For anyone familiar with other Mill Creek collections, this is pretty standard. It’s a collection of 600 cartoons, of frequently middling video quality and unknown provenance (i.e. you may being seeing the version originally shown, or the version edited for TV 30 years later). The collection is indiscriminate–”Destination Earth” is a propaganda piece by the oil industry, for example–but most of them are fairly typical cartoons. If you have other cartoon collections, this probably overlaps them, if it doesn’t include them. Many of these cartoons are available online from legit sources.

Being familiar with Mill Creek, my worst problem with this set was organization. There’s no good reason to spread series across several disks, mixed in with other cartoons. No disk is filled by cartoons with one character or by one series, and one typical example, the Popeye cartoons, have 30 cartoons on one disk, 6 on another, and one more on its lonesome.

Is it worth it? If you have to have just about every cartoon released in these “public domain” cartoon collections in one neat box, then this is your box. If you don’t have any “public domain” cartoon collections and want to see one, this will begin and just about end your collection. You might want to grab a few DVDs at a dollar store first, to see if it’s to your taste. If you’re looking for a decent collection of almost any of the Warner Brothers or Disney characters, then don’t look here; little of their work is available here, and it’s not the good shorts. If you’re looking for beautifully restored film, likewise, you need to look at pricier, smaller sets; this set averages okay with some pretty bad stretches, and at no point has seen careful restoration.

I’ve always been attracted to old cartoons. This dvd has lots of them and many great memories are here. There are cartoons by Paul Terry, George Pal, and others from the early days of movie cartoons. Cartoon characters include The Little King, Felix the Cat, Toonerville Trolley, Betty Boop, Popeye, Casper, Little Lulu, Farmer Alfalfa, and Dick & Larry aka Tom & Jerry (not the cat and mouse). You’ll surely find some that you like. Nope…there aren’t any Looney Tunes here, though.

They don’t make movies like this anymore. Released in 1969, “Coming Apart” died fast at the box office (you can get the sad details from the director’s “essay” included on the DVD) and was virtually unseen by anyone for the next 30 years. Its belated release on video should change that, however.

The plot: A psychiatrist (Rip Torn) sets up a hidden camera in his apartment, which covertly records his liaisons with the unsuspecting women who end up in his lair. (Note: this movie is NOT for the kids.) Filmed (in black & white) entirely on a single set, with very little camera movement, it strongly resembles those old Warhol shorts, as well as the ’60s underground flick “David Holzman’s Diary,” which employs roughly the same gimmick. Stars Torn and Kirkland really tear through the scenery–sometimes literally. The deliberately static style gives the proceedings a cozy intimacy and a convincingly “natural” look… but you’ll probably wish, as I did, that it weren’t quite so slow moving. It’s a fairly interesting experiment, though, and a welcome change of pace from the manufactured junk of contemporary Hollywood cinema.

this film is typical of the 60’s movies that tried different approaches just to be different. the film has a lot of sex but isn’t sexy. Rip Torn underplays his role effectively as a womanizer whose story is told through the reflections of a mirror. those who know Torn only from Dodge Ball or Larry Sanders will be interested in seeing him as a young man. The movie reminds of french new wave films of the era and is a little difficult to follow since the premise is that you are watching an 8mm version of his interludes with different women. it isn’t a “feel good story” for the entire family, but if you like different approaches to film, it is worth a look

The movie shows that Fox was often right up there with MGM when it came to musicals! Surely one of the most brilliantly designed, staged and costumed backstage musicals ever made. The two stars strut their stuff in enough feathers to eradicate several endangered species – and then get it on with a zest and verve that make you instantly fall in love with them. The Dolly Sisters were a vaudeville phenomenon that took the world by storm and although this is merely a typical romanticized Hollywood version of a show business bio it is well worth watching just to get the flavor of what they might have been like. Warning: the “Darktown Strutter’s Ball” Follies Bergere number will seem racist by today’s standards, but it is beautifully put together, and is one of the first instances of Hollywood even hinting that black women might take their place with the most gorgeous showgirls in the world (though they used white girls in dark makeup to make the point). Color, Music, Style- A+: Story, performances – OK See it for the still-amazing production numbers.

The Dolly Sisters (1945) may be a big, sappy, Technicolor musical, loosely based on the life and loves of the International stars, Rosie and Jennie Dolly, but it is one of my favorite Betty Grable movies. It is filled with eye-popping musical numbers and has a great score including, “I Can’t Begin To Tell You”, “I’m Always Chasing Rainbows”, “Carolina In The Morning” and “Darktown Strutter’s Ball”. John Payne, June Haver and S.Z. “Cuddles” Sakall co-star in this highly entertaining musical from 20th Century Fox.

This DVD includes “The Lesson” and “Hunted,” which absolutely do not belong on this disc and “Hunted” only serves to confuse those who saw what happened to Leatherhead some episodes before. As you can see from my list of shows IN ORDER like it’s supposed to be, this disc and the disc that follows (3.2) is severely flawed:

I happened to snag this early, and found that it has 5 episodes.

Along with the 3-Parter “Space Invaders” [mentioned by the other reviewer], the DVD also includes “The Lesson” (a cute ep., with another flashback look at the young Turtles), and “Hunted” (another great Leatherhead-centered episode).

Jack Bauer ( Kiefer Sutherland) is still recovering from the death of his wife and the events that took place in season 1. He no longer works for the CTU, and he is trying to move on with his life by rebuilding a solid relationship with his daughter Kim (Elisha Cuthbert). Unfortunately, a terrorist threat has been announced, and over the course of the next 24 hours, a nuclear bomb is going to be detonated in Los Angeles. David Palmer ( Dennis Hayworth) is now president, and is faced with the challenge of containing the threat. The only person Palmer can turn to is obviously Jack Bauer- the man who saved his life. Now Jack must become the man he once was, and find out who is behind the nuclear bomb before it is too late…

I was originally very skeptical when it came to season 2 of Fox’s ground-breaking show “24″. Season 1 had incredible acting, nail-biting suspense, and a totally original format of airing each episode as an hour over the course of one day. I figured there was no way that FOX could pull off a second season that even came close. However, the show managed to become even better for season 2. The plot behind season 2 really hits home because of the events of 9/11. Another thing that was great, was the fact that season 2 managed to build off of the previous season when it came to the characters. Even though season 1 was based on a different set of events, the emotional fall out from that day is carried over into season 2, because of how great the acting was. Kiefer Sutherland, Dennis Hayworth, Elisha Cuthbert, Carlos Bernard ( Tony Almeida), Sarah Clarke ( Nina Myers), and Penny Johnson ( Sherry Palmer) are all back and are all fantastic. In fact, it was one of the most well rounded performances from a cast I have ever seen.

The second season was even better than the first season in my opinion. However, the show was not the only thing that improved. The DVD itself took a complete 180 when it came to the special features that were offered. The first season DVD set did not really have any special features at all, or even any scene selection. The second time around, FOX made sure to correct their mistake. First of all, there is actually scene selection. You do not have to manually skip through the whole episode just to find a particular scene. The special features are great as well. The show itself fits over six discs. However, a seventh disc was created that contains nothing but extras. There are 44 deleted scenes, three incredible featuretes, and much more. If you were a fan of the first season, there is definately no way you can afford to pass this up. A must buy!!

Season Two is the true test of this show’s mettle. Can 24 sustain itself now that the novelty of its groundbreaking real-time conceit has worn off?

The answer is yes. 24’s writers and producers are smart enough to know that it wasn’t so much the real-time aspect which connected with people, but the array of insurmountable obstacles and impossible odds with which Jack Bauer is faced episode after episode, as befits a good suspense thriller.

Season Two’s nuclear-bomb plot is much more ambitious than Season One. And yes, there comes a point in the middle where the action lapses quite badly, when the threat of detonation diminishes. And the show underutilizes Jack’s character for a good four, five episodes — a mistake. It’s Kiefer Sutherland’s edgy, aggressive portrayal of this dogged, often morally questionable character that anchors the tone of the show, and the first quarter of the show has far too much Kate Warner (Sarah Wynter) and not enough jack Bauer.

The Kate Warner subplot, while a good one in conception, goes awry in execution for a good 50 per cent of the show. Sarah Wynter does an adequate job, but every single character in this subplot remains paper-thin up until the midpoint of the season. It’s like the gooey family love-in in Season One without the physical danger. Since the characters have no weight (Laura Harris as Marie Warner is especially irritating), their fussy interactions also ring hollow, especially ranked alongside Jack’s apocalyptic nuclear threat and even the Kim Bauer kidnapping subplot. Once Kate and Jack meet and she is incorporated into the conspiracy through-line, she becomes a much better character and Wynter’s appeal comes through.

Sutherland remains the center of everything, befittingly. The loss of Sarah Clarke in the main cast does hurt; Reiko Aylesworth does a fine job as replacement Michelle Dessler, but she just doesn’t have Clarke’s arresting presence. Fans of Season One looking for closure in the Nina Myers subplot can stop looking — Season Two gives Clarke a wonderful opportunity to chew scenery and play an insidious villainess and Clarke is terrific in this role, but don’t expect any attempt to explain just how Nina Myers went from saintly sidekick to vicious double agent. Elisha Cuthbert continues to impress with acting nuances uncommon among actresses her age; she’s a pro at making interesting choices at emotional moments. Dennis Haysbert is stately and subtly powerful as President Palmer, and happily, Penny Johnson Jerald as Sherry Palmer is given a more human dimension in the scripts, rather than the blindly destructive saboteur of Season One, and Jerald rises to the occasion. The best performance of the season, however, belongs to Xander Berkeley. Finally this fine actor is given a character arc worthy of his abilities, and Berkeley’s portrayal of George Mason’s metamorphosis is emotionally devastating, while retaining the character’s defining irreverence and scuzziness. I wonder why he was locked out of the Emmys?

Suffice to say that I stayed up for another 20 hours straight watching this thing. This show has a hypnotic quality not found in any other, and you can bet I’ll be first in line for Season Three — especially since Season Two ends on the mother of all cliffhangers. I just hope the writers can keep this up.

Terry Gilliam’s classic satire returns to DVD in a spiffed up edition from Criterion. Featuring a high definition anamorphic remaster the picture looks great (and it has been enhanced for 16×9 TVs so it will fill the screen)the sound has been remastered as well. Is it worth picking up again? Absolutely if you’re a fan of the film. The single disc edition is basically the same as the first disc in the three disc set–it includes Gilliam’s commentary track as part of the package as well as the “Final Cut” version of the film that runs 142 minutes (vs. 131 for the regular DVD release).

Buy,Download, Or Stream Brazil! Click Here

If you purchased the three disc set and want to upgrade you could just pick up this single disc edition as the extras are exactly the same as the previous edition (unless you want the remastered “Love Conquers All” 92 minute edit done by Universal to make it more commercial). Be aware though that the single disc edition doesn’t have any of the material from the third disc of the boxed set. That disc documented the insanity that surrounded the film when Universal deemed it not commercial enough.

Why it took Criterion so long to get this new improved version to market is anyone’s guess (and why it took them so long to adopt anamorphic transfers as well). This really is the way it should have been released in the first place. Either way this edition looks and sounds great. It has a terrific commentary track by director Gilliam, an essay but no other extras.

There are a million different takes on the actual movie “Brazil,” but what I hope to do in this review is actually rate the collection put together by Criterion.

The 3-DVD box set of “Brazil” starts off with the “final final” director’s cut of the film, topping out at 142 minutes. (There are eight minutes of footage added to this release.) The film is presented in its original 1.85:1 dimensions. Fact is, the transfer of the movie is so-so.

For all the Criterion hoopla, the print here is flawed. The notes pay tribute to a few digital scratch removers, but I was truly surprised by the amount of garbage in the print (dirt, empty spots, and such) that litter the frames. One of Sam’s initial dream flights has considerable gunk inhabiting the lower left corner, and any frame by frame analysis will reveal an endless parade of bits of stuff inhabiting every shot. To be honest, I expected a lot more here and if there is any criticism of this collection, it lies with this fault primarily. They could have cleaned everything up considerably more than they did. And that’s a shame at this price.

Colors and contrast in the print look good, though, and the sound is fabulous. They pulled out a full stereo soundtrack and made it sing, so kudos there, too. The sound is clean and vibrant.

The booklet detailing the film is good, but not the best I’ve seen, even for a lesser boxset. The content listings for the other two DVDs are little more than a single overview sheets.

Director Terry Gilliam’s commentary track on the first disc is priceless and fascinating, almost worthy of the cost for the set alone. As a film geek, I personally find all director commentaries to be interesting, so I may not be the best judge. In this case, though, Gilliam gives us a rich look at the film that stands up to the best of other directors’s commentaries I’ve heard.

Criterion’s skimping on the booklets is made up for in the second disc, which contains all the background of the film. “The Battle of Brazil” is the high point as Gilliam and some of the Universal Studios execs discuss the crazy backstory that almost led to the demise of the film as we know it. The film’s handlers and financiers all fretted that they had an arthouse piece that would go nowhere, but Gilliam refused to make the desired cuts or to swerve from the darkness of the ending. It wasn’t until he managed to sneak a final edit of the movie to the Los Angeles Film Critics organization that he was able to outduel the execs. When the critics lauded the film and lavished their prizes on it, the naysayer’s bluff was called and the film was released, albeit to only modest box-office that barely made back its money. Film critic Jack Matthews hosts this slightly more than an hour examination of the battle between the creative forces and the forces of pragmatism.

The second DVD also includes “What is Brazil?” – a mostly throwaway behind the scenes look at the making of the film that features the cast and some of the writers. I didn’t find it particularly illuminating.

The big disappointment in the second DVD is that many of the production notes covering the design, special effects, score, and more are not filmed, but simply text. I wanted more than that. Somewhat disappointing. There are some good insights into the flying effects in the dream sequences, though. That much of it was model work is simply amazing.

The last DVD features the bowdlerized, 94 minute TV syndication release of the film dubbed “Love Conquers All.” This happy ending version was done apart from Gilliam and probably represents what the studio heads had hoped would be the released version. “Execrable” is too kind a word to use to describe this version. Critic David Morgan’s commentary notes all that was left out, and a few scenes that were added back in. While this version isn’t worth your time, it is worthy of inclusion in the set, fleshing out the madness that almost killed the movie entirely.

I have always considered “Brazil” to be genius, frankly. As a dystopia, the world it portrays out-Orwells them all. If you hate bureaucracy–and who but bureaucrats doesn’t–then this is the film for you. And only Gilliam would be daring enough to make a renegade HVAC repairman a mythically heroic addition to that world.

Plenty of people don’t get this movie and I don’t know why. Roger Ebert loved “Dark City,” but passed on “Brazil,” inexplicably, so even critics aren’t perfect. Many of today’s films owe much to “Brazil” and that alone makes it important.

In the end, three stars for the package and five for the film itself. The lack of a more pristine print subtracts two full stars from what would have otherwise been a perfect review, however. Criterion’s boxset, though flawed, is still the best way to experience the film, so if you are a fan of “Brazil” or Gilliam’s work, this is the only way to fly.

The Lonely Planet travel series is different from many of the other travel series such as Rick Steves, Samantha Brown and so on. Each episode is a little quirky. It seeks to express a feeling more than landmarks. The advantage with their Central American series is you get to see countries that aren’t often featured on travels DVDs. If you want all the Central American episodes buy this single pack. Much more economical than purchasing single episodes. Enjoy!

This DVD contains all the anime’s episodes (which is only 4 of them). I had played the game on the GBA and had always wondered what the characters would sound like.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Tales of Phantasia! Click Here

When I finally watched the anime, boy was I in for a surprise. True that some of the characters like Cress, Chester and Mint I could imagine them sounding like they did, but others like Arche and Claus surprised me (but in a good way).

Just a fair warning, it doesn’t cover the whole game like one would think, and there seems to be a major gap between episode 1 and 2. But if you’ve played the game, you’ll understand what’s going on. If you’re a fan of the game, buy it.

When i first heard about the Tales of Phantasia OVA, I was pretty interested. But what I saw gave me a rather mixed reaction. The Animation and Music may be quite nice, but the compression of the story is where the problem with this anime lie. You see, this anime is based on an RPG game that was first released on the SNES, before getting remaked onto the PSX. So what clearly should have been at least 26 episodes in length, instead became 4. This resulted in major skipping around in the story, confussing those that have never played the video game it was based on.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Tales of Phantasia! Click Here

While I must admit I did enjoy what we did get to see, I am afraid that I can only recommend it for fans of the game. Everyone else will probably not enjoy it, thanks to all of the skipping in the story. But if that sort of thing does not bother you, then go right ahead. But I would prefer to use my money elsewhere.

All in all, I give this anime a 3/5 stars.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Mr. Bean’s Holiday! Click Here

A MUST SEE !!

The Dick Van Dyke Show. The Lucy Show. The Odd Couple.

What on earth do these wonderful old T.V. shows have to do with Mr. Bean’s Holiday?

Well, not a whole lot thematically, but there is one very significant tie between them. The classic shows mentioned above were not children’s programs. They were prime-time comedy series aimed at adults. They were clean as a whistle for the most part, as shows then tended to be, but the subjects of the shows revolved around divorce, marital troubles, problems at the office etc.

Unfortunately, modern entertainment equates “adult” with sex and violence. In other words, the word adult has been appropriated. Nothing could possibly be funny, clever, inventive or exciting if there isn’t at least some sex or controversy right? It’s a pretty sad state when “adult” has come to mean “15 year-old boy” :/

Now before you roll your eyes, I am as far from being a prude as you can get. I own and admire scores of R-rated films, and listen to music that would make most “hipsters” hair curl with shock and disgust. But there was a time when writers actually had to be clever to get a laugh, imagine that. Any idiot can walk into a theater full of adolescents, drop the F-bomb and get roars of laughter, and do, now that was easy. The industry has gone from using salatious material to be thought-provoking (Kubrick, Scorsese) to relying on it for an easy thrill.

Well just when you thought that the art of being funny without body parts and fart jokes was a lost art, along comes Mr. Bean. Rowan Atkinson reminds us with this funny, charming film, that funny is funny. My 9-year-old roared with delight throughout the entire film, as did my wife and I. And the added kick was, it was the first time in a long, long time we did it as a family, without my wife holding the remote with a death-grip to skip over something. It was a nice, and far-too overdue feeling.

Of course there are several references thoughout the movie that will sail over the heads of most children, a scene satirizing a pretentious, arty filmmaker for instance (which was hilarious), but the lion’s share of the old, almost silent film-style sight gags and elaborately choreographed Buster Keaton stunts (The amazing walk over a busy highway was pretty impressive), will entertain anyone with a bit of wonder left in them.

A previous reviewer believed that today’s children would be bored by Mr. Bean’s goofy antics. Sadly, these days he may be right. There are no CGI thingies crashing into each other, no underdressed teen girls chatting on cell phones at the mall, and believe it or not, no fart jokes. But you know something, when I watched my daughter laugh and applaud at the end, I think …maybe he’s wrong.

I purchased this DVD right after Ted Williams, the great Boston player died (I knew he was in the video) and I sat in my living room watching it on the big screen TV with the volume cranked and I felt like I was in the ball park with the legends of baseball. The names of the great stretched back to the first days of the 20th century and as the living legends spoke of those that had come before their eyes would shine with pride for being part of such a great game, a great fraternity. The younger generation still playing spoke with pride about shaking the hands of one of their idols and the crowd was just great. If indeed the team depicted in the video could have been fielded – it would be the most priceless game ever played.
