here), and as Phillips, who had been making Hated off and on since 1988, got ready to put the finishing touches on the film, Allin had gone from underground icon to public animal number one. The band kicked off the Terror in America tour in 1993, with much of the interview footage with the band members coming just before or just after the start of the tour. Allin was dead within days of the completion of the film, of which Phillips then halted postproduction to add another ten minutes of footage to the end.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Hated! Click Here

Phillips is obviously influenced by the Errol Morris school of documentary filmmaking: just sit back with the camera and let those you’re interviewing make complete fools of themselves. But there’s more to Phillips than that; he fades into the background at times, but there’s never the sense that the subjects of the documentary forget the filmmaker is there. (Phillips has confirmed, in interviews, that this never happened.) Not surprising when you consider that Allin’s modus operandi, more often than not, was to attack the audience; the filmmaker is part of the audience, therefore…

The documentary itself is interesting enough, and refuses to paint Allin as either saint or sinner (surprising for a filmmaker who’d been in contact with Allin for five years), letting the viewer make his own judgments on that score. And viewers should, without doubt, though the pervasive language and nudity (both Allin himself and drummer Dino often performed naked or nearly so), strong sexual content, and what I can only describe as adult situations (despite the infantile nature of same) is likely to put the vast majority of viewers off ever renting this. But the real value in the DVD release, and the most ironic portion of it, is fifty minutes of extra footage recorded on the last day of Allin’s life. The footage shows the soundcheck and aborted (halfway through the second song) legendary set at New York club The Gas Station, often considered the most violent set the band ever played (it has been reported numerous times that over a hundred attendees rioted after the show was shut down), and about thirty minutes of Allin’s antics with Dino and a core group of fans afterwards while they went on a quest for heroin. What emerges in this footage is a picture of G. G. Allin that, while not diametrically opposed to the stage presence and the person that emerges from interviews, is certainly a different, and fascinating, side of Allin’s character. In the documentary, Allin is characterized by almost everyone as a complete misanthrope, a person who would just as soon kill you as look at you. The footage of Allin wandering (naked, at the beginning of the trek) around the streets of New York City with eight to ten others and twenty or thirty following at a distance shows a smiling, affable guy who’s usually got his arms draped around one or two people, haranguing police but never turning nasty about it, acknowledging fans with smiles and victory signs (yes, there are two fingers raised there), and generally being anything but dangerous-looking, as long as you look past the fact that he’s covered in filth and (his own) blood. The end effect is to raise a whole lot of questions about a person for whom society assumed it already had all the answers. The documentary itself is capable; releasing the final footage with it is brilliant. ****

Hated is a great documentary film that takes you inside the man who called himself GG Allin. GG Allin was the only true punk in music history. When everybody else was just posing and pretending GG was living his music of pain, torment, and suffering. The camera captures everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) in this documentary from GG beating up fans to bloodying himself with a microphone to deficating on stage and rubbing it all over himself and eating it to GG letting a female friend urinate in his mouth. And one other thing GG didn’t discriminate there is footage of him beating up a woman at a spoken word performance in Boston. GG Allin hated everybody, most of all himself. He had no home, one shirt and one pair of pants. Hated also describes GG’s relationship with John Wayne Gacy, the famed serial killer. The movie is great but there is also 50 extra minutes of GG Allin’s final performance on the eve of his death at the Gasoline Alley in NYC which ended with 2 songs in ten minutes, GG getting naked, bloodied, and covered in his own waste and then inciting a riot. You just can’t make this stuff up. GG Allin was a disgusting, disturbed, vile human being who just happens to be my idol. RIP GG Allin.

Although “Deep Impact” invariably gets compared to “Armageddon”, I think it’s more appropriate to compare it against all other disaster movies. Viewed in that light, it not only surpasses “Armageddon”, but every other film in the genre.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Deep Impact! Click Here

Unlike most disaster epics, “Deep Impact” is character driven. I think this is a direct effect of its having been directed by a woman rather than a man. While the special effects are there and are impressive, what drives this film are the emotions of the excellent ensemble cast. All of them ring true, from the occasional duplicitousness of the government bureaucrats, to the real tear jerking moments of those facing tough life and death decisions, to the small intimate moments. It’s powerful enough stuff that I have to believe that a lot of the negative reaction the film elicited vis-a-vis “Armageddon” came from guys who don’t like their action movies to move them to the verge of tears in public.

All disaster films depend on a hook to set them up. In this respect, most fall far short of realism and believability. Of ones that come immediately to mind, only the cosmic collision movies and “The Towering Inferno” had realistic setups.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Deep Impact! Click Here

All disaster films depend on the heros to come up with some way to save the day. Of the ones with a believable setup, many still fall short of believable and/or technically accurate resolutions. This is where “Armageddon” failed miserably. Mimi Leder had expert advice from NASA and it shows. “Armageddon” has some impressive training facilities shots from NASA, but ignored the actual technology. Very early in “Armageddon”, when I saw the two shuttles docking with the space station by coming in from opposite directions, performing clearly aerodynamic banking maneuvers, I was ready to start pelting the screen with rotten tomatoes!

Giving the devil his due, both films glossed over the full impact of operations in the microgravity environment of the comet’s surface.

Still, it’s the raw emotions that elevate “Deep Impact” above its genre, not just the technical stuff. It’s actually best in its quiet moments. Among the ones that clearly stand out:

The president (Morgan Freeman) tries to continue to maintain an upbeat message as each plan successively fails. His press conferences and the dialog around them rings true.

The dialog between the reporter (the usually annoying Tea Leoni) and her mother (Vanessa Redgrave) also rings with truth.

The ultimate reconciliation between the reporter and her father (Maximilian Schell) just before the end reflects the bitterness of choices each has made in getting to that point.

The reunion of the kid who helped discover the comet (Elijah Wood) and his girlfriend (Leelee Sobieski), oblivious for the moment to what was going on around them – again, this simply rings true.

The astronaut observing wryly, “Well, the good news is that we’ll all have high schools named after us.” No melodramatics, no macho heroism, just someone injecting a sense of humor into a shared fate she has accepted as necessary to save the people they love. My favorite line in the film.

From start to finish, this film is a class act. A realistic film that carries an emotional impact to be expected of its serious subject matter. Part of this impact is that you can’t always guess in advance which characters will and will not survive. Of the ones who don’t survive, not all face their fate gracefully, but all are believable.

This movie began my fandom of Mimi Leder, who I consider to be one of the best directors working today – not always commercial, but always excellent. This is on my short list of my top ten favorite movies of all time. Highly recommended!

Of all of the disaster epics I have seen in my life, Deep Impact was the most moving and original. I cried my eyes out, even when the sentimentality was over-the-top, as with the kid/romance subplot. I thought the emotional rendering of a core group of people you come to know as the world is about to end was wonderfully done, and so movingly told. Tea Leoni got a short shrift; her TV anchor was appropriately confounded, disturbed and knocked out by the juxtaposition of her own success/ambition coming about via the worst single disaster known to man. The astronaut sequences were well-done, and featured a small ensemble of strong acting, lead by the reliable Robert Duvall. It was refreshing to see Morgan Freeman as a President you wish was your own. James Horner’s music moves the multi-layered plot with deep emotion and color. Though the movie surely delivers knockout special effects in its final reel, this movie is no Armageddon; expect a deep resonant response, one of the heart. It makes sense that this movie was directed by Mimi Leder; it has a woman’s touch, which for me brought it a sensitivity and compelling beauty. There are so many moving moments in the final 20 minutes it will be difficult to remain calm, and dry-eyed.

I bought this DVD expecting to finally get to see Ed Edd n Eddy’s “Boo Haw Haw”. Be warned: It is NOT on this disc! There are some fine episodes on here, but that one is not present. Here’s the actual list (from the disc in front of me as I type):

Foster’s Home: “Bloooo”

Juniper Lee: “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Juniper Lee”

Billy & Mandy: “the Bubble with Billy”

Buy,Download, Or Stream Cartoon Network Halloween 3 – Sweet Sweet Fear! Click Here

Ed, Edd n Eddy: “Don’t Rain on My Ed”

Kids Next Door: “Operation J.E.W.E.L.S.”

Powerpuff Girls: “Candy’s Dandy”

I was disappointed that “Boo Haw Haw” was not on the disc, being an obvious choice, but “Don’t Rain on My Ed” is one of my favorite Eds episodes, so I don’t feel completely let down. I’m not sure what that episode has to do with Halloween, but a good one nonetheless.

The disc is starkly devoid of extras, apart from CN’s usual promos for upcoming material.

There are good episodes on this disc, and what is there is good quality, but given the absence of the most obvious episode choices and the lack of any extra material, I can’t rate this disc higher than a 3. It’s great if you really like these episodes, otherwise just watch them on TV.

It’s baaaaaack…. This is the third installment of Cartoon Network Halloween. Now for a bit of a rundown of what’s what on the latest Halloween DVD.:

Foster’s: “Bloooo” – An unwell Blooregard turns white as a ghost ! (Let me tell you, that episode was WAY outta control.)

Juniper Lee: “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Juniper Lee” – Young monsters turn into children every Halloween night. Now June must find a way to change them back.

Ed, Edd n Eddy: “Don’t Rain on my Ed” – Time grows short for the Eds as they race towards the candy store for free jawbreakers.

Billy and Mandy: “The Bubble with Billy” – Billy chews on, then intentionally swallows some otherworldly gum Grim gave him.

Kids Next Door: “Operation J.E.W.E.L.S.” – Numbuh 5 searches for the lost “Blurpleberry Supreme”.

Powerpuff Girls: “Candy is Dandy” – The girls are each rewarded a piece of the Mayor’s candy. Now they must save the day again in order to get more.

Now here’s a list of episodes that didn’t seem to make it to the DVD.:

I Am Weasel: “I Are Ghost” – Weasel and Baboon are ghosts in the Ghost Union and must scare someone in order to keep their jobs.

I Am Weasel: “I Am Franken-Weasel” – Mad dentist Dr. Franken-Weasel is itching to get back to his mad scientist roots.

Johnny Bravo: “Going Batty” – To upstage her nerdy boyfriend, a vampire girl goes out with Johnny.

Dexter’s Lab: “Scare Tactics” – Dexter and his dad watch a scary movie and pretty soon the entire night becomes that scary movie.

Cow and Chicken: “Halloween with Dead Ghost Coast to Coast” – Red Guy dressed as a familiar Adult Swim character suggests to Cow and Chicken that they dress up as humans for Halloween. Unfortunately, it didn’t work.

A random episode of “Courage the Cowardly Dog” – This is perhaps the BIGGEST gap in all of volume 3. Since the subtitle to this DVD is “Sweet Sweet Fear”, I would suggest this episode:

“Katz Kandy” – Sick and tired of being second to Muriel, the felonious Katz whips up some mutant jam to kidnap her. Now Courage must save Muriel who is caught between two things: A huge taffy machine and a hungry Eustace.

Surely Volume 4 will have at least one of those episodes, AND the Eds’ “Boo Haw Haw” special. Just wait ’til next year.

Two German filmmakers went to Mongolia’s Gobi desert to make a documentary. Here, they got to know one particular family and witnessed a real story that was unfolding in front of their eyes. They filmed it all. And this film is the result.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Story of the Weeping Camel! Click Here

The family is real. The little girl cries for her mother but quiets when her grandmother gives her a sweet. The two boys act like children everywhere, wide eyed with wonder and wanting to help out their family. The parents are loving. The grandparents are wise. They raise camels and sheep for a living and have been doing so for hundreds of years. There is plenty of food and they seem to have all the things they need even though they live without electricity and just a battery-operated radio to connect them to the outside world. Of course the modern world is influencing them. The little girl wears a sweatshirt with silk-screening on it. The little boy keeps asking for a television set.

The central story, however, is about a camel. Yes, a camel. It’s the birthing season and we watch a camel giving birth and then bonding with her young. That’s the way it’s supposed to be. Another mama camel, however, has a difficult birth. The little one is coming feet first and the mama camel is in a lot of distress. The family watches this all and tries to help, but basically, the mama camel does it all on her own. Then, instead of the instant bonding that we’ve already seen among other camels, this mama camel rejects her little one. The family tries everything to try to make her feed her baby, but she just pushes the little camel away. Days go by and even though the family tries to feed the baby camel, they know that the little one will die if he doesn’t get his mother’s milk in quantity.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Story of the Weeping Camel! Click Here

The two young boys, who are probably about 7 and 13 are sent on a journey to bring back a musician who will play sacred music. The family believes that this might make the mother camel receptive to the baby camel. It’s quite a long trip and looked dangerous even though I knew that there was a film crew along filming the whole thing. The settlement is Russian and there is a school and some stores and a market. Most of all though, there is television. The boys are fascinated.

Soon they return. And the musician comes too. And of course there is a happy ending.

Along the way, though, I felt I was picked up and gently placed down in a culture on the other side of the world. I absorbed the details of their lives. Stressed with them over their problem with the camel. And really cared for them all, including the camel.

I highly recommend this film for everyone. It’s a truly engrossing and heartwarming story as well as being a valuable lesson in geography and cultural anthropology. Don’t miss it!

A visual impression of the environment in the southern Mongolian Gobi desert would be a sandy foreground with tall mountains in the far horizon topped with an endless blue sky. Storms appear with short notice and without consideration of the people inhabiting the desert. Populations in this remote location, where modern technology and monetary system do not apply, must find alternative means for continued existence. Sheep farming and camel breeding are the main means of trade as the earth is too exhausted to farm. The comfort of continual running water or electricity available from the flip of a switch is something of a fantasy. Despite these hardships, the people of the Gobi desert remain in this harsh environment living by their ancient traditions, which the elderly pass down to younger generations.

The Italian, Luigi Falorni, and Mongolian, Byambasuren Davaa, filmmaker with German film background ventured to the unsympathetic land of the Gobi desert where they intended to capture the truth of the people living in this sandy place. The two filmmakers began their shooting in the spring, after the severe winter, as they decided on capturing the life of a family consisting of four different generations living together in a couple of tent-like structures. Daily chores around their home are being immortalized by the camera, which depicts a life style with very little external stimuli. All members of the family tend to the sheep and camels, as children are taught from an early age to help with the chores. Several situations display the family members’ awareness of nature’s phenomenon, as they have to handle camel births and prepare for stormy weather.

Unintentionally, Falorni and Davaa stumble upon a spectacular story, which they were fortunate to transmit to the world through their documentary. The story within the documentary begins at the end of a camel birthing season when one of the camels, Ingen Temee, rejects its white offspring, Botok, after a two day long labor. Images of other camels embracing their young colts pass on the affectionate nature of the camels, which increases the emotional pain depicted as Ingen Temee rejects Botok. The little white colt is in constant hunger as the mother refuses to let him feed, which will cause much sadness among the viewers. However, to the people of Gobi desert the camel has more than affectionate value. The value of the camel is illustrated the use of the camel, as the camel provides transportation, milk, rope, and even toys for children. In essence, the camel is a means of survival. In order to prevent the young colt from dying the family decides to send Dude, a young teen, and his much younger brother, Ugna, on a 50 kilometer journey on camel to return with a violinist in order to hold a old traditional ceremony.

The journey for the violinist turns out to be an eye-boggling adventure for Ugna, as he discovers the wonders of television. Ugna cannot take his eyes off this square piece of technology that he discovered at some close neighbors home, a days camel ride away. When the two brothers continue to their destination Ugna asks Dude what a television would cost. Dude responds, “about 50 sheep, but then you would also need electricity.” This displays the authenticity of the story and the value system by which they live.

Eventually the two boys return from their long journey, which leads the viewers to one of the most amazing events in history where the power of music will carry over to another species. This leaves the viewer wondering over the scientific approach to the world. However, it also brings a warm and poignant feeling that remains within the audience long after the film is over.

The Story of the Weeping Camel is in some aspects a dreary cinematic experience, but it has to be slow and monotonous compared to western living. As mentioned before, very little external stimuli is provided to the people in the film. The only means of communication with the outside world is a battery-operated radio, which does not work through most of the film, as they do not have batteries. In the stillness and the seemingly endless desert the audience will experience a truly genuine culture. This culture sheds some light on our high-technological society, as it probably will make most of the viewers feel a little embarrassed about our daily complaints when the cable does not work, or if electricity is accidentally shut off.

There are a few conditions required for “getting” this movie. You have to understand a few things before getting the jokes. Probably the most important thing is that you’ve seen Boys ‘N The Hood and/or Menace II Society. These two movies contain the majority of the spoofs seen in Don’t Be A Menace… There are also references to Poetic Justice, Juice, and Higher Learning. Without having seen the first two, most people will probably not get the jokes. Secondly, if you’re into the hip hop culture, this movie will be a lot funnier. There’s a lot of play on words from the rap lingo that you won’t get if you haven’t listened to it.

I really enjoyed this movie. It’s a hilarious spoof of gangsta movies and gangsta rap. Keenan Ivory Wayans’ cameos were hilarious. Shawn and Marlon make a great comedy team. It’s just too bad they don’t get more exposure (they’re TV show on WB is hilarious, too). It’s all tongue in cheek fun pointed at the harsher looks at inner city life that we get from movies and music.

If you’re one of those people that hates movies like Naked Gun, Airplane, and Spaceballs, this movie is definitely not for you. Otherwise, pick it up and try not to fall off the couch :)

So many people just hate this film but I found it absolutely hilarious. Like the Scary Movie flicks it helps if you know the source films (Boyz N The Hood etc) fairly well. A lot of the funniest moments come from the deadpan way ludicrous lines are said, eg, of a pretty girl: ‘What’s her name?’ ‘Oh, that’s Dashiki.’ And the way characters refer to ‘the hood’ in inverted commas all the time, as in, ‘I’m leaving ‘the hood’,’ (cue gunshot). Who wouldn’t laugh at the love-making scene where Trey ups the erotic ante by libating Dashiki with kool-aid then melting government-surplus cheese & dripping it like molten wax over her body? Well, a lot of people, apparently. But I laughed out loud a good many times watching this movie. The ‘guilty’ aspect is that it makes it almost impossible to re-watch Boyz N The Hood, Menace II Society etc in a serious manner because so many key scenes and moments are burlesqued in DBAMTSCWDYJITH.

This DVD attempt to cram into about an hour the entire history of North American exploration. Given its aim, I believe it does quite a decent job of doing so. It summarized five hundred years of history and many dozen expeditions and explorers into brief tidbits of information. I don’t think this is a good educational tool, since it would likely be somewhat uninteresting — it does not have very interesting stories, just a stream of information. Rather, this is a good starting point to someone wishing to research North American exploration and would like an intro to the main events and people in its history. Not really something to excite people about history, people seeing this should already be excited.

I popped in this DVD very wary of how I would feel about an old childhood favorite after years of not seeing it. Well, I was pleasantly surprised that the film is still a lot of fun. Yes, a lot of the effects (blue screen, etc.) are unconvincing and show their age, but geeeez, the movie’s almost 40 years old so what can you expect. This was a real stunner in it’s day and Harryhausen’s stop-motion sequences still outshine any boring CGI effect in today’s cookie-cutter movies (just look at the awful recent TV remake with all those cheesy computer effects — there’s no contest!) The skeleton battle is most well-known, but I have a special fondness for Talos which was the first scene that caught my eye as a young kid on Saturday afternoon TV in the late 60’s. Glad to see that “Jason” still has it’s magic (along with some acceptable campiness) and the DVD is a nice presentation (there are some slight flaws to the print materials and grain in some scenes). The Harryhausen interview (with John Landis) is interesting and the original trailer is also included on the DVD.

I’ve reviewed quite a few films featuring the work of special effects artist Ray Harryhausen and found reasons to like them all, but Jason and the Argonauts (1963) features some of his most fantastic effects, and is considered to be one of the greatest fantasy pictures ever made. Would I say it’s the greatest? No, but in terms of influencing many, including a majority of special effects artists in the business today, this film is a cinematic landmark, and deserves to be treated as such. Produced by long time Harryhausen collaborator Charles Schneer (The Valley of Gwangi, The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, Clash of the Titans) and directed by Don Chaffey (One Million Years B.C., Pete’s Dragon), the film stars Todd Armstrong in his biggest role, but not his voice, as that was dubbed over by Tim Turner, a British actor who did a lot of voice over work on film trailers, including the trailer for this film. Also appearing is Nancy Kovack (The Silencers), and a whole bunch of British actors including Gary Raymond (El Cid), Laurence Naismith (The Valley of Gwangi), Niall MacGinnis (Night of the Demon), Jack Gwillim (Patton), Nigel Green (Countess Dracula), and Honor Blackman (Goldfinger), to name a few.

As this fantasy epic begins, we see the plight of Jason as an infant, his father slain and kingdom usurped, as so the seemingly fickle Gods have decided. Jason grows up, returns to re-take the land and peoples that are rightfully his, only to be sent on a quest, by the Gods (geez, who died and made them Gods? Oh yeah…they ARE Gods), to recover a golden fleece, one that would bring peace and prosperity to the troubled land. Only problem is the fleece is across the world, to where no one has sailed before. To meet this goal, Jason has the finest ship built, and gathers the greatest athletes Greece has to offer, and sets out on a perilous journey that involves dangerous waters, mighty bronze titans, a deadly, multi-headed Hydra, an army of skeleton warriors (can seven really be considered an army? Maybe more like a task force…), and treachery within his own ranks, among other things (as if that wasn’t enough). The quest seems an impossible one, but with Jason’s determination, the loyalty of his men (the non-treasonous ones, of course), and even a little help from the Gods themselves, he just may be able to survive and return with the treasure to reclaim what is rightfully his, and bring and end to the tyrant reign that has plagued his lands for the past twenty odd years.

Alright, I will say some of the acting isn’t all that great (actress Kovack seems to be on some kind of depressant, as her performance is about as deadpan as I’ve seen), and some of the non-Harryhausen special effects are extremely noticeable (the matte usage in some scenes stands out a lot more than they probably would have liked), but despite these points, this is really a fun and exciting movie. There are elements of the story missing (the 2000 television CGI-laden version starring Jason London was a bit more inclusive in this respect, but lacked the charm, for me at least, of this one), but the makers of this film did manage to cram a lot into its’ 104 minute running time, and the capable direction kept the story moving along at a rousing pace, rarely slowing down, and keeping my interest. I did enjoy the sets (especially those on Mount Olympus, and I have to say, Honor Blackman makes for one sexy Goddess, playing Hera, Zeus’ wife…hotchie momma!) and the location shots where wonderful, adding a lot to the story. The Argo (the boat that carried Jason and his crew, hence the term `Argonauts’) was suitable, although that figurehead of Hera (she was one of the Gods assisting Jason) freaked me out, especially with the opening an closing of its’ eyelids. And I can’t review this film without mentioning the work of legendary Hollywood composer Bernard Herrmann (Citizen Kane, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Psycho, Taxi Driver)…well, I mentioned him…but seriously, it’s pretty rare to find a composer as `in tune’ with the material he’s working with as Herrmann (think how different Psycho would be without its’ frightening score). The best parts of the film, by far, are the stop-motion effects by Harryhausen. What makes his work so good, in my opinion, is not only his eye for meticulous detail (it would often take months to produce a 3 or 4 minute on screen segment of stop-motion work), but also his ability to create the appropriate movements for the characters he was presenting. An example within the context of the film is Talos, the bronze titan, compared to, say, the winged harpies. The character of Talos moved exactly how you would expect a giant made of bronze to move, rigid, lumbering, and generally slow, compared to the very fluid and animated movements of the winged harpies, or even the multi-headed Hydra creature. It’s the supposition of how the creatures would move, infused with the created models that set Harryhausen apart from his peers, and made him a legend in his own time, influencing so many others that came after him. It’s pretty rare to see stop-motion work in major films nowadays, as it’s been replaced with computer generated images (which is probably cheaper and less time consuming, but can often appear just as unrealistic as lesser stop-motion work).

The picture looks pretty good on this DVD, and is available in both widescreen (1.85:1) and full screen pan and scan formats. The audio, Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono, is relatively clear throughout. Special features include subtitles (English, French, and Spanish), the original theatrical trailer, short production notes inside the case, and a lengthy interview with Ray Harryhausen conducted by John Landis, featuring clips, still photos, and even a prop or two from the films.
