The dvd of this is a real let-down.The picture quality is really washed out.If you can put up with this,Hope is on good form, the story is above average and Jack Benny’s brief appearance is a hoot.Shame about the transfer, though…

Mr. Hope stars as Freddie Hunter, a reporter who is chaperoning a troop of scouts aboard a ocean liner. The scouts see it as their duty to save Freddie from himself by making sure he doesn’t smoke, drink or enjoy the hug of a woman “other than his Mom”. The fact that the head boy of the troop is the son of Freddie’s boss doesn’t help Freddie when he decides to flirt with the Duchess Alexandria. But women are the least of Freddie’s troubles. There is a killer on board. This killer decides to frame Freddie for his murderous deeds. Fortunately, there is a detective on board, hot on the trail of the true murderer, but wait, Freddie discovers the body of the murdered detective. How will Freddie prove his innocence? This is an entertaining film for the whole family. It also stars Rhonda Fleming, George Reeves, Jim Backus and Roland Young. So grab the popcorn, dim the lights and enjoy this wonderful movie!.

This is the second arc in the VOTOMS saga. Our heroes have escaped Uoodo city and now find themselves on a jungle planet, overall this is a good arc and very reminiscent of Gundam the 08th MS team in terms of setting.

Two years ago Warners released “The Doris Day Collection” which quickly became a best seller. It contained some choice Day films from the 50’s and 60’s and reacquainted a lot of people with the wide-ranging talents that Doris Day possesses. There was a reason she reigned as the top box-office female star in history, a title she holds to this day. Volume 2 contains 6 more reasons why Doris Day still has that unique ability to make audiences feel warm, content, happy, and very satisfied.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Doris Day Collection, Vol. 2! Click Here

Included in this collection is Day’s screen debut, 1948’s “Romance on the High Seas”. It’s a gorgeous technicolor treat – a throwback to an era when movies were designed to entertain and it succeeds gloriously. Miss Day introduces the classic song, “It’s Magic” and while not first-billed, steals the show from Jack Carson (the first of three successive teamings), Janis Paige, S.Z. Sakall and a great cast. It’s a case of mistaken identity, but what is most memorable is the ease with which Miss Day seems to acquit herself on film. She’s a natural – funny, real, and gorgeous. There’s a bit of the late Betty Hutton in her performance but ultimately she proves herself to be one of a kind.

The rest of the titles each have their high points. “My Dream is Yours” has lots of grit in this variation of “A Star is Born” with Day’s star rising and for good reason. My favorite song is her heartfelt rendition of “I’ll String Along With You” – flawless. Other highlights include a sequence in which she and Carson team with Bugs Bunny.

“I’ll See You in My Dreams” is the wonderful bio of lyricist Gus Kahn and contains a trunkload of classic tunes sung perfectly by Day, co-star Danny Thomas and Patrice Wymore in a knockout performance. It has much more grit than the typical biography and Miss Day is exceptionally good as Kahn’s wife Grace. Michael Curtiz has directed the film in black and white which seems to make it more serious than many films of this mileau.

“On Moonlight Bay” (1951) and it’s sequel 1953’s “By the Light of the Silvery Moon” are like a couple of Currier and Ives pictures brought to life. Warm-hearted and filled with a score of great tunes, they lovingly capture an era that might have been or at least was in memory. Miss Day, co-star Gordon MacRae and “family” – Leon Ames, Rosemary DeCamp, Billy Gray and Mary Wickes, seem like a family. Loosely based on Tarkington’s “Penrod” tales, it had critics carping that it wasn’t “Meet Me In St. Louis” and it isn’t. On its own terms it is just as delightful filled with charm and genuine warmth, never forced and never trite.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Doris Day Collection, Vol. 2! Click Here

The weakest link in the collection is probably “Lucky Me”, the first technicolor musical and subject to critical pans at the time of its release.

Miss Day and a fine supporting cast including Bob Cummings, Nancy Walker, Phil Silvers, Eddie Foy Jr and Martha Hyer, give it their all. The songs may not be memorable but they are energetically rendered and there are enough chuckles sprinkled throughout to keep the film going.

One will come away from this 12 hour marathon of Doris Day films feeling extremely good, exhilirated in fact, and possibly wishing that Hollywood still made the kind of feel-good movie that Doris specialized in during her 7 years at Warners. Feeling that way in this day and age is something not to be scoffed at. If someone could bottle that indefinable quality that Doris Day possesses and share it with the world, we’d all benefit.

THE DORIS DAY COLLECTION: VOLUME 2, from Warner Home Video, has six of Miss Day’s earliest and most enjoyable musical romances. Five were filmed in a square TV ratio, while the sixth is in CinemaScope. And five are in brand-new Technicolor, while a sixth is in B&W.

ROMANCE ON THE HIGH SEAS (1948)–Doris’ feature film debut is in eye-blinding Technicolor and set on a Caribbean cruise with mistaken identity. Georgia Garrett (Doris) poses as Mrs. Elvira Kent on the ship, while the real Elvira (Janis Paige) stays home to spy on her maybe philandering husband. Georgia is wooed by Jack Carson, while Mr. Kent (Don DeFore) hires someone to spy on the real Elvira, who is presumably on the same ship but isn’t. Oscar Levant is wonderful. Michael Curtiz directed a witty script by the Epstein Brothers and I.A.L. Diamond. Cameos include Franklin Pangborn and Grady Sutton. Jule Styne and Sammy Cahn songs include the classic “It’s Magic”. It must have been a hit even in 1948 because it is sung three times. This is an absolutely wonderful movie. Bonuses include a theatrical trailer, a musical short, and a Tweety & Sylvester short.

MY DREAM IS YOURS (1949)–Michael Curtiz directs again and Jack Carson (Doug Blake) again is the romantic male lead for Doris as singer Martha Gibson. When arrogant singing star Lee Bowman acts like a prima donna one too many times, Doug fires him and becomes agent to Martha, who becomes a popular and likeable radio singer. Wonderful supporting cast of pros includes S. Z. Sakall, Eve Arden, and Adolphe Menjou, with cameos by Franklin Pangborn, Edgar Kennedy, and Bugs Bunny! Harry Warren and Sammy Cahn songs include “My Dream is Yours” and “Someone Like You.” This is another brilliant Technicolor production. Bonuses include an Oscar-nominated drama short, a Joe McDoakes comedy short, a classic cartoon, and a theatrical trailer.

I’LL SEE YOU IN MY DREAMS (1952) caught me off-guard because it is one of Doris Day’s few B&W movies. Still, it is photographed by Ted McCord, whose credits range from TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE (1948) to THE SOUND OF MUSIC (1965). We have Danny Thomas as song writer Gus Kahn, who apparently wrote the lyrics to literally hundreds of popular songs in the first few decades of the 20th Century, several dozen with girl friend turned wife Grace (Doris). Among the Kahn favorites are the title song, “I Wish I Had a Girl,” “Love Me or Leave Me” (which Doris would again sing in the 1955 biographical musical drama), “Makin’ Whoopee,” “Pretty Baby,” and “It Had to Be You.” It’s an engrossing and tuneful biography, again directed by Michael Curtiz. The two stars are well matched. DVD bonuses include an unusually insightful drama short called “The Screen Director”, a hilarious Foghorn Leghorn cartoon, and the theatrical trailer.

ON MOONLIGHT BAY (1951) and its sequel, BY THE LIGHT OF THE SILVERY MOON (1952), are Technicolor gems about small town Indiana life on either side of World War One. They are inspired by the “Penrod” stories of Booth Tarkington. Doris Day and a very young Gordon MacRae star as a romantic couple; he spends two movies trying to decide if he wants to get married, which is wild because (1) Doris is a real sweetheart of a person even as a “grease monkey” and tomboy, and (2) he proposes and kisses her passionately in the street at the end of BAY. Leon Ames plays her father, virtually the same role he played in MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS (1944); Rosemary DeCamp from YANKEE DOODLE DANDY (1942) is Mom; Billy Gray is Day’s pesty kid brother; and Mary Wickes is the cook who never met a tray of food she liked. The color is drop dead gorgeous; the directors are, respectively, Roy Del Ruth and David Butler, very competent craftsman filmmakers. Songs in BAY include “Cuddle Up a Little Closer,” “It’s a Long Way to Tipperary” and “Pack Up Your Troubles.” and the title song as the film’s finale. Full-fledged musical numbers in SILVERY MOON include “Ain’t We Got Fun,” “King Chanticleer”, and the title song with ice skates on Miller’s Pond. Bonuses with BAY are a vintage sing-a-long short, a Technicolor cartoon, and the theatrical trailer. SILVERY MOON bonuses include two wonderful Joe McDoakes comedy shorts, an Oscar-nominated cartoon, and the theatrical trailer.

One of Doris Day’s first films in CinemaScope, LUCKY ME (1955) has her as a superstitious woman named Candy Williams. The unluckiest day of Candy’s life turns out to be the luckiest through twists of fate. Also starring with Miss Day are Robert Cummings, Phil Silvers, Eddie Foy Jr. and Nancy Walker. Bright musical numbers include “High Hopes,” “I Speak to the Stars,” “I Wanna Sing Like an Angel,” and half a dozen more. It’s a very cheerful and colorful Technicolor and wide-screen concoction with a remastered soundtrack. Bonuses include the nostalgic short “When the Talkies Were Young”, an Oscar-nominated cartoon, and the theatrical trailer.

There is also a Volume One, of course. It includes such wonderful Doris Day musical classics as THE PAJAMA GAME, CALAMITY JANE, LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME, BILLY ROSE’S JUMBO, PLEASE DON”T EAT THE DAISIES, and three more slightly lesser Day movies. If you like the Doris Day movies in Volume Two, do check out Volume One.

Television is an medium which cannibilizes its own successes, where one hit show inspires more variations on the same formula every pilot season. Those shows that invariably succeed do so because they take a formula and make it unique to their show. This is the case with NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service. It first appeared to be a combination of CSI and JAG, not shocking considering JAG producer Bellisario’s involvement as creator and executive producer and CSI’s overwhelming success. What it showed throughout its first season is that NCIS stands out in its own right through clever writing and great acting, making for solid, entertaining TV drawing a devoted fan base.

NCIS is the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, responsible for crimes by and against members of the United States Navy and US Marine Corps. The team of NCIS agents introduced in Season 1 is led by former Marine Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon), a tough no-nonsense leader and interrogator. The team also includes ex-homicide detective Special Agent Anthony DiNozzi (Michael Weatherly), former Secret Service Special Agent Kate Todd (Sasha Alexander), goth forensics expert Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette), computer specialist and rookie Agent Tim McGee (Sean Murray),(McGee appears in a cameo role 6 episodes in and quickly becomes a reoccuring character. By season 2 he is a full timer) and quirky coroner Doctor Donald “Ducky” Mallard (David McCallum). Each actor does an exceptional job developing their character, especially Perrette who makes Abby one of the best and most intriguing characters on TV.

In Season 1, the team investigates a broad range of crimes from the apparent parachute death of a Marine, sniper attacks against a Marine recruiter, the disappearance of a service member, and the infiltration of a Navy base by a suspected terrorist. The twists and turns are frequent and the tension is kept high. The dialogue between the team members while on the case is especially fun, the writers really making an effort to hint at deeper personalities while keeping a balance between funny and dramatic. There are some minor stumbling blocks, occasional episodes that are less than perfect, but overall , Season 1 was a runaway hit. Expect NCIS to remain a top show for CBS for many more years.

The Season 1 box set contains 23 episodes, for a total running time of almost 17 hours. It begins with Yankee White, the first offical NCIS episode. It does not contain the 2-Part JAG episodes (the murder of LT Loren Singer) that introduced the NCIS team and concept. The set is in Dolby Stereo and 16×9 widescreen, and contains three featurettes: Creating Season 1, Building the Team, Defining the Look. The featurettes run about 20 minutes each, and have some great interviews with the cast and creater Bellisario. There is also an audio commentary by Bellisario for episode “Yankee White”. This box set is a must buy for NCIS or JAG fans and for fans of solid, entertaining television shows that don’t insult your intelligence. Order your box set today and start working the case!

*SPOILER*

Killing a main character in the second season cliffhanger is a pretty shocking way to set up a third season. Ending with a bang, literally, NCIS returns with a excellent third season with the right combination of wit, drama, and cast. This is good television. And you dont let good television sit on the shelf too long, so hot on the heels of the release of the Second Season on DVD is the April release of the complete Season Three of NCIS.

The team also includes ex-homicide detective Special Agent Anthony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly), Mossad agent Ziva David (Cote de Pablo), goth forensics expert Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette), computer specialist and rookie Agent Tim McGee (Sean Murray), and quirky coroner Doctor Donald “Ducky” Mallard (David McCallum). Season Three witnesses the aftermath of Kate Todd’s murder by Ari, the introduction of Mossad agent Ziva David, and increased screen time for McGee and Abby. Harmon again does a knockout job as the lead, with his best work coming in the season premiere, as he grieves over the loss of Kate. Micheal Weatherley and Sean Murray continue to develop their competitive older-younger brother relationship, Perrette lights up the screen as Abby, and David McCallum delivers a refined and dignified performance.

Season three began with the two part episode Kill Ari 1 and 2, which examined the aftermath of Kate’s death and the hunt for Ari. The introduction of Ziva and Director Jenny Shephard (Lauren Holly) seemed out of place and awkward considering the emotional tone, and it took five or six episodes for Ziva to be less of a cardboard character and more a part of the team. Her first really impressive episode came with Tony in the solid “Under Covers”. Some of the better episodes include “Probie”, when McGee shoots a man who turns out to be an undercover cop, “Mind Games”, where Gibbs goes head-to-head with a serial killer, “Bait” which showcases a great performance by Weatherley. The season-ending Hiatus Parts 1 and 2 are decent episodes up to the last five minutes, which are incredibly rushed in order to get to the cliffhanger of Gibbs quitting NCIS.

The Season Three DVD box set contains all 24 episodes in widescreen for a total running time of almost 17 hours. Because of its quick turn-around time on the release, the extras are not as good as Season One, with only a few commentaries and featurettes anticipated. That is the unfortunate trade-off, but given that we get another full season of NCIS on DVD so quickly, its not a bad deal. Fans of the show will quickly snap this up, for those who have never watched before, if you liked JAG, CSI, or Bones, you will like this show. NCIS Season Three demonstrates exactly why this show is such a big hit. The DVD is on shelves in April. Highly Recommended.

I’ve noticed all of the reviews mainly focus on the season itself and not the essentials of the whether the blu-ray transfer of this season was good or not. So I’ve decided to add my two cents in. And remember everyone we are all entitled to our opinions so feel free to disagree. O.K. First of all I think season 7 was pretty good. I would give it 4 stars overall. It was better than the mess of season 6 and came close to the greatness of season 5. Of course nothing has come close yet to season 2 in my opinion. That was the standard that will be used to measure all action series for years to come. Anyway, yes there were some uneven moments and plot holes this season at times but when you look at the big picture after watching the entire show the writers explained it well enough to satisfy my curiosity. The acting was great as usual with plenty of new characters getting a chance to flex their muscles and of course Jack barking his way through the day as usual. I liked the dialogue between him and agent Renee Walker and how Jack finds some of his humanity in the process by the time the show draws to an end but Renee ends up somewhat losing her’s. Those who have seen the finale know what I mean. And I can’t say enough about Jon Voight. His acting was superb. I felt the show really hit a new gear when he took center stage as the main enemy. And yes there are a few moments where the story will make you scratch your head but in the end the writers do a good job of tying everything up and entertaining you in the process. For example, who cares why Jack is fighting someone when you get to see him kill a guy with a screwdriver through the chest and then use that same screwdriver to start-up a truck. A true classic Jack Bauer moment :) You’ll even get to see Kim become a mini jack near the end. Overall a satisfying season that did more things right than it did wrong.

Buy,Download, Or Stream 24: Season Seven! Click Here

Now on to the transfer. This is where my 3 star review comes into play. The blu-ray version is only slightly above the standard edition in picture quality in my opinion. On several occasions I noticed grain and bland or washed out colors. The blacks and grays were decent but didn’t have that pop that I know blu-ray can produce. However, on a few scenes the picture quality was noticeable better than at other times. It seemed almost that fox didn’t have their high def cameras working right on some of the episodes. Overall I would give the picture quality between a 7 and 8. The audio also is not quite what I was hoping. The dts master audio mix is a definite step up from dolby digital but for a show like 24 I was surprised that my system didn’t get a better workout than it did. The audio mix is extremely front channel heavy with very little going on with your surrounds. This is a real missed opportunity on the part of fox since something is always going on behind the scenes with each set on 24. I wanted to hear the conversations and computer analysts typing away in the background with fbi headquarters or the grinding of hydraulics in the background as Jack and company stake out the loading docks. I just didn’t hear any of that. And I feel that my ht is a pretty good set up (cost me about $3000) so I know that the mix could have been so much better. As a contrast I just finished watching Taken on blu and that was a audio mix done right. Anyway if I had known the mix would end up being so front channel heavy and the picture quality not popping as much as I had hoped I would have just went with standard def. Of course to each his or her own.

Like most fans, I was disappointed in Season 6, but willing to give 24 another try based on its past greatness. Season 7 surpassed my expectations.

While 24 is an action show, its best moments for me are the pivotal ones in the lives of the characters we care about so much, especially Jack. (Like, in Season 2 Jack talking with Kim while flying the plane, then Mason showing up and talking to Jack about what Jack should really be doing with his life; or, in Season 3, Jack and Nina’s final confrontation; or in Season 5, our last visit with David Palmer.) There are several such memorable moments in Season 7.

Buy,Download, Or Stream 24: Season Seven! Click Here

This season benefits from a great cast, including some returning favorite characters (Tony, Chloe, Agent Pierce, and a couple others) and some great new ones (FBI Agent Renee Walker, super talented & resourceful and a possible love interest for Jack in Season 8 – if he lives that long), and uber bad guy Jonas Hodges, played to a tee by Jon Voight.

Season 7 borrows the more successful plot elements from previous seasons, and does them well in a new context. Jack, once again, is working on the outside, with the help of Chloe on the inside. Jack, once again, must infiltrate a group of bad guys by pretending to be one of them, and must pretend to kill someone he – and we – care about to convince them of his loyalties. There’s a well-placed mole, feeding intel to the bad guys and keeping them a step ahead of our hero. There’s a Sherrie Palmer-like character in the President’s daughter, and, finally, once again, a President with principles – like David Palmer.

I am hoping the writers try some different plot elements next year instead of rehashing the same formula. Stop making Jack prove he’s a good guy – sheesh, he’s saved the world 6 or 7 times over, you’d think people would have learned by now. Give him some real resources and the unconditional faith of the leaders he serves.

But, after the disappointing Season 6, the writers did a fantastic job, and Season 7 brings the comforting feeling of the old 24 magic. Most fans, I think, will easily forgive the writers for reusing some past plot points. And while not all seasons of 24 portray their villains as 3-dimensional characters with plausible motivations, Season 7 gives us a nicely fleshed out villain in Jonas Hodges, and another guy who’s pretty bad reveals his true motivations to Jack in Episode 24, and it’s pretty plausible and satisfying.

In the end, despite the terrorist threats to the nation, and all the great action and stunts and car crashes, Season 7 is more intimate – it’s about Jack facing his demons and about other characters we’ve long known dealing with theirs. And as a bonus (I hope this isn’t too much of a spoiler), Kim’s reappearance sets things right with fans – she doesn’t wind up in any cougar traps – far from it – and she makes a positive contribution when it counts most. In my view, everything wraps up perfectly in Episode 24. The writers don’t explicitly show the actual resolution to certain things, like what Renee is about to do when we last see her, or what will happen after the very final scene. But they show enough to make it clear how things turn out. And it is very satisfying.

If you have not seen 24 Season 7 yet, I envy you for the treat you’re in store for.

Right around the time of their release a couple years ago, I invested in Image’s series of five 9-Disc box sets that collected every Twilight Zone episode from the original ‘59 series. From a collector’s standpoint, this seemed like a great move, as these sets turned out to be much more affordable than the previous releases, which were 45 individual volumes. I figured I had the collection and could sit back and relax. I really enjoyed the sets (my reviews of them can be found here, as a matter of fact) and watched them ritually once I owned them.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Twilight Zone – Season 1! Click Here

In March 2004 when the rumors first hit that definitive season-by-season sets were to hit, I put my collection on e-bay and received almost all the money I invested in them in return. Yes, as a diehard TZ fan, I support the definitive releases wholeheartedly. Part of being a DVD collector is knowing that upgrades are imminent. In fact, this may not be the last time I invest in the series… experts forsee Blu-ray coming into play within the next 5 years and a company like Image with no single film or TV property to their name bigger than The Twilight Zone may someday release these with HD transfers on Blu-ray disc. DVD, like a cheaper version of Laserdiscs, is ten times the collector’s format that VHS ever was.

In short, Image doesn’t expect everyone to upgrade. They’re not trying to bleed the same customers dry. But they are making a ton of the diehards and DVD collectors truly ecstatic. What hasn’t been mentioned in any of the reviews here yet is THAT THE VIDEO AND AUDIO HAVE GONE THROUGH A RESTORATION PROCESS — they LOOK AND SOUND BETTER than they ever have before, whether your first exposure to them was on CBS in the early 60s, in the late 70s (when the re-runs were very popular), or during the holiday marathons of the 90s and today on the Sci-Fi Channel. Not only that, but included are Rod Serling’s “Next week…” teasers and, for the first time, audio commentaries by major players in the episodes themselves as well as crew members (Martin Landau in “Mr. Denton…”, Earl Holliman in “Where is Everybody?”, and Kevin McCarthy in “Long Live Walter Jameson” immediately spring to mind). As a TZ diehard, I thought I’d seen and heard as much as I’d ever get to, but Image has put together something new for me to look forward to. The “audio lecture” Amazon refers to is from Sherwood Oaks College and is split into several parts. There is a great deal of discussion regarding “Walking Distance” for instance — and we are able to listen to it while watching the episode at the same time. It runs nearly the entire length of the episode. Real treats also include Zicree’s interviews conducted in the late 70s for the writing of his book with such stars as Burgess Meredith and Anne Francis.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Twilight Zone – Season 1! Click Here

Also — the old collections tried to theme the episodes on each disc, but this simply didn’t work for me. Too often I’d only want to watch one of the episodes on a disc and would have to frequently change out. With this set, we’ll be getting the first season which, in a point that is rarely disputed, is the best of the series:

Where Is Everybody?, One for the Angels, Mr. Denton on Doomsday, Sixteen Millimeter Shrine, Walking Distance, Escape Clause, The Lonely, Time Enough at Last, Perchance to Dream, Judgment Night, And When the Sky Was Opened, What You Need, The Four of Us Are Dying, Third from the Sun, I Shot an Arrow into the Air, The Hitch-Hiker, The Fever, The Last Flight, The Purple Testament, Elegy, Mirror Image, The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street, A World of Difference, Long Live Walter Jameson, People Are Alike All Over, Execution, The Big Tall Wish, A Nice Place to Visit, Nightmare as a Child, A Stop at Willoughby, The Chaser, A Passage for Trumpet, Mr. Bevis, The After Hours, The Mighty Casey, and A World of His Own.

So while Image doesn’t expect you to double dip, you gotta feel good going knowing you have that option someday. I don’t think “corporate greed” factors into the equation as much as customer demand from fans like myself (as well as the logical necessity) for one of the best shows of all time to have an exhaustive and organized set of releases. Take care and we’ll see you in the fifth dimension!

This new DVD version of The Twilight Zone 1959 Season One is remastered from the original camera negatives and the original magnetic soundtracks. It has the best picture quality ever and is a great set for fans.

This six disc set is packed with some wonderful extras-

*Audio commentaries by Earl Holliman,Martin Landau,Rod Taylor,Martin Milner,Kevin McCarthy,Ted Post and William Self.

*Vintage audio recollections with Burgess Meredith,Douglas Heyes,Richard L Bare,Buck Houghton,Ann Francis and writer Richard Matheson.

*Rod Serling audio lectures from Sherwood Oaks College.

*Isolated music scores from Bernard Herrman,Jerry Goldsmith and more.

*Rod Serling promos from “next weeks show”.

*The original unaired pilot from “Where Is Everybody?” with Rod Serling’s Network pitch.

*Rare Rod Serling blooper.

Some information about the above audio commentaries- Ann Francis starred in the classic 1950’s movie “Forbidden Planet,Kevin McCarthy starred in the original 1950’s version of “The Thing”,Rod Taylor starred in the classic Hitchcock movie “The Birds” and the 1960 George Pal classic “The Time Machine”.

Martin Landau guest-starred in both the original 1959 and 1985 versions of The Twilight Zone as well as the original “Mission Impossible” and “Space 1999″.

Writer Richard Matheson also wrote stories for both of the original and 1985 Twilight Zone series.

This classic television show has become part of western culture and language. People now the term use the term “in the Twilight Zone” for description in newspapers or interviews. It’s starting do-do-do-do theme has now become part of the culture and is used to denote something strange happening. The singing group Manhatten Transfer even had a top ten record with the title.

One note of criticism- this new version is a wonderful effort for a show that is 45 years old,but fans that have bought previous sets could be entitled to ask why this wasn’t done in the first place, some having spent many hundreds of dollars on the three previous releases. Firstly,we had the “best of” TZ 40 episode set followed by the 4 episode discs sets followed by the Volume 1 through to Vol 5 sets. And now we have this new set. That is enough to test the patience of any fans and they have every right to complain at this sort of exploitation.

In a few years,I predict that a new TZ set in high definition will be released.

So fans,if you want the definitive(we hope)DVD box set on the original Twilight Zone, then sell your other copies and buy this.

It is really well done and hopefully fans can keep this for many years to come.

As an historian, I was a bit disappointed with the latest recreation of the lives and wiles of Henry VIII, arguably one of the most important figures in British history. The nursery rhyme is well known – Henry the Eighth was six times wedded; two he divorced, two beheaded…

This production, written by Peter Morgan (known for other television productions such as `The Jury’) and directed by Pete Travis (also of `The Jury’, also `Other People’s Children’), is a period piece that largely rests on one primary theme – that Henry VIII was charged by his father with one task above all others, and that was to secure the succession for another Tudor. Since this was a world in which (supposedly) a queen could not rule in her own right, this required a male heir to the throne (of course, it would be Henry’s own offspring that would change that assumption, for the better, and for ever).

Henry’s quest to gain a male heir knew no bounds; by the time his obsession had destroyed many lives (not just those of the unfortunate women he married), he was an overweight and overbearing man with not too many years left to live. His succession of wives is made all the more dramatic by the speed of the unions – between his first divorce from Catherine of Aragon in 1533, he had five more wives in the span of only 10 years, the last one to last until his death in 1547. The women came into favour and fell out of favour quickly, sometimes due to infidelity and political intrigue, and sometimes due to the quirky whims of Henry.

It is this quirkiness that is highlighted in Ray Winstone’s performance. Winstone is not well known to American audiences, but a regular fixture on British television and cinemas. Henry is presented as a brash, lustful, but often boyishly-innocent figure, vulnerable and wounded by others around him, especially the wives, if they do not live up to his expectations or desires of loving him for himself. The cast of women portraying the wives is impressive, including the award-winning Helena Bonham Carter as Anne Boleyn, Emilia Fox as Jane Seymour, and Clare Holman as Catherine Parr. If you think you recognise the voice of the narrator, you probably do – it is that of Shakespearean Derek Jacobi.

The sets, costumes, and other atmospheric pieces are well done and appropriate to the context. But this is an actor’s piece, driven by dialogue, and here is falls a little short of fully satisfying. The characters are a bit too much of caricatures; they overemphasise certain strengths and weaknesses, and do not play as balanced figures (even for the imbalanced people that history tells us they were). This is meant to draw the tragedy of Henry’s life out, and his role as more sinned against than sinning in many parts of the film play.

Well worth watching, the viewer who expects an undistorted history lesson will be disappointed. However, in the `some events have been changed for dramatic purposes’ world of acting, it does help to cause some reconsideration here and there of all the events of the time. History is as much a record as it is interpretation. This is one.

In reading some of these reviews, I wonder if we had seen the same movie.

Even if I did not have a degree in history, the terrible inaccuracies and inconsistencies would have been apparent to even a casual historical buff. It is so bad I don’t know where to begin.

Henry VIII came across as a blue collar worker who dutifully goes bowling every Saturday night. There was not even a rudiment of royal aspect to this character; whether or not it was due to the terrible miscasting of the actor (one of many; more about that later) or a clueless director, one can only guess. If I didn’t know the main events and personages of this period, even a scorecard wouldn’t have helped me understand what was going on.

Major historical events simply flew by without any rhyme, reason or explanation. At least in some productions, actors are sought who bear some resemblance to the actual person. In this case, an attempt to do so must have been thrown out the window. Henry VIII was over 6 ft tall according to his skeleton unearthed in the 1800s. In this movie almost everybody towers over him, in an age when most men were around 5′6″-5′8″ in height. And the rest–Wolsey, Cromwell, Cranmer–not one of the actors bore any recognizable resemblance at all to their historical personages, and in most cases were the exact opposites. And why the crewcuts?

The personalities of Henry’s wives were many and varied remarkably from one to the other. This movie, however, took that fact of their differences in individual traits to a ludicrous extreme. At times, they were downright incorrect. Jane Seymour was way too overbearing, talkative and meddling. In reality, Henry had been initially captivated by her because she was quiet and unassuming. Catherine Howard was a promiscuous young girl, but I doubt she exhibited such sauciness in Henry’s very presence. Didn’t anybody involved in this fiasco read a history book?

Skinny dipping in Tudor England?????????

I cannot finish this review without commenting on the total lack of knowledge of the time period. Didn’t anyone know that women, especially those of the upper class, NEVER appeared in public without the sometimes elaborate headresses of the period? The only exception would be when a woman was crowned; she would ride to her coronation with her hair loose. Otherwise, women generally hid their tresses under headpieces and scarves. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the young Lady Mary in public without any head covering; likewise Catherine Howard.

What makes this especially disappointing is that usually the British are sticklers for historical accuracy. Can someone tell me what happened with this movie? Are they no longer teaching English History in the schools?

This sad movie is nothing but an elaborate soap opera set in Tudor England and altering the principles to such a degree that one had to guess whom they were portraying.

If you know very little about history, please do not use this movie as a starting point in your education. As for those of us who have made an intense study of Tudor England–this film isn’t even good enough for a laugh. History massacred! This production does not really even merit one star, but the scoring method does not give me the option of a “0″.

As a fan of Anime for almost 5 years, I like to think of myself as having very refined tastes – when I first saw this DVD on the rack at Best Buy, I thought to myself “Well, this looks like a Do or Die show – either a smash hit, or a total flop. I was intrigued enough to buy both Volume 1 and Volume 2 at the same time, and I watched both that same night.

I really have to say, after the first volume, I was having trouble breathing because I was laughing so hard and so many times. But the Second Volume was absolutely brilliant – I have NEVER laughed so hard in my young life – not even at my favorite Marx Brothers film, or my favorite episode of Family Guy. This show is ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS. It blends together that unreal comedy that can only come from Japan along with wacky action, fabulous characters, and great story development.

The episode 4 title “Single-Minded Stakeout” is an episode for the ages. It bears the typical resemblance to any romantic comedy, with the episode in which a jealous character follows his/her counterpart on a date with an old boyfriend/girlfriend, only to be forced to interrupt and save the day – revealing to the counterpart that the jealous character really has feelings for them – as has been seen in other Romantic Comedies (most notably: “Please Teacher” and “Love Hina”). But with the surprise introduction of “Bonta-kun” (the cuddly bear whose seemingly Pokemon-esque dialogue of “Fumoffu!” is applied as the show’s title), the episode takes a wonderful ride down a heart-warming trail of young love and die-hard laughter.

As most Anime stalls while trying to carry on it’s plot with filler episodes, “Full Metal Panic?: Fumoffu” keeps the laughs coming with unexpected surprises – a quality investment and a real gem to have in a Collection. If you love Romantic Comedies such as “Oh My Goddess!”, “Love Hina”, or “Please Teacher”, you’ll “panic” to buy more of these great DVDs – just like me.

Let me prefix this by saying that, yes, I know the DVD isn’t due out for about a month; however, I have seen the content of this DVD (in the original airing) and therefore feel that I am qualified to review it.

In this set, Chidori finally (although indirectly) admits her feelings for Souske out loud (but not to him… of course :_[ ), and without speaking we finally see Souske beginning to admit to himself that he likes Chidori. This will most likely be the highlight of the DVD (for me anyway).

A molestor terrorizes the town and it's up to Souske and Chidori to stop him... sort of... And after that, another tender moment for our intrepid pseudo-couple as they visit a haunted hospital (in an effort to scare Souske).

Next (and most likely last on this DVD, since there are 12 total episodes [counting as sets of opening and endings, not the actual episodes themselves], so 3 for each DVD) we have the entry of a martial arts master that is gunning for Chidori… could this mean some competition?

Now, for the actual review of this DVD.

Once again the art lives up to the standards set by the previous series and the previous DVD.

The story is, as always, great. This time it’s made extra special by the fact that we get to REALLY see the first signs of Souske showing his affection for Chidori (admittedly it’s very awkward and unsure, but it’s a start!). In a way, this chapter of Fumoffu is “the calm before the storm.” As things get a bit more hectic later (but don’t worry, it never leaves the school life style, this one also has no mecha… aside from Bonta-kun that is).

In summary, stop reading this review and go click the “1-click ordering” button… it’s worth every penny.

I SAID STOP READING THIS REVIEW!!!!!

A few of my favorite episodes from this season include:

Never Send a Boy King to Do a Man’s Job (2) 3/3/1979

A Different Drummer 4/13/1979

What a shame there’s only one more season (and a truncated one at that) of the Rockford files to go after this. Hopefully they’ll include all the reunion shows with the 12 episodes of Season Six.

Oh and don’t forget “At the tone leave your name and number, I’ll get back to you.”

The Rockford Files, in case you haven’t seen it, is one of the best examples of dramatic television in the 1970’s (if you have seen it you already know that). The Rockford Files was/is a witty, well written “detective” show, a genre that was extremely popular in the 70’s and 80’s. If you like Magnum P.I. or Simon and Simon or any other show like that then you’ll like The Rockford Files. Rockford did the same thing before they did it, only better.

James Garner was absolutely perfect as Jim Rockford. It’s just about impossible to imagine anyone else in the role. The show’s writers and producers managed to find a perfect balance of drama and comedy (with the comedy coming in the form of dry, sarcastic one liners, usually coming from Rockford) without hurting the dramatic impact of the stories.

The fifth season of the show found those writers and producers on a roll. The Rockford Files was one of those shows that never saw a slip in quality. It was a great show from start to finish. And now nearly the entire run of the series is available on DVD.

Watching the DVD’s is almost like going back in time – these episodes (for the most part) haven’t looked this good since they first aired back in the 70’s. It’s nice, too, to be able to watch uncut episodes (as a couple minutes from each episode of shows from that era are cut for additional ad time when shown on TV in syndication). Unless you watched the shows in the 70’s you might not even know what you were missing when watching the shows in syndication – but now you will get to see those scenes previously deleted for commercial time.

If you’re a fan of detective shows with a wry sense of humor then The Rockford Files is for you.

Own these films individually on DVD from Image Entertainment. Nice to have them in boxed sets like this though I must let Metzger fans know that the transfers from First Run are not as good as the Image versions. Where the Image versions are color saturated and sharp, the First Run transfers have murky, faded out color and soft pictures.

Still, for the price, these boxed sets aren’t a bad buy.

I have had this set for about four years.

Radley Metzger was one of the first arthouse pioneers of explorations deep into human sexuality in the 1960’s and 1970’s.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Radley Metzger Collection, Vol. 1! Click Here

I agree that by Holywood standards the sexual exploitation is mild. However, those viewing these films (especially Therese & Isabelle) soley for their titilating content are overlooking the deep psycho-sexual themes in these films.

Therese and Isabelle, for instance, is one of the classics that still guide women exploring their sexuality well into the twenty first century. It is a very, very tender portrayal of a young woman’s coming of age, and, her deep needs for love and self-acceptance. (It is the only film adaptation of Violette LeDuc’s candid and, for the time, sensational auto-biography of the same name).

Camille 2000 is a brilliant remake of Daniel Defoe’s “Camille” set in 20th century Italian culture (for the 1960’s and 1970’s).

The “Alley Cats” is one of the first films that exposed, for modern audiences, the once forbidden realm of prostitution and its prominence in our culture (despite its suppression).

Please, if you are looking for sex, nudity and romp, try something like: Ubalda, All Naked and Warm (I gave it five stars).

If you are looking for something to stimulate your brain, in addition to your left hand, these arthouse classics are well worth your time and consideration.
