I almost missed seeing this wonderful little film on the big screen; I caught the last showing of the last day in our local art-house theater. I can’t believe I almost robbed myself of the pleasure of seeing “Bend it Like Beckham”, quite honestly my favorite movie to come out this year so far. It has action, romance, comedy, drama, lots of color and music and in the end a great message about acceptance and following your dreams. What more could you want?

Parminder Nagra stars as Jess, a Londoner of Indian descent who has loved playing soccer (or football, to the rest of the world) all her life. She lives and breathes her sport, so much so that every night she tells all her hopes and dreams to a giant poster of British soccer phenom David Beckham that hangs above her bead. Her parents, though, are less than approving, and when Jess uncovers a female soccer team that is willing to let her play in “real matches” she must weigh fulfilling her dreams against tearing her family apart. There is also the matter of her gorgeous Irish coach (Jonathan Rhys-Myers) and her new best friend (Keira Knightly); two girls and one cute guy can sometimes cause problems.

The script is more deeply layered than you might expect; I especially liked the interaction between Jess and her parents. Jess’ mom is horrified by her daughter’s passion because she feels nice Indian girls should be thinking of marriage and not “running around half naked in front of men”, but her father for a subtler reason; he still remembers when he came to England and was not allowed to play cricket because of his race. He cannot bear the idea of sport breaking Jess’ heart too.

The supporting cast is uniformly great; with standouts being Juliet Stevenson as the mother of Jess’ new friend (”There is a reason Sporty Spice is the only one without a boyfriend!”) and Jonathan Rhys-Myers as the coach. Rhys-Myers, in fact, spends what screen time he has looking incredibly sexy and practically daring the audience to call him on his Irish accent. Everyone else plays their roles to perfection and a good time is had by all, including the audience. Highly recommended!

GRADE: A-

What brilliant film! I absolutely adored it! Anyone who dismisses this film as a “soccer flick” definitely needs to give it a second look. Despite it’s soccer-themed title, “Bend It Like Beckham” is a fabulous and heart-warming story about family, traditions, friendship, love, fulfilling your dreams, and – yes – soccer (or football to non-US audiences).

In the center of the story is Jessminder Bhamra (Parminder Nagra), a young Indian girl living in England who desperately wants to be a football (soccer) player. On the one hand, she is incredibly talented, but on the other, she has very traditional parents who believe that Jess should (a) go to university, (b) become a solicitor, and (c) marry a nice Indian boy. But Jess has dreams of her own and when she is approached by Jules Paxton (Keira Knightley) while playing soccer with the boys at a local park, she secretly joins Jules’ local all-girls “football” team. Jules and Jess become close friends but conflicts arise when both girls fall for the same boy – their coach Joe (the handsome Jonathan Rhys-Meyers).

There are many, many highlights to this film. First of all, it is incredibly entertaining and funny. There are definitely parallels to “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” as Jess’ family life is thrown into chaos as they plan for her sister Pinky’s “big fat Indian wedding” (complete with quirky, colorful relatives and friends). Secondly, it has a very talented cast led by newcomer Parminder Nagra (who is wonderful and earnest as the young woman in conflict between her dreams and her family traditions), the beautiful Keira Knightley (who will soon become a household name once “The Pirates of the Caribbean” opens this summer), handsome heartthrob Jonathan Rhys-Meyers (rumored to be in the running to be the next James Bond), the hilarious Juliet Stevenson (as Jules’ prissy mom who is appalled that her daughter would rather play sports than go shopping with her) and Shaheen Khan (as Jess’ no-nonsense mom who is equally appalled that her daughter would rather play sports than learn the finer art of Indian cooking). Thirdly, the production values, script and acting are top-notch, bringing to mind similarly quirky, enjoyable coming-of-age and feel-good films like “Muriel’s Wedding” and “Princess Diaries.”

I honestly cannot find fault with this film. I came into the theater without any pre-conceived expectations and came out loving it and wanting to see it again! This movie is definitely on my DVD must-have list. I can’t wait to own it so that I can watch it again and again. Anglophiles, soccer fans and anyone who enjoys top-notch romantic comedies must see this movie. It is a film that crosses cultural boundaries and will make you smile and laugh from beginning to end. What a gem!

All right.

With tongue firmly in cheek, let me say that the other reviewers of this movie have got it all wrong. “The Eiger Sanction” has got to be one of the all-time great “guy” films (I refer you to the “Big Damn Book of Sheer Manliness” here on Amazon.com for more information on those two). Yes, for Saturday-night-with-the-boys viewing, this is one of the classics. Here are ten reasons why:

1. Clint the Glint…need I say more?

2. Incredibly realistic mountain-climbing footage, from Southern Utah to the Swiss Alps, all shot on location, with none of the ridiculous fakery found in farces such as “Cliffhanger”.

3. A plot that makes James Bond seem believable, starting with a combination art expert/mountain climber/CIA assassin and going forward from there.

4. Fantastic scenery shots, including George Kennedy and Clint on top of a sandstone pinnacle (I’m sure George really climbed it…yeah, right).

5. A cool resort compound (actually filmed at the lodge in Zion National Park, Utah).

6. Well-timed 70s nudity (in other words, totally unnecessary).

7. An albino (!) “establishment” guy, (CIA leader) and his wonderfully despicable sidekick, just waiting for Clint to kick around.

8. Astounding political incorrectness, including a character named “Jemimah Brown”, another one known simply as “Buns”, and much, much more.

9. Fantastically quotable manly lines, for example “Assassins get assassinated, and that ain’t in my game plan”, or “There’s a twenty on the dresser by the bed”, etc., etc., etc.

10. Clint even glints at a little dog…really!

I could go on and on.

All kidding aside, I love this movie! Just don’t plan on taking it too seriously.

As a thriller, the ‘Eiger Sanction’ is just ok. It is a pretty faithful adaptation of Trevanian’s bestseller from 1972. It stars Clint Eastwood as Dr. Johnathan Hemlock — an ex-climber now art professor who does occasional asassinations for a secret US agency to pay for his art collection. He takes on one last job to pay for a Pissaro he desperately wants; but it requires that he get out his old climbing boots. He’ll have to do the job while climbing the north face of the Eiger — certainly one of the most dangerous climbs in the world.

I’m not completely sure of this, but I believe that this movie was also Clint Eastwood’s directorial debut. He not only stars in it, but he produced and directed it as well!

Ah, the glorious 70’s! The clothing, the hairstyles, the attitudes towards women, etc. It is quite fun to watch and chuckle at now. Hemlock is a kind of James Bond-ian super hero. Remarkably gifted not only at killing bad guys but also at bedding beautiful women, enjoying fine wine and food, and being an art expert. The story ofen requires you to suspend your sense of reality and to have a bit of a sense of humor. If you enjoy these kinds of thrillers, you’ll definitely enjoy this one.

What sets this movie apart for me is the many climbing sequences! I am an avid climber and I know of no other ‘Hollywood’ movie that does as good a job as this one at showing real mountain climbing. The climbing scenes in the ‘Eiger Sanction’ are breathtaking and quite realistic. The scenes on the Eiger were actually filmed on location on the Eiger Nordwand itself! Remarkable! Apparently Clint is/was a bit of a climber himself, and took great pains to portray the climbing in as realistic a light as possible. Three cheers for Clint! On a sad note, one of the stuntmen/riggers was killed while filming the scenes on the Eiger.

Most other mass-market climbing films completely ruin the climbing scenes to make them more dramatic or exciting (Vertical Limit, Cliffhanger, K2, etc.); or are documentaries trying to cash in on the current Everest fever (and are more interested in the ‘death zone’ aspect of high altitude climbing than actually showing real climbing).

Bottom line for me: I bought this VHS for its depiction of the climbing more than the story line. However, it’s also a pretty decent thriller as well as a fun trip back to the early 70’s.

“Open Season” is the coming-of-age story of a very unlikely friendship. Boog (Voice by Martin Lawrence), the Bear, has lived a very sheltered life in the garage of Beth, the game ranger who rescued him. Elliott (voice by Ashton Kutcher), the mule deer, has had a very bad day. He’s just gotten expelled from his pack by the Alpha Buck, gotten hit by a truck, lost an antler and ended up strapped to the hood of an insane hunter’s truck.

When Boog saves Elliott’s life, Elliott comes to join him in his garage haven–and they end up on a night on the town that gets Boog sent to the wilderness earlier than his game-ranger Mom would have preferred–and sadly, at the beginning of “Open Season.”

To stay safe, the two must band together–and along the way, they learn a lot about friendship and teamwork. This is a great lesson film for kids as well as having some wonderful moments for adults, too.

Plus, the making of videos are fascinating. Viewers have the chance to learn about how animation is drawn and how the directors help bring the voices to life.

I’ve had my Xbox HD-DVD player for 6 months and love it – hooked on HD movies. I was frustrated at not being able to get all the High Def movies available so I broke down and got the 100 dollar discounted PS3 as soon as the price break hit. For my first Blu-ray movie I selected Open Season, hoping I had made a good choice and felt comforted by the quality reviews I read on here (Amazon).

Sure enough the reviews were true the picture is amazing in 1080P High Def. The movie was more entertaining than I expected. With the quality of the picture and the decent animation story you certainly won’t regret your purchase. I wasn’t blown away by the uncompressed audio, but it also didn’t disappoint – just didn’t really stand out where as the picture certainly did.

I dunno if it’s because this is an animated movie, but I can say that this is the best quality High Def content I’ve seen to date, better picture than the HD-DVD movies I’ve seen.

This series was truly brilliant, cut short by the WB. Ironically, the WB continues to show mediocre shows while canceling ones such as this. It makes you wonder who the WB’s target audience is.

The series was ahead of its time … on the wrong network, unfortunately. Were it a new series now, it might have been pitched to Comedy Central or Cartoon Network (Adult Swim) and survived not only to _finish_ the first season but for subsequent seasons as well.

The episodes have a slightly higher replay value than most series’, a lot of the humor and in fact, some of the best humor is very subtle – such as the No Smoking sign in Jim’s office. Moreover, the question everyone always asks is finally answered in the commentary, I am referring of course to the reason all of the characters appear to have Jaundice and yellow teeth. ;)

For ~$20, the two-disc set is well worth it – it would make a great stocking stuffer for anyone with a Kevin or Andy character in his or her own life. :)

I love Mission Hill, however this DVD set is not as great as the version you see on Adult Swim, a lot of the music is edited out and replaced and a scene is cut out on one of the episodes “Kevin Finds Love (or Hot for Weirdie)” and even worse, the voice audio on one of the episodes “Andy and Kevin Make a Friend (or One Bang for Two Brothers)” is so quiet that you have to turn the TV up all the way to hear it and it makes all the other sounds so loud that it hurts your ears. If you really love Mission Hill, try recording the series onto DVD for yourself when it airs on Adult Swim, at least the episodes there are not edited and the episode with the bad voice track audio on the DVD set is not messed up on the original airing. If you don’t have a DVD recorder then for the sake of the episode “Andy and Kevin Make a Friend (or One Bang for Two Brothers)” I would at least record it onto VHS so you can hear it perfectly without having to turn the volume up all the way. The bonus features are pretty cool though but for me that the only good thing. While the episodes are still good on this, if you don’t mind changes to music then go for this set, however as I said for one of the episode, damaged voice audio so be careful.

As far as acting, risks and film style – this should have won that year but at least it got submitted for the Academy (wrongly overlooked – probably due to content). A suspenseful tale that follows the lead woman through flashbacks and present time, with an editing style that makes the film a stand-out in storytelling. Xenia Rappaport convinced me beyond any doubt of her skill level, and even when you watch the supplemental documentary, she exudes a certain professionalism that warrants attention. A strong R rating of a film about retribution, loss, prostitution in the worst way, and an ending I did not see coming (considering all that had happened).

The DVD quality is excellent, the sound mixed perfectly for what was being asked, and the supplemental feature contains just the right amount of background material and non-cheesy interviews. Hope this does not get overlooked again.

Giuseppe Tornatore is a genius, this movie is a gem. Buy it and keep it in your collection. Superb acting, incredible story of human love and desperation. I cannot believe this movie did not win any Oscars.

Yes, the special effects are very much of the 1950s, but those effects are fun to watch–and unlike most other 1950s sci-fi/horror films, THEM! has a lot more going for it than special effects alone: sharp and aggressive performances, a cast of truly memorable supporting actors, a witty and intelligent script, and best of all (unlike many other films of its era) a story that can still generate plenty of suspense.

The grand-daddy of all mutant-monster movies, THEM! concerns a colony of A-Bomb-created giant ants that have lurked in the desert unnoticed until the colony begins to divide. When newborn queen ants take flight, the world is in danger–particularly Los Angeles, where a nest establishes itself in the city’s largely forgotten storm drains. Edmund Gwynne and Joan Weldon give strong performances as the father-daughter scientific team sent from Washington to investigate, and James Whitmore and James Arness give able support as the action-heros of the piece. Fess Parker is also very effective in a small supporting role.

The real winner in the film, however, are the clever cinematography and sound effects that build tremendous suspense, particularly when investigators must enter the desert ant nest and later track the ants to their Los Angeles lair. These scenes possess a claustrophobic feel not seen again in any sci-fi/horror flick until ALIEN. Without graphic gore but more than a few serious thrills, THEM! is a film the whole family can enjoy.

In the 1950’s the world was testing A-bombs, Hydrogen Bombs, strange results were beginning to appear & Hollywoods imagination was added to the theories. The results a series of movies about radioactive mutated creatures. The first was “THEM”.

“THEM” (1954) is a landmark movie about giant radiation-mutated ants that gets better with age and boasts remarkable, Academy Award-nominated special effects.

Summary: Our story begins in a New Mexico desert with a shocked wandering child, destroyed general store & battered corpse full of enough formic acid to kill 20 men. The search begins to find & destroy these menacing insects. The giant mutated ants are on the move and the climatic battle is in over 700 miles of Los Angeles sewers.

An ALL-STAR cast led by James Whitmore, James Arness and Edmund Gwenn.

Special Features include; Behind the Scenes Archive footage, Montage & Operation on the Giant Ants, & film trailer.

This was the first and probably the best movie featuring the worlds & Hollywoods take on the possible results of radioactive mutation.

“THEM” in a great Black & White Standard version (Original theatrical exhibition) digitally restored presenting a very exceptional picture & sound. This sci-fi classic is worth the price of addmission so get out the popcorn and ENJOY!!

Where the Red Fern Grows Review By Amelia Solano, period 6

Movies that are based on books usually have to leave out or change scenes or characters. For the readers of the book leaving out the smallest character, or changing the way somebody dresses could make them leave the theatre very annoyed. Where the Red fern Grows, being a novel based movie, had many scenes and characters left out. The movie itself was good, but it was not true to the book.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Where the Red Fern Grows! Click Here

Where the Red Fern Grows did have take out and change many characters for the movie to be a reasonable length. Sammy the cat was not included but that is understandable, for he did not have a very important role in the book. The one thing that annoyed me and many other readers most was the change in the dogs. Old Dan and Little Ann, Billy’s dogs, were to have shared a special bond with Billy and have distinctive personalities. Old Dan being aggressive and Little Ann being clever were some traits that I did not see in his movie. The two dogs wouldn’t hunt with any other person but Billy, and there was a very strong connection between him and his dogs. I do not feel that the dogs in this movie really cared for Billy and they were just ordinary dogs that knew how to kill raccoons.

In every book there are a few scenes that are added to give a certain effect, or exaggerate a characters feeling. Naturally, directors leave these scenes out to make that movie enjoyable rather that boring. Directors might change scenes too to help with the story line. But the change in his movie did not really help the story line at all. At the end of the big coon-hunting tournament Billy is supposed to win first prize. In this movie somebody else wins, but gives Billy the trophy and the prize money. Billy was supposed to have won but the directors probably left it out because it would be too obvious. To me that is not a strong enough reason.

I know that movies have to change the story a little but this movie changed it a little too much for my liking. If you are considering watching this movie please rent it, for you shouldn’t waste your money on a movie you will see once and then forget about.

This wonderful book deserves much more than this movie. I was hoping for so much more, especially from Disney. It seemd to me that it was made hastily and on a tight budget…Coleman and Ned Beatty (sp?) did their part, but Dave Matthews? This story did not deserve to have an actor if his inability playing the role of the young man’s father. As a young man who read this book over and over, and for a Father who was excited about having his 6 year old son watch this movie with him, I am very, very dissapointed.

Slayer (Kevin VanHook, 2006)

The most intriguing thing about Slayer is that it contains the least convincing fight scene since Jesus Christ, Vampire Hunter. When that’s the best thing you can say about a movie, it’s pretty bad.

I realize that most of the top cast in here are pretty well-known for being bad actors. But was Lynda Carter always this awful, or does she just turn in the worst performance of her career? I don’t think I’ve seen her in anything but commercials for twenty-five years or so, so I really can’t remember. The horrible thing is that the rest of the cast is so bad that Carter’s Razzy-worthy performance is about par for the course. In fact, the majority of this cast is so bad that they almost make the worthless Casper van Dien look good. Kevin Grevioux may actually be the worst actor I have ever seen in a movie. He desperately wants to be Ken Foree. He fails in every respect.

As for what passes for a plot in this farce: an army unit, headed by Hawk (van Dien) and Grieves (Grevioux), somewhere in the remote jungles of South America, is attacked by a band of vampires– ninja vampires, no less– who aren’t afraid of daylight. (Daywalking is the only change to traditional vampire lore here, despite one vampire’s assertion during the film that the “fairy tales” got almost nothing right.) Six months later, nearby villages are being raided, and the army’s sending in fresh troops. Grieves is already in South America, and Hawk is on the next boat. You know what happens.

About the only reason to watch this movie is that Danny Trejo has a small role in it, and is his usual self. Otherwise, this movie is trite, badly-acted, badly-scripted, with little attention paid to such things as cinematography, set design, or costuming. In other words, there’s absolutely nothing of substance to recommend here. I’m giving it half a star because it’s not overtly offensive, but if you do see it, you’ll end up thinking, “there’s two hours of my life I’ll never get back.” (half)

As a circus buff, I can’t imagine anybody BUT C.B. De Mille having the scope of vision to do justice to a show deliberately created to be so big that one person simply can’t take it all in, and the stories and subplots that abound under the biggest of the Big Tops. That said, I do have to wonder what on earth the Academy was thinking when they voted TGSOE the Oscar as Best Picture of 1952. That year saw the release of High Noon, Ivanhoe, The Quiet Man and Singin’ In The Rain, any one of which could lay better claim to the title of Best Picture in terms of writing, plot and cinematography. Why did TGSOE win the Oscar?

I believe it is because the film was seen as a “last chance” vote for De Mille; particularly ironic given that C.B. received the Thalberg that year as well, and for the same reason: for creating and producing consistently high-quality movies. De Mille’s best work was decades behind him when he filmed the 1951 edition of the Ringling Brothers – Barnum & Bailey Circus. The subplots, purple prose and some of the situations have more in common with the silent cinema spectacles for which De Mille is justly famed than they do with the realities of running a three-ring railroad circus plus midway under canvas on the road for an 8-month season.

One subplot almost derailed the production, in fact. From its beginnings, Ringling Brothers was renowned for running a totally honest show. Considering that at one point Ringling had been nicknamed ‘the Sunday-School Show’ for its total intolerance of grifters, pickpockets and thieves, the subplot involving a dishonest rival circus owner planting a team of con men on the show to run the midway’s games of chance was about as welcome to the circus’s management as a skunk at a picnic. There were rows between De Mille, Art Concello (Ringling’s Director of Performance) and John Ringling North, the show’s owner, over this plot until C.B. convinced them he needed the plot line to set up the climactic train wreck at the end of the movie. (Ringling’s management didn’t like THAT much either, because RB&BB hadn’t had a train wreck since 1892!) However, the show extended itself even beyond their usual standard to accommodate the filming (Concello, a famous aerialist in his time, even gaffed The Great Sebastian’s fall for De Mille) and despite the tensions engendered by the needs of two different forms of entertainment (there is a legend that C.B. got a royal chewing-out from Concello for moving the lighting around without asking so he could film better, which movement nearly caused a trapeze artist to fall because he couldn’t see his catcher), the principal photgraphy was a marvelous chronicle of circus life, in and out of the ring.

The photography, in fact, is what makes The Greatest Show On Earth such an important picture. De Mille succeeded in capturing on film a way of life that even then was starting to die; John Ringling North would strike the Big Top for good midway through the 1956 season and convert his circus into an ‘arena show.’ Forget the corny subplots involving Brad Braden, Holly, Buttons the Clown and The Great Sebastian. Watch this movie in a documentary frame of mind and you will realize not just how important the circus used to be back before television brought the world into your living room, but the sense of wonder that has been lost from our faster-paced, wider-ranging lives. Glory in the music as well, much of it written for the movie or the 1951 Edition; Victor Young’s “The Greatest Show On Earth March” instantly sets the circus scene just as well as Fucik’s “Entry of the Gladiators” ever has. Remember that all the acts are doing their thing in real time, not with the help of a green screen and CGI; those are real people really risking their necks out there! (Oh yes: and that really IS Betty Hutton working on the single bar above Ring One. She was doubled for the sequences on the flying trapeze, but she learned and performed her own routines on the single bar. There is even an extant film clip of her being presented with an award from Photoplay Magazine by C.B. De Mille, who had to ride up on a camera crane to give it to her while she was rehearsing under the Big Top!)

We owe the great Cecil B. De Mille many thanks for the documenting of The Greatest Show On Earth at its peak. I personally believe this movie should rank high on the AFI 100 Greatest Movies List. However, as I’ve said, the best picture of 1952 it isn’t, not by a long shot.

Even so, buy the DVD anyway and go to the circus again… and again… and again! “Bring the young’uns! Bring the old folks! Come again!”

It almost seems that “The Greatest Show on Earth” would be more highly respected today if it had not won the Best Picture Oscar in 1952; reviewers often tend to compare its value to that of other films released the same year (especially “The Quiet Man”, which won Best Director for John Ford and “Singin’ in the Rain” which failed to secure a Best Picture nomination at all), and find TGSOE lacking. Such criticism is patently unfair. After all, whether it won as a fluke because the other nominees split the vote, or whether the Academy voters simply went for it in a big way, it isn’t TGSOE’s fault that it emerged the big winner – blame the Academy! And Oscar considerations aside, it’s undeniable that TGSOE is exactly what its producers and director Cecil B. DeMille intended it to be: a great big, gaudy, colorful, lavish example of traditional storytelling and old-fashioned entertainment that would delight and thrill audiences while raking in piles of money at the box-office. On those terms, the film was – and still is – a stupendous success.

Certainly the movie features the cast of a lifetime interacting with actual circus personnel in this early “Circus of the Stars”. In addition to top-billed Betty Hutton and Cornel Wilde (who actually performed many of their own acrobatic stunts), the players include Charlton Heston; Gloria Grahame; Dorothy Lamour; legendary clown Emmett Kelly; DeMille regulars Henry Wilcoxon and Julia Faye; Lyle Bettger; Lawrence Tierney; and, in a meaty supporting role, James Stewart. Countless big names also make cameo appearances or pop up in crowd scenes: watch for Bing Crosby and Bob Hope in the stands while “Road” series co-star Dorothy Lamour is singing; Edmond O’Brien; Hopalong Cassidy; and many more. The slim plot, concerning the behind-the-scenes operations of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus, is secondary to the spectacle of the performers, animals, and roustabouts, but DeMille nonetheless throws in some torrid romance, a dash of mystery, a touch of tragedy … and a mammoth train wreck! And all this was filmed in eye-popping three-strip Technicolor, making it a visual feast for the eyes.

The Paramount DVD offers a gorgeous film-to-video transfer that is wonderful to behold. The film is presented in its original “full-screen” aspect ratio (the widescreen CinemaScope process wouldn’t make its debut for another year), and looks and sounds terrific. Highly recommended to those who enjoy star-filled extravaganzas and “old-fashioned” epic storytelling; anyone who ever dreamed of running away from home and joining the circus (and didn’t most of us?) will especially enjoy this rousing entertainment.

Set in post-World War II Ireland, namely the late 1940’s and late 50’s, Circle Of Friends tells of three girls, Eve, who was raised in a convent because her parents died, the stunning Nan Mahon, and the plain but pleasant and charming Benny Hogan, who’s father is the local tailor. She narrates the film from time to time, and Minnie Driver’s charming voice aids in what’s quite a charming little movie about being sure of and true to oneself despite changes.

The three go to the college in Dublin, attend classes, and go back on the 10 past 6 bus to the village. In an anthropology class, she learns of an obscure tribe and their culture, one of which is that men and women mingle freely without shame or guilt, a contrast to the repressive Catholic upbringing the girls have. But this learning also parallels her meeting Jack Foley, a handsome blonde with blue eyes and a nice smile. She’s quite taken when he asks her out to a dance, only to be gradually disillusioned when he doesn’t as time goes on. When he finally does ask her, she tells him that she doesn’t like being messed about, but further that despite being a rhinoceros, a reference to her perceived bigness, she has a thin skin. She is heartened that he feels comfortable talking to her honestly. He sees that she’s all there, more grounded, sure of herself. In contrast, Jack wants to play rugby but is going for the medical program because of his father’s wishes and despite the fact that he faints at the sight of blood. Through her interactions, she learns that she is capable of being loved and to love, but she never goes all the way. Jack indeed is a preferable pick from the oily Sean Walsh, an employee of Mr. Hogan’s shop who aspires to be a partner, but also wants to marry Benny. It’s further his dream to run the shop when Mr. Hogan retires. However, Benny is quite turned off by Sean, much to her parents’ disappointment. This learning at school is making her self-aware, and she’s made up her mind who she wants to marry, should she do so. What’s the point of learning all that knowledge, only to go back to her little village and be a good little wife, something also explored in the later Mona Lisa Smile.

The divide between Protestants and Catholics is seen here in the form of Simon Westward, a member of the landowning family who wants to marry the right girl. That is what Nan is looking for, a real man, seeing her peers as just boys, as tryouts. Things don’t go the way she plans, leading her to disrupt Benny and Jack.

It’s easy to see why Minnie Driver became a star. As the shy, hopeful, intelligent, and sensitive Benny, she’s a fresh face. And she’s unique with that slightly wide face of hers, She is mostly seen without much makeup, and she still looks wonderful, and with that accent and beaming countenance, totally believable as a daughter of the Emerald Isle. I’d definitely go for someone like her. Geraldine O’Rawe lends strong support as Eve, who turns out to be more loyal and true to Benny. Chris O’Donnell also gets a thumbs up as Jack, a likeable enough person, less sure of himself, well-meaning, but with a few failings.

As in all the other films I’ve seen him in, Alan Cumming (Sean) is another slimy, lizard-like, fawning toadie (Titus, Spiceworld, Eyes Wide Shut). He is a bit pathetic with his greasy black hair and sickly smile, but he’s a character to be reviled as time goes on.

With a nice closing song, “You’re The One,” sung by Maire Brennan and Shane McGowan, Circle Of Friends is a film that doesn’t go for the predictable drama of most romance movies. No, this is a movie that’s all there.

An endearing, Oscar worthy performance by Minnie Driver highlights “Circle of Friends,” a poignant story of friendship, love and loyalty, set in 1957 Ireland, directed by Pat O’Connor. Driver stars as Bernadette “Benny” Hogan, a sensitive, somewhat self-conscious young lady (she sees herself as plain and over-weight), about to enter the University of Dublin, along with her two, life-long friends, Eve (Geraldine O’Rawe), and Nan (Saffron Burrows). At school she meets rugby star and med student Jack Foley (Chris O’Donnell), and falls in love with him; and, once he gets to know her, (and after a somewhat tenuous beginning), Jack realizes that he loves Benny, as well. Conflict intervenes upon their romance, however, and complications ensue when circumstances force them into a prolonged separation. Benny’s home is a bus ride away from Dublin, and it becomes necessary for her to stay for awhile and help with the family store. Ultimately, it leads to an incident involving Jack and Nan, when Jack becomes unwittingly drawn into a particularly sensitive and unpleasant situation which has recently arisen between Nan and her wealthy suitor, Simon Westward (Colin Firth). Driver is the real story here, though, as she gives an incredibly touching performance that so adeptly conveys Benny’s sensitivities; she is Benny from the inside out, wearing her heart on her sleeve and so vulnerable to the pain that life can seemingly inflict at will. She is so winsome, and accessible, that it enables you to share her joy and feel her pain; all due to Driver’s incredible ability to make such an absolute emotional connection between her Benny and the audience. And having the capacity to evoke such empathy underscores what a truly gifted actress Driver is. As Jack, Chris O’Donnell gives one of his finest performances to date, as well. He manages to delve beneath the surface to tap Jack’s indecisiveness, his self-confidence tinged with doubt, while fleshing out the moral aptitude which defines him, and it’s reassuring to know that there’s so much more to him than being the star jock of the rugby team, because Benny deserves more than that. The audience’s identification with Benny is so strong that her endeavors must be rewarded with a man worthy of her affection; for Jack to be any less than he is would be unacceptable and unsatisfying. The wonderful supporting cast includes Alan Cumming (Sean), Mick Lally (Dan Hogan), Ciaran Hinds (Professor Flynn), John Kavanagh (Brian Mahon) and Britta Smith (Mrs. Hogan). Superbly acted and well directed, “Circle of Friends” is a captivating, memorable film, visually attractive and complimented by an engaging soundtrack of lilting, Irish melodies, and Benny is a young woman you’ll take into your heart and keep there; for she is unforgettable. This is one of those rare films that penetrates the soul and takes a real look at the human condition, and how fragile at times it can be. It will make you think; but above all, it will make you feel.
