Lack of special features (Ocean’s 12 disk special feature consists of…drumroll please…the TRAILER alone)

No real justification to buy box set unless you are just really really excited about owning, well, the box

This boxed set the best thing I’ve bought from Amazon.com to date. I love the Ocean movies for their star-studded cast, the amazing humour, and the hundreds of other things that make these movies unique. The extras aren’t all that great, but I usually buy movies for the actual movie, not the extras… So if a lack of stunning special features doesn’t bother you, and you don’t have the movies already, you should definitely get this set. Easily worth 5-stars in my book.

Richard Boone stars as Paladin in this six-disk dvd set of the first season of HAVE GUN, WILL TRAVEL (1957-1958).

CBS broadcast an incredible thirty-nine episodes that first season, each episode lasting 23 to 25 minutes. Most episodes begin with the spiffily dressed Paladin (we’re never given a last name) scouring the thick stacks newspapers brought to him by the ever helpful Hey Boy (Kam Tong), bellboy at Paladin’s residence, the Carlton Hotel in San Francisco. Eventually Paladin reads of a missing child in Colorado, or a rash of robberies occurring in Montana. Paladin slips his business card – a chess knight with the legend Have Gun, Will Travel, Wire Paladin, San Francisco – into an envelope and mails it to the injured party.

Slowly enough as we wend our way through the first year we learn something of Paladin. He has a passion for justice and a taste for the good things. His going rate is $1000, although he will take on a pro bono job if the cause is just. In town he dresses to the nines and in sundry other ways consumes conspicuously. When traveling with a gun he dresses in black. Somewhere along the line he picked up a military education, quotes Shakespeare and Pliny, savors a first-edition of Dryden. His taste in and knowledge of fine wines is commented upon in a couple of episodes….

I don’t know if any of this matters, but going through fifteen hours of HGWT over a week or so it’s kind of fun to have an aha moment or two. Paladin is an enigma, and Boone, a little more credible as the gunslinger than the city dandy, was an inspired choice to play him. Boone has a commanding presence and, believe me when I tell you buckaroos, was pretty darn quick on the draw.

Twenty-three minutes is a pretty tight box to fit a action story in, which might explain why we don’t waste a whole lot of time on Paladin’s backstory. Of course, the storytelling is made a lot easier when you consider the talent involved. The talent rundown has to start with Boone, who was nominated Best Leading Actor as Paladin in 1959 and 1960. The great majority of the first season episodes were directed by action veteran Andrew McLaglen (son of actor Victor McLaglen), although a couple were helmed by Oscar winning director Lewis Milestone. Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry wrote a few scripts for the first season as well. Sam Peckingpah even co-wrote one episode (The Singer).

Buy,Download, Or Stream Have Gun Will Travel – The Complete Second Season! Click Here

The talent in front of the camera was as formidable as that behind. Major established stars like Victor McLaglen and John Carradine appeared in episodes – weak ones, in my opinion, especially the McLaglen episode (directed by son Andrew) in which the old actor played a construction foreman threatening to cut a town off from its source of water. McLaglen simply wasn’t getting around very briskly and it’s a little painful to watch. Another major movie star fares much better. Charles Bronson wasn’t established yet, but he plays a robber who more or less forces Paladin into a gunfighting showdown in an episode that paints fatal violence as both regrettable and, sometimes, unavoidable. Strother Martin (Cool Hand Luke) appears in two episodes, once as an unscrupulous frontier lawyer and earlier in a more affecting role as a high wire walker who’d lost his nerve somewhere along the way. Warren Oates plays one of the bad offspring in a truncated take on King Lear.

That’s just the beginning. Future television stars appear in almost every episode. Pernell Roberts and Dan Blocker (Bonanza) appear as scruffy tough guys in relatively small roles in separate episodes. Jack Lord (Hawaii 5-0) is a cowardly kidnapper. June Lockhart (Lassie, Lost In Space) appears twice as a frontier doctor. Angie Dickinson (Police Woman) plays a young woman whose brother was murdered and threatens to incite a lynch mob. Mike Connors (Mannix) plays a cattle rustling bad guy in one of the early episodes.

Okay, I’m enthusing here. Still haven’t got to the best stuff. What gave me the biggest kick was watching the people I’d never heard of. Peter Whitney, who the intro blurb that precedes each episode tells us made a film career out of playing slow-witted big guys and menacing big guys, plays a mentally challenged ranch hand who’s goaded into placing a burr under boss’s Stuart Whitman’s saddle, with dire consequences, in “The Last Laugh.” The diminutive B-western star Bob Steele plays a crooked mine boss in “The High Graders” – the Wire Paladin blurb tells us Steele had developed a quick draw during his B-career, which McLaglen pays homage to in a draw down between his character and Paladin. My favorite discovery, though, has to be Marian Seldes, a tremendous actress who is featured in two episodes. First as a mail order bride who Paladin escorts to her new home in “The Bride” and later as a small town teacher who the local bullies try to intimidate in “The Teacher.”

Very strongly recommended, especially for fans of traditional westerns.

Richard Boone was one of the most natural actors ever to grace the screen. Good guys, bad guys, he did them all with such a grace and ease that he made it seem so effortless. Paladin was a product of the post-Civil War. A West Point Graduate, he was an educated man, a man who appreciated literature, opera, culture. So it was not surprising he settled in San Franscisco after the war. Though a man of refinement, he made his living by hiring his gun out to those in need. He passed his little cards around – “Have Gun, Will Travel. Wire Paladin, San Fransisco” and waited for clients to find him.

While a cultured man, he was just as comfortable in the deadly knight errant persona, the man in black. Boone excelled at making you believe both sides could exist within one man. While he was a hired gun, he often spent more time talking to people making them listen to reason.

A loved all these Westerns. Have enjoyed the reruns on TVLand, Starz Westerns, and the Hallmark Channel. But so many of the old Westerns don’t hold up well. I was surprised how well Rawhide and Have Gun, Will Travel hold their quality. So these are a super addition to any video maven’s collection. Sadly, I don’t think Boone ever got the true recognition his talent deserved, but those of us who appreciated him can now watch his talent shine.

I’m surprised that this movie has attracted so much scorn. Is it silly and far-fetched? Well, duh, anyone could figure that out who’s seen only half a trailer! So, if we accept that going in, the only remaining question is does it deliver sufficient entertainment value?

Buy,Download, Or Stream National Treasure! Click Here

I vote yes.

The far-fetched plot owes a large debt to “The DaVinci Code”, which itself owes a large debt to a time-honored history of conspiracy theories. Long before “The DaVinci Code” was published, I’d heard all sorts of whispered tales about the Knights Templar and the Freemasons – usually involving the Holy Grail, though.

Buy,Download, Or Stream National Treasure! Click Here

But none of that matters. This is a yarn, pure and simple. As such, it’s well told with a good mix of likable and villainous characters, plus at least one you’re not too sure about. Should you expect a tall tale to stand up under intense scrutiny? Not bloody likely! To keep you from thinking about the incongruities, it has lots of well-paced action.

This is also a family film. I saw it with 8 other family members ranging from preteen school kids to their grandpa (me). Everyone had a good time and everyone figured we got our money’s worth.

National Treasure is proof of what us “common” listeners, movie goers, readers and observers have suspected for a long time; That critics are usually wrong/stupid. This movie got bad reviews. Not even bad – abysmal reviews. And do you wanna know why? After everything is said and done, it’s because there’s no sex, no foul language, and it’s entertaining instead of disturbing. Well we can leave them to the business of deciding what our likes and values “should” be, and we they can pontificate why movies they view with disdain end up as year-end blockbusters. With that being said, I feel I should come from a different angle. This movie is also NOT an anti-Christianity film (and I find it interesting that people would equate it as such, seeing as there are so many other mediums that are). The plain and simple facts: pretty much everyone involved in shaping this country: from establishing it, to breaking from England, from the signing of the Declaration of Independence, to the men we’ve elected as Presidents have been Christians. ALSO, more than half the men that signed the Declaration were Masons. Simple facts. George Washington was a Mason. Ben Franklin was a master mason. Lodges were established pretty much everywhere across the East Coast. There’s no way to dispute these things because they happened. Coming to the conclusion that masonry is anti-Christian just shows a lack of knowledge on the subject (especially since most masons are Christian to begin with). This is a completely different topic (something that I wouldn’t mind discussing with anyone via e-mail), so onto the movie.

It’s well written, interesting, with a cliff-hanger look into history that more than acknowledges Dan Brown. (By the way, Dan Brown’s new book is on the same subject as this movie. I’m not sure which is interdependent.) It’s well produced, well casted, with very few lagging moments. The story is great and the American historical sights are filmed very well, showing masonic influence in virtually everything our Founding Fathers did. I really don’t see how this can be construed as negative. Perhaps critics don’t like Disney.

Seeing an early edition DVD of this movie, I can say that the special features are certainly lacking. Putting any type of “history channel” type documentary of the evolution of templars-to-masons would have been nice. Even masonry in American history would have been good. Basically, there’s a 5 minute mini-history that covers the same ground as the movie or is common knowledge. Perhaps the “special edition” will have more. The lacking special features pales to the greatness of the movie. One of the best!

Overall: 9 out of 10.

This is an unbelievably incredible series which has yet to really receive its due from American anime fans. The original Japanese title is “Tenshi ni Narumon!”, which roughly translates to, “I’m Gonna Be an Angel!” The title is appropriate, but at the same time pretty deceptive. This series is definitely NOT your run-of-the-mill cutesy kid anime. While it does have more than its share of kawaii elements, it also has a very deep and very dark subplot which is foreshadowed in the opening seconds of the first epsiode. This darkness erupts in the middle episodes, and it practically explodes in the final story arc.

Describing the show is a little tricky. It features a high school boy named Yuusuke and a girl named Noelle, who just happens to wear a halo. As the series starts, Yuusuke is on his first day of living by himself, and he’s quite happy about his freedom. On his first day alone, and on the way to school that morning, no less, he “stumbles” across Noelle in the woods (okay, he falls off of a bank and lands on her). She is naked and unconscious, for reasons that are too complicated to explain. Suffice it to say that when Yuusuke lands on her, he accidentally kisses her, and this of course wakes her up. She immediately assumes that Yuusuke is now her husband (so will her family – more on that later). Yuusuke runs away in a blind fear, but his problems have just begun. So has the series, in fact – all of this takes place in just the opening minutes of the first episode!

By the end of the first episode, we learn that Noelle is now a student in Yuusuke’s class, and that her “family” has moved themselves (and their entire house!) to the spot where Yuusuke’s house had been. We also learn that Yuusuke has a crush on another girl (Natsumi), even though she won’t spare him the time of day because of several unfortunate and embarrassing incidents. It is during his attempt to apologize for one such incident that we hear Yuusuke compare Natsumi to an angel: Noelle, upon overhearing this, later pledges to become an angel for Yuusuke. The series centers upon this pledge and how everyone handles the consequences it creates.

The dramatic side of the series is excellently offset by its comedic side. By far, the funniest part of the show involves Noelle’s “family.” They’re from the “Demon World,” and they can only be described as a cross between The Munsters, Bewitched, and a Fisher-Price commercial. The father is especially funny in the original Japanese series: he’s an enormous Frankenstein’s monster who wears glasses and a business suit, and he speaks in an *extremely* polite Japanese dialect. The mother and grandmother are witches, the brother is a vampire, the little sister is a mad scientist in training, and the big sister is invisible. The whole family is extremely naive as to the ways of the “human world,” which invariably results in trouble for all (usually at the expense of the humans involved). As strange as these characters may seem, they’re mild when compared to the “villains” of the show. All of the characters are eventually developed to a degree that you normally won’t see in a series like this, and none of them (especially the “villains”) are what they would at first seem to be.

The first 7 or 8 episodes (out of 26 total) are heavily laden with slapstick, but like I mentioned earlier there is a very deep plot that stirs slowly throughout. There are two major story arcs later on in the series that must be seen to be believed: one happens right in the middle, and another that spans the last 5 episodes. The ending arc is especially impressive, and is in fact the only piece of anime that has ever moved me emotionally. Seriously – it is REALLY that good.

In short, this is a series that you can’t afford to miss, and one that is bound to go down as a classic of the genre. Incredibly good stuff, and a must have for any serious anime fan.

Tenshi ni Narumon (I’m Gonna Be An Angel) is a great series. It has everything from manic hyperness, dancing and singing to a much calmer, darker perspective in the later episodes.
This DVD is amazing. A great dub track, in addition to the origional Japanese. Also, two nice sets of subtitles – one a more literal translation, and one more processed for those not wanting to think half in japanese.
The DVD contains the first five episodes of the 26 episode series. I personnally can’t wait for the next DVD.
The animation is high quality, the plot and voice acting are awesome. If only more anime translation companies put in this much effort. Support this amazing company by buying this DVD.

Is it as good as Planet Earth? No. This documentary series doesn’t a never-ending overabundance of brilliant imagery. But don’t let that dissuade you. If it wasn’t for “Planet Earth” everyone would be raving about this set. Because though its visuals aren’t always as stunning as that excellent series — sometimes the screen shows just a guy or two talking in front of a washed out sky — overall “Earth: The Biography” is just as interesting and at times even more informative. The special effects are good, too.

Generally, I’d say this set is great for anyone with even a passing interest in geology, at least if they’re over, say, 8.

These are the same shows that recently aired on the National Geographic Channel. There are no bonus features.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Earth – The Biography! Click Here

Disc 1 has three shows, “Volcanoes,” “Atmosphere” and “Ice.” Disc 2 adds “Oceans” and “Rare Earth.” Each of the first four explains how that particular system works, as well as what happens when it’s messed with.

The last show examines a theory that says simple life may actually be common on other planets, but complex life — i.e., animal life — requires such a complex sequence of events that we’ll never find another human-like population. It goes on to examine how humans are damaging the planet. Did you know each year people cut down enough forest to cover the state of South Carolina?

Everything is presented with plenty of objective, scientific information.

My favorite show is the first one, since it includes the formation of Earth. Did you know scientists think our planet once had a twin? Or that the moon is drifting away from us?

Though the narrator, Dr. Iain Stewart, speaks in a Scottish brogue, I didn’t have any trouble understanding him. He’s calm and articulate.

By the way, you can’t help but be reminded of “Planet Earth” as you watch this. A commercial for it is actually the first thing that comes up when you pop in Disc 1.

Besides “Planet Earth,” I’d recommend pairing this up with An Inconvenient Truth. Or a trip to go see Wall-E.

I thought I had a decent science education until I saw this spectacular, mind-expanding series. But no. I sat on the couch and watched all five hours of this brilliant presentation and felt I had been robbed in college. The stuff on vulcanology and atmospheric science alone makes this show worth having, but the theories about ‘Rare Earth’ at the end make it even more special. The photography and recreations are amazing [National Geographic should win some sort of award from the high-def people] and the host is charming. Even middle-school kids will drop their jaws at some of the footage and photography in this show. I have bought at least a half-dozen DVDs for people who need a little science in their lives. Mega-bril!

Shirley Temple is Susan, the 17-year-old sister of the rather stuffy Judge (Myrna Loy), who develops an infatuation for artist Cary Grant. Grant is “asked” to date Temple until the infatuation wears off; meanwhile, he and Loy fall in love. There are a couple of terrific scenes, like the one in the restaurant where all the characters converge in grand confusion and misunderstanding. There is also a very appealing breeziness in all the proceedings (helped along mostly by Rudy Valee as Loy’s longtime beau and Roy Collins as a psychiatrist). Worth a watch.

Far from Grant’s worst (THE PRIDE AND THE PASSION) and definitely not his best (THE AWFUL TRUTH) THE BACHELOR & THE BOBBY-SOXER just kinda sits somewhere in the middle, well, maybe just a little higher than the middle. The cast is strong, the script a little forced, but the direction by Irving Reis is flat and uninspired. If Howard Hawks, Preston Sturges or Leo McCarey had directed this same movie it would be a masterpiece.

After a brief encounter, teenager Shirley Temple has fallen deeply in love with the older but dashing Cary Grant. So deep in fact that she sneaks into his apartment while he’s gone. Grant returns a few minutes before the law does and next thing you know Grant is ordered by the court to hang out with Temple until she falls out of love with him! See what I mean by the script being forced.

Anyway, that’s a long and confusing set-up just to see Grant in a difficult situation, but it’s almost worth it cause some really funny stuff happens next. What most people seem to remember is when Grant turns the tables and actually acts like a crazy talking teenager “Hi. Mello greeting, yookie dookie!” But my favorite scene is when Grant takes Judge Myrna Loy to dinner at a fancy club and before long everybody in the cast is sitting at their table arguing. Rudy Vallee even has his chair stolen at one point!

Woman: “Now there’s a guy who never goes out of a girl’s mind. He just stays there…like a heavy meal.”

Man: “Oh yea. Then what am I like?”

Woman: “Orange juice.”

THE BACHELOR & THE BOBBY-SOXER is worth watching (a few times) and has some good screwball scenes, but it just never reaches that lunatic pace that made THE MIRACLE OF MORGAN’S CREEK, BRINGING UP BABY and LOVE CRAZY such timeless classics.

Dick – Cary Grant (THE AWFUL TRUTH, BRINGING UP BABY)

Margaret – Myrna Loy (THE THIN MAN, LOVE CRAZY)

Susan – Shirley Temple (FORT APACHE, SINCE YOU WENT AWAY)

Tommy – Rudy Valee (THE PALM BEACH STORY, UNFAITHFULLY YOURS)

Thaddeus – Harry Davenport (GONE WITH THE WIND, THE OX-BOW INCIDENT)

This is one of the most remarkable films I’ve seen in quite some time. In fact, it has lurched into the pantheon of my all-time favorite movies! It is a somewhat odd mixture of diverse ingredients, with elements of Office Space – Special Edition with Flair (Widescreen Edition) and High Fidelity and even some allusions to Gladiator (Widescreen Edition) thrown in just for fun. On top of that, much of it makes you feel like you’re in the Twilight Zone, yet there’s some downright slap-stick comedy that is stirred in for one amazing concoction of a story!

Buy,Download, Or Stream Cashback! Click Here

The DVD details the life of an artist (Sean Biggerstaff) who is having an awful time getting over his ex-girlfriend who just dumped him. He’s having such a rough time, in fact, that he can’t sleep. I mean, literally – he has the worst case of insomnia the world has ever seen. Finally, he gets a job working 3rd shift at a supermarket, just for something to do.

While there he meets up with a very pretty cashier (Emilia Fox) and some just plain crazy co-workers. He looks at even something as banal as working in a grocery store as being an “artistic” (if not metaphysical?) experience, and finds himself gravitating towards the lovely blonde cashier.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Cashback! Click Here

At the base, what this movie seems to be “all about” to me is a sort of meditation on feminine beauty, and the way that (straight) men perceive that beauty. Yes, this includes the female nude, but in an artistic way as opposed to being sleazy. The film is full of useful flashbacks that help us understand the evolution of an artist’s perception of women. Many of these flashbacks,in fact, I could relate to in my own life.

Be warned that this is a very “different” sort of movie. Being an independent film, it goes well off of the beaten-track, and to me that’s a good thing. While I’m sure there are plenty of people who will watch this and say “Boy, that was weird” I’m also confident that there are many who will say “Wow, I’d like to see more introspective flicks like that!” I belong to the latter group.

In 2006, the short film Cashback was nominated for a best live-action short Oscar. Writer/Director Sean Ellis then went on to spin the short about a night-shift worker in a supermarket into a feature about a night-shift worker in a supermarket. Using the same actors, and even most of the footage from the original short, Ellis adds a painful breakup to our hero’s life, which brings on a case of incurable insomnia. Looking for a way to cash in on his inability to sleep, art student Ben Willis (Sean Biggerstaff) applies for a job at an all-night supermarket.

Anyone remember Saved By the Bell and Zack Morris’s envy-worthy ability to utter the phrase “time-out” and thus freeze time? In Cashback Ben has this same ability, but he uses it in a much more libidinous way: to undress attractive women in the grocery store he works at and then draw their nude figures. Granted, these gratuitous scenes are not the crux of the film, but they’re likely to be the most memorable to most viewers. As the camera slowly pans over (and back over) the striking nude female forms, the audience is to see Ben as an intrepid young artist, not as a peeping Tom. The artistic presentation of the women, and the flashbacks to Ben’s childhood experiences do their best to give this impression, but the extended length of the scenes and their lack of importance to the final outcome of the story, implies a hint of exploitation rather than simple artistic expression. For the most extensive look at the indelible female form since Striptease, Cashback has cornered the market. Cleverly disguised in the form of a romantic comedy, Cashback manages to comes across as an artsy British Garden State meets Showgirls.

With an endearing cast of characters, including Emilia Fox as Ben’s new love interest at the supermarket, Cashback offers an intriguing story exploring the complicated topics of relationships and self-expression through surrealistic methods, including freezing and fast-forwarding time. At different points, the world is swirling around Ben, faster than he can keep up, while at others everything stops and he can examine the world between the moments that we live. Eventually he comes to realize that there are times when fast-forward and freeze frame are on equal footing; no matter what, the past can’t be undone.

Cashback is the first feature from director Sean Ellis, and while it’s clear that he has enormous talent in the fields of both writing and directing, it’s also clear that he has much room to grow as an artist. At times the film begins to meander a bit, and points that seem to have real significance to the story are left by the wayside as new plotlines are picked up. This causes the film to play out almost episodically, like several short films strapped together. This is only fitting, considering that Cashback started as a short. Audiences will not be disappointed by the message of Cashback: “Sometimes love is hiding between the seconds of your life”, but they may find themselves wondering about the presentation of the message.

With the huge success of such grand musicals as LES MISERABLES and THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, it was perhaps obvious that sooner or later Victor Hugo’s classic of love and fate, NOTRE DAME DE PARIS (AKA “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”) would also get the musical treatment. Disney had already done it before as an animated film, but this time, the tragic story would be presented as a big operatic musical production. The end result would be somewhat mixed as NOTRE DAME DE PARIS became a theatrical box-office hit in both France and Canada, while underwhelming British and American audiences. (Part of this could be blamed on an English translation that proved to be both repetitive and banal.)

This DVD of NOTRE DAME DE PARIS presents the production in its original French with the option to access other language sub-titles, including English. There is also a 15 minute documentary covering the making of the musical. NOTRE DAME DE PARIS is indeed a sprawling production on a grand scale. It tells the story of the beautiful gypsy Esmeralda and of the three men who are enthralled by her: the soldier Phoebus, the priest Frollo, and Notre Dame’s hunchbacked bell ringer, Quasimodo. When Esmeralda is accused of a crime which she did not commit, Quasimodo rescues and shelters her in the sanctuary of Notre Dame. However, things fall apart with tragic results.

Garou does a wonderful job of capturing the pain and humanity of Quasimodo. With his plaintive gravelly voice, his is a touching performance. Helen Segara makes for a wonderfully beautiful, if somewhat distracted, Esmeralda. Daniel Lavoie is appropriately tortured as the nasty Frollo, while Patrick Fiori is solid as the shallow Phoebus. Julie Zenatti makes the usually minor role of Pheobus’ fiancée an effectively strong one, while Bruno Pelletier keeps things united as a poet/narrator. The costumes, which basically suggest the story’s medieval timeframe, are only partially successful in that some of the modern touches are far too jarring for the story. The choreography also suffers since some of the numbers become far too sprawling and unfocused. There are wonderful touches throughout, however, including the sobering heart-felt finale which is true to the novel. (Something that most filmed versions of this classic tend to avoid.)

Despite its flaws, NOTRE DAME DE PARIS is definitely a show that respects its source material. As a result, it deserves attention and is definitely worth a recommendation.

When you discover the French musical “Notre Dame de Paris,” you’ll get the feeing that you’ve stumbled upon a rare and wonderful gem that nobody else has been lucky enough to know about, but you. The story is that of Victor Hugo’s “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” and as people here have mentioned before, this musical sticks incredibly close to the storyline of the novel. Unlike Disney or many Broadway shows, “Notre Dame” doesn’t try to gloss up Hugo’s tragedy or cover up its many controversial themes with happy endings or peppy little dance numbers.

The setting is the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, and the time, pre-Renaissance. A poet named Gringoire is the storyteller as he opens and closes the musical with a song about the ancient cathedral and of the many conflicting new changes, inventions, and traditional values that seem to be causing unrest in Paris at the time. A band of wandering gypsies, led by Clopin, enter the gates of Paris in order to start a life in the city. Esmeralda, a young Spanish gypsy girl, catches the eye of Phoebus, a Parisian soldier, and is in turn attracted to him. Phoebus is engaged to a young firl named Fleur De Lys, and his heart becomes torn between the captivating foreigner Esmeralda, and his duty to Fleur De Lys and to the city. Meanwhile, inside the cathedral, both the priest Frollo and the deformed bellringer Quasimodo see Esmeralda, and fall in love with her. Frollo, unable to ever have Esmeralda as his own, becomes consumed by jealousy. Events reach a climax as there is a murder… a framing… and an innocent thrown in jail.

The most wonderful aspect about this musical is that everything is told in song and dance, with hardly a speaking line. The music is very distinct, dominated by mostly acoustic guitar, traditional instruments, and easy Andalusian beats that give you a flavor of the time and place, without sounding outdated. There are few huge, overwhelming, sweeping musical numbers, which makes the music much more character-centered. And also, because music and song dominate the entire 2 + hours instead of only having only five or six standout tracks to listen to repeatedly, none of the music ever “gets old,” and you’ll find that the tunes are just as fresh the thirtieth time around as the first. (Believe me on this one!)

The singing is amazing. My favorite singer is Bruno Pelletier (Gringoire) who has a clear, very powerful baritone. Another star is Garou (Quasimodo) whose surprising, emotional raspy growl is perfect for the role of the tortured Quasimodo. The two main women’s voices are relatively softer than most Broadway musical actresses’, but their softness fits perfectly in their roles as a kind gypsy, and a young innocent girl.

If you have even the slightest interest in musicals, please pick this one up. It might be on the expensive side, but believe me, the music, singing, and emotional storyline will stay inside your DVD player, and inside your memory for a long time to come.

This is an excellent portrait of Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel. It includes archival photographs, a narrative of portions of Wiesel’s writings (read by actor William Hurt) and an interview with Wiesel himself.

We see Wiesel talking w/ one of his classes at Boston University, and hear him speak of the events in his extraordinary life. He talks of the horrors of Auschwitz, and of what happened to him when the war ended. He also comments on the abuse of religion to justify acts of terrorism on 9/11, and speaks out against racial and ethnic hatred, regardless of the source.

Two remarkable stories, which I will quote as best as memory will allow: “When the American soldiers came and liberated the camp, they first cried when they saw what was happening there. Then they started cursing, really cursing at all humanity, and their curses were like prayers.”

“In 1995, I went back to Sighet, the city where my family lived when the war began. I saw the train station, and I went back to the house where we lived. It was late at night when I went through the gate. It had the same squeak I remembered as a child. The night before we knew we were going to be taken away, we each buried something. I buried the gold watch my grandfather had given me for my Bar Mitzvah. I remembered how I had buried it under a certain tree. I dug with my hands and found it there. It was dirty, and I brushed off the dirt. Then, I do not know why, but I put it back, and covered it again. It is still there.”

Elie Wiesel’s life is a miracle. He not only survived the death camps as a child, but lived to become a witness who inspired thousands of other survivors to respond to the crippling effects of memories of the Holocaust by breaking their silence. He has written essays, plays, novels exploring the greatest horrors ever visited on human beings, and of their effects on the individuals involved. And he has been a tireless defender of the rights of humans in every corner of the world to live in dignity and free of brutal oppression. Those who want the remarkable experience of spending an intimate hour in the presence of this Nobel Prize winner should see this film, and should also spend time on the companion website at www.pbs.org.
