This was the last thoroughly decent series made during Warner Animation’s storied Silver Age. Its DVD release is long overdue, and hopefully it will eventually include the second, third and fourth complete seasons as well. Not to mention the few episodes comprising the fifth. Everyone on earth deserves this colossal video treat. They will no longer have to attend movies in public.

Great product. Purchased so I could show my grand kids what real cartoons are all about. Thay loved this DVD. Thank You.

“Black Lagoon” is a pretty typical anime action series in a lot of ways, not especially outstanding in comparison to some of the shows that have come before it, but it’s a series that does almost everything right. Cowboy Bebop on water pretty much sums it up. .The show follows the adventures of a rag-tag crew (is there any other kind?) of modern pirates as they pull off jobs and capers for various crime bosses. The protagonist is a jaded businessman who becomes known as “Rock” after he is kidnapped by said pirates and eventually winds up joining them after he turns out to be more resourceful than one might expect.

Rock may be the protagonist but make no mistake, the star of the show is sociopathic she-pirate Levi (Revi if you prefer the Japanese pronunciation), a one-woman wrecking crew with bad attitude to spare. This girl in the best thing this series has going for it as she is a true-blue anti-heroine; mean-spirited, apathetic, and often beyond psychotic. This is rather surprising since the female leads in these shows are typically rather sensitive and heroic types inside of their harsh exteriors, but Levi is bad to the bone and she never lets you forget it for long. Her clashes with the level-headed newcomer Rock make up much of the first half of the show and believe me, it gets ugly. Rounding out the crew are Dutch, the captain of their torpedo boat, and Benny who appears to be the tech guy but frankly, he doesn’t do much which is disappointing.

Most of the missions are split between two or three episode arcs and consist of such glamorous fare as salvaging a sunken Nazi U-boat or kidnapping a rich brat. Of course there’s always a catch such as a battleship full of neo-nazis coming to reclaim their artifacts, or a nanny/housemaid (complete with fetishistic outfit) that gives Levi more than a run for her money in some gunbattles that would make John Woo envious. These kind of fringe characters are another reason that “Black Lagoon” is such a success. My favorite is a rather vain blademistress in a Chinese dress who teams up with Levi during the last arc of the series. The scene where the two of them are being pursued in a car and fighting with each other over who gets to stand up through the sunroof and engage the pursuers is a riot. Also of note is the crew’s primary employer, a Russian mafiosa with badly scarred skin named Balalaika (say THAT three times fast!) who shows up often as the consummate crooked businesswoman.

The series is a too-short 12 episodes with no larger story to tell. Levi’s past is hinted at or glimpsed several times, but never truly explored, though the second season gives us more along those lines and a third is forthcoming. “Black Lagoon” is a fun show with fantastic action sequences, great animation, and plenty of colorful characters. Well worth a viewing. If you worship at the altar of “Cowboy Bebop”, consider this series a must, though newcomers to anime and casual fans should also find a lot to like here. Also, if you’ve ever wondered the best way to go about torpedoing an in-flight helicopter, check this show out for sure.

First off, I was really impressed with the production values. The animation and sound was top notch. There was none of that cost saving corner cutting, which really adds to the overall feel of the show.

Secondly it’s a really smart script with complex characters and tightly written plots.

Third lots of nifty violence, but with a black comedy twist.

Don’t go in expecting Cowboy Bebop, although there are similarities Black Lagoon is a lot darker. You might like both. Cowboy Bebop is one of my all time favs too. However I find the two shows to have distinctly different flavors.

One thing that appealed to my inner philosophy major was that underlying theme of the whole anime is nihilism(Revy) v existentialism(Rock), which philosophy is more realistic–but without a single descent into academic angst or mention of a philosophical term. It was all fast paced action with a few comic turns on the surface, and can be appreciated on just that level, but there was heavy epistomological debate going on underneath. Personally, I thought that was pretty cool.

This is the true story of one of the greatest escapes of the 20th century! The year is 1979. The Strelzyk and Wetzel families desperately want to leave Communist-controlled East Germany so they decide to build a huge hot-air balloon to carry them over to West Germany. Not only is it risky relying on a balloon to carry two families, they also have to avoid East German police. This is a well-crafted Disney film that the whole family will enjoy. The cast includes John Hurt, Jane Alexander, and a then-unknown Beau Bridges. Although I’m very happy to own this on dvd, this is a bare-bones dvd as far as special features go. At least the sound quality is better than my old vhs copy. Still, this is a very important and inspiring story that everyone should know about and I highly recommend this movie to people of all ages.

This is one of the most suspenseful films ever made, even more so because it is a true story. I was back in the small town when the two families were preparing the balloon. Some of my friends in Poessneck knew them. The film actually captures the run down town, the anguish of the people living there and the absolute terror of the wall. This is one film everyone who loves freedom should see.

My son has been crazy for fireworks since he was two! He is now seven, and he can name all the different types of fireworks, many of the company names in the firework industry and with help from dad–and many safety precautions–he can also create his own crude fireworks.

I bought this video for my firework-crazy son because the VHS version had a large firework display pictured on the cover and the description mentioned fireworks several times. The VHS description did not attach the secondary title — *The Sizzling Story of Explosions* — which would have provided a clearer description of content.

Buy,Download, Or Stream NOVA: Kaboom! – The Sizzling Story of Explosions! Click Here

I gave this a 4-star rating because although it is–as it claims–history focused, fireworks are but a small part of the overall story. It appears that the DVD version has a different picture on the cover–a more appropriate picture–since the video is about explosions in general not fireworks specifically.

So, if you want to know how it all came about then you’ll enjoy this video, but if you want to see firework displays or learn how to make your own, then try another video. In fact, NOVA has another video entitled Fireworks that we’re going to try next.

Strip Nude For Your Killer’s not bad. It’s not really good, but not bad either. The coverbox promises more than the film delivers(plus the artwork is great). It’s about a killer in motorcycle gear that kills fashion(Turn To The Left!!) models. Ya know, typical giallo stuff, but the whole model thing is too close to Bava’s Blood and Black Lace. This was directed by Andrea Bianchi, who as everyone knows, gave us the box office smash, Burial Ground. Since that film was so silly and out there, I figured this would have a touch of that lunacy as well. I mean, how can you go wrong with a killer in a motorcycle helmet killing nude chicks(that is if you forget Nail Gun Massacre exists)? Strangely the film is a tad boring. It’s got a decent amount of bloodletting, moreso than alot of giallos of the time. It’s got that funky soundtrack we all love. It’s got it’s share of nude women as well, but aside from Russ Meyer films, nudity was never a selling point with me for an exploitation film. It’s certainly better than any post-Scream attempts at a slasher flick, yet doesn’t quite live up to the classic giallos. I guess you’d be pretty even steven with this one.

The musical score is the best part of Strip Nude For Your Killer, because I’ve been humming it ever since I watched this DVD. The title implies that there will be two things in the movie: 1) Killing and 2) Nudity. There are both, but neither are used with much flair. Viewers that enjoy wild displays of violence and gore will likely be disappointed, but those who are into watching naked women walk around in high heels may be pleased. As a mystery, it’s pretty dull. As a sleazefest, it’s not sleazy enough. The movie really does the title and the soundtrack a disservice.

Two things killed this movie at the box office when it was first released: first, its title. Americans didn’t seem to know what a “proxy” was, much less a hudsucking one. The second was its time of release. The movie came out in May as an early summer release but was actually a movie that would have been better received at Christmas. “Jaws” is a prototypical summer film. “It’s A Wonderful Life,” by comparison, would hardly be a summer blockbuster but sets the perfect tone for the holiday season. Come back in twenty years and you will find that “The Hudsucker Proxy” IS the Frank Capra classic for a new generation. It is Capra meets “Metropolis” blended with the smart humor of the Coens. The casting is near perfect. Tim Robbins is the naive and goofy savant. Paul Newman is as wonderful a villain as you will find as the evil Sidney Mussberger. Only Jennifer Jason Leigh takes a bit of getting used to as the tough talking reporter but she will move you by movie’s end. I’ve had to beg, plead, wheedle and cajole my friends through the years to watch this movie and not let themselves be turned off by its title. Thus far it’s left no one disappointed.

The movie’s middle third is unbelievably funny, and Jennifer Jason Leigh is perfect. Buscemi shows up briefly during a scene at the Beatnik bar. The DVD isn’t of great quality, though. The first hint comes from the fact that “Ethan” (as in “Coen”) is spelled “Ethen” in the jewel case’s blurb. As soon as you begin watching, you’ll notice the graininess in the opening shots, and some jaggies during a pan from Tim Robbins on the ledge. The DVD is ok from then on, until you get to the dancing sequence with the white background. So, the disc is a hack job (maybe that explains the low price, too), but the movie is so well done you can overlook it for all but about 10 seconds.

When movie trailers come out months before the release of a film and movie billboards crowd the malls and other places trying to convince the public of what to expect (read ‘how can we guarantee making the most money from the biggest crowd?’), it is difficult to get motivated to step over the hype and decide for yourself the merits and message of a little movie.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Spanglish! Click Here

SPANGLISH used slapstick approach, beginning with focus on Adam Sandler of the superfluff/toilet mouth ‘comedy’ genre, to publicize this little story into a COMEDY. That was enough to keep this viewer out of the theater. But seeing James L. Brooks current opus at home without all the hoopla of the theater crowd resulted in a pleasant discovery: this is a well-written little drama, peppered with some comedy, that addresses a lot of issues about parenting, cross-ethnicity, living your dream vs skimming off the top, having loyalty to the inner self, the desperate need for communication in today’s loud world, alcoholism, etc. Not the stuff for slapstick, nor is it treated that way.

John Clasky (Adam Sandler in a straight role that allows him to show substance over pratt falls) is a successful chef who is able to support his family with a home in Beverly Hills and a summer home at the beach (obviously Malibu). His wife Deborah (Tea Leoni in a wildly dysfunctional mother role which she handles well), in desperation for breathing room to pursue her lackluster life, hires a non-English speaking Latina maid Flor (Paz Vega) who has immigrated to the US with her young daughter Cristina (Shelbie Bruce, a amazingly bilingual young actress) to make a life for herself after her husband has left her. Deborah’s daughter Bernice (Sarah Steele) is overweight and the victim of her mother’s misconstrued attempts to correct her problem at the expense of acknowledging Bernice’s self worth.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Spanglish! Click Here

Though busy with his successful restaurant, John finds time to be a loving father, a husband who is as supportive of his wild wife as is possible, and who gradually finds in the new Flor a gentle, honest, compassionate/passionate human being that seems to be a soul mate. Things progress quickly: Flor learns English via language tapes on TV, Cristina moves in with the family when the move to Malibu occurs, Deborah dotes on the bright, attractive Cristina while ignoring her own daughter, Flor tends to the emotions of Bernice, and finally a marital crisis occurs which places into focus the idiosyncrasies of all members of the extended household (including Deborah’s alcoholic mother – Cloris Leachman, as brilliant as ever).

The manner in which Brooks brings this chaos to closure does not sell out the way most stories do: there are no pat answers here but altered individual perceptions are suggested and we are given the opportunity to resolve them as we wish. Is this a comedy? No, though there are many cleverly funny lines and situations. This is a pertinent drama, unfortunately mislabeled in name and in media approach. For this reviewer this is a tender film about family needs and personal goals. The cast is excellent, each member taking risks that prove to be successful. Give it a try! Grady Harp, April 05

I don’t particularly love Adam Sandler’s comedies. Fortunately, “Spanglish” is not one of them! It’s more of a James L. Brooks movie. Once again, he writes, directs and produces, as he did with the classic “Terms of Endearment” back in 1983, and more recently, with “As Good as It Gets”.

Sandler plays John Clasky, a renowned chef who is in the prime of his professional career. He’s the classic “good guy”, who loves his family and keeps a great balance between the time he devotes to work and the time with his kids. Plus he loves his insecure wife Deborah, played by Tea Leoni (Deep Impact, The Family Man), one wacky lady who has put her career on hold to raise her family.

Complementing the cast is Paz Vega, who broke into international stardom playing Lucia in “Sex and Lucia”. She plays Flor (with rolled “R” at the end), a protective Mexican mom who wants to stay as close as possible to her native Mexican values, even while living in the heart of L.A., cleaning and cooking for the Clasky family.

While the plot does lead into some predictable events (don’t mean to spoil the story for you), this is not your “typical” Adam Sandler movie. As a matter of fact, some of the most hilarious moments are not courtesy of the legend from “The Wedding Singer” and Saturday Night Live, but rather the result of the head-on encounter of two cultures, where no side can speak the other’s language or easily understand each other’s motivations.

With a balance between humor and drama that is preserved throughout most of the plot, the movie stands a good chance of being almost as popular as “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” was a back in 2002.

Donna has had enough of the Golden State. She misses Eric, who, although she doesn’t know it, is headed West – despite his parents’ objections – to declare his love and bring her home. Kelso, however, has decided he has found the woman of his dreams in Annette, who is beautiful and believes in him. Back in Wisconsin, Jackie is a changed woman, thanks to a change in boyfriends.

107. I Can’t Quit You Baby (a.k.a. Jackie and Hyde Get Busted)

9/24/2002

As punishment for Donna going away to California, Bob transfers her to a Catholic School, which means that Donna won’t get to see Eric as much. Eric is determined to fight for their right to be together, until he sees Donna in her new school uniform. Jackie and Hyde get caught making out in the basement; Eric and Donna try to convince them to tell Kelso what’s going on.

108. What Is and What Should Never Be (Part 1 of 2) (a.k.a. Kitty’s Pregnant)

10/29/2002

Kitty joyfully announces that she’s pregnant, but the reaction that she gets from Red leaves a lot to be desired. Eric and Donna continue their campaign to get Jackie and Hyde to tell the truth about their relationship to Kelso. A trip to the DMV seems to present the perfect opportunity, but Fez is the one who seizes the day rather than Hyde.

109. Heartbreaker (Part 2 of 2) (a.k.a. Kitty’s Parents Come to Visit) 10/29/2002

Kitty’s parents arrive from Arizona, after being told that Kitty has some wonderful news to share with them. Kitty’s news isn’t what she thought it would be, and throws a damper on the high spirits. Donna learns a thing or two from Bea about getting people to do things, while Eric and Red learn a thing or two from the World Book about “lady problems.” Kelso works out his feelings about Jackie and Hyde’s relationship.

110. Ramble On (a.k.a. Promise Ring Redux)

11/12/2002

In a romantic moment, Donna presents Eric with a ring, much like the promise ring that he gave her, and caused their break up. For Donna, the ring symbolizes their enduring love and committment; for Eric, it symbolizes ugliness. To protect Donna’s feelings, he decides not to say anything, but the secret gains a life of its own. Kitty is determined not to let menopause affect her life, but has a hard time living up to her committment.

111. Over the Hills and Far Away

11/19/2002

The kids prepare to make a weekend college visit to the University of Wisconsin. There’s only one snag in the plan: Donna tells Eric that Bob will not let her go to UW. Instead he wants her to visit Marquette, a small Catholic college. So Donna and Jackie visit Marquette, where Jackie spends her time worrying about Hyde; the guys go to UW with Red and a very irritable Kitty.

112. Hot Dog (a.k.a. The Gifts)

11/26/2002

When Eric decides to buy Donna a meaningful gift, he ends up getting her an engagement ring. But after discussing it with the guys, he realizes they are too young and the ring was a bad idea. Unfortunately, Eric already told Donna he got her a surprise and on their special evening out, he’s put on the spot and forced to make the biggest decision of his life. Meanwhile, in an attempt to lift menopausal Kitty’s spirits, Red gets her a dog: Schotzy.

113. Thank You

12/3/2002

Eric hides the fact that he’s failing math from Red because he wants to prove that he’s starting to get serious about his future. Red is so impressed by his son’s apparent maturity that he bumps Laurie from the adults’ table at Thanksgiving and gives her seat to Eric. This makes Eric think that the time may finally be right to announce to his engagement to Donna. However, the woman that Kelso brings as his date to the Formans’ dinner complicates this decision.

114. Black Dog (a.k.a. Ow, My Eye)

12/10/2002

When Jackie’s father is arrested for bribery, Kelso thinks she’ll come running back to him. But when Hyde and Kelso get into a brawl over Jackie, Kelso accidentally shoots Hyde with a BB gun and all hell breaks lose. Donna and Eric argue over how Hyde should deal with Jackie’s pain. Meanwhile, Fez realizes he has a crush on his boss at the DMV.

115. The Crunge (a.k.a. The S.A.T.s)

12/17/2002

The S.A.T. scores have come in and everyone does significantly better than Eric. He’s particularly upset by Donna’s high score and blames her for distracting him during the exam. As a result, Eric enlists Red to help him buckle down and stay away from Donna until he retakes the test. Meanwhile, Kelso discovers that he may have a bright future and Jackie pushes Hyde towards a college career.

116. The Girl I Love

1/7/2003

When Fez decides to introduce his new girlfriend, Nina, to the gang, Kitty offers to throw a dinner party for the event. The guys resent being dragged to a dinner party, while the girls are excited at the thought of a grown-up night.

117. Misty Mountain Hop (a.k.a. Jackie’s Cabin)

1/22/2003

Jackie recruits the Formans to help clean out her family’s mountain cabin, but decides it best not to ask for Hyde’s assistance, instead telling him she is attending a doll expo. With Jackie going away, Hyde seizes the opportunity to use Jackie’s cabin and invites Kelso and Fez. Donna and Eric get lost on the way to the cabin and spend the trip fighting. Hyde’s plan goes wrong when Kelso gets his hand, holding his stash, stuck in a vase just as Jackie and the Formans arrive.

118. Your Time Is Gonna Come (a.k.a. Get Off My Boyfriend) 1/29/2003

Annette, Kelso’s girlfriend from California, comes to Point Place to visit him. The entire gang is shocked to learn how closely her personality resembles Jackie’s, while Jackie tries to conceal her jealousy from Hyde. Meanwhile, Kitty’s parents show up unexpectedly and announce that they’ll be moving in for a while. This unpleasant situation gets far worse when Eric finds his grandfather collapsed in the driveway.

119. Babe I’m Gonna Leave You (a.k.a. Valentine’s Day)

2/5/2003

Hyde’s depressed that Jackie still seems to have feelings for Michael. Annette’s not happy either, because Kelso seems to still be attached to Jackie. And Kitty takes to her bed, because she feels her mother doesn’t love her.

120. When the Levee Breaks

2/12/2003

When Bob goes out of town, Eric and Donna decide to “practice” being married at her house. The gang is excited because they think this is a chance to party all weekend at the Pinciotti’s place, until Eric and Donna are forced to set them straight. Meanwhile, Kitty goes to the jewelers to pick up a ring she thinks Red got her as a surprise. But she discovers the real surprise: it’s actually an engagement ring for Donna.

121. Whole Lotta Love (a.k.a. The Silent Treatment)

2/19/2003

Red is angry that Donna and Eric are engaged, so he gives Eric the silent treatment, leaving it up to Donna to try to talk to him. Fez finally does it with Nina; he’s happy that he finally did it, but afterwards, things aren’t so great. Kelso gives Jackie a birthday present, but insists that he’s not trying to do anything; Hyde didn’t even know it was her birthday.

122. The Battle of Evermore (a.k.a. Pioneer Days)

2/26/2003

Things are still bad between Red and Eric, so Kitty signs them up for the Point Place Paul Bunyan Pioneer Days Jamboree. The estranged men must work together in order to beat Charlie and Mitch, an obnoxious father/son team who have won the past two years. Meanwhile, Hyde doesn’t understand why Leo hasn’t called him back to work in a while. He takes the gang to the Foto Hut only to find the place has been completely cleaned out.

123. Hey Hey What Can I Do (a.k.a. Job Fair)

3/12/2003

Everyone has their own reasons for going to the job fair. Eric needs a full-time job now that Red refuses to pay for college. The Photo Hut is closed, so Hyde’s looking for work too. Fez wants to make out with Nina at the DMV booth while “Hot Donna” will be signing autographs at the radio station’s booth. And after failing to flirt his way out of a parking ticket, Kelso fears that his good looks will fade and that he’ll need a practical job like other ‘uggos’.

124. Bring It On Home (a.k.a. Jackie’s in the House)

3/26/2003

The Formans discover that Jackie has been sleeping in Hyde’s room since neither of her parents are home. The best solution that everyone can come up with is for Jackie to move in with Bob and Donna, but unforunately Jackie doesn’t appreciate everyone’s pity. Meanwhile, Red gives Eric a hard time when he finds out that his son sleeps nude. And Fez has dinner at Nina’s house, where he learns that her parents don’t want her dating her “third world friend”.

125. No Quarter (a.k.a. Jackie Moves In)

4/2/2003

The Pinciottis learn very quickly that living with Jackie is going to be difficult. Kelso swipes Jackie’s panties to taunt Hyde, who has his revenge when Kelso gets a job at the hotel kitchen where Hyde works. Eric receives notice that he must return Donna’s engagement ring if he can’t make a payment by Friday. His visits to the jewelry store reveal that there’s bad blood between Fez and Fenton, the jewelry guy.

126. Trampled Under Foot (a.k.a. Fez Gets Dumped)

4/9/2003

Nina breaks up with Fez, although he doesn’t realize it until the gang sets him straight. It turns out that Nina thinks Fez is too needy. As for the others, they decide to rejuvenate their dull lives by finding another friend to hang out with. Kitty has one candidate in mind, but she has an ulterior motive.

127. You Shook Me (Part 1 of 2) (a.k.a. The Nurses Are Coming)

4/16/2003

Hyde turns down a hot nurse out of faithfulness to Jackie, then demands that Jackie not hang out alone with Kelso any more. The recent nurse convention at the hotel inspires Fez to have an erotic dream about a nurse…who turns out to be Kelso! Naturally, Kelso freaks out, and he turns to his ex for comfort. Meanwhile, Eric accepts a job at the dog food factory where Joanne works in order to earn enough money to marry Donna.

128. Nobody’s Fault But Mine (Part 2 of 2) (a.k.a. Hyde Loves Jackie)

4/23/2003

Hyde cheats on Jackie because he thinks she still loves Kelso. After realizing his mistake, he apologizes to her but she breaks up with him. Red and Kitty dare Eric and Donna to get married by graduation in order to pressure them into calling off their engagement. Their plan works, but a little better than they expected. Fez refuses to give Mitch Miller his driver’s license, so Mitch digs up dirt on him and Kelso. Laurie moves back home, determined to make up for her past wrongs.

129. The Immigrant Song (a.k.a. Fez Gets Busted)

5/7/2003

The Formans are horrified when they realize that Red has gone fishing – he only does that when he’s really angry. When he finally returns, Red has his final say on Eric and Donna’s decision to move. Meanwhile, Kelso, Hyde, and Fez decide to paint obscene pictures on the water tower as their senior prank. Hyde and Kelso’s arguing over Jackie lands Kelso in the hospital, leaving Fez to face the police alone and Jackie to face her feelings about who she wants to be with.

130. Celebration Day (a.k.a. Graduation)

5/14/2003

The gang will be split in half when high school graduation is over: Eric and Donna are all set to move into their Madison apartment, while poor Fez is about to be deported. The love triangle amongst the others grows more heated as Hyde and Kelso compete over an indecisive Jackie. But this tense situation is put aside so that the six friends can go camping together the night before graduation. Laurie tags along and dramatically changes Fez’s life. Back at the Forman house, Red gives Kitty medication to help her deal with her depression over Eric’s imminent departure.

Well look for the last 3 seasons to come out real soon. Take good care!

The season of Eric and Red. I have watched this series from the start and can say that I think this season has some of the best lines/ interaction between Eric and Red. You also have Kitty’s “lady parts problem” and Shotsy the dog, Hyde vs. Kelso over Jackie, and the brief but memorable relationship between Fez and Nina. As for the DVD’s, there is not much in the way of extras, but if you enjoy the show this is something to get.

A movie recounting a newly diagnosed cancer, with a new timeframe for Ben’s lifespan. What transpires is what some find irresponsible, or selfish. However to Ben it gives his life the meaning whose discovery, up until now, he has been postponing.

I watched it once, and the let my teen watch it with me the second time. It has a ‘Into the Wild” movie flavor to it.

I am not Canadian, nor is my store in Canada, but I still thought this was a great Canadian travel film. This was one of the more realistic cancer films I have seen in a bit, and (I feel) not worthy of the hate club that campaigns against it.

Simply put, it is a film about a man who travels across his country after being diagnosed with a terminal illness. Like other good travel films, we see a sampling of the beautiful country that Canada has to offer, we encounter every-day personalities of people along the way and we learn a few lessons about ourselves and what life might be about. The difference here is that we get a insightful narration by Campbell Scott (most recognized of late with his role in Phoebe in Wonderland), which in itself provided some nice laugh-out-loud moments.

I laughed at unexpected moments, saw some incredible Canadian scenery, and did not feel anything was contrived or cardboard (as most complainants have stipulated). The special features give this four-star film a five. The low-def “Making-of” contained just the right amount of logistical material on production, the commentary and interviews provide plenty of information for the followers and the remaining HD gallery, after party and trailer add just the right amount of extras to show the fun side of this film.

The Blu quality is slightly better than the DVD, but there is still plenty of grain and and (very minute) random artifact. The grandiose panoramas could have been a bit clearer, the DTS was never fully utilized, even with the plethora of songs, but the presentation was still adequate. Not a reference Blu, but the film and special features make this a higher rating.

MGM does a grand job in restoring this 1952 comedy classic to DVD perfection!!! Presented in Black/White, Standard Screen size (4:3 tv aspect ratio – before WideScreen (1953)).

This was Spencer Tracy’s & Katherine Hepburn’s 7th film together and as always are Classic Team mates!!! Now digitally remastered and on DVD makes it even better. Flawlessly digitalized makes the picture quality absolutely astounding to watch. Hepburns athletism can be more appreciated especially during the golf scenes when she drives the balls into the far distance (only now can we see these tiny spheres in the distance with DVD clarity!).

Summary; Masterfully directed by George Cukor, Athletic Pat (Hepburn) plays a very skillful amateur female sports nut who seems trapped in a rich socialite engaged to be married life. Mike (Tracy) a sports promoter eyes Hepburn in a Pro-Amatuer Golf match & sees a gold mine to be had. Hustling her to turn pro & be his client Hepburn decides this is a way to escape her miserable dominating fiances & to be married life. Hepburn shows hows some amazing athletic talents in golf & tennis. Tracy & Hepburn are a grand pair to watch & Hollywoods 1950’s happy ending prevails. This is a keeper and the DVD is a beauty!

Special Features include: Cast & Crew, Behind the Scenes, Theatrical Teaser & Trailer.

Pat & Mike is great family entertainment & Katherine Hepburn shows how women can be independent (wearing slacks), athletic (amazing golfer& tennis player) & feminine (beautiful & vunerable) all in one. Enjoy.

PAT & MIKE is the seventh Tracy-Hepburn collaboration, and it stars Spencer Tracy as Mike Conovan, the moneyminded sports racketeer with a heart of gold, and Katharine Hepburn (looking a great deal younger than she did in 1951’s THE AFRICAN QUEEN) as his beautiful ‘property’, Pat Pemberton. Pat is an all-round ‘lady athlete’, adept at golf and tennis (not to mention shooting, basketball and presumably swimming), but completely frazzled whenever her fiance Collier Weld (a suitably smarmy William Ching) is around and watching her. In a bid to become more in control of herself and her life, she (contrarily) submits to Mike’s management and he takes her around the country as a golf and tennis pro. It doesn’t take much imagination to realise what happens next–Mike’s ‘handling’ of Pat is the kind of handling she’s willing to accept (switch ‘Tracy’ for ‘Mike’ and ‘Hepburn’ for ‘Pat’ and you get also a description of Tracy and Hepburn’s real-life relationship), and before long, Collier is pretty much left in the dust.

This film is evidently a star vehicle for Tracy and Hepburn, containing next to no artistic pretensions or even any real attempt to press a subtle feminist point (in contrast with other Tracy/Hepburn films like WOMAN OF THE YEAR or ADAM’S RIB). In fact, the film seems to be just a comfortable, familiar joke between actors, writers and audience–we know these characters, we know these actors, we know what kind of relationship they always have (bantering, sparring, and in the end just a perfect fit)… the only thing that’s different is the names of the characters. Sam, Adam, Mike–Tess, Amanda, Pat–what’s the difference?

To be fair, Hepburn’s character of Pat Pemberton is much softer and more vulnerable than either Tess Harding or Amanda Bonner. This character variation doesn’t hide the real point of the screenplay though–Ruth Gordon and Garson Kanin evidently wanted a chance to display both Hepburn’s natural athletic abilities (phenomenal for a non-professional, but possibly not 100% believable against sports stars like Babe Zaharias) and her incredible legs. Well, they did succeed at both of these things, to great effect. It’s great fun for a Hepburn fan, having read about her deep and abiding love of any and all sports, to get a chance to actually watch her playing golf and tennis onscreen. (This doesn’t mean, of course, that the frequent and long golf scenes don’t test one’s patience occasionally!)

Spencer Tracy has great fun as Mike as well, the sports agent who originally wants Pat to flub a game and come in second. He claims early on in the film that the trouble with her is that she’s got too honest a face–it’s only Tracy’s ability to make rough-and-tumble characters believably vulnerable at heart that makes his later declaration (”I must have caught something from you” i.e. honesty) acceptable. The chemistry between the two is probably closer to the comfortable rapport they shared in ADAM’S RIB as man and wife than the fireworks that went off between them in WOMAN OF THE YEAR. Whatever the case, it is still always a joy to watch Tracy and Hepburn together onscreen, and it’s largely because this film stars who it does that you can allow yourself to enjoy and be taken in by what is evidently a cutesy star vehicle written by the stars’ friends (Gordon and Kanin), and directed by the leading lady’s best and favourite director George Cukor. (Some of the visual tricks, particularly Hepburn’s face appearing on that of a horse, are actually more disturbing than flattering, and I–for one–would prefer not to pursue the metaphor through to its end.) Tracy and Hepburn are also boosted by an excellent supporting cast, particularly William Ching as Pat’s obnoxious suitor and Aldo Ray as Mike’s dimwitted star protege (until Pat comes along, that is!).

PAT & MIKE is a romantic comedy, but it’s also romantic-comedy-*lite*. There are no forced or fake separations that are geared towards wringing tears from viewers before a reconciliation (contrast again with ADAM’S RIB and most formulaic films in recent years). The film is just a little piece of joyful fluff–not taxing at all for either the writers, the actors, or the viewers. For a brilliant comic set-piece, watch out for the scene in which Pat takes on the two seedy sports racketeers and dispenses them with remarkable ease and efficiency. Otherwise, watch PAT & MIKE with the knowledge that this is neither Tracy and Hepburn’s best, nor is it their worst. If you keep your expectations down, you’ll certainly enjoy watching this film because it aims low (aiming only to please and amuse, and not necessarily to engage and thrill), and fulfils those aims very well. 8/10.
