I know this world well–flew from Nellis for 3 years against all of these aircraft, targets, and all through this airspace. Overall, I think this documentary does what they set out to do, and I think it tells a good, but overly spectacular story of Red Flag.

There is no doubt that this film is filled with CGI aircraft effects, rigged explosions, questionable flying tactics, and conversation/terminology that you just don’t hear in a real training battle. I thought I would offer up the “why.” Much like Top Gun, movie producers quickly learned that the “real thing” doesn’t make for very engaging movie material. The real thing includes spread out formations, intense radar work, and shooting long range missiles from 30,000 feet, often without ever seeing the bandit with your own eyeballs. None of this shows too well on the big screen, so they have to “juice it up” by bringing all of the aircraft together into the same video frame, move the fight down to treetop level to convey the speed, and throw in a bunch of aileron rolls because they look cool (even though they don’t make the guy behind you spit out in front of you). The CGI fills in the gaps where the AF wouldn’t fly the requested maneuvers due to safety reasons.

As for the rigged explosions, there are a couple of reasons for this. The first is that the directors/producers wanted a “from the target” view of the bombs and bullets hitting, which I must say came out really cool. To film that actual aircraft’s ordnance hitting the target would have meant losing their camera and the film in the course of the explosion. The other thing is that the rigged explosings can be crafted to be especially “fiery” whereas real world bombs look like gray, soot-filled explosions and don’t cut the mustard for the Hollywood types.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Fighter Pilot: Operation Red Flag! Click Here

The last thing that really varies from the real battle is the communications between pilots. To put it simply, it they were to use real terminology, only other military pilots that knew the lingo would be able to follow the action. The target audience would be totally lost. So they toss in some of the lingo, and then typically have the pilot “explain it” in english, all in the same radio call.

Does any of the above wreck the movie? Only if you’re really familiar with the way it really happens. My biggest complaint is that the CGI additions to the dogfight look fake. On the other hand, they look a lot better than they did in Air Force One, which I’m sure had a lot bigger special effects budget. For whatever reason, the CG folks just haven’t figured out tactical aviation yet, so I’d rather them just show me the real thing, even if it isn’t quite as spectacular.

A lot of the reviews state poor acting, poor CGI graphics, etc. For anyone that has not seen this before, this is not a hollywood movie. This is an actual account of Operation Red Flag. No actors, no special computer animations, other than those used by the wonderful men and women of the Air Force for flight review, as demonstrated in the video. This is a true tribute to the men and women who put everything on the line so that we can whine about “poor CGI graphics” or “bad acting”. This movie was designed as an insight into the main function of Nellis AFB and into the lives of USAF aviators and ground crew members for people like me who can’t serve there country, but desparately want to. Enjoy the show for what it is.

The Curious Case of Benjamim Button is by no means a feel-good movie. In fact upon watching it, I felt depressed even the next day just thinking about it. People may confuse this for a love story but to me the film clearly symbolizes death. The love aspect is certainly present, though it is not the center of attention here.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Curious Case of Benjamin Button! Click Here

Brad Pitt stars as Benjamin Button, a man who essentially ages backwards. When he is born, his own father attempts to drown him before a sudden change of heart has him leaving the swaddled and very whithered newborn upon the steps of an elderly home. There he is found by Queenie, played to motherly perfection by Taraji P. Henson. She sees past the deformity and oddity and loves him immediately.

Instead of dying, as a doctor predicted, Benjamin actually begins to age backwards. He appears as a very old man and slowly grows younger, but only in body. His mind seems to function as a typical human’s mind. He learns, and dreams and experiences. This basically sets up the magnificent story and from then on, you are taken from country to country, from one decade, to another and it is just superb to witness.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Curious Case of Benjamin Button! Click Here

The acting is fantastic all around. Brad Pitt does an outstanding job, portraying both the old Benjamin as well as his younger counterpart. Cate Blanchett as his childhood friend/love interest is also a joy to watch. She can do no wrong, she is simply stunning. For such a short part, Tilda Swinton surely makes the most of it. Her tale and part with Benjamin in Russia is just stunning. There is also the talented Julia Ormond, who has a bigger part to play in the tale than we may realise at first.

The most impressive aspect of the film is the flawless visual effects. Just flawless. You have never seen aging/deaging done like this. There is a scene, towards the end, with Benjamin and Daisy (Blanchett) that had my jaw dropping. It was like looking back in time. I can’t describe how utterly impressed I was. The cinematography, the sad musical score, the costumes, just every little minute detail is just so impressive and authentic.

I have heard grumbles from people who compare it to Forrest Gump. What? How? There should not be any comparing the two films-or the two characters. Gump was a slow and mostly ignorant person who fell into unbelievable situations. Button clearly chooses his own paths, though it may not seem it, at the beginning. It irritates me how someone can make such a comparison.

This is a long film, nearly three hours, though with the plot and subject matter, it makes sense and really, it is such a beautiful film, you hardly notice the passing of time. Like I mentioned, it will leave you feeling blue but that does not diminish from the fact this is one of the better newer films out there now, and one that people will remember in the future.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button has such a high concept that some people were thrown off. Even major critics like Roger Ebert bashed the film as a whole based only upon his thought that the concept made it a film that no one could ever relate to. I wholeheartedly disagree, and am a little disappointed that after so many years of reading Ebert’s reviews, that he’s limiting his scope by writing off concepts that, to him, just can’t work, especially when this film makes its concept work so brilliantly. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a brooding, sweepingly epic tale about–no surprises here–Benjamin Button, who was born as an old man and will age backwards until he is once again an infant. While this is certainly never the case in life, the unusualness of it even more poignant, because it still does, in a way, mirror real life. When Benjamin Button becomes a boy after years of “growing down,” he will begin to lose his memories the same way an elderly man with Alzheimer’s would. Truthfully, it is a high concept that perhaps would have been one of those “huge idea, not so much story” films in different hands, but screenwriter Eric Roth and director David Fincher made a film that transcends even this looming premise.

The movie has a sort of Burtonesque whimsy, though it is textured in a way that none of his films are. The film is almost three hours long, and it’s such a busy three hours that it feels more like four. There is a framing story, in which a dying woman and her daughter read the diary of Benjamin. These may be considered the weakest parts of the story, but it also comes together nicely in the end. All of the various characters that Benjamin meets along the way are so interesting and so well thought out. There’s a man who gets struck by lightning seven times (we see six of these through hilarious flashbacks), a woman who wants to break a swimming record but is limited by her age, a drunken captain who opens up his world to carnal pleasures, and a whole lot of other characters who you will fall in love with over the course of the film. Many people die, because death–one way (old age) or the other (youth)–is sort of the whole point behind this film. People come into your life and one way or another, they leave. And they leave an imprint. The film is such a weird way to tackle the premise but it’s so deliciously inventive and brilliantly made that its weirdness plays a central role in its overall greatness.

One of the better movies of 2008, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a universally enjoyable film that I suspect it will be even better to watch on DVD when one can take a bit of a break between scenes. The length, and the war scene, will definitely lose some viewers for a while, but everything that comes before and everything that follows is so fantastic that you’ll definitely catch back up with it.

As i write this review, this film is just finishing up, and I must say, this is one of the most moving accounts of Anne Frank that I’ve seen to date. We all know the story of Anne Frank, how it started, and what a complete tragic end of her life; and more importantly, what hope she brought to the world that killed her. This film is a remarkable, incredible retelling of the life of Anne Frank.

The reasons why this film soars, aboslutely soars, are numerous. First, the film tells the complete story, from before the Franks hid in the Annex, until her final days in the concentration camp. Whereas some films tend to linger solely on Anne’s days in the Annex, this wider focus gives us the larger picture. Anne’s time in captivity is heart wrenching; we have fallen in love with the tempestuous, darling girl and to see her solely fade away is devastating. It serves as a testament both to the millions lost, and the one girl that would write a book to change the world.

Secondly, the performances in this movie are amazing. Ben Kingsley and Brenda Blethyn lend their star-stature names to this project, and turn in performances that are real and dignified. Favorite Lili Taylor, who is one of America’s most talented actressses, gives a quiet, powerful performance as Miep Gies. It’s Hannah Taylor Gorden, as Anne, brings Anne to life with complexity and grace. Gordon honors Anne in every scene, never deifying the girl, but making her real, human. She even writes the way Anne did, holding the pen as Anne would have held it. That attention to detail does not go unnoticed by those of us who love Anne. It was a perfect match of actress and role.

Third, this film is visually beautiful. Often, you expect a “lower” standard of technical excellence in a television film. Rightfully so, ABC and the director, Robert Dornhelm, give this film a professional style. There are several scenes where you are just in awe, apart from the incredible story.

It was sad for me to learn that this film was not endorsed by the Anne Frank Foundation, because the film was based on a biography not approved by the foundation. Whereas I think its important to have the Foundation so Anne’s life can be told in a honest way, they should have seen the film before making a judgment. This movie is a beautiful testament to a beautiful life, and it should be free from any political wranglings like this.

By the final scene, when Miep gives Otto Frank his daughter’s diary, and he travels back into the Annex to look at it, my heart was breaking. Anne didn’t live to see the effect she’d have on the world, but I think for all of us, we have adopted Anne as our own daughter or sister. She belongs to the world now, and we are responsible to take care of her, to make sure her story is told generation after generation, to honor her life by ensuring nothing like this ever happens in history again.

This is one of the best films that I’ve ever seen! In some films that are based on a true story, directors twist the plot line around to suit their whims. But in this one, the producers stuck close to the real story, portraying each character and event as they really were. Actual footage from WWII was inserted in certain points of the film, giving it an authentic air. Also, some of the consultants were people who knew the real Frank family, people like Miep Gies (who to my knowledge is still alive in Amsterdam today) and Jacqueline Van Marsen, one of Anne’s childhood friends. The actors and actresses acted out their roles superbly, and I was especially impressed with Hannah Taylor Gordon’s performance. Not only does she bear a striking resemblence to the real Anne Frank, but she also acts very much like I believe Anne would have acted. I also appreciate the fact that, even though the film’s setting is a very harsh time in history, the producers managed to show the brutality of the Nazi occupation without resorting to blood and gore. Anne’s story is a sad one, but one worth watching, because it reminds us that the people who died in the holocaust were just normal human beings with hopes and dreams, whose lives were abruptly snuffed out by people who were blinded by racism and extreme nationalism. I would recommend this film for any history buff. It’s definitely the best portrayal of Anne Frank on film. Thumbs up for this movie!

Mill Creek Entertainment has done it again! Movie Serials:

The Undersea Kingdom

While some may consider the inclusion of movie serials to be a bit of a cheat on this set, one can argue that movie serials (and radio) served as a starting point of sorts for the early years of episodic television and, of course, the serials did eventually make their way to television’s airwaves. Perhaps the only major omission of a show with a paranormal flavor that is in the public domain and is not included in this set is Boris Karloff’s limited series “The Veil” which, possibly, could have substituted for one of the serials. Regardless, this 12-DVD set includes a mixture of some very common, some not so common, and some downright rare shows. Arguably, the biggest “find” on this set is the inclusion of 24 episodes of “Captain Z-Ro” and, to the best of my knowledge, this set marks the commercial DVD debut of Boris Karloff’s “Thriller,” a series that many fans have long desired to see on DVD. Perhaps the inclusion of the “Thriller” episode “The Return of Andrew Bentley” might prompt further consideration for an official DVD release of this series in the future. And those who previously purchased Mill Creek’s 4-DVD set of 50 “One Step Beyond” episodes will be delighted to know that of the 16 episodes included here, only one episode (”Where Are They?”) is repeated from that earlier box set.

Among the unsold pilots, I enjoyed the second incarnation of “The Shadow” titled “Invisible Avenger,” which was filmed on location in New Orleans in the late 1950s and was eventually released theatrically, and “Tales of Frankenstein.” Don Megowan, who appears as the monster in “Frankenstein” also appears in the live action version of “Captain Fathom,” which plays like a low rent version of “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.” One also wonders about the possibilities of “Destination Space” had it been picked up as a regular series by CBS. Though a bit on the talky side (especially in the middle scenes depicted on earth), the pilot featured solid performances from TV veterans like Harry Townes, Charles Aidman, Edward Platt, Whitney Blake and Gail Kobe, and had the backing of a major studio, Paramount.

As is the case with compilations of public domain shows, the audio/visual quality is all over the map and reflects a variety of sources such as kinescopes for the live shows and unrestored 16 millimeter syndication prints for many of the TV show episodes. While none of the episodes that I have viewed so far are unwatchable, this is definitely not a set for videophiles, nor those expecting state-of-the-art special effects. In fact, the special effects are downright primitive when compared to today’s special effects and CGI. But considering the low budgets for most of these productions, it’s obvious that the SFX people were trying to do the best they could with the limited resources available to them and that’s part of the charm of watching these early Sci-Fi TV efforts.

The variety of the shows included in this set is so broad that there is bound to be something to appeal to almost anyone who even remotely enjoys science fiction. This set is highly recommended for classic/vintage TV fans and those who enjoy the early days of science fiction on the small screen. My rating is closer to **** & ½ for this release, just missing a full five stars given the variable audio/visual quality.

Any reviewer stating that this collection is a rip-off couldn’t be more wrong in my opinion. Mill Creek is a wonderful company that is one of the first distributors to provide public domain material at a budget, affordable price. Their price structure is the same for all their 150 episode box sets. If you can wait a little while you will be able to pick this up for around $16 or less. I couldn’t recommend their other TV classics enough. Their 3 Western and Detective releases are wonderful, and should be sought-out. I have been asking Mill Creek to release a Sci-fi set this past year and they are now doing it and I couldn’t be happier. Since they are releasing public domain material, they have to stick with what they have available. I’m sure they are putting the serials on the set to not only fill space, but they must have thought they would fit in nicely with the Sci-fi theme. I can’t wait to watch some of these old episodes again. Looks like good family fun.

The documentary states that of the 700,000 inmates released from American prisons each year, half of them have mental disabilities. This work focused on those with severe problems who keep entering and exiting prison. This work has my mental wheels spinning; it presented fewer facts than it made me ask a ton of questions.

Buy,Download, Or Stream FRONTLINE: The Released! Click Here

This work didn’t answer something I need to know: “Do we give resources to the severely mentally ill to help them or to reduce their harm to society?” Some of the crimes committed by these men include robbery, assault, property damage, domestic violence, etc. Of course, that stuff can’t be tolerated in a functional society. The victims of these men are not interviewed here and something tells me this documentary would upset them greatly. One big problem for these men is that they freely chose to stop taking their meds. Under freedom of choice, that’s fine. However, if experts know they will be destructive without their meds, then why hasn’t the law or legislators forced them to take them?

This work shows white and Black male ex-convicts in approximately equal numbers. The experts interviewed included whites and Blacks. As an African-American progressive, I would like to see more Blacks enter professions where they can help these people in need. There are no female ex-cons shown. One interviewee said this problem mostly affects men. Fair enough, but while women only make up a fraction of inmates, I once read that female inmates have extraordinarily complex issues. The exclusion of women in this documentary may rub some viewers the wrong way.

Someone very dear to me has done lots of prison time. He described prisons as being very miserly with providing resources. He described parole officers as being uncaring and only concerned about ex-cons not coming up dirty. The mentally-ill men shown here seemed to have health care options at their disposal and I doubt that is true for many “sane” ex-convicts fresh from the pin. In this light, it was odd to see mentally-ill ex-cons have contact with social workers and many others who cared about them. This work does make me wonder if we’d have less crime if non-ill inmates and ex-cons were given as much attention as the men presented here.

I wondered about the employees who have contact with these men. I’m sure the psychiatrists in this field are making mad loot. However, if you work in a halfway house or if you provide case management for these men, are you being paid adequately or is this just a labor of love? Maybe the country could reduce unemployment by hiring more citizens to work with this population. However, if a person’s heart is not into it, would they do more harm to these men than good? Is work with this marginalized group rewarded well or thankless?

Buy,Download, Or Stream FRONTLINE: The Released! Click Here

Remember the older man who didn’t want to leave prison in “Shawshank Redemption”? Morgan Freeman called him “institutionalized.” This documentary laments that these men go in and out of prison. However, none of the mentally-ill men interviewed ever said they disliked prison. This work never answers, “Do these men prefer to be locked up, rather than deal with the many responsibilities in the free world?” Similar to the practice of not taking needed medications, do these men chose incarcerated life?

This documentary was both eye-opening and frustrating. It answers little, but makes this viewer ask questions in a positive way. Perhaps the issues here are so difficult that a discussion of them is just going to be naturally painful, though potentially exciting.

I do not say this lightly. The visual language is unforgettable: the crashing waves, the jagged cliffs, the colossal menacing castle, and amidst it the supreme elegance of Hamlet. Kozintsev is a master of black-and-white. This film has to be in black-and-white. The shades of gray need to be there: the alternately glittering and raging grays of the waves, the mysterious grays of the rock, the deadening gray of the castle, and the slender figure of Hamlet in stark black-and-white contrasted against them. The score by Shostakovitch is shatteringly intense, and it too has to be this way.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Grigori Kozintsev’s Hamlet! Click Here

Innokenti Smoktunovski was considered one of the greatest actors in the Soviet Union, and it is easy to see why. His voice is awesome. He moves stupendously. At one level, it is attractive and sexy. At another level, it visualizes the fragility, dignity, and beauty of a human being. The scene of Hamlet dying by the sea–a lone figure leaning languidly against the rock–is one of the most haunting images in film.

Directors and actors too often do `Hamlet’ clearly in relation to other `Hamlets’, so much so that it can become a bit of a pissing contest–who can do a more fiery or provocative (or popular) version. This Hamlet is free from such baggage. Its authors start from first principles. They focus on creating a work of art in the medium of film. They use the possibilities of film, but the medium never drives the message. Everything–the sets, the close-ups, the camera angles–is there only for artistic expression.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Grigori Kozintsev’s Hamlet! Click Here

A great work of art is deeply transformative, and this film is.

From the first scenes, implicitly conveying the fact of the royal death, and Claudius’ monolog, split between a herald reading a decree at a town square, courtiers repeating “in equal scale weighing delight and dole” and foreign ambassadors echoing them in their respective languages, and finally the king himself addressing his advisors – you know you are watching a work of a master. Of the three most popular screen adaptations, the classic Olivier’s, the roaring Mel Gibson’s and the Kenneth Branagh’s parody, none is even close to this one. The excellent set and costumes, great acting, outstanding dark, gothic-like black-and-white camera work, Shostakovich’s music – everything tells of a masterpiece. Of course, limitations of a screen play are obvious – lots of great lines omitted, added scenes (such as Hamlet on his way to England forging the king’s letter, which was borrowed later by Tom Stoppard for his Rozenkrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead) – but it’s the ultimate screen play nonetheless.

This Disney family comedy was released theatrically in 1971, and aired on the “The Wonderful World of Disney” television show in 1974, ‘79, and ‘82. Dean Jones and Sandy Duncan (in the dippiest role of her life) are married couple that is having a hard time making it. Their son wants a dog, but they can’t afford it. The father is working at a laboratory that uses animals as test subjects for intelligence, and his duck subject is a failure. One day it gets gamma rays by accident and the boss says, “Get rid of that duck”. The duck becomes the boys pet, but begins to lay golden eggs. The family wants to take the duck for their own use and gets greedy, upsetting the boy. It turns out the duck will only lay eggs for a certain sound and watching Dean Jones try to attempt this sound is hilarious. The government is trying to track down the source of the eggs that keep showing up around town. But the party is interrupted by a hostile neighbor that works for the IRS, and leads up to a wild car chase by the IRS agents and this leads to tons of slapstick humor.

A friend and I are preparing for a trip to Mexico and I purchased this DVD thinking it would provide video footage and appealing ( educational and quirky?) insight into Mexico. The film footage was from the 3rd Century – edited in without attempting to change the dated color or create some semblance of context. Ian Wright spent most of his time lying on the side of the road waiting for “fun” – as if, we too were going to relish his hitch hike to hell. I would love to say that there was an element of camp – or anything worthy of passing this DVD on to fellow travelers, but it was poorly written, filmed, edited, and way too much money for such a lifeless production! Next time I will definitely pass on Globe Trekker DVD’s as a source of inspiration for travel.

Although some reviews indicate that this DVD shows the extreme side of a trip to Mexico (including old busses, questionable hotels, etc.), these videos have a great mix of tourist attractions and culture. If you want to understand more about the country than just nice hotels and premium beaches, this is a great DVD
