A cracking political thriller with most of the action Washington based and involving governments, private companies and perhaps predictably, a small oil-rich Asian country (Trygyzstan, Tyrgyztan or Tyrygsztan depending how quick your eyes are) so the events are very contemporary and mostly credible, too.

The 350 minutes get off to a stunning start with an airliner being blown up and crashing onto an expressway near Washington and from this point on you’ll be hooked like I was. Considering this is not big bucks Hollywood the crash looked incredibly convincing, as does everything else though it was mostly filmed in Toronto and Hamilton, Ontario.

The six parts move along efficiently, especially with plenty of steadycam and accompanying sound effects, but you’ll have to pay attention because this is not black and white plotting, the good guys are not obvious and there is no winning side. The casting is fine with Jason Isaacs turning in a great British Ambassador and perhaps Sharon Gless should be taken on by Department of Defence as their no-nonsense Secretary (but maybe her hands are tainted, too). Nothing is what it seems at first.

The UK DVD release includes a twenty-seven minute ‘making of’ extra. Worth a look though it is the usual back slapping stuff. Several minutes are devoted to creating the airliner crash, which I thought were interesting and Grainne Marmion has some good comments on how she interpreted the production.

This is a conspiracy thriller that will certainly be worth watching several times.

While I don’t think “The State Within” is a perfect political thriller, I will pay it the highest compliment for this type of entertainment–it is ambitiously complex without being unnecessarily convoluted. This six part British miniseries (each part is approximately an hour) carries about twelve major characters and five major plot strands and interweaves them expertly throughout. Seemingly unrelated events converge as layers of intrigue and duplicity are revealed. While some have compared this to a more cerebral “24,” it actually has little in common with the American show other than the overt themes inherent in global politics, government corruption, and terrorism. But wait a minute…..Just as “24″ in an intriguing thrill ride that sometimes strains credibility, so is “The State Within.” And just as you might overlook the believability factor in “24″ because the story told is so intricate and entertaining, you might also be willing to accept “The State Within” at face value. For make no mistake, “The State Within” (at the most fundamental level) is rousing entertainment.

Surprisingly, this British production is set largely in the United States. The British Ambassador, played by Jason Isaacs, becomes the centerpiece for the story when an airplane is bombed as it takes off over Washington D.C. Issacs is, literally, in the middle of the wreckage (in an impressively staged action scene) and continues to be, figuratively, as a British national is implicated in the terrorism. With multiple plot strands that include a death row inmate, an American company’s international investment, a rogue military unit on U.S. soil, a controversial and brutal coup, and the Secretary of Defense (Sharon Gless)–this drama effectively juggles a lot of action. With a solid, well written screenplay–it keeps the pacing quick and handles matters intelligently and, for the most part, believably. That’s not to say everything is 100% believable in concept, but within the context of the story–things flow logically and maintain your interest without insulting your intellect.

While surrounded by a capable and talented cast, Isaacs does carry much of the production as the Ambassador/action hero. Always good, and underrated, this is an interesting counterpoint to his most recent role as an Irish mob boss in Showtime’s “Brotherhood.” Any doubt to his versatility should be put to rest in comparing these pieces of good versus evil (and for good measure, throw in the romantic leading man of “Passionada” and “Nine Lives”). Gless has the showiest role as the tough-as-nails official–and while many will appreciate its ferocity, it lacked a subtlety that I would have found more compelling. But everyone really contributes to the excellence of “The State Within” in terms of acting. For such a large ensemble, there isn’t one missed opportunity when it comes to casting.

I really enjoyed “The State Within” and recommend it wholeheartedly. When judging material of this length (or a series, for that matter), I have to contemplate–”Is it worth the time invested?” Definitely yes, in this case. Smart and literate. Exciting and topical. And best of all, a suitably ambiguous ending that gave me a great belly laugh! Check it out if you’re a fan of political thrillers–but be forewarned, this one will require the use of your brain. KGHarris, 03/07.

The impression that “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2″ gives is that it’s a bubbly, bright, and–for all intents and purposes–meaningless sequel to the first film. To my relief, it follows the example set by its predecessor, a surprisingly levelheaded friendship story. Four years after discovering a magically fitting pair of jeans, best friends Tibby Tomko-Rollins (Amber Tamblyn), Carmen Lowell (America Ferrera), Lena Kaligaris (Alexis Bledel), and Bridget Vreeland (Blake Lively) have returned for a second chapter that remains on perfectly equal ground with the first, focusing on coming-of-age issues like maturity, self-discovery, family, and love. Unoriginal ideas? Maybe so, but that doesn’t mean they’re any less effective. If anything, they make the film’s message that much clearer. It helps that many of the girls’ problems are based in reality–high school issues, like being pretty and popular, are pushed aside in favor of adult issues, like pregnancy scares and family crises.

If there’s anything we learned from the first film, it’s that the magic of the titular jeans was symbolic; by in large, the girls worked through their own ups and downs on their own, with no miraculous intervention other than their friendship with one another. We learn pretty much the same thing in this film, which sees each character facing new, more mature challenges. Let’s begin with Carmen, who doubles as the film’s bookend narrator. She now attends Yale, working as a stagehand for the theatre department. Her mother (Rachel Ticotin) has since remarried and is now pregnant with her second child. When Carmen’s hopes of spending the summer with her friends are dashed, she decides to join a Shakespearian theater company in Vermont with a prima donna named Julia (Rachel Nichols). Once there, a British actor named Ian (Tom Wisdom) coaxes Carmen into auditioning for “A Winter’s Tale”; to her shock–and to Julia’s horror–she’s cast as Perdita. As rehearsals continue, she begins to fall in love with Ian.

Next, there’s Bridget, who plays Soccer at Brown University. Lately, her interests have shifted to archeology. While on an expedition in Turkey, her instructor, Professor Nasrin Mehani (Shohreh Aghdashloo), opens her eyes to the fact that she’s only running away from her past. Bridget, it seems, is still haunted by the suicide of her mother. And her relationship with her father (Ernie Lively) is worse than ever; before leaving for Turkey, she discovered a box full of letters her grandmother had written her, letters her father wanted to keep hidden. Returning to the United States, Bridget takes a bus to Alabama and finally meets her grandmother, Greta (Blythe Danner), an accommodating woman with a matter-of-fact outlook on everything, including her daughter’s mental illness.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2! Click Here

The next in line is Tibby, who continues to pursue her filmmaking dreams at NYU. Forced to stay in New York for the summer to rewrite her screenplay, she gets a job at a local video store. She’s now dating Brian McBrian (Leonardo Nam), who was introduced in the first film as the “Dragon’s Lair” champion. When their relationship is threatened (for reasons I won’t reveal), Tibby begins to wonder if she was meant for happiness. She does put up a wall every time she gets close to someone, and that’s because, deep down, she believes that those you love the most will eventually abandon you. Her attempts to get sympathy from Carmen are flatly rejected; she doesn’t appreciate how uncommunicative Tibby has been all summer.

Finally, there’s Lena, who attends an art college in Rhode Island on a scholarship. Heartbroken after breaking up with her Greek boyfriend, Kostos (Michael Rady), she reverts to her old timid ways. She then meets Leo (Jesse Williams), the male model hired to pose nude in her art classes. It isn’t long before they fall in love, although we suspect it’s for all the wrong reasons. All she really knows about Leo is that he’s a nice guy, and he’s incredibly handsome. But does she know what she wants out of life? Does she even know who she is? How can know she when she’s torn between two men?

Naturally, the pants themselves have to play a part in this story, and indeed, they’re continually FedEx-ed from friend to friend. The question is: Do any of them need the pants anymore? You’d think that, at this point, a pair of old jeans traveling the world would reveal itself as a big metaphor. They may realize that by the time the film ends. I’m not entirely sure, though.

Moments of this movie are perhaps a little too sentimental, and the general plot may be a little too formulaic. At times, the dialogue is a bit contrived. Consider this conversation: When Tibby says drearily, “I suck at relationships. I should have been a guy,” Lena calmly responds, “A guy wouldn’t care about sucking at relationships.” Only best friends in a coming-of-age story could get away with lines like that. Then again, I never expected a reinvention of the wheel. Movies like “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2″–and its predecessor–are aimed at a very specific audience, namely teenage girls; if they can get something out of it other than the sight of four young women looking pretty, if they can leave the theater understanding the more complex aspects of the story, then the filmmakers can include all the predictable dialogue they want. I think this movie will get the job done, not merely for teenage girls, but for anyone open to the idea.

First of all, it is certainly an interesting experience to be the only guy in the theater for a movie like “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2.” At least I was not the oldest person there, and while that person was my date at least we could take comfort in knowing that we have both read all four of Ann Brashares’ novels about the “Sisterhood,” and therefore were entitled to be there with all the young folks. Screenwriter Elizabeth Chandler (”What a Girl Wants”) is working mainly from the final book in the series, “Forever in Blue: The Fourth Summer of the Sisterhood,” which means that Tibby (Amber Tamblyn) has a pregnancy scare in New York City, Carmen (America Ferrera) is doing a Shakespeare play in Vermont, Bee (Blake Lively) is on a archeological dig in Turkey, and Lena (Alexis Bledel) is drying to figure out how to draw a nude male model. However, some key elements from earlier novels are worked in the story, specifically Lena finding out Kostos is married and Bee meeting her grandmother from “The Second Summer of the Sisterhood,” and Carmen’s mother having a baby from “Girls in Pants: The Third Summer of the Sisterhood” (to be clear, the movie tie-in paperback being published as “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2″ is the fourth book, “Forever Blue” and not the book about the second summer).

Having read the books can be a key factor in enjoying the movie because things move really quickly and fans of the series will constantly be filling in gaps. The best indication of how fast things move is that when Bee goes to Alabama her grandmother (Blythe Danner) immediately reocgnizes her, so they forgo the entire bit about Bee pretending to be Gilda. The biggest element missing from the final book is Bee’s romance in Turkey, but the decision to create a new character, Shohreh Aghdashloo as Professor Nasrin Mehani, is a good move because it places the emphasis on Bee coming to terms with her mother’s suicide, which was arguably the most important thing that happened to her in the four books. Additionaly, following Tibby’s pregnancy scare with having to be in the delivery room with Carmen’s mother added an additional resonance to Tibby’s story.

Circumstances have certainly changed for the four actresses since the release of “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” three years ago can simply be expressed by noting that when the first movie came out Tamblyn was doing “Joan of Arcadia” and Bledel had “Gilmore Girls,” and now those shows are done and Ferrera with “Ugly Betty” and Lively on “Gossip Girl” are currently in the front seat of American pop culture. There was reportedly some reluctance to get the band back together for this second film, but at least everybody got to go to Santorini this time around and watch Bledel freckle. However, the main thing I noticed in this second movie is that Amber Tamblyn is clearly the best actress in the bunch, which is saying something if you have seen Ferrera in “Real Women Have Curves.” But this is Tamblyn’s movie and most of the best moments (and virtually all of the good lines) belong to her.

The other thing I noticed is that the guys in this movie are all good guys. Brian (Leonardo Nam) is everything Tibby is not, which is exactly what she needs, Ian (Tom Wisdom) is the proverbial Prince Charming for Carmen, and the only downside for Lena choosing between Leo (Jesse Williams) and Kostas (Michael Rady) is that one of the two does not believe there is one person who everybody to love, which is not exactly a deal breaker. The only really villain in the proceedings would be Carmen’s supposed friend, Julia (Rachel Nichols), but that just underscores the point that the girl’s are in many ways their own worst enemies. Their faults, dear readers, lie in themselves more in than others, and for the Sisterhood actualization truly comes from within. Again, because the film is covering so much, flipping from character to character as the Traveling Pants make their appointed rounds, there is a sense of sketching characters and connecting dots. Not knowing the back stories, which are necessarily reduced to assumptions without the benefit of actual exposition, can put viewers at risk for enjoying this summer of 2008 film. Director Sanaa Hamri made her mark directing music videos, so at least she has an appreciation for having to be concise in her scenes. The net result is not a great film, but certainly a satisfying one for the Sisterhood readership.

Watching this 1999 documentary over the weekend, I hadn’t laughed so hard in months. Filmed during the San Francisco Opera’s 1995 production of Wagner’s Ring Cycle, “Sing Faster” offers a rare glimpse into the complexities, banalities, and realities of making an operatic extravaganza. The narration includes running commentary by the stagehands, who passionately summarize the plots, comment on the action and crack jokes about the length of the piece.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Sing Faster – The Stagehands’ Ring Cycle! Click Here

Meanwhile, as the show goes on upstairs, downstairs the technical crew are playing poker, or reading, or are engaged in any number of non-operatic pursuits while waiting for their cues. Marvelous camera-work often shows the production in full swing, but from the point of view of those backstage and engaged in tense problem-solving, such as figuring out how much fog to use, or how to choreograph a fight with a dragon for maximum impact.

But the offhand comments running through the hour-long piece are probably the most enjoyable. This is Wagner from the point of view of those who make the magic happen every night, but who remain virtually invisible while the show is going on. As hundreds of carpenters, electricians and others sweat to make each scene come to life, they offer terse, laconic analyses of the plot, plus an occasional bit of physical comedy.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Sing Faster – The Stagehands’ Ring Cycle! Click Here

The film ends with a romp through all four operas, filmed at hyper-speed, cleverly summing up the singing, conducting and visual effects in roughly two minutes. If anything, as the credits were rolling, I felt it was over too soon.

Like the Nibelungs in Wagner’s drama, the stagehands at the San Fran opera are mercilessly whipped by an obnoxious troll (in this case, it’s some dumpy loudmouth with glasses). Despite the lack of respect that they receive, the stagehands are absolutely essential in bringing these masterpieces to the stage, and this ultra-cool film is a visual document of them in action.

The film has endearing footage of the stagehand’s own interpretations of the drama, as well as behind the scenes looks at the performers. Watching the dragon from behind the curtain, as well as Brunnhilde doing some Spanish dancing to Wagnerian music are particularly cool and funny.

If you’re into Wagner, or interested in the world of theater, then this film is an absolute delight!

I am peturbed that Amazon would spotlight two bad reviews. This was an awesome movie that kept me watching it from beginning to end. I haven’t read the book, but after watching that movie, I do intend to. It’s amazing how uplifting this spirited movie was. Diane Lane was supurb without coming across as trying too much. We never get to see her husband “Tom” who screwed her over royally in the divorce, which I think was a good decision. The movie stays in the present looking ahead to the future with a sense of hope and promise. Pick up this movie for an excellent movie night – even if you’re not a chick!

What starts out as an Italian “Money Pit” with all the attendant broken pipes, crumbling walls and incompetent handymen makes a turn for the better about a third of the way through: a more emotionally centered and revealing movie,”Under the Tuscan Sun.”
The luminescent Diane Lane stars as Frances, an intelligent, loving women with close and committed friends who finds herself in a situation that many people do: with a mate who has fallen out of love, wants a divorce as well as possession of a much loved and painstakingly renovated house, this one in San Francisco. After the divorce Frances goes to Tuscany on a lark, falls in love with a villa there, buys it and proceeds to renovate it. The villa then is the physical manifestation of the shedding of her old life and marriage and the hope for the renovation and rehabilitation of her love life as well as her life in general.
That she probably places too much faith in the physical to solve the emotional does not detract at all from the guts and hope that it takes to do so. And Lane is so psychically centered and open as Frances that you cannot help but be moved by her situation.
There are some silly plot lines and performances that I wish weren’t, but with a central performance as attractive and genuinely loving and feminine as Lane’s, “Under The Tuscan Sun” is as warm and inviting as bread just out of the oven.

Edward G. Robinson stars as a cop dedicated to getting rid of gangsters running rackets. When he is fired, he winds up taking a job with crime boss Barton MacLane, against the wishes of MacLane’s number one man, Humphrey Bogart. MacLane wants Robinson to make his organization foolproof against the police. When they start having more interference from the police, people in the organization start questioning Robinson’s trustworthiness, especially trigger-happy Bogart. This is a tough film, trying to address the problem of gangsters after Prohibition ended. Robinson, MacLane, and Joan Blondell as Robinson’s disappointed girlfriend all turn in terrific performances, while Bogart contributes yet another of his bad guy jobs that he did so often until he became a star. I liked the perspective in this gangster film, which focused more on what the law was doing to end the problem, rather than simply giving us the story from only the gangsters’ point of view. It’s one of Warner Brother’s least well known crime films, but it definitely deserves a look.

“Bullets or Ballots” (1936) features Edward G. Robinson in one of his best tough-guy roles as an undercover cop who infiltrates the New York rackets. This solid Warner crime drama also serves as a good vehicle for Humphrey Bogart as the untrusting, trigger-happy gangster. Not much action, per se, but director William Keighley keeps the pot boiling – climaxed by a memorable confrontation between Eddie G. and Bogey. The DVD includes a “Breakdowns of 1936″ blooper reel with outtakes from “Bullets or Ballots” (watch for the brief moment in which Robinson needs technical support to handle a gun).

Here we go again. MIRAMAX basterdizes another movie. MIRAMAX tends to buy the rights to these great movies & then changes them. I’ve seen the original AVALON so I can comment on what’s been changed. First, the original washed out color of the film is replaced with an deep orange. This really ruins some of the original scenes. At least some colors in the original movie came out. MIRAMAX has ruined the directors vision. If you have this DVD see the extras on the cinamatography & SFX. At least there you’ll see the original color that was intended by director Mamoru Oshii. The 2nd thing that’s been added is the additoinal dialogue. The main chracter explains the game after her 1st victory. This has been added by MIRAMAX. And lastly at the end or character explains it all or tries to.All this was added to the movie. The directors intention is to make you guess & ponder this wonderful story. But MIRAMAX has decided for you. About the only thing I’ll give them credit is the great English dub. I also enjoyed the extras. I have to give this 3 stars. If you can write a protest letter to MIRAMAX. It’s so sad how a american Distributor can tamper & ruin a directors vision. I’d recommend getting a foreign version of this movie if you can.

I am writing this only to help counteract some of the idiocy in other reviews. This movie is not for everyone: no movie is. It is a beautifully shot, wonderfully sculpted, slow-paced, and thought-provoking movie. It does not hand the answers to you on a plate, and that may bother some people, particularly those lazy viewers who rely on Hollywood films to tell them what to think with no room for imagination.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Avalon! Click Here

It is not a rip-off of The Matrix. If anything, it’s derivative of Oshii’s earlier films and thought, which heavily influenced The Matrix. I also loved Ghost in the Shell for many of the same reasons that I liked Avalon. It has some of the pacing of Taste of Cherry. It allows a person to settle in, relax, and absorb all of the deliciousness of the style of the movie and to get inside Ash, the heroine.

The special features are worth seeing. The director is very clear in his interview what his thoughts and intent are in the film. This film is a piece of art, and as such it allows each person to take from it what they want. I can understand people not liking it, but it cannot be denied that this film was done with care and passion and expresses the vision of an interesting person.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Avalon! Click Here

There are so many movies out there that are merely eye candy, like the recent Star Wars films, that are so bad otherwise. And so many movies that rely on violence or special effects and are wholly unoriginal but satisfy the kind of viewer who laments how his girlfriend fell asleep and who calls the director, “pretentious.” There are few people in the world with the creativity, passion, and artistic sense of this director.

Avalon is not the greatest movie ever made, or even in the top 100, but it is far better than most of the dreck released each week, and it is a movie that makes you think and stays with you. It is worth seeing by anyone who enjoys something a little different and has the patience and courage to use their own brain and not have a movie that’s spoon-fed to them.

And then there’s the wonderful basset hound.

George Lucas, the champion of pristine presentation in the theatre and at home has released the film that made him a legend in the state of the art of technology circa 1993.

Yes, that’s right. This transfer is from the laserdisc release of ‘93. Even worse, the film is not anamorphic like just about every other modern day DVD. What does that mean? Well a non-anamorphic DVD has a low visual clarity and the image won’t fill a widescreen TV. To make a movie anamorphic takes very little time and money. That Star Wars is not anamorphic shows a disregard for the film that is troubling.

Star Wars fans expect these landmark films to be treated just like many other films (Vertigo, Gone with the Wind, Citizen Kane, Snow White, etc.) that have gotten detailed restorations that cleaned up dirt, grime and audio ticks and presented the films in today’s state of the art. This is the release most fans were dreaming of. A release that showed the film some modicrum of respect.

George, the fan base you have worked so hard to woo over the years is fed up with your shoddy treatment of these films.

Lucasfilm is marketing this trilogy release on the inclusion of the unaltered versions of the films when in fact this is a shoddy laserdisc transfer on a bonus disc and the buyer is forced to purchase, yet again, the 2004 versions also. This is essentially retail fraud given that Lucasfilm holds itself as a bastion of home video quality and film preservation – these transfers are 13 years old, non-anamorphic and substandard. YOU WILL BE PAYING $[...] FOR OLD LASERDISCS TRANSFERRED TO DVD. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. You will not be able to watch them on a widescreen TV with adequate quality – this is shameful and shameless marketing taking advantage of buyers. DO NOT BUY!
