This is the film adaptation of what might be the best graphic novel I`ve ever read. There are no words to describe how much I love the original comic book so I attended the North American premiere of Tekkon Kinkreet at the Moma in NY with high expectations.

Not only did the movie not fail to meet them but in fact added exciting and unexpected layers to the story. I am an animator; I`m rarely satisfied with the technical aspects of most animated features but the production on Tekkon is flawless. The animation, character design, backgrounds and camera work are all top notch. The two main characters are rendered in all their complexity and the movie doesn’t shy away from the deep implications that the original story holds within its pages.

The movie is faithful to the comic book and the storyline is basically the same. However, Michael Arias and studio 4C were sometimes inventive, albeit in appropriate and creative ways. The new uniforms of the three warriors that Snake sends to kill Black and White are beautiful and reminiscent of a Moebius illustration- the final confrontation between Black and the two remaining warriors is held in the amusement park instead of the car-shelter site (which makes room for new dynamic shots) – but my favorite shift from the original material has to be the minotaur sequence. A lot of people complained that the movie is not as daring as Mind Game (studio 4C`s previous adventure into full length features) but I disagree – the animation gets very experimental during the minotaur scene showing the thin line between reality and Black’s violence saturated subconscious. I loved the way they communicated the internal struggle by using the graphic language of animation alone.

Overall, Mind Game’s pastiche of animation styles is probably more audacious but Tekkon more than compensates for it’s more rigorous style with incredibly strong characters (MG characters came off as a little wacky at times) and a story that is so good that it hurts. If your eyes are not wet by the time Black and White get separated you are a soul-less fiend and you may want to consider a career in advertising.

I haven’t been so excited about an anime since Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence hit the theaters; it’s a shame that while it was one of the most important movies of the year in Japan, Tekkon Kinkreet got very limited distribution in Europe and in the US – so do yourself a favor and buy this DVD!

If you like Akira (Special Edition) or Ghost in the Shell, and thought they were true masterpieces despite their ambiguous style of storytelling, then you’ll love Tekkon Kinkreet. It’s as true an anime as there ever was: it follows its own style of storytelling, it has interesting, even endearing characters, and the art is just beautiful. It sits comfortably next to some of the best anime ever to come to the States.

Tekkon Kinkreet follows two young boys, known around the city as the Cats, but to each other they are Black and White. Black is a brooding, violent youngster with a gift for taking pain and dishing it out. White is, simply, special; he’s empathic, enjoys life, and has a deep sense of when things aren’t right. He also seems to be magically gifted. That gift, however, has left White an innocent boy, incapable of growing up and acting his age; that’s why Black feels obligated to protect the young boy, and the that means eliminating any possible threat to him and White, as well as the city in which they live. Thus, these two have a few enemies, including the Yakuza, some strange and powerful alien assassins, and a mysterious creature known by the youth in the city as the “Minotaur.” All the while, the two are continually robbing and mugging those within their city so that they can achieve White’s dream of living in a house on a beach….

Yeah, interesting, I know. But what makes the story of Tekkon Kinkreet that much better is the surreality of the whole thing. It doesn’t try to explain much; it doesn’t have to. White and Black can run at tremendous speeds and leap ten feet into the air; aliens exist; and a boy has the power to link himself mentally to his best friend. Why? Because they do…. And all the while, it’s as fantastically believable as a well told fantasy novel.

Outside of that, the art and characters of Tekkon Kinkreet helps to drive the story along. The settings contains so much detail that it’s impossible to find anything. If this was a “Where’s Waldo” drawing, you’d never find him. The character art is also beautiful, reminiscent of the short sequence in Kill Bill, Volume 1.

Now, for the one drawback (which many older anime fans wouldn’t even consider as a drawback): this will be a very difficult anime for a new-comer to get into. The story isn’t difficult to follow, but it can be confusing and the ending leaves a lot unanswered, as is the wont of anime. Still, though, if you have some experience with anime, then you won’t be disappointed. The art is beautiful, the story is engaging, and the characters are endearing. I’d rate it higher if it were possible. Tekkon Kinkreet is definitely one of the best anime ever.

Not only is there an OLD DARK HOUSE, there’s also a dark and stormy night outside said house, a heavy rain that causes mud slides and has turned the roads into quagmires. It’s so bad that travelers Roger Penderel (Melvyn Douglas) and Philip and Margaret Waverton (Raymond Massey and Gloria Stuart) swallow their fears (how would YOU like it if your knock at the door of a scary old house was answered by Boris Karloff?) and seek refuge there. They are followed soon enough by portly and high-spirited Sir William Porterhouse (Charles Laughton) and fiery young Gladys DuCane (Lilian Bond). Nobody in their right mind would consider spending a night in the spooky old place unless forced by the sharpest contingency. Nobody in their right mind, we soon learn, inhabits the house, either. It’s the residence of the Femm family, aged siblings Horace and Rebecca (Ernest Thesiger and Eva Moore) and a brace of unseen, but not unheard, relatives locked in upper story rooms. Boris Karloff plays Morgan, a butler or sib (never explained either way), who’s scarier than all get out.

THE OLD DARK HOUSE is a horror movie, of sorts. It doesn’t indulge in splatter-gore or supernatural head-twisting to shock and thrill. Rather, it relies on high shadows and sardonic dialogue, strange characters and menacing situations. The movie contains no character stranger than Karloff’s Morgan, a hulking mute brute glowering from behind a bolshie beard and a few deep and delicately placed scars painted in by Universal make-up genius Jack Pierce. Morgan develops an overarching attraction to pretty young Margaret Waverton. Director James Whale makes Margaret undergo the only costume change in the film, a move that accomplishes a number of things. Undressing down to her slip, Margaret is at once sexualized and made vulnerable. It gives deaf old Rebecca Femm the opportunity to deliver lines at once darkly comic, sardonic, and deeply disturbing. As Gloria Stuart, who recently played the 100-year-old survivor in TITANTIC, tells us on the easy and informal commentary track, Whale wanted her to appear a `flaming dagger’ when Karloff chased her about the dark mansion, hence the pink Jean Harlow-ish silk gown. Rebecca Femm, fondling the gown’s silk, declares “Fine stuff, but it’ll rot.” Touching the young woman’s skin beneath the gown, she says “Finer stuff still, but it’ll rot, too!” Whale intercuts the scene with images of Margaret and Rebecca and Margaret looking at herself in an old and distorting mirror. It’s a brilliant sequence, transcending and enhancing the horror simultaneously.

THE OLD DARK HOUSE is filled with twisted, dark comedy and grand performances. Whale, of course, had earlier directed Karloff in FRANKENSTEIN, and would work yet again with him in a few years on THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN. Thesiger would join them as the demented Dr. Pretorius. If you’ve seen that movie and enjoyed its singular brand of humor, you’ll enjoy THE OLD DARK HOUSE as well. HOUSE lacks BRIDE’S humanity, there are no noble monsters in this one, but its comedy is more finely honed and definitely of a darker hue. And the ensemble cast is as good as it gets. I loved this movie.

Included on the Image dvd is Gloria Stuart’s informal and personal commentary, a nine-minute stills gallery (button free, it runs on its own) and an eight minute interview with director Curtis Harrington, who was a friend of Whale’s and the man most responsible for preserving, and restoring, THE OLD DARK HOUSE as it lay mouldering in the Universal vaults in the 1960s.

Director James Whale deftly combined dry, sardonic humor with classic horror elements to produce the richly entertaining black comedy “The Old Dark House”. By turns darkly witty and genuinely creepy, the film benefits from a razor-sharp script, moody cinematography, and uniformly fine performances in addition to Whale’s creative directorial flourishes. Simply summarized, the plot involves a group of stranded travelers who take refuge in an isolated Welsh mansion owned by a dangerously eccentric family during a terrific storm; before the night passes, members of the group will encounter terror, romance and even death as the thunder, wind and rain rage outside.

Among a distinguished cast that includes such luminaries as Boris Karloff, Melvyn Douglas, Charles Laughton, and Gloria Stuart, the acting honors are stolen by Ernest Thesiger playing the pinch-faced, hollow-eyed lord of the manor. Thesiger manages the difficult task of being very funny and vaguely menacing at the same time; in his first scene he introduces himself in a sepulchral but prissy tone as, “Femm … Horace Femm”, and the effect is both marvelously silly and discomfortingly shivery. Eva Moore also makes a distinctive impression in the role of Thesiger’s sharp-tongued sister whose begrudging hospitality to her guests does not include “beds … they can’t have beds!” She is particularly ominous as she fingers the fabric of Gloria Stuart’s low cut evening gown, noting “fine stuff, but it’ll rot”, and then proceeds to put her hand on the exposed flesh above Stuart’s chest, adding “finer stuff still, but it’ll rot too!”

The Kino DVD offers a beautiful video transfer of this film which was once considered lost. After the film’s negative was discovered moldering in a vault, and then painstakingly restored, a copy was shown a very few times on pay cable TV channels back in the early 1990’s; unfortunately, that print was so dark that the movie was virtually unwatchable. The Kino version features correctly balanced contrast and a clearer, crisper soundtrack. As far as extras go, there is a wonderful photo gallery; excerpts of an interview with Curtis Harrington, a long-time acquaintance of James Whale who initiated the long search for the film’s missing negative; and a commentary by film historian James Curtis. Best of all is a second audio commentary by actress Gloria Stuart who with great intelligence and charm reveals fascinating tidbits about the film’s production, the other cast members, and the shooting of individual scenes, as well as general stories about Hollywood and her own career.

The 1962 Hammer remake of the same title, directed by William Castle, bears very few similarities with Whale’s production; Castle’s version is almost devoid of horror and emphasizes broad comedy which sometimes veers into the realm of slapstick. Both are entertaining films in their own ways, but I personally prefer Whale’s original and heartily recommend that you add it to your home DVD library.

This is a wonderful, heartwarming film, as well as an indictment of the US Navy at a certain time in history. The story is a cinematic, biographical sketch of Carl Brashear, the first African-American to become a diver for the US Navy. Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Robert De Niro both give Oscar calibre performances in this gripping film.

The movie tells the story of Carl Brashear, whose parents instilled in him a determination that would cause him never to give up his dream of becoming a diver in the US Navy. He stuck to his guns, despite the overt racism that he encountered when he joined the Navy. The racism that he encountered would make it harder for him to achieve his life long dream.

Once he became a diver, Mr. Brashear upped the ante and strove to become a master diver. He struggled to do this against all odds, and just when he was on the cusp of achieving his goal, a tragic accident befell him, derailing him temporarily from the path to his ultimate goal. What he then does to fulfill his dream is radical, yet inpirational.

Cuba Gooding, Jr. gives a perfomance so moving and heroic, that the viewer feels like giving him a twenty one gun salute at the end of the film. Robert De Niro plays a racist master diver who is ultimately converted to the side of the angels, when he realizes that Carl Brashear is truly the best of the best. His performance is stellar.

The only problem with the movie is that most of the supporting roles pale in comparison to the two central ones played by Gooding and De Niro. Charlize Theron’s role, that of De Niro’s wife, is really superfluous to the story. Aunjanue Ellis, who affectingly plays Gooding’s wife, has a more crucial, pivotal role than Ms. Theron, but remains a shadowy figure in the backround. Hal Holbrook’s portrayal of a loony, racist Navy commander is rather one dimensional, more of a caricature than a character. Notwithstanding these small shortcomings, this is a riveting film that should not be missed.

Military training films are becoming so common that they are becoming a genre unto themselves. Among the more prominent we have, “Officer and a Gentleman”, “Top Gun”, “GI Jane”, and now “Men of Honor”. The fact that this one happened to be true doesn’t change the fact that the formula is the same. This film is probably most like “GI Jane” since it focuses on the desegregation angle.

The story is actually quite inspirational and is probably the best human-interest story among those mentioned above. Carl Brashear (Cuba Gooding, Jr.) is unquestionably a man of great courage and principle, and his strength of character shines through brightly in this film. Unfortunately, director George Tillman, Jr. has tunnel vision in presenting the characters and eschews character development of various characters other than Brashear in favor of showing Brashear in a constant state of adversity. Billy Sunday (Robert De Niro) is a central figure, and except for the initial scene, the fistfight and a couple of scenes with his wife, we don’t know much about him. For instance, Brashear sees the scars on Sunday’s palms and we are to assume that he worked a plow, but there is no follow-up on that point. Mr. Pappy (Hal Holbrook) gets only one short scene by which we can judge him. The rest of his screen time shows him pacing around and ranting. If a director is going to make a human-interest story, he needs to humanize the characters.

Cuba Gooding Jr. gives an outstanding performance as Brashear. This is probably the best I’ve seen him. This is a role and a character that is far more complete than any part he has played before, and he rises to the occasion. In “Jerry Maguire”, Rod Tidwell was a fascinating, but one-dimensional character with the depth of a rain puddle. Brashear is much more complex and grounded, and the issues he faces are life crises, making the part far more challenging. This is an excellent recovery from Gooding’s last role in “Chill Factor”, a film so dreadful that it was almost an act of professional suicide to take the part.

After a stint trying his hand as a comedian (”Analyze This”, “The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle”, “Meet The Parents”), Robert DeNiro is back to his dramatic roots with an outstanding performance. DeNiro isn’t a bad comedian, he is just such a great dramatic actor that it seems like he shouldn’t waste his time doing comedy. DeNiro endows Billy Sunday with a rock hard personality belying a tortured soul. It is a pleasure watching him work.

It seems every film I watch lately has Charlize Theron in it. I saw “The Legend of Bagger Vance”, “Men of Honor” and “The Yards” right in a row and I was beginning to wonder if she had a part in every film in 2000 (actually, she only did five). This was a minor role for Theron, but she carried it off well and managed to stay with DeNiro step for step. David Keith, who co-starred with Richard Gere in “Officer and a Gentleman”, has a cameo here

The DVD has some interesting special features, including reflections by the real Carl Brashear and some deleted scenes.

I enjoyed this film despite the hackneyed plot and the one-dimensional presentation. I rated it a 7/10. I’m a sucker for underdog stories and I have a fondness for stories where strength of character is the central theme. This film is particularly strong in both areas and brings us two memorable acting performances that compensate for some of the director’s shortcomings.

Where do I start? F.R.I.E.N.D.S is absolutely the best comedy show ever! I’m very pleased that they are FINALLY releasing the whole of season 1 on dvd :) True, they did release the”Best Of” series but those are just a few of the many hilarious episodes of the show. Now with the release of the “Complete Season” ones, we can really enjoy the funny day-to-day lives of Ross, Rachel, Monica, Chandler, Joey and Phoebe.

Started in September 1994, Friends have come a long way nearly completing its 8th season this may and the show ending with its 9th and final season. Along with the show’s terrific cast, Jennifer Aniston as Rachel Greene, Courteney Cox as Monica Geller, Lisa Kudrow as Phoebe Buffay, Matt LeBlanc as Joey Tribbiani, Matthew Perry as Chandler Bing and David Schwimmer as Ross Geller, we have seen their make ups, break ups, friendship and relationships with tons of laughter. The first season however does not deal with much seriousness until the end of the season, which I won’t tell you ;) . The cast also look completly different then than how they look now, and it’s interesting to see how the show first hit off.

The Complete Season 1 dvd edition of F.R.I.E.N.D.S consists of 24 episodes in a 4 dvd disk set, which are :

01- The One Where Monica Gets A Roommate
02- The One With The Sonogram At The End
03- The One With The Thumb
04- The One With George Stephanopoulos
05- The One With The East German Laundry Detergent
06- The One With The Butt
07- The One With The Blackout
08- The One Where Nana Dies Twice
09- The One Where Underdog Gets Away
10- The One With The Monkey
11- The One With Mrs. Bing
12- The One With The Dozen Lasagnas
13- The One With The Boobies
14- The One With The Candy Hearts
15- The One With The Stoned Guy
16- The One With Two Parts (1)
17- The One With Two Parts (2)

One of the most fascinating areas of the classic animation genre lies within the short films which were produced during the World War II era. This was made plainly obvious with the huge success of Disney’s “On The Frontlines” DVD release of 2004. Extensive as this wonderful set was, the scope was somewhat limited, highlighting only the Disney studios productions of the era. Many other animation venues were utilized for the war efforts as well, and producer Steve Stanchfield of Thunderbean Animation has now produced a new DVD sampling, providing a wider range of war era films for us to explore. Specifically,” Cartoons For Victory” is a single disc compendium of animation offering a more global overview, even including rare materials offering the perspective of the Axis powers. Films produced in Britain, Czechoslovakia, Nazi Germany, Occupied France, and of course the USA , can be found here, and it makes for a most intriguing and interesting mix!

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Golden Age of Cartoons: Cartoons for Victory!! Click Here

The cartoons are grouped in two separate categories, with a third devoted to the Bonus Features. The first grouping includes entertainment/propaganda films that are pretty effective at vilifying the enemy. Of particular note is “Bury The Axis” a first class stop motion piece that is not only comical, but very clever in the musical department as well. It’s very similar in appearance to the George Pal Puppetoons. For an Axis perspective there is the diabolical “Nimbus Libéré” which shows viewers how Mickey, Donald, Goofy, Felix and Popeye, are happily bombing French civilians in order to “Liberate” them. This has to be seen to be believed! Another wonderful film is “The Springman and the SS” a film produced in Czechoslovakia, that is a masterpiece of lampoon. The film is an excellent satire of the perceived extremisms of the Nazi Reich, and centers on the almost clownish antics of a Nazi leader who seems certain every home is a haven for Allied sympathizers. A chimney sweep decides enough is too much and dons sofa springs upon his feet, and a mask made of a sock, with a hole from the heel serving, as his eye portal. Suited up, he bounds to the roof top of the ministry, and catches the SS corps attention by giving out a long yodel and then blows his nose with their flag! He then leads them on a chase that exploits their single mindedness to the point of their own destruction. A very clever film! There are four other equally fascinating films to be explored here as well.

The second and larger grouping consists of educational/training films. Most notable are the “Private Snafu” and “Mr. Hook” cartoons. The infamous “Private Snafu” series was produced by Warner Brothers for the Army-Navy Screen Magazine presentations and were directed by legends such as Robert Clampett and Frank Tashlin. These films have developed an almost cult following, and for good reason. Because of the military’s willingness to allow a little more creativity along adult lines, the subject matter focused more on young enlisted men’s attitudes and interests, and censorship was relaxed accordingly. Two of titles which appear here, “Booby Traps” and “Censored”, are notorious for their “pinup girl” stylings. For instance in “Censored”, Snafu’s gal Sally Lou is portrayed in a sexy topless vignette, albeit demurely covered by an arm, while chatting on the telephone.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Golden Age of Cartoons: Cartoons for Victory!! Click Here

The Mr. Hook cartoon series is extremely rare to find, being produced for the United States Navy. Only four films are known to exist, and all are included here! The uniting theme within these cartoons was to encourage sailors to save their money for after the war, preferably in war bonds. Hook himself was more of an average Joe than Snafu, but soon exhibited all of the guile and resilience expected of an American soldier when challenged by an enemy. The character was actually created by Hank Ketchum, who is more widely known as the creator of the “Dennis the Menace” cartoon strip. The debut cartoon in the series was produced at the Walter Lantz studios, in Technicolor no less!, Titled Take Heed Mr. Tojo (1943) the film was, until this DVD release, obtainable only through “grapevine” trading ventures, and those almost always being of very marginal quality. Here we have the benefit of a gorgeous pristine print source, looking like it was made yesterday!

Another menu selection offers a grouping of films that concentrate on more generic approaches to instructional training for the armed forces. These are surprisingly entertaining, considering how dry the subject material is. In particular “Camouflage” demonstrates the why and how of the subject in an easily understood, but attention keeping manner. Filmed in Technicolor by the First Motion Picture Unit of the US Army Air Corps, it was directed by Disney veteran Frank Thomas, and boasts excellent production values. The instructional aspects of the film are explained by “Jehudi” a chameleon that is well versed in the applications of camouflage. (naturally!) Blending equal measures of humor and seriousness, this is another first rate inclusion in this DVD release.

This may well be the finest collection of films Thunderbean has put together since the “Popeye The Sailor-Original Classics” DVD release. Producer Steve Stanchfield has blended together an excellent variety of rare war-era cartoon films. To be honest the visual quality is a bit lower than usual, but it is more than made up for by the comparative rarity of the films found within. Most of this material has never seen the spotlight of a home video production, so there is a newness here that is rarely experienced in a classic animation genre DVD. And these films are still highly entertaining! I guess the best compliment I can pay this release is to say it belongs right along side my “On The Frontlines” set, and it wouldn’t surprise me at all if I viewed it more often than the Disney set!

“Valentin” is director Alejandro Agresti’s semi-autobiographical tribute to the emotional strength of children. Valentin (Rodrigo Noya) is a 9-year-old boy living with his grandmother (Carmen Maura) in Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1969. His grandmother loves him, but misses her recently deceased husband desperately and complains constantly of her remaining family. Valentin dreams of being an astronaut and longs for his mother, whom he has not been allowed to see since his parents’ divorce. When Valentin’s ill-tempered father (Alejandro Agresti) introduces his son to Leticia (Julieta Cardinali), the latest in a long string of girlfriends, Valentin takes to her immediately, and feels that his life is looking brighter.

If “Valentin” were a little older, this might be called a coming-of-age story. Instead, it is a story of this boy’s ability to adapt, to find hope in the events around him, and to advance his own cause in his own way. Valentin is an opinionated child, sometimes to the point of being bratty, but his forthrightness and sensitivity endear him to adults nonetheless. In his attempts to navigate his family situation, Valentin discovers that things are not as he thought they were. He doesn’t fall into self-pity, as adults are prone to. He accepts the world the way he now sees it, changes his opinion, and sets about adjusting his agenda. His strength is his ability to adapt.

“Valentin” is an evenly paced character drama, narrated by a frank, perceptive 9-year-old. Rodrigo Noya is perfection as Valentin. His thoughts and feelings are written across his face. It’s a completely honest performance. He is nuanced as well as bright and earnest. The cast deserves a lot of credit, because this is the sort of drama where, if any emotion is exaggerated, the story would become horribly sentimental. Carmen Maura and Julieta Cardinali hit just the right note, and writer/director Alejandro Agresti appears as Valentin’s father. Spanish with a choice of English subtitles or English captions for the hearing impaired.

The DVD: There is a 12-minute interview, in English, with writer/director Alejandro Agresti in which he discusses the autobiographical nature of the film, its themes, and casting. The interview is interesting, and I recommend it if you like the film. But the photography is horrible. The color balance is so far off during the interview that the picture is practically orange. It wouldn’t have taken much effort to fix that. There is also a theatrical trailer.

I liked “Valentin.”

It walks through a few weeks of a boy’s life, Valentin, as he navigates his days living with a suspicious, protective grandmother. His dad is caught up in his own life, his mother is apparently found some unnamed trouble, and so Valentin is in the care of his father’s mother.

It has the sweetness and romance of “Cinema Paradiso,” the charm of “The Wonder Years,” the subtle dramatic humor of “Lost in Yonkers,” and the uncanny real-time wisdom of “Simon Birch.”

His father visits whenever he falls in love, and although Valentin loves his father, he knows the relationship is, at best, casual. The father is somewhat abusive, but the point made isn’t that, but how he simply is not around.

When the father meets Leticia, a young woman half his age, he introduces them. Valentin falls for her completely, while Leticia listens carefully. To him, she is mother potential. He trusts her, but she is the wiser of the two, and finds that though Valentin is an almost perfect child, his father is not.

The pianist across the street is something like Roger in “101 Dalmations,” only lonelier. Valentin connects with him, as they both meet emotional needs – the pianist needs a friend, and Valentin needs a father. Through piano lessons, they become friends.

Too often, the films in other languages that are delivered to the USA are replete with messages that either too complex or too adult and controversial for a younger audience. “Valentin,” from Argentina, gets it right, with an all-ages appropriate film and a classic sense of purity, without the sugarcoated politically correct Hollywood morality-wrapped-in-a-movie grotesqueness.

“Valentin” carries itself by the imagination of the viewer, who must, at times, suspend a few matters of reality. Real boys are not that wise or observant, not when they are eight. Valentin is never smarmy or has that youthful but bitter street-smart approach. Rather, he is kind and naive, wanting his world to be better, and for those around him to be happy.

I fully recommend “Valentin.”

Ghostbusters – Volume Two:

July 3rd!

Not Filmation’s best, but I still recommend buying them.

This is a sequel to the 1975 live action Ghostbusters show.

The sons of the live action characters travel in time in every episode (great for time travel addicts like myself), and continue in the ghost busting tradition of their parents.

The two volumes will give you all 65 episodes.

Animation quality is compatible with Filmation’s He-Man & She-ra shows, being made around the same time.

Try the live action version too.

All three are recommended for serious Filmation collectors.

I’m hoping they’ll do Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle next (probably Filmation’s best long running show).

I know some people will groan about this, but I feel this movie has never gotten the credit it deserves. Mostly because there is a tendency to look with prejudice upon it’s leading man, Nick Adams, because of the slow-down in his carreer just before his untimely and mysterious death at age 36. My father was a big naysayer of Nick Adams. His prejudice stemmed from Adams’ participation in Rebel Without A Cause, a film my father saw as encouragement for youth to openly oppose their parents, without showing the parents’ side of the story. However, if you watch Nick Adams at work, and keep an open mind, whether it’s in one of his most famous films, like Rebel Without A Cause or Mister Roberts, or in his now legendary television series, The Rebel, you’ll see a talented actor who was at ease in front of the camera. In spite of his young features (at times described as baby-faced) Adams had a screen presence that was strong and capable. Over time, my attitude of him has turned from thinking of him as a so-so player, to that of an underrated actor of whom life ended before something better came along. After you’ve viewed enough B-grade and lesser horror films, you begin to appreciate when a qualified and talented actor is given the lead in one of these films. And in Die Monster Die, Nick Adams was perhaps at his best during that slow-down period of his life. It’s certainly one of the better B-grade horror films he was forced to work in at the time. And it’s one of the better releases by MGM in its Midnight Movies collection.

If you look at the title alone, you’re likely to pass on this one, thinking Cheese all the way, but don’t let the title stop you. I think this was one of the most original science fiction/horror films to come out of American International pictures. It’s based on an H.P. Lovecraft story called The Colour out of Space. It does, of course, take poetic license in order to make a movie-length script, but it keeps enough of the original story in order to feel and taste like H.P. Lovecraft. Boris Karloff alone is worth the movie. His portrayal of a wheel chair bound quasi-scientist obsessed with using a radioactive meteor discovered on his land to make a better world is wonderful gothic material. The film has gothic painted all over it, from the sprawling English country side, to the thunderstorms, to the ancient torture chambers in the basement of Karloff’s rambling English manor. These gothic feels combined with the science-fiction theme are exactly what make this movie feel like an H.P. Lovecraft story.

The film features a wonderful, if brief performance by Freda Jackson, perhaps remembered best for her cackling performance in The Brides of Dracula, where she hunkered down over a freshly filled grave and coaxed a new vampire victim through the surface of the moist dirt with loving, motherly whispers.

This movie also introduced one of the loveliest British starlets of the time to the big screen, one Suzan Farmer, who can also be seen in Dracula, Prince of Darkness. She plays the somewhat confused and uncertain lover of Nick Adams’ character. Their scenes together seem to be filled with genuine emotion, giving just the right feeling of two lovers caught up in deadly mystery.

And MGM did a wonderful job with this low-cost DVD. This film is presented in Wide Screen, enhanced for Wide Screen Television (which is the same thing as Anamorphic Wide Screen). Whatever print they used for this film was beautiful. The colors are deep and lush, the scenes clear and crisp with very little show of wear over the years. The only extra is the Theatrical Preview, and the scene-selection option. But who cares for anything more! After all, if extras are more important to you than the film, you should save your money and buy film-history books. I for one salute MGM for offering us these affordable gems in a nice quality DVD.

If you’re a Nick Adams fan, then buy the movie for his strong leading man performance. If you like good quality, B-grade science-fiction horror, I don’t think you’ll be at disappointed in this movie. And if you’re a Boris Karloff fan, it’s a must-see. And, if you’re a Vincent Price film nut, as I am, you’ll be excited to hear that MGM has released two other beautifully rendered DVDs at the same low price staring this legend of the horror cinema; The Abominable Doctor Phibes, and the sequel, Doctor Phibes Rises Again (both under the Midnight Movies titles). Plus! Watch for Fall of the House of Usher and The Pit and the Pendulum coming out very soon from MGM.

I have always liked this film, even though checking through reference books one may find critical comments. It is true that a mistake was made in changing H.P Lovecraft’s setting from New England (which of course was the deeply-felt source of all of his horror concepts) to England itself. And the story does not do full justice to his brilliant original, which is a classic of horror-literature. But that aside, the film is extremely atmospheric, and has strong performances by Karloff and all the other actors (including Nick Adams, who despite odd casting does a decent job as a modern American adrift in a strange old-world setting). And on top of that it has one of the eeriest scenes in all horror films, where Nick Adams and the beautiful Susan Farmer sneak into a greenhouse, which is a source of mystery throughout the entire film, and discover a menagerie of mutated monsters, illuminated only by flashlight. This scene is a high-water mark in monster special FX, even though it is very brief. Definitely worth owning in a DVD quality release!

This BBC series is well written and well acted, and the Isle of Man location works perfectly as a substitute for the Channel Islands, but I would caution buyers that the series ends a bit abruptly, still in mid-war, with many plotlines dangling and unresolved. This is not a little frustrating, and causes me to subtract a star from what I would otherwise be inclined to award. The problem is one of conception — this program was originally designed to continue for a second series, so the first batch of episodes ties up one plotline while leaving the rest in stasis as cliffhangers to draw viewers back for more. Bad idea! This is what I was told by my local PBS station: The series was evidently not as well received in the UK as hoped for and a second series was never produced. To make things worse, the screenwriter died. This leaves us with, unfortunately, a fascinating story with a very fine beginning and middle but no true ending. I suspect other viewers will be equally disappointed. Just like the animated Ralph Bakshi version of The Lord of the Rings story, half a movie is almost worse than no movie at all.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Island at War! Click Here

What there is is great, but be prepared to never know what finally happens to most of the chief characters. It’s like sitting down to what looks like a wonderful, lavish meal and then having to leave the table after the first course.

Island At War sits among the top of the many films that have recently appeared on the subject of the Second World War. Its setting, a fictional channel island called St. Gregory, lies much closer to France than to the British mainland, yet it and the other channel islands are totally British in sympathy, language, and political affiliation. In 1940, St. Gregory is portrayed as being captured by a German expeditionary force, as are the other channel islands, and the proudly British citizens there face an occupation by foreign hostiles. While their countrymen wage brave resistance to the German onslaught, those living on the islands must, willingly or not, submit to their foes. Presenting an interesting example of how a German occupation of the United Kingdom might have been carried out had Operation Sea Lion successfully achieved an undertaking that has otherwise proven impossible since 1066, that of defeating the British at war on their home soil, Island At War makes for the sort of motion picture that quickly and deeply draws in an intelligent viewer.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Island at War! Click Here

What makes this 6 ½ hour film so engrossing is not only the realism of its hypothetical answer to the question of how a German occupation of Britain would very probably have gone (stifling but much more respectful than German occupations elsewhere) but it is the depth of the characters presented. Where in other hands this could easily have disintegrated into caricatures of evil, jackbooted Nazis inhumanly repressing a purely good English population, instead we are challenged to see the humanity of both sides. Though often harshly restrictive and almost always haughtily loyal to the cause for which they fight, members of the German occupying force at times act with genuine decency toward the people of St. Gregory. Conversely, some of the locals on the island conduct themselves in ways that are less than honorable. There is also the matter of fraternization. We look on as interaction with an enemy for profit, personal gain, and in some instances out of a true sense of affection becomes increasingly the norm. A local girl reluctantly falls in love with a soft-spoken Luftwaffe navigator. A German officer offers a talented local girl a chance to sing in a soldier’s cabaret, and later defends her against an attack by drunken townsmen. A bitter storekeeper, whose husband’s death in an air raid marked the island’s sole casualty during the invasion, begins a highly profitable black market goods partnership with a well-connected German. The island’s commandant, Baron von Rheingarten, while a proud German officer, is by no means a thuggish Nazi yes-man, and his multi-layered interaction with the Dorr family, St. Gregory’s politically-connected gentry, evolves from initial rivalry to his later showing the deepest act of magnanimity of the entire film. It is all much more of an affront to the convenient black and white wartime morality that is the standard when portraying a story set in this time and place.

Island At War is a truly fine production start to finish that will prove as appealing to a lover of good television as it will to any open-minded individual with an interest in the events of the Second World War.

It’s one of the better ones overall, but Vol. 11, which comes out on July 12, is even better. I highly recommend this DVD to anyone who enjoys a good mix of action and comedy!

Despite what you may have heard,it will be DUBBED and subbed after contacting Pioneer animation/geneon they assured me this would be.

This is the 10th installment of the great series!!

A must have for fans of the series!!
