Since it’s beginning in September of 1994, ER has been my favorite television shows. The great story lines and great characters that have appeared on this show have occupied my Thursday nights for 11 years.

While I still enjoy the show now, the prime of the show, at least to me, was in the beginning. With Anthony Edwards, George Clooney and Sherry Stringfield, plus Noah Wyle, Julianna Margulies and Eriq LaSalle, the early years were some of the best television hours ever.

Season three was one that saw a number of changes to the ER. Dr. Susan Lewis (Stringfield) left the ER for Phoenix. She returned a number of years later and is still part of the show, but her departure left a hole in the staff, not to mention, in the heart of fellow doc Mark Greene (Edwards). This season also saw the edition of Laura Innes to the regular cast. She appeared in season two as a recurring character and was added to the cast to start season three. Her character of Dr. Weaver has experienced some of the greatest changes of anyone since her arrival on the show.

Some of the key storylines early in this season involve Greene and Lewis, as there is an obvious romantic connection between the two, that leaves Greene feeling betrayed when she leaves. A highlight episode of the season was “Fear of Flying” where the two docs take a medivac chopper to a remote accident scene and save a family of four. Greene, who is one of my all time favorite television characters, also experiences a brutal attack in the restroom of the hospital and has a hard time readjusting as he returns to work.

Dr. Doug Ross (Clooney) begins the season as he ended the second, still moving from woman to woman, but when a woman whom he barely knows passes out at his apartment and eventually dies at County, he begins to change his ways, mainly pointing his affection in the direction of nurse Carol Hathaway (Margulies), who is also one of his exes. Clooney’s work with a homeless teen, portrayed excellently by Kirsten Dunst, is one of the great story arcs throughout the season.

As for Hathaway, she takes the medical school tests, and does incredibly well, but realizes that she likes being a nurse. As nurse manager, she takes on the administration with some solid results and also gets a highlight episode where she is caught in an armed robbery at a convenience store. It is in this episode that you see the true Carol Hathaway and her compassion for others. Ewan McGregor also does a great guest stint as one of the robbers.

Dr. John Carter (Wyle) looks so young, especially as I finished this past season watching him leave the show after 11 seasons. Carter has an affair with his superior, and also sees the death of one of his fellow surgical interns (guest star Omar Epps). He also begins to realize that he may have chosen the wrong elective, as he sees that his healing ways may be better suited for the ER, not the surgical unit.

Dr. Peter Benton (La Salle) is probably one of the best surgeons on the staff, but it is his people skills that make his turn in pediatrics a tough one. The death of intern Gant weighs heavily on Benton, but it is the birth of his son as the season comes to a close that really begins to change his ways. The Benton as father story line served the show well for a number of years until his eventual departure.

Weaver (Innes) is in almost constant combat with Greene. She has ideas that she tries to implement that just don’t sit well with the senior doc. Her kissing up to the bosses irks not only Greene, but a number of other staff members. She was not a likeable character for a long time, but that has changed over the last few years.

The one ER character that I never really cared for was PA Jeannie Boulet (Gloria Reuben). This season featured a lot of stories for her, as she battled her HIV status and considered relationships before reconciling with her ex. This character, although Reuben is a good actor, always seemed to be concerned with herself and nobody else and that always bothered me.

Additionally, this season saw some great guest and recurring stars. As mentioned, Dunst and Epps were key figures for many episodes, while William H. Macy and John Aylward continued there positions as hospital staffers. Jorja Fox came on board as Dr. Maggie Doyle and Veronica Cartwright won praise for her guest turn as the mother of a sick young man. Glenne Healy, cch Pounder, Kevin Tighe, Sam Anderson and Jamie Gertz were just a few of the many who had a presence in the ER. Maria Bello guest starred at the end of the season and was added to the staff in the next year.

There are two great commentary tracks, as well as two very good documentaries. One involves the Fear of Flying episode while the other deals with the support staff at the hospital, the nurses, desk clerks, etc. Both are very informative. There are also a great gag reel and some deleted scenes.

Of course I am biased, as this is my favorite show, but I don’t think you could find a finer group of actors and better story lines than this season of ER provided.

Nominated for 25 Golden Globes and 110 Emmys, including 7 for Outstanding Drama Series, ER has long been one of the best prime-time shows on television. Premiering in September 1994 on NBC, the hour-long hospital drama vividly illustrates the intensity and fast-paced stress endemic to hospital emergency rooms across America. Brought into being by Michael Crichton – famous Hollywood insider, novelist, and brains behind such films as Jurassic Park, Twister, and Timeline – ER fulfills its creator’s ultimate vision (it took over a decade of pitching the show before network executives bit) for a close-to-life glimpse of the technology and the humanity omnipresent in the ER. Since its inception, many cast members have passed through the halls of ER, many of them having gone on to become big stars in Hollywood…

ER follows the exploits of a group of emergency room staff who work in a busy Chicago hospital. The show attempts to examine every detail of the ER experience. From the exhilaration of saving a life to the tedium caused by mountains of paperwork, all the highs and lows are covered. In the show’s first year, a number of regular faces staffed the ER. Doctors Mark Greene (Anthony Edwards), Peter Benton (Eriq La Salle), Douglas Ross (George Clooney), and Susan Lewis (Sherri Stringfield) were regulars in the ER along with Head Nurse Carol Hathaway (Julianna Margulies) and Benton’s medical student understudy (and later ER doctor), John Carter (Noah Wyle)… Any given episode tends to run multiple plot lines throughout the show, interweaving scenes in short snippets intended to heighten audience emotion and create the aura of a stress-laden atmosphere. The show’s high drama, coupled with subplots of the staffers’ personal lives and the display of cutting edge medical technology, combine to make ER one of most adrenaline-inducing programs in television history…

The ER (Season 3) DVD features a number of dramatic episodes including the season premiere “Dr. Carter, I Presume” in which Carter begins his internship at the ER with a difficult day filling in for Peter as the ER surgery consultant. Meanwhile, several plotlines related to the staffers’ personal lives take twists when Carol runs into Shep and his new girlfriend and Peter runs into an old friend at a barbecue… Other notable episodes from Season 3 include “No Brain, No Gain” in which Peter fights to save the life of a gang member already declared dead by Doug, and “The Long Way Around” in which Carol is held hostage during a robbery at a local store…

Below is a list of episodes included on the ER (Season 3) DVD:

Magnum P.I. is my favorite TV show of all time. Season 3 is my 2nd favorite season. (Season 2 is my favorite.)

Here are the episodes from season 3:

Did You See the Sunrise? – This 2 hour episode is my favorite episode of this season. This is a complex tale about the Vietnam War, a POW camp, physical and psychological torture, brainwashing, and assassination. This episode helped to define the intensity and seriousness of the series. Magnum has some very traumatic flashbacks to the Vietnam War. This is the episode that introduces the Maggie Poole character. This is also the episode where Higgins constructs his model of the Bridge On The River Kwai. We find out that Magnum’s favorite movie is Stalag 17. This episode is classic Magnum all the way through.

Ki’s Don’t Lie – This is the first part of a crossover with the TV series Simon and Simon. Morgan Fairchild also appears. An old Hawaiian statue brings trouble to anyone who possesses it. The complete story, including the Simon and Simon episode, appeared as bonus material on the season 1 DVD set.

The Eighth Part of the Village – Magnum goes to the loading dock to pick up a package for Higgins. The package contains a surprise.

Past Tense – T.C. is forced at gunpoint to fly into a prison and help one of the prisoners escape.

Black on White – This wonderful episode creates some humorous odd couple type moments as Magnum and Higgins are quarantined together in the guest house because they may have been exposed to “African Hemorrhagic Fever.” Meanwhile, Higgins is being targeted for assassination by an African Mau Mau who is sneaking around the estate. We hear some fascinating stories about Higgins’s military experiences in Kenya. Hearing that handheld Pac-Man game always cracks me up. Bibi Kiamini is such a babe!

Flashback – Magnum wakes up in the year 1936. Other than that, everything else is the exact same as it always is. This fantasy episode is highly enjoyable.

Foiled Again – Higgins enters a fencing competition. During the competition, Higgins kills his opponent. Oops!

Mr. White Death – Ernest Borgnine appears as a professional wrestler.

Mixed Doubles – Magnum is the bodyguard/babysitter for a spoiled brat teenager who also happens to be a professional tennis champion. Her character is so deliberately awful that the episode is kind of fun, in a cheesy sort of way. Just don’t take this one too seriously, and I think you’ll enjoy it.

Almost Home – Magnum has to clear the name of a World War II soldier who was wrongly court martialed.

Heal Thyself – Magnum has to help an old military friend who has been falsely accused of murder.

Of Sound Mind – Roscoe Lee Browne appears as Magnum’s butler. Yes, Magnum has a butler, because he just inherited $50 million dollars. This crazily fun episode is a wonderfully humorous satire. The masquerade party is quite interesting.

The Arrow That Is Not Aimed – Magnum befriends a Samurai warrior, who is trying to protect a valuable ancient porcelain plate from 6 ninjas. This is a wonderful tale of friendship, action, adventure, and humor. I love the way that Magnum finds out which plate is the real one. This is a great episode.

Basket Case – Magnum acts as social worker for a teenager who lives with foster parents. (Yeah, yeah. I know. Not every episode is a winner.)

Birdman of Budapest – In this relatively bad episode, a guest on the estate is driving Higgins crazy. (And no, I’m not talking about Magnum.)

I Do? – In order to solve a case, Magnum pretends to be married.

Forty Years From Sand Island – Magnum tries to find out what really happened at a World War II Japanese internment camp.

Legacy From A Friend – Magnum has to solve a murder case.

Two Birds Of a Feather – This horrible episode was to be the pilot for a new spinoff series. Fortunately, the new series was never made.

By Its Cover – Magnum helps protect an old friend from a corrupt police officer.

The Big Blow – This is a cheesy satire of Key Largo. With a hurricane in progress, several guests are trapped at the estate. All the usual cliches are there, including a woman who is 9 months pregnant.

Faith and Begorrah – This masterpiece of an episode continues a running joke that was started in “The Elmo Ziller Story” from season 2: around the time of World War I, Higgins’s father served in the British military. As a result, Higgins has many illegitimate half brothers and illegitimate half sisters scattered all over the world. Naturally, this causes much embarrassment for Higgins. This time, the half brother is an Irish priest. Note how Zeus and Apollo react when Higgins tells Magnum, “He’s… illegitimate.” The desk clerk at the hotel is played by Donald P. Bellisario, the guy who created the Magnum P.I. series.

I completely agree with the previous reviewer. I think Magnum, P.I. is a fantastic show, one that I definitely wanted to own on DVD. I had previously bought the first two seasons and had no problems with the DVDs. However, I’ve had nonstop problems with the discs from Season 3. Many episodes skip terribly, or stop in the middle and bring you back to the menu screen. One episode won’t play at all! I’m extremely frustrated trying to watch these DVDs, and I feel ripped off. For all the money these sets cost, you’d expect them to be top quality! It’s too bad for such a great show.

This is rather funny and strange… I’m an 18 year old Senior now, and I can still remember seeing this movie, as a 9 year old kid lounging on my couch. The scary part is that all my friends remember this movie too. I could be bored in calculus, and start hummin’ “Pippi Longstockings is comin’ into your world,” and within 10 seconds at least 10 other kids are singin along. None of us understand how or why we remember it, (maybe it had to do with the fact that every guy had a crush on Pippi when he was about 10. Her and Punky Brewster) Anyway, I just wanted to write this to say it could definately be a great thing for your kid, it made an impact on about 1/5 of my high school graduating class. (by the way, if anyone knows how to reach, or knows how or find out what happened to Tami Erin,[she was so cool]send me an E-mail pleeeze) —thanks

The setting of Pippi Longstocking’s home is supposed to be Sweden, in this movie it’s relocated to America. That was perhaps unfaithful to the books- but this version of Pippi manages to be sweet and endearing in spite of this.

I’ve read a lot of negative reviews of this movie- I’m not exactly sure how many people don’t like this movie, but I happen to think it sweet and charming for people of all ages.

The performances by the actors in this manage to recreate magic in a different setting. Tami Erin gives a positively charming performance as a little girl- she manages to give Pippi the trademark innocence, oddness, and yet she manages to give Pippi a sort of beginning of wisdom as well. Tami conveys the hurt and pain as Pippi is aquainted with the realities of kids who are unloved, her friend Annika’s father’s dislike of her, and the gradual evaporation of the magic of her childhood. She manages to make Pippi human and accesible while still making her an enduring, endearing figure. Some people refer to her as ‘’spoiled brat”, but I think her reaction toward these adults was more her shock that her cheer could not please them. The adventures between her and Tommy and Annika were sweetly shown, and it can end in Pippi’s understanding of what she’s done.

I have seen the other versions of Pippi and Inger Neillson portrays Pippi as a strange, detached, though not charmless character- but she is in no way human or accessible.

The songs are cute too- they manage to show Pippi’s enduring innocence, and her good-hearted spirit.

I would recommend this movie to people of all ages ready to see a new version of the sweet, charming Pippi- Tami Erin was a charming young actress, I don’t know why she didn’t persue acting after this.

Something Weird’s Drive-in Double Feature series just keeps growing and continues with this ridiculous double feature. Back in the days when the laws were creatively skirted to bring us “adult” entertainment the nudie was born. As nudity in an of itself was not considered obscene, from the late 50’s until the birth and acceptance of hardcore, if one wanted to see an adult film one had to see a nudie. For the most part these were films set in a nudist camp where we could watch for a long boring hour or so people playing volleyball, swimming, dancing etc. in the nude. As this got boring very quickly some enterprising film makers tried to add some sort of a storyline to the scenes of volleyball. Thus among other sub-genres the monster nudie was born.

This disc features two films, 6 (!) shorts, 5 trailers for other nudies (plus one hidden trailer for “Girls Come Too” which is a real classic; just click around in the various menus, you’ll find it.), the gallery of drive-in exploitation art, drive-in intermission bits and the option of watching any of these separately or all together as a part of the “let’s go to the drive-in” feature. This disc is crammed with stuff.

The films themselves are wonderfully awful. The Beast that Killed Women is about a gorilla loose in a nudist camp that, you guessed it, kidnaps and kills a few women. The gorilla is the fakest looking suit I’ve yet seen.

The Monster at Camp Sunshine is a gem. It begins with an animation sequence that makes no sense and is reminiscent of the animation in Monty Python’s Flying Circus. It has intentional humor that actually works and a story line that is bizarre to say the least. It is about a chemical that unleashes the killer instinct getting into the water at a nudist camp. The gardener, who is supposed to be retarded, drinks some water and turns into a monster that looks like Moe Howard from the Three Stooges. Although he’s not very threatening it takes the army to kill him, peace is restored and nudism is affirmed as a healthy way of life. Classic.

Overall a good set. I’d recommend it.

Actually, looking at this DVD can be a lot of fun. The acting is low budget, but all the extras on this DVD make for a fun afternoon or evening when the weather is bad. There is a lot of nudity, but this is the nudity of the mid 60’s, so expect lots of breasts and tushes, but no frontal nudity. In fact, some of the men are wearing swimming trunks. The Beast is in color and is set in a Florida nudist club (or so they say), and most of the actors sport a full tan, contrasted to a lot of ‘whitetails’ in the Monster of Camp Sunshine, which is in B&W. When the final assault on the monster is shown for the Camp Sunshine film, it is a mismash of civil war, Korean War, WWI and WII stock footages, and perhaps even some western calvary charges. It was as if every stock fighting footage the producers could get were thrown in, and is quite hilarious. The extras on this DVD are quite interesting, including a 1920’s nudist serial which is actually quite fascinating and perhaps the best of the extras. Obviously, getting the DVD is preferred to the video version, due to all the extras which can provide an interesting insight to how nudity was depicted under the new relaxation of censorship that took place in the early 1960’s. Considering how old the source material is, the quality of the DVD is actually quite good. This DVD can provide a lot of fun and laughs.

“Water” is the third film in writer/director Deepa Mehta’s elemental trilogy, following “Fire” and “Earth”. It explores the plight of widows in traditional Hindu culture, where women are condemned to a grim, rudimentary existence after their husbands die. Driven by characters as much as by its cause, this is not a bleak film. On the contrary, “Water” is breathtakingly beautiful. In India in 1938, young Chuyia (Sarala) is widowed at the age of 8. By religious law, when a man dies, his wife may either be cremated with him, marry his brother, or live the life of an ascetic -chaste, poor, and pious. Chuyia’s head is shaved, her jewelry removed, and she is sent to live in an ashram with other widows of all ages. She is befriended by a pretty widow named Kalyani (Lisa Ray), watched over by the devout and generous Shakuntula (Seema Biswas), and often at odds with the ashram’s callous matriarch Madhumati (Manorama), who pays the rent by prostituting Kalyani. A handsome law student with progressive politics, Narayan (John Abraham), is smitten by Kalyani. But it is sinful for widows to remarry, and Kalyani is a prostitute besides.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Water! Click Here

The story of making “Water” is a drama in itself. Filming in India in 2000 was shut down by violent protests by religious fundamentalists, who believed the film was anti-Hindu. Deepa Mehta’s view is that a misinterpretation of religious texts has perpetuated the dreadful state of widows in Indian culture, which is actually the result of economics. If a widow is sent away upon the death of her husband, her own family does not have to pay to feed or house her, and her would-be inheritance remains in her husband’s family. In any case, there were riots, Deepa Mehta was burned in effigy, and the film’s sets were thrown into the river. Four years later, the film was recast and the production moved to Sri Lanka, where filming began again. All of the temples and buildings that you see are sets by production designer Dilip Mehta. Sarala, who plays Chuyia, is Sri Lankan and does not speak a word of Hindi. She learned all of her lines phonetically. Somehow that doesn’t even seem odd amid this international cast and creative crew.

Giles Nuttgens’ cinematography is a force in this film. Everything appears so alive and luminous that I wanted to step into this world to be bathed in its beautiful light and touch its delicate features. The light has a striking purity. The film’s score by Canadian Mychael Danna and songs by Indian composer A.R. Rahman are an ideal auditory accompaniment to “Water”’s visual splendor. Although it focuses our attention on the plight of widows in India, “Water” is not a realistic film on the narrative level. Kalyani and Narayan are idealized characters. She is pure, lovely, and suffering. He educated, and socially progressive. To Narayan, Kalyani is a romantic figure, a fragile, innocent soul in need of rescuing. The idea that a wealthy, educated man would want to marry an illiterate peasant prostitute who will never understand his causes or his world view seems far-fetched. But Kalyani’s reticence and Narayan’s sensitivity draw us in. Narayan is a change of pace for John Abraham, who is an Indian supermodel and Bollywood star. Lisa Ray is Canadian, also a supermodel in India, but Hindi is not her first language. Director Deepa Mehta has a real talent for casting the perfect actors from seemingly unlikely choices.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Water! Click Here

For all of Kalyani and Narayan’s beauty and sympathy, “Water” is not their film. Shakuntula is the character who has an arc, and Seema Biswas gives the film’s great performance. She personifies the conflict between conscience and faith that is at “Water”’s core. (You many remember Seema Biswas from her lead role in “Bandit Queen”.) Manorama, who has acted in an extraordinary 1301 movies, is memorably sharp as the matriarch Madhumati. Professor of Hindi literature Dr. Vidula Javalgekar plays the kindly, sweet-toothed, elderly widow Patiraji, a woman who must be very unlike herself. “Water” is simply a gorgeous sensory experience that movie-lovers won’t want to miss. In Hindi (and some Sanskrit) with English or Spanish subtitles or English captions.

The DVD (20th Century Fox 2006): “Behind the Scenes” (20 min) includes interviews with writer/director Deepa Mehta and the cast. Mehta talks about the controversy surrounding the film and its themes. The actors discuss Mehta’s directing style, mastering the period mannerisms, and their characters. “The Story Behind the Making of Water” (4 min) is about the controversy and the ill-fated first attempt to film “Water”. There is a good, continuous audio commentary by Deepa Mehta in which discusses the sets, actors, character development, cinematography and lighting, the film’s score, and provides additional information about Indian culture.

When I was in film school, I remember a professor showing an Indian film called “Panther Panchali”. Despite the terrible print, I could see director Satyajit Ray was an artist. “Panchali” is a beautiful film about a poor Indian family living through the monsoon season. I then went on to discover some of his other films. A couple of years ago, Merchant Ivory hosted a retrospective of Ray’s films and these restored prints are available on DVD. You are depriving yourself if you do not watch these films.

As I watched “Water”, the new film from director Deepa Mehta, I was constantly reminded of Ray’s films. The composition, pacing, subject matter and acting style are all the same.

Chuyia (Ronica Sajnani Sarala), a seven year old girl, finds she has become a widow; her arranged husband has died leaving her adrift in a society that favors men. Religious law dictates if she lives a chaste life she will join her husband in heaven. Of course, she doesn’t know or understand any of this when her family takes her to a home, to live with other widows. She soon meets the matriarch of the house, Sadananda (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), a fat woman who eats the most food, Shakuntala (Seema Biswas), a bitter woman who shows some compassion to Chuyia and Kalyani (Lisa Ray), a young woman who is allowed to grow her hair out and meet `clients’ to help support the house. Soon, Chuyia meets Narayana (John Abraham), a bachelor from a rich family who is instantly attracted to Kalyani. As their relationship grows, there are murmurs of Gandhi leading the Indian people to independence from Britain.

Deepa Mehta has crafted a beautiful film depicting a sad reality in India’s history. As one character states, families used this religious practice to free themselves of a financial burden and another mouth to feed. In this belief, there are three ways of dealing with a widow; marry her to a younger brother of the deceased male, have her join her husband on the funeral pyre, or banish her to a house to live with other widows until she dies and rejoins her husband in Heaven. Of course, if a wife dies, the husband is free, encouraged to remarry. After Mehta establishes the details of this practice, she introduces us to the main characters, the people who will inhabit the story we are about to watch. There are people from every generation in this house; “Auntie” is an elderly widow who still dreams of the sweets she had at her wedding, when she was seven, Sadananda seems to be a gang leader, or pimp, sending Kalyani out to meet married men, to help support the house and her eating habits. Sadly, every generation is represented.

The growing relationship between Kalyani and Narayana is very believable and touching. Indian tradition and the difficulties of Kalyani’s position dictate they must behave in a certain way. But Narayana is a modern Indian man and he soon tells his mother he and Kalyani will be married. When his mother finds out his intended bride is a widow, she is shocked and won’t allow it. But Narayana has no doubt that he will wed his lover, all it takes is some convincing.

As the story moves towards its emotional climax, Shakuntala becomes the voice of reason. She helps Kalyani get out of the house to meet her lover and eventually helps other members of the house.

Mehta composes every shot with a painter’s eye. Vivid colors poke out throughout every frame, colors so bright they appear to be painted on the screen. As we watch these characters struggle to live in the house, they make infrequent trips outside to bathe, walk, and experience. Inside the house, everyone wears a sari made of the same natural cloth and everything is rather drab. But as they explore the neighboring community, we see women wearing bright saris, vivid flowers and bright gold, copper and silver. The difference between the two worlds is very noticeable and helps to contrast the living conditions of the two different groups.

Ray used the same attention to detail in his films creating beautiful compositions in black and white.

Both filmmakers chose similar subject matter. Like Ray before her, Mehta has chosen a fairly simple, straight forward story. Because the story doesn’t have a lot of distractions, it allows you to concentrate on the characters and give them your attention. The actors provide vivid, interesting portrayals that compliment the story.

“Water” is a very good film. Search it out and you will be rewarded.

I have been religiously reading the book series ever since it first came out, so when I heard about the TV show, I had extremely high expectations, and must say I was not at all happy with the first episode. I could not believe the way that they had completely changed the look of some of the main characters. So for a while I stopped watching the show, but my curiousity got the best of me, and after it came back after having been on hiatus for a while, I resumed watching it, and I admit, I was hooked.

Although many things are completely different than the book series, the show still has that provacative, addictive edge that will keep you coming back for more.

Now, if you are a fan of the books, such as myself, yet have never seen the show before, I feel this are some things I must warn you about.

First of all, many of the storylines that happen on the show, never happened in the book. I won’t go into detail about any of the plots though, because I don’t want to give anything away.

I was a bit angry about everything being so different at first, but then after having thought about it rationally for a while, I realize that this is after all a TV show, and if they went exactly by the book, chapter for chapter, then the show certainly wouldn’t have enough plots to last for more than one season!

Second of all, (the thing that disappointed me most) the characters of Dan, Rufus, Jenny, and Vanessa look extremely different on the show, than the way that they are described in the book. Drastically different, in fact. And in the books, Serena has a hot older brother, yet on the show, he turns into her younger brother.

But they did get a few of the characters right.

The extremely sexy Chace Crawford makes THE perfect Nate Archibald…in fact he may even be more delicious on the show than the way they describe him in the book! The only flaw that he has is that in the book he is a chronic stoner, but not on the show, although that’s really no big deal.

The lovely Leighton Meester makes a wonderful Blair, actually coming very close to the way I had imagined her to be in the book, and the same goes for the beautiful Blake Lively, who plays the role of Serena.

And then we come to Ed Westwick, who plays the role of Chuck Bass. I am extremely impressed. He makes the perfect Chuck, from the way he looks, right down to his personality.

So yes, ill admit I started off being very critical, but now I consider myself a fan of the show, and am eagerly awaiting for it to come out on DVD, as well as for the new season to begin.

If your a fan of the books, who started out skeptically as I did, then I feel that you should give the show a chance. You might find that you actually enjoy it!

I don’t think I can sum up this show in such few words…

- Best location ever (show is shot ON SITE in New York City). It is the most popular show in NYC for a reason!

- Hottest cast on television

- Two of the best actors to hit CW (Leighton Meester who plays Blair Waldorf and Ed Westwick who plays Chuck (was listed as one of the “Most Underrated Actors of 2007′)

- While OC had great Indie Music, Gossip Girl also has great music that is more “mainstream”

This show was by far the most buzzed about show in 2007-2008 (heck..the most talked about show in the last 10 YEARS!!) and for good reason! If you open ANY magazine, any blog site, Gossip Girl is mentioned at least five times!

It is addictive, the storylines are fascinating, and the show is WELL WRITTEN and witty (one of the very few teen shows that is loved by many critics!).

I was drawn in to Gossip Girl because of Josh Schwartz and his work with the OC and because it was based on a book. True, Gossip Girl is different than the book but its a GREAT CHANGE. Personally, I never loved the books as much as I love the series.

However, like many Gossip Girl fans, I became OBSESSED with Gossip Girl the minute Chuck/Blair happened. This type of couple has NEVER been shown on television ever. Their chemistry is amazing, the banter, bite, and the acting by these two costar far exceeds any of the other actors on the show. Not suprising, that in a span of a few days they became the most talked about couple. This couple is so popular they these two have been the cause for major ratings increases for various GG episodes…CW knows this couple=$$ and ratings and this is why Chuck/Blair will most likely become the main focus of season 2 which was previously held by Dan/Serena(starts on Monday September 1st at 8PM on the CW)!

If you are not sure about Gossip Girl, watch to episode 7 (Victor/Victorla) and I guarantee you won’t be you won’t be able to stop. The only downside of this show is that it is HIGHLY ADDICTIVE!

True, Gossip Girl will never reach the critical acclaim of Battlestar Galactica and Friday night lights..but is BY FAR exceeded my expecations to become my FAVOURITE SHOW ON TELEVISION!

Unfortunately, Little Shop of Horrors and every other Roger Corman Filmgroup production lapsed into public domain years ago and have generally been available on VHS and DVD only in poor-quality editions ranging from merely bad to atrocious. (The only Filmgroup features to get a decent official or semi-official release so far are Bucket of Blood, Beast from Haunted Cave, and Night Tide.) After researching every DVD version of Little Shop of Horrors available (there are at least eight!) I played a hunch and went with GoodTimes to replace my VHS copy, and I’m very pleasantly surprised at the overall excellent quality of the source print. When I saw the “preserved using the best available elements” line at the beginning of this disc I thought ‘yeah, right,’ but I have to admit that this is the brightest, cleanest, sharpest (if not exactly razor-sharp) print of this film I’ve ever seen. The black level, contrast, gray values, and shadow/highlight detail are fine, and physical damage is limited only to some very light speckling and blemishing (!!). On the downside, the transfer itself seems to be somehow deficient (low bit rate?), causing areas of flat white or smoothly gradated grays in the image to exhibit some very faint but noticeable pixelation or banding, especially during the opening credit sequence (areas of flat color seem to be DVD’s Achilles Heel). The casual viewer probably won’t notice this phenomenon unless it’s pointed out, but it’s there. That said, the superior quality of the source print more than makes up for this one barely noticeable flaw; this is still most likely the best edition yet available of this classic ’sick humor’ gem and well worth the bargain price. It definitely blows away every TV print and cheapjack PD video version I’ve ever eyeballed. Grab this before it goes out of print.
The movie itself still entertains tremendously today, a funny, goofy (dare I say charming?) horror-comedy that basically plays like a stage farce (most of the action takes place on one or two sets). The story is essentially a remake of Bucket of Blood with a change in locale and a few fresh twists. This time Jonathan Haze portrays everyschlep Seymour Krelboine, who lives with his alcoholic hypochondriac mother (she listens to KSIK radio) and works at Mushnick’s skid row flower shop. Seymour (temporarily) finds fame, fortune, and romance by nurturing (and eventually murdering for) an exotic talking cannibalistic plant. Mel Welles, in his finest hour (literally), steals nearly every scene with his droll portrayal of perpetually exasperated Gravis Mushnick, and Jackie Joseph (Andy Griffith Show, Who’s Minding the Mint) seems born to play pretty, ditzy Audrey. Corman regulars adding to the fun include Dick Miller (Walter Paisley in Bucket of Blood) as Fouch, a flower-eating client, John Shaner as a sadistic dentist, and 14th-billed Jack Nicholson (featured prominently on most tape and disc box art) as his masochistic patient. Shot on a shoestring in just three days (at least all the interiors), Little Shop holds up better than many big-budget comedies of the day (anyone watched Story of Mankind lately?). Much credit must be given to Charles B. Griffith, unsung hero/architect of the AIP/Allied Artists/Corman style. His list of credits reads like Corman’s greatest hits: It Conquered the World, Attack of the Crab Monsters, The Undead, Not of This Earth, Teenage Doll, Bucket of Blood, Beast from Haunted Cave, Wild Angels, Death Race 2000, etc. Griffith’s clever, witty screenplay is a model of late-50s sick humor, working in a dead-on Dragnet parody, some wonderful malapropisms and bits of wordplay, lotsa Yiddish humor, and a handful of his patented icky-creepy moments. (Griffith also voiced the plant, Audrey Jr., played a few walk-ons, and directed some second unit scenes, all uncredited.) Fred Katz’s memorable score is alternately goofy and spy-jazzy, and, unlike some of Roger Corman’s other attempts at comedy (e.g. Creature from the Haunted Sea), I find his touch just right here, ably supporting Griffith’s verbal bits with complementary editing patterns (check Sgt. Joe Fink and Det. Frank Stoolie’s hilarious introductory scene). Lighter in tone and a bit broader and more farcical than Bucket of Blood (which I personally prefer), Little Shop, judged on its own terms, is still fresh and engaging, though the low budget is obvious at times. I’m not sure how fans of the Broadway show or movie musical will react to the original (I admit to being a purist myself), but if they share a taste for low budget horror or 50s-style sick humor they’ll probably find it an offbeat treat.

Roger Corman’s Original 1960 version of “The Little Shop Of Horrors” is considered by many as a true cult classic comedy of B-Movies,even the most respected of film critics.Unfortunately depending on the tastes and opinions of film fans that were used to seeing this legendary film comedy through the public domain since there was a lack of copyright in the titles,(same thing had happen to “Night Of The Living Dead”) and for many years since the dawn of the videocassette and late late movie shows, those versions were vastly inferior and often poor-looking in terms of presentation and contrast. Now the great folks at Legend Films have finally put out a brand-new definitive and excellent restored presentation of this cult hit on DVD in both the original black & white version as well as the disc’s main presentation of showcasing a brand-new restored digitally colorized version too.As with previous selected Legend releases of classic horror/B-movies in their DVD series, the disc features a well-done and at times hilarious commentary by MST3K’s Mike Nelson and the great thing is that you can listen to the track on both versions of the film, giving the b&w version sort of a MST3K-flavor to it (I love how he refers to the opening Filmgroup logo as little Reese Cups !).Despite packaging claims that is the first time the film has been colorized,it’s actually the second colorized incarnation of the film.First colorized on videocassette in the very late ’80’s with lousy and at times amateur results, this Legend version completely blows away the first attempt and looks like it was actually filmed in color, but of course this films’ legendary budgetary constraints prevented from actually filming it in color.Of course lets not forget that the film features a very very young Jack Nicholson,in his fourth film role,in a memorable role as a crazy dentist patient.I must say, this Legend version of “Little Shop” is probably the most superior and sharpest looking out of all the previous versions of the film that you’re possibly going to see and no wonder it was transferred from an excellent 35mm print of the film ! Other extras, besides the Nelson commentary, round out the package including both restored color/unrestored b&w trailers to “Little Shop”,and the following colorized trailers for “Plan 9 From Outer Space”,”House On Haunted Hill”,”Carnival Of Souls”,and “Reefer Madness”.Plus a gallery of nine man-eating plants,if any kids are planning to do a school project on man-eating plants, this could actually be a fun reference guide, and also a very short clip called “Man Eating Plants” which is actually the president of Legend Films Barry Sandrew vigorously eating vegetable plants such as celery (always eat your vegetables folks !).Well-done packaging, excellent eye-catching menus and a sparkling transfer of both versions will definitely please any film buff, both Hollywood and B-Movie fans alike ! This is by far one of the first best DVD releases of 2006 and is highly recommended for old and new fans alike instead of those who only prefer the 1986 spectacular Frank Oz musical remake with Rick Moranis and Steve Martin.Highly recommended !

UPDATE 11/24/06:

Just Recently,Buena Vista Home Entertainment in association with Roger Corman have finally released an “authorized” DVD release of “Little Shop Of Horrors” as well as a nicely restored original black & white version of Nicholson’s debut film “The Cry Baby Killer”.Unfortunately, the recent disc’s presentation of “Little Shop” is in fact the ORIGINAL colorized version, slightly mentioned above, that was first produced and eventually released to video in 1987 by Color Systems Technology. The source print used for the color version (other than the fact that the quality was directly copied off a video master for the DVD) is surprisingly in quite good condition, but it really truly is one of the worst examples of 1980’s colorization technology I’ve ever seen and will probably be the last. The colors are often the same as certain objects (ie: the outside of Mushnick’s Shop and the greens for the flowers, etc.),tons of continuity errors (ie: clothing, signs, etc.) and does anybody wish to care seeing Audrey Jr. looking like a talking watermelon plant? Reportedly, that color version was authorized by none other than Corman himself and it’s easy to see why many directors above his stature hate and disregard colorization.Nicholson/Corman fans alike aren’t going to be impressed with that bust of a release and it’s very easy to see why the ‘87 colorized version was out of circulation for many years.Easier said than done, the newly restored Legend Films release is by far, hands down, the real winner due to the technology, version options, and bonus materials !

If “Hair” were only a period piece, it would still be wonderful entertainment – but it’s so much more. Previous reviewers have already spoken for me in praising this film’s astonishing energy, its fine acting (not stereotypes, but iconic characters), and its forever-fresh-as-a-summer-flower soundtrack. I can only agree with them completely, and add my positive vote to theirs. This is a highly (no pun intended) recommended film!

But I’d like to emphasize something else now. Those reviewers who complain about the film being dated are missing an important point. Love, friendship, joy, exuberance – these things are never out of date. And it raises an interesting question: why are some people so embarrassed and downright afraid of the so-called “hippie-dippy” aspect of this movie, and the years it captures so well? Possibly because it goes against the current wisdom, which claims that the uglier and nastier and more downbeat something is, the truer it is.

Well, no one is claiming that this is a perfect world – far from it! – but there is still plenty of joy and beauty and magic to be found in it! Yes, in too many ways it’s a more cynical world now … which is all the more reason to celebrate and uphold those naïve, utterly necessary values. Don’t be afraid of looking foolish, don’t worry about having to be cool and detached all the time, don’t be afraid to embrace the Universe and exult in it – let the sunshine in!

I saw “Hair” three times in two days when it first came out in the theaters, and I have watched it every chance I’ve had since then. I was 12 when the Vietnam War ended, but the anti-war passion of this film hits me anyway. Beyond that, there are great performances by Treat Williams, Beverly D’Angelo (who, as one other reviewer pointed out, is one of the great underrated actresses working today) and John Savage. And beyond THAT there is the astonishing music — “Aquarius” (sing along, now), “Hair”, “I Got Life” and “Let the Sun Shine”, which makes tears run down my face every time I see it, even if I see it for the 100th time. This is a magnificent piece of filmmaking, and I don’t care if the Broadway show was better or different or more soulful or whatever — each product stands or falls on its own. “Hair” stands proud 20 years after it was made, and I think it’s going to stand proud for a long time to come. To the reader in Israel — I hope you get to go to Woodstock!

Following their release of Artur Rubinstein’s Grieg, Chopin and Saint-Saëns concertos, Deutsche Grammophon issues another fascinating programme about the great pianist, recorded two years earlier, in August 1973, at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Rubinstein can be heard and seen in Beethoven’s 3rd and Brahms’s 1st, both accompanied by the Concertgebouw Orchestra under Bernard Haitink.

Produced by the same team, with Hugo Käch directing, the great Max Wilcox who had been recording Rubinstein since 1959 as audio producer, and Robert Hofer responsible for the photography, this DVD provides further insight in the artistry of one of the most significant pianists of the previous century in the indian summer (”autumn” would be too strong a word for the 86-year old Rubinstein) of his career. Rubinstein at this point approached both concertos with an unforced, patrician distance, avoiding all excesses in sound and tempi, as if he wants to let the music speak for itself, at times almost turning it into chamber music. It’s an old master returning once more to these works he has played, loved and explored for decades. Yet there’s no sign of fatigue or errancy. Very few have been able to make this music sing with such freshness, clarity of line and naturalness of declamation as Rubinstein did. The Largo and the Adagio sections boast a mesmerizing serenity and almost nocturnal quality. Eventually, the simplicity of his music-making, the humanity reflecting Rubinstein’s own rich vision of life, have something profoundly touching.

Schubert’s Impromptu in A flat major (D. 899/4), Brahms’s Capriccio in B flat minor, op. 76/2 and his Intermezzo in B flat minor, op. 117/2, Chopin’s Scherzo in B flat minor, op. 31 are concluding the programme and are much in the same vein.

Soundwise the “Artur Rubinstein in concert” DVD is preferable to the earlier release because of the warmer acoustics of the Concertgebouw hall which seem to suit Rubinstein’s lyrical and spacious approach better. The playing of the Concertgebouw Orchestra under Bernard Haitink also boasts more character than the London Symphony under a neutral and often bland André Prévin. The rich and distinct sonorities of the Dutch orchestra are a joy from start to end.

Curiously, this DVD gives us the exact same bonus as the earlier release with the “Rubinstein at 90″ film, showing the pianist in conversation with Robert MacNeil at his Parisian home in 1977. Good as it is, there are plenty of other insightful documentaries of Rubinstein around which could have been offered as an extra.

Highly recommended.

When I first played this dvd, I was so disappointed with the muddy sound, I just threw it in a drawer for a couple of weeks. It was hard to imagine that Max Wilcox, who engineered many wonderful CDs had anything to do with it! I have a feeling that the expansive acoustics of the Concertgebouw might be a little too expansive when there is no audience present. But after some further tweaking (such as turning the bass down almost all the way, and boosting highs)the sound is pretty good. And BTW, I’m not new to this – most other 70’s dvds on DG (like Karajan, Bernstein, Pollini)have much better sound.) But this dvd has such wonderful artists, who have few dvds available, it really is a good acquisition (just remember to adjust the sound!)

Minnie phones Mickey from a party and tells him to hurry up and get there. Pluto helps Mickey get into his tux, but the two of them have trouble with a trash can along the way. Mickey’s tux gets torn up, but he finds that Minnie likes him anyway.

I love these classic disney shorts. I’ve collected all of the “Walt Disney Treasures” and all of the “Classic Cartoon Favorites” as well. Yes, many of them are duplicates and can cause some annoyance to some veiwers. However, for a collector who is serious about watching and/or owning all the disney shorts from the 1920’s through the 1960’s, these DVDs are the only ones worth considering investing in.

“Best Pals: Mickey & Minnie” has got to be my favorite of the “Classic Cartoon Favorties” series. This DVD has four cartoons that repeat in the “Walt Disney Treasures” series, yes, but they are among the best that do. There are four brand new cartoons to the DVD series’ and I must say that are by far one of the most enjoyable shorts yet. Two of them alone are straight up figaro; cartoons I’ve never seen before. There’s not many Figaro cartoons out there, but in on this DVD alone, you will get four.

I have to admit I was a little sceptical about buying DVDs and even more so this wave due to the overwhelming duplication in the past. However, the cartoons on these discs are becoming more and more of the popular ones and of the rariest ones, as well. If you have not bought any of the discs from the “Classic Cartoon Favorites” collection, this latest wave of DVDs will be one everyone surely will enjoy. The “Best Pals” edition of this series (Volumes 10 through 12) are well worth the investment this time around.
