The original DVD release of Crimson Tide occurred at a time before the trends of including cut scenes, commentary, and animated menus. While it makes sense to re-release the film with what we now considered the standard features, missing from the original, I found the overall experience somewhat disappointing.

For die-hard fans of Crimson Tide, this DVD is worth getting just to see the 7 minutes or so (Original release was 116 minutes, this version is supposed to be 123) of exra footage. The title menu is much nicer than before, and the addition of the documentary is a great bonus. But under deleted scenes, we’re shown only three very short “scenes”: an extra line of dialogue onboard the crew bus, a longer version of Radchenko’s speech to the reporter, and a half-minute long nearly silent waiting scene before the panel at the end of the movie. All three are shown as raw footage, without any cleaning, or explanation.

All of the content in the deleted scenes is in the primary feature, in a cleaned-up and nearly seamless state. None of the new footage is more than a few seconds in length, but it’s clear that all of it consists of short pieces of dialogue removed either for time constraints or clarity. What this means is that throughout the movie we’re treated to bursts of extraneous dialogue that the editor had originally removed, usually for a reason. It’s interesting from the point of view of a film student, but as a consumer release I think it degrades from the experience ever so slightly. Crimson Tide is all about suspense, and anything that distracts the focus of the audience is consequently lowering the quality of the movie. None of it is very overt, but there’s enough of it that it might harm the experience of a first-time viewer of the film.

Overall, the extras contained in this release make it a must-have for previous fans, but for new buyers I would still recommend the original DVD cut.

I gave this movie 3 stars because ultimately, I was entertained. The acting (for the most part) was outstanding, and the tension that was created could be cut with a Knife.

That being said, Let me put some peoples mind at ease, and relate some of the inaccuracies of the movie.

1. No Animals on Board. Period. Lose the Dog and the Fish Tank. An aquarium would be a terrible missile hazzard, and a dog crapping and pissing onboard, not a chance.

2. The supply officer (James Gandolfini) would never be allowed near control. Nor would he have the ability to force a seaman or petty officer to do push ups onboard a bus. The Supply Officer is a “restricted” officer, which means they can not participate in “command” of the vessel. The “Chop” would simply be in charge of the ships stores and the galley, nothing else.

3. There is no countermanding a launch command. Period. If the CIC (The Prez) issues a launch, the birds are flown. All the fail-safe measures (authenticating the flash traffic) are pretty much spot on, yet when word comes down to launch, you launch. The Navy asks it’s young submariners to be prepared to do the unthinkable, and are trained as such. As long as there exists the slight possibility that a valid order may be later recinded, you take away the confidence of the crew in it’s orders. The safe guards regarding authorization and two person concurrance is designed to prevent a single officer from launching weapons.

However, once a properly formatted, and authentic order is received, it is expected that it will be carried out. To do otherwise would always give crew members a moment of pause, wondering when the order to stand down would occur. This hesitation can not exist. Thus once the birds are ordered to fly, they will fly, as certain as if the president had pulled the trigger himself.

4. While some submariners have been on the heavy side, the number of obese people seen on the boat is not consistant with a real crew. And I have never seen ANYONE as obese as the COB was in this movie.

5. There are no secret “crawl spaces” in which people can move around in. The boat is not that big. Thus, Hunter and crew would have had to navigate actual passageways to get to control, and would have run into whatever guards were stationed.

6. The “submarine” diving in the exterior shots was not a trident ballistic missile boat, but rather a Los Angeles Class attack boat out of Hawaii. I was in Pearl Harbor when the filming took place, and Pearl is strictly a Fast Attack sub base, with Tridents only coming once in awhile for a stop over after the end of a patrol. The boat shown in the dive footage was actually an LA attack boat, and not a boomer.

7. While boat commanders frequently run multiple casualty drills, there would never be a “weapons drill” run just after a potentially fatal fire. The boat commander is ultimately responsible for the boat, crew, and it’s payload. No commander would brush off such a large conflageration and “run a drill” until the fire had been fully extinguished and the reflash watch reported no possibility of reflash existed.

8. Enlisted Submariners by nature are picked for their maturity and intelligence. Submariners, especially Nuclear Trained, are encouraged to “question” orders. The safety of the boat and the crew depends on each person being able to accurately determine if an order given is “lawful”. The “boys” on board Alabama showed none of those traits. The fact that the “chop” could bully his way into the Captain’s Quarters by simply yelling is a testament to the poor opinion the film makers had of enlisted men.

In a “real” boat, the “chop” would have been staring down the barrel of a .45 caliber handgun, and would have been wrestled to the deck while a “security violation” was reported over the ship and “away the security alert team” was sounded. Security on board a sub is so crucial, that there is a story in which a seaman actually ordered Admiral Rickover to kiss the deck face down because the admiral while wearing full dress whites, refused to show the deck watch his military ID. He was spot promoted to Petty Officer by Rickover himself.

So while my Sailor side has issues with all the inaccuracies and fairly poor treatment the military gets with this movie, I do find the movie suspensful, entertaining, and sometimes too close to comfort (the flooding sequence is a nightmare all sailors share)

So kudos to the film makers for making a slick, taunt, thriller, but thankfully, that would and could NEVER happen.

Looks like the work of an ameture! Only a few poeple remotely related to Google were interviewed. There were bizzare video clips … for instance when the author was saying something like “… there was a long road ahead of Google, they will actually show the picture of a highway”. Extremely disappointing overall.

Phenomenal A&E Biography DVD on Sergey Brin and Larry Page.

No movie protrayal can match a good book, but Jackson’s attempt is the best ever effort in the history of movies. His team’s enormous amount of research, attention to detail and love of the original literary work comes through. Yes, some plot lines are altered in minor ways to keep the off-screen characters part of the movie as it still has to serve an audience that didn’t read the books, but overall anyone must admire their work. Yes, all of us Tolkien fanatics would love to see a movie of 139 hours in length that shows every scene and includes every line of dialog from the books, including Tom Bombadil and the everything else, exactly as written, but that obviously isn’t going to happen.

Sam – please read the books again as many of your review details are wrong. Gollum does have an internal struggle of Smeagol vs. Gollum, it’s right in the book. It is pretty obvious in the movie that Sam is disgusted by Gollum and Frodo is more pitying him, same as the book. There is the conflict between Arwen and Elrond about her relationship with Aragorn and her struggle with remaining elfen and going West vs. staying with Aragorn. But it is subplot not detailed in the books as much, but Jackson is trying to flesh out characters. Aragorn does have doubts and struggles about coming out of hiding to rise to the thrown, he sets this up more in movie #2 for movie #3 but it is there in the books. Saruman does have control over nameless character “A” which nameless “B” breaks with a struggle and in the movie he has to make it obvious (over-do-it) what is going on or movie-goers would go “what the heck?” since they aren’t reading the book. Saruman does rip down all the trees and into forest which P-O’s the Ents, moving them into action, which WAS inspired by Tolkien’s dislike of the industrial age (more to come in movie #3 I’m sure as in the books). There are warg-riding (i.e. big rats) orcs (even back in the Hobbit books) – READ THE BOOKS AGAIN!!!

But some variations are needed for a movie version for the general public; I’ll agree with you that all were not needed _FOR_US_, but there is the Joe Blow ticket buyer he is trying to entertain as well, to actually make money on this colossal project (which was completed, by the way, before movie #1 came out and was still a gamble then; hindsight only shows he could have gotten away with “less”, perhaps).

It’s easy to tear down pick on every detail especially when movies are based on books. But this has to be (with the others in the series) some of the best movies ever made, and clearly the best attempt to mirror books on the screen; especially with the fantasy setting and special effects requirements. “To Kill a Mockingbird” is another great adaption, but it’s not so hard to find a small Southern town and a guy named “Boo” as it is to create Balrogs, Orcs, Rings of Power and the Eye that Never Sleeps. Give him a break.

It’s hard to know where to begin in articulating a coherent summary of so spectacular an epic as Peter Jackson’s rendering of Tolkein’s masterpiece. Perhaps the most incisive comment I can make is that, having been a fan of “The Lord of the Rings” since I first read the trilogy nearly 35 years ago, I’m impressed by Jackson’s fidelity to the spirit of the original literary work.

“The Two Towers” is a very different kind of film than its predecessor. Don’t expect the intimacy of “The Fellowship of the Ring”; the evolution of the story precludes it. The dissolution of the Fellowship scattered the principal characters of the first film into three distinct sub-plots: Merry (Dominic Monaghan) and Pippin (Billy Boyd), whose capture by the Uruk-Hai takes them into Fangorn Forest and their ultimate influence on the fate of Saruman (Christopher Lee); Legolas (Orlando Bloom), Gimli (John Rhys-Davies), and Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), who re-unite with a resurrected Gandalf (Ian McKellan) in the climactic battle of Helm’s Deep; and Frodo (Elijah Wood) & Sam (Sean Astin), who continue their quest to destroy the Ring at Orodruin (ably played by Mount Doom) in Mordor. That’s a lot of threads to weave into the overall tapestry of the story, and it necessarily calls for some fairly abrupt and rapid scene changes. The action is so fast-paced that you will barely have time to catch your breath.

One of the most personally meaningful aspects of the film — and so far, it has been true of both “The Fellowship of the Ring” and “The Two Towers” — is Jackson’s uncompromising adherence to Tolkein’s vision of the timelessness of the story itself. The author was determined NOT to write a story that served as an allegory for any of the current events of his time, but rather hoped to address much broader issues that are rooted in the fundamentals of human nature. In so doing, the trilogy has remained relevant to the human condition in a way that transcends nationalities, ethnicities, and the various idiosyncratic cultural zeitgeists of any of the historical periods it has spanned. I find real personal relevance in Aragorn’s struggle with his own destiny. It’s not a predetermined kind of destiny, as in “fate”, but rather the self-determined destiny of one who follows his heart and his own integrity. Ditto for Eowyn (Miranda Otto), whose struggle to fulfill her desire for valor in the service of good is established in “The Two Towers”, and will culminate in the final installment, “The Return of the King”.

But Jackson’s triumph runs much deeper than his artistry in character development; many great films share that characteristic. It is his mastery in the use of surpassing technological innovation as an aid in the storytelling rather than as an end in itself that raises the bar for all subsequent films. His combination of digital, fabricated, and natural scenery in creating the world of Middle Earth is simply breathtaking. The battle scenes are terrifying without being overwhelming in their reliance on gratuitous violence or gruesome bloodshed. [I will allow my daughters (8 and 12 years of age) to watch the films, and I am probably more protective of their sensibilities than most parents I know.] And Jackson’s creation of the creature Gollum (Andy Serkis) is without equal or precedent in filmmaking history. Gollum is more than simply “believable”; he is real. His role in the story is pivotal, and it was Jackson’s test of fire to create an all-digital character whose range of expression and movement could carry such an important part in the story. It is a masterpiece of moviemaking art.

It will seem incomprehensible to the uninitiated that my only lament about the three-hour film is that it is too short. That’s hardly a criticism, for Jackson has included everything that is relevant to the story line in setting the stage for the trilogy’s climax in the third film. As a matter of practicality, the film can’t exceed three hours for simple economic reasons. A longer film would mean fewer showings — not good for the profitability of movie theatres — or a higher price of admission, which would not be popular with moviegoers. So, the filmmaker has had to accommodate those constraints, and I believe it’s a job well done.

Still, it’s inevitable that one who has read the book will find discrepancies or omissions in the film, but that’s not the basis of my wish that the film were longer. Rather, it’s more a matter of being sorry that it was over at the end. “The Two Towers” is so captivating, so utterly engrossing a film-watching experience, that I found myself wanting more. What better statement could one make about the success of the filmmaker who wants his customers to come back for the third and final part of this epic trilogy? The consolation to those who want more will undoubtedly be in the release of the special edition DVD, which — like its counterpart for “The Fellowship…” — will add significant additional footage to the theatrical version.

Finally, for all the unparalleled technological excellence of the film, the most compelling reason of all to see it is the story itself. If you love great movies crafted by professionals with vision who tell a remarkable story exceedingly well, you simply must see “The Lord of the Rings”. It’s clear that the trilogy has found a special place in moviegoers’ hearts. I saw “The Two Towers” at Edwards Cinema in Brea, California at a matinee showing on December 23, 2002, in a full-house audience of people of all ages. When the initial title “The Lord of the Rings” appeared on the screen, the audience spontaneously burst into applause. I have never seen that happen at any movie I have ever attended, and for good reason – there has never been a movie like this before.

This was one of my favorite films as a boy and its imagination and camp, crazy vision still enchants as an adult! Hans Conreid turns in the most wonderfully demented, camp villain performance since Ernest Thesiger’s prim and fussy Dr. Pretorius in “Bride of Frankenstein”! “Do Me Do Duds” is a scream! The song of the Terwiliker Institute, “Hurray For Us!” is a riot! And, yes, the song, “You Have No Right,” is touching and poignant. The one sure to give little ones nightmares will most likely be what I call “The Elevator Song.” I don’t know who the S&M Dungeon Master/Elevator Operator is, but BOY can he belt out a scary little ditty. One word of warning to those who care about the quality of the print of your films, the video reviewed here is an excellent restored print, apparently taken from the original negative. The Technicolors are vibrant and alive, BUT there’s a clamshell packaged version floating around out there you should avoid at all costs. The print used for this version is washed out and lifeless and even turning the color control up on your TV won’t compensate for a poor quality print. Apparently, when Columbia/Tristar labeled the film for their Family Collection, they figured most families must be color blind and wouldn’t notice. So remember, if it says clamshell packaging, avoid it! The ONLY reason to buy the clamshell version would be if you needed the closed-caption feature, but what a rip off! The deaf are being cheated out of a great visual experience with this truly horrible print.

Hollywood could not do a better movie today if they tried, even with modern special effects technology and buckets of money, witness the live-action “Grinch” if you don’t believe me. I first saw this movie as a child in the late 1970s where it was a staple of Saturday afternoon movies. What can be said? Hans Conried makes this movie as the campy, completely over the top and utterly mad Dr. Terwilliker.
The story and sets are wonderful, reflecting the fertile, and rather twisted, imagination of Theodore Seuss Geisel. Tommy Rettig is perfect, and never annoying as Bartholemew Cubbins, the precocious child star of the movie, Mary Healy plays his mother and Peter Lind Hayes plays the wise plumber, August Zabladowski.
This movie is billed as a musical, it’s not much of one, the songs seem as if they were tacked on to the rest of the production, however the movie is so good that even this cannot detract from it.
The DVD transfer is very good, much better than the earlier VHS transfers, there isn’t much in the way of special features, just a trailer and some photo stills, but given the fact that this movie was made 50 years ago this isn’t surprising. My only complaint about the disk is that the sound seems somewhat muffled in places, although free of the more objectionable forms of distortion. The scene with Peter Lind Hayes and Hans Conreid attempting to put a whammy on each other is sheerly fantastic.

Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties, is the live-action (plus 2 animated cats) sequel to the 2004 movie basic on the 80’s comic strip cat. Like the original this one has Bill Murray (A Life Aquatic, Ghostbusters, etc.) replacing (with distinction) the late Lorenzo Music, who provided the cats voice on the animated TV series and specials. Also back are the cutie but clueless would be couple Garfield’s owner Jon Arbuckle, played perfectly bland by Breckin Meyer and Liz the Vet, played by Jennifer Love Hewitt. In spite of the Dickens subtitle spoof, this one is loosely Mark Twain’s Prince & the Pauper. Jon follows Liz to London, England where he plans to propose to her. The fat cat stows-away uninvited and in the perfunctory identity swap Garfield finds himself mistaken for his UK double Prince (voiced by the great Tim Curry) and lording over posh castle of four-legged subjects in his stead. The evil Lord Dargis, played by Scottish actor/comedian Bill Connolly, is next in line to inherit the estate, have evil designs to get his evil hands on the royal fortune.

This one is worth seeing if only for more Murray as Garfield. Although it is surprising that the sequel was a theatrical release when the original opened for made most of its revenue from DVD sales. The studio is counting on the summer family pickings being slim until Superman Returns, but Garfield: ATOTK is still rated PG for some tame bathroom jokes. The studio also feels that when John Cleese is unavailable Tim Curry (Rocky Horror & the voice of Lemony Snicket’s audio books) is the go-to-weird English guy, for the other pampered cat-currently-called Prince. I have no problem with that Curry is a delicious pansy-cat and Billy Connolly (Lemony Snicket’s movie, Head of the Class) is always fun. I also have no problem with the use of recycling of (classic) plots, knowing where the stories going from the get-go makes any departure or twist that much more fun.

This one, like the original is goofy, but entertaining.

While on vacation, my husband and I decided to take our 5 children to a movie – and the newest Garfield movie was their pick. Each of our children, ages 2 – 8, enjoyed the movie thoroughly! Of course, any movie that includes talking animals is a big hit in our family – and there were plenty of them!

The scenes toward the end of the film when the two kitties are working in cahoots are the best. And you’ve gotta love the happy and romantic ending – just the thing to lift your spirits!

Our whole family gives this film a big “thumbs up”, and we can’t wait for the DVD release!

This is a very comprehensive video biography of Kahlo’s life. Her story is told using vintage still photographs and priceless B/W home movie clips. Also included are on camera interviews with those who knew her best; family members and former students, and those who have written books about her; Hayden Herrera, Martha Zamora and Raquel Tibol. If you’re looking for an in-depth discussion of her art you won’t find it in this documentary…very little is said about her paintings. If you’re unfamiliar with Frida Kahlo, this is a good “Introduction to Frida Kahlo 101″. On a scale of 1-to-10 I would rate this documentary a 6.

This is the worst of all the biographies of Frida and maybe the worst biography of the series. The start out in the middle of the story and go back and for the is no coherence. Mulch of this was lifted from an excellent Mexican production {Frida Kahlo – La Cinta que Envuelve una Bomba (The Ribbon That Ties the Bomb) ~ Jesus Muñoz Delgado (DVD – 1992).} They do not really introduce Hayden Herrera.

There is a different spin on a few facets of Frida’s life which still is worth watching if true or not. However if you are going to miss anything this documentary would be it.

The quintessential flick for anarchists, angry guys, or cult film lovers. Ed Norton and Brad Pitt team up to create an extraordinary film. It is not for the faint of heart, nor is it for the extremely sensitive.

The Narrator, Ed Norton, suffers from insomnia and finds his solution going to various support groups until he meets Marla Singer, Helena Bonham Carter, who upsets the balance that The Narrator has achieved. Enter Tyler Durden, Brad Pitt, who solves The Narrator’s housing, sleeping, pretty much all of his problems. Once realizing what he’s gotten himself into The Narrator has an entertaining journey of discovery which leads to the establishment of a new life.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Fight Club! Click Here

Fight Club is both entertainment and social commentary. When Pitt’s character Durden criticizes so many things taken for granted or thought of as necessities in modern society one has to wonder how far off the mark he really is. The Spartan existence of Durden almost seems attractive when he explains how frivolous materialism has made humanity.

If nothing else you will have an altered view the food industry. And a distinct wonder of what you really can accomplish.

All told this is a great film, with a fascinating if bizarre story. The cast is perfect in brining the dysfunction of the world to the forefront of your mind.

This film is both underrated and overrated. It’s underrated because I don’t think major critics have always given this one a great recommendation, as it deserves such. I’ve discovered that, in most cases, if Brad Pitt is in a film then it is probably a good movie. This one is in many ways. However, I must also say that it is fully overrated in that those who really champion this film give it a lot more credit than it actually deserves, probably because of how “cool” the story goes with them.

There are quite a few fight scenes and they are genuinely authentic fighting scenes. As such, I don’t think someone under 18 years of age should watch this movie.

The actual content of the film, however, could not be more well developed. If you’ve seen 12 Monkeys then I must tell you that some of the idea in this film is very similar to that one, and while I don’t think this movie is as intelligent as that, it is indeed a well designed idea altogether.

One thing is certain. If you have no idea what this film is about I can tell you that figuring out what is actually going on is not very easy. A truly detached movie watcher can probably figure it out and yet still be fully entertained by it. If you get sunk into the movie, though, you will be well into it before you understand what’s happening, and the epiphany delivered is absolutely the tops. A genuine work of art.

Don’t be deceived by the title to this film. It’s a far deeper idea than it would appear on the surface, and it’s far more rewarding than most films could ever be.

It’s a five star film. Enjoy.

This is a sweet little movie starring JEMAINE CLEMENT (of Flight of the Conchords fame) and LOREN HORSLEY (of…being Taika Waititi’s girlfriend fame?). Not sure why Amazon doesn’t have them listed anywhere as the stars…

The film follows Jarrod (Clement) and Lily’s (Horsley) budding romance, from her crush on him as she works at a fast food restaurant he frequents, to their hook-up at a dress-as-your-favorite animal party, to visiting his hometown as he takes revenge on someone who bullied him in school. They are unlikely soul mates, bonded by similar facial moles.

The film includes beautiful shots of the New Zealand coast, a little stop-action animation, and Clement sporting a really choice mullet! Like a lot of stuff that has been coming out of New Zealand lately, it is heavy on the quirk but also has some funny and heartfelt moments. And fans of Clement will enjoy a scene in which he is wearing a Speedo.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Eagle vs. Shark! Click Here

You WILL call all of your enemies “foolish, foolish sucka” after seeing this movie!

Lilly (Loren Horsley) works in a fast food restaurant and garners the respect of no one. But she takes it on the chin and remains curiously sweet. She’s got a crush on Jarrod, a narcissist geek with a horrible mullet played by Jemaine Clement of Flight of the Conchords fame. Jarrod and Lilly hook up at a party one night. (Do you want to have sex? OK.) Jarrod has a mission-to crush a samoan lad who tortured him in school. He returns home to fight his nemesis. I won’t give it away, but the ending to this movie had me laughing hysterically. This is a completely original script absent banal comedy and full of emotional depth. You won’t see films like this coming out of Hollywood these days. Thank you Taika and the NZ Film Commission.

Many people have compared Eagle to Napoleon Dynamite, but I find the comparison lacking. Yes, Lily and Jarrod are geeks, but the similarities with Napoleon end there. This isn’t a geek revenge movie though the plot may seem like that on the face of it. The movie is titled Eagle vs. Shark but it could be titled man vs. woman. Neither Lily or Jarrod run to each other as solace from the outside world. Lily has a warm home life with her brother and Jarrod is pretty solidly convinced of his stature and his ability with women until the end of the movie. It’s interesting to see how Lily turns Jarod around. This film is about the balance of power between Lily and Jarod, not geeks vs the world.

There are a lot of good minor characters in this film including Jarrod’s sister and her husband and Lily’s brother. Jarrod’s daughter is played brilliantly by an eccentric little girl whose name I can’t find on the DVD. She’s cute to watch. I liked Lorena’s performance. She brings strength to her role as Lily but doesn’t come off aggressive. It must have been a difficult role to play right.

Good extras on the film including some nice deleted scenes. The commentary with Taika was a little off putting. He seems a bit over it. His girlfriend, Lorena Horsely who plays Lily calls from NZ and they talk a bit about the film, but neither one of them seem very into it. It seems like the commentary was added a long long time after the film was made and maybe thrown in because of the success of Conchords. The most interesting commentary comes from the guy that plays Jarrod’s brother in law. Taika says things like “that scene comes from the Sundance film workshop” but doesn’t explain what that is or why he was there. Flight of the Conchords fans don’t buy Eagle to hear any interviews or commentary with Jemaine. He is curiously absent from all the extras here as he was with Conchords. Jemaine seems more over it all these days than anyone. I doubt HBO will get a season 3 out of him unless they throw him mad mad money.

There are a lot of great views of NZ in this film. Loved the camera shot on the playground with Lily running in the mouse wheel with the bay out the back. Gorgeous. Good music from the Phoenix Foundation Horsepower, Pegasus that works well with the film. The soundtrack wasn’t chosen for marketing purposes, it actually works with what’s going on in the film.

When I see a good film like this, completed for under a million dollars, you wonder what is going on in Hollywood these days that more films like this aren’t made. Hollywood is good at throwing money into a lot of dumb scripts with hot actors, but it takes someone like Taika to come along and demonstrate how a good movie is really about a good script, not special effects and pretty people.

The Madagascar 2 movie is a great flick, full of fun and witty lines. If you liked the first movie, this is more of the same, if not better and probably worthy of five stars. The second DVD featuring two Nick Penguin shorts for a total of about 25 minutes of video, isn’t worth the additional cost, in my opinion. The first Madagascar release had a Penguin animation short included as an extra on the movie disc, whereas the new one has two shorts and charges the buyer for the priviledge. And frankly, I thought that the two penguin cartoons, while a bit amusing, were a bit of a disappointment. If one is a REAL fan of the Nick Penguins, then you’ll need to get this DVD set. Otherwise, I would recommend just getting the main feature and save yourself the $7.

Dreamworks’ animated films have not been able to hold a candle to caliber of Disney/Pixar films, but let’s face it: who can? That said, Madagascar 2 is learning from Pixar at the very least. Animated films work when they are able to successfully blend humor, heart, and a good story to keep the audience sustained for at least 90 minutes.

Madagascar 2 starts in the right direction by presenting a very nice opening featuring a brief origin of Alex and how he got to New York. It’s probably less than 5 minutes, but already set the tone for the heart of the picture, which focuses chiefly on Alex fitting in with his fellow lions. The other chief characters are also stumbling as they interact with their own in Africa.

Also back is the humor. I sometimes feel like the movies would be funnier if the penguins had more screen time, but they are still funny in whatever scenes they’re in. The granny who beat up Alex in the first film is also back for some humor. The humor is better and more consistent than the first.

The only flaw in the film is that it is fairly predictable. The chracters are a little bit better here than in the first and it has a good heart, but sometimes they don’t spend as long on the emotional aspect as they could. It’s still good entertainment and I like to see Dreamworks progress with their films.

The joy of SECRETARY lies in its characters, all of whom are quirky (to say the least). And if you leave the film thankful that you run with “normal” folks, then you probably just don’t know the person in the adjacent work cube all that well.

As the film begins, Lee Holloway (Maggie Gyllenhaal) has just been released from institutional therapy. Lee has a level of self-esteem that’s abysmal to the point of involving self-mutilation with sharp objects. (She even has her own first aid kit to disinfect and treat the wounds as soon as she makes them!) And whatever therapy she got didn’t stick. But, life goes on, so she takes a typing class, and subsequently lands a job as a SECRETARY for the perfectionist lawyer “Mr. Grey” (James Spader).

Mutual assessment soon reveals potential for an S&M relationship where Grey is the “S” and Lee the “M”. Courting, so to speak, and foreplay involve the boss making increasingly difficult demands of Lee’s job performance with the mutual understanding that the latter will fail and punishment will follow. And what’s a poor girl to do when making deliberate spelling errors in legal correspondence just doesn’t push Grey’s lust button anymore?

Spader’s Grey persona is so deliciously creepy – not sinister, just creepy – that his paralegal does her work in such an unusual hiding place that she’s rarely seen, even by the audience. And the delightful Gyllenhaal’s portrayal of Holloway is so otherwise girl-next-door, except for her preoccupation with cutting edges, that I’m now surreptitiously scrutinizing our office secretaries for barely-hidden scars. And Jeremy Davies is terrific as Lee’s nominal boyfriend, the painfully pathetic Peter.

While SECRETARY was in the theaters, it probably wasn’t a film that you would’ve taken your prim and proper grandmother to see for her day trip away from the assisted care facility. It has some artistically done full-frontal nudity and a couple scenes of X-rated heavy breathing. SECRETARY is a stylish and darkly humorous treatment of a delicate subject that allows the viewer to snicker without the guilty feeling of having been discovered with a dirty magazine. (Of course, if Granny finds it knee-slapping funny, you might want to rethink your assumptions about her younger years.) My only complaint was that the ending is perhaps a little too drawn out and tidy. A snappier, more edgy conclusion would have made the film a perfect gem.

Now, where did I stash those red, felt tip markers? I have to proof an associate’s work.

Both characters in this first-of-it’s-kind movie were well drawn. It’s a first because it shows the S/M, D/s dynamic in a sympathetic, caring, humorous way; and it’s a mainstream film … not a parody or cautionary tale.

E. Edward Grey (an excellent James Spader reminiscent of “Sex, Lies and Videotape”) could have used a little more background but that’s quibbling. Lee’s character was simply marvelous from start to finish. In my small hometown, a few people even applauded at the end. We’ve come a long way.

Love comes in all sizes, and the discovery of that love makes an engrossing 144 minutes of film time. I’ve heard people say these two are “damaged.” Really? But aren’t we all? And how lovely and whimsical to find another who understands us so well.

Lee (Maggie Gyllenhaal) blossoms from a repressed, obsessive, unhappy girl into a self-assured woman all because a strange, obsessive, largely unhappy man sees in her the need to be …. herself … a submissively strong woman who likes to be spanked, restrained, and ordered around. As long as she knows her submission is understood, she is liberated in the true sense of that term. She becomes the powerful one … all because she accepts who she is. Acceptance and love. Isn’t that what most of us aspire to?

I loved the scene where Lee tries to do the impossible: make a cup of coffee for the new boss who casually demands it. A truly submissive person will understand that scene on a very deep level.

I’ll see this again before it leaves my local theater. And can’t wait to buy the DVD when it’s available. It’s a “feel good” movie with an irresistible twist! :)

This movie is not for everyone; but I wish I could say it was. It deals with all the relevant themes of a good, complex love story. It just adds a new level —- and one that’s been around in the shadows for a few decades.
