Sure it’s nearly bereft of fanfare and staggering production values, yet Home Movies stands as one of the most endearing and clever creations ever to grace the small screen. It’s a show that never takes itself too seriously or blows itself up to Hurculean proportions, and yet manages to exhude sincerity and meaning at almost every turn. Unlike most of the Adult Swim fodder, Home Movies actually develops coherent plots, or is at least patient enough to focus on a common theme or motif, and has a sense of humor more akin to the uneasy awkwardness of Seinfeld and Arrested Development, with characters stammering over each other and launching into embarassing (yet hillarious) tirades that go nowhere. The kids behave like adults and the adults are inept and childish, if well-meaning. Charming, minimalist and with a real heart, but above all wickedly funny, this is a real treasure, no matter what the price…

Back in the dorms at college, I could expect there to be a knock on my door every night at around 10:50. It would be one of my neighbors trying to corral everyone to watch Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim lineup on the lounge TV. I think the reason why we always had to all watch it simultaneously was because that way no one could feasibly complain about the noise from all of the raucous laughter. Anyway, I enjoyed some of it although the shows that wrung humor from random nonsense grated on my nerves after a while. The only show that I found on Adult Swim that made me return to it outside of our nightly groupthink was Home Movies. It was a quieter show, a more thoughtful show, the kind of show that wouldn’t end an episode with a character being hacked to pieces with a chainsaw for no reason unlike all the other shows that followed it on the schedule. Since then, I have been happily snapping up the well-produced DVD box sets, and I really must talk about the third season set which is my personal favorite.

For the uninitiated, Home Movies is about a young boy, his camera, and his unquenchable dreams (and also his friends and his harried single mother and his slovenly soccer coach). Eight-year-old Brendon Small spends his spare time acting, directing, editing, and co-executive producing his own short films with his two school chums (It kind of makes you wonder about what you did when you were his age. I was hitting fireflies in my backyard with a wiffleball bat, mostly). The movies themselves, though usually ending up as subplots, are always memorable and prove to be one of the show’s most defining elements. Plus, no matter what genre of film you can think of, from Hammer House-style horror to Memento-esque twisted thrillers, you can bet that Brendon, Jason and Mellissa can cobble the props and costumes together from household products and lawn gnomes and film it for your viewing pleasure. Rounding out the primary cast is Brendon’s ersatz father-figure Coach McGuirk, the oft-described “youth soccer coach who hates soccer and isn’t all that crazy about youths”. He’s a lazy sod, he constantly dispenses bad advice and utter non-wisdom (like my review’s title), and basically he should join the ranks of TV’s most lovable depraved reprobates, like Bender from Futurama, Larry from Three’s Company, or Dr. Troy from Nip/Tuck.

The main draw of this set, of course, is that the third season contains easily the best episodes that the show had to offer. The premiere, Shore Leave, features extremely good animation for a show that’s actually rather crudely drawn; the climactic moment that crosses references from El Mariachi and the Graduate is an absolute highlight of the series. Renaissance, which is about a heated rivalry between a Renaissance Festival and a Sci-Fi Convention, was like a wet dream for my nerdy self (Mental Note: show this episode at my D&D game this Friday). Guitarmageddon may have lifted the plot from the Karate Kid but it features some blistering guitar riffs from Brendon Small (The actor, not the character. The character can’t actually play worth a lick, as you’ll see). Finally, in Time to Pay the Price, the kids’ trip to a minimum security prison for a Scared Straight program is totally overshadowed by a .6 second-long shot of the main cast dressed as the X-Men (McGuirk as Colossus! Jason as Wolverine with colored pencils coming out of the back of his gloves! Brilliant! Plus there’s a new rendition of that scene of the cover of the second slipcase! This is the best DVD set ever!). Alright, so I’m a little biased towards that episode, but I can say with total objectivity that the other nine shows on this set are all great too, you can trust me on that.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Home Movies – Season Three! Click Here

What’s also great are the extras. You’ve got commentaries on select episodes from Small and co-creator Loren Brouchard. They may not be as thorough and involving as your average Simpsons commentary, but I thought they were each worth a listen (By the way, the commentary of Time to Pay the Price sounds like it’s going to be one long jazz fusion ad lib from start to finish. Don’t worry though; they actually start talking once the second act starts). The Decide-Your-Doom game is a cute expansion on the Renaissance show with new inspired artwork that features almost every character that’s ever been on the program. If you persevere and reach all three endings, you’ll unlock Easter Eggs that you may have missed from the earlier box sets. Last and definitely not least, we have an NPR radio interview of Loren and cast member H. Jon Benjamin. Between Jon’s ludicrous robot voice modulation machine and his tragically flawed improv acting lessons with the call-in Petey, I was pretty much rolling on the floor and laughing the whole way.

Why do I like Home Movies so much? I think it’s because it combines some of the best aspects of the most popular current animated shows. It has the simple but distinctive animation style plus the extremely precocious kids angle of South Park, the off-the-cuff pop culture references of Family Guy, and the well-developed characters and writing of the Simpsons. It really is a shame that the show never found its niche and lasted only four seasons (Personally, I blame the eye-straining Squigglevision and sub-par unscripted episodes of the first season on UPN). It will be a little cathartic to pick up the final DVD box set when it comes out, especially since the final episode is one of the saddest series finales since the Ice Age killed off all of the dinosaurs on Dinosaurs.

That’s why I wanted to take the time to talk about the superlative third season now. Well, Home Movies, at least we’ll always have the student’s lounge.

His name is Zunar J5 Zoric 9/49, but everyone just calls him Jake. His home planet is never identified, but they must have some beautiful felines there if this talented extraterrestrial abyssinian is their ambassador.

Actually, Jake just comes to Earth because of maintenance problems on his space-going scout ship. After arriving, he teams up with a superb comic cast, including Ken Berry, Sandy Duncan, MacLean Stevenson, Harry Morgan and Roddy McDowell for some of the zaniest adventures you or your children will ever enjoy. Just for good measure, Jake brings along the most unique flea collar ever made, and therein lies most of the story.

Jake only needs a small amount of a fairly common substance (on his planet) to repair his ship. Unfortunately, that common substance turns out to be about $120,000 worth of gold. Needing that kind of material help in a short period of time provides the vehicle for a madcap comedy.

The Cat from Outer Space isn’t a classic, but it’s close, and it’s wonderful entertainment that you can be comfortable letting your children watch without supervision. You won’t even mind when they ask to see it again and again. You’ll probably watch, too!

Highly recommended for Disney fans and Cat Lovers everywhere.

I first saw “The Cat from Outer Space” while a little girl years ago and fell on the floor laughing. When I saw it was available on DVD, I quickly purchased it to have it for my family so my 3 year old daughter can have it for when she is old enough to enjoy the humor. That won’t be long as the movie is simply infectious and has humor for all ages.

The plot is simple. An alien cat with a most unusal collar, named Zunar J5 Zoric 9/49, but whom everyone just calls “Jake” has made an emergency landing on Earth for repairs. He has only a limited amount of time to fix his spaceship before his rendevous with the mothership, that he calls “Mother”, otherwise he will be stranded on Earth for years. I used to think he was from Mars, but actually his home planet is never identified.

Jake spends his time after arriving with a terrific comedic cast including two from M*A*S*H (Harry Morgan as a gruff General and MacLean Stevenson as a compusive gambler friend), as well as Ken Berry (you’ve got to see “The Ugly Daschund” if you love this movie!), Sandy Duncan, and Roddy McDowell in some of the craziest misadventures you’ll ever witness. A timeless story that you won’t be embarrassed to watch with your kids or grandparents.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Cat From Outer Space! Click Here

In the film, it seems at first quite easy to repair his spaceship, until Jake realizes that he needs quite a lot of what is fairly common on his planet to fix it – gold! About $120,000 worth!! The rest of the film involves twists and turns about Harry Morgan as the general, trying to discover who the alien is, and the various ways Jake and his friends try to raise the capital in such a short time without raising suspitions. There is also a spy who is out to foil their plans as a subplot and that just goes to throw everything into a tizzy. There is even a quite suspenseful chase-scene!

Overall, this is film is great fun with really timeless humor. You can watch it again and again. There’s no cursing or bathroom humor, so you don’t have to be embarrassed to watch it with your kids or even your grandparents. Highly recommended.

Average customer review:

Vampire Hunter D – Bloodlust is available for streaming or downloading.

Click Here to Stream or Download Vampire Hunter D – Bloodlust

Vampire Hunter D (from the Kikuchi Manga) is one of animes most venerable titles. The original movie helped define what was to be expected of Japanese animation, and its influence was felt through titles like Akira and Princess Mononoke. So, when the sequel was announced, fans began to drool all over themselves in anticipation, and for good reason everything is improved in this movie (actually the THIRD installment of the Manga), from the animation to the handling of the story, and its a true pleasure to watch on anyones home theater.

The main character, D, is a half-human, half-vampire whose dark legacy affords him near-supernatural qualities. He uses his abilities to fight evil, and is considered the best vampire hunter in the land. His next prey is Meier Link, a gentleman vampire who has kidnapped a rich businessmans daughter. His competition is the Markus brothers, a group of mortal vampire hunters who, together, equal D in power, cunning, and skill. With the help of his symbiotic Hand (a wisecracking mouth that gives D advice and offers comic relief), D sets off to find Link, only to discover that things are not what they seem.

The animation is top-notch, fluid and vibrant, and the painstaking detail on the backgrounds puts the viewer smack into Ds world. Crosses are everywhere, and each gothic spire serves as a reminder of the constant threat of vampires and of the heroism of D and his kind. The DVD transfer leaves nothing out, coming off clean and sharp all through. The DD 5.1 soundtrack is amazingly aggressive easily one of the best digital tracks available and Bloodlust could serve as a decent demo disc to show off a new home theater system. The creators should be applauded for their efforts, as sound is just as important as backgrounds in animation, and no detail was spared.

Much has been made about the fact that there wasnt any Japanese track on this DVD. Guess what folks? The movie was originally recorded, and lip-synced, IN ENGLISH. Thats right, ENGLISH. So do your homework, fanboys! Really!

Even if you arent an anime fan, at least give Bloodlust a try; with such a great video and sound transfer, and a great movie to boot, its hard not to rave about it.

It all started when I bought the original Vampire Hunter D on DVD. I clicked on the special features, and low and behold, I have seen the light. It was the trailer for the “new” Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust movie. I fell in love with the trailer right away and watched it 24/7. Then I wanted to know more about Bloodlust so I went to the site.

I visited the site, and I was excited to see that they were gonna have a special advance screening of VHD: Bloodlust at UCLA. This was Halloween of 2000. The theatre was packed. It was filled with goths and anime fans. The atmosphere was energetic. The lights dims and the curtains open. After it ended, I couldn’t wait to watch it again. I had to wait one more year to watch it again.

The date is August 24th of 2001. This would be my second viewing of Bloodlust. Again, I was blown away. Afterwards I got to meet director Yoshiaka. For those of you who doesn’t know, he also directed “Ninja Scroll.” Ok, enough babbling, let’s talk about the movie.

It’s not technically a sequal to the original Vampire Hunter D. It takes place in the really distant future, where vampires are dominant, but their population is dwindling. In this dark future, mutants and demons roam the lands, while the humans are fighting to just live. It stars D, our protagonist, half human and half vampire(aka a dunpeal),on a mission to rescue Charlotte from our antagonist, Meier Link, a vampire.

The story is interesting as you wonder who this mysterious D is as he races time to rescue the damsel before The Markus Brothers rescues her first for the bounty. Grove, a member of The Markus Brother, would have to be one of my favorite characters. His powers is really cool. By flatlining, he is able to control his spirit to do things his physical body can’t. Meier Link is another interesting fellow, as you think what’s his real motive. If he really loves Charlotte or is he planning something sinister.

The action in the movie is good. Not as violent or as gory as Ninja Scroll, but the cool factor is still high. And the animation is really high quality stuff. The only thing that annoyed me is one of the character’s eyes. A little too big. Other than that, the animation and the dark atmosphere meshes in perfectly to give you a gloomy feeling.

I think this is the only Anime I know of that has english as the original language. So for those of you who are “purists”, the english dub will be the only way to view this movie. The dub is good. It’s not bad to the point where you get annoyed, but good enough.

In conclusion, story is good, action is good, animation is good, dub is good, overall a really good movie. I like this more than the original Vampire Hunter D movie. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed. Unless you are a person who wants nudity in their anime, you will be disappointed.

Rudy Maxa is a great Host & gives us several tips which include even where to buy bus tickets, what to look for at a bus stop etc. there are maps of the location..all this & more, which should be helpfull to all foregin travellers who can sometimes get confused in places like these.

The photography & music are first grade & this is the next best thing to being there.

now for the drawbacks : There is just not enough of Italy shown, considering the storage capacity of Blu Ray discs a lot more could have been included. plus some extra features like interactive maps, best & worst seasons to visit, List of festivals & local Holidays, Important Italian phrases or words & their english translation etc should also have been included.

The images are stunning. It is in 1080i but still looks fantastic. Very informative. Rudy Maxa is interesting to listen to and he gives good tips for travelling in the areas he documents. I felt I had to review this blu-ray when I saw one of three reviews from someone who apparantly did not update their firmware and had problems watching the disk and rated this one star. There are other titles in this series including France and Italy which are also filmed beautifully and are interesting. Also video is 16:9 and not 1:33. Beautiful widescreen.

Just Another Girl on the I.R.T. is one of those early 90’s movies that was easy to miss if you weren’t looking for it. This movie really is a gem and director Leslie Harris worked really hard to bring her movie to the public. The film is a fictional account of a young woman named Chantal who lives in the projects who strives to graduate from high school early to become a doctor–and most of all to escape the projects. Chantal is street smart and sweet, but she gets sidetracked when she gets pregnant. This is a good movie to show in an educational setting but the language is a bit much at times. My biggest complaints are with the Artesian DVD release. It would have been nice to get some kind of commentary from the director. On top of that the chapter breaks are huge, meaning one chapter to the next includes several scenes. Another complaint is that the original film was small budget so the lightning is poor in some scenes, for instance in the scene where Chantal is in the park with Nattette and Lavonica you can barely see Natette’s face. It’s obvious there was no restoration to the film, it’s just kind of there. I am glad this film made it to DVD. It is one of the films we show the girls in my junior sorority during our teen pregnancy prevention program.

This movie really made you open your eyes and think about the consequences of sex. I saw it 10 years ago when I was sixteen and the movie really made me think twice about having sex. I just wish someone would make a movie like that in 2004 about
HIV/AIDS since people in the African-American community don’t believe it can happen to them.

I originally watched this documentary on the Sundance Channel. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it immensely and learned a lot about the sport of professional cycling. I am not a cycling fan. Nor do you need to be one to enjoy watching this documentary.

“Blood, Sweat + Gears” follows a relatively new pro-cycling team founded in 2007 named “Slipstream Chipotle”. “Slipstream Chipotle” is looking to make it big in the world of professional cycling. The goal of this particular pro-cycling team is to have pro-cycling team where all of the cyclists are free of using sports enhancing drugs (doping has apparently become quite pervasive/common place in the pro-cycling circuit), gain major sponsorship, and be invited to participate in the Tour de France.

In this documentary, we see this team meet all of its goals. The team has a strong anti-doping program to help ensure clean cyclists. “Slipstream Chipotle” does receive major sponsorship from Garmin and the team becomes known as “Garmin Slipstream”. “Garmin Slipstream” does receive the invitation to participate in the Tour de France where we are able to see their pro-cyclists participate in the 2008 Tour de France.

“Blood, Sweat + Gears” showcases some of “Garmin Slipstream’s” major pro-cyclists: Christian Vande Velde, Michael Friedman, David Millar, and Magnus Backstedt and more.

The “Garmin Slipstream” team is lead by Jonathan Vaughters, a former professional cyclist, who is is currently the CEO of Slipstream Sports and the director of of the professional touring team.

The flow of “Blood, Sweat + Gears” is great. It was wonderful to see what it is like to train as a pro-cyclist, the pressure of the sport in general and and so on.

“Blood Sweat + Gears”

Pumping Up for the Tour de France

Amos Lassen

The ProTour cycling club is the star of this inspirational film about preparing for the Tour de France. The club has two goals–winning and cleaning up the sport of cycling. This is a close look at cycling and what it means to be a competitor.

Following a year in the life of racing team Slipstream, director Nick Davis takes us to Boulder, Colorado where the team trains for the event. The members of the team express concern that the recent scandals about the use of drugs could possibly ruin the sport of cycling and they are determined to bring back the good name. We see what it takes to be a winner which includes the ability to suffer and the willingness to push to the extreme.

We meet Magnus Backstedt, a giant of a Swede who is a bit older and who plans to retire at the end of the coming year. There is Mike Friedman who returns to the sport after a serious injury and who wants to make the Olympic team. There is Danny pate whose marriage is falling apart because is so often away from home. Christian Vandeveld managed to get a fourth place win in the Tour de France and finally there is the manager, Jonathan Vaughters, who is very passionate about what he does and the sport. The members of the team have all agreed to participate without the use of any performance-enhancing drugs and to atone for what happened to former team member, David Miller, who makes a comeback after having been sidelined for a doping offense.

The movie is gorgeous to watch and the story is wonderful as we take a look into the lives of people who are dedicated to their sport and are willing to make sacrifices

This is definitely a breath of fresh air from mecha and fantasy, just in case you wanted a break. The truth is, even though this looks like the type of series where three girls prance around with no purpose, I’d be right to correct you. Honestly, there’s not much of a plot, but it’s interesting because it leaves you with mountains and rivers and valleys of questions.
The style is definitely one of its own, especially when it comes to the art. The music is bouncy and the ideas are original, and all the characters are very likable. Even the main antagonist you meet in episode 5 is awesome!
The first episode is a blow, but really all it’s doing is introducing the characters. And then there’s the slang, which isn’t offensive, but pretty annoying. Once you progress through the series it’s either you’re used to it, or you’ve heard so much that you don’t notice it. In either case, it’s not bad after the first DVD. Speaking of which, there’s a lot of swearing, a lot more than I expected for this series, and I suppose that’s why it’s 15+. The English VA’s are fine, but I’m a dub lover, so you’ll have to determine that for yourself ^_^; I also listened to the Japanese actors and they do phenominal work. The Aya voice is a lot better, anyway.
If you’re looking for something fun and lighthearted without fan service, then here you go.

Are you interested in fashion? Cute boys? Cliques? Lots of bright colors? If you do you will absolutely love this anime! If not, I suggest you move on and try something else. This is the kind of show I would have enjoyed when I was twelve years old. I’m no longer naive enough to believe a kick here, and a speech there, will suddenly change people. The main character Ran is a loud, obnoxious, cute, super strong girl who lives life all in a flurry. Her main concern is to have fun, fun, fun and more fun. She’s the only character I really liked, all the other characters are quite boring and don’t do much than stand around in the background unless a particular episode happens to revolve around them. Too bad for Ran-chan…if only this character had been in a different show…

The first time I heard of “Gangster No. 1″ was in the Globe And Mail. The one thing that intrigued me to find it upon it’s DVD release, was the front quote.

“It’s not who you know. It’s who you kill.”

Thus, my trip to Future Shop was to be a grand day on taking chances on films! Let me tell you, THIS MOVIE IS SUPERB. It does for gangster films in the same way Akira Kurosawa does for humanistic films, with a kick of style! For the first time, you don’t get constant gore & language, unlike Scorsese’s mafia flicks.

The year: 1968.

It brings forth a man known by the name of Gangster, who is extremely arrogant in his own way, to have a meeting with “The Butcher Of Mayfair,” Freddie Mays. Mays has just won a case against the city, in a matter of him killing a cop. An extremely well known man with the mafia who has just reached the top for whacking this crooked copper. But Mays is still having problems it seems. The problem? Lennie Taylor, another rival gang boss who plans to take out Freddie and capture his territory. But when Gangster hears of this (being as arrogant as he is), he pulls together a plan to take both of them out, leaving the rest for himself at the top. With an ending that’ll make you watch the movie over and over again, “Gangster No. 1″ is quite effectively THE crime drama of 2001, no doubt about it!

The other reviewer on this page who called this film a “character study” nailed it. The two lead gangsters Freddy Mays and (soon to be) gangster#1 could just as easily have been corporate execs., or two proball players, or….get the idea. This is a story about one mans driving, overwelming ambition to be #1, and what in the end is he left with when confronted with the man who was #1 but had it all stolen. More or less in a nut shell.
This is why any comparison to Goodfellas,et al is silly. The gangster life is window dressing, making the film more entertaining, yes ( if you like violence thats mostly implied, but implied well) but essential to the main theme. Gangsters are used here the same way Ann Rice uses vampires, to comment about the human condition.
Paul McGuigan directs well, using intresting camara techniques, and great lighting to show the lead characters descent into ambitious maddness. He uses music to its full effectiveness ( Reservoir Dogs ) with a rather happy “Because I Love You” adding to the evil menace of a murder scene which is the set piece of the film.
Needless ( I believe )to say the acting is primo.
This DVD edition has an informative featurette, and intresting if a little dry director commentary. I highly recommend for those who like serious character study ( but dont whine about the violence and language), as well as those who enjoy a fun little gangster flick. Its enough of both.

This long overdue collection deserves a place on your DVD shelf as much for archeological as entertainment value. The two Frank Tashlin-directed films (”The Girl Can’t Help It” and “Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter”), which parody the more garish aspects of Fifties life but manage to work equally well as celebrations of it, make this set worth the price. “The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw” is icing, provided by the otherwise formidable Raoul Walsh.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Jayne Mansfield Collection! Click Here

“The Girl Can’t Help It” is unlike any other film of its time, or of any other time for that matter. Equal parts comedy, love story, Hollywood musical, comic book fantasy, crass titillation, live action cartoon, and Rock `n’ Roll road show, it somehow succeeds in engaging the viewer to the point that he or she genuinely likes the main characters – even the felonious ones – and inexplicably soaring above and beyond the sum of its parts. Sentimentality is held in check by the adept lunacy of the script and the strategic inclusion of then-embryonic Rock acts, and perhaps it’s those acts that cause the film to transcend itself.

The Rock `n’ Roll, Rockabilly, and R&B stars, near misses, and never-would-be’s featured in TGCHI are showcased regally. This isn’t one of those low budget, black and white, Alan Freed-mentored Rocksploitation vehicles so common at the time. While the acts are presented in a traditional manner for popular musicians in movies (similar to the way, say, Glenn Miller or Harry James were in the `40s), they’re nevertheless the recipients of some perks that were usually reserved for A-list leading ladies and men, such as dramatic, “heroic” low angle shots, dollying boom shots, eye-popping color by de Luxe, and “the grandeur of Cinemascope”, suggesting that something bigger than life was being archived for the ages. Or at least in the cases of Little Richard, Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent, The Platters, and Fats Domino . . . the same can’t be said for The Chuckles, Johnny Olenn and a few others. But, after all, Rock `n’ Roll was still a new thing in 1956, foreign to an incredulous world of worrying adults. Many no doubt thought it a passing fad, a novelty – as a result, every type of youth act the kids might have possibly liked was thrown in for the purpose of reaping immediate dividends. Perhaps, strange as it may seem, they saw no difference between Little Richard and The Chuckles. On the other hand, the naivete of those otherwise long forgotten performers being included on the same bill as bona fide immortals adds a certain charm to the film, as well as a sense of time and place of an increasingly distant, innocent past.

I would advise first time viewers against listening to the running commentary feature while watching TGCHI – the “expert” chosen to comment is frequently off base in his assessment of the Big Picture, and his muffing the minutiae is an ongoing annoyance. As an example of the latter, he doesn’t seem to realize that the nickname of Edmond O’ Brien’s character is Fats – not “Fatso”, as he calls him at least a dozen times throughout the course of the commentary. And that’s NOT Phil Silvers delivering milk in the sequence of cartoon-like reactions to Jayne Mansfield’s contour assets. Silvers was a big enough star at the time (he had been a well-known comic since WWII, and “Bilko” was in the works in 1956) to require a close-up in a cameo appearance (not to mention at least one line, or a quick wisecrack). If you’re still not convinced, click the pause button and take a good look.

The (British) commentator is also oblivious to the “sock hop” phenomenon in the America of the era in which the film was made; he strains to find deeper meaning in the fact that the teenage audience dancing to the performances of Fats Domino and The Platters are not wearing shoes. It doesn’t take a heck of a lot of research to determine that sock hops, or informal dances, were often held in high school gyms (as is the one in the film), and that a participant would be obliged to adhere to the enforced prerequisite of removing his or her shoes in order to dance in stocking feet, thereby sparing the floor from scuff marks – or else suffer the wrath of the principal.

While film historian Dana Polan, who ably handles the running commentary on “Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter”, stretches his credibility a bit on occasion, he’s much more consistently on target than his TGCHI counterpart. For this picture, I would definitely recommend making the commentary part of your second viewing, if only to grasp the film’s place in history, as well as the very history it’s parodying. There’s more to ponder in WSSRH, an honest to goodness satire of the excesses of postwar affluence, the `50s advertising boom, the growing cult of celebrity, and the phenomenon of celeb worship that followed as part and parcel.

Tashlin may have been hedging his bets and having it both ways in TGCHI, but WSSRH is undeniably scathing satire. There’s palpable warmth permeating the former film, as well as a sense that the director wants us to feel some affection for the principles (beautifully played by Mansfield, the magnificent O’Brien, and “Seven Year Itch” alumnus Tom Ewell), which we do, and which is somewhat lacking – with few exceptions – in the latter film; in it Tashlin has bigger fish to fry.

As in TGCHI, the acting is vital to “Hunter’s” success; as over-the-top as many of these performances are (by necessity), they are subtly nuanced all the same. Mansfield puts in a very fine performance as sex kitten/starlet Rita Marlowe, against the incredibly talented Tony Randall – the geeky but ambitious Rockwell P. Hunter of the title. The versatile and indispensable Henry Jones, a key player in “Girl”, also shines, this time as Randall’s co-worker, despicably shameless ad-man Henry Rufus. (In “Girl” Jones was ingeniously understated – here he goes brilliantly for broke.) Joan Blondell is also memorable as Mansfield’s girl Friday.

But, to paraphrase Mousey in “The Girl Can’t Help It”, I don’t want to “louse ya up”, and leave you with the impression that these are heavy or deep films. Despite their worthiness for dissection and serious critique, it’s all really secondary to the fact that these are two very funny and enjoyable movies, on any level, and both are ideal for an evening of lounging on the couch with a bag of popcorn, forgetting your problems, and laughing your contour assets off.

Just got it — here is some more info since it’s sketchy above. All titles are listed as widescreen (2.35:1), in English stereo. These are all CinemaScope titles and they look quite good.

“Girl Can’t Help It” includes “Blonde Ambition,” an hourlong A&E “Biography” documentary; commentary by “film historian” Toby Miller; and original trailer. Spanish mono and subtitles.

“Will Success Spoil Rock Junter?” with commentary by “film historian” Dana Polan. Brief newsreel clip on Mansfield in the U.S. capital. The English audio actually appears to be in four-channel. Spanish stereo.

“Sheriff of Fractured Jaw” lists only a still gallery and the original theatrical teaser and trailer. French 4.0 LCRS and Spanish subtitles.

I love the newer episodes that are now on PBS, but really enjoyed these since I grew up watching them. Great dvd!

We were disappointed by this DVD. Our daughter loves the newer PBS Berenstain Bears, and we assumed this was the latest installment, because it was just released. Turns out this disk is simply recycled archives from the ’80s. Given that, they’re not terrible, but they’re nowhere near the quality of the new episodes, both in terms of the story lines and the production.
