Confused by all the Army of Darkness DVD releases (some in print, some out of print, some lingering halfway between)? I know I was. But I’ve done some research and figured it out, and here’s how it breaks down:

Buy,Download, Or Stream Army of Darkness! Click Here

1. The original DVD release– was the original theatrical version of the movie with few extras. Good picture, good sound, S-Mart ending. If you just want to watch the best available version of the movie, you might get this one (if you can still find it; it’s out of print now). It also has the familiar movie poster cover with an overly muscled Bruce and the hokey “Low on gas” slogan.

2. The director’s cut– with the silly Molly Hatchet cover and the original ending. There are many minuses: key lines are changed (not necessarily for the better). Much of the footage looks really horrible, including the entire concluding battle. All the deleted scenes have the feel of an eBay-purchased bootleg. Bottom line: AOD fans will like to see the material, but this is hardly the movie’s best presentation. It’s still circulating but they’re not making any more of them.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Army of Darkness! Click Here

3. The special edition– probably the best DVD release of the movie to date. The 2 disc version (which, like the director’s cut, is nearing the end of its availability) is great. It features both the watchable theatrical version and the borderline-unwatchable director’s cut. It has commentary, unlike every other release, although the commentary is only available when viewing the director’s cut. It has a making-of featurette.

The single disc version (now the primary version of AOD available) is only a slight downgrade; basically, it’s the theatrical release, lookin’ and soundin’ fine, with the original ending as an extra, and the making of featurette also included. (The commentary is sadly missing.)

In summary: You can’t go wrong with the single disc special edition or the even better double disc special edition. Avoid the director’s cut unless you already own the original DVD and just want to see all the new footage in all its grainy glory. The original DVD is a fine purchase if you just wanna watch the movie, already.

2009 edit: to clear up some confusion in comments on this review, I wrote this eight long years ago. “Army” probably has five new DVD editions since then, and I’m sorry to report that I don’t care enough to keep buying and comparing them. My experience so far has been that they keep releasing new versions with little regard for what people really want. In my eyes, a definitive version would be:

1. The main feature would be the theatrical version, fully restored and anamorphic.

2. Deleted scenes and the alternate ending would be cleaned up and well-presented as extras – I know this is possible because I own an Australian DVD of the movie that has them looking a lot cleaner than I’ve seen on all the older American versions. It would be also great if they had a menu option to watch the theatrical cut with some of the deleted scenes added back in – in particular the longer (and more cohesive) windmill battle with the mini-Bruces should never have been trimmed down; I’d love to see that in full as part of the movie. There’s a cut that plays on some TV channel (AMC maybe?) that includes this scene, but unfortunately other parts are changed to their detriment – not a great trade-off. I think most fans of the movie prefer the original version of the movie – the S-mart ending, the original one-liners, etc. – but don’t mind seeing some additional scenes thrown in.

3. Commentary, making-of featurette, etc. all included. The track record of this stuff on previous releases has been very spotty.

4. And finally do it right – put this version (probably a 2 DVD set) in print and get rid of the other ones, and KEEP it in print. Fans are tired of re-buying this movie just to find out that it’s the same damn thing with a line or scene changed… if that. Let’s tie a neat bow on this thing and be done with it. I’m as big a fan as they come and I stopped buying the new DVDs a couple versions ago.

For the sake of clarity, I just want to say that there is no way I could review any version of Army of Darkness without giving it five stars. It is a modern classic which I can watch over and over again. Seeing the Tiny Evil Ashes take on Ash causes me to laugh out loud with every “My fair lady.”

Having said that, I can’t imagine why they are releasing yet another SE DVD set of it. I own the 2-disc Limited Edition which came out a few years ago. I can’t find anything different about this new “Boomstick Edition” that isn’t on the old Limited Edition. Both have the original theatrical release and the director’s cut with 15 additional minutes of footage. Both have the Men Behind The Army featurette. Both have the Raimi, Campbell, Raimi commentary. The only thing I’ve noticed so far is that the Boomstick edition comes with some kind of 10 page collectible book which my LE set didn’t have. But unless they made some drastic changes to either the video or audio to clear up imperfections which I never noticed in the first place, I couldn’t justify buying this new edition. But if you don’t yet own Army of Darkness, don’t be a primitive screwhead. Click on the Buy It Now link and get it.

Nobody played the accused innocent any better than John Payne. Tall and good looking, Payne exuded a quiet moral strength combined with an ability and willingness to mess it up with the bad boys whenever the situation dictated. An Eagle Scout with a merit badge in bar brawling.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Kansas City Confidential! Click Here

KANSAS CITY CONFIDENTIAL is a smart little crime drama that features Payne as the unluckiest of flower delivery drivers in motion picture history. It seems that Mr. Big, bad guy Preston Foster, has been meticulously plotting a bank heist, and an integral part of his plan involves using an exact duplicate of Payne’s truck as the getaway vehicle. Nothing personal, John. The bad guys don’t even know you.

Mr. Big has recruited three thugs (Jack Elam, Lee van Cleef, and Neville Brand) to pull off the heist, taking the precaution of insisting they always wear masks while in each other’s presence. That way, if things go wrong, nobody will know who his accomplices are. For a good part of this movie the only one who has anything going wrong is poor John Payne, who is promptly fingered as one of the bank robbers. In this movie, Payne seemingly can’t walk into a room without getting pounded by some burly cop or surly con.

KANSAS CITY CONFIDENTIAL is briskly paced and offers enough small surprises to keep us on our toes. Phil Karlson was a great director, under-appreciated in his time and relegated almost exclusively to B-movie duties. KANSAS CITY CONFIDENTIAL is one of his best. Strongly recommended.

For years Kansas City Confidential has languished in the Public Domain Hell. Released in a woefully substandard version from Alpha (watch the video wiggle at the bottom of the screen every 10 seconds), and a much better, but still flawed version from Image (the picure is just a bit too dark and has some minor print damage), along with several “dollar” DVD versions that were even more flawed than the Alpha and Image releases, Kansas City Confidential was a movie that most Film Noir fans thought would never see an “official” DVD release by MGM (owner of the master print, and – presumably – the negatives).

Buy,Download, Or Stream Kansas City Confidential! Click Here

But here it is – MGM is actually releasing (or has released, depending on when you read this) the “official” DVD for this fantastic Film Noir. Based on their track record of releasing official versions of movies previously relegated to public domain releases (see He Walked By Night as an example – MGM’s DVD is flawless!), this should see a drastic improvement in both image and sound quality over all of the previous versions released to date.

The movie itself is a tightly written, well acted (John Payne is fantastic, and the supporting cast of Preson Foster, Lee Van Cleef, Neville Brand, Jack Elam, and Coleen Gray are all near perfect in their roles), and extremely well directed by Phil Karlson.

This is a classic crime/wrong man framed and sets out for revenge movie. For fans of Film Noir this is truly a, “Must Have,” DVD.

Update – The DVD is, as expected, a HUGE improvement over the Image release, which istself is much better than the Alpha version. MGM/Fox have done a very nice job on the quality of this release – the print used is excellent. Even if you already have a previous version of Kansas City Confidential you still may want to get this one for the much improved picture and sound.

The folks at PBS deserve the gratitude of photography teachers and students everywhere. Taking on subject matter as impossibly broad as photography in 20th Century America? This documentary covers– sometimes comprehensively, sometimes briefly– virtually every important topic germane to the field of study, from Pictorialism to Straight Photography, from fashion to the scientific. Along the way, we are introduced (or reintroduced) to what has been the medium’s most important uses: journalism and documentary. “A Century of Images” is as instructive for the novice as it may be reaffirming to those already familiar with much of the material. Underlying a wealth of historical examples and anecdotes are the two twin themes that raise this effort above the mundane: concern over the ethical issues photographs present, and the effects of mechanically produced images in the post-industrial age on the psyche of our nation. These themes manifest themselves in ways that are often revelatory and moving. One memorable example: the way Edward Curtis’s images of Native Americans are placed into context by a woman who appreciates them, yet yearns for more images that show her people the way they “really were.” Sections on war photography cover WWI, WWII, Vietnam and the Gulf War with compassion, and work as excellent visual aids to discussions on todays situation in Iraq. Another bonus: the section on the transition to a digital age has not yet outlived its usefulness.

Buy,Download, Or Stream American Photography! Click Here

Until I was able to buy this fabulous history on DVD, my biggest complaint was that while using the VHS version, I had all kinds of problems locating the various scenes I wanted to pull out to show my photography and visual communication courses at the university where I teach. Now that I can happily locate scenes at will using the DVD menu, I can direct my ire at its few but significant omissions and shortcomings. More on Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Diane Arbus please . . . . they were pretty damned influential.

In no other aspect has the photograph been so impressive as in the documentation of events and in the immortilization of history. To prove a point: the documentary’s first video is of a 1999 display of photographs lost in a massive hurricane. Photos were lined up in a hall and residents had to sort through them to find their lost treasures. Nothing is more lost in a disaster as the loss of old photographs. It is the one connection we have with the past.

I had the opportunity to play this video for a high school photography class one day, watching several chapters twice to allow it to sink in. There were few aspects let out.

Buy,Download, Or Stream American Photography! Click Here

This 160-minute video is divided into three parts: Photography from 1900-1934 (with a lot of pre-1900 history of photography; 1935-1959; and 1960-1999. The last part also discusses photographic alterations and the legal aspect of that trickery.

One realizes after watching this documentary how effective still photographs have been in influencing people and governmental policies, both good and bad. Photographs of murder victims as well as criminals, crime scenes, battle scenes, disaster scenes, historical events such as World War I, the Great Depression, Big City crimes with the mafia, World War II, the Civil Rights Era, Vietnam and anti-war protests, the first photographs of the moon, the Gulf War, and even presidential candidates are featured here. What the viewer gets in this documentary is not just remembering some of these haunting photographs, but also the background story to these photographs. Photographers, former news reporters and editors, even some artists are featured in this work.

Some current students may say this documentary is already ten years outmoded, which it is. Digital photography first became marketable in the late 1990s, and 35mm film was sold profitably until 2004. No mention of Thomas Franklin, the Newark photographer who took the photograph of the firefighters hoisting a dusty, torn flag after the New York Trade Center terrorist act of 2001. But, this is one topic educators could use to continue to theory of still photography.

This documentary should be required viewing for all photography students, but social historians will also find this work quite impressive.

Ai Yori Aoshi has to be one of the best anime series i have ever seen in my lifetime. It’s a wonderful shojo type anime with lots of romance and comedy. If you love series such as Love Hina, Mahoromatic, Rumbling Hearts, Peach Girl or just basically any anime with romance and comedy mixed together you’ll definitely would love this series. Its just a beautiful series with wonderful animation and music. Plus, with this set you get all 8 volumes of the series which includes both seasons, the only problem about it is that it doesnt come in a nice box to hold all 8 dvds. But other than that you should definitely check out this series.

Ai Yori Aoshi and Ai Yori Aoshi Enishi are some of the better offerings from Pioneer/Geneon and is worth picking up if you happen to find it available. The series closely follows the manga by Kou Fumizuki, though the story and art are slightly simplified for the video. The manga and anime have been mistaken as shojo (manga or anime for girls) but the original story was published in Young Animal, a Japanese magazine for teenage boys. It would be more accurate to bill this series as a realistic harem series as opposed to the fantastical harem stories like Tenchi Muyo or Love Hina. The story centers around Kaoru Hanabishi, a college student, who is struggling to make ends meet after walking away from his position as heir to the Hanabishi marketing empire. One day he meets a traditional Japanese girl who seems totally out of place and lost in the modern world, and he stops to help her. She turns out to be Aoi Sakabura, a childhood friend, who was betrothed to Kaoru when they were both young children, and Aoi has run away from her sheltered home to find Kaoru. As the series progresses, one girl after another joins Kaoru’s circle of friends, each of the girls developing strong feeling for Kaoru and unaware of Kaoru and Aoi’s love for each other. There is no magical girls in this series, no giant robots blowing things up, it’s all about the relationships of the characters with each other. And because of this realism, the series can be a real heartbreaker because, if you read the manga before watching the anime, you realize that all but one of these girls are going to end up brokenhearted.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Ai Yori Aoshi + Ai Yori Aoshi Enishi – Complete Set! Click Here

This is an excellent series for introducing a girl friend or a wife to anime. Be aware, however, that the series may not appropriate for children. Aoi-chan is nude in the opening sequence, Tina is very fond of grabbing women’s breast, Taeko-chan provides an excess of panty shots and the youngest character in the harem seems to garner the most partially nude scenes. There are a couple episodes towards the end where Aoi and Kaoru spend the night together and it is suggested that they finally fulfill their love for each other, though nothing is shown. Your kids will see worse on prime time television. There is nothing outright dirty or pornographic, though you might want to view the series before airing it for your children to be safe.

Some people might find Aoi-chan’s supposed submissiveness disturbing, but her behavior should be viewed through the lens of Japanese culture. She was raised in fading traditions of ancient Japan and behaves accordingly, and shows unusual strength, for a traditional Japanese girl, in defying the wishes of her father and family and pursuing Kaoru even after their engagement was broken. She is a complex character, giving and selfless, while at the same time being a bit childish and selfish in her singleminded pursuit of Kaoru.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Ai Yori Aoshi + Ai Yori Aoshi Enishi – Complete Set! Click Here

Other characters flirt on edge of becoming cliche harem characters, the klutzy maid, the boorish foreigner, the snobbish rich girl, the aloof and superior older woman, the overly affectionate and innocent Junior High student. Each of them get at least part of their back-story told in an episode, and manage to avoid being stereotyped in the end. If you don’t mind the fan service, and can get past Aoi’s housewifeyness, this is a good story that you might enjoy, especially if you are tired of magical girls, pretty boys and giant transforming robots.

Like most of Pioneer/Geneon’s offerings the extras are rather slim – a couple bonus episodes, creditless openings and closings, and reversible liners with a trifle more risque picture on one side than another. The anime series left me with one unanswered question – the opening sequence of Enishi shows a young woman holding a blue haired infant girl for a brief instance. This woman and baby don’t show up in any of the episodes or in the manga, which makes me wonder what she was doing in the opening of the show. Perhaps Enishi was intended to be a longer series, like the first story arc, but was shortened for various reasons, after the opening sequence was filmed, and the unused characters were not removed.

The Batman – The Complete Fourth Season is available for streaming or downloading.

Season 4 finds THE BATMAN at its most accessible and fan friendly. Lots of folks (and I was one of ‘em) weren’t too enthused with this younger Dark Knight version when he first came out in 2004. So, with The Batman – The Complete First Season (DC Comics Kids Collection) having left me and others in a lukewarm and sulky state, I never thought the series would last to a fourth season, let alone a 5th, which is just around the corner. But, perhaps because of the dearth of animated superhero stuff on TV – what with only the occasional animated film released by Marvel and DC, leaving us with LEGION OF SUPERHEROES (enjoyable) and FANTASTIC FOUR (kinda shady) as the other viewing options – well, I’ve started watching THE BATMAN more and more.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Batman – The Complete Fourth Season! Click Here

There’s been a decided upgrading in quality to the episodes. Also, the additions of Batgirl (debuted in Season 3 and now officially in the Bat family) and of Robin (debuts this season) provide a more consistent element of levity and color to the show, nicely offsetting ol’ Batface’s grim and dour tendencies. In fact, for me, the show’s trump card are these kid crimefighters, whose presence and bicker-and-banter act enliven things tremendously. Great sibling rivalry unfolding here. I find myself having a change of heart regarding this series. I like it now.

As the seasons progress, the show continues to serve up increased depth to the storyline and deeper character development. In addition to Robin, making their debuts to the series are Lucius Fox, the new Clayface, Black Mask, and Harley Quinn. Noteworthy episodes (for me, anyway) are the amusing “Team Penguin,” the horror-tinged “Strange New World,” “Artifacts” (which features a much older Batman ala THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS), “Seconds,” and the big one, “The Joining, Parts One and Two.” “The Breakout” is also a fun and funny episode, focusing on Batgirl and Robin’s personal and working relationship (Batgirl: “Suggest a 2102: procurement of snacks from police lobby.” Robin: “Roger that!”).

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Batman – The Complete Fourth Season! Click Here

Another bid for fan friendliness is the animators’ redesign of the Batman’s look as they restructure his jawline to more closely resemble the Batman from the ’90s animated series. Works for me, although I didn’t really have a problem with how he looked before. THE BATMAN: THE COMPLETE SEASON 4, covering episodes 40 to 52 of the series, boasts vocal guest stints by Brandon Routh, Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill, Robert Englund, Brooke Shields, Dave Foley, and the great Ron Perlman. As for our regular voice cast, Danielle Judovits and Evan Sabara are pitch perfect as Batgirl and Robin. Rino Romano will never be Kevin Conroy. Heck, he’ll never be Adam West. But, of late, I find myself thinking “Well, he doesn’t really stink up the joint.” I guess I’m getting used to him as the Dark Knight. Kevin Michael Richardson makes for a good Joker, and would’ve had a shot at becoming THE definitive voice of the Clown Prince of Crime, if not for Mark Hamill. Mitch Pileggi (THE X-FILES’s Director Skinner) is solid as Commissioner Gordon and I wish he had more lines this season.

Okay, here are the 13 episodes:

Episode 1 – “A Matter of Family” – This one introduces and retells the origin of the young and very spirited Dick Grayson; guest-starring the voices of animation greats Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill.

Episode 2 – “Team Penguin” – This is a very funny episode. To combat Batman, Penguin decides to improve his odds by forming a supervillain group, consisting of Killer Croc, Firefly, Ragdoll, and the hapless Killer Moth. Batgirl and Robin meet for the first time, and they have issues (”So, you got a new partner. It’s because I changed the presets on the Batmobile radio, isn’t it?”).

Episode 3 – “Clayfaces” – Clayface again claims to have reformed and wants another chance. But can his friend Bruce Wayne believe him? Meanwhile, someone with Clayface’s abilities begins committing crimes.

Episode 4 – “The Everywhere Man” – Batman and Robin go up against a costumed art thief who can duplicate himself. The Everywhere Man is voiced by SUPERMAN RETURNS’s Brandon Routh.

Episode 5 – “Strange New World” – Cool episode with a horror element. Hugo Strange releases a toxin on Gotham City which turns the populace into the undead. Batman has 48 hours to administer the antidote before the zombified state becomes permanent.

Episode 6 – “The Breakout” – Somewhere in Gotham City, a bomb has been placed by the crime boss Black Mask. With Batman out of commission, it’s up to Batgirl and Robin, without adult supervision, to somehow save the day.

Episode 7 – “Artifacts” – Another nice episode, this one involves a far flung futuristic episode. In the year 3027, Dr. Freeze had managed to survive and is once more running amok. Meanwhile, archaeologists unearth the old Batcave, which just might offer up an anti-Freeze solution. Appearances by Nightwing and Oracle.

Episode 8 – “Two of a Kind” – Harley Quinn finally debuts in this series, as a psychologist with a wacky talk show. Can Mr. J be far behind?

Episode 9 – “Seconds” – A time travel story. Batman finds himself continually stumped by a common criminal.

Episode 10 – “Riddler’s Revenge” – Batman and the Riddler (Robert Englund) have a conversation on the bottom of the ocean.

Episode 11 – “Rumors” – An armored vigilante named Rumor (Ron Perlman) is kidnapping Gotham’s supervillains.

Episode 12 – “The Joining, Part One” – A police detective new to town hints that he may be privy to Batman’s secrets. Later, the Dark Knight investigates him and bumps into another superhero, who informs Bats that Gotham is about to face its most perilous threat: an alien invasion. The debut of Lucius Fox (Louis Gossett, Jr.).

Episode 13 – “The Joining, Part Two” – Thinking it too dangerous for them, Batman forbids Batgirl and Robin from getting involved as he continues to combat the mechanical aliens. But the Caped Crusader finally realizes that even he can’t do it alone. The finale to this episode suggests very good things for the future of THE BATMAN.

With season 5 projected to guest star Superman and the JLA, I’m glad to see this particular Batman’s universe continue to expand and evolve. Bats went from being initially a loner to a dynamic duo with Batgirl, and here, a trio with the addition of Robin. In episode 13, Batman utters a very promising closing statement which made me pump a fist in the air: “You’ve put together quite a League. Let’s get to work.” Hell, yeah.

But, listen, the Batwave device still sucks.

OK, so unlike several others here, I liked THE BATMAN from the beginning. Even so, I have to say that I think it’s gotten even better over the years. As of this writing, I haven’t seen any of season 5 (I prefer to wait for the DVD’s so I can get ‘em all at once), but season 4 is by far the best season yet.

Hardcore Batfans have traditionally been slow to warm-up to the “sidekick” characters of Robin and Batgirl. And I’ll admit I was initally reluctant to embrace either of them in ANY incarnation of Batman. So imagine my surprise when, after only 3 or 4 episodes, I found that the interplay between Batgirl and the Boy Wonder is among my favorites things about this season. They’re really just kids, after all, and their good-natured sibling rivalry is handled with wit and intelligence.

There’s not really a bad episode in the bunch, but I’ll mention a few favorites: “Strange New World” calls to mind the excellent feature-length Batman vs. Dracula and is among the most exciting episodes of the entire series; “Artifacts” and the “The Joining” (easily the best episode) feed fans’ appetite for glimpses of the future with appearances by Nightwing, Oracle, and the Justice League; and “Two of a Kind” re-imagines Harley Quinn for a new generation of Batman fans. Even the recurring rogues’ gallery gets some standout stories: We get more background on the Riddler in “Riddler’s Revenge,” and Bruce Wayne’s old friend Ethan Bennett (a.k.a. Clayface) gets a chance at redemption in “Clayfaces.”

Not much in the way of extras this time around, just a brief featurette on season 4, and a preview of the upcoming direct-to-video Justice League movie.

If you still haven’t discovered this high-octane reinterpretation of the Batman mythology, season 4 is a great place to start. Highly recommended.

How odd that we’re suddenly getting such an avalanche of old TV shows in complete seasons – “One Step Beyond”, “Bonanza”, and now “Mr. Ed” all due out in coming months. These are old favorites that were always either in the public domain or in incomplete collections or both. Maybe people are tired of having half of every channel’s schedule filled with either paid programming (Internet Millions! Homes for three hundred dollars! etc.) in which you know you’re being lied to or reality TV (Bridezillas – young women dressed in flowing traditional garb and acting like rutting pigs) in which you hope you’re being lied to. You’d hate to think humanity has come to this.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Mister Ed: The Complete First Season! Click Here

To fill the gap many of us have turned to old favorite TV shows on DVD from the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s. Mr. Ed is one of those shows. Following a storyline similar to the “Francis the Talking Mule” series of films, the animal in question (the horse, Mr. Ed) will only speak to one person – his owner Wilbur, an architect who has an office in the barn where Mr. Ed lives. Mr. Ed doesn’t limit himself just to giving advice to Wilbur. Mr. Ed has definite ideas of how he wants to run his own life. He might fancy himself an author or a potential star of the screen, or he might take off on a humane mission to buy his mother when he learns she is a plow horse. As a result, Wilbur is often left in a ridiculous position and not in the good graces of his wife, Carol or his neighbors.

The whole thing is good clean silly fun in the tradition of Green Acres, The Beverly Hillbillies, and Petticoat Junction. Believe it or not there are still many of us who enjoy such entertainment.

Just about anyone that was alive and old enough to watch TV in the 1960’s loved this show. If you have never seen Mister Ed it has humor on two levels both for kids and adults. Kids will love Mister Ed and adults will also. It is very funny and spoofs just about everything. Season 1 has 26 episodes and the previously released Best of Mister Ed Volume 1 only has four shows from Season 1 with the Best of Mister Ed Volume 2 having none indicating 22 of the 26 shows will be new to DVD.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Mister Ed: The Complete First Season! Click Here

The Season 1 shows on the previously released Best of Mister Ed Volume 1 DVD are:

1) The First Meeting,

2) Ed, the Songwriter,

3) Psychoanalyst Show, and

4) Wilbur Sells Ed

Season 1 ran from January to July 1961. The entire six year Mister Ed series was filmed in Black and White. The quality on the Best of Mister Ed DVD’s was very high and is assumed that it will be on the Complete Season 1 DVD also. These shows are timeless, as good and funny today as they were when originally broadcast.

Well, alot of the newer Christmas specials don’t have the same kind of magic that the older classics had. This is a wonderful exception. Its charming and sentimental, and full of magic. With a down home “country” feel, this special shows that christmas is about love and giving. When Annabelle is born on Christmas Eve, Santa comes and gives all the barn animals a special gift, they can talk on Christmas Day! Annabelle decides that if she is really good all year long, maybe Santa will grant her a special wish so she can fly with his reindeer! But when Billy needs her, does that mean she won’t get her chance? There’s a star-studded cast of voice, and the DVD contains lots of great extras (including a deleted song, a funny one which the kids might enjoy!) This movie is a total tear-jerker and great for adults and children too. Definately make this a special you watch!

The story starts off on Christmas Eve where the legend began. Santa Claus gives the animals of the barn voices for twenty four hours. Annabelle arrives this first night as shown on the video. Santa leaves a note for Billy that the calf is his Christmas present.

Billy has been unable to talk since the fire in the barn that left him in the care of his grandfather. His Aunt is the sister to his father, from what I can tell. It is love at first sight for Annabelle and Billy and off they go to play in the snow. Agnes brings Charles, the grandfather imported bon bon’s from Paris for his present. Agnes and Charles go into the barn to see what Billy got from Santa Claus.

The funniest part of the movie is when Agnes steps in “kaka” and the way she says it is hysterical. They proceed back to the house and Billy is left alone in the barn. Well this is the first time Billy has wanted to stay in the barn since the tragic fire. His Aunt Agnes prefers to call him William and the clothes she wears are bright orange and go with her hair.

Annabelle makes the mistake of talking in front of Billy and the animals decide it is okay for only Billy to know about the secret that comes once a year from Santa Claus. Annabelle decides she wants to be a reindeer and be with Santa Claus. She tells Billy her dream.

There is a song by Randy Travis about changing seasons and making friends. Tears come to my eyes everytime I see the scenes with the song that show Billy, Annabelle and Emily, while Randy sings about seasons come and seasons go.

There are many lessons in this fine movie. The two neighbor boys apologize for making up stories. Gus meets Agnes and they seem made for each other. Grandpa gets his music box back, the animals get their yearly treat.

The animation and music are such added bonuses as well as the voices that I do not get to hear on sitcoms anymore. The most important thing to remember is to keep this movie in an active collection and not to be utilized only for the holiday season.

If you’re looking for a Mobile Suit Gundam box set, this is it. Too bad it’s a Chinese bootleg. If you don’t speak Japanese but, for some reason, still want to watch the show in Japanese, look elsewhere, the subtitles are atrocious and the video is muddy. If you want to watch the show in English, you’ll get nicer looking video, but with slightly odd transitions between episodes. Of course, there are no special features, but the case is nice.

All in all, it’s a good value, if you don’t mind bootlegs.

You get all the episodes from the original gundam 0079 series. You get the intro ,and closing just once on each disc. Being the intro themes from the begining episode at the start ,and the last episode has the closing themes on each disk. But all the episodes are intact. The very last disk at the end it has some extras. Like some of the original marketing trailers of the show ,and the intro and the closing without credits. It has the english dub from the cartoon network done by vancouver, canada ocean group. Original Japanese audio as well with the english subtitles but the english substitles aren’t done too well. Chinese subtitles are also included. I give this chinese bootleg four stars.

I got the zeta gundam complete series chinese bootleg the other day. Well all that it is missing is the 2nd half of the 7 th seventh episode after the commercial break. I felt a bit bad cause I missed the dramatic battle scene between Kamille and Lila. It just jumps to the next episode. It’s the only minor issue. The rest of the other episodes are all intact. All having the intro and closings. But the intro and closing don’t have the 80’s j-pop original music. It has the same same new instrumental music from the bandai box set release a couple of years ago due to copyrights. The english dub is done by blue ocean group in calgary canada. There’s the orginal japanese audio with english subtitles and chinese subtitles. No extras though. I give it a four. Would of been a 4 and a half if the whole 7th episode was included. But I can’t ask for too much since they are cheap bootlegs. You can get these cheaper if you look on ebay. That’s if you don’t mind a cheap bootleg.

This is one of several DVD sets that TCM/WHV is producing over the next year or so that brings the classic films to the masses at affordable prices. All of these films are available in more deluxe editions, so this is mainly for those who are not interested in extra features. Every one of these is a five star film for musical lovers.

Singin in the Rain is my favorite movie musical and perhaps the best movie musical ever made. Thrown together quickly after the success of “An American in Paris” I love it for its comedy, its timing, and its wonderful plag iarism of just about every song written for MGM movies between 1929 and 1940. If you are interested in extras this film is available as Singin’ in the Rain (Two-Disc Special Edition). The two disc edition has some wonderful extras about the transition from silent film to sound.

The Band Wagon is one of Fred Astaire’s best MGM musicals. Fred plays an aging song and dance man whose friends are writing a new Broadway show and want Fred to star. They enlist a Broadway headliner to help them get financial backing, but the show the veteran describes is a musical version of Faust, not the fun romp that was originally planned. This one is available in a more deluxe version as The Band Wagon (Two-Disc Special Edition).

The Easter Parade stars Fred Astaire again. After being rejected by his girlfriend/star, on a lark he offers Judy Garland a job as his partner, claiming he could make her as big a star as his ex-girlfriend. The next day he regrets his offer, but he has to go through with it when Judy shows up for rehearsal after having already quit her current job. Again, if you like extra features it is available as Easter Parade (Two-Disc Special Edition).

Meet Me in St. Louis stars Judy Garland and is about – absolutely nothing. However, this musical which has no big events and no real dramatic climax will grow on you. It is about a year in the life of an extended St. Louis family. The father has accepted a job offer in New York City, and nobody in the family is happy about it. This midwestern group does not want to give up their easy-going way of life and all of their friends for the big treeless city. Worse yet, the move is scheduled to take place at Christmas. This is available in the deluxe Meet Me In St. Louis (Two-Disc Special Edition). The best thing about this 2-disc edition is the inclusion of the 1930 Vitaphone short “Bubbles”. Besides being one of the strangest little musical shorts ever, it stars Judy Garland back when she was still one of the Gumm Sisters.

Without even knowing if “TCM Greatest Classic Films Collection: American Musicals (The Band Wagon / Meet Me in St. Louis / Singin’ in the Rain / Easter Parade)” is offering anything in the way of Special Features, I still can wholeheartedly recommend this collection for two reasons; first, these are, arguably, the four finest examples of the Classic MGM musical (acknowledging that “An American in Paris” and “Seven Brides For Seven Brothers” are equally deserving); second, that these are being ’sponsored’ by Turner Classic Movies, the premiere cable film site, and Ted Turner’s Valentine to Classic films, and all of us that love them.

Each film is magnificent; “Meet Me in St. Louis” stands, with “The Wizard of Oz” and “A Star Is Born”, as the ‘definitive’ Judy Garland films, and “Meet Me…” is the most down-to-earth and totally charming, a slice of Americana at it’s most irresistable; “Easter Parade” teams Judy with Fred Astaire, making a comeback from a brief ‘retirement’ to replace injured Gene Kelly in the lead, in a sweet, nostalgic tale flavored with Irving Berlin tunes; Fred is in top form in the autobiographical “The Band Wagon”, as a fading movie star returning to Broadway (in a hilarious send-up of the ‘New Wave’ stage shows of the era), capped by a slam-bang multiple climax finale and the fabulous “That’s Entertainment” capper; and the greatest of all MGM musicals, “Singin’ in the Rain”, the Gene Kelly/Stanley Donen masterpiece of Hollywood at the dawn of sound pictures. As Frank Sinatra once said, “They don’t get better than this!”

So, if you’ve been waiting to build your musical DVD collection, here’s a great starting point!

Baby MacDonald: A Day on the Farm is a multiple award-winning DVD that’s a fun-filled introduction to the sights and sounds of a farm. Featuring live-action images of farms and farm animals interspersed with engaging visuals of puppets, children, toys, and real-world objects, it combines traditional nursery rhymes with the classical music of Schubert, Schumann and Strauss. This DVD has a calming effect on your baby while stimulating their early verbal skills. It’s appropriate for introduction to baby around the age of 9 months but will continue to entertain through their second year.

Most of the videos in the Baby Einstein series are designed as `video board books’ for your baby and offer you the opportunity to interact with your child in the same way you do with books as well as act as a distraction for that deeply needed parental bathroom break. Most of the DVDs have the option to “play” or “repeat play” and are about 20-30 minutes in length — the repetition being very stimulating and comforting to the younger set.

While I don’t think viewing Baby Einstein DVDs will make my infant “smarter” she sure does enjoy them! They give me a great way to interact with her as well as a few minutes here and there to get a few things done around the house. Their ability to calm her when she’s fussy is already legendary in our household.

Here is information on all the current 21 Baby Einstein DVDs including suggested times to introduce them to your little one. This information IS NOT available with the DVD sets but I gleaned it from several sources for my own use. You may like to print this out for future reference.

The good things about this DVD are:

1. The animals
2. The farm scenes, especially the ones that show the various methods of ploughing the fields.
3. The puppet skits don’t repeat the same thing over and over again.
4. The Old MacDonald song
5. The song set to the Farmer in the Dell tune.
6. The pigs sliding into the mud puddle.
7. Has some good extras and not just flash cards and toy lists.

The not-so-good things about this DVD:

1. Too much of the music is slow, when it should be upbeat. Why plough to a lullaby?
2. Younger children like it, but it’s not easy adult viewing. This DVD puts me to sleep.
3. Some of the content is for babies, some for toddlers, but as a whole it doesn’t hold the interest over 24 months.

My son is now too old for the Baby Einstein series, and it’s time to move on. It’s been a great three years, and definitely essential viewing for children.

Thank you Baby Einstein, and goodbye.
